I must say, I am deriving some immensely sick pleasure using the Blood Elf "Blood" Mage (fire caster) in WarCraft III while having cheats enabled. I call down a Flame Strike, which may as well be fireball, and enemies die all at once instantaneously.

The more I think about it, the more I can’t help but think that humanizing the orcs in WC3 was Blizzard’s biggest mistake.
Not because humanizing the orcs (and yeah, that’s an unfortunate artifact of the language) is bad in of itself. No, it’s good. It’s good to show that the orcs are more complicated than a Horde of Space Locusts who are Always Chaotic Evil Baby Eaters. The way the orcs were revealed to have once been better, and then turned into tools of the demons, etc - that’s good. Really great story.
But ever since then, Blizzard spends half their time undoing any progress they let the orcs make. They should have just kept the orcs evil in the first place, if that’s what they were going to do.

The strategy and retro genres go together like peanut butter and jelly. . Some built the foundation of popular strategy games today, and others were born into genres that would eventually struggle, needing the community to help keep them alive. But even if they’re part of a familiar genre or not, most of these games can scratch a unique itch with ideas and themes that have aged extremely well. Many of these games would be difficult to sell in today's market, and because of the developers willing to dive into an industry that was still young and growing, there are some designs that can never be recreated. Some of these games influenced gaming, and others are just good damn games.

Downloading Warcraft III Reforged to play on stream later. I’ve never played a Warcraft game, only World of Warcraft, so I’m excited to try it out.
