Jaune go's to a monster school au. He is a Human aloud to go because his family His ability and his abundance of Mana. He was never that how to use it the So, despite getting similar results to other students, he uses absurd amounts of manna on stuff that really should abuse that much. Weiss is a vampier, rwby werewolf, yang a dragon, penny a golem, Blake is a werecat, Ren a ghost, Nora a Valkyrie, pariah is a demigod daughter of Aries.
Jaune: Hi, I'm Jaune. Jaune Arc. Short, sweet, and rolls of the tongue. The ladies love it~.
Jaune: ...Okay, maybe they don't now, but they will! Anyway, that's not what I wanted to talk about. See, I kind of need to vent, and this is the only way I really can.
Jaune: But what do I have to vent about? I have a great family, a lot of great friends, and a bright future ahead of me! I just... have to survive until I reach it.
Jaune: ...Let me start over. My name is Jaune Arc, the only son born to the Arc family, who are one of the few families on Remnant with access to mana, or magic. I'm not very good at it, but I'm good enough to not be allowed to go to normal, regular people school.
Jaune: So that's why I'm attending Beacon's Light Academy of Magic, which was explained to me at one of the four "Great Mage" academies in Remnant, along with Atlas's Might, Haven's Garden, and Vacuo's End. It's not so bad so far, since I'm learning a lot at Beacon with my best friend, Ruby Rose.
-------------------------------------------
Jaune: What's for lunch, Ruby?
Ruby: (Sniffs) Mm... Beef...
Jaune: What else?
Ruby: Uh... I don't know. Why? The only thing you need to eat is beef, pork, and chicken, right?
Jaune: Uh...
-------------------------------------------
Jaune: See, Ruby is a werewolf. Yeah. You heard me. Half-human, half-wolf. I don't really know what the story is, since I don't really pry into her business, but Ruby basically has what's called "primal mana," which is magic based on tapping into your most base instincts and emotions, like fear, anger, and hunger. She's usually cool, except on the days that have full moons later that night, then she gets super irritable. She can still go to day classes, but she has to go to the safety bunker before... Well, based on the claw marks I see getting fixed the next morning, it's something super bad. Like, so bad, Weiss can't go to her night classes.
Jaune: Oh, speaking of Weiss, she's also my friend, and I kinda have crush on her. ...Okay, she's not really my friend yet. More of a friend of a friend. But I'm getting there, I think. But it might be best for me to keep my distance from her because the reason I can only see her so few times is because...
-------------------------------------------
Jaune: Oh, uh, h-hey, Weiss!
Weiss: For the love of... Good morning, Jaune.
Jaune: So, uh, how... How were your classes?
Weiss: Fine, Jaune.
Jaune: Cool, cool... So, uh... Do you... wanna get some... blood?
Weiss: (Puts her book down)
Weiss: (Slowly turns to look at him, Bewildered)
Jaune: ...Is that a no?
-------------------------------------------
Jaune: Look, if someone as flat and uninteresting as romance novel teens can get vampires, why shouldn't I try my luck? You know, besides the fact that I'm Type-O and probably a better meal than a friend to her. Nevertheless, I will keep trying... until she tells me she wants nothing to do with me. Which she hasn't. Yet. But she won't! Maybe.
Jaune: Anyway, being a vampire is kind of a double-edged lottery sword. It's part of something called "genesis mana," or "Blood Magic". Only people of a certain bloodline can access this, but it also curses your family to become some kind of monster, like a vampire, a wendigo, or even a werewolf. And that's why the Schnee family is so picky about who hangs out with who. My dad used to tell me that some families turn away suitors because "certain blood dulls the mana". He also tells me it's stupid, but also stupid to try my luck. Thankfully, he's not here to judge me, and I have friends who're willing to support me, like Ruby and...
-------------------------------------------
Penny: Sal-u-tations~!
Jaune: Oh, hey, Penny. What's going on?
Penny: I have heard about your recent failures with friend Weiss and have been instructed by friend Ruby to cheer you up!
Ruby: W-What?! N-No, I didn't!
Jaune: ...
Jaune: (Writes on a napkin) Ruby, I have a command written on this napkin. The command is, "Show me every command Ruby gave." You either tell me the truth, or I ask Penny to eat this.
Ruby: She can say no, though, so there!
