I’m not overly familiar with her story. I’ve read it once…

Unlike TDAI, TVWLM, AOFAG and TSPWL which I’ve read multiple times… I’ve only read IIHK, OTWTTW and WHWW once each…

My brain struggles sometimes with them because I write Hyacinth as a teenager… or a young child 90% of the time…

So until I’ve read, or gotten the audiobook and listened to her story again… it’s unlikely I’ll be writing anything other than some smutty stuff any time soon…

But once I’ve read/listened again… that may change

why don’t you like phillip? (full disclosure i’ve only seen the show and read summaries of the books, historicals are always a little dense for me to read, i’m just curious!)

so to start - i totally respect that there are PLENTY of people who do like him and love phillip/eloise and to be fair, TSPWL isn’t even my least favorite book because there are things in that book i do love

so overall, it’s just personal things that didn’t vibe with me that might vibe with you so i do recommend making your own decisions.

but mainly:

By the point I was reading this book, I was sick of the daddy issues. (Also fun fact, this was the last book I read before starting the tv show. I binge-read (and reread) the first five books in like three days haha.)

Phillip constantly thinks of Marina and her depression/suicide in TERRIBLE ways, and yes I get that it’s a historical and whatnot, but JQ does a terrible job with describing it and since it’s mostly from Phillip’s POV when it does come up, it just makes Phillip look horrible.

Phillip just makes Eloise into this... muted version of herself. Again, I get that it’s a period piece and stuff, but Eloise turns into Violet in this book (and we never really get more of her in any other books after to rectify this) and it’s really unsettling and makes me sad because while book!Eloise is nowhere near as outgoing and ambitious as tv!Eloise, it just felt... off. (Which is why, while I can respect the direction of the books, it does not feel right for tv!Eloise and how they’ve written her.)

Phillip neglects his kids. He loves them, sure, and is mainly terrified of his own body/masculinity (which I do think is an interesting character trait) but I never like a hero who has to be taught by a woman how to be kind and care for others/kids - especially his own.

Not to mention he gets mad at Eloise for wanting to TALK about their FEELINGS because he thinks that since they’re banging regularly that must mean they have a happy marriage.

Again... the book does a decent job resolving most of these issues... I just didn’t like how they came up in the first place.

I like romances to be about two people who make each other better versions of themselves, and while I think Phillip grew in this book, I don’t Eloise did (or at least not in ways that felt right to me, personally) and I hate that.

I don’t think the show is going to make us wait till the book-canon year of 1824 for Penelope and Colin to get together. According to RMB, Penelope and Colin meet in 1812 (a year before TDAI/Season 1 takes place.) However, Penelope mentions to Marina in season 1, that she’s “known Colin forever.” Considering season 1 takes place in 1813, it’s highly unlikely that Penelope considers a year to equate to “forever.” I don’t remember the show specifying how long Penelope has known the Bridgerton’s, but I think it’s insinuated that she and Eloise have been friends for years (and therefore in the show, Penelope and Colin have known each other for longer than RMB states.) Also, she and Colin are obviously friends in season 1, and according to book-canon their relationship couldn’t be described as much more than friendly acquaintances, till 1824. Throughout the first season, their friendship is established (and established as its own separate entity outside of Penelope and Eloise’s friendship.) Considering this, I highly doubt it’ll take till 1824 for show-Penelope and Colin to marry. (Especially considering it’s obvious he has already started to “notice” her, by the end of the first season.)

Edit: I should clarify, I absolutely assume that they aren’t going to get married till the 4th season. However, it seems plausible that they possibly change the year the 4th season occurs to be slightly earlier than book-canon.

Done reading Romancing Mister Bridgerton and while I very much enjoyed it (because it was overall quite funny, and Colin is adorbs, and Pen is a boss, and there’s SO! MUCH! Lady Danbury in this which is only a good thing) I think this is the first book in the series I read that, unlike Viscount and Offer I can’t see me re-reading (which is something I’ve been doing regularly since I finished both)...

Anyhooooooo.... bottom line is: that’s book 4 done now. Which means 3 down, 4 to go. (And yes, I still don’t care to go back and read TDaI...)

RoomPerfect – The World’s Best Room Correction

The sound of your speaker will be dramatically changed by the acoustics of your room. Measuring and correcting your speakers and room is the only way to remove these errors, so you can enjoy your music and films at their best.

There are many room correction systems available, all of which follow the same process. A microphone is placed at the listening position and a measurements is taken. Audiophiles spent great care choosing speakers and wanted their sound preserved rather than changed by the electronics used. The flaws in Lyngdorfs first correction system led to a new method of measuring the speakers and the listening room.

RoomPerfect starts by firing the mic towards the front speakers. This captures the characteristics of your speakers with the unique additions of your listening room. This allows the system to create a target curve that’s unique to your speakers and your room.

