"Hannibal, I don't care if you're head of the Temple, a hero of the Wasteland or God himself in my tent. Why the hell did you send word that Arcade was dead?"

Truth is, the Followers have never had a problem with the guy before and he's probably got a reason for his actions, but that's the point here. Too many well intentioned cookies go bad because nobody ever dared giving them a kick in the pants, from Papa Khan on down. And I certainly won't let Hannibal go down that path.

"He asked me to," Hannibal says, very mellow as he lights a cigarette. The rifle across my lap interests him not at all.

If I wasn't furious with him I could be getting on quite well with this guy. "We mourned him. They tortured him. Two of my best friends went mad saving him..."

"I believe it was that eventuality he hoped to avoid," Hannibal says. "Had you come and pressed me, after independently verifying his life, I would have offered what details I knew. And the reasoning he gave for keeping his secret."

He sounds so damn reasonable. "Is there anything you can tell me that's useful now, then?"

"That might depend as much on your intentions as the truth."

I don't want reasonable any more. I want to be that teenager who ran with the Great Khans and snapped his fingers at initiation. The man who forced his way into First Recon and made them glad to have me, who walked through Flagstaff in NCR regalia and came out alive."

And for all that, I wasn't there for Boone when it mattered. Twice; and he's the one paying the price for it.

"Autumn's head on a plate. Next question?"

"Tell me how that goal is worth more," Hannibal says, tapping the butt into an ashtray, "then the communique I recently received from Colonel Autumn, offering Enclave help in taking down Ashur's regime. Because I have sought that goal for many years, it is the most monstrous of the hydra-headed snakes defiling the Capitol- but I would not enter into this alliance lightly." He is still, now. "Or without asking the opinion of those who have the most reason for rightful anger."

Oh, Brahmin shit. Shit.

It's all right for us to be pussyfooting around here in Nacochtank, where Rivet City security is literally within sniping distance and the cactus water draws in all the caps and mercs a settlement could want; it's a good start, a base for the Followers, but it won't change anything by itself. It's a place for people to begin dreaming about change.

What Hannibal's offering now, this is what the four of us had started planning for, late nights watching Daisy and envisioning a skein of hope across the wasteland. Showing isolated communities that they were connected, that they had common interests.

Why the hell does it have to be me who remembers all this, when I don't have Arcade's vision or Carla's perception or Boone's knowledge.

"I would say you'd be a fool, not to assume that the Enclave will claim it afterwards- and that's simply replacing slavers, isn't it?"

"Simone agrees with you. She would have us ally with the Brotherhood, but they have seemed...curiously deaf, to all the rumors. And there's something else which I'll confess is pure politics- my rendezvous with Colonel Autumn is at the Lincoln Memorial. I'm told they'll be activating Project Purity very soon."

"I've only been here a year and even I know that's poppycock."

"Possibly. But if the Tidal Basin begins running clean, and the Enclave can truthfully say they gave that to everyone..." Not troubled, maybe, but he's contemplative. "Events are advancing apace. Is your community strong enough, to risk Eden's wrath?"

I want things to be as simple, as a target outlined in blood.

"No. We're a mix of half-trained Followers and tired farmers, it's a refuge for those who aren't strong enough for the wasteland. So you're right, I'll have to let Autumn keep his head. But I'll tell you this- work with him and you'll rue the day."

"...the choices always seemed easier when it was simply a matter of your death or theirs, didn't they?"

"Now that, I would have to agree with."

Boone

Someone will tell me, I guess, why we named her Daisy. I don't feel much like asking.

She knows me, that should be a kind of comfort. I can hold her, joggle her on my knee while she sucks from a Brahmin's witch teat, she doesn't mind. Her soft dark hair is thick for an infant, already like her mother's.

Keep swinging back and forth. One moment I don't know how I could have ever left her. Then she'll start crying for no reason and someone else will offer to take her, make her smile with a silly face, and I don't know if I ever knew her at all.

I ran off a lot, I'm told. Going around with the Lone Wanderer even when I had a baby at home.

It starts making some kind of sense when people start telling me their stories. How they'd be held captive in a Super Mutant larder, or a Raider base, and they'd given up hope before we showed up.

"Your minigun and his pistol! And you two could take down anything in your path, believe me."

For a while I thought, maybe quit using guns. Can't shoot with the baby around. She deserves more than glimpses of a father- or a corpse.

Last night I broke that promise. Stole Manny's hunting rifle, the apple of his eye, took it out to the Rivet City shooting range.

Making out a target in the dark, night wind trying to tear my beret off and the cold working through my California jacket, I wasted two clips of ammo and felt more alive than I have since Arcade crashed that Vertibird.

