Explosive Hazard Awareness Cards for Ukraine

A new project aims to increase unexploded ordnance hazard awareness with playing cards comes from Fenix Insight and Cold War Collectables who kindly sent me a pack. Each card features a photograph and designation of various ordnance ranging from small arms, grenades, RPGs, anti-tank mines to cluster munitions, Grad rockets and air dropped thermobaric bombs.

87. does your writing style change depending on the genre you write?

I don't think so, no. So far, I think practice is the only thing that has affected my style. I've only ever written intimate moments between couples under stress in the setting of military action-adventure. In the future I'm planning on trying to get myself to write some longer stories, so we'll see what happens to my style then. I think I'm going to have to ease up a bit and just let words flow where they want to.

58. what is the last thing that a fic made you google when you were writing it?

HAHAHA this is a great question. Let me consult my history ...

... It was "ruthlessness synonyms." For Rosary. I went with "brutality" instead, which worked much better for the sentence in question, since I'm such a fan of well placed alliteration.

The sentence in question: maybe he'd truly lost it, getting wet over bone dry brutality ...

I have an atrocious working memory, so I often look up synonyms when I know that something isn't quite what I want. More interestingly, one of my googles for that fic was "parts of a barn."

One thing I love most about writing fiction is that you have to learn so goddamn much about random topics that you had no idea that you'd need to know anything about. It's such a humbling, enlightening, and interesting process. Because I will go to every length to get the bottom of the iceberg established before I really put something together. It's often a messy process that happens all at the same time, unfortunately for my order-loving-brain.

I've been in actual barns many times growing up, but I always do my due diligence with the research part of a fic, due to the aforementioned shitty memory-for-details. I tend to remember emotions and not facts. I blame this on how many times I've been hit in the head.

2. talk about a notable time a narrative or character has looked you dead in the eyes and said “fuck your plan, here’s what we’re actually doing.”

LMAO I feel like this happens in some way every time. It almost always happens in sexual situations. I have an idea how I want the characters to interact, but it's never quite right, and I have to let them lead the show. I tend to experience a lot of resistance until I give up and just let them do what they want to do. The most notable time this happened was in UXO, between Ordo and Fi. I wanted Ordo to be pretty dominant, but turned out that Fi was going to run the show and let Ordo know what he was missing. I couldn't get the sex scene right until I just went with my gut feeling about it. Learned a lesson with that one. :p

At about 6:55 p.m., the State Fire Marshal office reported that the ordnance had been removed and would be transported to another location for detonation.The evacuation order was lifted and residents were notified that they could return to their homes. Authorities evacuated a Dubuque neighborhood this afternoon after a resident discovered what appears to be unexploded ordnance.

The Dubuque Fire Department was dispatched at 3:23 p.m. today to a residence on Sarah Street after a resident digging in the backyard unearthed “what is believed to be an unexploded (World War II)-era mortar round/ordnance,” according to a press release.The release states that all 25 properties in the neighborhood have been evacuated as a precaution and Sarah Street is blocked to all traffic. Maryville Street also is blocked from Kaufmann Avenue to Kane Street.State Fire Marshal office personnel are on the scene, and a specialist will determine if the ordnance is dangerous, the release states.Authorities urge residents to avoid the area while first responders assess the situation.

If you ever find yourself unexpectedly in a minefield, it’s crucial to follow specific procedures to ensure your safety. Here are some guidelines for self-extraction from a minefield:

Visual Indicators:

Be aware of signs that may indicate the presence of mines or unexploded ordnance (UXO):

Trip wires.

Signs of road repair (such as new fill or paving, road patches, ditching, culvert work).

Damaged vehicles.

Disturbances in previous tire tracks or tracks that stop unexplainably.

Day Nineteen, Part Three: “The Land of a Million Elephants”

Inside the temple itself are multiple statues of the Buddha

and various offerings, including a kind that is common in Luang Prabang: a cluster of marigolds bound together by banana leaves.

