I feel the need to ramble, so here I am

I just discovered Over The Garden Wall and OH MY LORD has it awoken something within me. That whole show feels likes a warm blanket being wrapped up around you while your drinking hot chocolate in a cabin in the woods. Deep within the woods. There's a sence of eerieness to it, but it isn't too disturbing in a sence that I can still watch it at night without feeling paranoid. And the soundtrack - oh, the soundtrack! It makes me sob in all honesty. Kind of like how the vast majority of In Case I Make It (but specifically White Noise) makes me cry. It's not a feeling of sadness, though. I can only describe it as warm. It's a weird feeling. Possibly nostalgic? I don't know. Whatever it is, I like it. It's the same feeling Gravity Falls gives to me. Just thinking about Gravity Falls makes me feel happy. Or I think it's happiness? I can't tell. Emotions are hard. Gravity Falls changed my life in one way or another. It was the first TV show I watched in it's entirty. Sometimes I wish I could thank everyone who's ever worked on that show because I don't know where I'd be without it.

I want to discuss that 'warm' feeling I've discussed earlier because I have no idea what it is. I think it's some sort of deja vu or nostalgia or something along the lines of that. It's annoying me that I can't describe it properly because I desperately crave answers. Well, whatever it is, I like it. That feeling usually only comes to me with these specific things: Kimya Dawson songs, some of Will Woods stuff, Over The Garden Wall, Gravity Falls and those stupid campfire songs that always end with the last word of a verse leading into the first word of a separate verse. I wish I had any sort of way to explain this feeling that does it justice, but I can't. All I know is that it makes me like living. It makes me think about the fact that out of everything I could've been, I'm me. And the thing is, this feeling almost never occurrs with my biggest interests.

I love liking things. I love the fact that I can name every HHN icon. I love the fact that I've learned and still am learning everything I can about The Director. I love the way I overlook literally the simplest metaphors in songs. I love being alive.

Thanks for reading this. Seriously, I hate the internet because it's mostly all negative stuff that just completely ruins any sort of good mood I get. And to you, random stranger. I hope everythings going well or okayish at the very least. You're still here and you should be proud of that. It's cheesy and an oversaid statement, but I don't care. You're aloud to be proud of yourself. Even if it's just getting out of bed, that's something you can say you did. Enjoy existing. You wouldn't be here if someone didn't need you.

EVERYONE HAS BROWN EYES!

Except Garreth, Ominis, Cressida and Adelaide!

Long post full of slightly unflattering pictures of eyes and eyebrows incoming:

Or so I found. If you can name any other NPC who doesn't have brown eyes, please do so! Garreth can't be the only one with green eyes! (Among the students at least, haven't checked the adults yet...)

Now, let the brown-eyed-parade commence! (I really am not complaining!)

Starting with: Sebastian, Poppy, unnamed Slytherin boy and Andrew Larson

Continuing with: Grace Pinch-Smedley, Astoria Crickett, Zenobia Noke and Leander

On with: Samantha Dale, Natsai Onai, Amit Thakkar, Lucan Brattleby and Nellie Oggspire

And last and certainly least (sorry): Duncan Hobhouse and Everett Clopton

Concluding: 15 out of these 19 students have brown eyes. The lighting was never 100% perfect for these, but despite my bad eyesight I can at least confirm that Cressida and Adelaide do have blue-ish eyes (or green-ish?! The longer I stare at those, the less sure I am XD), while the rest of the students (except Garreth and Ominis obv) range from all kinds of brown eyes (hazel and darker and whatnot, I'm no expert). Which is, I guess, quite common in Britain/Scotland? (Again, neither expert nor a native - though I just did a very quick google search and apparently brown is rather rare?! At least today, let's just say in 1890 more ppl had brown eyes...)

Also: Adelaide has the longest eyelashes and Ominis and Grace have the best groomed eyebrows! Only Everett's glasses have nose pads and all three of them are round. (Things I noticed while staring at these for hours...)

