officially meet tommy kinard, andie's (@lvebug) uncle

Tommy is born on Nov 10, 1980 to two successful parents - his dad is an award-winning chemistry prof at ucla and his mom owns an event planning business that has strong Hollywood ties 

His full name is Thomas Elijah Kinard, but he’s always gone by Tommy.

He has an older sister, Rebecca, who is 11 years older. Despite the age difference, they are very close. 

Tommy is a shy kid, mostly - and it works out. He doesn’t mind being left at home or hanging out in his parent’s offices or backrooms of events so long as he’s got books and comics and tv to keep him entertained. 

The trouble starts when he’s in middle school. He switches from a Jewish day school to a public school, and alongside a growth spurt, he starts to outgrow his shyness. He gets into sports, makes new friends, and it becomes clear that he was an ‘oops’ baby with two parents who prioritize their own careers and miss a lot of his games and extracurriculars.  They already did it once with Rebecca, and beyond keeping up appearances, don’t want to do it again with Tommy. 

Tommy is 15 (1995) when he moves in with Rebecca and her fiance, James.

He’s on the football team, popular both academically and outside of school, but he’s still a shy kid at heart and keeps an eye out for outcasts. 

After his third fight, his parents are done with his antics. No one cares that he was only standing up against a few bullies; he threw the first punches. 

Despite the potential for awkwardness, it’s a relatively smooth transition. He’s happy to spend more time with his sister and bonds with James over cars and football. 

Tommy stops attending synagogue. Rebecca encourages him to go but respects that their parents made it feel like an obligation. He keeps up culturally, though. 

Tommy graduates high school early; he starts college/rotc at 17 (1997) and finishes at 20 (2000).

While Rebecca and James are welcoming, Tommy’s aware he’s holding back their relationship. Plus, between Andie being born in ‘96 and him no longer living with his parents, there’s a fire to get started with his ‘adult’ life. 

His football coach is an army vet and knowing his interest in cars, figures Tommy would make it well as a mechanic or get some advanced training for something more technical. 

Tommy plans on just enlisting, but Rebecca pushes him to consider college. (They were, after all, raised by the same parents who put a heavy emphasis on education.)

He attends ucla and joins the rotc, considering it a compromise. Between the program and his father’s benefits as a professor there, most of his expenses are covered. While his parents don’t love his plan, they support him monetarily, and really, they know his success and future army career reflect well on them. 

Tommy majors in psychology figuring it’ll be easy since he had no real interest in going to college.

This chunk of time is also when Tommy starts noticing his interest in men. There are a few hookups, but it’s explained away with tiny excuses and the idea that he’s young and horny. Although, he is careful to keep it away from his budding army career. 

Beyond that, Tommy thrives in college. He was a popular kid in high school so this is no different. He’s charming and genuinely kind. (And being a guy’s guy, aka into typically masculine things, doesn’t hurt.)

Tommy secures a spot in flight school (20-21) and is an active duty as a helicopter pilot until 2004. 

He might’ve dragged his feet about his college, but he ends up grateful since his status as an officer comes with better pay and a chance to become a pilot. 

Given the timing, Tommy faces a lot of pressure to continue past his initial active duty commitment. While he’s faired better than some in terms of only suffering minor injuries, he didn’t understand the scope of his commitment nor did he imagine being in actual war when he was seventeen. He misses Rebecca and Andie; when the time comes, he decides to serve his remaining time in the reserves. 

Like college and high school, Tommy finds it easy to fit in. If his masculinity was praised in college, it’s tenfold during active duty. Of course, only as long as he plays up the same ignorance where his sexuality is concerned - he doesn’t think DADT personally affects him since he very firmly shuts down any interest in men. (Obviously, with reflection and time, he knows this was just denial and a way to keep himself safe subconsciously.) 

At 25, he is in the reserves, back in LA, and new to the 118. A few months before he finishes his probie year, Rebecca and James are killed in a car accident. In their wills, it’s their final wish that Tommy take in Andie, who is almost eight years old. 

His parents offer some financial support, but not much else. They further withdraw with the death of their daughter; as has been the case for a while, his parents find it easier to love him, and by extension Andie, from a distance. 

Tommy struggles a lot during this time. He’s navigating life post-army, grieving his sister and brother-in-law, and struggling to balance his job with taking care of Andie. Reserve duty also proves challenging since it requires a weekend away every month and two weeks away once a year. 

All this to say, his attitude isn’t the greatest. (It’s part resurgence of the shyness he felt as a kid and part anger at how hard everything’s become, only mildly tempered by someone who finds popularity and fitting in easier now.)

After his sister’s death, Tommy starts attending synagogue again.

While his attendance is spotty, he makes the effort to go because he doesn’t want Andie to go alone or miss out. This time, though, he feels a genuine connection to his faith rather than a familial obligation. 

The support he and Andie receive through their synagogue ultimately helps them adjust to their new life - frozen meals, car pools, babysitting, etc. 

Andie meets Chimney as his probationary year comes to an end (2007). Starting to feel more settled in their life, and having a community to fall back on, Tommy makes more of an effort to be friendlier and welcoming at the firehouse. He starts sharing more about Andie, his sister, and what his life looks like outside of shifts. 

At twenty-eight, Tommy officially retires from the reserves. He starts pursuing his flight instructor certification and becomes a certified instructor by thirty for extra income. 

Also, during this time, Tommy starts casually dating. He feels old, out of practice, and finds it hard to relate to people given he’s raising his niece. 

He dates both men and women at first, and experiments with labels, before realizing he’s gay and always has been. Andie is the first person he tells and he decides against being out at work too. 

In 2017, at 37, Tommy transfers to the lafd air station and decides he’s tired of living his life half in the closest. It’s not what he wants for himself nor the example he wants to set for Andie. He’s been proud of so much in his life (his military career, his piloting, and raising Andie through so much grief and heartache) that there’s no reason he shouldn’t be just as prideful and open with his gayness too.  

