(the og gifset) I don't have the og file so this colouring is a lil diff

alright, I'll actually reveal my secret to how I make driver's lips so pink. so, class, gather round, today we're gonna learn how to from this.

tutorial under the cut!

firstly, the basic idea of how to make reds in skintones pop is to build up the green, it will neutralize the yellow and red that you see all over the face, that way when you do up the red it will only grab onto the most red parts of a person's face aka the lips!

LEVELS:

so ofc, as always, I start of with levels, as always, I use the top black pipet to grab the darkest part of the picture which most of the time is at the collar or under a cap.

then at the levels I play around a little with the red, green and blue not just RGB and especially with the red to make sure most of the red is neutralized in the face.

this is what the levels look like

for this gif its not to needed because the lighting is pretty neutral to begin with so I'm mostly using the levels to darken up the imagine and add to the contrast. I yellow up the face a little to make the red in his lips pink up. I will neutralize this later

VIBRANCE:

next thing I do is grab the vibrancy and up the vibrance to about 50+ and actually a little bit of the saturation to make the colours I already have a little bit extra

CURVES:

same as the levels, I grab the black pipet and choose the darkest part of the image to make sure the contrast is high, for curves I will also use some heavy playing around to sharpen the blacks and whites

dont worry the colours will later be neutralized

CHANNEL MIXER:

now this part is really different per gifset, here I'm gonna mostly be playing around with the blue to neutralize the colours even more and make the red pop a little more.

BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST:

because you lose the highlight points when you use channel mixer I'm gonna up the brightness to about +30

SELECTIVE COLOUR:

so this is the fun part, I'm not gonna share all the colours ofc cuz thats 10 pics ajkds, but the red and yellow is the most important here to neutralize the face and make his lips pop, also magenta is really important, the lips almost always have magenta in there so that layer will add even more contrast

here is what they look like

with a gif like this I'd personally recommend upping the blue, blue and red obviously stand in contrast to making the blue stronger with also make the red pop even more

also the white and black are important, white to make eyes pop and black to add contrast and play around further with whatever you think looks pretty

and yeah, sometimes I do another layer of selective colour to up the red and magenta to make the lips even stronger and the blues brighter which is in technique the same as the last explenation

and thats it! thats how I basic edit to make specifically someone's lips pop! this works the best with interviews bc they have the most neutral lighting, its hard to do this techique if you first have to fixx the colouring to get it to a basic neutral but its possible just a fuck ton of work.

buckle up folks this is gonna be long bc min. character limit uni papers thought me a lot of things but def not how to be concise 

01. planning

this was a long time ago but i do remember wanting to make something with overlays bc quite honestly i started working on this way too late and it seemed the fastest lmao. jokes on me i had 2 failed attempts and this also went through some changes along the way. initially i wanted to combine dye, bol and present:you... them being my fave eras for this lovable dumb man. so it would’ve been one pair for each gif.

02. creating

picking footage

so onto creating,, first things first the concept had to be changed bc present:you only had light shots so that had to be removed rip, here you can see a failed attempt at me trying to include it. this was before i started making proof on concepts for gifsets which later on saved me so much time... but not this time

once i accepted defeat i had to reshuffle the shots and add some new ones but it was all good i was not losing braincells at all. so onto the real gifs, gonna show you the red one bc that’s my fave of the three. 

making the base

btw i’m always working with timelines and smart objects bc it feels way easier than frames. so here we started with this jaebeom, and since the background and his hair it’s pretty dark those will be the parts which will be covered with the next gif. i made it black and white and also adjusted the levels a bit to make it a bit softer (lowered the whites and lightened the blacks)

for aesthetic purposes i always go for one close shot and one wider shot, then literally all i did was add the other gif on top, and set it to lighten. okay this is it that’s the whole process bye. oh we need the rest too? okay okay. so btw for a while i was considering making both of them coloured but then bw looked better when having all three gifs under each other, felt more like a ‘set’

now for this gif in particular i did not need to mask anything, shocking, but for the others i had to either blend the edges or make the bottom layer darker at some places to let the top layer show up a bit more e.g. for the second gif i needed a tiny blending like so (it’s the layer 1 copy 3 lmao)