Oh and I forgot so many! Let's look at them without picture evidence (lemme check the HL wiki real quick ahem):

Something I decided was in NEED of drawing/concepting tonight at work: Season of the Unknown.

(Only name I could think of for a Over the Garden Wall themed season. PLEASE let me know if it's already taken!)

From Greg, you get: an emote (not sure what he'd teach you; he has SOOOO many expressions), the teapot hat for his elephant costume, Rock Facts Rock (probably just a decorative prop), frog plush (sits on your Sky Kid's head instead of back when not in use, and makes a OtGW frog croak/sound when hugged instead of a squeak), his overalls (sorry; shoes are not separate), and, I was thinking, a music sheet for one of his songs. Hard to pick between Potatoes and Molasses and Adelaide's House Parade.

I was just listening to the OtGW soundtrack in the car and I realized that there’s stuff in the music that actually backs up my kinda crack theory that the Queen of the Clouds is actually the Beast, or at least is tied to the Beast somehow (if we’re going with the idea that the show is Dante’s Inferno, the Woodsman and Adelaide could represent two of the three beasts from the Dark Wood of Error while the cloud lady could be the third.) First, I just want to take a moment to introduce my theory since I haven’t posted about it before. Basically, a while ago, as I was thinking about the ending of the series and trying to figure out what Greg wished for and how he ended up going from the Queen of the Clouds to being in that daze under the Beast’s control, it occurred to me that maybe they were one and the same. Part of this comes from how information about the Beast is provided to the boys and, by extent, the audience. We start off with generic fear about a nameless, nondescript ‘beast’ but, in “Songs of the Dark Lantern”, we are told for the first time that the Beast tells lies and also that the main thing he does is turn children into trees that he harvests for oil to fuel his lamp. To me, this says that he can’t just sneak up behind a child and turn them into a tree but, rather, that he tells lies because he has to lure them in somehow and trick them into becoming the trees. Also, the Beast is known for his lies and we see the Cloud Queen showing Wirt to Greg and lying to him about how Wirt has already been claimed and is too far gone and there is no way for him to go home with Greg. The other main piece of evidence for my little theory here is what Greg is doing with the Beast at the end, how he’s acting, and what exactly he’s saying. He’s doing stuff like putting a teacup on a rock so the sun sets behind it, because he had been told to catch the sun in a cup, and the Beast praises him for this, using a soft tone of voice like a normal person would use with a child that really isn’t befitting of a ‘beast’ at all. And yet, after being shown to do a task that the Beast asked him to do and praised him for completing, Greg is still saying to Wirt that he “did it,” that he “beat the Beast.” Well, if he was even the tiniest bit grounded in reality, there would be no way in Hell he’d be saying that as he’s been going around serving the Beast himself while his physical condition gets significantly worse and he even starts coughing up leaves. This clearly indicates that Greg is out to lunch, mentally, and I think it strongly supports the idea that Greg does not know at all that it’s the Beast who’s having him do stuff like catch the sun in a cup or that it’s the Beast who’s praising him. What I think it is is that, in his head, this is all stuff he’s running around doing for the Cloud Queen in order to set up for or earn whatever his wish was and she’s the one he sees and hears and thinks he’s talking to. Now, as for how the soundtrack further supports this, I’d like to start with singing in the series. Most characters don’t sing at all and few have their own songs, but something that just became clear to me is that, like what Lin Manuel Miranda did in Hamilton, each character who really does sing their own songs gets their own signature style of music. For example, Jason Funderburker (the frog) gets that kind of bluesy sound like in the opening theme and the song “Over the Garden Wall” while Greg has that really upbeat kids’ music, like with “Potatoes and Molasses” and “Adelaide Parade.” More importantly, though, the only two characters in the whole thing who ever sing opera are the Beast and the Queen of the Clouds. Other bits include the part where Greg is ‘Greg’ to literally everyone except the Cloud Queen and the Beast, who both call him ‘Gregory.’ Additionally, there’s the scene at the start of the last episode when the Beast is talking to Greg and he says “Anything is possible if you set your mind to it, right?” which sticks out because we’ve never seen Greg say that to the Beast or even just around him, but he did just say it to the Cloud Queen not that long ago. This one’s a bit of a stretch but there’s also how the light reflects in Greg’s eyes both as he enters the dream and when he’s talking to the Queen of the Clouds which reminded me of the “you have beautiful eyes” part of the first episode when those wild, glowing eyes of the corrupted dog reflect in Greg’s own eyes. Moreover, the lyrics of “Everything is Nice and Fine All the Time” and “Forward Oneiroi” have some bits that sound kind of sinister, which doesn’t make sense if the Cloud Kingdom and their queen are actually just good and nice. Specifically, “Everything is Nice and Fine” has a couple mentions of lies, which is something that throughout the series really only comes up in the Unknown when it comes to the Beast or fear of him, and there’s one line that really sticks out to me of “Our songs are filled with love, the sweetest lie/And we can send them down to you with a little shove.” The cherubs in this Cloud Kingdom are literally coming out and saying that love, or maybe just their love, is a lie so their songs, including the one they’re singing about how everything is nice and fine all the time, are “filled with” a lie. Not to mention the line of “Lasso a cloud and make the flowers grow,” which is eerily reminiscent of the task Greg is given later on of “lowering the sun out of the sky and into this china cup” in how it’s such a whimsical yet surreal and impossible action. I’m also just going to put the lyrics to “Forward Oneiroi” here real quick so you can see them: Forward, cherubs, hear the song A child's wishes call us on Descend! Descend! 