I've been told I'm good at dialogue😅

I struggle so much with choosing the right word to describe something sometimes, and also finding alternative words to use when I accidentally use the same word four or five times in the same paragraph😂

I like reading it! I think it adds to the atmosphere of the story, but I don't think I've ever done it myself except to copy and paste the German dialogue from Triangle😅

Lord of the Rings, I wrote a sequel featuring Aragorn and Arwen's daughter and posted it on Instagram back when I was active in the Tolkien fandom circa 2015 (posting fic on instragram probably sound super weird lmao but it was what people did, they'd post a pic corresponding to the fic and the chapter went in the captions)

'Sixty years is but the blink of an eye for a time-traveller like The Doctor. But for a television series, a Diamond Anniversary is an extremely rare and impressive occurrence.

BBC’s Doctor Who recently celebrated such a milestone with three one-hour specials which, for the first time, streamed globally on Disney+.

Russell T Davies, fresh from his success on ’80s AIDS miniseries It’s A Sin, returned to the show he brought back so successfully in 2005 to the BBC. Bolstering his team are returning producers Julie Gardner and Phil Collinson, and Jane Tranter, the woman who was instrumental in bringing back Doctor Who in 2005. Bad Wolf, the company founded by Tranter and Gardner in 2015, currently produces the show with BBC Studios.

Another big returning name return was David Tennant, who played the 10th Doctor from 2005-2010 and who also returned for the show’s 50th Anniversary in 2013. Beloved by fans and audiences alike, Tennant’s Doctor was a big ratings draw.

Though, it’s not all returning past glories for Doctor Who. There is a new actor portraying the Time Lord, Ncuti Gatwa, who is taking over the titular role with the the forthcoming season 14, and who made his debut with the specials. The Rwandan-Scottish actor made a name for himself as gay teenager Eric Effiong in the Netflix comedy series Sex Education and recently starred as “Artist Ken” in Barbie. His first full season debut in the TARDIS will come in spring 2024, with a premiere date yet to be set.

Not only that, powerhouse streamer Disney+ is now on board to broadcast these new episodes across the world (with the exception of the U.K. and Ireland, where it still airs on BBC)...

What Happened in the 60th Anniversary Specials?

Showrunner Davies brought Tennant back with a cosmic bang and a galactic-sized nod to fan service with an adaptation of a Doctor Who Weekly comic strip first published in 1980.

The first of the three specials, “The Star Beast,” was a 60-minute romp that wonderfully evoked the Tenth Doctor-era, complete with cutesy alien The Meep (think The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda, but bigger and hairier) and the return of much-loved companion, Donna Noble (played by Catherine Tate, The Office).

Last seen in the Tenth Doctor’s finale in 2010, Donna’s return posed a fatal conundrum for the Doctor: If she remembered her past with the Doctor, she would die. Thankfully, writer Davies had a workaround, meaning that the 60th anniversary celebrations did not result in the death of a companion but, in fact, allowed Donna to live unharmed and enjoy some further adventures in time and space with her best friend.

The main question, though, was just why the Fourteenth Doctor, played by Tennant, had the same face and body of the Tenth Doctor, also played by Tennant. This was an unprecedented move in the history, or Whostory, of the show. Special number two, “Wild Blue Yonder,” traveled to the end of the universe and delved into the uncanny, but still posed the query as to why that particular face returned. (It’s a good face, we weren’t complaining).

Fans would have to wait until the third and final special, “The Giggle,” before the mystery was finally revealed. And it was all down to Donna. She surmised that he changed his face and then found her to “come home.” The Doctor commented, “I’ve never been so happy in my life,” as he sat with the Noble family, not fighting aliens and enjoying a spot of lunch.

The Final Special Had More Up Its Intergalactic Sleeve

Aside from the return of fan favorite Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) and ’80s-era companion Melanie Bush (Bonnie Langford), there was an even bigger returnee waiting in the wings.

Making an all-singing, all-dancing return to Doctor Who was the formidable villain, The Toymaker. Played by Neil Patrick Harris (best known for portraying Barney Stinson on the CBS series, How I Met Your Mother), the Toymaker made his debut opposite the First Doctor (William Hartnell) in the 1966 four-part serial, “The Celestial Toymaker.”

The character was originally played by English actor Michael Gough, who would go on to play Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred in the four Batman films directed by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher. Though, it’s hard to picture Gough pulling off NPH’s manic routine to The Spice Girls’ 1997 hit, “Spice Up Your Life”.

And then there was the first appearance of the new Doctor, Gatwa. But this was no simple regeneration, as seen in Doctor Who so many times previously. Just as the return of a previous actor to play a new regeneration of the Doctor was unprecedented, Davies debuted another new element in the show’s mythology: “bigeneration.” This left fans shocked as the Fourteenth Doctor, seemingly regenerating as per usual, actually split into two, revealing Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor standing, looking at one another just as surprised as the millions of Whovians watching across the globe.