So, current season - Tommy is 44.

As we all know, Melody Media announced Hashtag member Liling’s temporary hiatus not too long ago. Last week, Liling was sighted leaving a dorm that was clearly not her own, which deeply upset Codes as they felt that the Idol hadn’t stuck to the usual regulations of a hiatus. Whatever that meant. A few hours after the photo of Liling was posted, the OP also posted a lengthy paragraph explaining who the dorm belonged to and it was none other than Hashtag’s manager, Elias! What a surprise!

Liling being in a relationship with her manager already caused a lot of stir and theories about them were floating around the internet for the next two days with #KEEPELIAWAY trending on twitter. This was mainly because of the age gap between the two, which seemed pretty normal to me, with Liling being born in 2001 and Elias being a ‘96 liner. In response, both Melody Media and Liling confirmed the two were dating and apologized for any inconveniences they might have caused, as well as apologizing for the fact that Liling appeared to not be taking her hiatus as seriously as she should be. As of now, this is all Melody Media have said about the matter.

But the story doesn’t end there. Another anonymous account posted a thread claiming that Elias was actually engaging in sexual relations with one of Melody Media’s Creative Directors whilst Elias and Liling were exclusively dating. Now this, caused even more discourse online and sent Codes into an absolute frenzy. Once fans learned the creative director’s identity (Dawn Wolfe) it was over for everyone. Both Elias’ and Dawn’s social media accounts were leaked to the public within the span of 2 hours. Netizens were absolutely reckless when it came to insulting the pair to the point where Elias begged for forgiveness with a black screen and a few words on his Instagram story.

Some Netizens have chosen to take Liling’s side and defend her against others who claim her visiting her boyfriend under such circumstances was extremely unethical but some have chosen to take Elias’ and Dawn’s side, blaming everything on Liling and supporting them despite their wrongdoings.

No further information has been released about the situation and Melody Media have once again, not released a statement to address these allegations and have decided to stay silent on the matter. Unusually, Liling seems to have taken the same path, choosing to not immediately run to her public Instagram to express her feelings. Elias and Dawn have deactivated all their Social Media accounts.

Joe: Can you tell me a little about yourself, where you were born and raised? Jan: I was born in a little town called Quakertown, Pennsylvania, in Bucks County. It’s about 40 miles north of Philadelphia. I had a wonderful time there growing up, it was a tiny little town and everybody knew everybody. You got to do everything when you were in high school. I was a cheerleader and a drum majorette. I was in drama. I loved growing up there.

Joe: Did you want to become an actress? Jan: Ever since I was in second grade I was Miss Cleanliness, in a way. I got up on that stage and something happened. I saw all those people and it made me want to do something nice. So I did two class plays. I did junior high and senior class plays as the leading lady. I did summer stock when I got out of high school. I did that for quite a while and that was great fun. Joe: So did you go to Hollywood and say “I want to be a star”? Jan: I went to New York first and I got a terrible cold. I had gotten a reference from Samson Raferson, who did a lot of plays. He lived in our area. He sent me to Sherill Crawford doing Brigadoon. So I went there and I could barely talk. You think to yourself once they see you that you would be in Broadway by the weekend. You just think that they are waiting for you. But she said go back home and do summer stock. Do as much as you can of that. It was one of those things that you are so eager and you had no clue as of how to become an actor. So I went back home and then I had a chance to visit some relatives in California. So I never went back to New York. Joe: So what studio did you sign up with? Jan: I did some things with 20th Century, but mostly I did television like ABC, CBS and then Paramount. So I was working all the time. The kids that were under contract with Paramount, they had a class picture taken, and I wasn’t in it because I was the only one working. Will never forget that. How I wish I was in that picture. Joe: You must see a lot of turn over, kids coming and then going home. Jan: Yeah. You know there is a lot of wonderful talent walking the street, and honestly it’s a matter of luck. Plus it helps with who you know. What helped me was I moved in with Amanda Blake from Gun Smoke. We shared an apartment and Ross Hunter had an apartment in the same building. I was working a regular job then. We would walk together in the morning to work. There was an agent that also lived in the building. I was out sunning myself one day and he came over and started talking. He said, “Do you need an agent?” I said yes. That’s how it all started. Quite by accident. Joe: You worked in television? Jan: About 500 episodes. I did so much television. I did so many pilots and series. One of my first series was with McDonald Carrie, who was Doctor Christian. I was a regular on that show. I did two soap operas. Day in Court and Clear Horizons. I did so many Westerns. Every show that was in the fifties and sixties, seventies. At least five hundred television shows.

Joe: Were you an Elvis fan? Jan: No (laughing). Joe: Don’t feel bad, a lot of people have said that to me. Jan: It was so funny because I was sitting with Dan Duriah. I was doing a two hour film. We were sitting on the set. I had the reporter in front of me and it said “ELVIS PRESLEY”. “What kind of a name is that?” He said, “I don’t know.” I said there’s some kid in the south called Elvis Presley. I said he’s never going to make it (laughing). That was the first time that I had ever heard of him. So I didn’t know who he was. I happened to like his voice. I liked his voice but I am not the kind of person who is adoring movie stars. There was maybe one or two that I adored or would like to work with, but I was never like those type of people. But once I met him, I just adored him. Joe: When did you find out that you were going to do an Elvis film? Jan: I was doing a play at Paramount, with Dolores Hart, who is my goddaughter. She is now a nun. Joe: Oh, yes, I know who she is. Jan: She used to be under contract with Hal Wallis. Dolores came up to me after work. She said, “Jan, there is a part in this movie I am going to do with Elvis Presley you would be perfect for. The part would be playing his sister.” I said, “Yeah, right, terrific.” I just let it go at that. But the next thing I know she calls me and says Hal Wallis wants to see you. “I’ve talked to him about you.” So I went up there. He said to me, “I would like you to make a test.” So they gave me the script. When I arrived at the studio, there was four other girls that were testing. I figured I would be the only one. I was in shock, I almost walked out. Peter Baldwin, who was playing the Elvis role, who was a friend of mine, he said, “Stay, stay. These other girls are no way better than you.” I was the last one to be tested. After I just went home and prayed that I would get this role. I got it!