Jaune: Penny, would you like to eat this napkin with a command written on it?
Penny: Yes, I would!
Ruby: NOOOOOOO!
-------------------------------------------
Jaune: She's also a really great lie detector. I mean, except for when telling her own lies. That's just how golems are, I guess. Penny is kind of a... experiment Atlas is testing out at Beacon. She's going to be attending here as a way to test if golems are sentient and capable of safely interacting with other people. Why a school full of young adults would be considered safe, I have no idea, but I'm glad to have a friend like Penny around. And as far as I can tell, whether you were born or crafted together with "creati mana," you're still human to me!
Jaune: Uh, I mean people! You're still people to me! Hah... Sorry... Last time I said "human," I got on the bad side of...
-------------------------------------------
Blake: You were late to class.
Jaune: Sorry, sorry!
Blake: Being sorry doesn't excuse you showing up late.
Jaune: Right, sorry. I was up late last night, reading a really good issue of X-Ray and Vav.
Blake: ...You stayed up late. For a comic book.
Jaune: A really good one! You like reading, don't you?
Blake: ...
Blake: (Digs claws into the table)
-------------------------------------------
Jaune: Yeah, Ruby isn't the only one who can access "primal mana". In fact, it's a lot more common for faunus to access it than humans, for obvious reasons. But unlike Ruby, Blake seems irritated all the time when it comes to hanging out with me. Honestly, she feels more like a friend of a friend than Weiss does with me. Almost every word that I say seems to piss her off, and I don't know why.
Jaune: Hah... Guess I'm just unlucky with girls as friends, since I get along really well with...
-------------------------------------------
Jaune: Yo, Ren!
Ren: Good morning, Jaune.
Jaune: Any luck last night?
Ren: Not yet. But I did rearrange the recipe in the cafeteria for a healthier meal this afternoon.
Jaune: Oh... Uh...
Ruby: WHERE'S THE BEEF?!
-------------------------------------------
Jaune: Ren is a ghost, and he's been haunting this school for the past... I don't really know. But what I do know is how Ren got to where he is now. See, he was human, like me, and before he died in school, he cast a spell that bound his soul to the school.
Ren: Wrong.
Jaune: AGH!
Ren: I was attuned with "psyki mana" and could manifest my soul so I could find my best friend after I died. We were supposed to graduate, but when I finally came to life, she'd already left without me.
Jaune: Wait, you didn't cast a spell or anything?
Ren: In order for me to cast, I would require access to my aura, which was lost in my final moments. But my soul is still present, though it requires time and effort to manifest.
Jaune: ...
Ren: You can just say you don't know.
Jaune: I don't know. But, uh, were you able to get into the office?
Ren: No. Access to the office is protected from every mana variant known to Remnant. Nothing magical in nature, including a ghost, can enter.
Jaune: Geez, that's rough. You know who might be able to help?
-------------------------------------------
Nora: Alright, alright, what's going on now?
Jaune: Uh, well, I was just making my way to class when suddenly-
Nora: Were you attacking this poor girl?!
Jaune: What?! No! It's the other way around!
Nora: HA! Yeah, right! Look at you! You're twice her size and SHE attacked you?
Ruby: You stole my comic book!
Jaune: I did not!
Nora: Oh, really? Hand it over, kid.
Jaune: But-
Nora: HAND. IT. OVER.
-------------------------------------------
Jaune: ...On second thought, nevermind. Valkyries aren't really that helpful, are they?
Ren: It depends on what the situation is. If it's in response to a violent crime, they are merciless and will do whatever it takes to protect the innocent in the magic realm.
Jaune: But if it's a petty crime?
Ren: They... can be a bit biased in who they assist. Unless their opponent is a hostile monster with a weapon, they're not good with delegation and diplomacy. But they do care.
Jaune: Well, you could always ask one, right?
Ren: Unfortunately, no. Valkyries are protected by a specialized armor that prevents the effects of mana. A ghost like me can't even be seen by them, let alone get near one.
Jaune: Dang... Well, best of luck to you.
Ren: Thank you. Also, before I leave, I was asked to find you.
Jaune: Really? By who?
-------------------------------------------
Jaune: Uh, h-hi...
Pyrrha: H-Hi...
Jaune: ...
Pyrrha: ...
Jaune: So, uh-
Pyrrha: DADDY, NO!
