I loved this concept of a Life Series - Crane Wives crossover ever since i first saw it, and wanted to do a little one myself! With my username being canary as well as being based off this song, i thought it’d make sense to do it first, if i do more!

I feel like Pearl would say this in a vengeful way, like she doesn’t regret what she’s done, but she is angry for what Scott’s done to her

Also maps to Scott letting her win, not in a literal ‘he’s not gonna live with it’ but like he doesn’t regret letting her win, and still respects her and thinks she deserves it

Lifers x Crane Wives

I saw someone comment on a life series TikTok or something to try and pair all of the lifers to a crane wives song, without repeating songs. so obviously I spent an hour doing it

Grian—Tongues & Teeth (self explanatory if you’ve EVER heard this song)

Scar—Steady, Steady (this whole song is about how their partner is walking out but they still want to be “wild and free” which is just SO Scar coded)

Tango—Ancient History (he keeps teaming up with Skizz and I feel like this song vibes with that, it also just feels very Tango)

Skizz—Icarus (this man always gives himself up for his teammates I swear, and he fuels them to keep going. It also says “oh brother, brother” which feels like Skizz talking to any of his teammates to me)

Impulse—Allies or Enemies (Impulse has been very iffy on a lot of his alliances throughout the seasons, especially in third life and with the amount of playing all sides that man has done this songs feels right)

Cleo—The Glacier House (this. this is literally just her leaving Fairy Fort. The song is talking to/about her from probably Lizzie’s perspective, but like the last line is 100% as if Cleo was speaking)

Bdubs—Unraveling (Bdubs relies so heavily on his teammates, and when he doesn’t have that stability *cough* Etho *cough* he just kinda doesn’t know what to do so this song fits)

Mumbo—Keep You Safe (this man is by no means an aggressive/reckless player [see: Joel or Martyn] and he feels like he’s just here for the vibes and honestly? Love that for him. This song is about fear not keeping you safe and watching your friends run high risks, which just is very accurate to how Mumbo plays this series. I also feel like he could fit Rockslide when he goes red cause he goes from standstill to “drop dead sprint” in terms of aggression)

Lizzie—Shallow River/New Colors (Lizzie is the only one I put as two because both of these songs are just so fitting. Shallow river—“wasted all for the title, wasted all for the crown” reminds me of Lizzie trying to kill Scott and ending up dying herself instead. I also feel like parts of it could be dead Lizzie talking to Joel, the only person who is really mourning her. New Colors—“don't tell me that I can't, I need this“ and “I give up my air, to breathe” also feel very accurate with how she is trying so hard and just keeps failing )

Jimmy—Canary in a Coal Mine (no further context needed, we all know Timmy)

Scott—Little Soldiers (this is very flower husbands, but also just feels like Scott looking back on the last seasons including Pearl, Jimmy, Martyn, all his reluctant exes. Also this man is the watchers’ like least favorite person ever and this gives that vibe)

Pearl—Ribs (i changed this from New Discovery because Ribs is entirely about somewhat angrily protecting and helping yourself because nobody else would, and it really strikes me as Pearl with the some things having been good (Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss) and some being bad (divorce quartet))

BigB—Not the Ghost (this man is so incredibly odd, he just constantly feels like he is being haunted by the watchers and just going about his life, he is the human personification of gaslight and we love that for him)

Martyn—The Hand That Feeds (he HATES the watchers with every ounce of his being, and with Ren gone I think this guy’s only purpose is just to spite them)

Joel—Sleeping Giants (go listen to it. That’s all there is to it, it just feels very Joel-ish, this lad is absolutely fucking mental)

Ren—Once & for All (this song feels like war and being betrayed, and Ren has been betrayed so much so it just fits. I mean come on “my blood’s forever on your hands” tell me that isn’t 100% something Ren would say)

Gem—Show Your Fangs (Girlboss moment, we love Geminislay. This woman is not someone to be underestimated and this song very clearly says that so it’s very Gem in my head. She doesn’t have enough lore yet to make it angsty but ONE DAY)

Etho—Never Love An Anchor (I can’t explain it, this song just has Etho vibes. I mean “It’s a secret I keep tucked inside my chest” just seems very him, I can’t really tell you why)

(Drums: Impulse)

(This is a project I made for Crane Wives x Life Series. Scott basically enjoys singing here and plans to do a project to sing every song by the Crane Wives. All lyrics belong to Crane Wives, and I own the fanfic.)

