Song Of The Day - Feb 9th '23
The Wind Cries Mary - Jimi Hendrix
I don't believe in a greatest anything of all time, but if forced to give an answer, I will always say Jimi Hendrix is the greatest guitarist of all time. He did things with a guitar that no one else ever will. His first album with his band The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Are You Experienced? is an album I think everyone should listen to. My favorite song on this album, and possibly my favorite Hendrix song is The Wind Cries Mary. I feel a connection to this song for multiple reasons. If there was one song I'd use to describe myself, it would be this song.
Hendrix is known for his explosive guitar skills (Just look at his performance of The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock), but The Wind Cries Mary takes a different approach. It's a gentle, almost jazzy song. As much as Jimi could draw poetry out of his guitar, the real poetry of this song is the lyrics. They flow with the guitar and bass to create a peaceful, late spring breeze of a song. The song is about reconciliation, with the name Mary echoing through the wind just like it echoes in Jimi's heart. The way he sings "and the wind whispers/screams/cries Mary" at the end of each stanza elicits chills from me. This song is a calm, cool, introspective look at love and the aftermath of a potentially relationship ending argument.
When I listen to The Wind Cries Mary, I have a specific image in mind. It's an old hand drawn animation, the kind that's low budget and rough.I imagine a woman in a long white dress, standing in a field of golden wheat in the dying light of dusk. Her hair is long, a deep reddish brown. Her skin is olive. She looks at you with piercing eyes as the wind blows her hair all around her. I wish I had the skill to draw it, but alas it's just a figment of my imagination.

A broom is drearily sweeping
up the broken pieces of yesterday's life
somewhere a Queen is weeping
somewhere a King has no wife.
And the wind it cries Mary.

little snippet for my marylene oneshot:
Marlene's continuous absence is spread over everything she has ever touched, even the things she never reached for, like the sky spreading its blanket on everyone. It should be a comforting thought, that she's up there somewhere, looking over Mary. Instead, Mary finds, it's taunting and tormenting her. It's nothing more than the idea of a morbid longing, it's a fatal flaw, and it's laughing at her like she's a fool. But Marlene is gone, and Mary knows that. Marlene is gone and that's all it is. There's nothing more to it than the fact that she's no longer under Mary's reach, and Mary can't seem to find the spark of hope in her that she needs to live on. The faintest flicker of faith that makes her see Marlene in the oak tree next to her house, or hear her in the way the wind rustles at night, or feel her presence lingering above her in the sky, like a constant echo of what once was, it's not to be found. She reaches for it, stretches her fingers all the way inside her to pull out that string of hope, that spark of love for Marlene she needs, but she finds that she's an empty shell, and that nothing is there. She's vacant and deserted without Marlene.
And so, the tune sings along. Marlene is gone, and all hope is lost.
