What do you think Frisk's life was like before arriving in the underground? What do you think their life was like a few years after all that? What kind of person d'ya think they'd be?
this is a fairly hard question because for a long time frisk was effectively an enigma to me. i think frisk is one of the biggest writing weak points in the game and that their character suffers because toby only did the big reveal that theyre a separate person from you too late to do really anything with it, which is why hes focusing so hard on kris in deltarune.
however, i have been thinking more about them lately and trying to figure them out from the few canon details we have. here are some of the lines in the game that i think can give us a peak into frisks upbringing and personality:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these lines to me seem to imply frisk most likely grew up/lives in a neglectful environment where they dont feel loved or appreciated, whether in a home with parents or an orphanage or somewhere else. their caretakers are clearly absent enough that frisk managed to make it to mount ebott, for whatever reason it is they went. they do seem to at leastl partly want to go back home though, as they ask toriel when they can and you have the option to say they have somewhere else to go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
they seem very independent and used to doing things for themself. they prefer finding fun in things in their environment to entertain themself with (like playing in leaves or staring at mouse holes) and potentially arent actually used to having toys to play with. they dont like the idea of being trapped in the ruins with toriel and want to leave despite the promise of a loving home.
Tumblr media
...however, they say this about asgore later. they seem to vastly prefer things like toriels homemade pie to making their own instant noodles. maybe theyd be willing to stay with someone on their own terms? you are given the option to stay with toriel or leave on your own at the end of the game. maybe frisk could be fine with either.
Tumblr media
i also choose to believe the 'less grammatically correct' options in the role-play sequence are frisk. the only thing this really proves in that theyre kind of silly. but what undertale character isnt? things like them wiggling or copiously flirting or generally going along with shenanigans tell us they like having a good time like everyone else.
Tumblr media
also, i dont have anything specific to say about the lines you get from running from a fight but i want to include them because theyre fun and some of the only 'probably frisk dialogue' we get that isnt just options.
as for post-mercy, i think the person everyone is talking to in the alarm clock dialogue is frisk. theyre just being told about events they werent there for, like the house party with alcohol they werent invited to for obvious reasons. i think both them having stayed with toriel or gone somewhere else are possible and there isnt strong evidence for either. theres even less evidence about whether they became the ambassador or not. maybe they werent there for some of the hangouts because they were busy with politics? i dont think toriel would let that happen but if any kid in the world could be a successful diplomat its absolutely frisk.

My attempt at rationalising who the rare pair could be:
The characters must follow at least one of the following criteria-
Very little presence in game, likely not extending beyond a scene or two in person.
Has a more common ship, or the characters they are shipped with are more commonly found shipped together.
Very little external presence, either in merch or fanworks.
The characters likely have to have some crucial information either "hidden" (e.g Alphys crushing on Asgore being... concerningly not know about) or revealed after the main burst of Undertales popularity.
And from this, I have gathered my closest guesses as to who it could be.
Mad Mew Mew X Asgore:
Maddie was revealed in the switch port, long after the initial spike of popularity.
She was revealed to be crushing on Asgore in Deltarune, a fairly hidden piece of dialogue that lacks her face, matching the above criteria.
Most commonly shipped with Undyne + Alphys (OT3 fr)
To most players, only appears in YouTube playthroughs and has no merch of her ( I think?)
Asgore has little to no merch, owing to his reveal at the end of the game.
Only really shows up in one scene (two if you count Neutral Fight and True Pacifist ending as different scenes)
Has more common ships, like with Toriel (Asgore, I love you but you gotta let it go man) and Gaster ig (Kingdings is a fire ship I'm ngl)
Do I need to go into how little the fanbase acknowledges this man's existence?
Do I honestly think that people are shipping Maddie and Asgore enough for a whole two fics to be made?
I wish No, no I do not.
Is It still fun to think about this logically?
Yes.
Does it make more sense to be Alphys X Asgore with the given criteria?
Yes, but I Stan maddie too much for her to not get this chance.
... I'll be damned, that does only have two fics. BUT. 1) saying this with all the love in the world do you really think I'd care enough about asgore for this kind of thing 2) they are both fics by my good friend tali and i know for a FACT their writing kicks ass. so I'd never say anything negative about em
in conclusion: nice try. but you can try all the combinations you want... i never said there were only 2 characters

Don't Forget
[Sans x Female!Reader]
6: Whaaat? Nooo! Things are Definitely NOT Getting Suspicious!
A/N: So, Sans is a skeleton monster. Yes, he doesn’t have “muscles or skin”, but he’s still a monster. So it’s less that he’s a skeleton, and more so that he’s a monster that looks like a skeleton. That being said, every time I want to write “he raised an eyebrow,” or “his muscles twitched,” I REALLY don’t want to have to clarify “not actual muscles because he’s a skeleton, but he’s still a monster so the same logic still applies to him” EVERY TIME 😭 So please hold those comments and let me make my life a little easier 😭 thank you and Gesundheit!!
Anyway, thank you for reading, and please enjoy this chapter!
♪───✿(✧◕ᴗ◕✧)✿────♪
THIS SHIT IS HARD!!!
Tears pool in your eyes, agony reflects in pools of [e/c] and frustration colors your expression.
“TORIELLL!!”
“Yes, my child?”
“THIS SHIT HARD!!”
She smiles in amusement, holding in a chuckle, “It’s not so bad. It’s your second attempt and it already looks like a Froggit…. If… If you squint…”
You sigh with a defeated smile, “You’re right, you’re right. It’s just… One of my toxic traits is thinking I can do anything without any prior practice or skill.”
“That must be difficult to cope with.”
“Oh, dude. Like you wouldn’t believe.”
So, crocheting isn’t going as well as you’d hoped. You would think that your desire to become a Surgeon would mean that your hands are pretty steady. They’re… steady enough, you suppose. It could just be a major case of Skill Issue™ that is holding you back. Your spirits are beginning to be affected by this, though.
This is the third time Toriel has tried introducing you to a new hobby just for you to fail miserably. Six days ago, you two were trying out knitting. Then three days ago, you two tried clay sculpting. And today? It’s crocheting.
You’re not actually complaining though, you’re having a lot of fun despite your failed attempts! More accurately, you’re having fun hanging out with the goat mom so it doesn’t matter if you were bad at this stuff. You understand that the reason why she’s doing this is because she wants you to have fun and not be bored having to stay inside all the time. You really appreciate the effort she’s putting in, so the most you can do is try to give each of these activities a genuine shot.
You shake your head to get back in the game, “Okay, okay. Let me try again, I think I can do it right this time.”
────
You flip to the next page of a random history book you’ve been reading. “Trapped behind the barrier and fearful of further human attacks, we retreated. Far, far into the earth we walked, until we reached the cavern's end. This was our new home, which we named… “Home.” As great as our king is, he is pretty lousy at names.”
“Oh shit, it’s this book!” You perk up with a smile, “I’ve been looking for this damn book. It only took me two and a half weeks of being here and going through the whole shelf. Why is it all the way down here?”
With Toriel out of the house yet again, you decided to take up reading once more. Toriel leaves the house for a few hours every day, she always goes to the very beginning of the Ruins (where you fell in) to check if another human has fallen down. You wonder if one of these days Toriel will come home with that child. Would Frisk be thrown off by your presence? Or will they, for some reason, find you as a threat and try to Reset in the hopes of getting rid of you?
Nah, Frisk isn’t that type of person. They have jerk dialogue options in the Pacifist route, but you never consider them to be true to Frisk. The possibility still makes you nervous.
The history book isn’t very long, and before long you reached the last page. You’re about to put it back but decide to move it to the middle of the shelf instead. You can’t explain it, but it feels better in that spot instead.
Hm…
You put your hands on your hips. Well, you guess you can try painting before Toriel gets back for lunch.
────
It’s been three and a half weeks, and Toriel is running out of options for you. She’s considering getting you a job in the small city in the Ruins so you have something to do. In your boredom, you’ve read most of the books in her home, you cook for her now all of the time, and you clean all the time, too. You only seem to like doing the other hobbies if Toriel is there to do it with you.
She knows, though, that you really need to get out of the house. You’re young, energetic, and adventurous; despite your resolve to understand that if you’re not careful, you could be killed, she knows that you can’t stay inside all the time.
So, she goes to a friend for help.
“Actually, before I must go,” Toriel says a little hesitantly, “There is something I’d like to ask of you. I-I’d like a favor.”
Sans’ smile becomes a little strained, though he supposes it doesn’t matter if he keeps up that facade since there isn’t anyone around. But it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile. And yeah, he’s a skeleton and thus does not have any muscles, but he’s still a monster, so there’s a possibility for anything.
“a favor? well, i can’t say i’m all powerful and knowing, but if you tell me what it is, i might be able to help out,” The comic replies.
“You’ve mentioned going to the Waterfalls and Hotlands a few times, correct? Do you perhaps know a handful of people?”
“uh, i guess i do. why?”
“Would you happen to know any ghost monsters? Particularly, a sad-looking ghost who pretends to sleep a lot. He was here a few weeks ago, but has not returned,” Toriel thinks back to you expressing wanting to be friends with that ghost, “There is no way for me to reach out to him, so I was wondering if it would be at all possible for you to find him somehow, and send him my way.”
HUH?
Toriel is talking about Napstablook, Sans knows him the same way he knows almost everyone in the Underground (after so many Resets, he took it upon himself to know the different people, especially those who have a connection with Frisk). He lives in Waterfall, alone and generally keeps to himself. He sometimes goes to the Ruins just to hang out by himself as well.
Why… Why does Toriel want to know about him all of a sudden?
“uh, i think i know who you’re talking about. did he do something wrong?”
“Oh, heavens no! There’s just… something I’m curious about, that’s all. I see him often, but I never go out of my way to say hello.”
“oh… kay?” This is so weird, “yeah, i can find him and let him know you’re looking for him.”
Toriel smiles in relief, “Thank you so much, friend. I should really get going now. Until next time.”
“yeah, ‘till next time.”
