The Fallen: Genesis (Deadly Virtues #0.5) by Tillie Cole

Holy—

Tillie Cole has this way of writing that just takes my breath away. Even when she writes the darkest of scenes, I am unable to stop reading.

I cannot tell you how much I look forward to reading the Deadly Virtues series. I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into when I started The Fallen, though I had my suspicions since it was a Tillie Cole book, and boy was I not disappointed.

In fact I was quite overwhelmed.

The book has some heavy and dark scenes, but with Tillie Cole it works — they aren’t there just to be gruesome; they are there for you to experience the horror with them, to understand them as characters, which wouldn’t be the same if it was just mentioned. Despite sometimes wanting to skip the heavier scenes, there is something about how they’re dealt with and overcome later that brings about a feeling of peace and completion.

And also, the characters are all perfectly haunting. They just speak to your soul and I can’t wait to read more about them! (I have a very soft spot for Micheal, but I do cherish them all).

And the very world that she has created... leaves me speechless. I was hooked from the first page and simply unable to put it down. It was horrifyingly great!

Es para mayores de 18 años y gente que no sea sensible a temas tabú.

Habiendo dicho esto, comencemos. Lo leí hace una semana. Buenisimooo. Tillie Cole no me decepcionó, como siempre dando una historia retorcida y, definitivamente, no apta para todo público. Este es el primer libro que me compro de ella; sin embargo, no el primero que leo. Al ser de un tema tan sensible, no quise que mi familia supiera lo que estaba leyendo por lo que lo pedí en inglés. Seamos sinceros, si abres una pagina al azar del libro te puedes encontrar con cualquier tipo de situación explícita que puede incomodar y es molesto dar explicaciones. Sin dar más vueltas, daré mi opinión, la cual puede contener spoilers. Estás advertido/a.

Como siempre Tillie Cole dando una relación extraña que se complementa de alguna manera y en la cual ambos tienen pasados difíciles que los hacen ser como son. La relación entre Raphael y Maria me gustó, encontré que eran perfectos el uno para el otro.

Ella tiene/tenía tendencias sumisas que era lo que Raphael ansiaba, gracias a eso se me hizo más fácil aceptar la relación ya que ella no estaba cambiando para él, sino que esa es su personalidad. Inocente, Pura, Empatica, Buena, Tímida pero con la capacidad de defenderse y responder si es necesario. Con una fuerza y fe tan avasalladora que me dejó sorprendida. En un principio me molestó su fe ciega, su pasión por querer “salvarlo”, sin embargo comprendí de donde venía todo eso una vez que contaron su pasado, ella necesitaba creer en la salvación para poder estar con él y conocerlo, sin tener miedo o, al menos, no tanto. Su pasado fue... triste. Nadie debería pasar por eso. Spoiler alert. Me gustó como conoció a los otros seis, incluso si trataron de matarla. También adoré la relación que tuvo con ellos después de conocerlos mejor, aceptó lo que eran y lo que hacían; sin dudar los tomó como su familia.

Ahora seguiré con Raphael. Seductor, Dominante, Cruel, Malvado, Asesino. Me interesó desde el momento que apareció, me encanta cuando un personaje puede ser seductor y coqueto, hasta cambiar a frío y manipulador en un segundo. Es emocionante ver cómo reaccionan las personas en esa situación. Aunque no es algo a lo que me gustaría someterme en la realidad. Raphael es un hombre que tiene las cosas claras, le gusta y necesita matar, no cree ni quiere una salvación lo que hace que me guste más. No me agrada cuando un personaje pasa por todas emociones de no aceptar lo que son y sentir culpa o querer redimirse, prefiero que vivan con ello y ya está. Es tan tierno ver cómo empieza a sentir cosas que no entiende, como se pone celoso, como le duele ver el que ella esté sufriendo, spoiler su desesperación al darse cuenta que esta en manos de Brethren. Su pasado explica totalmente como es y su fetiche con los cuellos y la estrangulación. Fue un niño que no protegieron, que no le dieron amor ni la posibilidad de reconocerlo. Merecía mucho más de lo que fue dado, pero logró sobrevivir a todo eso. No sin consecuencias, obviamente.

Brethren. Ni siquiera quiero pensar en la profundidad del odio que llegué a sentir por ellos ya que sinceramente creo que existen personas como ellos. No entiendo cómo pueden hacer todo lo que hacen “en nombre de Dios”, buscan cualquier excusa con tal de justificar lo que hacen. Encuentro tan retorcido que algunos de ellos hayan sido “sanados” por otros, como el caso del Padre Murray y Padre Quinn. Aún así, no me sorprende. Triste, pero real.