Worries me, whether I ever loved my daughter that much at all.

Chapter 0-5: Countdown to Extinction

Thrall has escaped the underground caverns, but he's not out of danger yet.

He's greeted by the sea witch as he emerges.

He then makes his way back to his landing site.

Uh oh. Time to get out of here. They've been working on repairing the ships, but they're not finished quite yet.

We'll have to defend this position until the repairs are complete.

This is our first purely defensive mission. We just need to weather the sea witch's attacks until the ships are ready to go.

Witch Doctor: Troll caster who specializes in placing immobile wards. Much like Shaman, has Adept and Master Training upgrades that unlock additional spells.

Sentry Ward: Places an invisible ward that gives vision of an area, and can see other invisible units.

Stasis Trap: This invisible ward detonates when an enemy approaches, stunning all units in a radius around it. It takes a few seconds to arm itself after being placed.

Healing Ward: A ward that heals all allied units around it.

Witch Doctors make pretty good healers once their Master upgrade is learned. Stasis Traps also came in handy for delaying incoming attack waves.

Ensnare: Upgrade for Raiders that allows them to hurl nets to trap enemies. Enemies bound by this can't move, but can still attack. If a flying unit is ensnared, it's bound to the ground and can be attacked as a ground unit.

We can check the nearby villages for a few trolls who are happy to join up with Thrall.

Goblin Merchant: Neutral building that sells items for heroes.

I didn't actually buy anything from this, but I still felt like pointing it out since it's pretty close to my base. There's also a fountain of health nearby, which can heal up damaged units.

Fortress: Final upgrade of the Great Hall that unlocks the full tech tree. Unlocks additional upgrades, including Shaman and Witch Doctor Master Training.

The sea witch herself joins in the attacks, and she's a level 6 hero as well. She summons water elementals to help her fight. I made sure to send Thrall at her whenever she appeared.

I also had to fight off many waves of minions. I originally had Watch Towers at every entrance to the base, but they got wrecked a lot, and I eventually switched to using a mobile army to defend each point as needed.

Brute Strength: Adds +100 HP and +3 damage to Grunts.

Troll Regeneration: Improves the HP regeneration of all Troll units.

Halfway there. So far so good.

Thrall leveled up to 6, enabling me to learn his ultimate ability.

Earthquake: Causes the ground to tremble, severely slowing units and dealing damage over time to buildings in a small area. This is a channeling spell, meaning the hero can't move or attack while casting it.

Sadly this isn't that useful here, since I'm not attacking any enemy bases in this mission. Still, it's good to have regardless.

Upkeep penalties are another new addition to this game, added to ensure the focus on small armies. If your total food use is 50 or more, you suffer a 30% penalty on all gold income from mines. (Peons will only bring 7 gold per trip, instead of 10.) If it goes above 80, we enter High Upkeep and the penalty is 60%. This is pretty severe, and we only want to suffer it if we know we need that many units, and can afford it.

The sea witch showed up for some repeat attempts. Thankfully she wasn't able to break through my defenses.

Nearly there. As the timer gets close to completion, the enemy attacks become more frequent and severe.

These siege golems are immune to magic as usual, and seem to only be able to attack buildings. They're really annoying and easily demolished my remaining towers. Good thing there's not much time left.

With one minute left, it's time to make our last stand.

The underworld minions send out one final attack.

Thrall's forces are still holding strong, though.

And there we go.

Thrall and his men have safely escaped the island.

This concludes the prologue campaign. Now we can actually start getting into the main story.

actually, because i really need to finish my new theme and need new verse blurbs, here’s a more in depth look at my current/in-use verses, with links to full writeups as available.

mcu: this is boilerplate. i’m a canon tony, this is a canon verse. follows the events from iron man through infinity war for the moment, including the tie-in comics iron man 2: public identity, iron man 2: agents of shield, iron man: the coming of the melter, iron man 3 prelude, marvel’s avengers: age of ultron prelude - the scepter’d isle, marvel’s captain america: civil war prelude infinite, marvel’s avengers: infinity war prelude, and marvel’s avengers: endgame prelude. also includes the post-iron man 3 short about the mandarin. everything not covered/discussed in mcu canon is plugged with 616 continuity canon.

