Episode 4 once again has my brain itching and not in a good way. I'm so infuriated and also perplexed and also very much just. What?? Did I just watch????

Part of me is like "Man, maybe I should stop watching this show. I dislike it it. Every episode takes down my hp permanently. my brain KEEPS ITCHING AND YOU CAN'T SCRATCH YOUR BRAIN WITH YOUR FINGERS UNLESS YOU DO SOME QUESTIONABLE SHIT THAT WOULD GET A MEDICAL LICENCE REVOKED!!!!" and the other part of me is like "You know what's fun? OP Magnus did NOT go all ‘eh 🙄’ when Jace was mentioned just for you to say there’s JaCe WaNk in this book like wth 😭😭😭 (like, okay, maybe Jace is a lil overrated in-universe, but there’s enough self-awareness of that and in-universe acknowledgement too, especially from Simon and Magnus’s POVs).

ALSO. MOST IMPORTANTLY.

Yes, Alec seems different between trsom and cofa, but like??? In trsom Alec specifically states that he wishes never to meet any of Magnus’s exes, and in cofa, he literally meets one of Magnus’s worst exes, in a terrible situation no less. Trsom is literally a vacation, a getaway. There’s a reason the tone of trsom feels so different from any other tsc book (I mean. Hot air balloon dinners and peaceful late night walks while holding hands? Soft dancing and long drives in a Maserati and two and a half whole pages of the softest lazy cuddling you’ll ever see and don’t even get me started on the ending omg). Like, despite the stakes, there’s still something casual and soft and sweet about trsom. Trsom is the literal definition of *slow motion double vision in rose blush* (Taylor Swift, always right). Trsom is Magnus and Alec having rose tinted glasses on, but during cofa the glasses come off and they have to confront the harsh realities of their relationship.

Besides, there was plenty of foreshadowing in rsom for their issues to come. Alec not wanting to meet Magnus’s exes. Alec comparing his life experiences to Magnus’s like they were books. Alec being insecure about Tessa. Magnus thinking about how he couldn’t tell Alec the whole truth about himself lest he lose Alec or even worse, put him in danger (thanks, Ass-hoe-dues 😑). And… did op even read the same book cause like… despite everything, they were still struggling to communicate about some issues in this book. Alec literally goes “ANYWAYS-“ in the middle of a conversation about Magnus’s immortality and his own mortality. Magnus deflects questions about his past so many times. Magnus makes some progress, of course (the fireside scene), but that gets stomped on by end no thanks to Shinyun and Asshoedues. Yay. 😭

Also, I thought the explanation for why Alec could reverse the svefnthorn’s effects was… pretty much self-explanatory?? He’s got the alliance rune, which lets him use warlock magic, hence he survived the stabbing. And he’s a shadowhunter, he’s angel blooded, which along with him being able to use warlock magic (and specifically Magnus’s magic) somehow let him draw the thorn out of Magnus. Idk how to articulate it but you know what I mean???

Also, OP, this isn’t the MCU where you have to watch like 2134 movies and shows to get what’s happening 😭😭😭 like, yeah, the knowledge may seem unnecessary to us but if someone for any reason decided to read only tec then it helps them know what’s happening? 🤷‍♀️ Like, yes all the series are interconnected but each series still manages to stand on its own and that’s kinda neat tbh.

Honestly I find the last post even funnier now. You would’ve paid money just to see that sex scene, op. And I think that’s more important, the fact that she didn’t write Malec’s first time as a lone one shot for charity. (Also, if OP had dug a little deep, they’d have found the first ever snippet of rsom, which was supposedly Malec’s first time but never made it into the book. The complaint about the ending is not baseless. The ending is kind of rushed and looking back on it, I could have written a better version of it. This was one of the earlier fics I wrote (see timestamp, Jan 2014), and so I will fully cop to the fact that people who complained about the ending (and yes, there was more than one) were not wrong

that being said, complaining about it was still a shit thing to do

IDEK why she thought Derek was a pussy in this fic and tbh I don’t care. I have received many complaints over the years that I don’t write Derek as the macho aggressive manly wolf man that he is. What can I say? I like him in soft sweaters with thumb holes, taking care of plants and being a gigantic softy. Is it OOC? Yeah, probably. I maintain that in different circumstances, he could become that way. His protectiveness could easily become gentleness. I love my soft mountain man. Don’t read my stuff if you don’t like it.

