Sailor Moon Thoughts - i know i'm 10yrs late but Crystal's not that bad actually

so i recently got back into sailor moon

grew up on the english dub 90s anime (watch the jpn sub in 9th grade)

had only read the manga once in the past and that was in college; however i just recently bought the first 2 volumes of the collector's edition (just finished V2 actually!)

but this is my first time watching Crystal (mostly bc when it was first coming out there was so much backlash and hate and it made me turn away from it)

now that i've read volumes 1&2 and watched S1 i gotta say...when compared to the manga Crystal's honestly not that bad and i'd say overall pretty faithful

Spoilers for Sailor Moon Crystal!

Usagi and Mamoru

first thing's first! mamoru's age is fixed! fucking yay!

in both the manga and crystal he's a 16yr old 2nd year high school kid! not a 1st year college student dating at 14yr old little girl! he and usagi compliment each other and it really shows in crystal imo

90s-SM fleshes out this couple individually more in the first season and i'm in love with that and they have some really sweet moments and i still ship it ofc i do BUT the age difference got so iffy and squeakable for me when watching again as a grown ass adult!

some of usagi's emotional intelligence is downplayed and she sometimes comes off as even younger than she is and that makes the ship feel uneven and i just keep thinking "there he goes off with his child bride 👋🏽" and it really doesn't help that they animated mamoru looking so much older and acting like a mature 20-something (even tho yes, he's closer to 18 but an 18yr old dating a 14yr old is still so squeakable to me)

the manga is where this ship thrives and it's more believable that they fall for each other especially bc they're on more equal footing but crystal adds in a scene in S1 that i personally love that's when sailor moon and tuxedo mask are fighting zoisite toward the middle of the season (before venus shows up)

i'm massively paraphraseing but in this scene usagi doesn't just tell but shows mamoru through her tears and pained expression that she understands he's deeply lonely and that it hurts her, she doesn't want that for him, she wants to do everything in her power to make sure he never feels that way again

and mamoru tells her that SHE is everything he wants and he doesn't need a magical stone to find out who he is and where he belongs not when she's standing beside him bc her strength and kindness are inspiring and he's not afraid or lonely when around her

"i won't let you be alone anymore" / "seeing your strength makes me so happy" couples are my downfall and this scene cracks me right open

and this is BEFORE they regain their memories i'm fucking dead!

English Dub

i vaguely remember ppl shitting on the English dub of Crystal and yes i watched it in Japanese first but the English dub is actually really great?! especially when compared to the 90's English dub!! i love Usagi's VA and i think all the voices match the characters pretty well

The Transformations and Character Designs

okay so those 3D transformations are bad

the animation is really jarring at first and yeah it's not good i don't like it but after a while you just sort of...idk get used to it and it's not a make-or-break thing imo now did the 90s anime do it better? fuck yeah! but by the end of the season i just felt meh about them and barely cared

i remember the character designs getting A. LOT. of hate and yeah i agree that they are too sharp and angular and that the manga was more a cross between the 90s and crystal character designs - but that's another thing you get used to and also doesn't that get fixed later?

plus idk i kind like that both animated versions each take one end of the spectrum with the manga in the middle 🤷🏾‍♀️

The Big One

okay now the big one - the supposed past love between the 4 heavenly kings and the inner planet guardians that wasn't in the manga and definitely not in the 90s version where these guys are handled more interestingly

i think this subby-subplot that's not even really a subplot is stupid and doesn't amount to anything and doesn't actually make a ton of sense if earthlings and...and moonlings being together is forbidden the serenity had to SNEAK AWAY to see her earth prince and it does sort of take away some of the tragedy that is serenity and endymion's doomed love

like i was going "what was the point of that" when the kings all die and the sailor girls are weeping for 2secs before getting back to busniess and i get wanting to expand more on all 8 of these characters, but that's not how you do it - 90s-SM expanded on these characters better because plot points were stretched out and we got to know the characters more slowly over a longer period of time (plus 2 of the kings were lovers! that's cute as hell!!)

basically this whole thing was shoved into the story last minute with very minimal build up barely any conclusion and it's really uninteresting

0.3/5🌙 (only bc venus dropping a few hints every few episodes was done well enough-ish but it was still stupid in the end and shouldn't have been included the way it was)

Conclusion

even with that though crystal still isn't that bad - overall it's actually pretty good and i love experiencing the manga coming to animated live

the OST is beautiful! and even tho NOTHING tops the 90s theme song that crystal usamamo love theme is fucking gorgeous 😍 in fact all the music in crystal is top teir imo

i do miss the focus on the female friendship tho and kinda wish crystal took some of that 90s-SM female friendship focus BUT 90s-SM just had so much more time to work with and at the end of the day SM is a romance so i understand why the anime adapting the manga more closely focused on the romance more heavily (and that usamamo scene i talked about above is still so. damn. good!)

anyway if you're like me and didn't bother watching crystal bc the hate and backlash when it first came out i say give it a try

it's still cute and still sailor moon and so far it's getting a 4/5🌙

i'll probably do another one of these when i finish S2 (jon and eng) and the volumes it adapted

Just remember there are numerous perspectives to this shitshow but there are two major sides to this.