Scott was carving a new guitar for Pearl when Impulse barged in.

“Dude, what song is that? That was wicked!” He said excitedly. Pearl, who was sulking in the corner, rolled her eyeballs and snickered. Scott and Impulse glared at her. “It’s called Tongues and Teeth. Thought it would be the perfect one for them.” Scott said, sanding the corner and edges of the guitar.

“I do know how to play the drums.” Impulse said, watching as Scott tune the guitar properly and fiddle with the strings. “You do?” Pearl asked, suddenly appearing behind Impulse. “Oh, yeah. You have any songs about that? That I think I can play to, I mean.” He said. Pearl didn’t say anything for a moment, then said, “I think I have one. One second. You gotta listen to it first. Crane Wives’s songs are real hard.” She said, bounding over to her corner. She handed Impulse a pair of headphones and handed her an iPod.

“Since when did you have an iPod? I though those were all way too old.” Scott said when he noticed it. Pearl giggled sheepishly and watched as Impulse began mock-playing the drums. Scott handed Pearl her newly made guitar and growled, “Break it again and you’re gonna have to buy a new one yourself.”

Pearl looked at the guitar, nodded, then walked over to put it down. Then she went over to her pillow, stared at it for a while then attacked it and reduced it to shreds. Scott winced then saw Impulse give her a thumbs up. She stormed over again, grabbed his shoulders then shook him, saying stuff like, “How was it?” “You think you can play it?” “Do you like it?” Impulse looked shell-shocked, cleared up then said, “Yeah, I think so.”

Pearl went hyper and squealed. Scott sighed, then asked, “Which one?” Pearl abruptly jerked her head around then said, “Metaphor. We’re gonna prank Scar with that one.”

Scott let out a slight smile when he heard that. “Sure. Impulse, get the drums ready. I’ll get the idiot couple.”

Scott had set Scar and Grian down on two bean bags. Skizz and Bdubs had noticed all their equipment (mainly Impulse’s drums) and had gotten their own bean bags as well. Cleo, who upon noticing Pearl with her new guitar (she spray-painted Tilly on it), had called anyone nearby to watch.

Scott cleared his throat. He gave Pearl a nudge to signal her and Impulse, and they began. Impulse fired up his drum, and Scott began gently singing the first verses. “Uh-uh-uh-uhh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh-uhh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh-uhh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh-uhh-uh-uh~” Pearl began strumming out at the guitar. She knew they also needed an electric guitar, but she just settled on using her normal one (yes, she has an electric one).

“I've gotten good at leaning on metaphors,” Scott sung, while eyeing Scar. “I've gotten good at living on someone else's page. I cut my teeth on second-hand sentiments, you can't trust a single thing I say.” Impulse kept up perfectly, like he’d practised before. Scott noticed Grian hide a smile from Scar.

“Uh-uh-uh-uhh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh-uhh-uh-uhh.” Pearl sung while going at the guitar. “I keep my closet free of skeletons, 'cause I'm much better at digging graves. But I always dig up bones in your sympathy, I can't trust a single thing you say.” She then swiped a glance at Scott, and they both continued on, singing together. Impulse hid his sniggers and kept going. “Uh-uh-uh-uhh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh-uhh-uh-uh.”

Scar casted confused glances at the three, but they took no notice. Martyn, in the audience, clapped his hand over his mouth and shook violently, while Skizz glared at him.

“Don't look too hard 'cause you won't like the scars he left in me~” Scott fingered his jacket, like he does when he’s nervous. “~~~” Pearl did her best to mimic the louder voices on the track.