616: what it says on the tin. covers most of the runs from about 2008-present, including the new tony stark: iron man, against my greater judgment, though that may change in the future if it keeps tanking in story. in reality, this actually covers everything post-heroes reborn, but to make it simple we’ll say it’s wibbly wobbly because comics. also includes heavy snippets still in play from classic invincible iron man.

classic: from his first appearances in tales of suspense up to the inception of heroes reborn. or, if you prefer, original flavor tony stark, the cool suave businessman with the aloof nature, party boy ways, and injured heart, reliant on his rechargeable chest piece, as he also has a double identity as the golden avenger known as iron man. poses as his own bodyguard. jetsetter. people love or hate him, but most want to be him. if only they knew how much his bum ticker isolated him. a ton of fridged girlfriends. later physical ailments include: paralysis from the waist down. degenerative nervous system. a cranky ticker more than you can shake a stick at. literally dying and being cryogenically frozen.

616 meets mcu: this covers any time comicverse tony is thrown at mcu versions of the people he knows. things to note include being taller. he has blue eyes. his tech is more advanced. his speech patterns differ heavily. recovering alcoholic, coffee is fine no matter how shitty it is. he has more years as a superhero under his belt at this point. his fears and points of stress differ from mcu tony’s quite a bit, and his reactions are different. he and pepper are barely on speaking terms (generously speaking). he’s different, and it’s obvious he’s different.

broke: mcu-based verse that includes corporate espionage and tony stark having to keep his head down and learning to live under the table paycheck to under the table paycheck until he can muster what he needs to make a frontal assault on regaining what’s rightly his. a verse where tony’s at his absolute lowest, still determined to retain the phoenix metaphor and rise from the ashes of the misfortune thrust upon him.

superior iron man: hiding the fact that he’s still under the scarlet witch’s inversion spell, tony goes full tilt diva, his main concerns being money, power, and fame. he starts drinking again. he makes san francisco his own personal big brother state, where he watches the city like a hawk by day while shilling extremis as a beauty enhancer, and parties like it’s 1999 at his new home on alcatraz island by night. is still iron man, as long as there’s something in it for him. will partially be at fault for the destruction of the 616 universe (it gets better).

hypervelocity: tony’s attacked in his own lab by the mind-emulationware mechs known as “beautiful garbage”, and his newest iteration of the iron man suit forced an upload or a copy of his brain patterns to get him out of there. the wetware is damaged, and the suit dumps it before it bleeds out in the suit cavity, and thus that suit, with the ability to walk, talk, and think exactly like tony stark (albeit full of bugs) is born, to unravel the mystery of the attack and attempt to stop the emulation program that caused it.

ai: after being punched into a literal coma during a battle with captain marvel/carol danvers over the fate of miles morales and concerning an inhuman by the name of odysseus’s increasingly violent visions of the future, and with even hank mccoy being afraid to even draw blood on tony after seeing what tony’s been doing to himself over the years, tony’s ai comes online, as a mentor to riri williams/ironheart and to help against the clone captain america with those of the mount. he’s twice as sassy with quadruple the processing speed, and he’s got some weird feelings about being the recreated consciousness of a living person suddenly finding itself with no physical body.

noir: a businessman who likes to play adventurer for a men’s magazine, along with his best friend james rhodes and their new reporter pepper potts, writing under a male pseudonym, tony stark on the surface has it all in the late 1930s. beautiful women, exciting adventures, and loads of money. but all it does is hide his desperate search for a cure for his dying heart, as he’s forced to wear a metal chest piece that has to be charged frequently to even keep himself alive.

director of shield: mcu-based version of tony’s time as the director of shield. after everything that occurs after captain america: the winter soldier, and the fall of shield, an attempt is made to resurrect it with tony stark at the helm as fury’s replacement (hand-picked). he stresses transparency, he stresses equality, and most of all, he just wants to find a way to balance being iron man with having to deal with the day-to-day bullshit of international bureaucracy.

sorcerer supreme: based on the 90s “what if?” one shot comic. tony was the cause of the accident that injured stephen strange’s hands, and, feeling supremely guilty about the entire thing, searches for ways to give stephen his dexterity and life back. it leads him to becoming the sorcerer supreme, despite that inherent dislike of magic he has, and he combines the iron man technology with the mystical forces he gains a hold over in that quest for a cure.

guardians of the galaxy: mcu flavor for tony’s time as an active gotg. after civil war, on a break with pepper, and feeling about as great about things as someone laying facedown in a gutter possibly can, tony puts his mobile armory into space, tinkers together a suit for deep space exploration, and takes off, losing himself for a while among the stars. threat is going to come from there, sure, but there’s going to be opportunity, as well. it’s a useful thing to find out who’s friend, and who’s foe, and see what there is to see in the black expanses of space.

supernatural: the other family business. being a founder of shield and everything he took to his grave wasn’t the only secret he was keeping, and this was one maria was in on as well. too bad tony doesn’t stumble across it until after he’s already become iron man, where saving the world is so tied into his moral code he can’t look away. if he goes missing for a few days, it’s fine, it’s chill. he’s just taking a breather, not poking around at things he only still half-believes in even when he’s seen them with his own two eyes. the biggest skeptic hunter you’ll ever meet.