Sans hears Toriel walk away in a hurry, scratching his skull in confusion as he also begins his walk to Snowdin. What the fuck was that? Even before the kid came and ruined everything, Toriel had not once expressed being curious about other monsters. She’s under the assumption that monsters still fight humans out of malice, and not because they just feel like they have to at this point.
Why is this suddenly different? It can’t really be because this is the natural development Toriel goes through, right? Nothing in Sans’ past experience hints at this kind of development in Toriel, or that it could be capable on her own-
‘it can’t be possible on her own.’
Sans stops walking.
No… Could it really be…?
Frisk is back in the Underground, and is staying in the Ruins?
────
The sussy skeleton knocks his knuckles against a door (albeit he had to knock harder than anyone usually has since he’s wearing pink gloves at the moment), huffing slightly while waiting for an answer. He’s tapping his foot impatiently on the ground, looking around aimlessly at nothing in particular. To Napstablook’s credit, he doesn’t make the other wait for too long. Instead of opening the door, the ghost just phases through it.
Napstablook is looking at the other in confusion, which is completely understandable.
“oh… hi, sans…”
“hey, buddy. how are ya?”
Napstablook’s headphones slowly fade away into nothingness. Wow, impressive skill. Sans has no idea how he did that.
“i’m doing alright, i guess… i was just working on a new remix…” Napstablook avoids eye contact, “um, sans…”
“yeah?”
“not that i don’t mind that you’re here, but… you never come here and we never really talk… did you need something…?”
Sans sighs a short laugh, “heh. you’re straightforward, huh? yeah, there is something i need to tell you.”
“oh. wh-what is it?”
“you were in the ruins a few weeks ago, right?”
“how-how did you know…?”
Sans shrugs, “heard it from that monster lady who takes care of the ruins. she was wondering why you stopped showing up, and wants to see you as soon as it’s convenient for you.”
“oh…” Napstablook doesn’t have eyebrows, but his big ‘ol eyes are expressive enough to show some confusion, “that lady…? i thought she didn’t want me there anymore because of that human…”
Shit, so Frisk is in the Ruins! Sans forces himself to stay calm. Sans raises a brow and leans forward a bit.
“a human, huh? now, that’s somethin’. you remember how they look like?”
At this, the ghost smiles softly and meekly, “yeah… i didn’t get a good look ‘caues i was laying down, but she was wearing a striped brown dress, and had kind, [e/c] eyes. must be a kid that the lady is looking after…”
…So it’s not Frisk. As far as Sans is aware, Frisk has always been androgynous, and he knows the ghost monster isn’t an asshole to misgender them purposely. (Ignore that Sans at that moment forgot Napstablook wouldn’t have any memory of Frisk.) Not only that but a striped, brown dress? Unless Frisk decided to get a new look, then Napstablook was describing someone else.
“really now? you don’t think this could be an evil human, do you?”
“oh, no way… she was really nice to me and had a lot of faith in my fake sleep… no one has ever given me that much encouragement in my fake sleep before.”
…That’s nice, Blooky.
“if only i could remember her name… the big monster lady said it once…”
Sans widens his eye sockets slightly, “come on now, bud. i know you can remember it.”
Napstablook squeezes his eyes, “mmnn… it was… it was… s… sa… mm… de… ehhh…”
The skeleton tenses up, his fists being held in front of himself like a child overfilled with anticipation.
“i think it was… uh…”
“…?”
“...i got nothing. sorry…”
Sans sighs heavily in disappointment, “it’s fine, buddy. it was a long shot, anyway.”
“well, i can tell you when i find out… if you want…”
“hey, not a bad idea,” Sans holds his gloved hand to his chin in thought, “try to be discrete though, yeah? we don’t wanna scare the human thinking that a lot of monsters are after her.”
“…actually, why do you wanna know about the human?” Napstablook shrinks back slightly, “you don’t wanna take her soul, do you…?”
Hey! Sans may not like humans (and Frisk certainly didn’t help with that), but he’s not a heartless monster (hah). Granted, if this new human that’s with Toriel is a jerk, and Toriel doesn’t make him also promise to keep her safe, then he might do something drastic and violent. He knows that it’s rash and rather harsh, but can the blame really be on him after all he’s had to endure?
“nah, i’m not interested in capturing any human,” Sans said, you know, like a liar, “you can’t blame a skeleton for being worried though, right? it’s been so long since the last human was down here, ya know?”
“yeah, i guess that’s true…” Napstablook resummons his headphones with, presumably, magic, “i should get going then… i’ll see you later, sans…”
“see ya later, bud.”
Napstablook at least has the manners to not pass through Sans, and instead takes the time to float around him to make his way to the Ruins.
Sans watches him leave for a moment before taking a shortcut home. More specifically, he takes a shortcut to his bedroom. He sighs in relief, ditching his pink slippers by the door to drag his feet to his bed.
On the way, he nabs a notebook from his self-sustaining tornado made of trash. By his command, the bunched up, weird, creasy ball of his covers unravels itself to lay out on his worn mattress.
With a sigh, the skeleton flops down face first on his bed.
Clink.
Ouch.
Sans lifts his head with a wince, not appreciating the sans-ation of his forgotten pen falling out of his eye socket. Huh. He’s been looking for this pen, guess it’s been lost in his covers all this time. He takes it and rolls over to his back, opening up his notebook and flipping through the pages until he reaches a blank one. The monster clicks his pen and scribbles on the top corner until the ink starts to flow out of the ball point.

RESET #43: Post-Flowey (207 days since the last reset)
there’s a new human in the underground. napstablook was describing a girl, presumably a child. what’s with all the children falling to the underground? anyway, he swears up and down that she’s not evil or harmful, but i doubt it. how long as she been in the ruins? why did toriel hide this information from me?
it might have to do with the fact we’ve been drifting apart lately. about two months ago i noticed she’s been more reclusive and less willing to talk for long. i think she can pick up that i haven’t been putting in my all lately. i can’t bring myself to really care that much anymore, which is probably why she doesn’t enjoy talking to me anymore. i don’t blame her.
it’s been worse recently though. about a month ago, she’s been really different. she’s a lot more energetic, but i can tell when she talks to me that she would rather be somewhere else. maybe that’s when the human girl showed up. she has to be a pro at manipulating if toriel is enjoying this human’s company.
or maybe all these resets are getting to me, and the human isn’t that bad after all.
only time will tell.
luckily (or maybe not) napstablook is going to the ruins and will check out the human. hopefully he remembers to ask for the girl’s name, and tell me anything else that can be relevant. maybe the human has something to do with toriel asking for him. i can’t think of another reason why.
it makes me wonder… if frisk never had shown up at all, would this be the natural order of what was to happen? that another human would eventually fall in anyway?
whatever. i’ll learn more once napstablook comes back from the ruins.
i hope he comes back from the ruins…
——
Whelp, that’s enough thinking for today. Sans has no idea when that ghost will come back, so he might as well take a nap. It’s been a long 40 minutes, he’s earned it.

That Wordsearch - A Masterpost
So I got a request from @drowninnoodles on this post for an explanation of the Ice-E wordsearch and I thought, why not use the opportunity to collect together all the weirdness surrounding this wordsearch in a masterpost.
The Ice-E wordsearch is basically a two-second gag in Undertale that serves to play up Sans's laziness. The game promises a puzzle and then instead delivers you an unplayable wordsearch that does nothing, it's pretty funny.
But thanks to a little game called Deltarune, it gained a whole new dimension of weird.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A screenshot from Undertale showing the "Monster Kids Word Search". It's a kids' word search featuring a mascot labelled "Ice-E" who looks like an ice cube with a bear's face.]
This wordsearch lives rent free in my brain. It features a character only found in Deltarune... but it appears in Undertale? It's clearly from Ice-E's restaurant in Deltarune but describes the four areas of Undertale perfectly? Giasfcfebrehber?
Let me break this down.
The Undertale Interpretation
The wordsearch itself makes its only appearance in Undertale. Its purpose is just to be a somewhat functional puzzle for the purposes of the joke but many keen-eyed players noticed that there's a cool secret in it: the word list references the areas and bosses in the game. The first column describes the four areas: "fall" is the Ruins, "winter", Snowdin, "spring" Waterfall and "summer" Hotland. Corresponding to each of these is the boss in each area: "monster" refers to Toriel, "skeletons" Papyrus (Sans too, presumably), "mermaid" is Undyne and "robot" is Mettaton.
As for the final column, I did a bit of digging and thanks to this Reddit post I learned that there is an NPC that appears to be smoking a cigar in the game: one of the Snowdin library NPCs. She's also the one who happens to calls herself the "number-one word-search creator in the entire underground". (I always thought she was chewing on her pen. Guess this makes more sense.)
Tumblr media
[Image ID: a pixelated sprite from Undertale of one of the Snowdin NPCs: a lady who appears to be leaning on a piece of paper and smoking a cigar.]
"Hot" seems to match the Hotland-related words on that row. As for "giasfclfebrehber", it feels like something Toby would write after he got tired of thinking up words.
The other weird little detail about this wordsearch is that when the Fun Value is set to 56 or 57, a second character appears on the wordsearch, a snowman labelled "Nightmare":
Tumblr media
[Image ID: the same wordsearch, this time featuring an extra mascot character who is a snowman labelled "Nightmare".]
Weird.
Anyway, that's all there is to the wordsearch. The evidence pretty clearly indicates that the lady in the library made it, Sans used it as a puzzle instead of going to the effort of making his own, and there's a fun little Easter egg in the word list. Done and dusted.
Nah, just kidding. It's way more interesting than that.
The Deltarune Interpretation
So Ice-E never actually appears anywhere in Undertale.
Isn't that odd.
But one place where Ice-E very prominently DOES make an appearance is in Hometown in Deltarune. There's a restaurant called Ice-E's P"e"zza which has Ice-E as its mascot. There are several references to Ice-E in the game's dialogue and there's also a whole lot of weirdness surrounding the character of Ice-E themselves, but I'll try to stay on track and just stick to the wordsearch specifically.
Yeah... Ice-E only appears in Deltarune. Ice-E's restaurant only appears in Deltarune. The wordsearch looks remarkably like something you'd receive in a restaurant as a kid to keep you entertained while you wait for your meal.
