... with a particular congrats to Gerard, the lucky loser who's advancing to keep round 4 even. Gerard v Rue was even tighter than Lapin v Pinocchio in round 1, with a paper thin margin of 49.8% v 50.2%.

round 3 will launch on Monday, 2/12 and Tuesday, 2/13, with 7 polls going up each day for 14 polls total. since that will leave us with only 7 contestants advancing to round 4, we will once again be advancing a lucky loser.

"Do you miss him?"

It's a loaded question, and asked without any teasing.

You avoid Barry's eyes, reaching out and nabbing a few fries from his plate. You practically stuff them into your mouth to keep from answering.

He tips his head to the side, giving you a knowing look. You take your drink up next, taking a deep sip and swallowing thickly before offering, "Did I mention it's nice to see you?"

Barry scoffs a laugh, brows raising as he breathes, "Wow!"

"Shut up," You mutter, sliding down in your seat.

The diner is busier than you've seen it, and busier than you expected it to be. Then again, with Christmas closing in in Metropolis, maybe people have come to visit family, or are there to spend their vacation.

The diner is one of your absolute favorite places that you've frequented in the year and a half that you've lived in Metropolis.

The booths are comfy, they don't make farting noises when you shuffle in and out of them, the food is fricking delicious, and not pricey.

But, in the time that you've been in Metropolis, you haven't been able to banish Nathan from your mind.

Oh, you've tried.

You have spent nights wide awake, trying to forget the way Nathan teased you.

The way he held you, and kissed you.

On the worst nights, you're jolted awake by the dizzying nightmares of that night in the Narrows, what you'd been certain were Nathan's cries for help before you'd been attacked on the roof.

But you've adjusted to being in Metropolis, and being alone.

"...How is he?" You ask lightly.

"Depends on who you ask," Barry shrugs. "Giselle's invited me to a couple of events, we've kinda made eye contact, but we haven't talked. Giselle said he's been doing a lot of press....And it seems to be taking it out of him."

Good.

It bubbles up in behind your lips, and you force it down with another sip of your drink.

"What even happened between you two?" Barry asks, folding his arms on the table.

You sigh softly, shaking your head a little.

"We just...We hit some roadblocks. There was some stuff we couldn't get past."

"Stuff like Vicki Vale?"

"No, not that—I mean yeah, that, but not just that. I think her being around made me realize that he and I just had a lot of differences, things that we just couldn't...Fix."

"You tell Nathan that?"

"...Not in so many words." You clear your throat, waving Barry off. "Anyway. That's passed, it's over, it's...Let's talk about something else! Is there anything that you wanna do over the next few days?"

"Hey, you're the transplant, you tell me."

You mimic him, abruptly stopping as the waitress comes by with the check. You reach for it, but Barry waves you off, warning, "Ah ah. Lemme get dinner since you're letting me crash at yours."

"And because it's dead-cheap?"

"And because it's dead-cheap," Barry grins, reaching for his wallet.

"So, apart from work, which you spend way too much time at, by the way," Barry adds, hip-checking you as you walk down the block toward your apartment, "How are you finding Metropolis?"

"Uh...Fine," You shrug. "It's like any other city, I guess, you know. Busy streets, tons of traffic, overpriced coffee. Nothing I can't handle."

"And, uh...The crime?"

"It could be worse. Trust me—I know worse." You're quiet for a moment, eyeing the pavement. "I've had a couple of visits."

"From Nathan?"

"Lex Luthor."

You glance toward Barry, then look away again quickly when you see his stunned expression.

"What did Lex Luthor want with you?"

"He was just being a dick, you know. Asking why I didn't come to work for him when I moved."

"Why didn't you?"

Because Nathan would've hated it.

"Because I would've hated it."

Barry leans against the door frame, watching as you fish into your pocket for your front door key.

"You been seeing anyone?" He prods. You frown, glancing toward him.

"What's that got to do with Lex Luthor?"

"Nothing. I'm just curious."

"...No," You shrug. "I've been busy."

Glancing up at Barry again, you find him with his brows raised, head tipped forward in disbelief.

"What?" You laugh.

"Nothing," He reaches out, turning the knob of the unlocked door. "Just trying to figure out why you're still loyal to the man that you left."

He leaves you on your doorstep, gob-smacked and shivering.

It stops you dead in your tracks on the way to work. You take a few steps back, squinting at the newspaper in the stand.

Maybe it seems scandalous to the average reader, but you know better, and it has to be a mistake.

Batman takes Prince of Gotham Hostage

How the hell could Nathan take himself hostage?

It's got to be a rumor, or a misprint, or—

Or something?

You pick the paper up, fishing into your pocket for cash and passing it over. You can't take your eyes off of the newspaper as you walk, nearly wandering into traffic a time or two, walking into no less than three streetlights.

You don't have the chance to really dig into it until you reach your office. You shrug your jacket and bag off before you plop into your office chair and finally flip to page two.