What is Bigeneration and What Does it Mean for the Future?

As is explained in the behind-the-scenes show Doctor Who Unleashed, “instead of a new body taking over from the old body, the new body separates from the old body, and both are left alive.”

This means that there are two distinct Doctors roaming the universe at the same time. While it might take some time for Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor to pick up the keys to his TARDIS and start planet-hopping, as he seems quite happy to kick back in England for a while, it’s possible — nay, highly likely — that the Gatwa and Tennant Doctors will meet again.

For the time being, though, Davies has stated that there are “no plans” for a Fourteenth Doctor return, adding that he’s “parked” on Earth with Donna Noble for a “happy life.”

Interestingly, Davies has also suggested that this has even bigger implications for Doctor Who. This bigeneration has created a new timeline where all previous incarnations have been affected, with every Doctor continuing to exist after their own regeneration. Davies may be joking when he refers to this as a “Doctorverse,” but he has established “The Whoniverse” (bringing in previous spinoffs such as Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures) so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that audiences could witness various team-ups featuring Gatwa with previous Doctors at any moment. Or, perhaps more spinoff series could be on the way featuring the past Doctors on their own...'

Friends, Romans, Countrymen. I did it.

I rewatched Strange Magic late last night on a whim.

It’s been, as far as I can determine, at least four years since I had last seen this movie. Probably closer to five. It’s been. A Minute. And I was so horribly worried that I would find all of its faults far more glaring than I had when it first consumed my life back in 2015. That I wouldn’t find the magic in it the way I did before.

I was both right and wrong.

I did, indeed, find some things more flawed, to the point of genuinely cringing in a couple places. However, I also came out remembering exactly why this movie captivated me for as long as it did.

I’m going to ramble in more detail about both things, if you’re so inclined to read more.

Things I found as bad or worse this time around:

The pacing. Dear lord, the pacing of this movie is a fucking trainwreck. I knew it the first time I watched it and it was the one critique I would always agree with. It’s just, it’s so bad. I can’t even tell you how I’d fix it but it just. It needs an overhaul please.

Like, in my memory it was just the first half that was paced poorly. Once you got into the second half, things improved.

My memory was wrong. It’s a mess the whole way through.

Tragically, Griselda. I always found her character a little grating but at least sort of endearing... but it has. gotten worse. The matchmaking was only good in providing the backdrop for Bog and Marianne to rant about how much they hate romance but every other scene with it made me feel like Bog must. I lowkey wanted to put my head through a wall.

Plum, too, was a little more annoying than I remembered. In general the whole “Love is Strange” scene is probably the one I struggled with the most on this rewatch.

The kaleidoscope bit at the end. Which again, I was always kinda... unsure about but like, everything else about the ending is so good and then that just really. throws the whole groove off and it’s sad.

Also, I wouldn’t necessarily call it bad but like, all of Bog’s scenes in the first half of the movie are so melodramatic and I know that’s the point but I was still like ‘christ my dude we get it you’re ~evil~ now please chill for five seconds’

- and that’s really it. All told, while these were definitely more noticeable faults upon watching this movie again, I don’t think they were enough to truly hamper my enjoyment of the rest of it.

Speaking of...

Things I found as good or better this time around:

Marianne. My beloved punk rock fairy princess. I absolutely adore how three-dimensional she is as a character. They give her the whole badass makeover training sequence and then spend the rest of the movie showing you its cracks. Showing you that she never fully outgrew the romantic she was at heart. She was just scared of letting people see that side of her after being hurt. She’s bitter and angry and touch-starved and sympathetic and caring and she’s allowed to be all of these things and none of them contradict each other.

Marianne and Dawn’s relationship. Holy shit I forgot how good that was. We see only glimpses of it but every single one of them is perfection and so realistic. This is how sisters behave. They drive each other crazy and point out each other’s faults and make each other want to tear their hair out and if anyone hurt them there would be hell to pay. All of their conversations feel so... grounded in reality for a fairy rock opera musical.

On that note, a lot of the dialogue is just, well delivered and sounds incredibly natural. It took me by surprise.

Sunny! Sunny also surprised me with how much I liked him. His humor is one of the things that has aged the best in this movie and I really enjoyed his character. You can really see how he is a good guy who was just, very easily manipulated and spends the rest of the movie trying to fix his fuck-up.

The singing. Similar to my point about line delivery, the... way the characters sing in this movie is really well done. I don’t know how to explain it but the way they use songs in this movie really feels like they’re using it as dialogue. Like, there’s plenty of meta jokes about people breaking into song but it also feels like it’s a natural part of this world. People just sing their feelings here, and it feels believable. It’s fascinating.