“I've gotten good at making up metaphors. I've gotten good at stretching the truth out of shape,” Pearl sung, not giving notice of Cleo, Grian and Martyn letting out fits of silent laughter while Scar watched, way confused than before.

“And all these words are sweet and meaningless. You can't trust a single thing I say.” Scott smiled, knowing that his friends below finally understood the song’s meaning. He knew it wasn’t his, it never was, but being able to preform it, to sing it was a really good experience, and he would keep going. “Uh-uh-uh-uhh-uh-uh~”

“You can't trust a single thing I say (“uh-uh-uh-uhh-uh-uh”),” Pearl sang while Scott played the background sound. “You can't trust a single thing I say (“I've gotten good at leaning on metaphors”). You can't trust a single thing I say (“I've gotten good at making up metaphors”)~”

By the time Impulse and Pearl finished, almost everyone except for Joel, Ren and Lizzie were there, applauding. Skizz let out a whistle while the three who were holding it in the whole time burst out laughing so hard. Grian actually fell over.

“Yeaaaahhh!” Pearl whooped, then hi-fived Impulse. Scott sighed with relief while Scar began questioning Grian and Martyn about what they were laughing at. They didn’t seem to give it in and were both sniggering. Scar finally slapped Grian and it ended up as a fistfight between Scar and winged Grian.

As Scott helped Pearl and Impulse put the his drums back in his room, Scott felt joy surging through him. They could play all of the Crane Wives songs, after all, with Impulse. This would be a massive project, but at least his friends are content with it.

Opinions on characters: Kiryuu Nanami, Saionji Kyouichi, Tatsuki Shiori

Thank you for the ask! Im guessing its for the ask game(the general opinion is included so yeah) Sorry i didnt answer until now😅

Kiryuu Nanami

General opinion: She is everything to me. Her mere existance confirme half of my theories about Anthy and Akio.

She is a queen. She didnt deserve this.

The reason she isnt in the movie is because she realised the truth about Ohtori in time and when things started to go back to their bad nature she was able to leave.

She is the perfect first character to find out about Akio's abuse because she lived with one of his victims, he ruined her life in-directly and was about to make her another one of his victims. Her character and story are perfect, i would change nothing about her.

(i have a big post about her, Anthy and Shadow Girls to write so stay tuned for that)

A ship i love: i cant decide if i like the idea that Nanami is aromantic or a lesbian(so probably both) and i dont have a ship with her i realy love. I like Nanami x Kozue a bit, mostly for the parrallels, but i have my own problems with Kozue(which is its own topic), so im not sure how much i actualy ship it. But then again, most of my Rgu Ships go under "after 15 years of therapy they can actualy date", so... Who know.

A non-romantic relationship i love: her friendship with Utena and Anthy and her friendship with Saionji. I wish she got a chance to apologize to Anthy once they were both in a good place and far away from their brothers. For Saionji, i hope they got to meet after he left Ohtori with Juri and Miki. If he grew as a person(which is necessery for escapong Ohtori) he would be a great big brother. Also, the egg episode realy sells me the idea he is her brother figure. "No appreciation for brotherly advice".

A NOTP: Nanami x Touga and Nanami x Akio(OBVIOUSLY). I havent seen anyone ship it and GOOD. That is a one way ticket to hell. I Also dont like Nanami x Saionji, but thats mostly personal opinion cuz i see them as siblings. Might Also be the age gap but idk.

My biggest headcanon about them: as i said, SHE LEFT THE OHTORI NOT LONG AFTER THE SERIES FINALE! She is also an animal person but is not used to them because of her family(cats trigger he trauma too). Once she and Anthy make up, BECAUSE THEY WILL, Anthy lets her spend time with her animal friends, maybe even helps her adopt an animal of her own.

An idea for fanfiction: Nanami meeting with everyone from Ohtori after they escape, exploring their relationships once they arent under control of their abusers.

(this one is in my WIPs, i Just have to finish it) Weed bride. Anthy and Nanami smoke blunts together along with everyone else. They Also take over Ohtori. I dont wanna spoil anything.