regarding it being nothing like DWS and her thinking it would be like DWS but from a different POV, the author’s note at the very beginning literally states: “Beyond the fact that it’s based off the same prompt, this fic is not related to DWS in any way. In fact, I’ve worked very hard to make it as unlike DWS as possible”

lastly, it’s possibly important to realize that almost five years later, I still remember this comment. I was able to immediately go to the fic and find it to post here. This shit sticks to authors more than a hundred nice comments. This is the stuff that makes fic authors stop writing. I’m old and grouchy and have attained a pretty thick skin over years of wank, but this particular comment came at about the same time as a very nasty review of TSOIP (“utter shite”, I still remember that one very well too) and although it did not drive me out of the Teen Wolf fandom, it actually did nudge me away from Sterek

Up to that point I had written TSOIP (Sterek-ish at the beginning, later full Sterek), DWS (Sterek), One Door Closes (Sterek), I’m Still up and Driving (Sterek), Tangled Webs (gen with a hint of Sterek flavor), and To Those Who Wait (Sterek)

The next two fics I wrote? Sympathy for the Devil and Something I Can Never Have, two of my first Steter fics. Plus Get Off (me), which had been mainly smut, became a more serious, in-depth fic.

(This was in part because I started to shy away from writing Derek, due to complaints mentioned above.)

I mean, I did get back into writing Sterek, probably in large part because I got the idea for the second installment of TSC, which was very popular, and then I got into Petopher, which often paired well with Sterek (like a fine wine), so yeah. It didn’t drive me out of the Sterek fandom. But it could have, very easily. Ten years previous it almost certainly would have, because believe me, before I was on anxiety medication, that sort of comment would have left me in a spiral for weeks. 

tl;dr a negative comment will fester inside a writer’s brain with a weight that a hundred compliments cannot compare to

Emma (aka BFF BF/Mascot of the Friendzone): the main character in the chronicles of Ty-day Friday. She really wants to fuck her best friend and it’s making the world explode. Probs got crabs from having sex on the beach.

Ty: (aka Ty-Day Friday*) in the best buddy cop relationship with his twin sister, Gravestone. Autistic gay. He has lots of siblings. His twin died. That’s a thing.

Livvy (aka gravestone): all I know is she died and she was liked. Liv - what an ironic name. 

Kit (Kitamine/K(it)leptomaniac): his name sounds like he’s part of a Swiss Army knife. I don’t know his role. Half human half shadow hunter. Despite this, he somehow bags Ty-day Friday.

(*if you don’t know, Tidy Friday is a private school British phrase we use for when someone grabs your tie and yanks on it so it tightens into a tight knot and you can’t undo it. We generally do it on a Friday at the end of the day in last period. It’s really annoying. It’s also mine and Matt’s favourite thing)

So I've only watched this last week's (this has been in my drafts for WAY too long) episode once (I usually do it twice but have yet to do a second watch and feel a rewatch will be in order at some point) but I have been rotating it around in my head since tscs mutuals first started posting their thoughts and I have SO MANY thoughts because this episode ONCE AGAIN packed soo many things in one go. Why don't they understand how PACING works? My GOD.

Anyway~

My initial thoughts before even watching the episode were "this is whack". Here's why.

This is episode 3.

Of 6.

We are halfway through. And our antagonist (Mad Santa) and Protagonist (Santa Scott) have yet to cross paths. And post watching S2E3, Mad Santa only JUST got his hands on some North Pole magic.

THREE EPISODES IN. HALFWAY THROUGH.

Carol is STILL trying to find the missing nutcracker. She has gotten no closer; her trail is so cold she's looking at JACK as a suspect (yes I saw the cameo too, absolutely delightful for us Jack stans on main)

Cal and Sandy are only JUST talking to one another about how their magic training is going, and are only JUST like. Diving into the drawbacks of being raised up North AND NEVER GOING ANYWHERE as well as the trauma that must be there from experiencing life in the real world, ENJOYING IT, and being yanked back to the Pole for the "family business"

Befana and Sandy. So THAT is a thing that was lovely then fell apart for no good reason--it was ONE MISTAKE and could've been handled better Befana, come ON girlie!