The animation - specifically the character animation. (Like, the movie has gorgeous background shots, we all know this.) I won’t deny that the detail in the faces gets uncanny valley in places but it’s worth it for the expressiveness that it allows. There are so many incredible face journeys, so many subtle shifts in body language, so much that gets to be said without words - either spoken or sung - and it’s just as good as I remember it.

Speaking of things that are just as good as I remember. Yeah, you guessed it.

Bog and Marianne’s relationship is still just, top fucking tier.

Like, it goes back to what I said about expressiveness in the animation. I remembered the big things about these two. I remembered the sword fight flirting; I remembered the ranting about hating love together; I remembered the declaration of love at the end set to “Wild Thing” which perfectly encapsulated their personalities.

I had forgotten how much of their relationship is progressed through small gestures and lingering looks. Things like Bog leaving his staff behind after their fight, and later returning her sword to her - both shows of trust and respect that Marianne is clearly unused to. Things like the way he looks at her throughout the entire “Strange Magic” sequence as he shows her his home and hopes she’ll find beauty in it. Things like the whole face journey she goes through when it’s revealed he survived his castle collapsing, realizing that she loves him. Things like how you can see on their faces that they’re constantly torn between hope and absolute terror at their growing feelings for each other.

All of these things are done wordlessly and it’s very well done.

(also man, having re-read a bunch of my fics ahead of this I was kind of like ‘wow a through-line throughout all of this is Bog being just, like, absolutely whipped by Marianne from the start’ and friends, upon rewatch it hit me that that was not just some romance novel tropes sneaking into fic - I took that shit straight from the source. My goblin man really was enamored with her INSTANTLY. It was fucking hilarious.)

Anyway, thanks for coming along with me for this journey. I came out of it just kind of accepting, yeah, this is not what I would call a Good Movie. But it gave me so many things that I loved, and still love, and really, that’s what matters.

Also now I wanna fucking draw fanart again. That’s wild.

A/N: Hey peeps! I’ve been craving more Tom Sturridge content and while searching, I noticed that he was in the 2015 version of Far From The Madding Crowd. I watched this years ago but didn’t make the connection when I watched The Sandman. The powers of moustaches! Would love to know how you’re all doing and what you think of the story so far. Another gust of cold air bristles your skin as your location is transformed again.

The threshold to the library looms with its incredibly tall doors. Like last time, they move by themselves to admit your entrance.

You are once more staggered by the opulence and scale, and as you walk with Morpheus, your eyes are scanning around for any signs of the Dreaming’s Librarian.

Morpheus brings you to the same table; it is strewn with collections of texts and pieces of crisp white paper. Although you can’t make out the words on these pages, you can see that the handwriting is handsome and masterful.

Your companion turns to you.

“I apologise. I must continue some research for a new dream I am planning to create. We may be here for a while.”

“That’s okay, I understand.” You pluck a random book off of the shelf. “There’s plenty to keep me occupied.”

He conveys his thanks with an incline of his head, takes a seat and begins to carefully pick through his own book.

You settle into the chair furthest from Morpheus to give him privacy, wiggling as you attempt to find the most comfortable angle on the squashy seat pad.

There’s a gnawing feeling of sadness in your chest; you force it away and try reading.

You manage a few sentences before your attention wanes.

It’s disappointing and frustrating and causes you to let out a little huff. You cross one leg over the other and roll your shoulders back a few times.

You can do this. You assure yourself internally. It’s like everything else that you have no motivation for. Persist, and you will eventually find your groove again.

Unfortunately, however, the more time you expend trying to make it happen, the more you find your melancholy begins to bed in. It's a pressure, splintering you apart, like a piece of wood being exposed to too much force.

You can’t stop recalling how elated your ex looked in the bar. There is no denying it was a genuine joy; you know them and their facial expressions all too well.

It was during times like these that wished for a delete button to permanently clear out the memory.

You steal a glance at Morpheus.

His interest is completely engulfed by the text in front of him, his eyes dart back and forth as he quickly processes the information. The idea of interrupting his flow is out of the question.

You try listing things in your head that are positives:

You are safe here. Morpheus is looking after you. You are going to wake up feeling rested.

It works for a bit but then your mind is drifting back to that diamond ring.

You abandon your reading, wrapping your arms around your middle despondently.

You hear footsteps.

Lucienne rounds the corner. She wears a jacket and waistcoat in a sumptuous shade of plum purple and you feel it suits her very well. In her arms are a number of books.

“Lord Morpheus,” she says formally, yet cheerfully.

“Lucienne.”

You drop your pitiable stance just as she notices you.

You instinctively smile at her but you know full well that it doesn't reach your eyes. “Hi Lucienne. It’s great to see you again.”

“It’s lovely to see you too, Y/N.”