What's something from Ice-E's restaurant doing in Undertale?
More to the point, why does Sans have it?
There are plenty of theories (better than mine) already on the topic of Sans and Papyrus originally being from Deltarune and crossing universes into Undertale, but this has got to be one of my favourite pieces of evidence for it. I made a post about it a couple of years ago which got big for some reason.
Giasfclfebrehber
see also: giasfelfebrehber, giasfclfubrehber
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A screenshot from Deltarune. A letter puzzle is set out on the ground and Susie, Kris and Ralsei stand in front of it. The puzzle has been completed to say "GIASFELFEBREHBER".]
Deltarune sees the return of fan favourite characters such as Toriel, Sans, Undyne, and, in a chapter 2 exclusive, the one and only "Giasfelfebrehber"! Yes, it's that keysmash from Ice-E's wordsearch that I said Toby probably put in when he got fed up with thinking of real words.
Except it isn't! It's a single letter different to Undertale's "giasfclfebrehber"! Which, in turn, is a single letter different from the word that can actually be found in the body of the wordsearch, "giasfclfubrehber"! Why must you torment me, Toby, I have tags to write.
The word can be found in the leftmost teacup puzzle in Cyber Fields. The puzzle rewards a picture of Ice-E which glitches out, and a blue checkmark. If you speak to Susie while attempting the puzzle, she says it's "Ice-E's catchphrase".
What does it mean? Honestly, I just had a good chuckle when I first played this scene. Toby took a tiny part of a previous game and wove it into a joke five years later. But when you dig a little deeper, it's not just a punchline. Susie reckons it's Ice-E's catchphrase - and it appears in the Undertale wordsearch. Unless a) Ice-E exists in the Undertale universe and b) has the same catchphrase across all universes, this seems like pretty clear evidence that the wordsearch isn't from Undertale. The wordsearch is in the wrong game. Somehow, a little piece of paper crossed the boundary between universes.
Conclusions
(Edited now that I'm more awake)
There are plenty of incidences in Undertale and Deltarune of world-breaking between the games. Sans's dialogue in chapter 1 suggesting he knows he's met us before, Fun Value events, Clam Girl's dialogue changing just before Deltarune's release. Gaster. But the reason why the wordsearch is so interesting is because it's a tangible object. A piece of paper that's been zapped across universes and transplanted into another game. It's evidence of not just a metaphysical, but a physical connection between the two game universes.
If it turns up as an actual object in a future Deltarune chapter I'm gonna go feral.

Damn Jazz Back At It Again With The Helluva Boss Rambles
Back on my bullshit again with another post now that I’ve mellowed out from the shock of how shit that episode was lol
I wish mobile made it easier to add the “Keep Reading” tab but it’s fine
I’ve seen so many people go around being like “o it’s ok if Stella’s generic and not given more personality like everyone else because women can be bad didn’t you know that something something Amber Herd” and apparently anyone who thinks otherwise is just a Vivziepop hater who thinks she’s a misogynist (love the strawman shit mmm so juicy). And while evil for evil’s sake can be fun and cool in something like Sleeping Beauty (aka an adaptation of a fairy tale that’s already a story of “good vs evil”), why would you expect me to be chill with that in a show where the demons are, for the most part, more than just evil demons? If Stella was some minor, one-off character like that asshole imp guy at Loo Loo Land, that’d be one thing, but she’s not. She’s one of the main antagonists. This isn’t a “good vs. evil” story where you don’t need to worry about that kind of thing, Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel are supposed to be more than that. I’d be just as confused if Valentino or Vox, for every second of screentime they had, were doing nothing but going “haha rape haha prostitution haha tv is so cool” for 25 minutes and that’s it. But I digress.
I’m writing this because I was suddenly reminded of a character that’s basically what Stella could’ve been: Flowey. Flowey is just as volatile and agressive as Stella is, attacking you, killing you, and possibly having done countless genocide runs in the past with his own ability to RESET. Then, we get his backstory and find out who he used to be and why he’s the way he is. He’s an unfeeling sociopathic child. He was created with absolutely no way of feeling empathy because he has no SOUL. The child that he used to be is angry, longing for his past and his old friend, and was put into this situation for reasons that weren’t even his fault. Flowey is also a victim, but that doesn’t mean he can’t also be evil or do hurtful things. Whether or not you choose to show him pity or mercy is up to the player, but the fact that he’s that complex enough to warrant that choice is just part of Undertale’s writing. Hell, even Toriel is a better Stella than what Stella is in “canon”. I personally don’t like Toriel, but she does have depth to her (until the end where she just waltzes in and takes over the situation and no one does a thing to stop her because it’s Toriel and I guess everyone’s just chill with the traitorous queen coming in and acting like she’s in charge). Toriel comes in acting all sweet and nice, but is very clingy and definitely has issues with guilt and a black-and-white morality to justify her own actions. She’s not simply “ah, my child have some pie and we’ll be a family my child” 24/7. She’s a spiteful bitch, a hypocrite, and runs away from her problems. Again, this is because Undertale’s writing is (for the most part) consistent with giving it’s characters more depth underneath the memes and quotable dialogue.
Now, why am I writing all this about Undertale? Because it and HB/HH are on similar levels of writing. They both try to show more than just what’s at face value. Charlie is nice and sweet but will throw hands and has self-doubts, Alastor is everyone’s nightmare, but according to the comics, he does crave genuine interaction and is much nicer towards women (aside from Vaggie but my theory is that it’s because she’s not as feminine as Charlie or the Sheep Woman and far less easy to charm). So if Alastor, a mass murderer and cannibal who is more than likely going to do everything he can to mess with the Hotel’s success for his own entertainment, can have elements of good in him, then why the fuck can’t Stella? Oh, I know why, because Alastor isn’t interfering with the “romance”. I already didn’t like Stolitz before but Season 2 has nuked any chance of making me change my mind. This whole “romance” is being pushed so hard that it’s tainting the writing with retcons and things that just make no sense. Why would Octavia say “you ruined it” to Stolas in episode 2 if Stella was apparently just mean and nasty the whole time and Stolas was just soooo innocent? Why does the Ozzie’s song frame it like Stella and Octavia are victims of Stolas fucking up if Stella was always secretly the evil one and not Stolas? Why is Stolas ashamed if he was so proudly yelling about his divorce in front of her friends? Why is Goetia divorce a thing if the Goetia family looks down on it and sets up arranged marriages? Why the fuck is Stella just around and eating at the dinner table like they’re married if she can’t stand Stolas? Why is she ranting about Stolas being a cheater on the phone, if they’re separated and if she just doesn’t care about anything but money? And why the dickshit would Stella, someone who everyone is so fucking sure is only in it for her image, just blabbing about how shit her marriage is if that would just make her look like a loser who’s settling for trash? It makes no fucking sense unless it’s all just some poorly done retcon of earlier events. Hell, the pilot is supposedly non-canon, and yet a scene of it pops up in the new episode, so I can’t even be sure what’s true or not.
Sigh, but I guess at the end of the day, I saw this coming. They’re trying so hard to push Stolitz that the writing has to suffer for it. I’m not even sure I want to continue the series, if it’s just gonna become some genetic telenovela where everyone is so evil unless they wanna help Stolas in some way because he’s “such a victim”. I never wanted to have to write something like this and I sure as shit never foresaw myself reblogging critical content, but it is the way it is, I guess. But, that’s what rewrites and AUs are for, and I’ll be working on mine.
Anyway, that’s it for now unless I find something else to ramble about. Later.

Of broken things and the admittance thereof
I found myself wanting to write a follow up to the thing I posted yesterday, so here it is, enjoy :3
(I took the time to comic sans’d all of Sans dialogue in the google doc, forgetting it doesn’t work that way on tumblr, sadge)
**
The shade offered by the tree she was sitting under offered little to no reprieve from the sweltering heat, yet Toriel could not find it in herself to wish she could be somewhere else.
It was their second summer on the surface. Almost two whole years… But, somehow, she was not tired of gazing upon the big blue sky yet, and no skies were ever as blue as summer ones. The sun was almost unbearably bright, making it hard to glance up at said sky, and yet she did, squinting.
So blue. So big. So freeing.
With a small smile she looked back down at the scene in front of her. Her child, seemingly uncaring of the almost oppressive heat, ran around with unbridled energy and a laugh on their mouth, small arms holding on tight to the handle of the basket full of water balloons they’d spent the past solid five minutes filling at the small fountain in their local park. Following suit on long and gangly limbs the tallest of the skeleton brothers also seemed entirely uncaring of the bright sun beating down on them, making the off-white color of his skull almost shine as he threw balloon after balloon, making them explode in a shower of drops against the climbing cage that was serving as a divide of sort between the two teams.
“DO YOU CALL THAT AIMING?!” Undyne yelled from the other side of it with an almost manic smile, also pitching balloons with no restraint, a sweat covered Alphys trotting after her and holding onto their own reserve of ‘bullets’. Despite what she’d just exclaimed her aim really was not any better than Papyrus’, only adding onto the small bits of exploded balloons hanging onto the cage.
Toriel chuckled fondly. The entire idea of the water balloon fight was supposed to be trying to have fun while battling the summer heat, but seeing as neither team had managed to land a single hit yet…
Well, at least they were having fun, without the shadow of a doubt.
“ah, youth”
Her smile grew larger as she turned toward the source of that exaggeratedly wistful statement.
“Feeling old, dear?” she asked as Sans, somehow clad in one of his ever present hoodies despite the oven-like temperatures, sat down by her side on the plaid picnic blanket, his small skeletal hand clutching at an oversized plastic glass for dear life. She accepted the silent offer before it’d slip out of his fingers, and he seemed relieved as both his hands closed with a series of soft clicking noises around his own, far smaller serving of ice cold tea.
“I was born an old soul, you know that”
“Thank you very much,” she said reflexively before taking a sip, glancing at him with the furry arch of her brow rising slightly. “I wouldn’t say that. I know plenty of old people who’d join a water balloon fight… What you are is usually just called ‘being lazy’.”