Joe: And this was for...? King Creole! That was Elvis’s favorite movie. Plus it’s the fans favorite movie. It’s also mine. Jan: Yes, it’s mine, too. But I have only seen two movies of his. I only saw them because I was in them. That’s nothing to do with Elvis. It’s just because I was working all the time. I was doing soap operas. Different scripts every day, learning new lines every day. You just don’t have the time to go out and see movies. I had no social life at all. If you do have five minutes on a weekend, you want to sleep.

Joe: Can you tell me how you met Elvis? Jan: When you’re assigned a film role, you have to go to the doctor, because of the insurance company. They have to make sure you don’t have a bad heart, any of that nonsense. They made my appointment for me at the studio, so I was there and I had on a white shirt and these slacks my mother had made for me that were like wine coloured. I went in the office and I was waiting to be called in. In walks Elvis with two of his buddies. I looked at him and he looked at me and we started to laugh. His jacket was the identical material and colour of my slacks. He looked at me and he said, “Honey, I’m either going to have to give you my jacket or you’re going to have to give me your pants” (laughing). That was my first meeting with Elvis. Joe: Goodness. Jan: Girl scout’s honour. Joe: Did you get along with Elvis? Jan: Oh, wonderful. He said if he had a sister, he wished it would be me. We got along so great because we worked alone the two of us the whole first week of the show. I would come to work and I would find on the set a pair of earrings he put there for me that cost about ten cents that he had liberated from the set. I have a marvelous picture where we are waiting to perform and we were just sitting down at the dining room table. I handed him this jewelry and I said I can’t take these from you, Elvis, you know it’s too much. You’re the last of the big spenders. He is there laughing so hard and they snapped this picture of the two of us. It’s a fabulous picture of him. But he would do little things like that. And he would play music on his guitar. He would ask me what I wanted to hear. Elvis loved Danny Boy.

Joe: Did you ever date Elvis? Jan: No, I was married (laughing). Joe: Oh, sorry, I didn’t know that. Jan: No, I was married, honey. But the thing was: Dolores Hart gave me a surprise birthday party. All the kids from Paramount studio were there. It was a big surprise to me. I was there for about ten minutes and in walks Elvis with the boys. He had this huge stuffed tiger under his arm. He knew I loved cats, so he had this stuffed cat and he named it Danny Boy. He gave me this big box. For weeks I had been asking Elvis for pictures that I could give the kids in my neighborhood when they had heard I was doing a picture with him. They all pleaded for photos of him. So I would always ask him for pictures for the kids. “Come on, please, I need pictures.” So he hands me this box and I placed it off to the side. He said, “Oh, no, you need to open that now.” So I opened it and it was a movie camera with a light bar and film. He said, “Now you can take your pictures.” You know if Colonel Parker was there, he would not had allowed that.

Joe: Oh, you’re right. Jan: Dolores said the next day she ran into Elvis and she said, “I was so surprised that you came.” He said I had to come, “She’s my sister. I wouldn’t miss her birthday party” (laughing). I ran into him in the studio. He said to me, “I hear Elvis was at your birthday party.” “Yeah, he was”. He said, “You know he never goes anywhere, people go to him, he never goes to other people’s homes.” Joe: That’s very true. Jan: I said I think we bonded a little bit. Joe: Was Elvis a good actor? Jan: Wonderful! Oh, just marvelous! I will never forget. You know every person that sings is a good actor. Because they have the sense of timing, the sense of rhythm, a sense of what words mean. He was a brilliant actor because he didn’t need any advice. He knew automatically what to do and act, as the show was going on. I kept saying to him, “Oh, Elvis, for God sake, you’re doing such a great job.” So one day we went for lunch. We were sitting there at a table and in walks Marlon Brando. Elvis was sitting with his back towards him. There was a table right behind Elvis that was empty, so Brando saw Elvis as soon as he walked in. So Brando got into the chair right behind Elvis. I said to Elvis, “Marlon Brando is sitting behind you.” Elvis said, “Oh, my God” and his head sunk into his sandwich. I said, “Look, he wants to meet you, I saw him looking at you, just say hi to him.” Well, that’s exactly what happened. He got up and bumped his chair. Marlon stood up and the two of them shook hands. They did a little small talking. Elvis was very cool. Elvis then walked out of the café very cool. But the minute we got outside he leaped up. He couldn’t believe he met Marlon Brando. He was so excited, we just danced all the way back to the studio. Then one day after the show had been released, someone sent me the review of King Creole. The title was “Bourbon Street Brando.” I raced over to Paramount and I grabbed Elvis and I said, “Look at this.” I showed him the “Bourbon Street Brando”, he just couldn’t believe it. I said, “See, I told you, you were going to be great in this!” Joe, Elvis was!

Joe: Now you did another movie with Elvis. Jan: Yes, Paradise Hawaiian Style

Note: In Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966) Jan Shepard played Betty Kohana, wife of Danny Kohana played by actor James Shigeta who's a friend and eventual business partner of Elvis' character Rick Richards.