According to eyewitness reports, Bateman was last seen at a lavish party. He disappeared around 8:15 on Monday evening, claiming that he needed to speak with the party's coordinator. After nearly an hour without the host, and unable to find him in his cavernous mansion, attendants called 911. Police said that their investigation into the matter took a shocking turn when they caught sight of the vigilante known as Batman escaping through a side window. There have been no further signs of Bateman, and while the investigation is ongoing, police suspect the worst.

You lean back in your seat, lowering the paper as the wheels spin in your head.

Monday. Monday was nearly six days ago. How were you only just hearing about it?

You reach into your pocket, fumbling with your phone and drawing it out with shaking hands.

It has to be a stunt, right? Some kind of ruse?

Something must have gone wrong, or sideways.

Maybe Nathan had gotten a tip about some crime, and had thought he could just leave the party for a little while. Maybe he was caught coming back in the suit and had to hide.

Maybe he's just laying low.

He'll come back with some wild, funny story, something to shut the press up.

You open your contacts, scrolling through to Nathan's. You tap on it without hesitation, raising the phone to your ear.

His voice, you just need to hear his voice and you'll know that everything is okay—

"I'm sorry; the number you have reached is not in service, or temporarily disconnected."

You lower the phone, your heart pounding in your chest.

No. No, this can't be happening, this can't be right.

Something is very, very wrong.

"I just think this is a little rash," Barry warns, but he makes no move to stop you as you dart back and forth from your dresser to where your suitcase is open on your bed.

"I know what I'm doing, Barry."

"Do you? Quitting your job to go back to Gotham because Batman kidnapped Nathan?"

"It isn't—" You go quiet, pressing your lips into a thin, tight line and drawing a deep breath in through your nose. You trust Barry, but you can't tell him the truth, not like this. "I know this seems insane, but this just doesn't feel right."

"What do you think you're going to get by going back?" Barry asks. "You've got nowhere to stay, no job, no plan."

"I have a plan," You swear, "And that plan is to find Nathan."

"The cops can't even find Nathan."

"They don't know him like I do."

You kneel up on your bed, cramming your clothing into the suitcase as hard as you can. There's no way you're going to get it to shut—

You go still as Barry reaches out, taking up a bulky sweater and folding it properly before he reaches for the next item of clothing.

"Let me do this," He sighs resignedly, "Go check to see if your flight has anymore seats. I'm coming back with you."

Your heart soars, and you grin, rounding the bed and throwing your arms around Barry, pecking his cheek between your mutters of, "Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"Alright, alright," He chuckles, waving you off, "Go."

You hurry into the living room, opening your laptop.

You frown as you hear what sounds like a rustling of wind, and glance toward your room.

"Barry? Did you open the window?"

"...A little!"

"Why?"

"Fresh air helps me pack!"

You shake your head, muttering, "Little weirdo," Before you take your laptop off of the counter, walking back toward your bedroom. "So there are a couple of seats available, but they're not to—..." You slow, brow furrowing as you spot your now neatly-packed suitcase. "—Gether...Uh. How the fuck did you do that?"

"I was in, uh...Speed-packing competitions when I was a kid?"

"Is that a thing?"

"...In Central City, yeah."

You eye him for a moment, his bright, smiling face and raised brows.

...Something doesn't feel right about that, either, but one thing at a time.

"O...Kay. Anyway, as I was saying, there are a few seats available but none together."

"That's fine, book 'em," Barry shrugs. "Whatever gets us back fastest."

"Done and done."

Idk if passenger is really a thing on here or if Barry Sloane gets any love on this app BUT I literally adore that show already.

THIS POST WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR PASSENGER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT!

Passenger. Oh my fucking GOD. I've watched it so many times. Eddie Wells has altered my brain chemistry. The tears I shed over that sweet, beautiful man.

The way he didn't even remember doing it, but thought he must have done because he was told he did, because everyone else was so fucking sure he'd done it, he believed them. He was branded evil, a monster, a freak, and probably everything else under the sun for something he didn't even remember doing. The guilt he felt. The staggering loneliness in those five years. It isn't discussed but I bet you any money his family didn't go and visit him once. In five fucking years. (I do understand why, I totally understand Joanne, Katie and Lily's motivations but that doesn't make it hurt Eddie any less)

Then he got out, and all he wanted was to be a part of his own family again. He wanted to be a husband and father again. He missed his little girls, he missed his wife. He missed his home.

And what did he find, what was his open and welcoming heart met with? Coldness, tension, conflict. His family is everything to him, and they didn't want anything to do with him. He wanted to bring Joanne a sandwich to her work, just to be nice, and she asked when he was leaving. Later his eldest daughter nearly threw boiling coffee in his face, his little girl, ready to cause him serious harm. A few days after Lily asks if she can tell him a secret.

He looked so delighted to be trusted with one. To be let back in just a little by the baby of his family, his darling baby girl. And she tells him "I wish you were dead." The TEARS I SHED when he looked up at her and visibly broke. (Barry Sloane is fucking slept on as an actor i swear to god, he is literally incredible). You could see something die in his eyes. The resolve when he stood up.

