honestly i love every shen yuan trans hc I've come across so i kinda hc as every identity ever lol but for today I'll share my personal favorite one (?? which i relate to a bit bc i love to project
so thinking about shen yuan who was transmasc in his original life, even tho he's wealthy, and his family is loving they don't rly support him in that sense, and he dies and transmigrates before he can medically transition. He had complex feelings about getting gender envy from binghe and also feeling attracted to him, which he completely suppressed bc he didn't want to "seem like a straight girl" and he wasn't gay either, no way, he just admires binghe.
his username is also a way of compensating dysphoria and an easy way to get people to gender him correctly online, he also feels weirdy understood by airplane (who is also transmasc) which he will never admit, there's little hints here and there in pidw about how he views gender.
when he finds himself in sqq's body (i like both the idea of sj being trans or cis) he feels quite comfortable and at ease since he passes here and sqq's identity is respected. but despite all of that, when the wife plot starts hitting him he feels dysphoric again, which confuses him bc he's supposed to be "fine" now but these roles being forced on him make him uncomfortable. After the novel's events tho he slowly starts rediscovering femininity and the wide range of roles he can take, and he realizes he actually doesn't hate the idea of being binghe's wife, he accepts his own motherly instincts and stops repressing his complex feelings about gender.
sqq realizes he doesn't really hate the idea of being any gender in particular, but rather having it be out of his control and it being forced on him. When he realizes that, he's free to accept himself however he feels like being that day, he also develops a very "mix and match" attitude with gender, doesn't really care much about labels just about what makes both him and binghe happy. sqh is relieved that he's finally laid-back about it, but still teases him
bonus: transmasc binghe isn't the most popular but he's very dear to me, i like to imagine sqq teaching him everything he learned in his previous life

Do you know why so many people hc Shen Yuan as trans/genderqueer? Some posts in the svsss tag seem to allude to canon instances that inspire the idea, but I've read the 4 volumes twice trying to find clues to what people are talking about to no avail. Is it just a popular fanon thing? Not against people reading it that way, just wondering if I'm missing something.
Hi! I actually got a very similar question a while back but responded to it kind of poorly since I had a lot going on irl so I'll try again with some stuff I said before:
Ultimately it is just popular fanon and lots of subtextual reading- I don't think anyone could fully say gendersomething sqq is 100% intended and canonical, but there definitely are some instances that people tend to point to to support this hc:
Even beyond positioning himself as the “woman” (literary role) in his relationship with the skinner and dream demon arcs etc., sqq repeatedly compares himself and his experiences to women in a very frank way– I believe this is most obvious by his comparison of his pain to period cramps, but there’s also the significance of the Skinner mission featuring a demon which is described as an originally male demon that wears female skins but yearns for another male skin (Shen Qingqiu’s). You could argue this is just a reflection of transphobia in the story but I do think it’s interesting to note that this is sqq’s first mission, and comes during a period of time that he still clearly believes himself to be a man (Shen Yuan) wearing another’s skin (original Shen Qingqiu’s). And of course he continues to project his own feelings onto the female characters around him, which you could argue is due to his literary role becoming that of a female love interest’s, but a point that I find particularly interesting is that he also compares himself to Binghe’s mother completely unprovoked, something that easily (maybe even more easily bc lets be real why the fuck did he say 'Binghe if i was pregnant with you I would never abort you' there are so many other things you could say that arent th) could’ve been substituted for a male comparison for him using Confucian values of the teacher/student relationship relating to that of a father and son. Instead, he becomes the mother. He's a strange little Freudian specimen to be honest. Speaking of which if you would like to read a much more in depth analysis of topics including this with textual evidence I do have to recommend tshirt3000's Freudian reading of Scum Villain which can be found as a pdf here:
I hope this makes a little bit of sense! Tldr yes it's mostly just fandom but so much about scum villain is about gender and toxic masculinity and what does it really mean to be a man in a genre where your masculinity is a tool to attain power for your desperate search for unattainable reciprocated love in a hopeless world where you are promised only shallow sexual comfort to appease horny viewers that would discard you as soon as you begin to feel emotions other than rage. If Shen Yuan was a horse he would be a gelding because the castration mellows their temperament just so