fallout prewar: mcu continuity up to the beginning of iron man 3, against fallout’s prewar as a backdrop. tony stark is who he is, he does what he does, but he also is someone certain government agencies would love to tear down, because he’s a rabble rouser against the war, and has no problem hogging the iron man technology for himself instead of sharing with the military. he also has no problem sharing the dirty secrets he finds out with the press. full write up can be found here.

fallout new vegas: tony as the infamous courier six. left in stasis in a vault in california, tony comes to years and years after the devastation of the bombs to a world vastly changed from the one he remembers, and in a vault full of ghouls. once topside, and once reoriented into the world, he ends up something of a jack of all trades until he takes that fateful job with the mojave express, and gets two to the head for his trouble. independent path with the yes-man aligned ending, details of choices and all dlcs available as needed until i get off my ass and do a full replaythrough and write up. keeps the spine from big mt, but his heart and brain are back where they belong. locked elijah in the vault. nuke launch stopped (ed-e repaired after). evacuated the sorrows.

fallout 4 sole survivor: still needs a full write up, but tony as the sole survivor. does not take the shock at the change in the world well at first. eventually pulls his shit together enough to get shit done, but can’t touch a suit, can’t think about the suit, will take some time to even toy with the idea of possibly touching a suit again before he actually can. minutemen and railroad aligned, destroys the bos and institute. peaceful ending with all far harbor factions. spares the mechanist. destroys the raiders at nuka world and turns the parks over to the minutemen. question information as needed until i get a full write up done.

fallout 4 companion: tony’s been in new york since the bombs dropped. there are huge chunks of it that are still uninhabitable, much like boston’s glowing sea, but the parts that are? he’s started on a grand rebuilding project, because he’s got nothing but time: the arc reactor’s kept his heart pumping well past its expiration date. when the bos slow rolls past new york, he follows them into boston, mostly because he’s paranoid and cagey (with good reason in the wasteland) and partially out of curiosity. available as a companion for sole survivors, some restrictions apply, please see this write up for more details.

fallout 76 dweller: locked up with a bunch of other big brains after the bombs, tony’s that guy. you know. the one you read about in the terminal. the one that kept hacking things. once topside again, he sheds that vault tec blue and yellow as quickly as he can and sees about setting things right. a member of the responders. a mole in [redacted]. fire breather. rebuilding the world has to start somewhere, so it might as well be west virginia.

dwemer: the last surviving dwemer, finally peeking his head out of his lab in its pocket plane of oblivion to find the nords are at it again, dragons are still doing their thing, his people have just flat out vanished, and that skyrim is still cold as balls. often gets mistaken as a very tall bosmer. still calls the dunmer the chimer out of sheer smartassedness. swung on rolf in windhelm and ends up in jail more times than you can shake a stick at.

single parent au: handed off a baby under some shady as hell circumstances, unable to find out anything and secretly glad he can’t find out anything about her in the end, tony pulls some strings and sophie stark ends up hitting the jackpot as far as adoptive parents go. tony had thought just being iron man was hard, but now he’s balancing ballet practice and pta meetings with saving the world.

Just missing the Synchro Boxes but these are the packs I have bought from (except for the 1 pack per purchase I do. I'm pretty sure you can guess from some posts which that one went to and I am so happy because there are only a few packs left [though still not the card I want from it].

The only one in the Synchro era I haven't bought are the 2 recent new additions.

Some of the old boxes are good but... unlike the new boxes they (cards) do not have a lot of Synergy with each other. Like stuff like Gem Knights and X-sabers are archetypes from kinda new and old boxes are good but unless you are running certain archetypes (or want fairies [Konami give us more fairies you cowards!]) they aren't really good.

Wonders of the Sky is the only old box I made a purchase from since I was using Crow at the time and for the Winged Beast monsters plus some banish support cards and also for the Mist Valley field spell but I don't even use it compared to Harpie's Hunting Ground. Using Atmosphere was fun though and Mai's special lines for Birdface are cool.