“zing” Sans replied without any real sign of having taken offense to the teasing, the light in his eye sockets fixed on the increasingly more rambunctious fight in the playground, the tea rapidly disappearing in seemingly thin air whenever he brought the glass close to his everlasting grin.
(Toriel had never really questioned it. She had once been the Queen of all Monsters, after all, and often witnessing her subjects do things that would be apparently impossible due to their appearance had been utterly normal to her… But she knew that humans found just about everything about the skeleton brothers downright confounding. Just as she knew that said confusion brought no small amount of chaotic joy to the man sitting by her side.)
They fell into a comfortable silence as they slowly finished their tea, the both of them watching the seemingly unending war in front of them. Poor Alphys seemed just about ready to collapse, but she yet tenaciously hung on, not wanting to leave her beloved deprived of bullets, even if how long would Undyne last was debatable, her scales glistening under the sweltering sun. Frisk was also drenched by that point, likely a mix of sweat and the water from the balloons, and even if their smile hadn’t abated a single inch it seemed as if they were starting to also run out of steam.
The only one who appeared to be entirely unbothered and still full of stamina was Papyrus who, unlike his brother, was dressed in a more season appropriate manner with a colorful t-shirt and shorts, but Toriel knew it was only because Papyrus cared a great deal about being fashionable… In his own way, that was.
She had never asked if the two ever felt hot or cold, but she also had never felt the need to ask, not after witnessing Sans trudging through the snow that had fallen heavy enough to reach his collarbone just to go grab the morning paper, only dressed in shorts and a loose, faded shirt he used as a pajama, barefooted.
It was clear enough the two weren’t bothered by extreme temperatures much at all. She was a bit jealous, if she had to be entirely honest.
“better?”
“A little, yes,” she looked down on her already almost empty glass of tea, only a tiny speck of ice floating on the surface, at that point.
“i would’ve never guessed summer would affect you so much, what with fire being your element and all that”
“Well, I already run hot exactly because of that, so…”
“oh, yes, you sure do run hot” Sans quipped back, so fast he really gave her no time to finish her sentence. When she turned slightly to look at him, he winked. “in more ways than one”
“You’re shameless,” she replied, attempting to give him an unimpressed look, which was ruined by the small smile pulling at her fanged mouth. He chuckled with that almost rough baritone of his, letting himself be flicked playfully on the ridge of his not-nose.
“guilty as charged” he admitted with a small shrug, his grin having grown larger. Toriel, a smile now well-fixed on her, put down her glass to scoot closer.
It had been months since their relationship had turned into something more, and the initial time full of awkward little moments as they found a new footing around that small, ever shifting thing growing between them had long passed… But the thrill hadn’t. She still found herself enjoying that brief tickle behind her breastbone whenever they’d be close, as if part of her had never really grown away from the once young, naive girl who dreamed of finding love she’d been such a long time past.
It was nice, knowing not all of her had been worn down by her life, that part of her still retained that youthful optimism; and she only had Sans to thank for that, for helping her rediscover that part of herself.
Without looking at her Sans offered his hand quietly, and she looked down at it as she accepted it.
(Couldn’t help it, really. She still found the way his whole hand fit in her palm with room to spare just so dang adorable. Perhaps she’d never stop finding it adorable, which was just fine for her.)
A shrill laugh erupted not too far, and she took a moment to look at Frisk, now with shreds of colorful balloon hanging on their drenched hair, letting themselves be dragged toward the fountain by an ever excited Papyrus, the both of them apparently ready to stock up on more ammo for another round… But as if her eyes were magnetically attracted to him she couldn’t help but look at her companion once more.
Sans was quiet at that moment… But he often was. It was something she’d discovered by spending more time with him, sharing more mundane moments of everyday life: for all his willingness to crack jokes, greet familiar faces and merrily chatting away with the apparently endless amount of friends and acquaintances he seemed to have, Sans was a surprisingly silent companion when it was just the two of them.
Sure, they still spent plenty of time also talking about this or that, sharing terrible-yet-endearing jokes, but the quietness had grown larger between them as their relationship changed, and Toriel found herself not minding it in the slightest.
It was a comfortable sort of silence. The silence of those who trusted blindly into the shared affection, not needing to fill the quiet with empty words, sitting side by side as they each focused on their own thing, yet conscious of the other’s presence.
Alone together.
And she’d grown to realize there were… Layers to the way the silence would sit on her partner’s shoulders, as if in a way Sans was capable of conveying so much without needing to speak a single word. There were minute shades to his expressions, to the way the lights in his eye sockets shifted, growing larger or smaller, dimmer or brighter… And not to toot her own horn, but Toriel was fairly certain she was a downright pro at reading his seemingly fixed expression, by that point.
And what she was reading, in that moment, was a sort of pensive melancholy, a feeling that seemed out of place as they sat under a beautiful, bright blue sky, watching their loved ones having so much fun.
“Gold for your thoughts?” she inquired softly, observing how the lights of his eyes contracted slightly for all but a shard of a second, before sliding to fix themselves on her.
“...mh” he said after a long moment of silence “that seems like a cheap offer”
“I can be persuaded to throw in a ketchup covered omelet.”
“now we’re talkin’” Sans shifted slightly to angle his body towards her, eyes ever so slightly brighter. “two omelette?"
“Don’t push your luck, mister,” she replied, one furry brow arching slightly as he huffed a small laugh. “You’ve been pensive as of late, you know?”
“guess i have” he concurred pleasantly. “thinkin’ about a bunch of stuff”
“Care to share?”
She waited as his eyes peered up at her pointedly. Sometimes, when he looked at her like that, she was distantly reminded of the fact that many, both between humans and monsters, found his stare unsettling; she did not, she never did, but it was a fact she logically knew, nonetheless.
“...how to put it” he said after a long moment of silence. “i have been thinking about you”
“Don’t you often?” she teased, but gently, letting him know she was listening.
“yes, well- i’d imagine the way i have been thinking about you in this case is… a little different than usual” he continued, unfazed. “there is something i have been meaning to ask you for a while, now, but felt the moment was never right. but i guess there never will be a right moment for this sort of question”
Now Toriel’s curiosity was well and truly piqued. She tilted her head slightly, peering down at her companion in patient silence as he seemingly took another moment to properly gather his words, eyelights unfocused.
“do you really think you are… broken?”
Toriel’s mouth opened slightly. Then closed. She frowned a little, out of confusion.
“I’m not quite sure how to answer that, nor why you are asking?” she admitted then, sincere.
Sans looked back at her, his gaze ever so slightly more prickly, as if he was trying to peer into her very soul.
“you said that you thought you were too broken”
“I… Did?”
“you did”
“...I’m sorry, dear, I genuinely don’t remember ever saying that,” she admitted, trying and failing to recall when she could’ve possibly told Sans something like that.
“eh. can’t blame you. ‘s been a hot minute” Sans replied with a small shrug. “you said it back then, when you were supposed to teach me how to make a proper tart for the kiddo’s birthday but we ended up focused on… uh… other activities”
“Back when- Oh!” she said, understanding finally dawning on her.
That fateful early fall afternoon of months prior… She could recall many details of that day: how the window was open to let the still almost summer-like scent in, the soft light bathing her kitchen in yellow and orange hues as the sun approached its time to set… The way the understanding of what she was saying truly sunk in as he looked at her, how his small fingers had closed around her wrist, the gentle feeling of his round cheek pressing on her palm when he nuzzled it in a quiet admittance of reciprocated feelings.
How they very much did not even try to recover the squashed tart, allowing themselves to enjoy that first step in a new direction and making out like naughty teenagers on the kitchen counter until they were forced to stop by the very loud return of Frisk and Papyrus, and subsequent trying to explain why was cream smeared all over the counter -and Sans- once the two joined them in the kitchen.
She recalled many, many details… But not the exact wording she’d used. Apparently Sans did, since he seemingly spent a good chunk of time pondering on it.
“I still do not remember saying that, if I have to be entirely honest,” Toriel admitted, distractedly rubbing the pad of her thumb on the curves of his phalanges. “I guess I did. I guess… I did feel that way, back then.”
“did you feel that way, or do you still feel that way?”
She found herself once more short on words, thinking for a moment.
“...I’m not quite sure,” again a soft admittance, almost whispered in secret. “I guess I never really took the time to properly examine all of… That.”
“...yeah,” Sans replied, and his tone surprised her, in a way. He’d managed to cram so much in a single word: worry, a smidge of sadness and a sort of… Determination, perhaps. “tori, you know… i am grateful for all you’ve done for me. for… for being willing to lend me an ear to listen and shoulder to cry on. for allowing me to unload all that junk i carried and believing me. and i guess… i guess having all that also allowed me to see some things more clearly”
She said nothing, a gentle sort of curiosity settled in her chest as she let Sans take another moment to gather his words.
“you never really allow yourself to look inward, do you?” he said quietly, eyelights like pin pricks in her soul. “not to say that you are thoughtless- but you always put everybody’s needs before yours. there is always someone who needs something from you: the kiddo, me, Pap- heck, all of monsterkind, really. and i… i understand that is how you express your love. taking care of others is what you do, and you do it with a smile. it is never a chore for you, but… if you are always taking care of everybody, who takes care of you?”
“...You do,” she said after a moment, a small frown emerging on her face. “You always do. You make me breakfast and look after the house; you take care of Frisk when I am busy, you bring me lunch to school when I forget it and make me a tea whenever I want it without me ever needing to say a word-”
“but those are just… things that anybody does for their partner, yeah?” Sans interjected gently. “everybody would do that, none of that is really special or remarkable-”
“It is, for me.”
“and i’m glad you appreciate it, t. but i’m talking about something a lil’ different than that” he continued almost stubbornly. “do you think i don’t notice when you are feeling wistful? do you think i don’t notice how sometimes you just… fade away? and i won’t pretend to try and fully understand what you must be thinking about, although i think i can certainly make an educated guess… but those moments never last. when i ask you what’s up you never tell me. you just say you are fine and go right back to taking care of us. i’ve hoped many times that you’d tell me, but you never did”
It seemed as if Sans was hell bent on taking her words away, that day, seeing as Toriel found herself once more entirely speechless.
