Coming home from travel, just in time for Christmas, and ted has decorated your apartment, baked cookies, and all the other lovely Ted things -- just for you.
you wanted to let out a sob as the taxi pulled in front of the cobblestone side street, a mere hundred feet or so from your flat, from ted, from home. you weren't supposed to have been away for so long. what was supposed to be three day trip to the states to deal with a family emergency turned into a weeklong stay in kansas thanks to the many storms across the nation and shitty airlines.
going to your shared home state, ted was determined to come with you, he could see his family, see henry, and not have to be away with you. but with booking a ticket the day before a flight, you were lucky to even find a seat for yourself, plus he had important end-of-year meetings with the team's entire management team, you couldn't let him miss those for you.
you dreaded spending three days away from ted, so when that separation was extended by four days, including you missing out on christmas, your heart absolutely broke. your absence, even though out of your control, added to the dread you know ted was already feeling from henry not coming for the holidays. sure he would see henry in five months, and he was staying for the whole summer! but it wasn't the same. transcontinental parenting sucked sometimes, and this was one of those times, and you weren't even there to help it feel a little less sucky.
after a three-hour flight from KC to new york, a seven-hour flight from JFK to heathrow, and the thirty-minute drive from london to richmond, you were absolutely beat. you paid the taxi driver, wishing them a happy holidays before trudging to way to your flat, checking your phone to make sure you hadn't missed a text from ted. he still hadn't answered from when you let him know you had landed, not that you were surprised. it was 2:30 in the morning on boxing day, you begged ted not to wait up for you, insisting that he needed sleep after a day of celebrating with the team at the higgins' household per the tradition formed two years ago.
you carry your suitcase up the stairs, thankful that you only took a carry-on and not a checked bag, knowing the larger (and heavier) option likely would have resulted in waking up at least one neighbor. a small smile rests on your face when you notice a faint light coming from the crack under the door, ted left the entryway light on for you, of course he did, he was always thinking of you. but when you opened the door after undoing the lock, a small gasp leaves your lips when you take in the apartment. the entire living room was covered in lights, christmas lights strung along every wall and emitting a soft glow.
a vinyl of christmas classics played softly from the record player on your bookshelf, a barely-heard humming to the music made its way through the apartment. leaving your backpack and suitcase in the entryway and softly toeing off your shoes after hanging up your coat, you tiptoe to the kitchen, tears pooling in your eyes from what you see. there he is, the love of your life, in flannel pajama bottoms and a chiefs tee, his side profile on display as he stands at the counter next to the over, spooning cookie dough onto a baking sheet.
sensing your presence, ted looks up and turns to you, a smile growing on your face when he sees you, a glimmer in your eyes, "well hey there, darling." you look around the kitchen, seeing some decorated sugar cookies on the table next to some bare cookies and bowls of frosting, seemingly so you can decorate the rest together. apple and cinnamon fill the air, drawing your eyes to the stove where a pot of apple cider, your favorite, is cooking, homemade you presume. you turn your gaze back to ted, who has been looking at you this whole time, a loving look in his eyes, "wh-what is this?"
ted wipes cookie dough crumbs onto his apron before eliminating the space between the two of you. it is only when he places his hand on your cheek, wiping away a tear, that you realize you're crying, "merry christmas, sweetheart." you shake your head slightly, still a bit confused but also in denial that someone would ever want to do something like this for you, "but it's the 26th." ted swipes away one more tear before pointing at the wall you're standing next to, pointing at the daily rip-away calendar hanging there, the paper reading 25, "nope, you're normally always right honey, but not this time. see, right there, it says it's december 25th. christmas, not the 26th."
you turn your head to look over your shoulder, showing a tight smile as tears continue to run down your face as while you turn back to ted, "ted, you didn't need to do this, i'm late, you already celebrated..." ted shakes his head, holding your head in between his hands as he takes a step closer, placing his face right in front of yours so you are forced to look into your eyes, "i was around people celebrating the holidays, not even all of them were celebrating. but that was them, and i was happy to be with them. but my girl wasn't there, you weren't there, so no, i haven't already celebrated. nothing important happens without you."
ted's lips meet yours in a sweet kiss, both of you tasting some salt from the tears that had run down to your lips. though neither of you are bothered, you are simply happy to be reunited after a week apart. you concede, too enamored with ted and in awe of his loving act to argue with him anymore. you pull away slightly, running your tongue across your lips to capture your tears as ted rests his forehead against yours. "merry christmas, teddy," you whisper, a soft smile on ted's face in response, "merry christmas, sweetheart."

