Coriolanus for most of the book: omg look it’s Sejanus I hate him. He’s so rich and uppity and sanctimonious I hate him so much I can’t believe people think we’re friends I hate him literally why do I keep having to save him 🙄
Coriolanus the SECOND Sejanus shows up: OH THANK GOD SEJANUS I MISSED YOU [HUGS HIM] maybe the world is worth living in! 🥹
Coriolanus like a day later: ugh he’s so dramatic what is he even worried about he’s gonna get me in trouble I hate himmmm 🙄

me seeing batshit insane advances in computer generated imagery and diffusion models and text-to-video and knowing there is nightmare imagery hiding in there the likes of which i cant even fathom and desperately wanting to dig it out with surgical instruments for My Films but also knowing that the Vibe At Large will see me using ML imagery and assume i am advocating for the automation-extinction of the human artist or that any engagement with ai is a direct endorsement of the insane accelerationist privacy and agency gobbling tech culture rn when it is neither of these things and i am just fascinated and disturbed and fascinated and disturbed in turn by the festering seam where humans and machines sew themselves together and i want to see how i can break it for my own purposes before further research sands it down to marketable unit sphere and kills it in my mind

I believe the way Sokka deals with his trauma oscillates between; my feelings aren't important, and there is no way anyone else feels like this.
There is also a middle ground where 'I wish someone could hug me so I could break down' but also, the feeling of 'I don't want anuyone to seem me like that' rolling around in his mind, and thus leading to suppress everything that he feels and believing he is doing great even though he is not.
What, no im not projecting my trauma to poor characters. I just resonate with sokka a little!
ok rn the film studies professor who lives in my head is yelling CHARACTERS DONT HAVE FEELINGS. obviously fandom as a discursive mode operates under a very different analytical framework but like. you get it.
anyway i reject this premise altogether because i don’t think sokka would ever think about anything in terms of feelings. if he has an emotion he must then explain that emotion as a thinking action or opinion. for example, he doesn’t say to yue, “i feel attracted to you,” he says, “i think you’re beautiful.” and to him, every action can be classified either as logical or illogical. so katara stealing from pirates is illogical because the benefits (katara getting back a piece of her culture that was stolen and studying it to better learn waterbending) do not outweigh the costs (being chased down and executed by pirates), but toph pulling scams is dangerous yet ultimately logical because the benefits (having more money for food and resources) do outweigh the costs (possibly getting caught if they’re not careful). and of course sokka rationalizes his own illogical actions through faulty logical reasoning, such as “i must sacrifice myself at the boiling rock because it’s my responsibility to fix this situation that i caused or die trying.” his logic is sometimes flawed or biased (as all human subjectivity is), but it’s think “i think this and therefore i must do this” rather “i feel this and therefore i must do this,” which is how katara largely operates, as someone who is also far more in touch with her own emotions (a skill sokka lacks to a truly atrocious extent). sokka cannot locate his own emotions because he would first have to acknowledge that he has emotions, which to him is a completely abhorrent thought, even though of course he very clearly does.
sokka definitely doesn’t want anyone to see him break down or be vulnerable in any capacity (he’s only vulnerable in front of zuko because he doesn’t care about zuko and assumes that both he and zuko will die soon anyway), and he’s normally resistant to hugs except for with his dad (although in the finale he does join their group hug and then hugs piandao later, so yay for growth). but it’s true that he keeps his trauma so bottled up that he basically just completely represses it. forgets his mother’s face as a way to cope with his grief. and also in sokka’s mind he literally thinks he’s normal. he thinks that everyone else is a freak and thank god he’s the most normal one here. so it’s not even that he’s like “my feelings aren’t important,” he’s like “feelings aren’t important.” and it’s not that he thinks “no one else feels like this,” he thinks “thank god i don’t have to feel all those messy complicated emotions that other humans do because i know how to completely detach myself from my emotions. it’s awesome how being less human means being less vulnerable. there are no downsides to this logic and it is very healthy.” not realizing that it’s like. actually a very harmful coping mechanism, and also that if anyone is capable of dehumanizing themselves to the point of objectivity (highly doubtful), he certainly hasn’t. but like. try telling him that.