making the overlay bits

then we are basically done with the main part of the gifs, obviously i applied colouring to each inside the smart object. but i always like to add something extra on top which are usually two things: 1.) full overlay gif something blurred (literally any kind of footage.. i used leaves, water, space renders etc. so far), or a light leak, oooor a bokeh effect whatever and just keep it subtle. and 2.) some smaller moving bits which are usually sparkles, dust, stars, galaxy stuff etc. u get the idea. for the above gif this happens to be Layer 1 copy 2 rip. also in this case this overlay is actually this jaebeom footage blurred and with some colouring added on top of it to have this redish brassy tone (not me forgetting about this completely lmao) obviously it’s zoomed in and i’m using the top left part of the video blurred. look at me explaining my chosen gif with another gifs gahd i’m bad at this. anyways it just goes to show i use practially anything i can think of and just blur it. 

for the full overlay footage i either go black and white and set it to overlay or soft light, whatever works best, or go coloured and set it to lighten again.... whatever blending mode works best. for this specific 2nd gif i went with lighten. for the smaller moving bits same tbh i just adjust the levels/curves to only show the bits i need when it’s set to lighten, i.e. i make its background more black so it won’t make the gif hazy. 

 adding the text

so anyways i add those on top so it’s not boring anymore,, practically just concealing the fact that all i‘ve really done was adding a gif on top of another and set it to lighten rip. oh yeah we have the text layers, nothing fancy here: for the script i used Challenge and the serif is FogtwoNo5. For the script i sampled some red from the background and just set it to overlay, and for the serif i just went with full caps adding some extra kerning bc one: for full caps you always need that, not this much lol, and two: it just looks better okay. 

last touches

then i added a levels adjustment layer because i felt the gifs were a bit brighter than i wanted, so we ended up with this

oh my gahd we are almost theeeere, for saving gifs here are my settings, i did not have to tell photoshop which colours to use luckily so it was an easy process.

03. posting

eeehmmm posting... yeah nothing exciting? i just save it in my drafts check it on mobile, and if something is really messed up i’ll change some colouring and saving settings, but this was a fairly ‘easy’ gif for tumblr to compress decently so none of that.

1.- Who are you? Tissaia de Vries. Rectoress of Aretuza.

This isn't the first set I made for the show or for her, but I'm chosing to start with this one bc I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I really like the coloring for once and the shots that made it. I actually had trouble chosing the scenes bc I love how she looks in every single one lol

2.- #Tissaia planning murder

Another Tissaia set. I had the idea while choosing the caps for something else (it usually happens that way), the coloring looks a bit different to the rest bc I used a different file, but eh I like it.  Also it turned out to be a pretty popular gifset. I mean, fck Stregobor right?

3.- Yennefer x Tissaia first set

I love them and I just had to make something for them. There's actually a second set that I made that I see it like a sequel of sorts for this one bc once again I left too many good scenes out. I really how this one looks though, I had a blast making it. And it's also amusing to read the tags.

4.- Betty Gilpin Rewatches GLOW's Best Scenes

This is the last set I made for GLOW before it was canceled. I'm still not over it. I'll never be over it. Look how happy Betty looks. Fck you Netflix.

5.- Yennefer x Tissaia icons

I hadn't made icons in a while. Not a big batch anyway, sometimes I just make one for myself to use it here but that’s it. But a few people commented on my header and I was like hmmm, I could make icons instead. I love colorful stuff so I think these turned out ok.

um if there’s a trend... whitewashing SDKFFJ like it’s not so much a Trend as a byproduct of heavy psds? yeah. also i really like soft colors & lining so when it’s just. Harsh (this is mostly from my experience in the rpc) it’s ... yeah.

oh and flashing things?? especially on people’s themes / whatever where there’s not a warning?? i rly don’t have patience for that ;; and those edits where it’s like. it’s clear it’s not meant to be readable / consumed well & it just looks like a blur & u can’t tell what’s going on????

