mkay i need to go to bed because its past four am but just real quick i wanna get my feelings jotted down on what happened to byler when everythings still fresh in my head. spoilers r tagged same as ever, but under the cut just for safety

i dont want to see anyone say this wasnt queer baiting. queer baiting is a marketing technique wherein queer characters/relationships are promised outside of canon (see: numerous official social media accounts creating and supporting byler content, asking for byler to become canon, et cetera, actors/crew members talking about their relationship and how things were going to change for the better between them), while canon vaguely supports this, and then when the time comes, nothing comes of it whatsoever within the canonical material

the constant “will they wont they? you just have to wait and see but byler is definitely a possibility, and all the things which youre saying show that mike and will feel romantically about each other are in fact, showing that they feel romantically about each other!” is textbook queer baiting. it was designed so that way queer people would come watch the show, expecting to be seen and represented (and you cant tell me it didnt work: we saw the mass increase on social media, we saw byler coming up frequently at irl fan-events, etc), and then nothing came of it.

we didnt even get an undeniably queer character in will byers. the amounts of homophobia i am already seeing within the tags is astounding; already people are mocking and belittling queer people for daring to hope that they’d be supported, and acting like thats the right thing to do. anything less than him outright saying hes gay can and will be ignored- him crying in the van? because he knows how eleven cares for mike and how important she is to her, and he’s sad hes loosing his best friend. or maybe, maybe they were happy tears, tears of passion, because he’s so glad they have such a strong bond. maybe hes upset mike didnt compliment how good the painting was enough. it is going to be dismissed- he is blatantly queer coded, but that is not enough to keep homophobes away.

this was a conscious act of queer baiting. this is enabling homophobia, and during a time when rights for marginalized groups are already largely under attack in the country of stranger things’s origin. no matter how you feel about what happened, this is not a matter of opinion; the official accounts set up for byler to happen, it didn’t, and now homophobic behavior is heavily enabled.

i’ll better analyze this, and analyze the interactions between will, mike, and el tomorrow, but yeah. this was genuinely an act of homophobia, and a moment of using queer people for money.

I don’t think it was healthy of my connection with Eddie, the fact he died and how much i cried. Every time his death accidentally pops into my head it makes me absolutely sick to my stomach. Like i can’t eat, i am- i have never ever been so upset. I wish i never watched those last two episodes, just for him to die?! I feel the Duffer Brothers added him in for a fill so they didn’t have to kill one of the main characters off. Okay!? But i don’t understand, i get this was filmed before they found out like “oh shit, people really fucking love this character.” Like yeah! you do this every damn season why was i so surprised!? Maybe because i thought after all these interviews, or maybe cause of how much screen time his character was getting he was going to stay. What doesn’t make me understand is that yeah Steve was attacked by the Demobats mate not as many as Eddie but he still did. He survived. Max, she literally have broken bones and blood coming out of her damn eyes. And you’re telling me Eddie couldn’t get fucking saved but they can?