She pops a large tome back on a shelf and then turns back to you, moving her head to capture your attention.

“Are you okay?” She mouths wordlessly.

You nod a little too eagerly to be believed.

Worry manifests in her expression but she swivels away to finish putting back the remaining volumes. She then takes a couple of steps towards you.

“Y/N. I’ve just remembered I have something to show you that I think you will find really interesting. Would you like to see?”

Taken off guard, your mouth falls open. “Umm, yes please.”

You fumble with your book as you nervously get up.

You follow her, climbing a few staircases, taking you a fair distance away from Morpheus.

You slip into an alcove set with a blue toned stain glass window.

Lucienne’s eyes are brimming with empathy as she asks her question.

“You’re not really okay, are you?”

The muscles of your face scrunch involuntarily. Your eyes are burning like you’ve just accidentally rubbed fresh chilli juice in them.

“I’m fine,” you lie.

She looks at you with even more concern. “Y/N.”

A single tear streaks down your cheek.

“Not again,” you whisper, using a couple of fingers to wipe away the trail.

“I’m sorry,” you squeak.

“It’s okay,” she soothes. “I know that societal norms in the waking world often discourage humans from discussing their feelings but, I promise, you don’t have to hide here.”

There’s a ledge below the window that is big enough to sit on so you perch on the cool stone. Lucienne mirrors you.

Her skin is soft and warm as she takes your hand.

"You can tell me anything."

And so you do tell her. You tell her about the proposal. The conversation with your ex that ended things. How you had stood in the kitchen, avoiding them while they packed their things. How you had desperately tried not to cry the whole time and how the second you heard the front door close you had finally broken down. The horrifying nightmares. Your fear of damaging the Dreaming. The people at work talking about you behind your back. And the engagement ring incident.

The only details you omit are kissing Morpheus and your romantic thoughts about him.

She listens attentively and wordlessly.

"I'll be fine, eventually,” you say at the end of your spiel.

“I’m sure you will be. But right now, you have every reason to not be. You have been through a lot in a short space of time. Take your time. We’re all here for you, myself, Matthew, Lord Morpheus.”

“Thank you, Lucienne,” you whisper.

You accept her offer of a hug instantly.

“Remember to be kind to yourself,” she says as she holds you tightly.

“I’ll try.”

Lucienne walks you back to Morpheus and then leaves to continue her work.

He’s standing, perusing the titles on the spines of the books.

You position yourself beside him; he acknowledges your presence with a small nod.

“You are well?” Morpheus asks.

“I’m okay.” You shift your weight nervously from one foot to the other.

“How have you been in the time that we haven’t spoken?” You ask timidly.

He takes so much time in replying that you fear you have miss-stepped.

“I have been thinking on what you said. It is necessary for me to have a certain level of control over myself. I feel the subconscious emotions of every being capable of dreaming, and if I were to lose control of the suppression I exercise, the consequences would be dire. However, you were right; I hold myself to oftentimes impossible standards and I realise that it is neither constructive nor healthy. So I must thank you for helping me question my thought processes.”

You suddenly realise that he is staring at you with such tenderness that your cheeks heat with blood.

“Hey, boss. I’ve finished with the greenhouse- Oh, sorry, didn’t realise you had company.”

Morpheus quickly lengthens the 5 centimetre gap between you. When had he got so close to you? You query this internally before peering out from behind Morpheus’ frame to locate the source of the voice.

You can’t help but freeze in astonishment at what you see.

A being with the body of scarecrow and the head of a pumpkin stands holding a broom. Their elongated, skinny frame is clad in blue dungarees and a white shirt, accessorised with a red neck tie, tan gloves and a brown belt.

“Y/N, I would like to introduce The Dreaming’s janitor, Mervyn Pumpkinhead.”

You are suddenly taken back a couple of decades when your childhood friend had got a pet rabbit and the only name they could think to call it was Bunny.

“Nice to meet you, Mr Pumpkinhead.”

The outsides of his carved mouth move into a grin. “Call me Merv.”

Morpheus speaks again. “I believe you were asking me a question, Mervyn. How can I help?”

“Uhh, yeah, where do you want me to take a look at next?”

“The portrait gallery, please.”

“Sure thing, boss.”

Merv looks between the two of you, an awkward look on his bright orange face.

“Erm, I’ll leave you to it.”

“Thank you, Mervyn.”

He pops his broom over his shoulder and walks away.

Morpheus looks back at you with a little smile.

“I believe you have managed the recommended 8 hours of sleep now.”

Your pulse elevates. You’re going to be left you alone with your thoughts.

“It doesn’t feel like I’ve been here that long,” you say quietly.

“Time passes differently in the Dreaming.”

You nod, squeezing your eyes shut for a couple of seconds.