'Ere he 'scapes, for dreams Our winged wind hath made For only beneath the veil of sleep Can we Oneiroi act on men. The first thing I want to talk about here is the actual Oneiroi. From what I found, Oneiroi were lesser deities of dreams in some forms and areas of Hellenic paganism who were led by Morpheus, who tended to take a human shape in the dreams he visited. If the welcome wagon is all the Oneiroi who are addressed in the Cloud Queen’s song, then that means that she, as their leader, is the Morpheus figure, as in a powerful being who isn’t actually human but takes a human shape in dreams. Also, that second part of “Descend! Descend!/'Ere he 'scapes” sounds genuinely threatening. If the dream is so good and “everything is nice and fine all the time,” why would Greg ‘escape’? And now I’ll put in the lyrics to Beast’s part of Come Wayward Souls too because I want to compare these two songs: Come, wayward souls And wander through the darkness There is a light for the lost and the meek Sorrow and fear are easily forgotten When you submit to the soil of the earth Okay so where I’m going with this is that these songs feel very similar to me, both in tone and musicality as well as lyrical content. If you took “Forward Oneiroi” and swapped out the words “cherubs” and “Oneiroi” for “children” or “souls” and then just put it in a darker sounding minor key, I think it would feel about the same as “Come Wayward Souls” and I definitely could see that song being one of the Beast’s. I would also point out how the lyrics of both the Beast’s songs have this weirdly encouraging, light, hopeful tone, which makes sense given that he waits for kids to get lost and give up and then he comes in and scoops them up. In “Wayward Souls,” he says “There is a light for the lost and the meek/Sorrow and fear are easily forgotten/When you submit to the soil of the earth,” which yes, sounds kinda ominous with the part about submitting to the earth but, really, is putting light and hope out there. It’s saying that, if you just go with him and submit to the earth, there is a light for you, some beacon of hope, and you can forget the sorrow and fear you’re currently feeling. He does the same in “The Jolly Woodsman,” too: “When the fog of life surrounds you/When you think you've lost your way/Come with me and join the forest/Come with me and join the play.” Lastly, I want to compare the kids’ choir part of “Wayward Souls” and “Potatus et Molassus” to “Everything is Nice and Fine.” For reference, the full choir part is “Grow, tiny seed/You are called to the trees/Rise 'til your leaves fill the sky/Until your sighs fill the air in the night/Lift your mighty limbs/And give praise to the fire.” The first thing that sticks out is how much this choir of children who we know to be the souls in the edelwood trees are talking about reaching up to the sky with the branches of their trees, which reminds me of lines like “So hitch a ride into the sky,” “The softest clouds and rainbow skies ain’t gonna lie,” and “Everyone is sittin' pretty on top of the weather,” from “Everything is Nice and Fine.” I thought I’d already said it but I just looked back and apparently I didn’t say that, with the idea that the Cloud Queen is the Beast, there is also the idea that everyone we see in Cloud City is just the not-yet-sacrificed souls of the children in the edelwoods, and stuff like this kinda goes with that. Another thing I noticed that makes sense to me, though idk if it’ll make sense to everyone, is that “Potatoes and Molasses” is to “Potatus et Molassus” as “Everything is Nice and Fine” is to the children’s choir part in the Beast’s song. I would even go so far as to claim that the whole point of the “Potatus et Molassus” reprise is to draw attention to “Everything is Nice and Fine” and then call into question everything from the Cloud City stuff. I say this because, as I said previously, each character who sings their own designated songs has their own designated style and Everything is Nice and Fine is in a similar style to Greg’s own style (it’s a bit different though, so it’s not like they just used Greg’s style because it’s his dream or something) while “Potatus et Molassus” is in the same exact style as the “grow tiny seed” stuff, to the extent that the children’s choir is even used in that song. So, when I look at Greg in episodes 8 and 10, I think that what’s going on is that the Beast doesn’t just come up and talk to you as this ominous, scary shadow guy with antlers and weird eyes but, rather, he can be subtle and manipulative and do shit like get inside of your head and manipulate you. After all, Satan’s a liar and a conjurer too and, with the Inferno view of OtGW, the Beast is Satan. My bet is that, at the start of episode 10, Greg is aware enough to know that he’s no longer in his dream but he sees the Queen of the Clouds rather than the Beast and imagines that she’s there to guide him through whatever tasks he needs to do to get Wirt back and go home or whatever. Once there’s the tree starting to grow around him, I believe that, in his head, he succeeded and then was back home or maybe some other nice, cute, safe space like Cloud City with all the other souls. When he sings “Potatus et Molassus,” in whatever is going on in his head, he’s just having a good time wherever he is, singing “Potatoes and Molasses,” like how he and all those other children heard a lilting soprano instead of an ominous bass when the Beast sings. (Sorry this was so long btw)

