The Rise of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee & Michael Dante DiMartino⁠ ★★★★★⁠ ⁠ Where has this book been all my life? (Please ignore the fact that it took me three years to read it). The Rise of Kyoshi is everything that fans could have hoped for, and I'd argue a lot more.⁠ ⁠ This is the origin story of Kyoshi. Obviously, we all know a bit of how her story ends, at least in terms of where her fame ended up. What we didn't know was how she got to that point or what grounded her, leading her to become such a warrior for justice. The Rise of Kyoshi gives readers a better idea of that and much more.⁠ ⁠ Best of all? It's sapphic. I did NOT realize that going in, but I adore this. The romantic subplot in The Rise of Kyoshi is so perfect and endearing. It's nice knowing there was something so sweet in Kyoshi's life. So I'm going to repeat it: Rangi is perfect, and I hope to see her in The Shadow of Kyoshi.⁠ ⁠ So, I already knew a bit of Kyoshi's backstory (I think primarily due to spoilers?), but I was certainly unaware of the depth of it all. It made my heart hurt, but I've got to admit that it is the making of a powerful origin story. I can't wait to see what happens next. Thankfully I have The Shadow of Kyoshi sitting right next to me, so you can guess what I'll be doing tonight.⁠

just finished reading the rise of kyoshii and MANNN IT WAS SO GOOD?! Kyoshi the baddest avatar fr her relationship w rangi has me on a chokeholddd ><

Felt a dozen emotions I never anticipated, there are times when I would physically feel my heart ache as I read through Kyoshi’s past. She’s just so preciousss 😞

I learned sm from this book and especially loved Lao Ge’s lines.

also the avatar state scenes? MWA CHEFS KISS.

Took me like the span of a month or so to finish it because ADHD lol but when I got through that first half, I could never put it down.

10/10 haha this is my kind of book.

Kyoshi collapsed facedown outside her tent. Her forehead lay on the ice. It felt good, cooling. The encounter had sapped her of energy, left her unable to take the last few steps to her bunk. So close, and yet so far. She didn't know what had come over her. What she'd done was so stupid it boggled the mind. If word got back to Jianzhu somehow… A bright light appeared over her head. She twisted her neck upward to see Rangi holding up a self-generated torch. A small flame danced above her long fingers. Rangi looked down at her and then at the liquor gourd still in her hand. She sniffed the night air. »Kyoshi, have you been drinking?« It seemed easier to lie. »Yes?«