“You will get through this, Y/N.” He maintains perfect eye contact as if to convince you with the solidarity of his stare.

You manage a half-hearted smile. “I hope so.”

“I will see you tomorrow.”

He raises his hand and trepidation twitches in your muscles. You breathe slowly to try and counteract the unpleasant feeling.

“Thank you, Morpheus,” you say just before he wakes you from your slumber.

2013 Lover Diaries Transcripts

This week, I spent most of my time watching TV, some of it swimming in the pool, a significant amount of time feeling incomplete, then wondering why because I have the life I’ve always wanted. Then hating myself for feeling in any way ungrateful for this mostly perfect life. But this mostly perfect life can feel a lot like being a tiger in a wonderful enclosure. It’s pretty in there, but you can’t get out. It’s peculiar to me that after all these years, I still get so anxious when I see a group of people staring, amassed outside my house, pointing, camera phones up … They could never imagine how much that feels like being hunted. And no matter how big my house is or how many albums I sell, I’m still going to be the rabbit. Because the hunters will always outnumber me. The spectators will stand by, shaking their heads, going “That poor girl.” But the point is, they’re still watching. Everyone loves to watch a good hunt. I worry for my generation and the ones after that because they will never truly experience a moment without attempting to capture it and own it. I am of the generation where you see a beautiful flower growing up through the cracks in the sidewalk, and you pick it. You take it with you to show everyone you know. Whereas I think our ancestors might come upon a beautiful flower and stop and think ‘Wow. That is really beautiful.“ Nevermind that picking a flower kills it, the same way taking a picture of a moment can ruin it altogether. They needed to possess things. They need photographic proof that they were there. They need to then post that photo online so their friends can see it. So that they can spend all day checking the comments underneath. We played three shows in Auckland, New Zealand and they went so well. I was a little worried I wouldn’t be able to snap right back into this show, but I actually feel like I’m putting on better shows now. My posture, my movement, it’s all so much more pronounced and I finally feel in control of my legs and feet. Ella (Lorde) came and hung out with me the day of the first show, at my hotel and we caught up. Today we all flew to Sydney. Christmas is right around the corner, so I’ve been obsessing over what to get Austin. And I decided on a sentimental gift rounding up all the hilarious texts and memes he’s sent me in the last year, and putting them in a scrap book called ‘Shit My Brother Says’. So I got a printer and I worked on the book ALL day in my room instead of going out. Tomorrow is the show!

The unmade PUSS IN BOOTS sequel...

In an alternate timeline, the 2nd PUSS IN BOOTS movie would've been released during the holiday season of 2018... It would've been a significantly different movie, too.

It would not have been directed by Joel Crawford, but rather Chris Miller, who directed the first PUSS IN BOOTS movie, and SHREK THE THIRD as well. He's not *that* Chris Miller of the Phil Lord-Chris Miller duo, but a long-time DreamWorks Animation veteran whose work goes all the way back to their debut feature ANTZ.

The title was PUSS IN BOOTS: NINE LIVES & 40 THIEVES.

It had, you may have guessed it, a 1001 Arabian Nights setting.

The concept art for this picture suggested something pretty damn cool. I absolutely love PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH, in fact it is my favorite film in the entire SHREK franchise and just a new favorite movie of mine, period.

But... I'm not gonna lie, I would really love to see what *this* movie would've been like. I'm sure it would've had a tone and directing style similar to that of the first PUSS IN BOOTS, and the visual style for it would've been about the same: Much more hyper-detailed with ornate textures everywhere (look at Puss' sword in that movie and the other SHREKs, and look at his much simplified sword in THE LAST WISH), no framerate fluctuations, etc.

The SHREK series had often covered European fairy tales, and the first PUSS IN BOOTS movie married such fairy tales like Jack and the Beanstalk, and the Golden Goose, to a more old-school adventure genre: Think Zorro, Three Musketeers, etc. Threw in spaghetti westerns for good measure. It was a sandier side of the SHREK world, deserts, and Spanish and Latin American-inspired towns. THE LAST WISH retains all of that, the magical "Dark Forest" being not too far removed from the European fairy tale aesthetic. That whole storybook-inspired look they were going for put it firmly in the European fairy tale, I feel. Again, best of both worlds... But there's other worlds, right?

NINE LIVES & 40 THIEVES would've taken us more East, and I'd really love to see that in the fairy tale universe of SHREK. Who's to say they can't... take that idea off the shelf again? After all, THE LAST WISH ends with a direct lead-in to a fifth SHREK movie. Perhaps SHREK 5 can incorporate the Arabian Nights setting? Or a third PUSS IN BOOTS movie where we only follow "Team Friendship" on a new adventure?