Joe: Can you tell me about that movie and how you got the part? Jan: I had gone over to Paramount to have lunch with Dolores Hart. She was getting a wardrobe fitting for some picture. I ran into Paul Mason. He said, “Hi”. He asked what was I doing there. He said, “Hey, we need a wife for Jimmie Sakita for a movie Elvis is doing. Would you be interested?” He said, “It’s not a huge part, but it’s a good part.” I said, “Yeah, ok.” He told me to go up and see Hal Wallis. “I will give him a call and tell him you’re coming.” So I went up there. Well, Hal Wallis’s office is full of art. He has originals of Remington’s and Chares Russell, all those wonderful western painters. I walked in and I said, “Oh, my God, you have a Remington!” I knew art because my husband is an artist. Hal Wallis was very impressed, he asked me if I wanted that role? Yeah, fine, that would be wonderful! That’s how I got the part. Joe: Now what did Elvis say when he saw you? Jan: Well, the minute he saw me he asked how was Dolores because now she has been a nun for the past year. And I said she was good, I’ve seen her, I’ve gone there. And Maria Cooper, Gary’s daughter and I were the godmothers for her when she went into the monastery. And I said, “I’ve been there and she’s doing great and she, you know, I said you know if they let me wear eyelash mascara, I’d go in that place and say it’s beautiful. She’s home. This is where she wants to be and he wanted to see if she was okay and how you were doing. You know, and I noticed he was not the Elvis that was the little teddy bear that would run across the stage and pick up and swing you around. He was not that anymore. Joe: He changed? Jan: He was never in his dressing room and you know King Creole. He is always out with a group and having fun and playing the guitar and, you know, just a lot of fun. And he went to his dressing room and it was closed and I noticed he was drinking a lot of water. He had lot of glasses of water and he was drinking. Also, there was an attitude that was so different. He was kind of jaded and at the movies, he and I knew Charlie Afura who did all his choreography. Charlie was showing him something on stage, some dance moves or something, and he was just looking at Charlie, like “Charlie, I’ve done this four or five times already. I know what you want,” because it was the same movie every time. Joe: Right. Jan: He was always doing the same movie and I know he was tired of it.

Joe: When was the last time you saw Elvis? Jan: I saw him in Las Vegas. We went to a Casers Palace and I was so disappointed because he was into the karate stuff and he was turning his back to the audience all the time. And I just wanted to just go up there and spank him, you know. Joe: Yeah. Jan: Because he was just not him. You know. I think that when his mom died, that was just a terrible blow and that if she had lived Elvis would still be alive today. Joe: Yeah. When you were working in the movies, did you have the chance to have one on one conversations? Jan: Oh, yeah, all the time. Especially on the Creole, but not as much on Paradise Hawaiian Style. Yeah, like on the weekend it had rained all weekend and on Monday morning when Elvis came into the makeup room and I said, “Well, what did you do this weekend?” “I was on the phone with my mom all day, I didn’t go anywhere.” He told me one time they were on the road and they stopped at a diner, this was in the fifties. This big guy came over to him and picked him up by his shirt. He said, “I don’t like you”. Elvis said, “What’s wrong?” “My wife carries your picture around in her wallet.” Elvis said, “Hey, sir, I’m sorry, but that has nothing to do with me. I’m sorry, she should do that.” He let Elvis down and they took off. He had so much of that we had to fake people out when Elvis left the studio. We would send out a limo, the fans figured Elvis was in it. But Elvis was getting shoved into a taxi in the back of the studio. Elvis would be laying on the floor. Elvis said, “I know they don’t mean to do it, but sometimes they hurt me. They grab at me, pull my hair”. They have scratched his eye while trying to get some of that beautiful black hair. “I’ve been hurt,” Elvis said. “That’s why I don’t go anywhere.” We had a lot of conversations. One time I said to Elvis, “Why don’t you record Danny Boy?” He loved that song because he would sing it to his mom. Elvis said, “They don’t want that. They won’t let me sing something like that.” It was so funny, one day Pat Boone came walking on the set. Elvis spotted him and he started singing April Love, just the way Pat would sing it. Pat just grinned from ear to ear, Pat then came over and they met. But he never had the chance to become apart of the young Hollywood scene, because he was afraid to go out with the other young people who were at the studio. If he went to go to a movie, he had to rent the whole theatre. You know, Elvis never had a dime on him, he would follow me to the apple machine. I said to him, “You want an apple, right?” “Yes, please” (laughing). He never had any money. Joe: I know that to be true all the way up to the seventies. His men would carry his money and his keys. When did you hear that Elvis had passed? Jan: I was sitting with a friend at her business. The phone rang and they asked if I was there. They asked me if I had the radio on or had been watching television. I said no, why? “Elvis died.” I just couldn’t talk. When I was able to talk, I said I was so angry at him. I was so angry I could not even cry. Because he was doing all the wrong things and he knew he was, damn it! I could see that when I went to see him in Vegas. I said to myself, “That’s not my Elvis.” Joe: But you know the man was the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. Jan: There will never be another like him. In the Creole days he was just a big teddy bear. I asked him one time, “Ok, Elvis, when did all this swinging your hips start? Why do you do that?” “I do it for fun, I know just when to break it off.” I used to watch the little negro boys in his town, how they would sit on the curbs and sing. And they would stand up and dance. He said that’s where he got that from. They would sing and move their hips.

Just gonna vent a bit

This past week has been extremely stressful and I’m just done.

I’m a theatre kid - I love performing - and we have a show coming up this week and preparing for that is just so draining because apparently since I’m a cat and the costume they gave me has a masquerade style cat mask with ears, I’m not allowed to wear my freaking glasses and no one realizes that I have really bad eyesight - not so bad that I can’t walk or function completely - but if you were me - you’d realize how fucking terrifying it is when the world around you is blurry and you feel like you’re going dizzy except you’re not because this is just the damn body you’re born in.

To add on to all the stress, I have to maintain my grades and it’s just so exhausting because it’s like “test!” “test!” “review!” “review!” “oh you got a 96%?” “do better! you can’t keep distracting yourself with all this spending time with friends”

Mixed with “you never leave the house - why don’t you go out with friends?” Maybe it’s because YOU DONT LET ME.

And to top it all off, my dad is leaving for India tomorrow- and he just got back from another business trip within but still far in the country.

Tomorrow is also my brother’s birthday - my dad was supposed to leave yesterday, but he changed it so he could be here for my brother’s birthday.

How sweet and caring and thoughtful of him right?