MY PET PEEVE. this hasn’t appeared in the op fandom (yet.. thank goodness) but in the bnha fandom adding a giant lip to characters they hc as black or even to be of color ..... like.. it looks ugly?? first of all bc it’s not done how it would Actually look & kinda just arbitrarily placed like “oh they have big lips look im inclusive :)” & it’s clear they’re just using stereotypes & not putting thought into it? (ex: giving east asians big lips too even though east asians tend to have thin lips????) and it’s just. Not Handled well. and the noses too they’re so often made to be. caricatures really. like when doing indian characters they’ll make it like a giant triangle or something and it’s .... it’s like they tried so hard to be inclusive that they looped around and just made it racist.

i don’t usually do gifs??? like i’ve done it one (1) time. um but with graphics.... it really depends. how complicated is it? is there background? how many charas? do i already have headcanons for what the chara looks like or am i figuring it out as i go along? mmm i’ve been trying to spend more time on my graphics recently so i can try to be more proud of them but? for a single character no background panel... 20 min? it really depends tho because most of mine i make during lectures in class,, meaning that i’m not 100% engaged with it or anything,, it’s more like i’m doodling but instead i’m. editing graphics.

And now the real reason I’m here: since posting this gifset of how terrifying the Six summons must be for Noct to experience (bc Noct/pain/anguish is my OT3), I have gotten asks about how I made the gifs and got the Astrals to appear in game so I could snag video. I have about eleven different ones in my inbox now so I figured I would just make a hopefully user-friendly post to consolidate things. Also wow, you guys, that is probably the most traffic I’ve ever gotten on a post you guys are great thank you 😊

I did kind of answer some of your questions awhile back in this post here, but sadly there is no good trick for getting the Astrals to appear. I really did just spend hours running around in one of my lower level saves letting everyone die until they showed up. Howevs, because I’ve seen it mentioned a lot in tags on that gifset that I shamelessly read all of, I do want to like go and ahead and HASHTAG#CONFIRM that Titan is by far the Rarest of them all and A Shy Boy. To put the level of Rarest of Them All I’m talking about into perspective, Leviathan - who can only be summoned near a body of water - showed up in the middle of the goddamn desert outside Hammerhead three times before I got Titan once. “But Ayla!” you ask, “HOW did you get him to appear?”

GOOD QUESTION. THE ANSWER: I WASTED HOURS OF MY ACTUAL REAL LIFE. Following in my footsteps is not suggested. To finally get his cantankerous ass to grace my poor boys with his presence I went to Formouth, let those level 80 walker things kill the bros, and then set the game to easy so carbuncle would revive Noct whenever he died, and let the level 80 things kill him over and over and over again while I worked from home one day until upon the rapid approach of Noct’s 74279084675486th death, the summon music started playing and lo and behold, a wild Titan appeared. So Noct had a really bad day and I still feel guilty about that, and the video that I got is actually pretty shitty, quality wise, but it is my precious and I feel like I should get a medal for it and several awards elsewise. It’s not even an actual accomplishment on my part and I am still filled with pride for my Titan vids. This game, man. Of course after I was done with him the prick immediately showed up again in the Vesperpool, of all places, so whatever, you thrice-damned pissbaby quake monster, I guess the high ground (and low ground, and all ground) is still yours. In my main save, which is over 400 hours, I still haven’t gotten the Titan summon, to which I say 🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻

Anyway! Yes I got vids, and it took a long time, and it probably wasn’t really worth it but since I did it please god use them, help validate their existence. If you really really want to get your own vids, the post I linked way up top is kind of a general rundown of how I went about baiting them all, but it’s really mostly luck. The only other thing I will mention is that you should always save before you summon one and then go reload once it happens, because there’s a wait period between one summon and another that varies and is annoying and makes only a modicum of sense like most of this ridiculous tire fire of a game that I inexplicably and passionately love to the depths of my soul. *Kanye shrug* 

(PRO FFXV-FISHING TIP: same rule applies for the carp pond. catch one, save, reload! It will cut your war with the carp by figurative years and literal hours).

buT ANYWAYS hgjsh under the cut is basically how i gif my live performances, i use

a mac

ps cc 17 (i think this will work on other versions ??? im not sure :( )

vlc player (i have version 2.2.2)

ts files of the performance (u need ts files otherwise the quality looks :/ even if it’s a 720p mp4 file,, also dont take performances from youtube u’ll end up w a walmart lookin gif when u want gucci gifs)

okay so first u need to get ts files of your performance and i get mine from _helloflora on twitter or from kpopexciting! since i … only ever gif mx i’m gonna be giffing mx again 4 this and i’ll be giffing shownu as an example from the 170507 performance of beautiful.