Was she really? Wistful? Fading away?
(She was. She knew she was. She never allowed those moments to last long, but she never could quite chase them away either. She’d just go along with her day, basking in the simplicity of the quiet life they had managed to make for themselves on the surface and then all of a sudden a thought would intrude her mind, making her wonder… How would things be different, if all of her children had been there too? If she’d never lost them, any of them…
But she had. She’d lost so many of them. And it hurt, it always did. But she couldn’t allow herself to just wallow in her misery; she had done that for too long. Life was different, now. She had Frisk, she had Sans, she had all of their friends. She had a life to tend to, and she couldn’t waste precious time with empty what ifs.)
“...i want you to rely on me” Sans continued in front of her silence, with a quiet resolution that carried a seriousness not often present in his voice. “that is what a partnership is supposed to be, is it not? two people on equal footing, leaning on one another when necessary. I’ve relied on you many, many times… and i need you to know that you can rely on me, too. you’re allowed to be sad, tori. you’re allowed to take time for yourself, to process all the bull you had to endure, to not always be the perfect mom, partner, friend… sometimes you can let others carry the burdens and responsibilities. you can be selfish. i want you to be selfish, when you need to be”
“I…” she softly let out, her voice breaking immediately as tears prickled in her eyes.
“its alright” Sans said, infinitely gentle. “you can cry, too”
And she did. She didn’t sob, nor let out a single noise, really, but allowed the tears to trail along her fur as she leaned in, Sans’ arms closing around her as much as his smaller size allowed it.
She wasn’t sad, per se. There was a mix of feelings battling in her chest, but most of all she felt… Bittersweet.
“...Did I really say that I was broken?” She couldn’t help but ask in a whisper, nuzzling ever so slightly against the curve of his cheek.
“you did- i reckon i shouldn’t be surprised you wouldn’t remember. you said it almost flippantly, and, well… i guess i am more than familiar with that sort of attitude, am i not? i get it, t”
“...And you’ve been thinking about it… All this time?”
“‘course i did”
Of course he did. Of course he did.
She leaned back so she could look in his eyes, smiling even as fresh tears followed the wet trail along her fur. She almost felt as if her chest could burst with all the emotions rising into it, along her flesh and bones, in the very air filling her lungs.
“I love you so very much,” she said, because otherwise she truly might’ve exploded if she’d tried to hold those words back.
“and i love you” he replied without missing a beat, ever so endearing. “promise me you’ll tell me when things get on your mind, from now on? that you’ll let yourself truly think ‘bout them?”
“...I promise,” she whispered, smile growing larger. “You might need to remind me, every now and then…”
“‘s fine. you’ve had to remind me to cut the crap plenty of times, it’s only fair i do the same, yeah?”
“I guess so,” she let out along with a small, huffy laugh. “I… thank you, my dear. I guess… I guess I needed to hear that.”
“no prob. and… huh. sorry.”
“For what?”
“for taking so long to actually say all of that. i wasn’t sure how to approach it-- should’ve just said it without twisting myself into a pretzel, huh”
“A pretzel, you say,” Toriel replied, her smile turning somewhat mischievous. “That is an interesting thought.”
Sans huffed out of his not-nose so loud she felt the warmth of it against her neck.
“t”
She laughed, unbridled joy filling every little particle of her being, and when she leaned in a bit more to start placing what felt like a constellation of kisses all over his face, she could feel a silent laugh shaking Sans’ shoulders under her hands.
Perhaps she was a little broken, but that was alright. Broken things could be repaired… And, sure, perhaps they would never be the same, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
With the right glue and under the right hands, broken things could become even better than what they’d originally been. And Toriel knew that the small hands that cradled her so gently would do a fantastic job picking up the pieces and putting them back together.

KNOWING YOUR PARTNER WELL CAN POTENTIALLY MAKE WRITING TOGETHER A LOT EASIER.
( REPOST DO NOT REBLOG ! )
NAME:  Spottie
PRONOUNS:  They/them
PREFERENCE OF COMMUNICATION:  Tumblr IM. I do Discord too, but I’m careful about giving it out!
NAME OF MUSE(S): Amy Rose right now, but I’ve worked on a ton; Michelangelo, Yoshi, Surge, Toriel, and just… a lot.
EXPERIENCE/HOW LONG (MONTHS / YEARS?):  Assuming we’re talking about just Tumblr, 2013—so, around 9 years. I was super into Ninja Turtles at the time I joined! Outside of that, over 10 years.
PLATFORMS YOU’VE USED:  A few forums, Tumblr, Discord, Skype, World of Warcraft, Yahoo Messenger, email, deviantArt—I’ve used a lot of platforms for this hobby.
BEST EXPERIENCE:  Hard to say! As far as Tumblr? Might’ve been when I wrote for Toriel! The Undertale RP fandom hasn’t been active on this site for a good while and I wouldn’t say I was particularly active myself during its heyday, but I have good memories of participating there and Toriel is still a favorite of mine.
RP PET PEEVES/DEALBREAKERS:  I can deal with a lot of writing quirks if the writer behind them is kind and relaxed. It’s important to me that this is a fun hobby for both of us and not a strangely intense obligation. Also, the best stuff comes when all writing partners involved are throwing in ideas, so feeling like I’m the only one excited to try things is tough for me to skid into.
FLUFF, ANGST OR SMUT:  Angst or fluff. I like them for the same reason (I like watching characters just...do character things), but I tend toward angst because angst is conflict and conflict is awesome.
PLOTS OR MEMES:  Both! I love spinning off of prompts (discovery writer!) as much as I love laying out possible story beats to aim for.
LONG OR SHORT REPLIES:  Doesn’t really matter to me! My own tend to go from medium to long, but I like short, dialogue-driven exchanges just as much.
BEST TIME TO WRITE: Evening and night. Occasionally, early morning.
ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE(S): Sort of. I don’t reckon we’re that alike in personality, but I think Amy and I care about a good amount of similar things, if that counts!
tagged by: The dash! I stole it.
tagging: All the cool kids are doing it. You, a cool kid, should also do it.

Undertale soulless endings
Tumblr media
I was also right about the name I choose belonging to the kid at the end of genocide, whose default name I found out is Chara.Īnd after all that, befriending everyone, saving the monsters, saving the flower, you think everything's gonna be peachy, but nah. Pacifist also explained some stuff, like why Undyne melted after I killed her. At least she's not my least favorite character anymore. One the flip side, I see why people like Undyne, at least outside of genocide and neutral. How anyone can legitimately like him is beyond me. So before you were Omega Flowey and tried to kill me the first time, then you became God of Hyperdeath or some stupid name and tried to kill me & my friends and Asgore, and you expect me to comfort you and forgive you? Get outta here with that mess. Speaking of Asrieal, they tried way too hard to try and make feel sorry for him. Hell, he didn't even do much the second transformation except become edgier. The only parts I died on were Lemon Bread and Asrial. After the bone and spear hell that was the genocide, I thought this one would be difficult as well. All the ending is, is Sans calling you saying the game has changed or something, then he calls you a dirty hacker, then hangs up. There's also a secret 4th ending, but to get it, you have to hack the game a certain way, and open the game. And while yes, Sans is a very cheap boss, the feeling of finally beating him is ooooh so satisfying. The constant grinding, the bosses that got one-shot, the 2 bosses who were unbelievably difficult, and the ending which was honestly unnerving, the whole route was a route that was reminding you that you are a bad person, trying to kill everyone. The whole point of the route was to make you not have fun. I also do think you missed the point of Genocide. Plus, the constant 4th wall breaking was genius. I always like bosses that are a constant power struggle. Plus I thought the fight with Photoshop Flowey was fantastic. In my Neutral run, I also killed Toriel, Undyne, Asgore (who was killed by Flowey) and Flowey, so my ending was also Mettaton becoming king. I honestly still think Neutral is the best route, due to being a route that has much less restrictions, and also the multiple different endings it can get. And that final boss theme legit gave me goosebumps, just because of how awesome it was. The story and writing in Pacifist was sooo good. I can see why Pacifist was your favorite. Rather then be a challenge like Undyne, it's just a long drawn out cheating boss. Well, Undyne was far in hindsight, so it's not as bad, but Sans fight is legitimately unfair. If you venture off too much, monsters might not spawn anymore and ruin it. The monster grinding sucks because you pretty much have to stay in one area. I thought it would be exciting because I like playing the villain in games if given the option, but that wasn't the case. Like the first time, I killed Torial, Undyne, Asgore, and Flowey, so Mettaton ending up being the king, but if I ending up killing him too, then Papyrus would be king. I also found out the ending is different depending on which bosses you kill. I like having the option to kill monsters if I want. My other gripe with it is that the game tries too hard to make you feel sympathetic to Asriel. Yeah it was still the easiest final boss, but it was also the best one. I really liked the music and colorful attacks, which was better than Flowey's ugly-ass photo cutouts. The final boss fight with Asriel was cooler than Omega Flowey. The no fighting thing is still lame, but the dialogue made up for it at least. Much to my surprise, I liked the pacifist route the best. If you break a rule, you get a warning, Break a rule again, and you're gonna have a bad time. Don't post too many advertisements too quickly.Ĩ. If you're going to talk about a spoiler, please use the "SPOILER" button.Ħ. Have at least some knowledge of the game, since I'm sure people will talk about alot of spoilers from the game.ĥ. In this hub, you can talk about the characters, the bosses, post theories, post strategies, share artwork, advertise your Undertale-related posts, and overall, just talk about the game.Ģ. This game is best experienced as blind as possible, so if you haven't played the game, play it, it's very cheap, and it's on Steam. It tells the story of a nameless child wondering through the Underground, meeting monsters and trying to escape to the surface. If you have lived under a rock, and have no idea what Undertale is, Undertale is an indie game released in 2015, by developer Toby Fox. So I thought I would create a hub, where people can chat about the game. So, yeah, I just wanted to make an Undertale Hub, simply because of it's huge popularity, and the fact a large amount of people on PMC love this game.