And yes, I get that my dad is a very hardworking man and I’m very proud of him and his accomplishments but he never cares. It’s always about my perfect little brother who is far from perfect if you ask me. No matter what I do it’s always “be better!” “do better!” “you’ve been given a privilege and you’re putting it to waste!” With him, it’s always “we believe in you!” “we’ll help you through this!!” “no matter what, we’ll always love you.”

His punishments for doing literally terrible things are so small, yet when my parents find out I’m not straight, they give me emotional trauma for months. The little fucker literally trashed the neighbor’s front yard with a friend on purpose and then when confronted about it, lies straight through his teeth.

But here’s the real topping to the cake - yes I do love my parents, no matter how many times we may disagree on things, they are my rock and I wouldn’t be where I am without them. But this one small thing they couldn’t do for me. My dad goes out of his way to make sure he is there for my brother’s birthday but he isn’t there for mine last year. Last year when he left for a trip, he missed my musical’s show nights - had to watch it on a stupid hard drive - and when he did, he never said a goddamn thing. No “good job, your singing and acting was great!” or “I wish I could’ve been there in person!”

And even now, he’s still doing the same goddamn thing - he’s missing the show I’m doing and doesn’t feel a single ounce of remorse. All my fucking hard work for nothing.

It just fucking sucks when others seems to get what you want, what you need so easily, when you’ve worked your entire life to experience barely a ghost of what could’ve been.

And finally today, my brother is lying on the floor of my room, refusing to leave me the fuck alone even though I’ve been annoyed all day from walking around shopping for shit and sitting through church and trying to keep a clear head even though I just really want to go home and take a long nap but I can’t because the little fucker and trashing the room I spent all week trying to keep clean and my mom won’t do a goddamn thing because “it’s your brother and he’s just playing with you.”

And at this point- I’m just done. Because no one gets it. No one ever does.

And so I say something along the lines of “You’re turning — tomorrow. When I was your age, I was working hard, and auditioning and competing and you’re here lying on the floor of your older sister’s bedroom completely useless.”

And yes I admit that was a little harsh - he started crying - but my mom’s response was what got me.

She said “never call you brother useless again. Keep your achievements to yourself, you hear me?! I have never heard you this mean to anyone before.”

But she doesn’t know. She doesn’t know what I go through every day m, trying to keep my head high and my eyes looking forward even though I can’t see anything.

She doesn’t know, my dad doesn’t know, my brother doesn’t know, heck, most of my friends don’t even know. They all just think I’m a smart girl who’s never had a problem with her position, getting to where she is in life.

They don’t know how hard I work, how hard I worked, to keep my shaky feet on the ground, to keep myself standing tall when there’s nothing to keep me up.

For those who surely don’t need to know, I’ve been crying while typing all of this, and I’m exhausted so I’m ending this here.

Sorry for unexpectedly trauma dumping - I just needed shit off of my chest.

sypnosis: When Steve told you he wanted six kids, you thought he was joking. Spoiler! he wasn't.

Dad Steve Harrington.

"Steve do you really want six kids?" You ask, a little worried considering you're 9 months pregnant and about to pop and he's already talking about your second.

"Oh yeah. All girls too. Though a mini Steve doesn't sound too bad." He says, flicking through a magazine with his hand on your thighs that are draped over his lap.

"I'm not promising you six kids. If this one's gives us hell you best believe you're getting the snip." You say pointing at his croch and he winces when he thinks of it.

"I'd obviously never force you but doesn't a van full of kids sound fun? Never a dull moment in the Harrington house." He adds with a happy look on his face.

Little did you know your first daughter was hours away from being born.

21/11/87, The first Harrington daughter, Sylvie Harper Harrington, was born.

"She's so cute." You say, your eyes welling up with tears from holding your daughter for the first time.

"She won't stay this small forever." Steve complains, a sob leaving his mouth and you hear Robin's cackle from the side of the room.

"I'm not saying now but when she starts walking maybe we could have another one?" You cave and Steve looks up smiling.

"Really?" His eyes have such excitement and love filling them, how could you ever say no to him?

Steve was whipped. He knew he loved you but seeing you give birth to his child and raise her had him obsessed with you.

So it wasn't much of a suprise that 6 months after Sylvie's birth you were staring at positive pregnancy test.

16/2/89, the second Harrington girl was born. Her name being Juno Faye Harrington.

Both the Harrington girls gave their parents hell. You and Steve thought you were done with kids.

Steve was upset but he knew he would always love his girls but he never felt like their family was complete.

You weren't trying. But 4 years after Juno was born you were sat in a random diner, on the way to Iowa to visit your parents, which already had you nervous since they hadn't met Juno yet, the two lines on the pregnancy test didn't help to calm your nerves either.

4/11/93, the third Harrington was born. You and Steve hadn't thought of names after your other two girls made you not want more kids so after a very stressful pregnancy and a few days of thinking after she was born, Aven Samantha Harrington was finally named.

Juno and Sylvie were obsessed with their little sister. So was Steve. He missed the getting up at night and seeing you feed his daughters.

He missed seeing you getting excited over the tiny milestones.

It was you who brought up the idea of a 4th child.

Aven was one and a half when you started trying, you knew Steve was fertile but 9 months after you were heavily pregnant and trying to figure out a name.

"Why didn't we just find our the gender?" You ask with a huff, throwing the baby book down on the floor, but quietly not wanting to wake your daughters.

"We both know it's a girl. I'm incapable of having boys, not that I mind. I love my girls." He looks over to you and you have a look on your face.

"Livia! If it's a girl can we pleaseeee call her Livia?" You beg. Even going as far as to clasp your hands together.

"Junie said we have to name him Wells." You smile, not hating the name at all.

"Hi Livia or Wells." Steve leans down and kissed your stomach.

4 days later, 22/1/96 Livia Rose Harrington was welcomed to the world.

Now with 4 kids life was more hectic then ever. Sylvie was 8 and wasn't happy sharing a room with Juno anymore. So they were house hunting.