The World's Oldest Airline?
Recently, I discussed the world's oldest airline, KLM! You may remember this being a question on my recent survey! ...what do you mean I only had 101 followers when I posted it?
Tumblr media
I was curious if people knew this, so I asked about it on the questionnaire and it seems like people don't not. In your collective defense, most of these airlines are both very old and still in operation. Officially, Qantas is second oldest, Aeroflot third, Delta seventh, and American Airlines eighth. Transcontinental Air Transport, which I just rendered as TWA on the chart for brevity, would be 12th and TWA proper 19th, though it is now obsolete via merger into American Airlines. United would be 8th if measured by when the first airline which merged to become United was founded; Air France and British Airways would by this metric be even older than KLM despite their foundation in the 30s.
This is actually surprisingly contentious, because Avianca claims to be the second oldest via retroactively claiming the history of one of the companies merged to form it. The other pre-30s airlines still operating are, in order of age:
Czech Airlines (1923, founded as Czechoslovak State Airlines)
Finnair (1923, founded as Aero)
Tajik Air (1924)
Air Serbia (1927, founded as Aeroput but probably best known as JAT/Jugoslovenski Aerotransport)
Iberia (1927)
Grand Canyon Airways (1927, founded as Scenic Airways)
LOT Polish Airlines (1928, with its component parts being even older)
Hawaiian Airlines (1929)
LATAM (1929 - Specifically, the company founded as Línea Aeropostal Santiago-Arica, which became LAN Chile)
Aeropostal (1929)
Cubana de Aviación (1929)
Wiggins Airways (1929)
Tumblr media
The first airline to use airplanes was the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line, which was given a three-month deal to operate service between the two eponymous cities in Florida using the thing shown above. It only operated from January to May 1914 but seems to have been fairly successful as essentially a prototype for the airlines we have today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first airline ever founded, though, was actually Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft, or DELAG, which operated zeppelins both domestically and on transatlantic flights from 1910 to 1935 and was forced out of existence by the rise of the Nazi government just in time to not operate the Hindenburg. They actually exist today - rather, a company with the same name does, operating sightseeing flights in Germany using a modern semi-rigid Zeppelin NT airship.

On Eagles' Wings
Jon Bon Jovi x fem!Reader
Summary: You joined Jon on a tour of Japan, and you two are now heading home. However, your phobia of flying kicks in, and he comforts you in ways only he can. <3.
Word count: 1,754
Warnings: Fear/phobia of flying!
Tumblr media
I did not know what frightened me so much about flying. But whenever I stepped off the listed ramp and onto a plane, my heart raced so painfully hard that I lost feeling in my stomach and knees. My hands kneaded my pockets into hundreds of tiny knots and my fingers were sore from that said endeavor. My heart did not stop racing and my hands did not stop sweating cold moisture until I’d been in the air nearly an hour. Despite my fear of it, I flew very often. I found my fear worsened on long, transcontinental flights, when I knew I hovered above hundreds of feet of navy blue sea. I could not bear to think of it.
However, when I prepared to fly home from Japan, I froze solid before the entrance of the massive airliner. With it before me, and a throng of hysterical fans behind me, I felt faint. My vision began to swim and dark spots appeared that I knew were not there. As if it were through a feverish lens, I watched the band members hurry aboard after waving their fans goodbye. My hand gripped the handle of my suitcases so that my knuckles were white as snow. One of my bodyguards put his arm around my shoulders.
“May I take this please, love?” he asked, gently. I could barely hear his voice over the fans behind us.
His hand shook my suitcase away from me. An electric shock stabbed my whole body starting at that now-freed hand.
