the fact that jess shakes his head in disappointment while knowing it’s the same girl that missed her mother graduation to see him in his hometown is insane to me. logan told her to do something stupid, something fun, something bad for her, but we are talking about the girl that went to nyc by herself to see a guy and she wasn’t even sure he’d be there!!! jess knows it, he knows her.

NO YOU'RE SO RIGHT!!! Like, here Logan is, giving her this speech about being brave and doing scary things or whatever, when he doesn't even know her. She jumped on a bus to New York to see a boy with absolutely zero plan, she chose a different school than she'd planned her whole life, she was student body vice president even though she really didn't want to be, never backed down from whatever challenge Paris threw at her at the Chilton paper (parking lot paving? And interviewing her mom's ex fiancé?? I mean come on, that was NOT easy), she navigated an incredibly challenging extended family (I mean, her mom and grandparents constantly fight and still Rory managed to have a relationship with everyone, and her dad who was mostly absent from her life has another daughter and still Rory was there for the kid's birth), and those are just the things I can think of off the top of my head. She's done so much that Logan doesn't know about because he never cared enough to ask but somehow in one conversation has her questioning everything about herself.

Meanwhile Jess knows just how very Not Rory the girl in front of him is just by taking one look at her. Knows she is lost and confused and scared after one conversation. He's the only one she has ever let her guard down around, felt safe enough to be truly herself, because he never tried to change her. And because of that, he knows her.

I think Rory would post about current events/global issues (you know those posts that are like WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS!!! she reblogs them before anyone adds “WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS!!”) she’d also reblog those like 30 note gifsets from fandomless and obscure old movies and would post very thorough, article-level book reviews. Jess would be one of those users who occasionally adds needlessly hostile and pretentious arguments to viral posts (he’s usually right, but his tone!) that make you go “who does this guy think he is?” and then you go to the blog and his bio is just like “Jess / NY” (even if he’s in Stars Hollow, CT) and all of his posts are like old band photos, moody excerpts from authors’ letters, and the occasional faceless personal photo — all captionless and tagless. They both liveblog the books they read but you’d never know on Jess’s end because he refuses to use tags (all of his lit opinions have the energy of a vague post) and gets 0 notes. One time Rory sees a post perpetuating a historical myth about a late author and lightly corrects the op and Jess jumps in (he’s agreeing with her, but his TONE!), she HAS to see who this guy thinks he is, and ends in stumbling on his 0 note liveblogging (okay he can be a little funny). She dms him about one of his opinions and from then on they’re talking daily, trying to beat each other’s yearly reading goals, and editing each other’s NaNoWriMo projects.

Do you ever think of how in s6 when rory lived at her grandparents she never actually read she only went out with logan & his friends and the second that jess comes by and give her the subsect she actually start to read it? but also. how probably most if not all of her books are with his notes in the margins?

I actually never noticed that before but looking back on Season 6 I'm shocked that Rory never actually read until Jess gave her the book. Jess, in my opinion, was always the one that she could rely on for the truth and that could have changed her view on the Yale issue. He never really lied to her (I'm not counting the swan story because I'd be embarrassed by that as well) and he also went out of his way to find her. And I love the idea of all of her books having his notes in the margins. I'm now thinking of Rory, post-Jess leaving in Season 3, wanting to read her favourite books and either: not reading them due to Jess' notes in the margins; reading them because of Jess' notes in the margins or reading them and attempting to ignore the notes.

i have a very weird question that i would love to hear your take on. in a au where lorelai & chris got married and died in a car crash, what made emily & richard to raise rory as their own daughter, what her relationship with jess would be like? and mostly with her grandparents?

Ooh, that's interesting.

So in this au, you would have to take into count that Rory would have been raised by Lorelai and Chris (not sure if we're talking about them dying when she's a baby or when she's like 10 or something) and I think that in itself would change Rory a lot. Not having Chris in her life was a big thing for Rory growing up, and unknowingly shaped her and her views on relationships a lot.