What didn't help was Aven kept pointing at your stomach saying babies were in there.

"Aven, if mommy's pregnant why isn't she big?" You asked your sweet daughter with a sigh, trying to get her to go to sleep.

"Because the boys are only little mommy." She says, pushing her face into your chest while you sigh

That night, 6 months after the birth of Livia, you were sat on the toilet with a positive test in your hand. Just like you were 7 years ago with Juno.

On the 28th of May, 1997, you gave birth to twin boys. You also got your tubes tied that day.

Your boys, Lux Becker and Wells Elliot Harrington were born.

You and Steve agreed no more kids at the appointment when you found out it was twins.

Steve got his van full of kids and you got to feel like your family was complete.

Growing up in the house, there was never a quiet moment. Whether it was Sylvie kicking her younger siblings out of her room and then playing Metallica as loudly as she could (Eddie always gave her Cds)

Or Juno crying about how she can't figure out what to draw next and needs to call her uncle Dustin right at that very moment, didn't matter if it was 2am.

Or even Aven running after Steve with her makeup begging to make him pretty or asking if her she could go to a makeup store.

And Livia, their quietest child would have her nose in a book while her younger brothers ran around throwing baseballs at their dad who always had a smile on his face.

When Sylvie came and told you both that she was expecting at 18, just as you were 18 years ago. Steve broke out in tears.

Excited to be there for a whole new newborn stage and to be a grandpa.

Robin never let him live it down.

"Dude you're a whole grandpa at 37!" She teased and Steve's eyes welled up with tears again.

"My baby is so grown up." He sobbed and you rolled your eyes, moving yourself in front of him.

"Honey, you really have to stop crying when anyone brings it up. You cried in Cosco yesterday." He shoves his head into your shoulder, his body shaking as he cries.

"Mommy! My water broke!" You hear Sylvie say and Steve stands up so fast you stagger back slightly.

Sylvie waddles downstairs with her hospital bag in hand.

"Steve start timing her contractions. Sylvie come sit down we won't be going anywhere until your daddy calms down." You sit your daughter down and rub her back, letting her squeeze your hand through her contractions.

You look up at Robin and she's already nodding, knowing you're asking her to watch the other 5.

"Steve. Honey, snap out of it. Go start the car please."

"I'm gonna be a grandpa!"

okay I just have one confuse brain moment on your donna timeline. Saying she CAN'T have been born before x (was it 1997?) because of the gravestone?

Why not? am I missing something? I know the stone was Claudia's, I just don't see why that's the cutoff for Donna. Please explain to my poor hurting post-finals brain lol

Oh, Donna could well have been born before 1996. She just can’t have joined Miranda’s family (read: been experimented on and declared a success) before that year.

I talked about it all a lot more in my post about Donna's history, but in brief: Claudia’s gravestone is our big clue here, because we know it already existed when Donna was adopted by Miranda (the gardener's diary mentions Donna asking him to plant flowers on Claudia’s grave just a few days after her adoption was made official). And the gravestone gives Claudia’s year-of-death as 1996, so Donna’s adoption couldn’t have been before that year.

(I do think it’s possible the writers may have meant for Donna to have been part of Miranda’s family for much longer than that, only for some wires to get crossed somewhere between them and whoever made the asset for the gravestone - those kinds of minor mistakes happen in game development all the time. But for now, that gravestone is as canon as anything else we know about her.)

You can actually make a pretty good case that Donna might not have joined Miranda's family until as recently as 2017, depending what assumptions you make about the lifespan of her gardener(s) (more on that in the post linked above, if you're curious). And given she doesn't look much more than 20, it's entirely possible Donna wasn't born before 1996 - but that's a lot less clear-cut than whether she'd been adopted by Miranda back in '96, and really up to your own interpretation.

But now you've gone and got me thinking again... (always dangerous!)

So, suppose Donna wasn't born until after 9-year-old Claudia's death (since her gravestone also gives us her age). I raised a couple of possible theories about Donna and Claudia as sisters in my other post, and that's certainly still possible here. But a 9+ year gap and a tragic death between daughters could suggest Donna was pretty deliberately conceived as a replacement for dear-departed-Claudia (something like this actually happened in my family a couple of generations ago - I owe my grandmother's existence to the death of a sister she never even knew). And given all Donna's other anxieties, being raised in the shadow of a much-loved-and-missed ghost-sister could only make things that much worse for her - and it does have a certain thematic resonance with what Donna would become...

But that's Donna in a nutshell, isn't it? No answers, but so many tantalising possibilities!

Pullin’a bit of a fast one, but I was quite curious. 👀

For the character questions; Mist/no.96? 🩵

Oooooo The Fun Astral, now this is a spicy character we're talking about in zexal, and I have some thoughts on him. Although I have to admit I didn't pay enough attention to him in the past rewatches, so my memories may be a bit fuzzy about him, but I always found him to be an intriguing villain in Zexal, so here lays my truest thoughts on Dark Mist, aka Mr. No.96

•How do you feel about this character

I really liked Dark Mist as a character, he's just a living and breathing slimy liquorice who likes to wrap tentacles around Astral and is so horny for hi- I mean posses him and dreams about making out wit- I meant become independent and powerful of course (we've all been there...) BUT SERIOUSLY THOUGH THIS MAN IS SO DOWN BAD FOR ASTRAL HE KEEPS MOANING HIS NAME EVERYTIME HE'S FRUITY ASF─

There is also a part of me that feels like he didn't appear often enough or there were missed opportunities to kind of hit the mark in terms of writing, but this is Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal we are talking about I didn't expect anything less about a show who keeps shoehorning protagonists and put unnecessary filler over actually interesting side characters (this is my and my opinion alone and I will stand by it).

Ideally what Dark Mist represents is an interesting concept, if Astral is the light then he's the darkness. "Where there is light, there is darkness" Dark Mist said in one episode, implying Astral needs to use the "Power of evil" aka No. 96, when necessary, or a part of Dark Mist will always be within Astral, but they don't use this concept beyond one episode, it's just cheap writing making him to appear once in a blue moon throughout the show and dip just like that.