He went to end his life in the icy lake. 'This is what monsters deserve'. And who saved his life? But Jim, his 'victim'. Jim pulled him from a terrible death.

Because he was owed an answer.

Because Eddie was the beast that attacked him for no reason. Because Eddie was evil and did an evil thing, and Jim wanted to know why.

And then it turned out he was fucking innocent.

The whole time, HE DIDN'T FUCKING DO IT. 5 years in prison, in a 6x8 shoebox. For a crime he didn't even commit.

If you've read this far, do you get why he's changed my brain chemistry forever? He was pushed away, shunned, got himself beaten up, nearly killed himself over something he didn't fucking do.

Eddie was broken by the people of Chadder Vale. Even his own family. And none of it was his fault. 5 years stolen from him, his relationship with his family stolen from him, his reputation stolen from him, his life stolen from him.

AND THEN- AND FUCKING THEN- BARRY TWEETS THIS.

THE FUCK YOU MEAN HE HAS HIS DAUGHTER'S BIRTHDAYS ON HIS WRISTS. THE FUCK YOU MEAN HE HAS HIS WIFE'S NAME ON HIS LEFT FOREARM. THE LAYERS OF TRAGEDY IN ONE CHARACTER IN A SIX EPISODE SERIES ON ITVX. I AM A MESS OVER THIS INFORMATION.

HIS FAMILY IS HIS WORLD. CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW MUCH IT WOULD'VE HURT HIM WHEN AFTER ALL THAT TIME THEY REJECTED HIM??

I'm sobbing all over again. Don't even get me started on the 'it felt real, no?' When Joanne rejected his affection so harshly, because my boy was fucking devastated. (Again. I can empathise with her, I do get it, I do understand her point of view. Eddie has just messed my brain up and I adore him.)

Sincerely, I love him. Thank you Barry for him. I'm going to sob in my corner and think about giving Eddie a hug until there's a season 2.

Oooh I just started rewatching Twin Peaks yesterday! The last time I saw it was around 4 or 5 years ago. Just putting on the first episode again made me realize how much like home this weird little show feels like to me. It’s been nice to see your enthusiasm for it on my dash :)

may I ask what you enjoy most about the show, or why it appeals to you, if anything comes to mind? I find it’s a bit of an odd one to try recommending to people - I love it, of course, but my taste is a little strange, and I don’t find other fans out in the wild that often.

oooh, that's an interesting question! i think theres a lot of aspects that appeal to me about twin peaks...on a very surface level i love the aesthetics of the show, as someone who lives in new england (pacific northwest and new england are connected pacman-map-style in my mind), the settings and fashion are all excellent. i also love its absurdity, i love the fact that no one talks like a real person and theres people with such weird and distinct archetypes and over the top emotions all colliding with each other---that, and the way it approaches the sort of worldbuilding going on, plus the importance of dreams in the narrative contribute to such an interesting and dreamy atmosphere. i think what makes twin peaks special compared to things that were made after it and were inspired by parts of it is that even when its confusing and strange on a literal level, its always emotionally resonant--you don't need to understand it, because you feel it. the way they're able to set up all the people and relationships in this town so quickly, you really feel like you're a fly on the wall in this living and breathing place, even when its strange. you rarely see how buildings and places connect, but you don't need to because its all so convincing as a woven together location (and of course thats for like logistical/filming purposes, but it creates an interesting effect lol). it uses the familiarity of americana tropes (and even television tropes) and distorts them to create meaning, while still keeping parts of their signifiers intact. even watching it for the first time in 2021 was shocking throughout, so i genuinely can't imagine how it felt catching it live when it was airing, like there was nothing else like it! the fact that david lynch helped to make a prime time television show is something that like logically should never have happened, but i'm so glad it did. i also think on a production/creative level, its so interesting to see how it sort of morphed and developed as the original run and fire walk with me and the return unfolded, like what themes were dropped versus what (at first) insignificant details were given meaning and expanded upon.

i do think it can be a hard sell to convince people to give it a chance--i've had a friend or two try to watch it and say its too slow for them, or it just wasn't clicking. but i've also had more friends really get into it, probably because i have a lot of weirdo artsy friends (i say that with love of course). but i think it's a great gateway into other weird and absurd stuff, or at least it was for me. i also enjoy a good ol "weird thing happening in small town" story, and so it was interesting watching twin peaks and then revisiting stuff that was clearly inspired by it, or at least partially (welcome to night vale, s1 of stranger things...s1 of riverdale. but also i think the return has its own sort of inspiration fuel, like season 4 of barry and beau is afraid struck me in the same way that the return did)

bee movie au masterlist ao3

happy third birthday to the bee movie au!! i wrote this quite hastily yesterday but thought i needed to do something to commemorate this anniversary. hope this gets you buzzed! :)

“...and so, we decided his punishment would be to watch the Bee Movie,” Tim finished with a flourish.

“The Bee Movie?” Marinette made a face. “That’s quite a…targeted consequence for losing a bet.” The bet in question was over how much money Bruce would fork to prevent Jason from telling a reporter about him and Batman’s torrid love affair. The answer was nothing—though it was probably because he knew no one would believe it. Wouldn’t stop Vicki Vale, though.