Self Indulgent Self Insert Fic, Part 2
Part one here
--
“Why’d you shoot fire at him?” I ask, partially to fuck with her and partially out of genuine curiosity. He hadn’t been attacking me, after all, so it was odd that she’d intervene. What did he do to get her to set him on fire just for being near a human?
Toriel purses her lips, and I note that her hands are clenched tightly. Must’ve been bad, then.
“He hides a wicked nature behind a congenial facade. Please, my child, keep your trust out of his reach,”
Oh, she’s just as formal in person! That’s honestly kinda cool. I’m pretty sure I’m the only one I know who’s ever used ‘congenial’ in a sentence, but for her it just seems natural.
“I definitely have more questions about that, but first, can you not call me your child, please? We literally just met,” Seriously, it’s weird. I know she’s grieving, but spontaneously adopting every child that falls without their approval or consent is kinda messed up.
If I manage to free the monsters, the first thing I’m doing on the surface is sticking them all in therapy. Seriously, these guys are worse than me, and I really don’t say that lightly.
Toriel’s face falls slightly, though she makes a valiant effort to hide it. (Seriously, what were you expecting me to say?)
“A-Ah, I suppose that is reasonable. May I ask your name, then?” Ok, people who are definitely reading this because I am 100% egotistical enough to assume y’all want to hear about my life. Listen up, because I’m going to say this as many times as the author wants me to. I know this is normally the part where I’d say ‘y/n’ but I want to make it clear that y/n is for reader inserts.
I am a self insert, which I know because no reader insert would ever have this much personality, those boring fucks. As a self insert, I am free to call myself Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way and dye my hair black with purple streaks if I so desire.
(I don’t, I really don’t, My Immortal is a fun read if you want something to laugh at but no way in hell am I emulating that MC in any respect other than our shared enjoyment of MCR.)
ANYWAY, back to my conversation with goat mom! I’m not saying my real name because I’ve resolved that if I ever end up getting isekai’d I’ll go by my middle name, due to its general awesomeness. (My first name is also awesome, but it has a different vibe and aesthetics are everything in fantasy worlds)
“My name is Solena,” I say, responding after a reasonable pause in actual time and a weirdly long one in mental time. Now, my name looks like it would be pronounced ‘sol-een-a’ but it’s actually ‘sol-ain-uh’ which I’m stating because again, I’m fully confident that these thoughts are being written down somewhere by some enterprising author who is also very likely me from another timeline because no one else in existence is fully capable of conveying the Wonder that is Me.
“Thank you for telling me, Solena. My name is Toriel, and I will be your caretaker while you are in these ruins,” Toriel says, conveniently leaving out the fact that she’d prefer to keep me in these ruins forever, probably because I’ve already demonstrated some leeriness towards her.
Now, I could bring up Flowey again, seeing as her explanation for fireballing him was more than a little lackluster and I’m still pretending not to know this world inside and out, but I already know stuff about Flowey and there are things I’m significantly more curious about.
“Cool! Toriel, got it. Hey, if you live in a cave underground, how did you get such a nice dress? Do you have farms down here? Livestock? Do you harvest fibers from animal monsters?”
Haha, you thought I’d ask more about the magic? Hell no! I’m way more curious about how society functions down here!
Toriel does a double take, her expression implying that she’s revising all of her expectations towards me. (Again)
“There are small plant farms in some areas of the underground. We have no livestock down here, as we were delivered to this cave system in a bit of a rush, but we do harvest some fibers from willing monsters, yes. How did you guess it?”
Let me tell you, the high I’m getting right now from those theories being correct? Very similar to what happened recently in the BNHA comic with Dabi’s true identity. I am living for this, just absolutely vibing with this new knowledge.
“Well, I don’t see how else you’d do it. How do you get the dyes?” Because I don’t see them having access to chemical dye, and it’s not like humans trash a lot of the stuff unless this is one of those illegal dumping spots, so what gives?
“Excellent question, Solena! There are professional tailors who transfer dye from clothes that fall from the surface! Many also simply wear clothes acquired from the trash, though mine are hand-crafted as befits-” She cuts herself off before she can let slip her (former?) royal status. I let it slide because I really don’t see a need to step on trauma landmines here.
“As befits someone who’s! Affluent! Anyway, we’ve entered the Ruins proper! There are many dangerous puzzles here, an old monster tradition, so I’ll need to focus more on guiding you!” Damn it, we’re at the first puzzle already? I completely missed the staircase room, which sucks because not only did I miss out on seeing one of my favorite rooms, I didn’t notice whether there was a save point!
Fuck!
I walk to the sign by the door. “Brave ones, foolish ones, both walk not the middle road. What’s that mean? I obviously get it in the proverbial sense, but it’s near this puzzle, so is it supposed to be a clue?”
It straight up took me until my second playthrough to understand that sign, man.
Toriel’s face just lights up. She looks absolutely delighted, and I remember that she’s always wanted to be a teacher.
“It is a misdirection! The sign tricks the reader into thinking about it metaphorically, when the answer is actually quite literal!” She demonstrates by stepping on all the buttons but the center two, before turning to smile at me.
“Oh, that’s genius! Because you’re supposed to ignore the tiles in the middle! It works as a puzzle while also having an easily remembered solution if you’re in a hurry!” It’s honestly my favorite puzzle in the game for that, even if you’re never given the opportunity to solve it yourself.
“That is exactly what I was thinking when I created it! It is wonderful to hear that the message came across to someone, even if my- my, ah, my friends had consistent difficulty with it!”
We continue chatting about puzzles as we walk into the next room.
Toriel explains the spike puzzle here and how you’re supposed to memorize the layout of the first room to safely traverse the spikes. She also explains that she locked the ‘incorrect’ spikes permanently in the ‘up’ position so that no one would get hurt, stating that puzzles should be fun, not dangerous.
Honestly, she’s giving way more exposition than she ever did in the game, probably because I’m a slut for knowledge. I only really half hear her explanation, though, because what comes next is going to be very important to knowing the kind of experience I’m going to have down here.
See, we haven’t gone down the hallway to the spike room yet, and I know full well there’s a Froggit waiting there to ambush me.
I have a few questions that this pseudo fight will hopefully answer.
One, are there options like there are in the game? Because if the battle system is the same, it could severely limit my choices when it comes to conflict resolution, especially if I have the same options as Frisk.
Two, do I have a narrator and is that narrator Chara? TwoA, do they have control over me in fights, as in some fics, or am I fully autonomous? TwoB, if they are here, are they evil or are they a person, because that’s also something the fandom intensely and frequently disagrees about. TwoC, can they hear my thoughts? I’m going with ‘probably not’ because I’ve made zero effort to exclude spoilers, but there's still a possibility and I need it confirmed. TwoD, can they hear thoughts deliberately directed at them? I hope so, it would be a huge pain to only be able to talk to them when no one’s around.
Three, are Froggits secretly cats because there’s a meme comic about that and I need it in my life.
With these thoughts in mind, Toriel and I turn down the hall, and the world goes black and white.

Deltarune and Escapism
Alright now that my hands have finaly stopped trembling and my eyes aren’t burning anymore, time to write my two cents about the new chapter and the reveal that the mysterious “Knight” who has been opening the worlds is Kris themselves, while being free of their soul.
I’m not surprised that people automatically assumed that Kris is doing it because they’re “evil” or what the fuck ever, because even back in 2018, without any whatsoever no mercy route available or true hints beyond a 3 seconds cutscene, people were already giving Kris the Chara treatment.
My personal thoughts about why Kris keeps doing it is actually very simple: they’re using the Dark World as a mean to escape reality.
Kris doesn’t appear to be living a particular easy time in their life. Their brother just went to college, and both from their internet searches and from general talks around town, it’s very evident that Kris misses him fiercely.
On top of that, their parents divorce seems to have happened very recently and they’re stuck in the middle of it (with Asgore using them as a bridge to give Toriel flowers, for example) and their social life doesn’t seem to be  the best: Toriel is pleasantly surprised in Chapter 1 to discover Kris is spending time with a friend, and by many they’re considered a weirdo.
So what happens when a teen who doesn’t have the best life creates a parallel “pretend” world were they’re a hero and have friends who love them?
If Dark Fountains are caused by a Lightner stabbing the Earth with a knife, it’s not hard to imagine Kris, who apparently has a personal knife, doing it on either  accident or curiosity. Back at the beginning Chapter 1, when the door “changes” in front of Susie and Kris, their instinctive reaction outside of player control is to take a step back, which could easily mean that they were scared, but it could also mean that they could have caused whatever was going on inside and were scared of seeing what it was.
The fact that the Dark Worlds have been so far used as escapist fantasies is also proved by the fact that all the Lightners who have been under are also teens who are having a rough time in their everyday life:
Susie is someone who’s considered a violent bully, has no friends and she’s hinted so far as not having a great home life, between the way she reacts to getting her own room in Ralsei’s castle, as well as her reation to Toriel being nice to her and also her accepting to sleep over while only pretending to call back home to alert she was sleeping at a friend’s house.
Noelle allows people (Berdly) to push her around because she’s afraid of standing up for herself and make her own choices (this is also highlighted by the Snowgrave route), and back home she has only a too busy, too harsh mother, due to having an (apparently dead) absent sister and her father stuck in the hospital with an unknown illness.
Berdly made his own life harsher by pretending to be something he’s not and now he’s slowly being crushed under the weight of adult expectations for him, and due to that he ends up taking merit for stuff Noelle does and speaking over her, despite the fact that he seems to genuinely care for her.
All of which seem to thrive in the fun settings of the Dark World, despite being in a situation of danger and the ups and downs of the plot (this without considering the Snowgrave route). It’s exactly why in the end Ralsei has to intervene with the Legend in order to convince them to return to the world above, while they were dead set on creating new Dark Fountains.
Now, Kris may be possessed most of the time during their time in the Dark Worlds, but they still seem to appreciate the good they get from it. It’s Kris themselves, without player control, who moves to save Susie in Chapter 1 and tells Toriel they have made a new friend. It’s Kris who changes the verbal inflection of some of the dialogue options the player uses in order to let others know they’re either joking or insincere.
