Batfam and Rogues’ Costumes for Damian’s First Halloween

Context: For his first proper Halloween, Damian got really gung-ho about dressing up so Scarecrow and Jason (who both thought it was really cute) got every rogue and Batfam member to dress up and insisted (since Damian was) that everyone pick a costume that reflected their cultural background.  A lot of rogues were hesitant but Damian holds that it was the best Halloween he ever had.

Anyway, list’s below the cut, if a rogue isn’t listed it’s because they said no when asked to dress up and no amount of begging changed their mind or I forgot about them.  Leaving this untagged but you know, have fun.

I’ve made a new character for this world! Viktor the Wendigo

BIO:

First off, he smells really bad, rotten flesh bad. While he coats himself with a strong deodorant, those with sensitive noses can still tell when he's near. Viktor has chronic anxiety and is usually a bundle of nerves. Having moved to the city, he's doing his best to recover from his binge-eating disorder. He gets excited around cats and birds when he hasn't kept his hunger in check and has previously been caught chasing rats at night. The bones around his clothing are flexible enough to where he can get his clothing specially designed to be secured on by them. He occasionally does business favors for the Knight family, but his occupation is unknown. He stands about 7`6″ or 231 cm tall.

I really like @scyrel Viktor character. I needed a little break so I tried to take a crack at drawing him. I like his face and the way his neck bends. It reminds me of a vulture for some reason. I hope I got the colors right.

Hey, uh! I know that you seem to really be excited by Viktor, but wendigos are really important to Algonquin culture, they're not really for people to make OCs of and they're not cryptids. They're the definition of evil in many cultures, so it's disrespectful to remove it from that context, especially if you're not from that culture yourself. The writingwithcolor blog has some really nice detailed posts about it if you want to know more, but I would recommend making Viktor something else.

I think I’m allowed to make a goofy wendigo character if I want to. If you’re going to say I can’t use a creature of folklore, then how about complaining to the studio behind Until Dawn or the thousands of artists before me who have made ghastly works representing them, or are you suggesting I can’t make a silly wendigo, but only represent it as the evil being it’s supposed to be?

Werewolves, vampires, devils and demons also embody evil and they too are part of other cultures across the world. Does this mean I can’t draw them either? I was baptized and taught to believe in God and fear Satan, but I’ll still draw Satan in glasses going golfing with Jesus if I want to. It’s not hurting anybody, it’s comedic and yeah, some will take offense to this, but I doubt this will call upon Satan or the holy son himself to save me a place in purgatory.

As far as I understand Native American beliefs, you don’t speak to them about wendigos or skin-walkers near or around their homes, the creature must also not see their faces. If I’m sitting at home, drawing one of these but not truly believing in them, I don’t think the butterfly effect is going to cause the death of someone I’ve never met or seen myself. Those who are truly scared of these creatures really don’t need to be worried about what I create because they can follow someone else. 

Viktor the wendigo stays stinky and wears a purple suit.