Something that makes me think of them:

Songs "Oh no!" and "Family jewels" by Marina and the diamonds, "allies or Enemies"(about her and Touga) and "Take me to War" by crane wives. And a few more but this is on the top of my mind.

Kyouichi Saionji

General opinion: He was the perfect first antagonists for the series. He is so pathetic, no one takes him seriusly, which is a perfect foil to Akio being adored and trusted by many characters.

He most likely isn pure evil as he is still a child, but he should defenetly be taken responsible for his actions(abuse of Anthy).

A ship i love: touga x Saionji but ONLY AFTER 20, NO, 40 YEARS OF THERAPY! They both hurt each other, they should solve their problems. I wish we saw Saionji's Thoughts about Touga in the movie, but hey, we cant have everything.

A non-romantic relationship that i love: as i said, he would make a great brother to Nanami. As i doubt either of them will ever see Touga again, they could help each other with the trauma. Saionji defenetly has family problems, everyone does in Ohtori.

I also like his friendship with Wakaba, i dont ship them tbh. I feel like she can put him in his place with ease(she beat Utena up as a petty joke).

Not realy a positive relationship, but his rivalry with Utena is very intresting. He is like a trashy version of her. Their straight love intrests are each other's real crushes, but they project. This would all be solved if the world wasnt homophobic. I want them to fight, middle-school-girl style cuz Saionji would get his ass handed to him.

A NOTP: saionji x Akio (OBVIOUSLY) and Saionji x Nanami (again, its just my personal preference)

My biggest headcanon about them: he projected Touga onto Anthy. Thats what kinda stings about how he treated her. Its obvious that relationship was going nowhere, but he never even liked her for her and so it was Just cruel.

He feels as if he isnt good enough for people around him and was at some point jealous about Touga's relationship with Akio cuz it seemed like Touga was so much more mature that he was getting attention of another adult.(angsty i know, but its based on reality)

A fanfic idea: him and Nanami meeting again(as you can see, im very normal a out them)

Maybe an AU where he and Touga dont go so off the edge ti become the pricks they are in the canon and instead Run away with Nanami and live as a little family(THIS SHOW HURT ME, OKAY)

In weed bride, Anthy wrecks his shit cuz he was with Touga and she was about to end Touga so obviously he will get some too. (that fic is Just pure crack)

Tatsuki Shiori

Something that Reminds me of them: tbh i cant think of anything right now.

General opinion: gurlfailiure. I love her. Just another child in a cruel world. She only had the worst adults to look up to and so she hurt the Ones she loved the most. She has room to grow and redeemed herself, she is only a child after all.

I think her place in the movie was great because of that. (i think her role was methaphore for what happend after the series finale, Just like with everyone else)

A ship that i love: i like Juri x Shiori and kinda Shiori x Kozue(both girls are disasters) but i wouldnt say i love either of those. Again, years of therapy, then they can get bitches.

A non-romantic relationship i love: not sure

Maybe her relationship with Touga cuz i dont see it as a real romance. I like it for the narrative(its not realy healthy) and how we found out a lot about Touga trough it.

I think her relationship with Ruka was a perfect example of an older guy messing with a younger girl. Toxic and cruel.

A NOTP: Shiori x Akio (look i have to make sure its known i do not unde any circumstances support these Ships) and Shiori x Ruka(he is an abusive asshole. A mini Akio, if you will)

My biggest headcanon about them: she is queer and full of internalised homophobia. She loved Juri but she is Just another pawn in Akio's game and so she could do nothing but hurt her. I dont think they made up after the end of the movie, im not even sure Shiori escaped, so idk if they even met after.

She liked Touga less because he is a prince and more because he is like a rose bride(like her, in a way) but is not a girl so its fiiine(side eye).

A fanfic idea: i dont have any right now

Maybe exploring her movie role and/or her mindset trough a fanfic?