people will truly go so far out of their way to avoid admitting that mike never loved el romantically like ‘he’s confusing true love with infatuation’ and ‘it’s not real adult love it was puppy love that faded as they got older’ and ‘the contrast with byIer just shows the difference between a childhood crush and genuine mature love’ like just say platonic. the word you’re looking for is platonic.

this is a short essay response of a meta this is batshit insane. im still on my shadowgast honeypot meta. this makes no sense. i have. citations.
also i wholeheartedly believe that up until the nicodranas incident, caleb was never fully himself around essek because 1) his latent spy training alarm bells went off as soon as he met him 2) caleb is an ex-volstrucker in an "enemy country" where he knows there's an empire mole and knew that essek was hiding something. he didn't know what. i don't believe that he thought it was All That. but caleb is extremely paranoid. right are we following. meanwhile he and the rest of the m9 were getting into essek's head bc essek had thee distinct disadvantage of being 1) alone 2) very nervous all the time 3) juggling contact with the bright queen and da'leth and just like, having a Bad Time, and the m9 popped in and he realized "ohh some people don't spend their lives in social espionage hell" and proceeded to, not at first but eventually, also assume that caleb was included in that statement (dairon implied that someone, likely the empire mole, had to have given that volstrucker the shank, and it's not confirmed that essek did but like. he did. and then he got over that paranoia a little bit because caleb is a good actor) and anyway my point is. i don't think essek really saw caleb outside of that double honeypotting scheme (which was beginning to devolve into a one-sided honeypot, with caleb still on the job while essek was slipping) and half-made plans to get caleb killed, and probably the false security of working with him (and veth) to make that spell, My Point Is. essek slipped. essek fell for it. he didn't fall in love with caleb, but he liked him and saw him as a peer and a friend.
and then the first really barefaced, honest thing that caleb ever said to him was "yes, friend, what are you doing?" echoing essek's mention of having friends to da'leth, and then following that with "i would love for you to see the sunrise, so if there is a reasonable explanation, we would love to hear it" anyway the first time that essek really saw caleb as who he is- an actor stepping away from a role, a spy, a grim counterpart to jester's concern and compassion ("what are you doing?"/"do you want to sit down?"/"i hold his hand")- and someone who still despite all that wanted to think the best for essek because he had more or less up until that point fully duped the m9! caleb didn't suspect a thing, he was just being paranoid!
the. the first time that caleb dropped some of the act- he went from honeypotting him to handling a crisis, the crisis being "essek is freaking the fuck out and we don't have time for this, we are actively in peace talks and essek could blow everything up if he slips, so im going to say what he needs to hear", paraphrased from a talks machina that's probably off yt and i don't really care to look up, but he wasn't lying to him. he wasn't telling him that it was all okay, because it wasn't, but "the difference between you and i is thinner than a razor" is caleb recognizing what essek is and saying that he's barely any different, both in terms of atrocities committed (whether that's true or not is another story but my point is that caleb believes it) and in terms of the game they were playing - essek lost that game. bad. he lost it real bad.
essek sees caleb for the first time when he's been caught and the person that he thought of as a friend sits in front of him and flatly tells him "i am going to kill you unless you give me a reason not to, right now". that's caleb. that's Caleb Widogast™. that's the guy that made a deal with beau and fjord that they would keep each other on the right path. that's the caleb that wants to get rid of ikithon. that's the caleb who misses his parents. that's the caleb who has hope for astrid and wulf. he wants to have hope for essek too- "you were not born with venom in your veins, you learned it". he's not lying about having hope for essek, he's lying about how much hope he has. and he's trying, desperately, to instill some of that hope in essek. and isn't that. like. thee caleb thesis. determination, despite a lack of hope. "you and i are both damned, but we can choose to do something and leave it better than it was before".