Later we discover that he is born from a fragment of Don 1000 trapped in Astral and took the identity of a Number card, as Astral likes to randomly split into cards because Yu-Gi-Oh - but what I found very interesting is he's not either on Astral world's side, nor the Barian world, even though he was born from a fragment of the Barian God himself. He's just a free spirit who does everything for his own benefit, but in doing so he keeps getting sent to horny jail- I meant get sealed by Astral.

He is cunning enough to let himself be absorbed by Astral just so he can play him inside the Emperor's Key, which is very smart of him, but then he is trapped in a cycle of...

I feel like the writers just didn't know what to do with him at this point, he's as threatening as the Trix in Winx club (like- I can even draw parallels and similarities) and Astral keeps winning against him again and again cause 'Good triumph over evil yay', seriously I feel like he's a missed potential. Also can we talk about how many times he broke free? Like Astral, what lock are you using to seal him lmao?? (The writers doesn't even explain this btw)

Later on, No.96 just decided to trick Astral into releasing him and then for some reason decided to possess Donald Trump but good for him I guess.

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE PURPLE LIPSTICK

LIKE OMG, I KNOW HE WAS A FRUIT BEFORE, BUT THEY TOOK IT TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL

He really put some lipstick and said "I'm a god now", can't blame him (Also I have to be honest about his God complex era, HE WAS SO ANNOYING, HE PROBABLY SAID "KAMI" MORE THAN KOTORI CALLING YUMA'S NAME)

Also him treating Vector as a pet while being used and Vector just seething inside was so funny to see, it's like a complete opposite end pair compared to Yuma and Astral.

Overall he's pretty solid, I just wish the writers treated him better and made him a more complex villain (like this guy wasn't in anyone's side they could have done so much more than "he bombs all three worlds cause he can now" like c'monnn they made him flat and one dimensional in the end compared to how he used to be???).

So happy that we just hit 100 sessions in my wizard’s campaign!

While it’s not the longest campaign I’m in (that goes to a campaign I’m in from 2019 that’s still going), it’s the most sessions of any campaign I’ve been in, and it’s been such a great game so far. Playing Yolov is so fun and this homebrewed world is incredible. Incredibly lucky to have such a great GM and group of players!

Astvanor Campaign Summary

The adventure began with a diary.

Everyone born on Astvanor knows of the Spring War, an old war between Astvanorians and primordial entities called the Sunken Ones. The Sunken Ones’ eventual defeat came at a high cost in the final battle when Alaeymena Thayerblossom, a young cleric of Relatya, witnessed her lover, a paladin of Tsaliora recorded only by the moniker, Ansrivarr, fall in battle.

The twin goddesses who protected the world imbued her with too much divine power as she called on them in her grief. It caused a magical backlash unlike any other, devastating the entire battlefield. This brought about many changes to the world: the withdrawal of the twin goddesses from the world, the creation of a new pantheon with Aleymena as the goddess of Spring, and the holy enshrinement of Springrest where her body fell.

Thousands of years later, archeologists in Striog discovered a diary that mentioned a relic from the Spring War. They believed the clerics who had the journal originally were from a temple just east of the Springrest and lived there during the Spring War.

Someone was needed to journey to that abandoned temple of Relatya, which might have more information on this relic, known only as the Sword. Should the relic fall into the wrong hands, it could be very dangerous.

Session 96

In which the party befriends a crew of child thieves, encounters a very strange artificer, Yolov's mentor continues to be kidnapped to the Shadowefell, and Yolov's birthday starts off less than stellar.

Session 97

In which Hava learns more about her missing sister, the party gets into an unexpected fight with a wizard, and Yolov takes 51 lightning damage and continues to have a terrible birthday.

Session 98

In which the party unburies a body, learns more about their enemy who has Yolov's mentor, and Yolov's no good, very bad birthday concludes.

Session 99

In which Yolov's favorite necromancer comes to the city, Yolov reads a book walking up a mountain, and the party's rest gets interrupted by some very unsettling wolves.

And now, Session 100, in which the party does their best to outrun the wolves and ends up unexpectedly meeting Hava’s sister’s smuggler girlfriend inside the mountain.

Session 100: 1/13 (Days 18 and 19 of Veksdan) 

As the party climbs the icy, cold, dark path that is still well-carved by use, they can hear the howling sounds of wolves in the distance. On the left they can see the rough, rocky sheer drop of the mountains. It’s not a spacious path and there’s no way to dart into the woods, which is too thickly clustered to travel easily. 

There are a few places along the path above them that are less jagged and difficult, but they’re still a ways from reaching them. Hava can see in the distance that there is a point where rubble blocks the path. 

There are howls and returning howls behind them. 

They race up the slick stairs as the snow clings to their skin and their hair. Hava makes it up the next few steps without effort and then turns as nearly everyone else slides down the slick steps, Yolov’s feet going out from under him. He lands painfully on one knee. 

The party keeps running, Yolov limping a little and Galowen dragging him along. 

They reach the rock slide, which was likely caused by Iceclaw’s attack on Radiscune. People have been climbing and clambering over it, with pieces of wood that has been positioned in a way to try and maneuver carts over. Yolov Misty Steps to the top of the rubble to avoid having to climb it, as Hava flies on a wave of twilight magic. 

Galowen grabs Az and hauls him up over the rubble as Diana leaps gracefully upon the stones. They can hear the wolves growing a little distant behind them, still present but apparently stymied a little. 

The cliff face rises to meet them, narrowing the path. The second of the switchbacks is coming up. There are thick, overhanging trees where the party can take the pathway to the switchback or take a narrow path up the cliffside and through the trees going back east to shave off a couple minutes of running. 