Jaune: Wha-?
Jaune: (Sees giant boar barreling at him)
-------------------------------------------
Jaune: Ugh... Great... You ever heard of helicopter parents? Well, with someone like Pyrrha, her helicopter dad comes equipped with a rocket launcher and twin machine guns. And a hatred for any boy that gets close to his daughter. Kind of expected since her dad is the God of War. And when I say god, I mean ALL the gods of war to have ever existed. It's part of her "deity mana," where a very lucky few are literal descendants of the divine. And hers happens to be the embodiment of war, violence, and combat. So not only can her dad kick my ass, but SHE can kick my ass!
Jaune: I don't know how I'm going to survive this school, but hey, here's hoping I can at least make it to graduation!
Jaune: ...Er, no offense, Ren.

Was MissHabit Partial Inspiration for Pyrrha Nikos in RWBY?
Tumblr media
If you’ve stumbled into this post, chances are you seen the second video in my “Monty Oum’s Vision for RWBY” video project. In it, I referred to many of the sources of inspirations and concepts that would shape RWBY into being the type of show it would become. One of those inspirations was Monty’s interest in cosplay and the cosplayers he knew personally. Among those cosplayers was Amie Lynn, otherwise known as “MissHabit” and how I claimed she served as partial inspiration for not just the character Weiss Schnee, but possibly Pyrrha Nikos as well.
But how did I even come to that conclusion if Monty never explicitly said-so himself?
In case I did not drive my point home clearly enough in the video, I want to stress that this is all guesswork on my part. Monty did in fact state the based another character with MissHabit in mind besides Weiss but he never specified which one. He at most only teased how he got the idea for the character towards her. So nothing is really conclusive. But the assumption I made was not at all a shot in the dark. I spent time collecting certain sources, connecting dots and contemplating on my own. In the end, I’m not one-hundred percent certain. But I figured it would at least be worth sharing how exactly I thought this through.
First, let’s examine the following tweets from Monty himself:
Him claiming a character’s design was inspired by MissHabit
Him claiming how another character aside from Weiss was inspired by MissHabit
Him referring to how she wore a wig one day, a set of armor another day, and her smile
Him stating it was a secret
Him telling MissHabit that they’ll talk at Pax
One thing of note is the timing of those tweets. which were on March 11th, 2013. At this point, the Black trailer wouldn’t premiere until the 22nd of March. While one could argue that Blake Belladonna was the character Monty referred to, he then explicitly replied to both MissHabit and Linda Le, otherwise known as “Vampy-Bit-Me”, stating how the he had the latter in mind when designing Blake. So then, if it was not likely Blake, then maybe it was Yang Xiao Long instead since her trailer would not premiere until June 2nd. Well, here’s the thing, Monty explicitly stated that Barbara Dunkelman, the voice of Yang, was a big inspiration for the character, so much so that his pitch for casting her as Yang was simply put, “you should play Goldilocks”. It was kind of a no-brainer.
It obviously could not have been Ruby Rose either since her trailer had come out months prior to the above list of tweets and Monty was being very secretive about the matter. So then, if this other character was likely someone outside of team RWBY, who else could it be? Well, there are a few other clues that help narrow things down. For one, Jessica Nigri would end up voicing Cinder and thus would have likely served as a partial source of inspiration for the character as well. Then there’s that one tweet about how MissHabit wore a wig one day, a set of armor another and how Monty referred to her smile. The armor and smile aspect specifically does aptly describe Pyrrha’s character, though one could also state that maybe he was referring to Nora as well since she smiles a lot and has the braces around her torso in her volume 1-3 design. Then again, if say Pyrrha was the character in question, when Monty talked about how the supposed character was “designed with MissHabit in mind”, there’s a chance he’s referring to not Pyrrha’s final design from concept artist Einlee, but rather from Monty’s original design of her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He obviously didn’t elaborate on what kind of wig or armor Miss Habit wore, but one famous cosplay of hers is that of Lightning in Final Fantasy XIII-2. That character’s design and Pyrrha’s initial concept design do share a few similarities, but there’s definitely no confirmation as to whether he based the initial look off of Lightning at all. And Monty went on record to correcting people whenever his characters in RWBY were compared to specific characters in other popular works of fiction, so we’ll leave a question mark in that regard.