Easter Bunny being turned back into his EB form (tho tbh we should keep him as a bunny. Sorry not sorry, I have always been an EB hater on main)

Cal dealing with A) first heartbreak over Riley (which was stupid, more on that later) B) not wanting to be/do the Santa thing BECAUSE of a MULTITUDE of reasons he has NOT shared with Scott and C) the fallout when he realizes the vest is gone. He is NOT going to tell his parents at ALL. His whole existence practically rides on "I gotta make Dad proud!" and this deffs won't do it, but HEY! Maybe the writers will surprise me and he'll be OPEN and HONEST with his Dad!

Bc let's be real, ALL OF THEIR PROBLEMS COULD BE SOLVED WITH OPEN COMMUNICATION

I am off topic. Deep breaths. Whew. SO. We have all THAT to focus on.

Oh my god off topic again. SORRY. RIGHT. So, we have Sandra's magic to deal with still. Her mentor/mentee relationship with Befana. Cal's own magical struggles and his relationship with his Dad in terms of Mentor/Mentee. These kids need THERAPY, SOMEONE CALL NEIL

SO ALL OF THAT. IS GOING TO BE JAM PACKED INTO THESE LAST THREE EPISODES. AND I JUST KNOW (based on last season) THE RESOLUTIONS WILL NOT PAY OFF.

So yeah, thems the opening thoughts (with some watch thoughts leaking in, admittedly).

AS FOR THE EPISODE ITSELF.

OH BOY.

It's still very mid. It gives a lot of good bits but either A) contradicts them or B) gives them not enough time to flourish (see: Carol and Befana for A, and Cal and Sandra for B). It is also STILL ignoring its own continuity, and not just from the movies, but from literally the first two episodes of the season!

Did Cupid not say. One to two episodes ago. "Hey Santa, we, the Council, aren't really sure about this Cal thing? So uh. You've got three months. and if it's not working out. We're calling it."

And did Olga not say. At the start of this episode. "It's been THREE MONTHS since we escaped and we are NO CLOSER" yadda yadda yadda.

So THREE MONTHS have passed between THIS EPISODE, AND THE LAST ONE?

SO WHERE THE HELL IS THE COUNCIL? HELLO???

I actually thought that that would be like, the big crunch time thing for the series, you know? THE plot motivator. Or at least, one of many. Like I was expecting a montage and for each episode to have a month packed in and for the final episode to involve resetting everything to Scott's ideal status quo and defeating Mad Santa and Olga. Needless to say, I was SHOOK when they opened with THAT.

Olga and Magnus are fucking hilarious, full stop. I kinda want Olga to do a stab ngl!! Their whole dynamic has been interesting lol.

The Judy cameo was a fun Easter egg, but it's a shame they didn't give it a bit more hype, you know? That would've been fun. The Jack cameo (if we can even call it that) was ALSO a fun Easter Egg, tho I am much too mad at Carol's writers rn to be like WOO JACK. But you bet your ASS I saw that lil easter egg, lol. It's kinda frustrating? They keep throwing these lil cameos/easter eggs at us like it's an attempt to placate us or smth. Idk, I am tired and JADED and Don't Trust Like That.

They could;ve axed the dinner with Noel scene, cut tight to Santa training Buddy (Cal), and after that debacle moved on to sibling scene and having them bond. Like. There is substance and it is there but it is not being well executed. LET THE KIDS HAVE ROOM FOR GROWTH! (but dani! we have 3 more episodes to go! SEE MY FIRST LIST! THEY DON'T HAVE THE TIME!)

Santa asking for a jetpack and Carol being like "don't force your son up there to get over the heights thing" and then telling him to just say "I love you and I'm proud", GET HIS ASS (GHA Count Scott Edition: 10. And we're not even halfway through the episode). GOD. I wish Carol would take her own advice re: Santa and Cal and apply it to Sandra and Herself, come the fuck ON guys. DO BETTER.

DINNER WITH BEFANA (Scott: can't make it Carol: Gonna kill him. GET HIS ASS)

Cool idea, HORRIBLE execution. I am not a fan of how Carol was like "woo! ladies being ladies!" and them immediately we get a plotline of her being jealous of another woman. It's very. Token/preformative feminism. It's like they are checking items off of a list. I dislike how SHALLOW most of these subjects are in the series. Like, if you don't know how to handle something like that, THEN DON'T WRITE IT. GOD.