“Why that movie specifically? Does he have a vendetta against it or something?” Marinette questioned further.

“He does, actually.” Steph piped in. “‘Capitalist propaganda,’ he claims, but it’s gotta be more than that. We thought that if we made him watch it, we’d finally find out why.”

She nodded. That made sense.

“Y’know,” the blonde continued, “he always gets weird around bee-themed heroes too, so maybe he just doesn’t like bees in general.”

“He’s not very buzzed about them,” Marinette observed. Tim groaned, but Cass and Dick reached over to give her a high-five.

“We’re watching it tonight, so make sure to bee there,” Dick told her. “You won’t want to miss this one.”

True to his words, the Wayne kids were all gathered in a swarm around the projector that night.

“Where’s the queen bee?” Marinette asked.

“Dunno, but he’s gotta be somewhere in the hive.”

“We are not doing this,” Duke spoke to the air.

He was saved from death by puns at the sight of Damian escorting Jason into the room. Escorting was a loose term, considering the katana the shorter brother was currently brandishing across his throat.

“I have apprehended the convict,” he said. He let go of Jason, who fell to the ground with an oof. “Not to worry. I confiscated his bee-bee guns.”

“Damian!” Marinette cooed, and smothered him in a hug. She was so proud. “My honey’s all grown up.” He scowled at her but made no move to push her away.

“Don’t bee such a buzzkill,” Dick said to Jason, resting a hand on his shoulder.

“I hope you all go to hell.”

“Bees have good qualities. And it takes my mind off the shop,” Vanessa said to Barry, waxing poetic about her fuzzy more-than-a-friend.

In what seemed like an odd mirror of the situation, Marinette leaned over to whisper to Jason. “Are you okay?”

He had seemed mildly uncomfortable at the beginning of the movie, but she was beginning to get concerned. His posture was uncomfortable stiff, he had uncharacteristically drawn into himself, and his face was awfully red…

“Do you want to leave?” she prompted.

Jason whispered something under his breath, but it was indistinguishable.

“Don’t be such a mumble bee,” Marinette said, followed by a sheepish ‘sorry.’ The situation was funny at first, but now she was worried that the Bee Movie was emotionally triggering for Jason. Perhaps the failure to overturn capitalist institutions reminded him of his failure to get Bruce to understand his moral stance on killing, or…something.

There was no response aside from the slight grimace that crossed Jason’s face, so she let it be. Bee. Haha.

The Wayne siblings were largely movie talkers, so it was easy to let herself get swept away in their commentary and the lightheartedness of the movie. When Ken attempted to swat Barry away, however, she felt a shift on the couch and heard Tim shout suprisedly. She turned around to see Jason slipping out the door.

“I’ll get him,” she said immediately. The rest of them had already stood up, but she sent them a look. They all knew that crowding Jason wouldn’t help, and he would be the most willing to listen to her.

“Pollen, buzz on!”

She winced at both the suit and the raised brows she received, but it was her only choice! Pollen had been curious about the movie, and she would have to be a real wasp to turn them down.

“Time to get down to bees-ness.”

Plan A of calling Jason on his phone didn’t work, so Marinette was forced to resort to plan Bee. It didn’t take long to track him to the top of a roof, and even less time to get herself there.

When she landed, Jason moved deeper into the shadows, his body carefully angled away from her. She could hardly make out his face in the darkness. “Go away,” he said, but it didn’t sound like he really wanted her to leave.

“Come on, Jason. You can tell me what’s wrong. I won’t make fun of you.” Marinette edged closer towards him with carefully small steps. It felt like she was trying to approach a spooked animal.

“Marinette,” he warned, but the force behind his words was getting weaker.

“Whatever it is, I’ll try my best to help you. It’s okay.”

Jason snapped out of his reverie in a flash. He took a step forward in his panic, then back, but it was too late. Judging by the widening of her eyes after she looked down, there was no doubt that Marinette had seen it. God, he wished he had a fucking ‘bee-bee’ gun to hold to his head right now.

“Jason? Wait, no, come back—”

He ran and pointedly did not heed her words. In fact, he was planning on never coming back. If the universe was on his side at all, his grappling hook would miss the next roof and he would never return to the land of the living.

Of course, the universe hated him, so he was quickly immobilized by the Bee Miraculous’s venom ability.

Marinette couldn’t believe it. Jason’s beehavior all made sense now: his refusal to watch the Bee Movie, his unwillingness to be seen—she just never thought it was because it gave him the urge to stick his finger into a honeypot.

“Sorry. Does it sting? No, stop glaring at me, that wasn’t a pun. Okay, maybe it was.”

The situation was a little unconventional, but she couldn’t stand to see Jason so embee-rassed.

“Truth bee told, I’m a little confused. But!” she emphasized, “I’m not opposed, per se.”

Jason looked beewildered.

“What was it that Barry said…right. I can help you, ah, drain the old stinger.”