Happy 10th birthday to Prince George of Wales!

Born on 22 July 2013, George Alexander Louis is the eldest child of William, Prince of Wales and Catherine, Princess of Wales, the eldest grandchild of King Charles III and second in the line of succession to the British throne behind his father.

George was christened on 23 October by Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, in the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace. Prince George spent his first months at his parents' cottage on the grounds of Bodorgan Hall in Anglesey, Wales, before his family relocated to Kensington Palace in 2014.

He embarked on his first royal tour with his parents in April 2014, during which the Cambridges spent three weeks in New Zealand and Australia. In June 2015, George made his first public appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace following the Trooping the Colour parade. From 2015 to 2017, the family lived at Anmer Hall in Norfolk, where George started his education at the West Acre Montessori School Nursery in January 2016.

George started primary school under the name George Cambridge in September 2017 at the Thomas's School in Battersea. In 2022, the family moved to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor Home Park. Since September 2022, George and his siblings, Charlotte and Louis, have attended Lambrook, in Berkshire.

Carriage Ride

Series: Open Heart (Alternate Universe)

Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Claire Evans)

Rating: General

Word Count: 1514 words

Summary: After a little incident, Claire and Prince Ethan take a ride in a carriage. A rewrite of a scene from the Hallmark film, One Royal Holiday.

A/N: This fic is for both the @choicesprompts Holiday Rewrite Challenge and for @choicesficwriterscreations CFWC Holidays 2023.