Lotus blossoms were also given there as offerings.

The back of the temple has an ornate Tree of Life design, beneath which various figures of Laotian folklore appear. On the lower left is the story of a tortoise who saves a deer from a trap, and then the deer saves the tortoise (who crawled into the hunter's pouch after he dropped it) by grabbing the pouch in its mouth and flying away. On the lower right, a cow persuades a tiger not to eat her calf.

After lunch, I went to the UXO exhibit. UXO stands for “Unexploded Ordinance,” a major problem in Laos. On display are cluster bombs

and “big bombs.”

The exhibit, which features signs and videos solely in English, makes it fairly clear who the intended audience is supposed to be.

Rather than ending today on such a tragic note, I’ll add two short accounts, one informative and one humorous (I hope). The informative account is about the name Luang Prabang. Luang means “capital,” and Prabang refers to one of those seven gestures of the Buddha I mentioned earlier. The Prabang pose is the “peace pose”: The Buddha holds out his hands urging combatants to stop and think about what they’re doing. A Prabang statue was the first Buddha statue seen in Laos, and the country’s entire Buddhist history originated here. So, Luang Prabang, loosely translated, means “Capital of the Buddha of Peace.”

The earlier name for the area was “Lan Xiang,” meaning “The Land of a Million Elephants,” referring to the number of wild elephants who lived in the area (now, however, being reduced to very few) and symbolized by three elements that appear commonly in designs in found throughout this part of Laos.

The funny story occurred as we were making our way up those 355 steps of Mount Phousi. An exchange went something like this.

GUIDE: We’ve had a very dry year this year. The farmers are all complaining.

ME: Not enough rockets at the spring rocket festival, eh?

GUIDE: What? You know about the rocket festival?

ME: Of course.

Now, the story behind that “Of course” is as follows. For my birthday this September, Sandra gave me all fifteen of Colin Cotterill’s novels about Dr. Siri Paiboun, a Laotian coroner who solves mysteries. Since these novels are on Kindle, I’ve been reading them during this trip. (You’ve already figured out the ending of this story, I’m sure, but I’m going to tell it anyway.) Last night at dinner, I was reading a section in the third novel where farmers were complaining about a dry year that reduced their harvest. They blamed it on not enough rockets having been sent up during the spring rocket festival, a festival intended to “wake up” the gods and bring fertility back to the land. So, my “Of course” referred to knowledge that I then had for slightly more than twelve hours.

What are landmines and explosive remnants of war?

In many of today’s conflicts landmines kill and mutilate more civilians than any other weapon. They affect far more civilians than military personnel and continue to do so long after the conflict has ended. Landmines and explosive remnants of war pose a serious threat to civilians, including internally displaced persons, whether during flight, during displacement or when trying to return home or pursuing other solutions. It is imperative that mine action is fully integrated in the overall humanitarian response.

A landmine is an explosive device that is placed under, on or near the ground or other surface, and that is designed to explode by the presence, proximity or contact of a person or a vehicle. Landmines can also be triggered by tripwires, command detonation and other methods, or can self-detonate with the passage of time. They are sometimes booby-trapped by anti-handling devices to make their removal more difficult. Landmines are usually camouflaged and can be difficult to detect and avoid. They are often laid in patterns to create security barriers along roads and around strategic military areas or installations. In many cases, however, they are laid without clear design or record in areas that are mainly civilian.

Explosive remnants of war (ERW) are all explosive ordnance that have been used or fired but have failed to explode as intended (unexploded ordnance or UXO) or that have been abandoned (abandoned unexploded ordnance or AXO). They can be hard to detect, have no consistent shape, are often unstable, and can detonate if touched or disturbed, or simply as a result of the passage of time. This includes, for example, cluster munitions (that disperse or release multiple sub-munitions in mid-air, scattering them over a wide area), which if unexploded create effective “minefields”.