The confusion was still plastered across his face, so Marinette released him from the effects, trusting he wouldn’t fly away. Then again, according to all known laws of aviation, there was no way a bee should be able to fly, so maybe those weren’t to be trusted.

“Why?” Jason asked. She didn’t need to question what he meant.

“I’ve aways liked the taste of honey. And, conveniently, I have access to a magical bee costume…”

Was it an abuse of power? Perhaps, but she was the Guardian of the Miraculous, so it didn’t matter. “You’re so beeautiful,” Jason whispered, and leaned in.

Safe to say, after the buzz they caused from their pollination, they needed to buy some Plan Bee.

New(ish) Comics:

Batman & Robin #5: I liked how much of this story was based at school. I disliked the teacher suggesting Damian should be attending college classes. NO! Bruce is right! This is a socialisation exercise! #KeepDamianInSchool2024!

Wesley Dodds: The Sandman #4: This is still so fascinating, as I know so little. Riley Rossmo drawing Art Deco was not something I thought I needed but it’s fascinating.

Outsiders #3: I'm...conflicted about this. Did I like Luke and Duke spending some time together? Sure. Do I think we needed ANOTHER book currently infested with 1000 different universe versions of Batman? No. For a comic that's trying really really hard to claim it's not about Bruce and it's about getting away from Bruce (why is your team called Outsiders then??) there is a lot of Bruce showing up.

The fish-headed Batwoman was amusing, though.

Speed Force #3: I am starting to feel like this is a comic I need to come back and read once I’ve read Teen Titans Academy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad to see the formation of more social groups (and Ace and Jaime together was a lovely bro moment), but I’m begging people to stop pitching particularly Kory, Donna, Raven and Gar as hanging out or in social spaces with the teens. I know DC have done it way too many times over the years now but it never, ever makes sense. Still enjoying this series is aware of what’s going on in other titles, though.

DC’s How to Lose a Guy Gardner in 10 Days: this was a MIX. The Barry/Iris one was light and insubstantial (but very Flash). I think, funnily enough, my favourite bits were Vicky Vale dating Guy Gardner for an article (hah), the Heart of the Ocean ripoff in the Booster story, and the John Constantine story swerving rapidly into reminding you you were reading Hellblazer right on the last page.

The most frustrating parts of this, to my eye:

Unwillingness to properly commit to anything other than a heterosexual couple (Constantine got the closest but wouldn't show anything)

Seriously. You had EIGHT stories and only one of them was not a guy and a girl?

Okay fine Diana got asked out by both men and women but she actually wasn't interested in dating any of them so I'm not counting it.

Steph and Cass randomly running around the back of the Dick/Babs story. Either this is about Dick and Babs, so focus on THEM, or give in and stop queerbaiting Steph and Cass. Honestly for many reasons I think actually putting them together would be a terrible thing for both characters, but clearly DC likes the speculation (but not enough to DO anything about it).

Traya's still MIA since 2010 apparently. Thanks, Red Tornado.

The Warlord #34: this week in Skartaris Travis Morgan acquires the Hellfire sword from a village of dwarfs. The sword apparently makes him invulnerable to magic. He also reunites with Machiste and Mariah after getting magically transported to where they were by the sword. Machiste and Mariah finally get to tell Travis they're dating. However they get stuck in the far past, while the sword whisks Travis back to the present day.

One of the dwarfs is named Mongo Ironhand. He likes summoning and drinking martinis. (Really)

bruce whose love language is giving gifts, like a cat leaving a dead mouse at your door. but especially with his kids. especially with dick and jason, because they got their childhood taken from them just like he had so he fills their rooms with toys and books ad anything they ask for and takes them to theme parks and movies (during the day) and.

then jason dies and it all changes.

and he doesn’t give tim anything because tim isn’t his, and after jason be can’t just take tim, and then there’s cass and damian and damian doesn’t need him or anything he offers at all.

and then he gets lost in time.

and when he gets back he sees a stuffed elephant and he snaps a picture and sends it to dick because he’s too old for stuffed animals or is he and bruce buys it anyway and he sees a leatherbound collection of shakespeare’s works and leaves it at jason’s doorsteps and he gives cass tickets to the ballet and she asks him to come and he takes damian to an art supply store because dick mentioned that he liked art and lets him buy whatever he wants

and he funds adding ramps to as much of gotham as he can but especially the places barbara frequents and he writes letters of recommendation for steph so she can get into nursing school and he send duke memes that barry and hal send in the justice league chat and he brings the newspaper to alfred every morning because what else could he do for alfred and he gets clark glasses that he can’t snap and he gets hal’s lease renewed when he can and adds him to wayne enterprises as a *consultant* in the R&D department and he get diana tickets to plays and he doesn’t get oliver anything but he always gives dinah two gifts

and most of the time he’s quiet about it but dick seems a bit less weighed down by the world when he visits next and jason actually speaks to him without yelling or fighting for a short while and cass signs so animatedly and damian *smiles* and barbara gives him a knowing look when vickie vale does a report on the ramps and steph says she doesn’t need his help and squeals and hugs him because she got in and duke sends him memes back and alfred smiles at him every morning and clark broke the glasses but bruce starts on a new pair and hal has a home and job on earth to come back to and diana kisses his cheek with a quiet thank u and oliver threatens him while dinah laughs and that.