I'm not sure in what way being raised by Emily and Richard would affect Rory (obv it would I just don't think it would mean that she'd become all mean and spoiled but then what?) I feel like in this au she wouldn't feel the pressure to make up for "ruining Lorelai's future" but obviously with her parents dead (I'm going off the assumption that Rory knows that she's their grandaughter for now) she would feel a kind of pressure to live up to their memory (and she'd probably blame herself to some degree for their death bc this is Rory we're talking about)

Now there are two options 1: Rory tries so badly to live up to Lorelai that she starts to become her (as we know in canon Richard and Emily both saw Rory as the daughter they never had who they wished Lorelai was and Rory being the people pleaser that she is would 100% let them) but becoming Lorelai means realizing that the life that her parents planned for her isn't what she wants and then comes rebelling against them (honestly rebelling doesn't sound like teenage Rory that much but teens with dead parents are known for doing just that so I think it works) and what rhymes with rebelling better than getting a bf your parents hates and that's where Jess could come in now in this au I have no idea how they could meet seeing as obviously Rory would be living in Hartford but idk maybe she wants to visit the cute town close to home or something or they meet at a concert? I'm not sure that's up to you!

Now I have two ideas for what way they could get together either it's love at first sight and all that cute shit (boring but cute) bc without her bond with Lorelai her and Jess's relationship probably would've happened quicker OR (and that's the one I like more) they meet become friends and fake date Rory itches a plan that she knows will make Emily and Richard mad aka date the cute guy that is everything that they hate. (honestly, this is just bc they're aren't enough fake dating lit au's)

Now option 2: Rory stays in the perfect daughter role (and is slowly having a nervous breakdown but hey what's new?) she's probably dating someone handpicked by Emily a Chris2.0 if you will (so basically Logan) and is wildly unhappy but again she's a people pleaser so she'd never say. in this version, I think Rory would be a little less aware of her privilege and when she meets Jess she would probably come off as some spoiled little rich girl and after spending so much with Emily she would probably be judgemental of him too (and the meet ugly ensues) and slowly but surely they would realize that they're not so different become friends fall in love and all that!

Now seeing as this Rory would be at her peek people pleaser attitude it would be even harder to break up with her bf and to go against her mother's opinion (and as we know if there is anyone that dislikes Jess more than Lorelai it's Emily) but in this case, surprisingly I think Richard would be of great help while also having ridiculously high expectations of Rory he always had a soft spot for her and I think after losing his daughter that soft spot would only grow and seeing her miserable he would try his best to help her in changing Emily's mind! (plus I always thought that Richard would have loved Jess now granted when I think that I'm talking s6 Jess and not before but still!)

ok now on to just her relationship with Richard and Emily so far I've been going off the assumption that she knew who her real parents were but if she doesn't that obv had on a new layer to it does she even know about Lorelai's existence (does she see her as some big sister that she never got to know and nobody dares to talk about) or does she not even know that? I think her relationship with both would still be pretty similar to the one in the first situation just maybe without her giving herself the same crazy amount of pressure to be just like Lorelai. Emily would probably try her best to be more relaxed (without much success but still) I definitely think that if Lorelai died that young both Emily and Richard would feel guilty for it somehow and this would result in them sheltering Rory as best as they could (which is obviously not the way to raise a kid) which would result in her being very non-self-aware and well sheltered.

I'm gonna stop the post here but I honestly still have so many thoughts about this so just tell me if you want more bc I gladly will<3

rich girl society rory meets jess is my favorite au actually and i am not ashamed to admit it

it’s a very cute idea yeas. Rich Girl society rory would be even more complex and inscrutable than she is on the show 1000x more repressed/neurotic with a new kind of prissiness. like rory bless her soul is already incredibly pressured by not wanting to let her family down and thinking she has to make up for the crime of being born. would be even worse being raised rich. and raised around emily and richard at their most unapologetic game playing talk masters. in the sense that everything means something else and everything is a piece on a chess board. her and jess would meet in yale i’m assuming and they “hate” each other at first but eventually become friends and they are incredibly annoying together. the smart little terrible assholes. rory buys jess a sweet ass car bc she thinks expensive gift giving is how everyone expresses love and not just weird rich people. and jess looks at it and scratches his head. I already have a car. and she side-eyes that piece of junk he’s been lugging around since he was sixteen that barely even runs anymore and she thinks about blowing it up in her mind. Well they’d be something like this.

i just feel like my opinion over the fight is really unpopular because unlike other people who hates rory (for some unknown reason 😕), i think it was lorelai’s fault all along that it went down the way it went.

