A brief rant about Sinophobia in fiction

I might be weird for getting worked up over this, but I am a bit bothered by the fact that whenever I see fancasts for Frank Zhang or Marinette Dupain-Cheng (and most likely other characters that are Chinese/of Chinese descent, but I used those two as examples since they're in my main fandoms), they're all Japanese or Korean, even though the characters are Chinese.

I really hope it's NOT because they think Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans are all the same.

Japanese people make sushi, Chloé. Cheng Shifu is Chinese!

Take some notes from Adrien, y'all. It's 2024.

By all means, considering how the demographics of fandoms like Miraculous Ladybug or Percy Jackson are pretty young, and Asian trends are popular among Western youth nowadays, I doubt that those fans actually have trouble differentiating between different East Asian ethnicities. However, I do think it dives into a deeper problem of how Westerners perceive Japan/Korea vs. China (not only the countries but also their culture, people, etc.).

I've seen a few videos on TikTok about women who are Chinese/of Chinese descent being mistaken for Japanese or Korean and being complimented on their looks when they wear makeup, while they are seen as Chinese without. Those Western strangers suggest that Chinese women/people are somehow less attractive than Japanese/Koreans.

Another example is how tanghulu, a candied fruit that originated in China (which btw are to die for! They're available at H-Mart if you're based in the United States.), popularized among Westerners when they're marketed as Korean (just because they are very popular in South Korea nowadays doesn't mean they are Korean).

The fancasting for Frank and Marinette is just another example of Western double standards for Japan/Korea vs. China, and how Chinese culture/people are seen as less than compared to their Japanese or Korean counterparts. It's racism within itself.

(There's also the issue of fancasting skinny actors as Frank who is canonically plus-sized, but that's a discussion for another day, feel free to repost this and talk about it if you wish)