Last song: Probably either The Man or Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift. I just spent a week with my sister on vacation and she had just watched the Eras Tour movie so she was getting both of those stuck in my head all the time, and then we'd have to listen to them ofc.

Last movie: It was Host by Rob Savage (or at least it was when I started this, lol). I watched it 'cause I saw something on Insta about the Top 10 Scariest Movies according to what the average resting heart rate is for it. I didn't find it very scary (got me at the end though, woo boy) but I did love it - but then I love things that use the pandemic well and this definitely did imo. Plus it's all structured around (and shot through) a Zoom interface so it's only, like, fifty-seven minutes long because that's all you get when you don't pay for Zoom, haha.

Currently watching: Goosebumps, Last Week Tonight, The Fall of the House of Usher, Two Sentence Horror Stories, Our Flag Means Death and Ghost Files and I am half-assing all of it. I've either only started the first episode or only watched the first episode on all of those. I have no staying power these days. Though I am only one ep behind on Last Week Tonight \o/

Other stuff I watched this year: Unfortunately for you guys, I write fucking everything down and it is now the tenth month of the year. I GOT RECS. Well, Meg 2: The Trench, which is a cinematic masterpiece and I will take no questions on that (unless they're Joming related). (Cognizant of the month) Here are spooky things I watched this year and liked a lot: X, The Black Phone, The Menu, Terrifier and Terrifier 2 (this is definitely only for gore fans though), Bodies Bodies Bodies, Cocaine Bear (also a cinematic masterpiece, also not taking questions), Interview with the Vampire, Wednesday, Severance, Evil, The Last of Us, Over the Garden Wall, Magpie Murders, What We Do in the Shadows, and Shining Vale (haven't started the second season yet!). Also really liked: Paddington, Nimona, Barbie, Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse, Vivo, Derry Girls, The Bear, The Boys, Mythic Quest, Only Murders in the Building (I haven't watched the new season yet though but I expect great things), Reboot, Tuca & Bertie, Los Espookys, Barry, Extraordinary, Crashing (I literally watched it three times in a row - watching Sam and Fred fall in love 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 plus I fucking love Jonathan Bailey - I consistently find him ridiculously charming), Hacks, Avenue 5 (so sad this got canceled when I feel like it just hit its stride), Staged (I've watched it probably six times now), Abbott Elementary, A Black Lady Sketch Show, Ted Lasso, I Think You Should Leave Now (just for that one sketch, you know the one and, if you don't, I am HAPPY to tell you about it!), Unstable (petition for Fred Armisen to be in everything though, right?), Black Mirror, Central Park, Elite (I haven't watched the new season yet!), Reservation Dogs (ditto), The White Lotus, Good Omens, Letterkenny, Minx (what's ditto but for the third time?), Heartstopper, Sasaki and Miyano, and The Other Two.

Shows I dropped/didn’t finish: I'm behind on everything all the time so I'm only going to answer for shows I dropped and I don't think I've dropped any this year?

Currently reading: The Dead Take the A Train by Cassandra Khaw & Richard Kadrey (about halfway through), House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski (I'll be reading this until I die, I think), Cunk on Everything by Philomena Cunk, The Fragile Threads of Power by V.E. Schwab (nearly finished!), The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith, My Darling Girl by Jennifer McMahon and The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice (decided to do a reread of the IwtV series this year since I never actually finished it and only got to book ten and I read it way too long ago to remember anything that's happening if I just picked it up now).

Currently listening to: My calendar alarm telling me to go to my dog's vet appointment.

Currently working on: getting at least a third of the way through My Darling Girl

while we wait out a week of voting to see who will be advancing to round 4, here's some numerical neatness from round 2!

total votes: all together, the 27 polls of round 2 received a total of 16,454 votes. hot damn!

largest percentage of votes: we didn't see quite as many astronomical defeats as we did in round 1, with only one PC winning more than 90% of the votes in any one poll (unsurprising, the choices get tougher every round!), but there were still some pretty large disparities to be seen.

Riz Gukgak (90.8%) - still only the third most brutal beatdown in the competition so far!

*Neverafter: while Gerard lost his poll against Rue, he was passed on by virtue of being the most successful losing character for the sake of keeping the pool even for round 3, meaning that Neverafter passed on 100% of its remaining characters by technicality.

- You really aren't! You're not jealous, and you're definitely not overthinking this.

- You're not overthinking the way Nathan is keeping such steady eye contact with Vicki Vale as they dance.

- You're not jealous of his hand on her lower back.

- And you're really not overthinking the way that he smiles at her.

- At least, you're trying really, really hard not to.

- "Do you want me to go cut in?”

- It’s a sweet offer, but you have a feeling that Barry doing so would only irritate Nathan.