Additional measurements are taken across the full height, width and length of the room. The problems created by the room are a three-dimensional issue and only by capturing the sound throughout the whole room can its effect be completely understood and reliably corrected.

Bass Management

At the time RoomPerfect was being developed, subwoofers were becoming more popular and Lyngdorf saw that often the subs in the systems didn’t perfectly integrate with the rest of the speakers. This led to another unique feature of RoomPerfect, the measurement and correction of the speakers and the subwoofers together. With the correct time alignment, RoomPerfect ensures the sound of your speakers and subs play “as one” so compact speakers can provide convincing, full range sound.

Considering the thoroughly problematic/dubious transgression/SA Daphne committed against Simon in S1 (said transgression indubitably partially stemmed from Violet’s thoroughly-lacking ability to educate her daughters on the topic of sex.) Daphne giving her “the talk” seems somewhat fitting, especially considering it’s unlikely the Kathony wedding night script will follow TVWLM verbatim, (as they obviously gave Simon “I burn for you.”) Also, it’ll seem rather absurd to see SIMONE ASHLEYYYYY persistently and repeatedly deny her own beauty. I have a feeling Kate’s (causeless) conjured-image of his imagined “other woman” is likely going to be of Siena. Considering at the beginning of S1, Simon (who’s been noticeably/famously absent from society for YEARS) is somehow aware of Anthony and Siena’s affair, it stands to reason that by S2 gossip regarding the affair has permeated every corner of the ‘ton. Her knowledge of the affair seems likely even if Kate never sees/meets Siena (even if Siena isn’t the opera singer in the study.) Daphne is in the room during the scene in which Colin asks Eloise “have you ever been to a farm?” If she were the one to give Kate “the talk” it would be a droll and notable parallel to Kate’s comment regarding farms/livestock in TVWLM. I also hope that whenever Eloise and Francesca eventually get “the talk,” they’re provided with as accurate-as-possible information. (Since Violet is obviously inept at properly educating her daughters, it stands to reason that Daphne or Kate educate E & F. I just always disliked the idea that even after the destruction caused by Daphne’s lack of education, she didn’t feel it necessary to properly inform her younger sisters. According to book canon, E and F bribe a maid into telling them. I hope they’re given “the talk” before they feel it’s necessary to bribe staff into telling them.) Lastly, it would help to highlight that Daphne is aware she committed a malicious action towards her husband, and she’s trying to make sure that no one else is harmed by ignorance. I want to see Daphne apologize to Simon about the assault. I’ve always hated that both TDAI and S1 infer that she’s the victim of the situation.

On the topic of Siena: I am OBVIOUSLY a Kate x Anthony-shipper till the day I die. HOWEVER, if in S2 they gratuitously/superfluously villainize Siena or utilize the “Madonna–whore” and/or “not like other girls” complexes to compare Kate and Siena, I will (figuratively) pull my hair out. As characters, Kate and Siena exist as their own independent entities. Both women aren’t simply defined by the way in which they relate to Anthony. They are both autonomous beings, who’s existences aren’t simply predicated by their associations with Anthony. I’m so tired of seeing fictional and non-fictional female figures being needlessly pitted against each other, and/or dumbed down to simply serve as sexist archetypes.

I’d like to see Violet and B-H recognize the enormity of the responsibilities Anthony acquired at such a young age. Besides the formal responsibilities of his title, I’d like to see them acknowledge/appreciate the nurturing/paternal role he’s played/continues to play.

I hope we get to see the repairing and continuation of Simon and Anthony’s friendship. Considering both men (in obviously different manners) have struggled/struggle with loneliness, it would be nice to see them reconcile their differences and engage in clownish antics. (Also would love to see Edwina, Colin and Simon’s collaboration in getting Kathony together/forcing Kathony to face their idiocy.)

The glorification of S1 Eloise as some sort of “feminist hero” is inherently fallacious. Throughout S1, Eloise struggles with her own wants for self determination and autonomy being denied by the society she exists in. She’s a 17 year old girl who isn’t permitted to make her own decisions/way in the world. She wants to attain control of herself. And while her inability to make her own choices is a result of the patriarchal society she exists in, the strive/want of self determination/control is a sentiment experienced by ALL HUMANS. She isn’t a feminist hero because: her goal isn’t the societal promotion of all women, simply herself. She constantly belittles Daphne’s own goals/wants simply because they differ from her own. Seeing S1 Eloise constantly described as the show’s “feminist hero,” thoroughly annoys me, considering the amount of time she spends dismissing the promotion of other women, simply because what they want is different than what she wants. Intersectional feminism is built upon: the pursuit of social, political, personal and economic equality for all sexes. By demeaning Daphne’s interests, Eloise is complicit in patriarchal oppression. In S1 she displays behavior that could easily categorize her as a “not like other girls” character. I hope they change this in S2.