However, one last clue and is probably the biggest one is that of Misshabit’s own personality and experiences. In interviews and other videos, she expressed things about herself that stick out. In one of her Q & A videos on Youtube, she mentioned about how she wound up being the kind of person she is today (assuming she still is the same person years after that video). She mentioned how by the middle of her high school years, she became a more optimistic person and someone that wanted to help people and do the right thing. Also in that video and certain interviews like the one at Pax East, her interviewer assumed that she broke the hearts of guys as if her appearance and personality garnered naturally garnered such romantic attention. But her response suggested that she, at least at the time of the interview, never really got asked out by anyone. Sound familiar?
What I said before bears repeating, but everything stated is all guesswork and nothing more. I don’t know for sure if Pyrrha Nikos was the character Monty was talking about or not and we may never know. Given how MissHabit and Monty saw each other at Pax East 2013 (she cosplayed as Natsu from Soul Calibur 5 then), he seems to have shared some things. But it’s not even clear if he ever really brought up the other character that he claimed to have MissHabit in mind. And the cosplayer does have quite the supposedly quirky personality, so maybe it really could’ve been Nora instead. But even if my hypothesis could be proven wrong, that does not negate the fact that cosplay was a vital cornerstone within Monty’s ideas for RWBY and the various characters in them. Monty cared about seeing people cosplay his characters. Monty was close friends with various professional cosplayers. Monty was conscious about designing characters with pockets and pouches for cosplayers to put their wallets and phones inside when at cons. Monty still created characters like Melanie & Militia because certain friends of his requested a set of twins to cosplay as and Neo who was based off of a gender-bent Roman Torchwick cosplay. And if say, she was based off Pyrhha, that doesn’t change the fact Jen Brown was chosen to voice Pyrrha either and for all we know, she might have somehow served as a bit of inspiration for the character.
This one little thing, regardless of whether or not it’s true, is just a small aspect of the many ideas implemented into RWBY and its creative process.

Vibes + Vino: 4 Producers, 4 Regions
The record producer: The experience architect, the idea-lobbyist, the ditty boss.
Tumblr media
J Dilla - The Sherry Triangle I don’t know what my life was before J Dilla. I don’t know what my life was before Sherry. My first wine mentor was obsessed with Sherry and, in my naive adolescence, I followed like a Hypebeast lemming with no initial context, because who was I to voice a real opinion when my understanding of wine comprised of not knowing Malbec’s origins were in France and pronouncing Xinomavro wrong. (Plus, Sherry was having its boom with hipsters at the time so I was inundated with questions at least 3x daily.)
In retrospect, this no-quantifiable-preconception crash course to Sherry was the best way for me to fall in love with it. It’s essentially a scrappy, off-beat drink if you think about it, and transparent in showcasing distinct soil characteristics, especially by the Albariza soil. #JDillaIsBae because of the same scrappy, off-beat production. Even in the very beginnings as Jay Dee evolved into being a full-time producer, he reminds me of the transparent, against-the-grain nature of the sax & percussion somersaults of 1940s bebop. He constantly built upon his blended style and didn’t overhaul it for anything or anyone. Kind of like the blended nature of Sherry itself, and how new oak isn’t really a solera thing when it comes to Sherry because the tannins would impede the development of flor. Or, even the fact that barrels are preferably fixed instead of replaced/discarded. After J Dilla, everything I thought I knew about hip-hop changed. After Sherry, I opened a new door to beverage geeking. Both run-ins are IRL examples of the often imitated, never duplicated two.
No I.D. - Burgundy My love affair with No I.D. is severely skewed being from Chicago and by my love affair with No I.D.-touched Common albums, specifically 1997’s One Day It'll All Make Sense—which is yours truly’s personal Holy Grail reach for soul searching, psyche demon slaying, and figuring-life-out moments. In the world of hip-hop production as a whole, on the surface it may not seem like No I.D.’s kudos is even comparable to James Yancey levels, but beneath it all it is… and then some. It's real easy to seperate the diehards, casual fans, and curious listeners of No I.D. when the masses only attribute his success to being a master sampler. (Not to discredit the latter by any means, because his artistry of the sample is his muscle—often euphonically ambitious yet golden.)