Claire and her father were outside of the family inn along with the head chef/Claire’s father’s best friend (who each other are very much interested in) packing up a bunch of presents on sleighs while waiting for the Queen and Crowned Prince Ethan of Gallwick as their bodyguard Tobias was nowhere in sight. As they were finishing up, the Queen and Ethan came out and were ready to head to the Kentsbury Christmas Parade.

“Oh, I see Santa came early.” The queen said.

“Well, kind of. Everyone who comes to the parade donates a toy for Santa’s sleigh.”

Once they’re all done packing up all the presents, Claire looks at Ethan and realizes he is wearing a gray suit, black dress shoes, and a long black coat.

“Oh, you can’t walk in the snow in those shoes.”

“I’ll be fine. They’re waterproof.” Ethan says as he puts his weight onto the heels of his feet.

“Well, if you slip and fall, be sure to do it after we leave the property.”

“I’ll do my best.”

“Good”

They start to leave the inn when Claire grabs one of the sleds and her father tries to grab the other when Ethan steps in.

“Mr. Evans, allow me.”

“Oh, thank you, Ethan.”

The Queen, Claire’s father and his friend were already heading towards the parade when Claire giggled at Ethan as he took the sleigh.

“Hey where’s Tobias?”

“He’s close. He likes to keep a low profile.”

Not too far up the road, Tobias pops out of the snow looking towards Ethan and Claire.

“Wow. That’s not creepy at all.” Claire says, which makes Ethan stifle a laugh as they start walking towards the parade.

The queen, Claire’s father, his friend, and Tobias stay ahead while Claire and Ethan trail a few feet behind them with the sleighs as everyone says hi to Claire, who waves back at them.

“Everyone here seems to know you.”

“Yeah, this town is like one big family. It must be strange to walk down the street and have no one know who you are.”

Ethan tilts his head slightly. “I rather like it.”

Claire is then greeted by an old family friend who immediately thought that Ethan was a “special guest” that Claire brought home for the holidays. The family friend then goes to hug Ethan who then just stiffens in place as Claire corrects her, in which the family friend apologizes as Claire and Ethan make their way to the parade.

As the Queen, Claire’s father, his friend, and Tobias get to their seats, they run into Mayor Adelaide Barnes. Tobias then introduces the Queen to Adelaide.

“It is so nice to meet you. Wow, you are more regal uo close.” Adelaide says while shaking the queen's hand.

“What a lovely compliment. And congratulations on your success. The more women we have in charge the better.”

The queen walks off as Claire rushes over towards Adelaide, who looks lovingly towards Tobias. Claire then slowly pulls Adelaide away to talk privately.

“Adelaide, be careful.”

“With what?”

“You know what. They’re leaving soon. It can’t possibly work.”

“People also said I can’t possibly become mayor. I’ll take my chances.” Adelaide says while taking glances over at Tobias before the two of them walk back over.

Ethan then pipes up. “Claire. What should we do with the gifts?”

“Well, Santa goes last in the parade, so there’s just enough time for us to load these gifts onto his sleigh, which is down by the church.”

“All right.”

“We can go do that and then come back.”

“Sure.”

The two of them make their way down to Santa’s sleigh in which Claire sees the person playing Santa getting ready. She gasps which makes Ethan scoff.

“What, you don’t get excited when you see Santa Claus?”

“When I was growing up and Santa came to the palace, we didn’t ask for gifts. It would be untoward for a family that had so much.”

“Wow. You don’t have to ask for things.”

“Well I know that now. But Santa doesn’t come to the palace anymore.”

“Well, then, this will be perfect.”

The two of them then quickly load up the gifts into the sleigh before heading back over to their seats to watch the parade. They watched as many trucks and carriages came by, including the one in which Mayor Adelaide was in, waving to the crowd. Once the parade was over, the carriage that Adelaide was in came over to the group and Tobias helped her out of it.