like i get why lorelai felt betrayed by her parents because they literally stab her in the back but it has nothing to do with rory. your daughter has to go to court and you just don’t show up because your mad? that’s your daughter! don’t have anything with emily & richard but don’t punish rory through them! her not telling rory about her engagement to luke, bringing all of rory’s stuff in the middle of the night and telling her parents that she’s out of the picture now because they won? you can not agree with their way, but your daughter needs her mom. like lorelai, beside being her mom, was also her best friend in the entire world. they talked and shared everything with each other.

cutting rory off like that and being all mad and bitter about it / commenting about it to rory like “did grandma changed your address?” // being mad at luke for telling rory about the engagement? showing up to rorys birthday party seeing everyone being happy surrounding her and staying outside of it? like fine. you are mad. you are hurt. but that’s your kid! YOUR KID and she needs her mom.

like you can be mad at her for dropping out of yale, but at least don’t cut her off like that. i’m still so pissed because rory did nothing to deserve this treatment from lorelai. yeah, she stole a yacht, she did a mistake, be there for her. don’t cut her off like that.

and when rory is moving in with logan and asking for Lorelai’s opinion lorelai is like “are you sure you don’t want to make sure the pool house is free first?” EXCUSE ME WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK

i swear i love lorelai but if my mom would’ve getting engaged and not telling me about it…. it would’ve become my villain origin story.

yeah I find it annoying how it's often put totally on rory like she was falling apart that's when she needs support more than ever? especially since lorelai was willing to forgive rory for stealing the boat and it was only her taking time off from yale that was seen as some unforgivable mistake instead of just a sign that she's clearly struggling and feeling lost. the whole reason rory went to her grandparents was because lorelai wasn't being supportive and she needed some family to lean on

I get that lorelai's shocked and disappointed and obviously hurt by how her parents act so like a couple of episodes of them falling out would've made sense, but after that I wish she would've just been like "this isn't what I wanted from you but what can I do to be there for you anyway"

the scene where rory finds out about the engagement is so sad 😭 especially compared to how excited they were together in s1 when lorelai got engaged to max, this should've been like that excitement x1000 since rory loves luke so much (and then it doesn't help that once they finally make up lorelai and luke start falling apart like we were truly robbed 😭)

i really love the idea of rory's cooking because the show always plays with their name both being lorelai (as in 2.06 introduce lorelai gilmore and in 6.01 new and improved lorelai) and the truth is... rory isn't her mother. she might be named after her the show love to play with their name like that but rory learning to cook is make so much sense. we even saw bits of it in s6 & s7 - offering to make logan's a sandwich, making herself omelette for breakfast... of course it would come more natural for her because she took the time she didn't speak with lorelai to learn a new skill she never had a chance to learn while living with her mother. i just love the idea of rory in the kitchen humming making food for herself being proud of what she made.

yes yes yes yes yes!!! like it's a point that's made over and over again throughout the show: Rory is her own person. Her and her mom share a name and a lot of interests, but they are different people. And that's something Lorelai seems to struggle with sometimes. Rory has opinions and interests that don't reflect her own and that almost freaks Lorelai out a bit. Which is why she's so shocked to see Rory being competent in the kitchen in A Vineyard Valentine. Rory has an entire life outside of Lorelai and it's kind of a foreign concept to her, but I absolutely love it for Rory. I love seeing her develop into her own person!! I love her finding skills and hobbies that are separate from her mom!! cooking is a fantastic creative outlet for Rory, and it actually ties into her relationship with Lorelai because of their shared love of food. It's like Rory took something that meant a lot to her from her childhood and brought it with her into adulthood in her own way. and I think that's kind of beautiful tbh.

hey! I think like most people I did not enjoy the fight, I can understand having them fall out as a plotline to explore but I wish it didn't go on for so long. (also as much as they both obviously did things wrong I have to say I'm more on rory's side, I think as a parent lorelai's job is to support her daughter who is clearly going through a hard time so I wish she didn't shut rory out so completely)

as for rogan I really liked this period for their relationship — I think it could've been a very lonely time for rory without him just consistently having her back and providing some fun lighthearted moments for her. I love the scene where she's insisting she's not going back to yale and he's like "I know you and I know you love school so you'll make your way back" because I think if he pushed her to go back and told her she was messing up her life she would've just ended it with him and been even more isolated from yale/people around her.