Behind me, I heard the clopping of familiar, heeled boots behind me, and the sound lured me around to turn. Jon was hurrying up behind me. He was dressed casually, wearing his dark blue, New Jersey pullover and gray sweatpants. He was wearing the most casual pair of heeled boots he had, but they were enough to make that clop sound, that- for some reason- made me weak. That particular morning, however, Jon didn’t need his glamorous, rugged performing clothes to look as attractive as ever. As he began to rush towards me, his voluminous hair shimmered and flowed over his broad, muscular shoulders. He was smiling his wide grin that riveted gentle dimples in his squared face. The navy blue color of his sweatshirt brought out the bright blue color of his shining eyes. With a toss of his head that played in my mind as slow motion, he waved his large, masculine hand towards the crowd behind us, and they collectively swooned. Seeing him, my husband, brought the feeling back to me, and I began to violently tremble. Behind Jon, two Japanese bodyguards emerged from behind his broad figure.
“Your luggage?” one timidly asked Jon.
Jon’s large hands skillfully gripped his suitcases as he stepped along towards me. He turned quickly towards him.
“No, of course not!” Jon grinned. He shifted hands again and patted the guard on the shoulder. “I can handle it myself. But I really appreciate it!”
He set his luggage down and shook the guard’s hand firmly. The guard’s timidness disappeared and he grinned with gladness. Jon reached into his pocket and relinquished a wad of American cash. He handed it graciously to the kind guard. I watched, and passion softened me. Love for my husband started to overcome my fear.
Jon hurried to me and, taking my hand, he waved off the crowd once more. “We love you, Japan!”
The crowd shrieked in unison, and Jon tucked his arm around my shoulders. My right side leaned heavily against his.
“You ready?” He raised his eyebrows at me, giving my hand a squeeze.
It was clear, by the paleness of my face, that I was not. As carefully as he could, Jon pulled me by my shoulders towards the airplane.
“Come on, darlin’, you’ll be fine,” he said, softly. “There’s nothing to it but to do it, really! And you’ve done it so many times before. You’re going to be fine!”
He brushed his large, rosy lips across the back of my hand, and a shiver ran down my whole body from that point. Quite robotically, I turned and absent-mindedly waved at the crowd. There was an uproar from them.
Jon raced up the stairs and gently pulled me along. Once at the entrance of the plane, he turned to me and took both of my hands gently. He was smiling- he never stopped smiling- and was coaxing me tenderly, “Come on, Y/N. You can do it.”
Once seated in the plane, on a spacious, foamy seat, my fear seemed to ease off. I did not completely start to relax until Jon’s hands were over mine, and he was right at my side.
“Where are the others?” I asked Jon, as he came to sit down beside me.
Jon grinned a lopsided, dashing smirk. “Well, somebody might have got you and your husband their own section on this plane.”
I smiled wide, and my heart fluttered. “Then, tell them that’s very sweet.”
Jon winked. “You and I need some time. Now, don’t get me wrong: I love the fans and everything but man, I get a headache after about five minutes of them screaming at me.”
He settled down in the comfortable seat beside me and kicked off his boots. His feet were covered in thick, wool socks.
“I’m sorry." I moaned. “I’m sorry I am so afraid of flying! I don’t know what comes over me, really. I just can’t control it. You’re free to feel ashamed of me.”
“Ashamed?” Jon sat bolt upright. “Ashamed of the most beautiful woman in the world? The smartest, sweetest, loveliest woman in the world?”
I couldn’t help smiling, but I tried to take it off and shrug.
“If you’re truly scared of something, that’s out of your control,” said Jon, wisely. “And I better not ever hear you putting yourself down for it, baby. You’re my brave little girl and I love you very much.”
I put my arms around Jon’s, and closed my eyes. “I love you more.”
John leaned his head over the top of mine. “I love you most.”
It was dark soon, in the time zone we were flying through. Hours had passed, and I was much more at ease. When we had been flying for three hours, through the dark, starry night, I stepped over Jon and went to the bathroom to get ready to rest. I scrubbed off the little bit of makeup I was wearing and changed out of my casual travel outfit. I dug through my suitcase until I found some of Jon’s sweats he had let me have. Through our year and a half of marriage, and our previous year of dating, Jon had given me so many sweats he did not want anymore. Half of my wardrobe at home consisted of New Jersey hoodies and oversized T- shirts that flowed down from my knees like a dress. I changed into one of those and went, tired, to join Jon at our seats again.