so first, load up ur ts file into vlc player and Basically what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna clip the video and get the part that we want !!! i would recommend starting a few seconds before the scene u actually want bc vlc is dumb like that …..

so get ur lil clip (mine is in the movies folder on my laptop bc … idk . it put it there and idk how 2 change it so i just keep it there)

make sure ur vlc is still open bc now u need to convert this little clip into an m4v file so ps can . load it … and basically what u do is u go into file > convert/stream or shift + cmd + s to open up the window. then drag ur clip into the window and on “choose profile” click customize and make sure ‘mp4/mov’ is selected. on the video codec tab, make sure u have ‘h.264′ selected then click apply and close the window and open it again just so u know it’s saved. then click ‘save as file’, save it where ever u want (i have a handy folder called ‘caps’ where i keep all my converted clips) and let it convert. the indicator that it’s converting is the play bar (streaming bar?? the bar)

^ that thing. so you let it convert (dont touch anything i learned this the hard way) and once it’s done, load it into ps! 

i use the video import way so just go to file > import > video files to layers and select your converted clip, then drag the arrows to the clip you want giffed. this part is mostly trial and error to get what you want but i would recommend taking your time with finding the start of the clip and the end of it, also don’t make the space in between ur arrows too big bc then u get too many layers and that for me really slows down my mac :(

(also i literally . broke my own rule abt layers bc i messed up my recording of the clip and i was too lazy 2 do it again but CONTINUING !!!) now u have ur clip opened in ps!! i usually use around 50-60 frames so it doesn’t exceed tumblr’s 3mb limit, but also it depends on the size of your gif. the bigger the gif, the less layers you want. i’m making this test gif 268 x 270px (which is my go to sizing for gifs that i want side by side)

now what you wanna do is go to the little 3 lined bar thing on the timeline

click that and select “select all frames”, then click the timing (the 0.03 numbers) and change it to 0.05! then while all your frames are still selected, click the 3 bar thing and select “flatten frames into layers”. you’ll get two sets of layers now, one titled with “layer 1″ and the other titled with “frame 1″. delete all the layers called “layers”

this is where i crop my gif !! my crop settings are at 268 x 280px, and once it’s cropped i go to image > canvas size and resize the height to 270px. then click the “convert to timeline mode” in the 3 bar menu or as the little icon next to the “forever” setting.

(my timing settings are still at 0,03 bc i was getting ahead of myself jahgkds) but ! u should have this 

now so what u wanna do is select all ur layers/frames (i’m gonna call them layers so we’re not confused w the frames in the timeline) and right click and convert them to smart object! now we’re gonna sharpen them, and i used sharpening actions from @k-psds! i would recommend downloading a couple and just experimenting with which one you like best!

once you’ve applied your action, here comes the coloring part!! i never use psds because each gif usually needs a different way of coloring, but i do have a basic process for performance gifs. i use curves, levels, a tiny bit of brightness (either going down or up depending on the performance) and selective coloring with black, neutral and sometimes red (and depending on the performance, i’ll look into using the other colors)

and that’s basically !!! how i gif performance videos !!!! it seems a little time consuming at first but the more you do it, the easier it becomes :D

SOME TIPS & TRICKS I LEARNED

when giffing performance videos, always go for close ups and clips where they’re not moving so much. it makes cropping so much easier and your gif doesn’t look as grainy

avoid flashing lights !!! it brings down the quality of the gif

use as little adjustment layers as u can! using so many makes the gif grainy (how many times have i said this) and you rly just wanna focus on making the gif bright enough 2 be pretty but not so bright u have idols looking like 2% milk

in selective coloring w the black tab, i usually bring it up to abt +15 or +10. idk why i do it tho someone told me in a tutorial and it’s been part of my process ever since.... makes the gif look nice tho so im not complaining

lastly !!! do a lot of messing around in photoshop !!! u might make a walmart looking gif but in no time ur gonna be making some nice Gucci gifs !!