Okay, hear me out. Trans Shen Yuan who hates his long hair. I know I made another post about Shen Yuan cutting his Shen Qingqiu hair because of imposter syndrome (which I still like), but I was thinking about the whole scenario and other possible reasons for him to cut it.
Don't get me wrong, I love the long luscious hair that just trails majestically down his back... but I'm also semi obsessed with a character having all these overwhelming emotions bubbling up and them just snatching their long hair and hacking that shit off.
I just love the raw emotion that usually comes with a decision like that.
Anyway, trans Shen Yuan who in his previous life spent years hiding his true self and having long hair because 'it was just so long and pretty'. After he comes out he goes with his sister and mom and he gets it cut really short. He never goes back after that.
Flash forward to him waking up in Shen Qingqiu's body and seeing the long hair. He's horrified to put it bluntly. It's not because he thinks men can't have long hair, but just because it makes him feel like he's back to being 8 and hating to his reflection. It just makes him feel really dysphoric.
The worst part is that he can't even cut it off because it would raise major red flags and be way ooc. He hates it so much. It ends up having him getting kind of depressed and not being very self confident because not only is he not in his body, but he has this long hair that weighs him down and seems to be slowly choking him.
He gets on with it for a few years, but his breaking point is when he has to push Binghe into the abyss. That night in the privacy of his home he drops to his knees and has like a full meltdown. He screams and cries. Breaks things and just trashes the place. He's cursing the system, cursing himself, and just having a really bad time.
I think either in a fit of grief and a need to just have some control over something he grabs his sword and chops his hair hella short, or after he calms down and maybe settles he calmly cuts his hair with his best pair of scissors.
The first one has someone bursting through his door the next morning (*Liu Qingge*) and finding him sobbing on the floor surrounded by his hair. He would get pulled into a suffocating hug that would just start his crying all over. Then he would get whisked away to Mu Qingfan.
The second one would have everyone gaping at his with misty eyes as he walks with his head held high as he goes on to hold everyone he holds dear even closer to him.
So yeah. Those are my thoughts. Also, after cutting his hair he would just keep it at like shoulder length and above.

its not wednesday but my wip is funny enough
It had certainly been… stressful when the original flavour had randomly been resurrected! Shen Qingqiu was tempted to bash The System in the head with the largest rock he could find, except the system didn’t have a head, nor did Shen Qingqiu want to take the risk of being sent back to his rotting corpse due to The System breaking.  But, despite all of the drama – because dear god, the original flavour was nothing if not the most exhausting person Shen Qingqiu had ever met – things had ended up okay! Shen Qingqiu kept his name and position! The original flavour had gone back to being called “Shen Jiu”, but refused to explain why.
Yue Qingyuan probably knew, since through The Drama, Shen Qingqiu had worked his butt off to fix their specific drama, and now they were both insufferable to be around. At least Yue Qingyuan seemed a lot happier these days. Good for him.
But in any case, there was one obvious problem. Putting the fact that they had different demeanors, different positions, and different names aside, there was one thing that wasn’t different about them: Their appearance! They were identical, because of course The System had no originality and had to make Shen Jiu’s new body look exactly like the old! How were they supposed to be differentiated when everything from their visages to their voices were the same?
Thus, Shen Qingqiu has now been tasked with helping find the Delicate White Yin Lotus.
Because, apparently the original’s idea was “get a woman's body”?

I came up with this because I enjoy torturing myself and others with tragic plots. Based on the line “Somebody told me, that you had a boyfriend that looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year.”
Probably best suited to a modern AU, LBH spots LQG at some kind of gathering. He’d heard that LQG had a new boyfriend, but something about the man beside him looks familiar. He doesn’t usually like interacting with LQG if he can help it, but he’s curious about this stranger. It’s not until he’s upon them that he recognizes the person and realizes his mistake.
Maybe someone in the circle tries to introduce them, but it’s with a shuttered look that Shen Yuan interrupts and says, “Binghe and I already know each other.  I go by Shen Yuan now.” And he holds out a hand to shake like he and LBH weren’t INTIMITELY acquainted before last year. I think LBH would still be in too much shock, faced with the love of his life dating someone else (AND BOY IF LBH HADN’T THOUGHT IT SUSPICIOUS WHEN HE HEARD THAT LQG WAS DATING WHEN THE MAN HAD BEEN AFTER HIS PARTNER FOR YEARS). When LBH doesn’t take SY’s hand, he retracts it and tries to explain that he had realized he was a man and he couldn’t pretend he wasn’t. He says he knew LBH was straight and so that’s what led to him breaking up with LBH last year. He did it before Valentine’s day, because he thought LBH deserved better than to go through a romantic holiday he loved when SY knew they would have to break up soon.
Now for the tragedy. LBH sees this man in front of him, and he’s still in love. It’s not that LBH was “straight” so much as it was that he was in love with SY. He was in love, and our dear maiden-hearted, romantic Bing-mei was planning to PROPOSE on that Valentine’s day. He was absolutely broken hearted when SY dumped him before he could, and barely gave any explanation. Worse than that was that SY more or less disappeared from all social media, so it was like the love of his life disappeared entirely. It would be one thing if he met SY again now as a single man, but he’s here as LQG’s BOYFRIEND which means LBH has no chance. He lost the love of his life and he wasn’t given the opportunity to do anything about it.