No I.D.’s music touch is practically sacred. Hell, he’s like the trillion dollar CPG industry in producer form—reputation in a broad space and honing his craft to flow with and stay relevant in current and future markets. He’s what Burgundy is to the wine world, and Burgundy’s domination comes in its own variant of CPG: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Gamay. Yet outsider looking in, a snapshot of Burgundy in population and size might provoke assumptions that the region’s reach would barely make a dent in the world of wine. However, its influence has proven otherwise—and it’s a hell of a lot to examine. It’s to a point where I have to stop myself from feeling defeated when sinking into any Burgundy topic because I constantly feel a million steps behind in the the elaborate, convoluted technicalities. Much like how some winemakers have set Burgundies as a benchmark for influencing their own style of wines, No I.D.'s production style has taken other production artists to new heights. He’s a Veteran for a reason, infiltrating nearly three decades of music.
One No I.D. standout for me in the last five years would have to be "Higher" on Rihanna's ANTI - and it's barely 2 minutes long. In its slurred, vampy nature, it is profoundly focused. That's kind of how he bulldozed even through this next gen of artists - not taking the big shots right away, making punches where it mattered, and leveling up himself. He took time off, got inspired. Even simply relating back to Rihanna as a brand powerhouse, if you think about how influential the Fenty brand has combated the CPG sector of cosmetics when people felt the market was already saturated by celebrity releases, that's No I.D. as a producer. Preeminently, he’s been in the thicks of it, the cornerstone of it, molding a stockpile of careers.
Babyface - Willamette Valley These two scream the clashing dichotomies of the Old School and New School. On one side we have a marveled producer, the master of the dramatic R&B hook and sometimes dubbed the Quincy of my generation (although no one will ever be Quincy). On the flip side we have a region just as dramatic in its moist climate and consuming diurnal shifts, yet it's also a region compared to the likes of Burgundy probably more often than social media sees a contouring vid posted by a Kardashian (although Willamette will never be Burgundy).
Willamette Valley not only is an significant player in Oregon, but the Pacific Northwest as a whole. It's one of the larger American Viticultural Areas and as a New World region, it may not get enough of its due credit when the comparatives are hypersensitive to Old World traditions and fixated on what Willamette Valley is not in comparison to those Old World counterparts. But to me, Willamette is a mélange of the most intriguing characteristics of both Old World and New World wines. Minerality, mutually rustic and earthy - all with a nominal but distinctive fruit personality that is essentially the anti-Burgundy. Babyface initially was met with similar caution in the beginning of his production career - meeting a new generation of R&B listeners while the genre's core at the time could, in essence, be a genre quarterbacked by nobody other than Quincy Jones. Alongside L.A. Reid, he became the bridge to the New School from the Old School in the age of 90's R&B.
Bob Thiele - Tuscany Can you even put your finger on how many times a jazz recording has been sampled? Even if you drilled down to just one work, the gold standard of A Love Supreme, you'd be met with a hefty list. That influence is just one piece of the pie, and only takes sampling use and one album into account. But Bob Thiele's reach stretches much further - Thiele is one of the great names of jazz. His technical proficiency was ahead of his time, and the influence of his work has criss-crossed across generations of listeners and genres.
This kind of intertwining evolution makes me think of the Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc lovechild: Cabernet Sauvignon. As widely acknowledged as Bob Thiele is in jazz, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are the most planted wine grape worldwide. It’s French in origin, but Italy and its history with the grape is very Bob Thiele - eqsue compelling, in particular. The initial rise of what is now the "Super Tuscan" was met with much controversy as wine laws pre-1980s did not accommodate the foreign grapes then. Eventually grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon would round out the red blend in following years -- winemakers saw it as a way to improve wine quality -- but if emjois existed during the time, any befuzzled/sneering look emjoi would’ve fit right into the reception of the Super Tuscan prior to actually coining the term "Super Tuscan".
In a world of countless Bob Thiele chartmakers, the "What A Wonderful World" project with George David Weiss and Louis Armstrong was not as honored upon release, and was received in similar fashion to how a Super Tuscan was viewed in Italy in the 1980s. Just like how the intention of adding foreign grapes to indigenous Italian varieties was to improve wine quality, "What A Wonderful World" was a tune set out to bridge gaps in race and culture at a time when race relations were beyond heated. Instead, the song faced criticism for simplistic lyrics and for an ignorance toward the world's state at the time. It would take years before the song was even seen as a standard.