D'arce so easily fell for Le'garde's words. For his speeches of honor and holy words of Knights of the Midnight Sun. She hated Rondon, what it represented, how it abused and hurt. He connected to her in a way none other did before, so down to Earth. So she fell, she fell headfirst for him. This was love, wasn't it? His voice was so strong, so lovely, and when it told her that he was proud, god did she feel loved. When it ridiculed her, told her that it was disappointed, she felt like nothing. She was nothing in those moments.

Sometimes D'arce got lost in her own mind. Sometimes she'd be so obsessed with being enough for Le'garde that she'd become unsure of her own actions. Was she enough? Was she worthy to be near Le'garde? He was perfect in every single way. D'arce was broken. Fucked up. Intrinsically wrong. She was a nobody and she would only infect Le'garde. At night, he'd tell her that she was perfect. Though, sometimes D'arce felt like her actions were what he loved. Not her.

Growing up a knight, she only heard criticisms. Her stance was wrong. Her posture was wrong. D'arce was weak. Not strong enough. How could a girl be a knight like this?! Le'garde, on the other hand, told her she was doing so well. No one's done that before. Maybe that's why she was so devoted.

It's not like she had anywhere to go, anyways. Her life revolved around Le'garde at this point. He was her life. Without him, D'arce was nothing. He was her king and she was his knight. She'd protect him, even if that meant spilling her own blood, right? That's what you do if you're in love, or so she was told. Till death do us part. Le'garde would never die for her... but that's fine. Right? A knight was meant to die.

Sometimes she thought about leaving though. On those nights where he showed her no love. Sometimes she packed her things and almost left him behind, though memories of him "loving" her eclipsed those feelings of negativity and she went back to crawl at his side. To grovel and scream and beg for his attention.

She was an ungrateful piece of shit. Le'garde showed someone so pathetic so much love and care, those harsh words meant nothing. She wasn't grateful enough for him. The fact he even spoke to her showed his kindness. He was perfect. He was perfect and she was horrible and he gave her attention and touched her and she infected him like a selfish monster. It hurt him far more to be around her. Her feelings meant nothing. She would serve and protect. She would die for him. At least that way she could be useful. D'arce was nothing without him. A nobody.

Maybe that's why she so easily stepped into the dungeons to save him. What was D'arce without her Le'garde?

Right. So. Doing the thing. I’m just gonna make a bunch of posts dissecting each song & which character(s)/dynamics it fits- if you don’t want to see it, block [#kw crane wives x life series ], probably the only tag I’m gonna use for each of the posts (I won’t take it personal if you block it lol I swear)

Probably won’t do all of the songs, I’ll do quite a few though

There’s some (the moon will sing, canary in a coal mine, the moon will sing) that I think have really been all over fandom for so long that there’s honestly not much for me to add? If I think of other characters than what they’re typically assigned to I might do something, or if I have a really good idea, but don’t expect those ones to appear^^’

Your miguel o'hara fiction had me sobbing 🥺🥺 it gives me the vibes of "never love love and anchor" by the crane wives, and at least in my interpretation of it, is about a parent/loved one unable to love a child like they deserve.

Also, about the whole "character x character"- I've never personally seen it as inherently romantic??? I've been reading fanfiction for a little over half my life and haven't seen this type of issue brought up. I've read it as a characters relationship in relation to another character. So while it may be usually romantic it sometimes isn't, I've read both romantic and platonic with the "character x character" tag on it this whole time. And at least usually the little "[related]!" Thing in the begin of a set characters name doesn't lead to a romantic fic, and if it does people usually give trigger warnings beforehand of !nc€st. I don't even really know what else you'd be able to tag it as an alternative 🤔, most people just do "character x character" when they're searching for fics anyway, changing how it's presented may make it go virtually unseen to people who don't follow you. That's my personal opinion, I don't see any real harm in it, besides your descriptions also help in clearing up this issue usually by context. Anyway sorry for ranting, love you, bye-bye lol ❤️❤️❤️

regarding the said issue, i think the same way too ;(( i’ve been writing since april and have already posted two series that revolves around family troupes and this is the first time i’ve heard about it. honestly, i’m just hopeful that i haven’t made anyone uncomfortable in any way. thank you for this, anon! i appreciate the insight.