Any Way the River Flows
Alternatively: Help! I've Turned the Scum Villain into a Woman!
Shen Yuan survived the attempt on his life from the expired yogurt with divine intervention called his little sister. She was even kind enough not to make fun of his obsession with PIDW and introduce him to fandom while he recovered.
He does not survive the encounter with Truck-kun.
'System! System, what the fuck?!’ [User was assigned the most suitable host!]
In which Shen Yuan is trans and just as prone to overthinking as ever. There is truly no greater champion at 5D chess, especially against himself.
Preview:
Shen Yuan adjusts his mask as he steps off the bus, fitting it more firmly over his nose. It was a pleasant, if chilly, day and the warmth of his breath quickly steams up his glasses if he’s not careful. The sun was out after several days of cloud cover, leaving crisp blue skies he knew won’t last long, the weather report called for rain in the next few days.
There was worse weather to have to go out in.
He was returning home from a visit to his doctor. Finally recovering from a severe bout of food poisoning that had laid him out months ago. Too many long nights followed by putting off shopping until the last minute, and then getting distracted by a notification in his email.
Anger wars with shame as he remembers that forsaken ending and the resulting situation.
Deep breath in, out.
His doctors have been stressing the need to avoid getting worked up over small things. His sister would never let him live it down if he had another health crisis over that damn novel.
The only thing worse than how the novel ended was knowing his sister was the one to find him on the floor. Unconscious and apparently dying after ingesting expired yogurt of all things. If she hadn’t decided to check on him that day… if she had waited another week for their planned outing… He doesn’t like to think about what the scene would have been.
Shen Yuan will always be thankful for her intervention, but would have thought that she was too busy calling emergency services and the family to make note of his computer screen. He apparently wasn’t that lucky.
After berating him for his poor habits - his lack of food in the apartment, missing family dinners, not calling - she brought up exactly what web page happened to be in full view.
Proud Immortal Demon Way. Popular YY Stallion Novel. Incredibly long. Frequently updated. Absolute trash. The brand new final chapter that was only just released for the paid subscribers.
And the freshly posted comment by one Peerless Cucumber.
She was kind enough to lock his computer and turn off the monitor before the ambulance arrived.
Meimei had read the novel too. Well, at least part of it.
She had bailed shortly after the resolution of the Abyss plot line. When it moved into less cohesive storyline and plot territory and more into excuse for papapa scene territory.
That’s not to say she dropped the novel and left it all behind, never to think of it again.
No.
She was kind enough to introduce him to all the amazing sites where dissatisfied fans had taken on the task of exploring the story more thoroughly.
She introduced him to fanfiction. Condescendingly telling him he’d have nothing better to do during his time in the hospital bed. She was right.
Shen Yuan had, of course, known of fanfiction before. You can’t exist on the internet without having at least heard of it and he’s been to multiple conventions. Fan content is a cornerstone for many of them. He’d spent a good amount of money on unofficial merch.
He just hadn’t seen the point of exploring it before the absolute bomb of a conclusion. These were offshoots of the original, how different could it be?
The answer is very.
Despite familiar themes and characters, it was like a whole new world.
Every complaint he had as a reader, ones he felt were being shouted into the void, were obviously things that bothered others as well. Dropped plot points were explored in depth. Interesting wives that felt forgotten were given personality and purpose. Innumerable objects of ancient power were given history and context.
So many delved into the possible political landscapes surrounding the world, how they evolved to where they were the protagonist tore through. Focused on the numerous background characters and villains and gave them motivations and lives that were less one dimensional. Gave those supporting them their own reasons in a world that didn’t just revolve around the protagonist.
Admittedly, his favorites were still ones focused on Lou Binghe. But they gave him more meaning than a revenge driven papapa machine.
There’s nothing like distance to gain perspective. The entire experience has felt like a gold mine in comparison to the original trash.
The community has been extremely welcoming too.
An unfortunate number of people he interacted with recognize his handle, one he really should have considered changing between platforms in retrospect. It’s one thing when it’s mostly anonymous criticism of terrible stallion novels, quite another when people he’s starting to respect are using it. He should have left it behind in middle school where it belonged, but he’d gotten used to it and so had others. It was branding. And at least not as blatant as Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky’s own dick pun.
The fan authors on the sites are always surprised at Peerless Cucumber’s lack of vitriol when commenting on works, pleasantly so in most cases. He’s been quick to point out that he’s not paying them for their content, so he can’t judge it as if he was and most of them far outstrip the original work in every way already. And those he actually hates? He can just not interact entirely.
He’s also joined a few forums and chat rooms dedicated to the more factual side. Ones focused on helping each other find the obscure pieces of information in the behemoth of original text or getting feedback on their interpretation of passages. Trying to find lost threads that tie together hundreds of chapters apart.
He’s starting to make a different name for himself there. One not tied to biting critique and scathing reviews, but someone to rely on for quick and accurate information on the beasts from text. He’s being tagged more and more often in posts looking for quick answers on traits and names of obscure beasts that might appear in different locations in the novel. He’s even updated the wiki.
It’s fun.
He feels like it’s been good for him. A new way to enjoy the world of Proud Immortal Demon Way without all the stress and rage that came with reading the original every time he realized another plot point was being ignored.
He’s even regularly talking to several others on a regular basis. In a few months, he’ll even be willing to tentatively call them friends.
Shen Yuan might have, might have, also begun compiling all his answers into a single document for easy access. He may have also started expanding on that information with links between other creatures and what they might be based on. Some blurbs of what could be first hand accounts in the style of journal entries.
If you want it, write it yourself. Be the change you want to see in the world and all that. The reception of the few entries he’d shared had been positive. Enough to make him want to keep going
There might also be a slowly growing assortment of artistic interpretations of what those creatures would look like.
Meimei is the only one that’s seen the drawings and she’s given her seal of approval. He’s not drawn since his burnout from school. It was good to know he hadn’t lost all his hard won skill. His mother can never be allowed to know. She’d been giving him sad eyes to pick up drawing back up for years. If she knew that all it took was a shitty novel…
He very carefully doesn’t think about the also growing assortment of figure studies as he’s reread the beginning text.
Well, she’d probably just be happy it happened at all.
Shen Yuan stops before the next crosswalk, red. He rubs some circulation back into hands before pulling out his phone to check his emails. He can’t get too engrossed, everyone else is on the other side of the street for once, so he can’t use people moving around him as a prompt. But he can at least check to see if he’s been tagged in anything recently. It’s good to start formulating a response ahead of time if he can, or at least know how much is waiting for him.
If he’s lucky, there might even be some updates to look forward to when he gets home. He follows more than a few that use his contributions.
His email hasn’t even finished loading when the screech of tires causes him to look up in alarm.
It’s a truck.
Swerving towards him.
‘I’m not even on the crosswalk, yet.”