- Well, Nathan never really warmed to Barry, anyway.

- “No,” You shake your head. “But thank you.”

- “...Wanna make him jealous?” Barry waggles his brows, making you laugh and smile in earnest.

- “Nathan doesn’t get jealous like that—and not about me.”

- “Oh, please,” Barry rolls his eyes.

- “What?”

- Barry’s brows tip up as he glances over toward Nathan and Vicki.

- “If I got within a foot of you back when we were seeing each other, he was right there reminding us to save room for Jesus—and he was Jesus.”

- You snort an unseemly laugh, turning and hiding your face in Barry’s shoulder as people around you give you looks.

- “Oh—well done,” Barry mutters.

- “What?”

- “That got his attention.”

- The statement makes you straighten up, tense.

- “Relax,” Barry coos, “Here, c’mon.” He wraps his arm around your waist, his hand on your hip as he steers you off of the dance floor and toward the bar.

- “You’re really laying it on thick here, Allen.”

- “I know what I’m doing,” Barry mutters. “Betchya he’ll be over here in two minutes.”

- “Doubtful,” You pout, leaning against the bar and propping your chin up on your hand.

- “If he doesn’t, we’ll go down our drinks and go grab dinner. We’ll be the fanciest people at the 43rd street diner. Hell, if he comes over, we’ll go anyway,” Barry offers, smiling and tipping the bartender that sets down two fresh champagne flutes.

- “Okay, that I am down for,” You nod, lightly clinking your glass against Barry’s before taking a sip.

- “What is it you’re down for?”

- The sound of Nathan’s voice almost makes you do a spit-take.

- You don’t dare look at Barry; you can only imagine the wide, smug, cat-that-got-the-canary grin on his face.

- You manage to swallow your drink and force a calm expression before you turn to face Nathan.

- He looks as calm as you do, but you can see scant cracks in his façade—the tightness around his eyes, and the way he’s muscled himself in at the bar between you and Barry.

- “Barry and I are going to finish these up and go get some food,” You answer simply.

- “That so. I’ll join you.”

- “I don’t think that’s necessary.”

- “I do. What can Buddy get you for what he makes? A handful of fries and a hot coffee?”

- “More like two handfuls of fries and unlimited soda,” Barry pipes up. You smile as he drains his champagne flute and sets it down. “Do you have a ticket for the coat check?”

- “Uhhh...Yeah” You open your clutch, fishing around for the little red stub they gave you at the door, “Thanks.” You hold it out to Barry over Nathan’s shoulder and lean back against the bar as Barry takes hold of it.

- You have to fight back a laugh as Barry claps Nathan on the shoulder. “Thanks for the champagne, buddy.”

- You’re almost certain that if it was only the three of you there, Nathan might swing at him. Instead, Nathan’s expression just tightens further as he watches Barry leave.

- “You’re really gonna leave this early?” Nathan asks. “I haven’t even given my speech yet.”

- “You’re giving a speech? You didn’t tell me that.”

- “Well, I wasn’t going to, but Miss Vale helped me do some rewrites.”

- Your grip tightens on your champagne glass as you swirl the remaining bubbling liquid about.

- “Did she? How kind of her.”

- “She’s got a way with words.”

- “I thought her focus was photography.”

- “Well, you know how many a picture is worth.”

- “Then she must have plenty of practice.”

- “...Look,” Nathan lowers his voice, glancing over your shoulder. “If you’re really going with Barry, at least let Alfred know when he can came take you home.”

- You search Nathan’s gaze for a moment before you shrug. “Barry can take me home. It’ll be fine.”

- “Really.”

- “Sure. He has before.”

- It’s a little cruel. It’s twisting the knife. But Nathan doesn’t bow to it like you’d like him to. He just huffs out a mean little laugh, nods, mutters, “Do whatever you want, cupcake,” Before he pushes off of the bar.

- You can’t help but watch him go until he’s disappeared into the crowd, your self-righteous annoyance melting into regret.

- You find yourself still looking as Barry comes back and helps you into your coat.

- You only just manage to avert your gaze when your eyes catch on Vicki’s, as you give her a tight smile and a quick nod on your way out.

- You don’t make it to the diner. Instead, Barry ferries you back to your apartment, and lounges as the two of you order takeout and more alcohol for delivery.

- (Out of spite, you use some of the exorbitantly high Venmo balance that Nathan has sent you)

- “You shouldn’t let him get under your skin like that.”

- Barry’s advice is muffled through his mouthful of burger and fries. You wince a little at the sight, and the few sprayed particles of food. You reach out, swiping the specks away with a napkin before you toss the napkin in the trash.

- You slouch back against your cabinets, seated on your counter, your skirt making a swishing sound as you swing your bare feet back and forth.

- “I got under his, too,” You argue, “Like...A little.”

- “More than a little. I thought he was gonna cold-cock me.”

- You smile, gaze sweeping Barry. He looks strangely debonair with his shirt partially unbuttoned, his tie undone, hanging loosely around his neck.

- “He wouldn’t,” You reassure, “Not in public, anyway.”