About that... Very few Western animated movies spawn ongoing spin-off feature film series. DESPICABLE ME scored with the MINIONS movie in 2015, and that got an equally ginormous sequel this past summer. That was the inverse of LIGHTYEAR to the TOY STORY franchise, LIGHTYEAR could've been a big hit and could've spawned more space adventures with the human/actual space ranger Buzz... But alas, no cigar. (I'm honestly bummed about that, I was ready for more!) THE LEGO MOVIE tried to do this, but I feel Warner Bros. made the mistake of having the studio make two spin-off movies - unrelated to one another, LEGO BATMAN and LEGO NINJAGO - *before* THE LEGO MOVIE 2 proper. Maybe if LEGO MOVIE 2 opened in 2017 as originally planned, with BATMAN and NINJAGO afterwards, we could've had plenty of different theatrical LEGO stories to choose from. DreamWorks' own MADAGASCAR franchise couldn't have a side series of PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR movies, the first one - released back in 2014 - was deemed a box office disappointment. Its "flopping" actually lead to a big restructuring month at DreamWorks, which took NINE LIVES & 40 THIEVES off their schedule...

It was very possible that the movie was no more, much like other DreamWorks pictures that got the axe at the time: BOLLYWOOD SUPERSTAR MONKEY, B.O.O.: BUREAU OF OTHERWORLDLY OPERATIONS, etc. Thankfully, PUSS Dos remained in limbo rather than being outright cancelled.

But NINE LIVES & 40 THIEVES didn't make it, we got THE LAST WISH instead.

But now... THE LAST WISH has been a leggy box office success, a record-breaking one at that, too. It's actually the first post-1999 wide-release animated movie since THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE to make more than 10x its opening weekend gross... EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE came out in 2000... So that makes **two**, **two** animated movies released in the domestic market since 1999 that scored 10x their opening weekend grosses... WOW!

So yes, I'd imagine the PUSS IN BOOTS train won't be stopping. I think it's a strong possibility that we get *both* new SHREK sequels *and* new PUSS IN BOOTS sequels. Puss showed with both movies that he can more than hold his own and have his own long-form adventures w/ Kitty Softpaws and Perrito. The original made over $500m worldwide back in 2011/12, and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars much like this film, which looks to finish up with over $450m worldwide. Hey, is it possible somebody else gets a new movie, too? I feel there's a lot of ground to cover in Shrek's fairy tale world that goes beyond Shrek's swamp, Far Far Away, San Ricardo, Del Mar, the lands inbetween, etc.... A magic carpet that's reminiscent of the one in most ALADDIN interpretations appears in THE LAST WISH as part of Big Jack Horner's collection, so maybe that Arabian Nights-style world is still out there and might be featured in a future SHREK/PUSS IN BOOTS movie?

I'd love to see that, honestly. Since the world of SHREK is back in business, I say go explore and expand that world!

again, the name. BUT. He lives in Clock Tower and Marty goes there as a dare. There were rumors of it being haunted, but you know. Marty is not a chicken, does what the rumors say to do (like a mini ritual). At first the Time Lord seems irratated and annoyed. But he seems cool :')

making a separate post for this so I don't hijack a gifmakers post but

@burntstay u literally have no idea! the entire past 2 years have been insane so excuse my rambling post

1. I went to see Dan last Nov and Dec. I went in November when he came to Seattle and got SO excited to finally meet him after so many years that I stumbled all over the MnG and couldn't respond to his very gentle kind compliments. So I flew to Oakland to see him again 😭 It hurt my bank account but not only did I meet him at that show during the MnG but he talked to me during the show too (interactive comedy show and I said I'd fuck the cinnamon toast crunch mascot bc he's a twink. he booed me but then brought it up several more time 💀)

November and December, respectively. (yeah he did accidentally get that fucking silver marker on my arm 💀)

2. Also in November, I had the opportunity to catch Kurtis Conners set he was doing in Seattle :] I went to the early show in the balcony bc it was what i could afford and Loved it sooo much but couldn't see bc I didn't have glasses at the time and at the end when I was calling my friend to talk about it, someone offered me 3rd row tickets because they had to cancel for a family emergency. I took them, could see the set, and it was just as funny the 2nd time!

the next day I'd taken my friend to Pikes Place (popular indoor/outdoor multi-vendor permanent market in Seattle) and ran into him and Jenna in the comics store!