Like. When Sandy lifts the salt with magic, SUPPORT IT. Don't be like I NEED TO ONE UP IT. Also, interesting that Mrs. Claus. Despite being Legendary by marriage. Doesn't have magic?? I think she should. GIVE CAROL MAGIC 2k23. Carol overreacted and then so did Sandy and I just think that this whole La Befana/Mrs. Claus plotline could've been done better!

Especially Befana inviting Carol over and then Carol promptly asking if she should bring a broom, something something, witch stereotypes being a thinly veiled allusion to magical racism something something

It just didn't work :\. I haven't had time to like, enjoy them and they made Riley very, very. Unlikable tbh.

Putting Jack to shame! 273 counts of attempted upstaging of Santa vs how many billion counts of magical exposure? And an EB kidnapping? Bc I bet that'll be a thing posited next episode)

As if La Befana can't undo a spell (I AM ROLLING MY EYES)

They will make ZERO progress on figuring out who Mad Santa is and they will be very confused when he makes it to the North Pole next episode

I also tho wouldn't be surprised if they stretch Mad Santa getting to the Pole to episode 6. That seems on brand for how they treat pacing (as if it does not exist).

Everything about Mrs. Claus tbh. Carol, my belovedddddd~ freaking out about Buddy and and and having the RANGE, GOD, Elizabeth Mitchell fans, you are all SO RIGHT!

So basically everything that DIDN'T involve Santa? I'm kinda shooketh. Why was that episode so chill compared to all the other ones??? I obtained MINIMAL psychic damage (perhaps I have an immunity now??? WHO'S TO SAY!)

Santa's lines are all delivered so unenthusiastically and he just. GOD. You know how in The Christmas Invasion Ten looks at Harriet Jones, Prime Minister, then goes over to her assistant and is like "doesn't she look tired"? I feel like we could totally do that to Tomothy and just. End him. Then and there.

KRIS. He's really cool. Like I unironically enjoy him. He a little naive but BOY DOES HE HAVE THE SPIRIT! AND I LOVE THAT! Honestly, they could've had him be the next Santa and he'd be AMAZING at it tbh! he was very underused and that was a SHAME. Remember in episode 1 when we saw his dad for like 3 seconds and I thought "wow we could have a whole father figure angle here!" as if the writing in this show could actually decently do something like this

Weird choices: having the underlying theme of Betty/Olga fight being I WANT THAT TOY NO IT'S MINE was weird?? You could've done it differently to get them to the Workshop to chat. you could have had them call one another out with their toymaking skills? And go from there?????? IT WOULD'VE BEEN EASY TO DO

Weird choices: Bringing Kris up??? I LOVED it, he was perf comedic relief--like, if anyone in this universe should have loony toon powers (see: him appearing in the cell behind Mad Santa and everyone being like OH YOU'RE HERE TOO), it's Kris. 100%

IS IT BECAUSE OF THE "storied apex of the globe" COMMENT NOEL MAKES WHEN HE'S BEING A BAMF AND HYPING UP THE GNOMES? IS IT LEY LINES??? LIKE. WHAT IS THE EXPLANATION?

I would be FINE with suspending my disbelief if they had maybe just GIVEN THE CONCEPTS AND CHARACTERS TIME TO GROW!!! You could've rewritten the whole entire "we're stealing doing Easter!" episode and instead SOLELY FOCUS ON MAGIC. Have Befana react more mildly and go "this is different, come along" and bring Sandy to her lil cabin while they try to figure it out and THEN drop the "she was born at the NP and this is why she ca do such a powerful spell" and then have someone go what why?? Honestly, I'm just going to continue to believe that Charlie took over as Santa (because they did my boy so dirty), that Scott was not the first human Santa (wth? seriously), and that this was all just some fever-dream induced vision thanks to the Sandman. 🐸 I LOVED Learn About Loss, but apparently a lot of people didn't and the sole reason I gathered for that so far is that it was too Jem centered; it didn't have any tlh characters or secondary ones from other tsc series that got to shine or a new lgbt+ character that people could fawn about. Instead we got boring characters and the usual Will mentions who are becoming old. Funny thing, I thought gotsm was about Jem's journey, but he's treated like he's just there or an inconvenience.