This being pushed and sold to the public and looking an entire different way from those who no absolutely nothing except she looks like a child/teen.

The other side of course is the fandom and that’s why everything they do seems insane to us because based on what we know it doesn’t add up.

So if you all choose to stay to debunk, have fun, keep things in perspective, if you know it’s PR, don’t freak out over little bs they pull.

Also remember things aren’t always as they appear so it’s easy for theories and speculation to feel factual when they aren’t.

I can’t do this anymore, I’m too emotionally invested due to Chris. I was concerned about him throughout this mess. He’s been open about something I struggle with as well. I used this fandom as a unknowingly as a distraction especially during 2020, but due to my depression and anxiety getting increasingly worse, each new thing hits me as though I personally know this man and that’s not good.

I legit woke up with a depressive episode the morning of his so called page six wedding announcement and that didn’t happen until Sunday evening, but it damn sure didn’t help my ass.

I battle suicidal thoughts (not over this shit) and feel alone in my own crap, so I can’t deal with whatever the fuck this is. It’s too much. I fight for my life each and everyday and I can’t waste it wondering if a multi millionaire may or may not be willing or unwilling in a pr stunt or married to a racist for real. I’m black and deal with enough as it is. I hate myself for getting invested in this man. I mess up trying to see good in people I actually know and I mistakenly applied that to him. I fell into the celebrity bs that consumes society and feel like an idiot for it.

So yeah it’s a big world out there, the fandom is 1% of that. Focus on seeing this from the angle of the billions of strangers who might or might not give a shit about Chris Evans outside of Captain America.

To the world He’s married and to a woman from Portugal. If it’s revealed to be Pr, he’ll be known as the Chris who lied about being married.

Someone mentioned how his costars are problematic too and that doesn’t help because that just aligns that he would bypass the racism and still marry her, but idk.

There’s no winning here unless this is revealed as PR and CAA was using him for money gain or something, and if he finds a great team who knows how to do clean up. Acknowledges his part in this but that won’t happen. He’s a Hollywood star who has people paid to clean up in the worse way for him and her now.

I wish Chris the best but if this is indeed legit…..fuck him. Idc 🤷🏾‍♀️

Seeing Vanessa’s kinda petty behavior when Austin started getting praised, i think if he did do something terrible to her she would hint at it. Like she doesn’t seem like the type to be quiet about being cheated on. Given how petty she is acting just when he gets any positive attention from critics and stuff. Like it’s just very strange. As if she didn’t want to see him succeed without her. Which if you love someone, wouldn’t you want them to succeed? And she never flat out said anything bad about him. We will never know for sure, but I think it says a lot. She really just wanted to be married. That’s all she’s ever been straight forward about in the interviews she has for. She just leaves some snarky comments here and there, and some shady posts to encourage people to shit on him. Of course we don’t know these people personally. But I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about Austin. Keep in mind, he’s been in this business for a very very long time. And left good impressions wherever he went.

And like you said, Austin has been in this game for a LONG time, and everyone has had nothing but good things to say about him.

I know Austin is not perfect... But it always feels a little SUS to me when it seems like there's a massive hate campaign going on for someone online, and then you actually look at their interviews or ways of behaving, and it's so totally different from what people are claiming about the person. 🤔

What are your hopes and dreams for a Hen storyline? Because I'm with you in longing for one. However, there's a conflicted part of me that thinks her storyline would be about medical school. Which feels like it's going to take her away from the firefam. Which my brain just will not allow me to contemplate.

So, any Hen storyline spec that doesn't involve her leaving the 118?

I love that Hen is about to be ✨The Moment✨ in med school but I can't look too closely at her not being a part of the firefam 😭

The number one thing I'd love to see that isn't a storyline per se but would be an interesting aside is how Hen and Karen met, and their wedding, and.... actually I just want a Henren wedding episode

Aisha Hinds just delivers the emotional shit SO well and it's not that I want her to go through it but she always serves that stuff up good. I'd like to see her and Karen continuing to foster kids, and I'd love Nia to keep being featured. I'd also love to see a longer storyline bw Hen and her mom bc I absolutely love her character.

Holy shit and it's Tom's fans who are toxic? That anon is exactly the type of trash Z's fans spout, it's just generally not in forums where Tom fans or genuine Tomdayas hang out. They don't like Tom at all, they just like Z and want to police how she lives as some kind of purist fantasy of the perfect Black woman and Tom also having relationships with white women really threatens that.

Anon, there are toxic sides to BOTH fandoms. I've lost count how many times I've repeated that. 🥴

I've been saying that for days (even months) in here. Both Tom AND Zendaya have toxic sides to their fandom (let's call a spade a spade 😒), and like I already mentioned, most of these fans are outliers. EVERY popular fandom has them. 🤷🏾‍♀️ The majority of their fans are not this way.