^ me being so insanely happy but embarrassed bc I was partially non verbal and was trying so hard to communicate with him. (he was so incredibly kind and patient and then I helped him find the script he was looking for 😌 <- I do not work at that store)

now rapid fire! I also got to finally see Cirque! my old boss at the club had an extra ticket and brought me along!! (I have tried to sew Cirque THREE times and circumstances have always gotten in the way. mostly me moving abruptly like a week before the date they were in town)

In April, I got to see Hippocampus (one of my FAVE indie bands idc idc) and the guitarist Nathan gave me a pick! I also got to see Conan Gray again (saw him in 2019 without knowing who he was and got obsessed) and Cavetowns show with Tessa Violet. and Tessa RECOGNIZED ME which would have been insane anyways but I look SO different from the past times I've seen her!! I also saw some smaller bands and they were some of the most lovely kind caring people ever!

and then in June I saw 5SOS for the first time. I've been listening to them since I was a little tumblrina in 2014 and I cried so hard during their show. pure unadulterated nostalgia and joy. it was a really good show too (and that month my BFF who I usually go out to Philly to see once a year was able to come to ME because of a work conference 🥹 and my partner came up for our yearly 1 month together!)

also that month I met a comedian I ADORE!!! I found him by accident on Dry Bar Comedy in maybe 2015? and have watched his stuff on YouTube and followed him on Twitter since and I randomly ran into him in a vintage store in Tacoma??? And of course the first thing my dumb ass said instead of "oh wow it's Shayne Smith!! I'm a huge fan" no... I said "YO it's the guy I showed u that one time when I was drunk!!!" to my sister 😭😭 He luckily is a really dope guy, thought it was very funny, and danced around with me

In October I went to a music festival out east and saw a BUNCH of my favorite bands and King Princess said I looked hot, so highlight of my compliments fr (and saw mitski!) Lorde was coming but her set got massively delayed due to faulty tech and I had to make the last train so I didn't get stranded and did not get to see her.

Also I got matching tattoos with my other bff who I flew to seattle to stay with me for a week 🥹 hi @catholicdaredevil

which circles us back to the November/December stuff I talked about first cuz I got excited

The rest of the winter was just struggling through till I saw the sun again but I DID get to meet a long term internet friend at the convention in Seattle (s/o to @pjsforestkid for so lovingly dealing with my low energy the whole day)

April I saw Noel Miller live!!! June my partner came up and we traipsed around

and then September and October I got to sew 4 hozier shows, was barricade for 3 of them (and have professional photos for all 3 times I was barricade which is INSANE!!!!!), hozier called me out on stage for my shirt, I got posted on his ig, and I met almost the entirety of a friend group I've had since 2019 AND DanandPhilGames returned from the hiatus

it's been an insane almost 2 years I finally feel like my life is sorting itself out and I'm so overjoyed

this is such a long fucking post but your tags just reminded me of all the joy and love I have been experiencing and the love that continues!!! I am so happy :)

BL & Me: 2023 Edition

To celebrate my full first year as a BL fan I decided I wanted to do an end of the year list. Something to commemorate the absolutely wonderful fandom year I've had. Prior to watching my first BL, I had not participated in any fandoms since 2015. Getting back into it reminded how much fun it is and I've met and followed so many amazing people in the last year (technically, I watched my first BL in October 2022, so it's been more than a year...).

These lists are going to focus on the BLs (and two Thai dramas that wanted to be and probably should have been BLs) that came out during 2023 (or their finales aired in late January through February). Since I'm still playing catch up on older BLs, there are several that I watched for the first time this year but I might do a separate post for that.

Total # of BLs watched this year: 42

Thailand: 38 Dramas, 1 Movie

Japan: 1

Korea: 0

Taiwan: 2

Clearly I need to watch more from Korea. Currently I'm making my way through Taiwan's BLs so once I am sufficiently caught up on those, I will be moving over to catch up on Korean ones. Until the last month or so, I had never seen a Taiwanese BL, so that's what started me on watching those - I'm almost done with the ones that have been recommended to me so far.

It's plain to see that I love Thailand's approach to BL's the most; they are what hooked me into BL and keep me watching.

Most Anticipated BLs: Bed Friend, Between Us, Cutie Pie 2 You, Moonlight Chicken, Naughty Babe

My Highest Rated Shows on MyDramaList: I Feel You Linger in the Air (10), La Pluie (10), Moonlight Chicken (10), Our Dining Table (10), Laws of Attraction (9.5), Midnight Museum (9.5), My Dear Gangster Oppa (9.5), Only Friends (9.5), Shadow (9.5) and Kiseki: Dear to Me (9.5).

It's a very interesting mix of shows here - one from Taiwan, one from Japan, and the two regular Thai dramas.

Favorite New Trope: Waltzing Gays. 2023 said, "Let the gays dance!" and they did.

Memorable Fandom Moments (The Good, The Bad, And The Absurd):

Altering the name of Moonlight Chicken. When we heard the name of the show, it was impossible not to make fun of it just a little. Many a nickname/play on words was created for this show and it was so much fun to see what others would come up with.

The ONN fandom protesting the O part of their ship landing a new BL and a new BL partner (complete with hiring a truck to drive around with a sign).

The Pit Babe Omegaverse post breaking containment and topping out at just over 69k notes (NOICE).