Servants of the King was when the Last Kc Cup was running around. Some people recommended to get Wall of Disruption and boooooooooooyyyy. I remember before owning it puting a Reverse Trap in my Gem Knight deck since it is ridiculously common (it's not #2 in most popular cards used in ranked duel for nothing). It did pay off in one duel against Vampires (because field Spell) and an Odion player when I was using Yusei. I loved it when afterward I used Tourmaline's effect but they ended up Floodgating me but fortunately I had Gem Knight Crystal in hand and since it was a special summon I could still tribute summon Lapis and Topaz. It not only has that but Draining Shield for Aromages. By the time Kc Cup finished I just decided to reset the box as I got the most of it and was only missing 35 packs with some other SRs I knew I probably wouldn't use (Ironically I have 2 Birthrights but I don't recall resetting the box just because of it)

Then there are the selection boxes but those cost actual money and are a limited time. Usually they introduce new cards that will be released in future boxes which was how I managed to get a Shard of Greed, Gozuki, Super Rush Headlong and some other common cards I still use without buying from their boxes like White Magician Pikeru and Crystal Seer (usually for farming/scouting out certain cards from deck), heck even 1 unhappy Girl that's common for Unhappy Ra.

Reason I wasn't as motivated to buy from volume 2 was well... It had spellbook as a SR and I'd rather go back to Visions of Ice to also get Blizzard Princess and Tricky along with Dragon Ice. They also had Batteryman which I kind of want to go back to for the last Gem Knight Fusion. They had U.A. but unless you have the whole archetype it's not good and the box has Galaxy Cyclone too and Gates to the Dark World. I also wasn't as motivated to get many of the new cards introduced in it outside of Masked Hero Dian, Necrovalley, and Night Beam. Buy a box that soon costs real money just for 3 cards? I can wait for the main/mini boxes those cards will come in as the previous volume had Offerings to the Doomed and that one is in the Stardust Box which is a great box in general since it has all the Blue Eyes Support with Silver's Cry and Paleozoic Hallucinogenic. It's also where I got Tuned Magician which I have used a lot for Spellcaster Decks and my early Anti Trap version, and use Dark Elf to help me with Arkana's unlock mission. The only thing it lacks is good backrow removal unless you run X Sabers for Hyunlei which that thing is insane when I used her with Leo. It's practically a Synchro Vision Hero Witch Raider but not as flexible since you have to Synchro Summon instead of Tribute monsters and traps (and it can only be 3 Spells/Traps so if the opponent has a field spell [highly unlikely but still] you have to decide which cards to pop unlike Witch Raider that can be all.)

I won't end up buying all the boxes as that is not my goal. Heck that is impossible unless you are rich and can invest real money spending it all on fake cards.

I really don't know what to main though. Like some players have it all figured out with Vampires, Koaki, Blue Eyes, Masked Hero, Fur Hires, Dragunity but for me? I just want to have different decks depending on which character I am using (except for Vylons, that was for Tea but too short on time so I switched to a spellcaster deck since Dark Magician was her Main).

I don't want Vamps, I don't like LP cost strategies even if they recover with Vampire's Domain (although Bandit Vampires with Bandit Keith appear popular). Koaki are a no go as they self destruct unless they have certain cards in hand (and even in loaner deck challenges it's pretty bad unless you have Diamond Core), Blue Eyes is a heck no! I remember using them one time for ranked and it ain't a fun option for me unless I am skill farming for Seto. It's so bricky too even with the whole Arkana BE due to A Trick Up His Sleeve to always have Cosmo Brain in starting hand (Konami nerf that skill since that is originally for Dark Magician). Masked Hero ain't fun. I didn't have fun in loaner deck challenge with them since it is basically summon Drilldark to special summon another Destiny Hero, attack and then attack use Masked Change to avoid trap/deal finishing blow (recharge and get another Masked Change if you destroy a monster).

Nothing really speaks out to me to get these cards or run this archetype (except Aromages and they are free regardless) Like at first it was Gem Knights but in this meta I don't think I want to run that. I do love the Anti Trap but there have been times when it can brick even when using Balance. I remember I would have Tribute Burial just in case to summon Blizzard Princess and Vision Hero Witch Raider during the early days. One of the recent King of Decks did interest me as it ran Blizzard Princess but I would need Legion of the Fiend Jester for it which is in an old box that I would have to reset 3 times for.

The Green Knight Review: A King Arthur Movie Imbued with Dark Magic

It’s been observed that to create, you must first destroy. There’s truth in this axiom, although at least in the case of Hollywood it’s worth a partial amendment. First, you must understand what it is you are destroying to make way for something new. Take the poems and tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, including Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: As centuries old IP, these stories have been adapted countless times, including recently—and often by filmmakers with no greater concern for their appeal than the public domain title they’ve decided to exploit.

Well, the team writer-director David Lowery assembled for his and A24’s The Green Knight understand Sir Gawain intimately. It’s there in the first scene when the alliterative prose from the 14th century poem is quoted near verbatim. And yet, by juxtaposing these words next to Dev Patel’s yet-to-be-knighted Gawain sitting on the throne of Camelot, stoic in all his kingly majesty, Lowery and company signal they’re doing more than just repeating an oft-told yarn. There is a darker force at work here, which can be as unsettling as the image of Gawain’s crowned head inexplicably being lit aflame at the end of this sequence.

