Plant of the Day
Saturday 21 January 2023
The impressive fern Cibotium schiedei (Mexican tree fern) is found growing in the damp cloud and montane forests of southeastern Mexico. This tropical species slowly reaches a height of 3–5 metres with a trunk covered with hairs. Here it is a feature of the Cambridge Botanic Garden Fern House, UK.

There are two main kinds of treefern around here: rough and soft. They are well named, for the simplest way to distinguish the two is to feel the bases of their fronds. The rough treefern’s, Cyathea australis, is covered in warty bumps and feels almost like sandpaper. However, as you descend into the deeper, wetter valleys, you start to see the soft treeferns, Dicksonia antarctica. These are smooth and covered in long, soft hairs at the base, like a horse’s mane or something ...
These soft teddy-bear like beings also tend to have more clingers-on (epiphytes) than the cyathea. One such is illustrated below: a Mother Spleenwort, Asplenium gracillimum. The spore cups (sori) under the leaves are pouch-like.

#1944 - Leycesteria formosa - Himalayan Honeysuckle
Tumblr media
AKA, at least in English, as pheasant berry, pheasant-eye, spiderwort, whistle stick,  granny's curls, partridge berry, chocolate berry, shrimp plant/flower, treacle tree/berry,  flowering nutmeg, Himalaya nutmeg, Elisha's tears, Cape fuchsia, and Symphoricarpos rivularis. I’ll cover one of the local names in its home range below.
Those last few common names are particularly egregious nonsense - the plant is completely unrelated to nutmeg or to the fuchsia, and the entire family is unknown to Sub-Sharan Africa. And ‘Eilsha’s Tears is a corruption of Leycesteria. which was coined by the one-time director of Calcutta’s Royal Botanic Garden Nathaniel Wallich in honour of his friend William Leycester, a noted amateur horticulturist, in about 1820. ‘Formosa’ doesn’t help, since the plant doesn’t grow in Taiwan, and is simply the Latin for beautiful.
Native to Pakistan, India, Nepal, both East and West Himalaya, Southwestern China, Tibet and Myanmar. A noxious invasive species in New Zealand, Australia, the neighbouring islands of Micronesia, and elsewhere. The berries are unpleasantly bitter when unripe, and possibly poisonous if reports from Australia and New Zealand are confirmed, but once soft and deep purple-brown in colour are edible and sweet, having a mild flavour reminiscent of caramel or toffee.
The plant was first cultivated in the UK in 1824, although reports at the time were a little disappointed - expectations had been raised by a plate in Wallich's Plantae Asiaticae Rariores, and while they might not have had Photoshop back then they certainly had artists who were a bit heavy handed with the coloured inks. After that they discovered that it grows well in cool dappled shade, readily colonising walls and cliffs (and the trunks of treeferns in New Zealand), and providing excellent food for pheasants. It’s also surprisingly resistant to pollution.
Local people across the home range had a wide range of names and medical uses for the plant. In Standard Chinese one name is 鬼吹簫 (Guĭ chuī xiāo)  meaning ‘ghost-blown flute'. That and Whistle Stick refer to the way the hollow branches sing eerily when wind blows across them, and one of the non-medical uses for the plant.

*
Horses and men go through the treeferns
Far from the tides
Far from the towers
A mist is advancing between the mountain and the sky. Silver drips hide the summits. The afternoon comes running. Birds quench their thirst for sun at the well, before the great summer rains that drown the roads. But the dawn always rises bright.

Plant of the Day
Friday 21 April 2023
This amazing fern, Culcita macrocarpa (tree fern, cushion fern, mattress fern), was growing in the entrance porch of the Edinburgh Botanic Garden, Scotland, welcome building. This large perennial grows primarily in the shade of the subtropical forests in Macaronesia, northern Portugal to north-western and southern Spain.

They don't call New Zealand the land of ferns for nothing. This is a mamaku or black tree fern (Cyathea medullaris) and like any fern, they are common where it is wet. This is not the whole plant, merely an unfurling frond, but the significance of an unfurling fern frond comes from it being the inspiration for a Māori symbol known as the koru. The koru symbolizes creation, growth, strength and peace. #plant #plants #fern #ferns #treefern #treeferns #newzealandfern #newzealandferns #plantae #pteridophyta #pteridopsida #cyatheales #cyatheaceae #cyathea #sphaeropteris #cyatheamedullaris #mamaku #newzealandplants #biodiversity #plantsofinstagram #fernfrond #fernfronds #koru #maorisymbols #maorisymbol #flora #vascularplant #vascularplants #newzealandtreefern #newzealandtreeferns (at Albany, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwyrssVBeNZ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=qkn7ioio3a2v

Winter hardiness is the most common cause of concern for tree ferns. The growing point at the top of the trunk is most vulnerable and mustn’t be allowed to freeze. Generally, the hardiness of a tree fern increases as the trunk gets taller and the growing point is higher off the ground. Tree ferns will take a temperature of -10C for a short period; prolonged winter freezing can do irreparable damage. I use a good couple of handfuls of straw plunged into the crown of the tree fern. I then pull up the fronds and tie them together with horticultural fleece. Don’t worry about damaging the fronds as these will be cut off later in the season when winter protection is removed. #treefern #dicksoniaantarctica #treeferncare #gardeningtips #gardeningadvice #mygardentoday #gardening #gardener #wintergarden https://www.instagram.com/p/BsKt4wBFGsj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12u57kzy63e2