I stopped in the aisle and smiled. Jon had his pillow tucked between his cheek and his shoulder, and his eyes were closed. His perfectly shaped lips were parted over his milky teeth, and he was softly, but audibly breathing. My smile widening, I shook my head. The same, rogue rockstar the entire world knew and loved for his vocals and style was sitting before me, innocently sleeping. I sighed dreamily. I knelt before him and put my warm hands on his cheeks. As gently as I could, as not to wake him, I ran my fingertip over his square cheekbones, and cupped my palms there. I was startled when he grinned and slightly chuckled.
“I’m awake, you know,” his eyes fluttered open.
I retracted my hands quickly, and laughed. “I might have known. Your sleeping seemed too good to be true.”
Jon took my hands and put them back on his cheeks. “I was waiting for you to get back to sleep.”
My heart stopped for a minute altogether, and I stepped over Jon’s outstretched legs and feet to my window seat. I curled my arms around his and leaned my head back on him again. His wavy, inflated, blonde hair tickled my forehead and cheek.
“I wish you could see yourself asleep,” I said, randomly. “I know that’s strange but you would never believe it’s the same man!”
Jon raised his eyebrows. “Well, doll, do you like it?”
“I love it,” I said, indulgent. “You look like such a baby when you sleep. It’s adorable.”
I giggled, and Jon chuckled, as well. “Thank you and not a sneer.
“You are kinda funny, though, yourself,” Jon told me. “How you’ll get so scared over flying and you’ll be fine about an hour into it.”
His hand gripped on my knee. “You’re funny like that.”
I shrugged, looking out the window. The night sky was deep and smoky, but the stars were brilliantly gleaming, like diamonds hanging in space. It was a beautiful night, clear for safe flying, and beautiful for the eyes.
“It’s beautiful once we’re up here,” I admitted. “It’s kinda like flying on eagles’ wings…..don’t you think?”
I looked back at Jon, whose eyes reflected the sparkling of the stars. His face illuminated by a single ray of the moon’s shine, his face radiated silver light.
“Right,” he nodded.
He was smiling so proudly at me, although I said nothing special. I smiled at him once more, then sighed heavily. I leaned against his shoulder, sandwiched between his head and his shoulder. His golden hair covered me as if it were my own, curtaining my face. I gave his muscular arm a rub.
“Well….goodnight, Jon,” I said, nestling against him. I yawned.
As I rubbed my face into his sleeve, I felt his fingertip press under my chin. He lifted my face up to parallel his.
“That’s all I get, babe?” he asked me.
My face emerged from his mane of hair, and his hand brushed across my cheek. I closed my eyes as my lips touched his, and they stayed there for a long, holy moment. Had my lips pressed into Jon’s the remainder of my life, it may have never been long enough. His puckered lips spread apart in a wide grin- the broad grin that spread so easily over his squared face. Only centimeters from his face, his warm breath coating my own, Jon licked his lips in contentment.
"Goodnight, my little runaway".....
(P.S.- I am now tagging my mutuals who also love Jon/Bon Jovi- @the-darling-ghost-queen @axls--rocket--queen @greeneyezblackheart @jack-spawn @bad-medicine-baby @longlivejbj . Hope you don't mind, and sorry if it seems weird! I just wanted to show this to you guys! :D)

Aviation Pioneers Part 1: Howard Hughes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Howard Hughes, in full Howard Robard Hughes, Jr., (born December 24, 1905, Houston, Texas, U.S.—died April 5, 1976, in an airplane over southern Texas), American manufacturer, aviator, and motion-picture producer and director who acquired enormous wealth and celebrity from his various ventures but was perhaps better known for his eccentricities, especially his reclusiveness.
While making films, Hughes was also involved in aviation. In 1932 he founded the Hughes Aircraft Company in Culver City, California. On September 12, 1935, in an airplane of his own design, he established the world’s landplane speed record of 352.46 miles (567.23 km) per hour. On January 19, 1937, in the same craft, he averaged 332 miles per hour in lowering the transcontinental flight-time record to 7 hours 28 minutes. Flying a Lockheed 14, he circled Earth in a record 91 hours 14 minutes in July 1938. The following year Hughes bought a share of Trans World Airlines (TWA), and he eventually acquired 78 percent of its stock.