The Green Knight is thus both a student of the past and a well-meaning raider of it; this is a film which will honor a story J.R.R. Tolkien singled out as one of the greatest works of English literature, as well as gracefully deconstruct it. There’s a singular, faintly mad vision at play in Lowery’s The Green Knight, and it’s led to one of the best films ever adapted from Arthurian lore.

When we meet Patel’s Gawain in earnest in the movie, he is clearly not yet a knight or a man of honor. After all, it’s Christmas morning when he’s awakened from his stupor in a brothel. As the nephew of old King Arthur (Sean Harris), Gawain is imbued by Patel with an earnest desire to live up to the laurels already bestowed on the Knights of the Round Table, but there’s also something unmistakably desperate and hungry about him when he arrives at his uncle’s court for a feast.

It is there that Arthur invites Gawain to sit by his throne on the high dais, next to Queen Guinevere (Kate Dickie), for the first time. Several chairs are conspicuously empty, including one intended for Gawain’s mother (Sarita Choudhury), but Gawain can sense his station is on the rise, even before the Green Knight (Ralph Ineson) enters. Carved from the literal leafy greens and weeds of the earth, Ineson’s knight better resembles a pagan god than any sort of man-at-arms. Yet it’s arms that concern this Yuletide intruder.

The Green Knight comes offering a game: Any man who has the courage to strike at him with a sword as harsh or kindly as he pleases can do so freely… so long as he agrees to endure the same blow in one year’s time. Gawain leaps at the opportunity to prove his valor, beheading the Green Knight in one smooth motion. The Emerald deity then picks up his rolling skull. It then laughs. A bargain’s been struck and they’ll meet again at the Green Chapel next Christmas.

The setup is painfully simple, including its roots in medieval notions of chivalry and the type of magical realism where talking severed heads are as common as ladies living in lakes. Yet the draw of Lowery’s film is how it encases viewers into this world with surreal splendor. There has not been another movie this year as sumptuously designed or elegantly framed. Nearly every shot of The Green Knight—particularly in the climactic Green Chapel—looks as if it was ripped from a fantasy novel’s cover or a 19th century canvas, and the inclusion of elements like ghosts, giants, and talking foxes (all of which Gawain will encounter on his quest to find that blasted chapel) only heightens the peculiar beauty of the piece.

Lowery is also allowed to lean into the painterly lushness of the piece because of the vitality and humanity Patel brings to every single scene he’s on screen: which is nearly all of them. Despite starring in a Best Picture winner more than a decade ago, Patel is an actor who’s seemed strangely underrated by the industry. As of late, the natural leading man has broken out with winning roles as David Copperfield and in Lion, but as Gawain he may have at last found a vehicle to display the full range of his charisma to a larger audience.

Patel’s Gawain is neither a hero nor a revisionist fiend. Rather he’s a well realized portrait of paradoxes. Here’s a young man who wishes to be noble and true, but is driven on his seemingly suicidal quest to find the Green Knight’s chapel entirely out of fear of shame and what others might say; he fears death to the point of seeming cowardly, and yet is eager to face the Green Knight’s axe, if only to learn what this game might really be about. Gawain is a flawed, potentially doomed protagonist, but Patel keeps the pathos of the would-be knight always at the surface, even during the character’s most scandalous and selfish moments.

The rest of the cast is also formidable in helping The Green Knight weave its enchantment. Despite being covered under makeup and prosthetics, The Witch’s Ineson brings a playfulness to the title character somewhat akin to a Disney character with a bloodlust; and Alicia Vikander pulls double duty in dual roles that it would be a spoiler to detail beyond that they represent twin sides of femininity for Gawain—and the inherent limitations of living your life by chivalric codes or medieval thinking. However, in one of these roles Vikander gets the best monologue in the film where she raises more questions than answers about what this quest is all about… including why is a green knight green?

That may be what challenges audiences most. Despite being based on a well-worn folk tale, The Green Knight is not an easy movie to follow once Gawain accepts his fate and leaves Camelot behind for a wilderness drenched in magic and weirdness. Shrouded in mysteries, both medieval and modern, it is designed to confound and intrigue, and probably be viewed more than once. It is a bit like discovering an ancient tome of witchcraft that’s not intended for young eyes. You’re not entirely sure what its incantations mean, but you cannot look away. For some that will be infuriating, but I found it spellbinding.

The Green Knight opens Friday, July 30.

We have your full rundown of everything Marvel revealed at Comic Con this year, including some details you may have missed!