It’s also Kris who makes the decision, outside of player control, to create another Dark Fountain.
Escapism is one hell of a drug, after all. You can’t blame the kids for wanting to be somewhere they can be themselves without being judged, or even be with people that irl tend to avoid them, or where a loving character who vaguely resembles your missing older brother is. So they make more worlds, for better or worse, because it could easily be that a fantasy world were you’re manipulated in your actions seems better than your actual life.
I say for better or worse, because a thing that the Snowgrave route pointed out to me is that there’s some levels of player control that Kris can experience. While you can say there are actions in the regular game when Kris does things out of their free will, in the Snowgrave route there aren’t. There’s no bit in the game were Ralsei gets to speak alone with Kris while the player is occupied looking at Susie, you stop getting dialogue options and instead Kris turns silent. Noelle also says that the voice who was ordering her around wasn’t Kris’, but rather something else entirely, which means that Kris, when obliged to Do All That Nightmare Stuff, wasn’t in any way in control of themselves. It could be said that while Kris was manipulating Noelle into hurting others, the player was manipulating Kris into believing that hurting others is all fine too, because the Dark World isn’t real, after all. It’s natural to want to hurt others. It’s just a game.
In which case, of course, Kris still wanting to open up a new Dark World the moment they’re out of player control takes a MUCH darker meaning.
tl;dr Kris is creating the Dark Fountains for themselves to escape their current life, and it’s not because “they’re evil”, but to keep having adventures with friends OR because the level of player control they’re experiencing makes them believe being violent to others in the world under is justified and fun.

SEAM!!!!!! SEAM MY FRIEND SEAM! MY CAT GRANDPAW HINT NPC SEAM
i love walking into the shop and listening to seam's- well, i guess reading- seam's dialogue more than anything else the atmosphere is so goddamn perfect and warm and starry prickly. MUSIC. the lantern music. and seam's little idle animations my gosh i would buy everything from this keep. also the fact that seam's changing just a little from chapter to chapter...? becoming maybe a little more hopeful... it's nice. that's really what i'm trying to say here. it's just nice
and YET. writing seam is NOT NICE. it is goddamn HARD to characterize THIS STUPID CAT *gently dunks seam's plush in the garbage can* BECAUSE THERES SO MUCH TO USE AND SO LITTLE AT THE SAME TIME AND SEAMS FULL OF CONTRADICTIONS AND AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA obviously this is in no way actually anyone's fault but mine
the whole "about JEVIL", especially "would i have found a little more purpose in my life...?"
you guys already know who i headcanon seam's best friends to be. i'm going to put the lancer fun squad in there too. i think kris has a little... closeness to every shopkeeper, given entering a shop is such a different experience, and kris is the only one in the lancer fun squad asking questions. on susie's part, i like to think she'd be invested in figuring out seam for her own reasons... and for ralsei, YOU KNOW, THERE'S A WHOLE THING. seam is amused by all of them canonically which awooga
i don't really ship seam romantically with anyone?
ditto!
seam having a short poof of a tail (like toriel and noelle) is important. super important to me. ALSO seam wearing riverperson hoods!!!!!
i think there should be more content of seam being nice :] by nice i mean there should be more seam co

Thoughts on Deltarune Chapter 2
Tumblr media
I wasn't even intending to write a Deltarune post, but here we are!
Have some extended ramblings/theorizing about Undertale, Deltarune, and the role of the "Player" vs character agency.
[Warning: full spoilers for ALL routes in both Undertale and Deltarune!]
.
Tumblr media
Frisk’s Agency in Undertale
So I'm not sure how common this is nowadays (I haven't been following Undertale theories for a while), but I personally prefer the interpretation that there is no "Player" as an in-universe force in Undertale. I think it's a far more elegant story if the fourth wall isn't broken.
I'm also fond of the Narrator Chara and "Chara isn't pure evil until Murder Route teaches them to be" interpretations too.
And, of course, the third plank bridging those two is that I don't see Frisk as a just a pure, innocent cinnamon roll.
Tumblr media
Because I like the story best when it's Frisk who chooses mercy or murder. It gives Frisk a much more complex character, if they are allowed to have the capacity for both immense kindness and immense cruelty. It even gives them an interesting implied character arc, if you take the natural progression path of True Pacifist > Murder Fun Times > Soulless Pacifist.
Just like Flowey, Frisk first tried to use their powers of Determination for good, but eventually they also grew curious and began to see the world as a game. And then they went too far and ultimately regretted it. Regretted it so much, in fact, that they were willing to sell their soul for just a chance to fix it.
After all, it's not you, the "Player," whose SOUL Chara wants. It's you, Frisk.
Tumblr media
I also dislike the idea of an in-universe "Player" because that implies that "Frisk" is nothing but an empty shell - on ALL routes. All of those heartwarming moments in the True Pacifist route? All of the silly Flirt actions? Yeah, that's not Frisk, that's just as much the "Player" puppeting some poor kid's body as the events of the Bad Times.
Who knows what Frisk is truly like if their every action - good or ill - is controlled by some unseen, eldritch force? Now Frisk no longer has any characterization.
And given that said force overrides Frisk's agency, then isn't the "Player" evil no matter which route you take? It's become a story where they only "moral" choice is never to pick up the game at all. Hrm.
Anyway, but that's all Undertale. Which brings me to...
Tumblr media
What the heck is going on in Deltarune?
Unlike Frisk=the Red SOUL in Undertale, we don't seem to control Kris=the Red SOUL in Deltarune. The game repeatedly underlines that the player only controls the Red SOUL, not Kris.
(Though, with stuff like the sound of the bathroom faucet only being audible when Kris's actual body is nearby - it seems like even when separated, the Red SOUL may still be perceiving through Kris's other senses besides sight...?)
Tumblr media
With Spamton's dialogue and Kris's reaction after the non-Weird NEO fight, there's also a lot more emphasis in Deltarune of Kris (and the rest of the party!) being puppeted by some other force. And that's on top of all the stuff in the first chapter highlighting Kris/the Red SOUL's lack of agency.
Because of all those hints, Deltarune seems to be much more explicitly pointing toward that dark interpretation of Undertale - that the "Player"/Red SOUL is removing Kris's agency, regardless of route.
Tumblr media
Indeed, I'm somewhat intrigued by the possibility that we/the Red SOUL might be forcing Kris to act nice just as much as we force them to act cruel. The way that Kris deliberately removes the Red SOUL in order to do some very suspicious actions might support that. As do some comments in Chapter 1, like characters in the post-Dark World walkaround noting how Kris is being less weird and more inquisitive than usual. Maybe Kris is the Knight and the Red SOUL is possessing them to undo their evil actions. Maybe the real Kris doesn't want to be friends with Susie and Ralsei at all!
Tumblr media
But taking that interpretation to such an extreme also doesn't quite fit. Why does Kris slash the tires on Toriel's car? The only reason I can think of is that they want to keep Susie at their house. And why does Kris create the Dark World in their house? Is Kris creating the fountains because they want to have fun with friends? Especially right after the chapter emphasized how great the Dark World adventures were, that seems very likely.
There are also some smaller details too, of Kris interpreting the Red SOUL's input with their own spin (like saying things sarcastically), or of Kris chatting in a friendly way with Ralsei which the player/SOUL can't influence.
So, I'm pretty sure that even outside of the Red SOUL's control, Kris genuinely does like their friends.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, there were a lot of hints this chapter that Something Bad happened to Kris, Noelle, Dess, and Asriel when they went exploring in the forest by the graveyard. Most likely, they went into that ominous bunker south of the town. Is that incident related to Kris’s current strangeness?
Tumblr media
And then, and THEN, there's the Snow Mercy route. That route seems to imply that the Red SOUL is both evil, and very much not Kris. Noelle says Kris isn't like themself, that their voice changes strangely, and she can still hear the creepy voice even when Kris is downed.
How to make sense of this all?
Tumblr media
A Theory on Kris and the Red SOUL
One idea is that as scary and zombie-like as Kris looks without the SOUL, they're probably a nice, if lonely kid who desperately wants friends after their big brother went to college. (And possibly after something traumatic happened to them/their neighbor.) They're creating the Dark Worlds for the sake of fun and escapism.
But the Red SOUL puts an end to Kris's happy fantasies. Indeed, if the Red SOUL gives up, "the world is covered in darkness." So without the Red SOUL, would Kris simply keep creating fountains...? (What ARE the fountains, why can Kris and theoretically any Lightener create them?)
Maybe in the normal route, the Red SOUL is trying to gently help Kris move on and accept reality in some way. At the very least, I suspect Ralsei is working toward this goal.
But in that case... that's a pretty strange way for the Red SOUL to go about it, forcibly taking control of Kris to the point that the kid notices and seems to greatly resent it.
But what if the Red SOUL didn't have a choice about this arrangement either?
After all, the Red SOUL's customized vessel was discarded at the start of Chapter 1... and it was placed into Kris instead.
Tumblr media
Here's a question: will Kris die if they're without a SOUL for too long?
Because there are an awful lot of moments in these games where characters break free of something they are bound to, but it doesn't end well: -Spamton collapses when his strings are cut. -The Darkeners can move freely outside their origin world for a while, but eventually turn to statues if they stay in another world. -Regardless of whether Berdly removes the Queen’s wires himself, he's exhausted and unable to fight any more after being under her control. -And when Kris takes the Red SOUL out of their body, their movements become slow and clumsy. Like it's a struggle for them to move at all.
Meanwhile in Undertale, post-Pacifist Asriel could maintain his form to say goodbye, but without SOUL(s), he inevitably returns to being Flowey.
So here's a theory: Kris died and/or lost their original soul. Perhaps due to some action/inaction on Noelle's part in the exploration incident. And as a last-ditch resort to keep them alive, the Red SOUL was somehow implanted in Kris.
(Also maybe Dess died/went missing at the same time...?)
And now, the Red SOUL the only thing keeping Kris around.
Tumblr media
But just like in Undertale, it seems like Deltarune SOULs have wills of their own.
