Tanaka Ryuunosuke is sitting in front of you eating a scone with a sort of aggressiveness you haven’t seen in him beside on the court. The way he bites down on the scone is demonstrative, a way to show that he means business.

Said business? You’re not sure what it’s about.

You’ve been friends with Tanaka since first year but you’re not exactly close – certainly not close enough to go for baked goods alone with him. And yet, here you are.

You lean your head to the side with a frustrated-yet-given-up look, “the thing you couldn’t talk about at school? Can you mention it now?”

He lifts his hand as if to stop you as he swallows the last of the bread. There’s a moment of tense and awkward silence as you wait for him to continue the conversation, breaching whatever secret subject that wasn’t allowed near school.

He looks out the window and sighs, “they say that a clear sky brings frost soon.”

“Huh?”

Puzzled does not begin to describe what you’re feeling. He finally looks at you, a determined smile gracing his features – his hair seems to need a cut soon, it’s grown longer than his usual length, you think. “I’m here on business but on the behalf of a friend – unbeknownst to said friend, so it is of utmost importance that this remains a discreet affair.”

You’re not sure that he understands half of the words he’s using or if he just thought them fancy, so you laugh a bit. “Oookay, have I done something wrong?”

“No!” he almost jumps across the table to you, his palms hitting the surface loudly and dramatically. People around you turn their heads to see what the commotion is and with a blush and clearing of his throat, he sits back with a straight back. “Nothing wrong!”

You nod your head before you take your straw back into your mouth, getting more of your Caramel Frappuccino onto your tastebuds. You regret not buying the large size with the way the tempo is going. He nods back and crosses his arms over his chest, “I heard you like Noya.”

You choke on a portion of your frappe, hurriedly taking another sip to swallow what got stuck in your throat. You hope he regards your facial expression as due to the choking. He waits you out and hands you a napkin, “is it true?”

You clear your throat, “how the hell do you know, though?”

He smiles, “Karima told Teshi who told her big sister, Akane who then told my sister who accidentally spilled it to me in excitement.” The pride he shows irks you and you scowl, taking another loud sip of your drink to gather your reply in your mind.

He’s not wrong.

You just don’t like the fact that he knows – because then who else knows? Did he know? With how close he and Tanaka is-

“Noya doesn’t know.” Tanaka says as if reading your mind, “I wouldn’t tell your secret like that to him.”

You nod, “thank you?” he smiles proudly. You put down your drink, “well, I do like him, yeah. But what’s it to you?”

He leans closer to you and in an almost whisper replies, “he’s my bro. I’m looking out for him!”

Tanaka is a good friend. You’ve always known this about him, and this just further solidifies it. You smile at him and offer him the rest of the chocolate croissant on your plate. He happily accepts and scarfs it down quickly.

“What do you like about him?”

You pretend to think for a while but you knew the answer already before he asked you, “his smile is blinding.”

Tanaka nods approvingly, his hands crossed over his chest again, “it really is! He’s so handsome, isn’t he?” you spend a good portion of minutes talking about Nishinoya with Tanaka, which is a nice change of pace. Most people ask what you like about him with a negative attitude, unsure of what could be liked about a guy like him. You’re tired of having to defend your crush on such a reliable, sunshine-embodied man. You gush with Tanaka a few moments before Tanaka sits back again with a hum, “it’s decided. I’ll help you ask him out!”

“W-what? You don’t have to!” you protest, suddenly insecure. What if he doesn’t like you back? That’d just be so embarrassing. Your friendship with him had only recently started to bloom into something worthwhile – you don’t want to risk losing that over a silly crush.

Tanaka’s having none of your insecurity, already telling you in bright detail how to get a hold of the energetic boy best, what he likes and dislikes and which subjects you could potentially use to woo him with. When Tanaka whispers a small, “you won’t need it at all though, I know how he’s feeling.” You don’t catch it, too busy gushing at the fact of a potential confession.

What music do you listen to?

oh this is fun!

so i know a lot of people like to answer this question with like. "everything". but i do mean everything.

i grew up listening primarily to queen and bowie and the beatles (the last of which i no longer enjoy near as much, but that's fine), but also-- i grew up in the American south. second and third generation country music (think: patsy cline, loretta lynn, johnny cash, hank williams sr and jr, the carter family, charlie pride) is my lifeblood, and i have deep, deep, deep love for it (especially since i have the firm conviction that johnny cash, and the roots therein of bluegrass and folk music, was one of the unspoken forefathers of punk, but that's a different story.)