The biggest event of this year’s San Diego Comic Con was the Marvel Studios Panel which took place last Saturday. Hosted by Jessica Chobot and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the panel revealed dates and titles for 11 upcoming films and TV shows. The panel began with Feige introducing some of the production team for Marvel, who were all brought on stage and celebrated for their hard work. Feige then announced that within the next few days Avengers: Endgame will surpass Avatar as the highest grossing film worldwide. After that it was time to announce the upcoming projects.

The first project up was Eternals. Feige described it as something they hadn’t done before with the MCU, a group of immortals who have lived on earth for 35 thousand years. He stated the film would be full Jack Kirby before introducing director Chloé Zhao (The Rider). She said her draw beyond wanting to make a Marvel film was the idea of exploring what it means to be a human through the eyes of the Eternals. They then brought out the cast. Richard Madden (Rocketman) will portray Ikaris, Kumail Nanjani (Stuber) will portray Kingo, Lauren Ridloff (The Walking Dead) will portray Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) will portray Phastos, Salma Hayek (Frida) will portray Ajak, Lia McHugh (The Lodge) will portray Sprite, Don Lee (Paboos) will portray Gilgamesh, and finally Angelina Jolie (Maleficent) will portray Thena.

Richard Madden explained that the Eternals are a race of immortal aliens sent to earth by the celestials to protect humankind from the deviants. Lauren Ridloff stated she’s honored to play the first deaf hero in the MCU. Kumail Nanjani stated this was his first time getting into Hall H after eight comic cons, before commenting on the fact that Marvel films are a throwback to older films that had a bit of everything and weren’t just one genre. Brian Tyree Henry was asked how it felt to play a character who is known for his intelligence, that most of the geniuses in the MCU move from their hearts and he thinks Phastos does the same thing. Salma Hayek stated that she approaches leadership (as the Eternals leader) as a family thing. Since the Eternals aren’t supposed to have children, they are each others family. Angelina Jolie said she’s going to work ten times harder than she has on any other action film. Lia McHugh said the whole experience doesn’t feel real as she’s grown up watching these Marvel movies. Don Lee (aka Dong-seok Ma) stated he was excited to show the power of Gilgamesh and that he would win in a fight with the Hulk.

The next project up was The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Feige stated that the series will premiere on Disney+ in the fall of 2020, and will show what Falcon and Winter Soldier are up to post Endgame. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan then came on stage, with Mackie carrying the Captain America shield. They joked about wanting to understand each others’ characters more, and Mackie stated that this is the best job in the world. Feige then led into a video that revealed that Daniel Brühl would be returning as Baron Zemo within the series.

Feige then introduced the first film of 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of The 10 Rings on February 12th 2021. He went on to detail how the Ten Rings have been around since Iron Man, having kidnapped Tony for Obediah Stane. A video played as he explained their continued influence through helping Whiplash in Iron Man 2, the Mandarin imposter in Iron Man 3, the Ten Rings member in Ant-Man, and finally the Ten Rings coming for the Mandarin imposter in the short film All Hail the King. He stated that the real Mandarin is in this film and Tony Leung (Europe Raiders) is portraying him. Feige revealed that Awkwafina (The Farewell) is in the film as well before introducing director Destin Cretton (Short Term 12).

Cretton came on stage and said that he grew up on such island with a population that was roughly the same size as the amount of people in Hall H, so this experience is a little crazy. He then explained that it’s really special to him that he gets to be part of making the MCU more diverse. Cretton also stated that it’s been amazing to see how much planning has gone into bringing the MCU to this point with the Ten Rings. He went on to say they went through an in depth search to find the right actor to portray Shang-Chi before bringing out Simu Liu. Liu said he screen tested on Sunday and was cast on Tuesday and this whole experience was the craziest dream. He explained that his parents immigrated to Canada from China 25 years ago with the hope of making a good life for their family, and he’s happy he’s not a doctor.

Feige then announced that the Disney+ series WandaVision would debut in the spring of 2021 before bringing out Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. Olsen explained that we will see what makes Wanda Maximoff the Scarlet Witch. Bettany joked that he had no idea how Vision is in the show, but said that as they keep doing Marvel projects the stories get richer, and this is the best yet. Feige then confirmed it take place after Endgame, and that some other MCU characters we know will be in the series before announcing that Teyonah Parris (Point Blank) will portray a grown up version of Monica Rambeau from Captain Marvel. Parris came on stage and said that this is a dream come true, not only to be part of the MCU but to portray Monica.