Hi, I already hate show Penelope so much, I stop reading when I got to her book...I was thinking about skipping and going to Eloise, because fandom kind gives the impression is a good one, but don't worry about spoilers, why do you hate book Philip? I just not in the mood to read and be mad about it, show him for as little as we know seems ok, but if is something I know I will hate I will skip too...If that is not too much to ask

Okay so here it goes.

Book!Penelope isn't bad. She's not fan-favourite material as far as I'm concerned but she's not unlikeable as a character. Colin on the other hand I found kinda annoying and their romance was just pretty meh. On the plus side there are some fun ton moments that feature Lady Danbury (plus Hyacinth and Felicity if I'm not mistaken).

Eloise's book was the biggest disappointment for me. Philip is easily the one male character in the series I simply can't stand. Like in the show, he's married to Marina but unlike the show she is a Bridgerton cousin (the entire Penelope/Marina/Colin storyline doesn't exist in the books). By the time the story begins Philip is a widower and the only glimpse of Marina we get comes from his POV, so everything you see in the adaptation isn't there.

In TSPWL Marina is described as a woman who was severely depressed while she was alive (to the point of barely being able to leave the bed or her room) which only got worse with the birth of the twins. I don't remember if she killed herself or there was another cause for her death but there was a suicide attempt that was prevented by Philip. The biggest red flag re Philip's character is the way he thinks of Marina. He basically frames himself as a victim whose life was ruined because of his wife's depression and harbours SO much resentment and anger towards her which just makes him detestable. He's constantly comparing Eloise’s energetic, bubbly personality to Marina's melancholic nature, including when it comes to sex, which is so uncomfortable and creepy because Marina was very obviously NOT a willing participant in sexual intercourse in their marriage. And I find it extremely hypocritical that Bridgerton fans will call out TDAI for Daphne's rape of Simon but it's crickets when it comes to Philip's rape of Marina. There's basically this part where he talks of going to her after the birth of the twins and having sex with her and though she “consented” (as if she had much choice being a wife in the 19th century) she was very visibly not into it to the point of her apathetic stance reminding him of a corpse or something. It gets even creepier and rapey when he gets angry at her apathy and feels the wish to be rough with her and hurt her to see if he'll get a reaction out of her. It's extremely uncomfortable to read and he STILL maintains this attitude of feeling sorry for himself by remembering how he felt disgusted with himself afterwards and never again came to his wife's bed. The whole self-pity reaches its peak in his love declaration to Eloise where he talks about how he went through hell in his marriage to Marina and how their relationship as husband and wife doesn't compare and she won't ever know what it feels like to experience a truly bad marriage or something. He's also a shit father who neglects his children to the point of not knowing they're being physically abused by their governess. And that too is described in a way that frames Philip as the victim because he supposedly keeps a distance from (:barely acknowledges the existence of) his kids because his father was abusive to him and he's afraid of turning out to be like him uwu.

Eloise was just a huge disappointment as a character. I mean the show obviously tried to frame her as a ~feminist~ and there are also these small hints of her rebellious spirit in the rest of the books....and then her “love” story comes along and you're met with an Eloise who has a major freakout when she learns of Colin and Penelope's engagement because she'll be the only one to be a spinster and she runs off to the house of a stranger she'd been exchanging letters with with no chaperone. Because getting herself compromised and saddled with a stranger is a better prospect than being a spinster. By the end of the book she's playing house for an asshole who views her as a sex doll and nanny to his kids. Another thing that I hated in TSPWL is what I view as the lowest of Violet's moments when she talks to Eloise before her wedding (or is it a letter?) and basically gives her a sermon to bite her tongue and bow her head and be a good girl in order to keep her husband and have a good marriage.

On the plus side there are some great and extremely entertaining family moments with the Bridgertons when all the brothers storm Philip's house demanding explanations. There's also some domestic Benophie moments and the Crane twins torturing Eloise and being little menaces is fun too.

If you're reading the books in order and you want to read something you won't get mad about I definitely recommend books 6-8. Book 6 is Francesca, who probably didn't leave much of an impression in the show because she's absent almost for the entirety of s01 and honestly just brace yourself to fall in love!!! Franchael is my second favourite couple in the series after Kathony, Michael is the best male interest in the Bridgerton series and you'll adore Frannie and feel cheated that the show keeps ignoring her existence. Then comes Hyacinth who is everything I was hoping to find in Eloise and more, you'll ADORE her trust me. She's my favourite Bridgerton. Add to that Lady Danbury (who has a soft spot for Hyacinth and their relationship is adorable), Hyacinth/Violet moments and LADY D’S GRANDSON as the love interest!! And Gregory's book is pretty cute and much fun too, and it has some great Kathony content that you'll love.