Anyway, free Palestine from z*onists, liberals and slothful hearts.
#if you’re still putting zionists on my dash#at this point I will just say you’re uneducated#but since it’s basically impossible to be uneducated on a phone recorded genocide#i will only say you either don’t care or you live in cognitive dissonance#and if you don’t care there’s nothing I can do for you#but if you care and you decide to ignore#then what are we even doing?#honestly that’s what I call privilege and chronically online activism#and fine it doesn’t matter to you bc this is tumblr and whatever#(seriously you don’t care that scumbag of Ben W*nston recruites young people for the IOF?#really you dont care the Az*ffs finance the IOF?)#seriously you don’t care about where you money goes? i dont believe it#what your money does? i don’t believe it#what drives absolutely insane is#people like me who speak up about this and call them (H L) out for the wrong things they fucking do#are ACTIVELY silenced and alienated blocked and hated on here#it’s actually insane to me that I AM the bad person here#when your fave goes grocery shopping with people who will put an bullet in a palestian child brain if they have a gun on them#(which they obviously do since they’re ✨*********✨)#I AM accused of being a hater. I AM accused of being the bad guy#i wish this was a joke lol#and I know people will hide behind and anonymous inbox and say ‘stop being a fan’ pr whatever#bc the point IS NOT being a fan at all#it’s that people are being ethnically cleansed from this fucking planet#with the complicity and responsibility of ‘western big democracies’ and YOU have a voice#you have the power of boycotting of speaking up of expressing your disapproval and disappointment#and you are not doing it because it feels safer for you to just support people who already have all the privileges and power and influence#and it’s disgusting really the way people act like this is normal or should be accepted as normal#and if this will be another round of Angie gets blocked by everyone in fandom so be it#i’m tired of being silenced and censored in this place

Lol! Tough and callous is probably the best way to describe my interpretation because at first how I write him in stories he can seem sweet. But there an underlying wrongness as you pull back the curtain and see he still cruel at the same time. The good 'family' man and the monster that is AFO both do very much exist at the same time.
I loved watching criminal stories, gothic, and learning about psychology in my youth. So I've learned a lot about people who can have seemingly nice and normal happy families, but are literally butchering prostitutes on weekends. So when I saw AFO I just keyed in and knew he had that kind of dissonance.
He 'loves' his family but isn't exactly normal either. He could date, be sweet and play the part but also use that very nature of knowing how to pretend to be normal to manipulate. He KNOWS people so knows how to play the part because he wants what everyone else has. When I write him it is intended to be sympathetic but not in a oh look at this poor thing, but in a he literally believes the BS he speaks.
So he IS the nice regular guy Hisashi Midoriya that working hard over seas to provide for his family. But he is also the ruthless AFO, so a freak and just some guy. Perfectly balanced, a cognitive dissonance to any ordinary person but it makes sense to him.
Why can't he have both the normal life everyone else has and be a demon lord? Without regard to the fact he is basically allowing Izuku and Inko to believe a lie, when to him he didn't lie. He just doesn't feel a need to mention it since doesn't need another incident. It not like he's involving them in that, Izuku got himself involved when he didn't want that. That isn't HIS fault.
And I'm glad you enjoyed my interpretation it something I love exploring. Having him be relatable with normal wants yet also showing how horrific his actions can be as he sees nothing wrong in his behavior.
How else do you think a man like him could live and hide for so long if can't even pretend to play the part of a normal guy? It's great to explore.

Pointed out there's something to be concerned about with Ameliance looking like a child/teenager on a recent "smash or pass" style poll post (that used very young-looking face screenshots.)
Proceeded to be called brian-dead, insane, etc. and be blocked by the poll blog for...responding to people keeping the argument going by @ ing me on the poll and other separate, unrelated polls.
Multiple people insisted I was incorrect, or attempted to explain that I was obviously wrong because she's 7ft tall and has kids (none of which is seen in the screenshots, and none of which negates that she -like most women in FF- has an extremely child-like face with wide-set and large eyes, a small mouth, and no wrinkles, flaws, or other signs of age...which seem reserved for male characters, ffs)
Totally rational behavior, awesome.
Anyway, @smashingorpassing prefers not to block people hurling accusations of brain-damage and insanity, in preference of blocking the person pointing out that FF (and anime-adjacent media in general) has a long-standing issue with making their characters look young, and their fans have a long-standing issue with viewing said infantilised people as fuckable waifus.
Frustrating to be blocked for, idk, some nonexistent and non-elaborated upon rule for that blog.
Update: aaaand they've removed all my comments. I could understand this if I violated literally ANY of their listed rules. I wasn't the one @ ing users outside of the walls of the post. I wasn't the one throwing out insults.
I've come to understand some FF fans are combative, complacent, hostile, and unquestioning of questionable trends in media, but it sucks that that extends to this blog and its moderators.
This is the "obviously a 40yo adult" BTW 🙄