edit: found in the replies!!
there's a trans sy fic i've been trying and failing to find and its driving me nuts
i know it's by an author who has at least one other highly-kudosed fic, that's probably how i found it. in the fic, sj was actually transmasc which sy was shocked about upon transmigrating. then after the alliance sy starts going out dressed as a woman, totally for "disguise practice" to evade binghe, and not because of any gender feelings! this of course doesn't work, and bingqiu have a happy ending, with sy (either vaguely or fully, can't remember) coming out as transfem
does anyone know the fic?

Been thinking of trans Shen Qingqiu who after Shen Yuan transmigrates he realizes that 1) oh shit Shen Jiu is also trans, and 2) he hasn’t had top surgery
Because there’s an angst in the idea that Shen Jiu was so afraid of men that even the idea of of letting someone else know the secret he carries so deep in his soul made him want to either commit crimes or throw up-
And Shen yuan doesn’t know what to do. He’s all at once relieved and uncomfortable; relieved because suddenly the trips to the brothels make more sense in his mind- Shen Jiu finding comfort in women who understand his pains- and horribly uncomfortable because he is also trans and being back in a body with boobs makes him feel horribly dysphoric, even among all the other weirdness of transmigrating.
And so Shen Qingqiu goes to the brothels one night, a night where he’s tired and the binding Shen Jiu left is digging too tight into his skin… and he meets the ladies.
And how kind they are, knowing how to sooth the ache of his shoulders, how to heal the bruising around his ribs; knowing that he needs these hours late in the night, where he is surrounded by kindness and femininity that sees the man he is and allows him in to rest from the world that would look at him and sneer at the “wrongness”
Idk I think they should connect over being trans lol

Due to a glitch in the System, instead of Shen Qingqiu Shen Yuan is transmigrated into the body of wife #76. Thoroughly invested in NOT becoming said wife when that arc arrives, he immediately fucks off to become a rogue cultivator. Unfortunately the System won’t let him leave the plot entirely—like the original wifely goods, he stumbles on a wounded, unnamed cultivator. Whether or not there was an aphrodisiac/sex pollen/curse involved doesn’t matter, because months down the line Shen Yuan can no longer deny the fact that he’s pregnant.
Chaos ensues.