speaking of, though. i adore punk! the greats are obviously great-- i will never fault you for a ramones song-- but gods, do i love modern punk. i am actually friends (albeit very distantly) with the drummer of my favourite punk band, and one of my best friends is very good friends with their guitarist! i love folk punk (ajj my beloved [derogatory]), and jeff rosenstock sadly has my love and affection forever. one day i will marry laura jane grace and you will never hear from me again.

pop punk My Love. insert me vagueing about that One Time where fall out boy knew who i was (another story, another time). but also smaller known pop punk bands!

and, gods. indie pop/indie rock. another fun cee fact: i have been an arctic monkeys fan since 2005. i was in a livejournal community with someone from sheffield who uploaded their first demo illegally and was like "these lads are gonna be big" And Boy Were They Right.

catch me waxing poetic about lana del rey. i was the bitch marina wrote Electra Heart about (not really).

oh god synth pop. the killers are the loves of my life and holy shit was their latest album so good? we come back to my deep love for americana and that haunting nostalgic nod to small towns and rock n roll and. God.

anything queer forever. LOVE a good dance bop. unironically and forever a carly rae jepsen stan. if you think you're too good for bubblegum pop you ain't got a place in my squad.

sadly, my rap and hip hop knowledge are my weakest point, but i adore the classics when i hear them and love trying to expose myself to newer artists. wordplay is fucking amazing and rap does it so well and it deserves all the recognition it gets and more. (megan thee stallion if you are reading this i am free--)

and we circle back around to queen and bowie, who really are just my queer weirdo foundation. (and my obsession with "death on two legs", which my drummer friend insists was the birth of a type of metal music and i am inclined to agree).

i just. love music. i love cringe music, i love obscure artsy pretentious music, i love everything in between. i love "wonderwall". i love ABBA. i love sad boy midwestern emo. i love weird experimental shit that takes a few listens to get to know. i unironically love childish gambino. i miss cobra starship every day.

this doesn't pin anything down but it's not easy to pin down. it is just a thing i love in all its forms. it is Good. it is Human. it is Mine.

im not one to get clothes very often and ive worn a uniform for school all my life so im not 100% sure of my style but every since ive grown older i guess ive always wanted to dress like the 'losers' in 90s films. the most specific example is maybe kat and a few extras in 10 things i hate about you.

32 - talk about a time something or someone made you happy?

ive already done this but i really like being creative on a whim - like an idea comes to me randomly and i have the time and resources to execute it - and i end up really proud of the outcome. also ive taken to just sitting in the tub while showering & listening to music ever since the summer started and that makes me happy for some reason; like a bird under a tap and makes the heat more bearable once im out of the shower.

33 - what's a cool skill, party trick, or talent you have?

i dont really have any cool stuff about me in that sense i dont think. like im double jointed & pretty flexible but that's about it. it's really funny sometimes if im relaxed and a joint goes weird and people are like what the ever loving fuck happened to you or when i got to pick something up from the ground, i dont bend my knees and my friends are like jeez dude.

39 - do you have any pets?

not right now but over the years ive had a parrot, lots of fish and a dog most recently.

42 - what's something that's bothering you right now?

i really need to pee but im too comfortable to get up and i said id go to sleep earlier today but it's 1:30am and i have yet to get sleepy.

50 - what's your favorite book, movie and tv show?

my favourite book is the secret garden by frances hodgson burnett (i know it's technically a kid's book but it's been a favourite since i was 12), my favourite movies are the perks of being a wallflower and every studio ghibli film ever. my favourite tv shows are marvel's daredevil, marvel's jessica jones, i think better call saul would go here if i watched it and i am not okay with this. i also really like dc's cartoons especially harley quinn. kid's 'horror' cartoons also do it for me like courage the cowardly dog.

the thing that gets me about about barbie is that barbie land wasn’t even purposefully a matriarchy, barbie land came about because of the way little girls were playing with their barbies, it wasn’t created by mattel it was created by the people using the toys, so the fact that the barbies ignored the ken’s and had girls night every night wasn’t because they had some bias against him, it was just an accurate depiction of how kids play with barbies. I had some ken dolls as a child and they were essential to the plot in the sense that of course my barbie has a boyfriend because that represented the world i saw around me, but also he didn’t have any purpose in my dream world because i was only interested in what the girls were doing because they represented me and how i wanted to be, I wanted girls night every night I wanted the girls to be president and austronauts and not because of some inherent feminist idea but because I was a girl and I wasn’t thinking about boys, ken was an accessory. this movie wasn’t made to change the world but it showed a different perspective than what we usually see which I thought was fun. Men don’t have to be the centre of all our stories and its not even because we hate them, sometimes we’re just not thinking about them
