@dailyaoc event 01: get to know the members  —  the sun is also a star by nicola yoon
People spend their whole lives looking for love. Poems and songs and entire novels are written about it. But how can you trust something that can end as suddenly as it begins?

“SHE COMES CLOSE AGAIN and I barrel ahead, because apparently that’s who I am with this girl. Maybe part of falling in love with someone else is also falling in love with yourself. I like who I am with her. I like that I say what’s on my mind. I like that I barrel ahead despite the obstacles she raises. Normally I would give up, but not today.”

The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon [★ ★ ★ ★ ☆]
“ “I’m sorry about everything, about the whole history of the world and all its racism and the unfairness of all of it.” “What are you even saying? It’s not your fault. You can’t apologize for racism.” “I can and I do.” ”
Review [spoiler free]:
This book portayed soo well what’s it’s like to be an immigrant!! I realated a lot to the characters because of that. The love story was very cute but the themes introduced were what made me enjoy the book so much. I LOVED seeing the perspective of secondary characters once in a while!! Learning about their stories made me think about how we live our lifes according to our own personal motivations and don’t really think about how we may be affecting others in the long run (I have no idea if this made any sense please bear with me) which is basically what the book is about (? in a way ? idk that’s kind of how I see it). However, sometimes I felt like it all got a little too “fake deep” for me. There were times where I cringed at something said, at an awkward metaphor or just at the way the characters overthinked stuff sometimes... I also wasn’t satisfied with the epilogue ending. I felt like we needed more!!
(english is my third language and this is my first time writing a book review ever... please excuse this mess)

There’s a Japanese phrase that I like: koi no yokan. It doesn’t mean love at first sight. It’s closer to love at second sight. It’s the feeling when you meet someone that you’re going to fall in love with them. Maybe you don’t love them right away, but it’s inevitable that you will.

The Sun Is Also a Star
Tumblr media
Story time: the day I had my first date with Wife, I also had a job interview for my dream job. This was like a life-changing, move across the country, shot-of-a-lifetime job interview during the day, and then a date that night with a girl I was already falling hard for even though we hadn’t met in person yet. And I had this overwhelming sense that whichever option worked out, that was going to be the deciding factor that dictated what my life was going to look like forever.
I didn’t get the job. I got the girl.
OK, so I know I recently bagged pretty hard on the YA Romance genre with After, but then there’s the flipside - stories like mine that investigate the difference between fate and chaos. This movie is a thoughtful, interesting take on love at first sight that interrogates identity politics, the pressures of being an immigrant in America, and the nature of the universe. You know, the small stuff. Is there still room in this cold, dead, cynical world for some good old-fashioned romance? Well...
If it’s executed like this, yeah. This movie is incredibly charming, even if it has to lean into some pretty intense suspension of disbelief. The chemistry of the two leads (Yara Shahidi as Natasha and Charles Melton as Daniel) keeps everything moving along swiftly and sweetly. Nothing’s revolutionary here except for characters that have more nuanced hopes and fears and pressures than two suburban mayonnaise children, which is how so many of these narratives have been presented in the past. Natasha is an immigrant from Jamaica who relies on science and fact and the elegant logic of astronomy to make her way through the world. She and her parents are 24 hours away from being deported. She will stop at nothing to get her parents’ case re-opened and re-examined, so she is running all over NYC trying to stop a ticking clock. Daniel is a good Korean son with the heart of a poet, dutifully following the path to a future his parents have been dreaming about for him. He’s on his way to a med school alumni interview when he meets Natasha and all the love poems he’s ever written now make sense. They only have one day together in the city, and they have to decide what to do now that fate has brought them together.
Some thoughts:
The movie only works because of Natasha and Daniel’s chemistry, which feels instantaneous and magical in just the way it should. There’s definitely some YA novel wibbly-wobbly time things going on here (you didn’t experience ONE train delay?) but it feels like that kind of sun-soaked daydreamy time passing of a really great first date, so it works pretty well.
In a movie where two teens fall in love in a day and manage to fit all these activities including travel time into one 12-hour period, the thing I call the most bullshit on is this MTA announcement that is both clear and easy to hear.
This scene in the hair store - I don’t think I’ve ever seen black women’s hair showcased in a movie like this. This, I’m sure, comes from the author of the novel’s (Nicola Yoon) nuanced and real lived-in experience as a Jamaican woman.
This hand-holding scene, gosh. The Beatles got it right, man. I’ve got butterflies during this scene because sometimes, all of what love boils down to is the overwhelming feeling of “I want to hold your hand.”
You know who’s a truly great character actor? John Leguizamo. I don’t know where he’s been for a minute, but he’s fantastic here as the attorney trying to help Natasha with her case.
“Don’t you want the recommendation?” “Not more than I want the girl.” If this movie didn’t have such strong characterizations, that line would be so cringe, but Charles Melton sells the shit out of this line delivery.
How is no one in this cafe interested in this reunion happening right in front of them? I mean I’ve heard of jaded New Yorkers, but come on, he’s literally talking into a microphone that is presumably attached to speakers.
Did I Cry? Yes, when Natasha finally has her breakdown about having to leave New York and says, “I don’t want to go.”
I can’t decide how I felt about the last ending bit. From a romantic standpoint, obviously it’s swoonworthy. But I also think there’s something to be said for the idea that there are people who can change our lives in only one day. That one day is enough to experience something truly meaningful with another person even if we never see them again.
I appreciated a love story that felt real and magical at the same time because, frankly, that’s how I feel about my own love story. Maybe I’m just more sappy now as a result, but I thought this was a really lovely and sweet reminder of what that feels like when it’s first playing out.