Not sure what your last sentence was even trying to imply, but if you have a problem with fans bringing up racism, then maybe you should ask yourself why that is 🤨 If anything, as a TRUE Tom fan, you all should be outraged that ppl are hating on your fave's gf just because of the color of her skin. But somehow, the only sentiment I've been seeing these past few days in my inbox when ppl being this topic up, is: "Why are we talking about this so much?" , "You only find this stuff if you're looking for it" (seriously? 🤨), "Well Z's fans are x,y,z also!"

Enough with the fan wars already. There are toxic fans in all popular major fandoms. And I've already mentioned many times before how Z's fans were rude towards Tom during the Jacdaya era, and how many of them didn't even care about what type of man JE was, and were silly to just focus on his height as being the sole determining factor of what makes a good bf. 🙄🙄

I have discussed all of this on this blog. I feel like some ppl have selective amnesia or smthg lol. 🥴

Second, in case it wasn't already obvious, I am a black woman. I am not a man, and I am not white. So the issues of race, especially where it pertains to black women is definitely going to affect me deeper, especially when I see more people in my inbox being racist towards Zendaya than I ever see of Zendaya's fans being racist (or rude) towards Tom in my inbox.

I did an exposé video on the type of nonsense that used to come into my inbox months back, and if you saw it you would see that an overwhelming portion of those hate asks and anti Tomdaya comments came from Tom fans in my inbox who (for some reason!) are threatened by the fact that Tom is dating a biracial/black woman and not a white woman.

But even after all of that.... even after ALL OF THAT..... I have STILL said in here that I don't believe that all of Tom's fans are this way (I keep saying they are a small minority y'all), AND I don't think it's any reflection on Tom as a person. He can't help who his fans are anymore than you can help who decides to have a crush on you. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I already called that Anon out on their rude (and actually racist imo) comment/ask. Idk what else you want me to do Anon. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Anyway, I'm so done with the fan wars talk.

I am a proud Tomdaya Shipper, but this is 2021. I think many of us are happy to sip the tea, but I am fearful because shit this perfect, usually means something else is happening behind closed and it may not be as "prefect" as it looks. I REALLY want it to be true and I want them both to ride into the sunset, but to play polite devil's advocate, what if this is all just tea and they have moved on? Will we be able to survive a blow like that?

When you talk about "a blow"... First of all, I think that some ppl take shipping a little too seriously. Me, I personally don't. 🤷🏾‍♀️ For me it's just fun lol.

If it turns out that TZ are just really really REALLY good friends and nothing more this time around, it really won't be a big deal to me. I'm personally just happy that they were able to mend things after their breakup and the slight drama that ensued after lol. 😆

It's clear they really care about each other a lot, so them being friends again is already a "Win" in my Tomdaya Playbook if you ask me lol. 😄

I think fans should loosen up a little when it comes to shipping. It's not some contest. It's about real ppl with real feelings. Only they can know where their "friendship" is going. Meanwhile, I'm just happy to sit here and sip the tea and eat the popcorn lol 😆

Even when Tomdaya broke up the first time, I wasn't angry. I was sad for them, but I didn't harp on it, or get upset with either of them, etc.

I've even said time and time again on here that I actually think that the breakup was def necessary!

The way that I look at it, Tom and Z are two of some of the sweetest ppl in the industry today. I wish them nothing but the best. 😊 If that involves them getting back together romantically, then of course I'll be happy for them! 😃 But if that means that they just remain friends and move on romantically with other people, then that's fine also! 😃👍🏾

As long as Z doesn't date another jerk like JE, I'll be fine lol. 😆 And I never really cared who Tom was dating, cuz I could tell Olivia was def a rebound. And with Nadia I thought it was nice he was claiming a gf publicly for the first time with his level of fame, but the way the relationship started, as well as the way things seemed kind of unbalanced btwn them, I didn't get the impression they would last tbh.

But you'll never hear me calling Tom's gfs derogatory words or hating on them, or going to their IG and making hateful comments. No way lol! I didn't even do that to JE and I really didn't care for him much lol. 😅 At the end of the day though, even with JE, I realized that it's Z's LIFE, and if he makes her happy, then fine! 🤷🏾‍♀️ Even if I had bad vibes and saw red flags about him, I had to still respect the fact that he was who she was dating at the time... and part of me was even kind of glad that she was getting out of her controlling bubble a bit, and was trying to change up her dating techniques...

So idk if this really answers your question really lol 😅, but I guess the short answer would be, it wouldn't be a big deal to me.

In fact, if you were to take Tom and Z out of it, and replaced them with ANY other celebrity ex couple, and keep the SAME exact history and timeline of events, I'd be wondering the SAME EXACT thing..."are they dating again?"🤔

It's not necessarily the PEOPLE.... it's the EVENTS. Idk if that makes sense. 🤷🏾‍♀️