- “Oh, well. That’s great reassurance, thank you.”

- You chuckle, raising your burger and taking a bite.

- “You gonna talk to him about it?” Barry asks.

- You consider it as you lower your burger and chew, picking at a stray piece of lettuce.

- “I have, a little,” You admit. “I worry about her poking around.”

- “Why?”

- “Bateman Enterprises has a lot of top-secret shit brewing. I’m not in on all of it,” You fib, “But...I don’t know what she’s digging for. That worries me.”

- Barry hums thoughtfully. “Could just ask her.”

- “Somehow I don’t think she’ll be all that forthright.”

- “You never know until you try.”

- “Maybe not, but I can suspect.”

- “...I’m gonna ask you something, and I swear I mean it in, like...Good...Spirit,” Barry draws out.

- “Okay?”

- “Are you suspicious of her motives, or are you suspicious because she’s getting so close to Nathan?”

- Your gaze flickers to Barry before it lowers again, discomfort muddling with the burger in your stomach.

- “...It’s a bit of both,” You admit after a moment. “I don’t like her getting so close to the company, or Nathan. He keeps everyone at arm’s length.”

- “Except for you, and for her?”

- “...Yeah,” You nod a little. It pains you to say so, but you can’t pretend that your wariness of Vicki Vale has absolutely nothing to do with how Nathan has responded to her, both as himself, and as Batman.

- Barry nods sympathetically before he reaches out, gently patting your knee. You smile, reaching up and gently ruffling Barry’s neatly coiffed hair, giggling as he groans and whacks at your hand, ducking away from you.

- Barry leaves around midnight. You’re tried, and tipsy, and wishing that you’d gotten him to at least start to undo your dress zipper a little before he left.

- You managed to get the very top of it, but now it’s in the middle of your back and you—you just can’t—ugh, you can’t quite reach it.

- Your fingertips are just brushing the zipper as you groan in frustration.

- “Need a hand?”

-”Holy—!” You screech at the sound of Nathan’s modulated voice, whirling around to see him standing in your otherwise dark bedroom doorway. “Motherfucking—shitballs, fuck, don’t do that!”

- “Close the blinds,” Is Nathan’s succinct reply. You huff, trudging over to he window and tugging the blinds all closed. As you reach the last one, you hear Nathan’s boots thud deeper into the apartment.

- You go still as his hand steadies on your hip, then his other hand raises, undoing the zipper. You sigh as the straps sag around your shoulders.

- “Thanks,” You mutter. You push the dress down, wriggling it lower and lower with each step before you finally crouch down, scooping up the pooled fabric from around your ankles and carrying it into your bedroom.

- It leaves you in your bra, your high-waisted control-top shapewear undies, and your pantyhose.

- “How was your speech,” You call over our shoulder. It’s another moment before Nathan is following you into the bedroom again.

- “It was fine.”

- “Did Vicki like it?”

- The question falls out of your mouth, and you can’t shove it in again. It hangs in the air uncomfortably.

- You hear Nathan sigh heavily before you hear the slight hiss and ruffle of him removing his helmet.

- “This still?” He asks boredly, voice unmodulated. You shrug, tugging on your bathrobe (satin, and blue—one of the designer ones that Nathan bought for you months ago) before you wriggle out of your shapewear and toss it into your hamper.

- “You said she helped you with the rewrite. I was just asking if it came out the way she wanted it.”

- You’re going to tie your robe closed, but Nathan presses up behind you, his arms curling around your middle, his kevlar cool against your back.

- “It’s kinda sweet, you know?” He murmurs, lips brushing the curve of your ear.

- “What is?”

- “You, being so jealous.”

- “Oh, fuck off,” You scoff. Impulsively, you elbow him in the gut, then wince, regretting the sting and resounding pulse of pain from the whack at his kevlar. Nathan chuckles softly, dipping his head and nuzzling your neck.

- “No, it really is,” He insists, gently swaying the two of you back and forth.

- “Lemme go, Nathan,” You grumble. “I wanna go wash off my makeup.”

- “In a minute.”

- “What are you gonna do between now and then?”

- Nathan turns you to face him, his gloved hand gripping your jaw and forcing your gaze to his.

- Heat rushes to your face, throat going tight as his gaze sweeps your expression.

- “You bring that dweeb back here just to piss me off?” He asks. You roll your eyes.

- “Barry is my friend.”

- “That’s all?”

- “That’s all.”

- “Alright...Vicki Vale is a reporter doing a profile on me.”

- “Congrats.”

- “That’s all she is to me. Alright?”

- You lower your gaze grudgingly to his chest, to the insignia on his chest.

- Maybe that’s all she is to Nathan, but is that all she is to Batman?

- In your mind, she’s a threat to Batman.

- Not a threat like the Scarecrow, or Mr. Freeze, or the Penguin—

- Yo don’t think she’s planning on causing Batman grievous harm.

- You’re certain that she wants to get in his head, to blow his identity wide open.

- You don’t know what you’d do if she did.

- “Yeah,” You nod. “Alright.”