AGREED !!!!!!! the only problem I had with LAL was that it felt shorter than the rest of the stories??? Like there was finally one that centred Jem a lot yet it was short?

and yeah you’re right I remember CC’s post where she was telling fans who are reading for Will and/or W*ssa to not read it because they get their time in TLH & GOTSM is about Jem. GHOSTS OF THE SHADOW MARKET IS ABOUT JEM CARSTAIRS OF COURSE JEM IS GOING TO BE CENTRED 

i will say one thing is that, and this is me being a salty jem stan™ so feel free to ignore this section, but I’m so Done™ and Tired™ with the fandom making GOTSM about the other characters (especially Will) when it’s a story ABOUT and FOR Jem. About is journey as a Silent Brother, how he’s navigating life through it, and the losses he experiences a long the way. If you want to read GOTSM for the other characters read their respective stories. 

Jem deserves his own series focused on him. Jem stans are only lucky that we’re getting a novella series. We probably won’t ever get a(nother) trilogy or series like Tessa, Will & Tessa/their children, Emma, Clary, have/will get etc. So to make GOTSM about the other characters it just angers me.

I know, and understand, that Shadowhunters is a show full of plot holes but please... Please put a little thought into it at least before writing review. Just read the one from TMI source because they come straight to my inbox for some reason and the reviewer is all, 'how is it at all okay for Jia to try and force a prisoner into helping her and then executing her anyway? Isn't that bad? Why would she?' Like my dudes... That is the Point. The Clave is corrupt and follows their own incredibly biased set of rules and morals. That's literally the entire point of this show jfc.

Which characters do you dislike in the shadowhunter chronicles and why?

okay so *cracks knuckles* under the cut because it got kinda long and if people don’t wanna see my negativity they don’t have too

jonathan/sebastian: this one do i even need to explain? like he’s just trash trash  t r a s h. There are some things that aren’t isn’t his fault i.e. the demon blood. But his actions, especially towards women, are still unforgivable. Plus his sister complex was creepy af. He kissed Clary knowing full well that she was his sister like ?????? ew. Plus he tries to r*pe her like ??????? 

kieran: i don’t like the way he treats people especially mark and cristina at times. He talks like he owns mark sometimes and i just don’t like his vibe. Also the whole whipping scene, I can’t forgive him for that.

zara: well another character that i don’t really need to explain, because she just treats downworlders and everyone not like her like dirt. 

alastair: i haven’t met him yet, but from what i’ve seen from sneak peeks and the way he talks about jem and what i’ve heard about his character and how he just is towards people and how he’s p much a bully I can tell he’s gonna be the first carstairs i dislike. Which is a shame because I usually love them and this boy is dirtying his family name.

nate: for betraying and deceiving tessa, for killing his mother because he found out the truth. For pretending to be in love with jessamine and using her.

mortmain: well this one’s kinda obvious too because like just his whole entire character. For everything he did and tried to do to tessa. 

bonus, since people might be wondering, a character i’m indifferent about:

will: i just don’t get his hype. Like i’m 100% biased over Jem I won’t deny that but before I dived into TSC fandom, and really came to figure out who my fave was in TID, i never really loved him but didn’t dislike him either. What I don’t like about his character was the way that he treated the whole him being cursed thing, and how badly he treated Tessa during that one scene (i can’t remember where it was but the one where he basically says to Tessa that she could have him only if she’s his mistress because shadowhunters and warlocks can’t get married that whole scene). I get it he thought he was cursed but what he said to her was horrible, and did he even apologise for it? I can’t remember.

i think that’s everyone, i can’t really remember much from the earlier books (TMI/TID) since it’s been so long since i read them (i really need to reread them). So there could be people i missed but characters who are either fan faves or are from TDA are more fresh in my mind so I can remember more specific reasons to why i dislike them. There are probably other character that i just dislike because of no specific reason, they just didn’t make me feel something for them to make me like them.

I blacklist a lot of characters that I don’t like so I never go out of my way, especially in this fandom, to bash these characters (if i ever do, which is really rare i’ll tag it accordingly so people who like/love these characters don’t have to see my negativity) so if you love them that’s fine, I won’t judge you for it. I just personally don’t like these characters. I hope this answered your question anon :).