“You were great out there. Extra points for the wave.” Tobias said.

“Why thank you.” Adelaide then turned towards the queen. “I don’t know how you do it. My arm is so tired.”

“You’ll get used to it.”

The queen, Claire’s father, and his friend all started to walk towards the inn. Adelaide and Tobias started to walk together and Ethan went to follow when he stepped into a big puddle of water and snow.

“Sir?” Tobias said.

“I’m fine.” Ethan said with a huff. Adelaide and Tobias continue walking as Claire laughs and walks towards Ethan. “Well.”

“Well what?”

“I’m waiting for you to tell me I was right in your poor choice of winter footwear.”

Ethan huffs again. “Fine. You were right.”

“I know.” Claire turns and looks at the coachman of the carriage. “Hey, Stan, you think you could give my friend a lift back to the inn?”

“Absolutely.” Stan says.

“I’m fine to walk.”

“And I’m sure you’ll get frostbite.” She then points to the carriage. “Get in. Nurse’s orders. Come on, you have no choice. You’re in my domain now.”

Ethan looks at Claire, “Well, a carriage is my domain, and it would be incredibly awkward to ride alone, so…” he then lifts Claire into the carriage, “... in you go.” The two of them just stare at each other lovingly for a second before snapping out of it and sitting down on the carriage before it pulls away towards the inn.

Claire shivers and then grabs a blanket and begins to put them over Ethan’s feet. “”Whew. Here. Put your feet under this so they don’t become footsicles.”

“You never stop, do you?”

“Stop what?”

“Looking for ways to help people.”

“Sometimes it’s just easier to focus on other people’s needs.” Claire says with a sigh as she looks away from Ethan.

“You just described the life of a royal. Except the easy part.”

Claire then looks at Ethan as he looks away from her. “Must be a lot of pressure taking over for your father.

Ethan then looks towards Claire. “He was a great man. He did so much to bring Galwick together. The people loved him.”

“I’m sure they’ll come to love you too.”

“Not if I give another address like last year.”

“Come on. It couldn’t have been that bad.”

“I allowed my staff to post my speech on the internet.”

“Okay.”

“And then I read the comments.”

Claire winced. “Oh. No. You can’t do that. Never read the comments.”

“Well, I know that now.”

Claire giggles. “So, this speech is your… second chance.”

“That’s why I have to get it right.”

Claire looks at Ethan. “Can I be honest with you?”

Ethan looks at Claire and nods, “Mmm-hmm.”

“If you want to connect with your people, show them more of this side of you.” Ethan Faces forward and Claire leans her face closer to him. “As it turns out, you’re not half bad.”

“Ah, the insult disguised as a compliment.” He turns towards Claire. “It’s a very advanced technique.”

Claire laughs. “You know what I mean.”

The two of them then face forward as they reach a couple taking pictures, which makes Ethan turn away from them.

“Oh no. Don’t worry. They’re not taking pictures of us, just the carriage. It’s very quintessential New England.”

Ethan turns back around. “Yes but, convincing the people of Galwick I care about them is going to be a hard sell if they see me frolicking about in Connecticut.”

“I doubt anyone could accuse you of frolicking.”

At this point they catch up to where Adelaide and Tobias are walking and are about to pass them. Adelaide and Tobias then turn to watch as Claire and Ethan pass in the carriage.

“Really? You hired transportation? It’s not that long of a walk, guys.” Adelaide said.

“I had a footwear malfunction.”

“I see.” Tobias said.

“I could have gotten frostbite.”

After they had passed, Ethan turned back around. “Oh god. Tobias is never going to let me live this down.”

“No, I’m sure he won’t say anything else. I mean you are his boss.”

“I’m also his best friend from boarding school.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

The carriage comes to a stop in front of the inn. Ethan hops out and helps Claire get off of the carriage before thanking Stan for the ride, who then quickly pulls the carriage away. The two of them slowly pull their hands away from each other and glance at each other before heading into the inn.