Me gustó que durante todo el libro se mantuviera la “amenaza de muerte” hacia Maria, ya que demostraba que Raphael realmente quería cumplir su sueño y te mantenía pendiente de si lo lograría o no. Es al final del libro que encuentran una solución para mantener la relación y cumplir el sueño de Raphael.

Una cosa que me gustan sobre estos tipos de libros es que la situación es extraña y ficticia, pero puede ser real. De verdad creo que puedan haber sacerdotes o pastores que “en nombre de Dios” hagan ese tipo de cosas. Ojo, no digo que todos lo hagan, pero puede pasar. Eso es lo que me duele y molesta al leerlos. De verdad creo que la maldad humana tiene el potencial de hacer ese tipo de daño. Como también creo que puedan existir personas que son buenas, que sin importar lo que pase no cambian, que tienen el potencial de hacer bien, como en el caso de Maria.

Hace poco vi una imagen que hablaba sobre las personas que leen este tipo de historias y que pueden leer una escena de asesinato gráfico, sangriento y asqueroso, y no hacer ninguna expresión facial, no reaccionar en lo más mínimo. Nadie tendría una idea de lo que estas leyendo, pero le pones una escena de amor y se emocionan, gritan, demuestran de cualquier forma lo que están leyendo. Nunca encontré nada más acertado. Ponme una escena asquerosa y yo inmóvil, dame una escena de amor y si no grito, andas con suerte.

Todas las escenas tiernas o de amor, las disfruté. Eran preciosas, ver ese tipo de amor en una situación taan extraña, era casi esperanzador. Las escenas donde Raphael asesinaba o era cruel, eran emocionantes y podría decir que divertidas. Cualquier escena donde aparecieran los hermanos eran perfectas, denotando cada una de las marcadas personalidades. Aunque tengo diversos sentimientos entorno a Gabriel. Todavía no sé cómo me siento respecto a él. Valoro lo que hace, pero el tema de castigarse y tratar de redimirse no es lo mío. El final, fue un poco estresante. Spoiler, no debió quedar vivo. Así de simple, pero si no fuera por eso no se podría seguir así que vivo con ello.

Debo admitir que si bien dije que no reacciono a escenas “fuertes”, hubo una que simplemente me dio asco y cuando relea el libro, definitivamente, me la saltaré y es algo que recomiendo sin tienes mi problema con las agujas. Spoiler: las escenas donde el Padre Murray, se pinchaba con una aguja para satisfacerse. Eso lo encontré asqueroso.

Finalmente, quiero decir que el libro es buenísimo si ya has leído a esta autora o algo parecido, sino lo encontrarás enfermo, asqueroso, retorcido. Lo cual es, pero uno sabe a lo que va cuando lo va a leer y tiene advertencias del tipo de tema que toca. Por lo que si lo encuentras demasiado, déjalo y lee algo más ligero.

¿Lo amé? Si.

¿Lo disfruté? Absolutamente.

¿Lo releería? Sin dudas.

¿Espero que la saga continúe? Denme a Jegudiel.

That. Was. INCREDIBLE!! With this prequel, Tillie Cole not only took my mind down a dark and painful road, but my heart was along for the ride. I read this entire book with my heart constantly in my throat, not knowing what to expect next, and completely devoted to its characters. Holy Innocents was the home to orphaned children. A residence of the Catholic Church, the priests were their mentors and children were being led down a righteous path. Most turned to the church and became priests themselves. Others... well, let's just say that they weren't full of righteousness. But Holy Innocents holds secrets, ones that can tear a young boy apart, things that can cause disillusionment, and ways that could derail even the most pious of souls. What do you do when all that is good becomes bad? I loved everything about this story, from the introduction of the seven angels who will be featured in the books to come, the history of the Brethren, and the convoluted motives of the characters. The author did a brilliant job of illustrating the torment these boys suffered through while they took turns twisting my emotions. I don't know what it is about their proclivities that makes them so attractive, but I'm here to learn everything there is to know about them. I'm not sure if happy endings are in the future, but I can't wait to discover where these stories will lead.

FINALLY got the guts to read SICK FUX and got in paperback because of it’s darkly beautiful cover. Rabbit and Raphael are psychos and I love them to bits. I reaaaaally want the next deadly virtues book. I had a fun time making Dolly & Rabbit and Maria & Raphael’s @alohasushicore picrews