During World War II, Hughes’s focus turned to military aircraft, and his company had several government contracts, notably for the Hughes XF-11 and the H-4 Hercules. The planes ran over schedule, however, as did his movies, and were not completed until after the war. In 1946 he flew the Hughes XF-11, a reconnaissance plane, on its maiden test flight and suffered a nearly fatal accident. The Hercules, an eight-engine wooden flying boat intended to carry 750 passengers, was not finished until 1947. That year Hughes was brought before a Senate committee investigating war profiteering. In the highly publicized hearing, he sparred with Sen. Owen Brewster and ultimately prevailed. Hughes subsequently piloted (1947) the Hercules, popularly known as the Spruce Goose, on its only flight—1 mile (1.6 km).

top prospects only from canada and usa doesn't sit right with me ... Dvorsky, Reinbacher, Michkov and Carlsson should have been there. Not sure why Moore and Danielson were there if Perrault wasn't but I think the European guys desered to be there more than those 3 anyways
look, i understand how you feel, but it’s not like the nhl could control the airline that fucked up carlsson’s flight. i appreciate that they let the poor kid get some sleep instead of insisting he make an appearance for the cameras immediately after a transcontinental flight, a messed up layover, and a 13-hour drive. also if i’m michkov i’d much prefer to spend an hour with one of the teams that might control my nhl career for the next decade instead of answering media questions about who’s the worst roommate.

BSE over 600+ Knots
I accidentally deleted the post, but I just believe it was just BSE 2.0 hitting a sweet spot in the jet stream.
Even on shorter transcontinental flights between cities New York and Los Angeles, jet streams can impact the flight time by nearly an hour. On long-haul transpacific routes, these streams can be extremely helpful for both passengers and airlines. By following the polar stream, flight time from Tokyo to Los Angeles is just nine hours and fifty-five minutes, versus the 11 hours and forty-five minutes in reverse.
The 747's record 4h 55min New York to London
Last February, a British Airways 747 beat the transatlantic subsonic speed record thanks to strong jet streams. The aircraft made the JFK to LHR hop in just four hours and fifty-five minutes, a brand new record, flying at the speed of over 800 miles per hour.

The new Terminal B at New York La Guardia offers some great vantage points for photographing the action on the ramp. Here a Southwest 737 gets ready to pass under one of the passenger skyways that connect the landside terminal with the gate areas. ⁣ ⁣ There’s an old saying about the prior “Big Three” American large airframe manufacturers from years ago- Lockheed was into systems, Douglas was into structures, and Boeing was into aerodynamics. ⁣ ⁣ If there’s one thing that proves Boeing’s abilities in aerodynamics, it would have to be the wing of the 737NG- in fact, I’d argue that the 737NG’s wing is one of the most unheralded aerodynamic marvels of modern transport, not because of what it can do but how it transformed what was a slow, small, short-haul jet in the 737-100/200 to the performer that the NG line is today, capable of transcontinental and transoceanic flight.⁣ ⁣ Contrary to common belief, compared to the Classics, the NG’s wing is all new with a supercritical airfoil derived from the same work that led to the 777’s wing. It’s deeper in chord, longer span with lower wing loading. The inspar wing box is larger as well which allows more fuel. ⁣ ⁣ Over the 737-300, the 737-700 gains 4000 feet in service ceiling and depending upon where you look and the flight profile, 800 miles more range and all for a higher speed and less drag. When the 737NG was developed, it was stuck with a handicapped engine- the short landing gear meant that the new CFM56 versions for the NG couldn’t be as efficient as possible from larger fans like the CFM56s on the A320 family. ⁣ ⁣ This handicap I’d argue was offset handily by the 737NG wing design.⁣ ⁣ #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #LGA #LaGuardia #NewYork #NYC #airport #planespotting #instaplane ⁣ #Boeing #737 #Southwest #Airlines #SWApic⁣ ⁣ #instagramaviation #splendid_transport #instaaviation #aviationlovers #aviationphotography #flight ⁣ #AvGeeksAero #AvgeekSchoolofKnowledge #AvGeekNation (at La Guardia (LGA) - New York City) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf-mVZbMCTu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