Playing "Spot the Cameo" during Midnight Museum and watching while GMMtv marched out practically their entire pool of talent for the show and yet still needed both Gun and Nannon to play more than one character.

Playing "Spot the Cameo" for Kiseki: Dear to me as they practically had all the major BL actors cameo in the show.

The fandom exhaustion over the marketing/casting announcements for Red Peafowl and the eventual fandom decision to just worship our lord and savior Kuhn Feathers instead.

Best/Worst Use of Product Placement: (you decide which is which)

KanghanSailom bathroom kiss (Dangerous Romance episode 6?) - I've tried to like it. I have. It's Perth. It's Chimon. It's AWKWARD. Yikes.

DanNai "locked in a room all night" kiss (Shadow episode 9) - it's bad because it's not reciprocated and IT HURTS DAMN IT.

Most Surprising/Memorable Show Production Moments:

Finding out while watching Pit Babe episode one that it was Omegaverse after being told that aspect had been removed for the show.

𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑(𝐒): I like spicy / savory foods a lot. I enjoy food a lot and don't have a ton of food aversions - so I enjoy everything from time to time and like variety rather a lot. Also, I like lemons. Both the writing kind and the flavor.

𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂: I am one of those odd ones that really likes at least a handful of things from every genre. I have pretty eclectic taste in music though if I had to pick one genre it would probably be Gaelic/Celtic folk? Or more modern folk music? I like showtunes a lot, too and 00's rock / punk rock. But a little bit of everything (all of the time). I haven't gotten much of a start on my 2024 playlist, but here's 2023's.

the inspo for whatever i write on the blackboard is literally just,...... googling 'PALEONTOLOGY NOTES/LECTURE' and trying to find something that will fit!! I'm a psych major so bones and rocks and al that good stuff is sooooo out of my orbit. and then equivalating that to pokemon??? i spend more time trying to think of what to write on that board than drawing tbh

Dragon Ball Z: Abridged Episode 19 Review

Go Space Broncos!

So enters the Ginyu Force, and with their flamboyant style also comes one of the best streaks of episodes in Dragonball Z: Abridged. The entirety of the Ginyu Force arc (mini-arc?) is excellent, partially because it plays to Team Four Star’s strength by being a series of back-to-back high energy battles, but mostly because Team Four Star uses this series of battles to free themselves from their perceived constraints and experiment with changing the content of the show significantly.

With that said, this episode doesn’t do much of that, with the exception of Gudlo’s first attack and the Wheel of Death, as it spends its time introducing us to these fairly ridiculous characters. And it does so in a way that harkens back to the strengths of their first truly great episode, “Saiyans? On My Planet?”, by having the cast of villains and the cast of heroes engage in a shouting match/preliminary gameshow before they fight. This team of flamboyant villains interacting with our well-established and fearful heroes works incredibly well, and their brash personalities play off Krillin’s insecurity particularly well.

Episode 19 also does a really good job of humanizing Guldo, establishing him as one of Vegeta’s surely numerous punching bags, which allows us to fairly easily empathize with him, since our heroes have very recently been in a similar position. And when Vegeta throws a dog treat at him, we’re left with a twinge of pain alongside our laughter, which makes Guldo’s death all the more hilarious and poignant, as Vegeta decides to humiliate him one last time before ending his life.

The other villains don’t get this same empathic treatment this episode, but that’s alright, as they are all as well established as time could’ve allowed, with Ginyu coming off as a calm and confident leader, Burter as the “fastest in the universe,” Recoome as a classic wrestling champion, and Jeice as the charming charismatic Space Australian. It’s all a wonderful setup, and it leaves me incredibly excited for what’s to come.

If you’re curious as to why I don’t refer to Episode 19 by name in this review, it’s because the title is entirely in hiragana, which I cannot read.

Ginyu: “Ginyu Force, assemble!” Burter: “Speed of light, and strength of all,” Recoome: “The Ginyu Force shall make them fall,” Jeice: “Lord King Cold’s Army’s strongest force,” Guldo: “We’ll beat them all, secure the course,” Ginyu: “If trouble meets us as we pass,” All: “We’ll shove our fists right up their ass!” Ginyu: “Ginyu Force, move out!”

Goddamn, I love Maximum the Hormone, and it makes me happy that Freeza does too.

Jeice: “Space Australia. Or more specifically Space Brisbane. Go Space Broncos!” I swear to god, this is my favorite line in the series, and I honestly couldn’t tell you why.

Gohan: “Any strategies?” Vegeta: “Throw dog treats at him.” Gohan: “How will that help?” Vegeta: “I’ll find it hilarious.”

Thank you Team Four Star for slipping in one of the best Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure references I’ve ever had the pleasure to witness. (ICYMI)