Next up Feige introduced the Disney+ series Loki, which will premiere in the spring of 2021. He explained that the series explores where Loki disappeared to after taking the Tesseract in Endgame. Tom Hiddleston then came on stage to the crowd cheering “Loki, Loki, Loki!” Hiddleston explained that this version of the character is the 2012 Loki who had just been “Hulk Smashed” and that there’s “a lot of psychological evolution” that has yet to happen. He stated that Feige has major plans that he’s incredibly excited to be part of.

The next project reveal was Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, set for release on May 7th 2021. Feige introduced director Scott Derrickson. Derrickson stated that he loves that Doctor Strange fights villains from different planets and Universes and that we’ll see that in this film. He said he signed on for the sequel because they’re going into the gothic and horror elements, and that it will be the MCU’s first horror film. They then brought out Benedict Cumberbatch, the entire Hall sang happy birthday to him, as Friday was his birthday. He then stated that he was excited to play into the horror elements and that the story sees things trying to destroy the good Doctor. Feige then revealed that Scarlet Witch would be in the film and brought out Elizabeth Olsen once more. He then stated that WandaVision would lead into the Doctor Strange sequel. Olsen said that she’s excited to help bridge the world of the TV side and the Film side of the MCU.

Feige then revealed the first Animated project for the MCU, set for summer of 2021, the Disney+ series What If? Feige confirmed that the majority of the MCU cast members are reprising their roles in the series, before revealing that Jeffrey Wright will voice The Watcher. Wright was then brought on stage where he said he’s excited to be part of the MCU, and joked that his son will now respond to his texts. He compared the MCU to modern myth making, and explained that the Watcher is a being that watches over the entire multiverse and occasionally intervenes. He commented on the fact that the Watcher appeared first in Fantastic Four on the moon, and that they could take this character anywhere.

Feige stated that they hadn’t talked about any of the original Avengers before bringing up Jeremy Renner from the audience. They revealed a small video introducing the Disney+ Hawkeye series which is set for release in the fall of 2021, which included images of Kate Bishop who Renner stated was “the best version of Hawkeye.” Renner then explained that he gets to shepherd in an amazing character and teach Kate Bishop how to be a “superhero without superpowers.” As Renner left the stage Feige confirmed that the show will explore more of Clint Barton’s time as Ronin, presumably diving into the five year gap that happens during Endgame.

Next up Feige revealed the third film of 2021, set for release on November 5th 2021 would be Thor: Love and Thunder. Feige then brought out director Taika Waititi and stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Waititi said that “there’s nothing more powerful in the world than love,” to which Hemsworth continued “and Thunder.” Hemsworth confirmed that they haven’t read the script yet. Thompson then stated that the first thing Valkyrie needed to do as King of Asgard is to find her Queen. Then to find refuge for anyone who needs it. Waititi then said that he read the Mighty Thor storyline while filming Ragnarok, and he fell in love with it. He then brought out Natalie Portman, who will be returning to portray Jane Foster as the female Thor. Waititi then handed Portman Mojlnir, who said it felt good to wield the Hammer.

Kevin Feige then revealed the next film set for release, May 1st 2020, Black Widow. He then introduced Director Cate Shortland and cast members David Harbour (Stranger Things) who will portray Alexi, Florence Pugh who will portray Yolena Belova, O-T Fagbenle is portraying Mason, Rachel Weisz is portraying Malena, and finally Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow.

Shortland said she was drawn to the fact that Natasha has so many secrets, and this story sees her put the pieces of her self together to come out as a whole person. Johansson stated she couldn’t have played this version of Natasha 10 years ago, and she loves getting to play her as a fully realized person. She also is looking forward to showing the flawed side of her, and “wiping out the red from her ledger.” Harbour was asked if he was excited to expand his fanbase in the MCU, and joked that it’s the worst question ever because of course he was excited. Harbour was wearing a Captain America shirt and when asked about Cap he said in a Russian accent that he “[had] complicated feelings about this man.” Pugh said that her character is a sister figure to Natasha. Fagbenle’s character is a contact from Natasha’s past, he’s a fixer but there’s a bit of a romantic undercurrent. Weisz stated that she was excited to join the mythology of the MCU and loves being part of a story with a female character at the forefront. Scarlett stated they had only been shooting for 30 days before leading into footage for the film.

After the Black Widow footage, they brought everyone back out onto the stage and took a photo of the entire group. Feige then confirmed that they’re making Black Panther 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Captain Marvel 2, and Fantastic Four before teasing that they didn’t even have time to talk about Mutants. He then said that all of that had been rumored but one thing hadn’t been rumored, and introduced Mahershala Ali to the stage. Feige commented that Ali brought his own hat with him, and he placed it on his head to reveal a Blade logo, officially confirming that he would be playing the character in a film for the MCU.
