WOTN: Requiem Infernal by Peter Fehervari
Requiem Infernal is the latest novel in the Dark Coil Series from Warhammer 40,000. Peter Fehervari writes this novel, and it is so deliciously dark that you’re best advised not to read it in the dark. Seriously. The Adepta Soroitas of the Last Candle are an isolated group, choosing to keep to their vigils over all else. Their island is remote and cannot be flown directly to, even with all the…

my roommate got me a copy of The Accursed, a Warhammer Horror anthology, last month, and I'm slowly making my way through it. The stories have been solid so far, a mix of 40k and Fantasy, generally stories of small-scale horror compared to the giant war atrocities of the main lines. And last night I got to what may well be my favorite (it will be hard for something else to top it):
"Nightbleed," by Peter Fehervari, hit this beautiful nightmarish cyberpunk atmosphere that nails me right in the Warhammer sweet spot ("teenage me craved this so much and didn't have it"); the POVs are unsettling and alienated, the setting is under threat by the looming horror from outside but already doomed by the civilized horror of the hive, and the eldritch horror element is both a basic fear and an uncanny strangeness. It's a horror story that made me feel alert and alive and fascinated.
Anyway I still have six more stories to go! But this one was so satisfying I had to tell you about it.

when you think about it combining thousands of supersoldiers literally incapable of fear with a strictly atheist, rational regime was a colossally stupid decision, and not for the reasons you're thinking of
y'know those cheesy old horror movies where the protagonists are spectacularly stupid? like, they find a spoopy book bound in suspicious leather and go, "haha lets read from this WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG" and twenty minutes later they're being chased by demon minotaurs or something. and the whole time you're screaming "NO YOU FUCKING MORONS WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT WAIT WHY ARE YOU GETTING UNDRESSED NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO HAVE SEX" and then the demon minotaurs kill them while they're having loud passionate sex because god forbid horny teenagers should ever have fun. ok so hear me out, astartes and primarchs in the pre-heresy are the same as the dumbass teenagers, except for the sex-having part (i think they T-pose at each other instead)
think about it. THEY KNOW NO FEAR. they're missing one of the key instincts we possess for recognizing dangerous situations. most people who find a spoopy book bound in suspicious leather are gonna be, y'know, spooped spooked. they won't want anything to do with it. the more anxious/scared will straight up leave. but astartes literally can't get spooked! they might burn the book for being xenos filth or something but beyond that there's nothing to balance out natural curiosity and/or lust for war trophies.
and this combines really badly with the imperium's rationalism! see, even if you don't fear the spoopy book, superstition/religion/fairy tales/etc. still provide a powerful incentive to stay away from it. you're gonna look at it and go, wow, that book looks satanic, messing with it might summon demon minotaurs, i should stay away. but the imperium actively discourages that line of thought! there's no way the spoopy book can do any harm, it's just a spoopy looking book! in fact, you SHOULD read the spoopy book just to demonstrate how not-superstitious you are!
yeah so this is why fulgrim walks into a creepy temple full of ritual snake orgy and thinks, hmm that snazzy sword the snake guys are obsessively fucking around would make a nice trophy. or why it never occurs to magnus that making deals with the fair folk might be dangerous territory.

The Skaven really epitomize what I love about Warhammer.
They’re funny rat people who speak weird and go nuts for magical green rocks, but they do horrifying shit like eat children, cannabalism, vivisection and there’s so many of them that killing them all is impossible and they could singlehandedly bring about the end times without help if they all worked together, but they’re also funny rat people who smoke magic crackrocks and have chronic backstabbing disorder and they’re petty as fuck and their god looks at all of this and goes “lmao”

This upcoming week's preorders for warhammer are the funniest combination they could think of.
For Kill Team, 40k's small scale game where you play as a single squad of dudes, you have the Chaos Space Marine Night Lords vs Druhkari Mandrakes.
To quickly sum that up, you have a terror troop that makes the "normal" space hell-infused supersoldier barbarians look nice. These are the people that skin their victims, broadcast screams to their friends, and generally are the most edgy of the edgy faction in general. You can see them below with all sorts of skin hanging off them, swords made of bone, and a whole ass banner made of a partial dead supersoldier.
Tumblr media
Opposing them are the shadow demons of the torture elf faction. These are the guys that lurk in the shadows of Edgy Shadow Murder Elf City that scare even the people who live there. They also skin people and wear them as their clothes too. And they wield edgy dark magics that they throw to burn people alive (and possibly their souls as well).
Tumblr media
Then you have the War Cry box, the Age of Sigmar Fantasy skirmish game which has Lumineth vs Nighthaunt.
The Nighthaunt are cursed spirits that the god of the dead personally has constructed ironic punishments for. These ones in particular are eternally burning ghosts that used to be healers, alchemists, and priests who attempted to use sacred fires or potions to burn away death or purify areas of the undead who now spend their afterlives aflame or having to keep the awful flames of Nagash's realm alight upon pain of worse fates.
Tumblr media
So that leaves us with the elves who are the exception right? Well they're nicer than the above, being monk/druid/paladins who are trying to save the realms. However, anyone familiar with Lumineth or with the trope of "too good makes an evil paladin" kind of tropes, you can figure out that they're not always the good guys in the stories. Still they're mostly good, but let's hope they don't run out of villains to fight
Tumblr media
They're also dropping the dark fantasy human hunters alongside the eternally starving ogres who are mutating teeth and tusks out of their body (they previously were for sale together but they're now splitting the box).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So these opposed and themed boxes are dropping soon alongside... gnomes.
Tumblr media
The whiplash between these products feels like being hit with a truck

“Honour is resisting a tyrant when all others suckle and grow fat on the hypocrisy he feeds them. You know nothing of honour." -Angron, Primarch of the World Eaters.
Tumblr media
Very excited for these titles. Also got to see the new World Eaters releases today and had to restrain myself… at least for now. Might pick up Angron tomorrow… having major regret not getting him but it’s not like they’re even officially available and not feeling too hot so probably not even going to paint tonight.
I just really dig me some edgy boys.

WOTN: Sepulturum by Nick Kyme (Black Library)
A Dark and Twisted Tale in Sepulturum Sepulturum is one of the more recent additions to Warhammer Horror, part of the Black Library collection. It’s a chilling tale involving monsters, men, and other elements that make this game and universe so enticing. Morgravia Sanctus has headed to Blackgheist hoping to piece together her missing memories. Ideally, before whoever is hunting her finally…

Okay well if dross is posting their Bad End art then so am I
Lark loves her friends more than life itself. She already has a possessive streak and a crippling fear of abandonment. All it would take is one untimely death and suddenly Tzeentch’s whispers ring loud in her ears. Why wait for the next one to suffer when she could keep them all safe with her, forever?

I recently had the absolute joy to speak with Mike Geary, who voices the Dreg Gunner in Darktide. He does such a good job with this gurgly little bastard that I had to draw something about it, ENJOY