Which means Kris's current state is similar to the Chara-Asriel fusion, or Omega Flowey, or even Frisk-Chara. Control of the body is shared. The difference is that instead of the SOUL we play representing the original owner/will of the body, this time the SOUL we're playing as is the intruder.
Essentially, this time around we are playing the role of the Chara-equivalent instead of the Frisk-equivalent!
(Though whether Kris themself is more of Chara or Frisk I’ll leave to other theorists...)
Anyway, while Kris likely wishes to be rid of the SOUL and dislikes this whole body sharing arrangement, they know they can't survive without it. And perhaps Kris being in a partially soulless state might explain why they do questionable stuff like creating Dark Worlds and slashing their mom's car tires in order to play with their friends. (Again, see also: Asriel/Flowey.)
But when the Red SOUL and Kris are in alignment, things go okay. The Red SOUL suggests commands, but Kris is willing to follow and seems to enjoy being with Susie and Ralsei.
Tumblr media
Let’s Talk About Snow Mercy
It's when the Red SOUL and Kris aren't in alignment... well. That seems to be what's happening in the Snow Mercy route. That kind of situation sure didn't go so hot with Frisk and Chara in Undertale, so I doubt this will end nicely for Kris and the Red SOUL either. At the very least, Kris seems to have been visibly upset after what happened with Noelle in this route.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(By the way, there are two other moments in Chapter 2 when Susie asks if Kris is okay - first after the normal Spamton NEO fight and subsequent discussion of what it meant and second after she and Kris approach the bunker.
Three different moments, but Kris appears to react similarly. Are all of these things related? The bunker, Kris being puppeted, and the events of the Snow Mercy route?)
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, here’s a contrast. Undertale's Murder Route seemed to exist for the sake of curiosity and power - either the "Player" or Frisk's desires, whichever interpretation you subscribe to. And the changes to the world were all logical consequences of that - because of the Fallen Child's rampage, friendly NPCs disappear, major characters fight you more seriously, etc.
But the actions in Snow Mercy are... weirdly specific, weirdly unpredictable. It doesn't come across as a simple power trip. Instead, Snow Mercy is a bunch of really bizarre actions that feel even more mysterious to the player as they are to Noelle and Kris. I sure wouldn't have guessed that backtracking to the trash heap and freezing a bunch of enemies would lead to new items spontaneously appearing and then giving Noelle access to a scary new spell. It's like something straight out of a creepypasta!
Tumblr media
The overall tone that comes across to me is that the Red SOUL seems to know what it's doing, even while the player is kept in the dark. And given Noelle's responses, it almost seems like the SOUL is trying to remind her of events/actions from her past, events which are obviously unknown to the player. All of which leads me to think that the Red SOUL has motives and goals of its own... so just like Undertale, this probably isn't a situation of the "Player" being a fourth wall-breaking force either.
The Red SOUL is its own character.
And I'm certainly curious to find out more about them!

Hello, I send you a greeting from Latin America ♡. These are my questions: Which AU do you like the most? What things motivated you to love Soriel? (Sorry for my bad English)
your english is fine, don't worry!!
I'm sure it's no surprise that Underswap is absolutely my favourite AU, I can't say every version out there appeals to me but I love the amount of creativity that's possible with it! Canonswap was super charming and working on my own headcanons has been some of the most fun I've had in this fandom ;v;
as for the Soriel question... apologies for how incredibly long this got but I have so much to say about them
I love both characters individually as they're my top 2 favourites, and I'm usually fond of my faves' close relationships in general, but Sans and Toriel's friendship in particular is just adorable :'> I don't think it's a stretch to say they're each other's best friends in canon (or at least non-related best friend in Sans' case), and I love the subtle positive impact they have on each other's lives.
on Sans' side of the ship, I've talked before about how a lot of Soriel hate will say he's too lazy to put in any effort for Toriel, and I think this criticism just... isn't even accurate to canon? he quite happily puts in the effort to visit her door day after day, he promises to watch over and protect a human for her sake (say what you will about how well he protects them, but he does indeed follow and keep an eye on them for the rest of the game, only breaking that promise if they become the worst possible person), and the implication that he buys snail-shaped pasta and tries baking a pie because of her speaks volumes. she does inspire him to put effort into things, be it for her happiness or to share the things she enjoys 💙
meanwhile I think Toriel's side of the ship is hugely underrated, even if it's understandable since most of what we know about them comes from Sans' point of view. but her side is arguably more meaningful in my opinion - Toriel is heavily implied to distrust monsterkind (which is a tangent for another day), so much so that every monster in the Ruins is too intimidated to talk to her and she's spent potentially a whole century almost entirely alone, until someone happens to knock on her door. she howls with laughter for the first time in a hundred years, she writes down jokes for him, gives him the recipe for her signature pie, listens to how much he loves his brother, and eventually trusts him enough to ask a promise that goes against everything monsterkind has been hoping for. I can't get over how much it must have meant for her, to feel able to trust another monster after turning her back on her own kind for so many years 💜
and the bond she has with him is so good for her!! so often the fandom will reduce Toriel's character to just Mother™, and while she clearly loves caring for children, she deserves the time to be herself around other adults too. and clearly no one brings out her fun side like Sans does - she's perfectly comfortable getting drunk around him, fighting him over her phone and goofing around even when it annoys others. they're so cozy and dorky together aaaa
all that said I don't consider any of these points about their relationship to be canonically romantic, but Toby sure does keep making a point of including interactions between them in other materials. like the pizza frisbee incident in the 1st anniversary Q&A, several moments between them in the 5th anniversary alarm clock dialogue, Toriel wearing Sans' merch in the intermission of the 5th anniversary concert, Sans implying in the Xbox-exclusive dialogue that he wanted to find a video game she'd like, the accursed "befriended" line that outright jokes about them being more than platonic, and just this past week I've seen people complain about them seemingly flirting via puns in Deltarune chapter 2. I feel like it says something when even people who genuinely hate the ship see it as Toby pushing Soriel romantically ahah
anyway I've rambled far too much so I hope that explains more than enough :'D my love for Soriel is entirely based on how much I adore their canon friendship, and my ideal take on their relationship if it became romantic doesn't really change much of that at all. ultimately they're both positive influences on each other's lives and I want them to be happy together, that's all 💕

I finished chapter 2!
I wanted to record some of my initial thoughts.
Firstly, this is a theory blog after all so, a lot of theories the community had basically got confirmed in this chapter and I wanted to say something about those!
Lightners have the power to create dark fountains! As well as the power to seal them. And Noelle has some special ability with this apparently.
"Darkness" means the Dark World. The "darkness growing" is the Dark Fountains springing up all over the town. (it feels like this is Gaster's doing? he's the one doing all of this? Perhaps.)
It follows from that that Entry No 17 is very much connected to what's going on in Deltarune. "Darkness growing", "shadows cutting deeper"? It's hard to deny. But it raises a whole lot more questions at the same time.
And now I wanted to talk about the last scene. Once again we got a spooky Kris ripping out their soul and, zombie-esque, shuffling around and pulling out a knife. It was revealed at the beginning of the chapter that the first time Kris did this, they just(?) used the knife to eat all of the pie from the oven. But this time it seems just a touch more sinister - they crawled out of the window into the dark and returned a few minutes later. Later in the evening Toriel phones the police to report seeing someone shambling around outside and slashing the tires of her car. Was that Kris? It could have been. If it was, it seems like Kris doesn't want to go back to school for some reason. Maybe I'm extrapolating without evidence. But the evidence is piling up that they really don't want to go along with this story, whatever it is.
The Dark World is almost definitely a Real Thing. There was some room for doubt in the first chapter, it felt like it wasn't yet established whether we saw an actual secret world in the cupboard, or if Kris and Susie were just playing a really long an elaborate make-believe game. But in Chapter 2 it's pretty much established that the Dark World is a Real Thing That's Happening.
The final moment of the game, when Kris draws a knife and the screen is covered by black billowing clouds, feels to me like Kris summoned a Dark Fountain. But if they slashed the tires of their mum's car it would suggest that they don't want to go back to the Dark World? I guess we won't know what really happened until the next chapter.
Can we talk about how skilled a writer Toby Fox is for a second? It was so evident in Undertale how good his characters are and Deltarune has more than lived up to Undertale's precedent. I can't even say what it is about his writing that makes it so good. Toby only needs a single line of dialogue to establish everything you need to know about a character, make you laugh out loud, and make you love that character with your whole heart all in one go. And the recurring characters are bursting at the seams with uniqueness and charm. The delight I felt every time Lancer made an appearance was unreal. Same with Rouxls.
Ok, with the theories over and done with for now I wanted to give my thoughts as a whole because dude. That chapter what just. Solid fun all the way through. The characters I loved them! Something about the Queen's voice just made everything she said 10x more hilarious. All the enemies were full of character and there were a ton of unique acts which much have taken so much work like wow. I can't even pick a favourite. Actually, maybe it was Tasque Manager, solely because the pun caught me way off guard. This game is a delight. All the computer-related puns were beautiful. Top notch. Mwah. Truly Toriel-worthy.
As for favourite NPCs, it's got to be Sweet, Cap'n and K_K. I love those guys. They just have a good vibe. Seeing them again at the end when everyone came to help out with the final battle gave me a lot of joy.
And the beautiful relationships he writes between the characters make you Feel things with a capital F. I was rooting for Susie and Noelle's budding romance with all my might. And somehow Toby even made me feel bad for Berdly. That's what I love about Toby's writing - you can never predict it. Even the annoying and arrogant Berdly gets redemption in the end.
One of my favourite scenes was when Ralsei talked about friendship, and how friendship isn't just being nice to someone, because no one's nice all the time. It's about being friends with all of somebody, because the nice and the not-so-nice bits together make them who they are.
Oh, and the music! Maybe that's another essay. But for now I'll say I felt like the music got even better this chapter if that's even possible. Toby Fox always puts music front and centre in his games and I could talk for a very long time about how cool that is because I'm a total nerd, but I'll save that for another time. The cyber fields song is the best one though fight me
Anyway that's all for now, we support Lancer and his three dads, see you later