Galowen and Yolov both cast Misty Step up the cliff as Hava flies, while Az Dimension Doors Diana as far up the mountain as possible. Galowen, Hava, and Yolov continue to run up the mountain after them. 

Az and Diana look over their shoulders to see that there are roots twisting across the path the rest of the party is traveling up. Az and Diana spy another smaller path that leads into a wooded area as the rest of the party catches up, Yolov exhausted and gasping for breath. 

They hastily examine the two paths, Diana knowing the one leads to the third switchback before the dwarven roads entrance, while the second wasn’t one Collie knew about, either used by smugglers or hunters. 

Galowen realizes that there’s a chance there is a sanctuary on the second path that hunters use. Az remembers being taken along on a hunt with his father, who disliked them but attended them for political reasons, and crying when the hunters killed a deer before they went to a hunting lodge. They take that path. 

Galowen and Diana bound easily down the path, Diana swinging through the trees to avoid the tangled roots. Hava races through as well, half-held by the shadows. Az manages to follow, stumbling a little as he gets smacked in the face with a branch. Yolov trips and falls and scrambles gracelessly up the path, feeling the exhaustion and ache in his bones as Diana helps him up and onward. 

Everyone can see, ribboning through the darkness, a small but frigid creek twenty feet wide that intersects the path. Together, Galowen casts Plant Growth and grows some extremely thick vines, winding and braiding  them together as Yolov uses Telekinesis to direct them towards the creek to create a temporary bridge.  

The bridge unravels behind them as they all continue to run, their knees beginning to ache. In the distance, the mountain rises to meet them. For a split second it looks like they have backed themselves into the cliffside with only the forest all around them. 

Az and Yolov are both panting with exertion when Hava spies a small, well-hidden entrance to a cave, a thin crack of light revealing its presence. She points it out and immediately begins to run towards it. There is a small canopy of leaves that has been woven to look natural but, pulled aside, reveals a door. 

Hava pushes inside, with everyone following. It’s an empty, circular room with two lamps lighting the space. They all crowd inside, closing and locking the door behind them. 

There are two bedrolls laid out in the corner. There is a table, with what looks to be an interrupted card game on it, and crossbows set aside by the bedrolls and some boxes in the corner. There are some dirty boots, which are wet, having been here long enough for snow to melt. There are no embers in the fireplace. There are runes inside the lamps, ones that career hunters would know for perpetual flame. The bedrolls are cold but not dusty. The trail mix from the table isn’t stale. 

Yolov realizes that the people must have left about six hours ago. 

The place is a circle. There’s no obvious exit into a deeper cave system. They investigate the boxes, finding a communal supply of medicine supplies, alcohol, and hunting supplies. 

Then Yolov reaches into one and his hand hits the bottom sooner than it should. He remembers this experience from Kiva’s ship and looks to find the crate’s label marked as Dawnscale Trading Company. 

They quickly realize all of the supply boxes are labeled with Kiva’s company, and three have false bottoms. The first is empty, the second has fine silks and exquisite jewelry that Az takes a moment to admire, and the third has steps in the false bottom leading downwards into darkness. 

Hava uses her prayer breads to cast Greater Restoration on Yolov. The party decides to stay here for the night. Worried that the wolves might break down the door, they head down the steps to investigate if there’s a safer place for Hava to cast Tiny Hut. 

They reach a small, underground platform. There is a ladder to descend further, and they climb down it, reaching an empty, cold dark cave with a single doorway leading out. 

Yolov can see footprints of people who have been here relatively recently. There is one set of bare footprints. The party debates what could have caused the smugglers or hunters to flee without their belongings and whether they should try to find them. 

Az sends Medrash through the doorway. The pseudodragon spies empty crates, some with the false bottoms removed, but doesn’t spy anyone as the path angles slightly downward. Az calls Medrash back. 

He tells the group what Medrash saw and suggests that they still keep watch within Hava’s Tiny Hut. After she casts it, Az makes out the distant sound of the wolves attacking the door before they grow bored and leave. 

Hava and Yolov resume their watch. She listens and there is silence as well. Before they end their watch and wake Diana and Audacity, Yolov awkwardly squeezes Hava’s hand and says that while he’s been a little distracted, they are going to find Maeve and rescue Professor Dailiir. Hava just needs to let him know what she needs from him and he’ll do it. 

Hava tells him that she’s okay and that she just needs him to keep being him. Then she rubs his bald head and heads to bed as Yolov wakes Diana for the final watch. 

Diana sits watch, listening to the quiet trickling of water nearby and occasional quiet shift of stone. Nothing else happens, but when another rock falls near the exit of the cave, Diana leaves the Tiny Hunt to investigate it. 

Behind her as she leaves, she can see the Tiny Hut begin to fade as the spell hits its final moments. It’s quiet and dark, and she moves to the mouth of the exit where a tiny rock had fallen. When she leans down, it doesn’t look quite right. She can’t tell where it fell from, since there’s only smooth stone above her. 

She leans in to get a closer look just as a wire trap tries to snap around her ankle. She just barely dodges out of the way. Nearby, she can hear the disappointed click of teeth and someone saying, “Damn, almost got one,” and another voice hushing them. 

Diana goes invisible, earning a startled curse and the sound of moving footsteps further into the corridor. She bolts back to the Tiny Hut as it disappears and tells them about the people. Hava scolds her for leaving the Tiny Hut and Az tells her she should’ve taken someone along. Diana argues that Audacity was meditating, the others were sleepy, and Adrin isn’t stealthy. 

They debate leaving out the cave entrance or continuing down the corridor in hopes that it’s a shortcut to the dwarven roads. There are the emptied crates Medrash saw, but as Az and Hava study them, they both notice the residue in the cracks of the wood and realize that it didn’t carry drake-stone but gemstones. 

Az knows that one party that would be very interested in gemstones, it’s probably going to be dwarves. 

Hava had talked with Kiva during the trip on the Morning Flight, and she remembers a moment leaning on the edge of the ship, wind in her hair as Kiva chatted about the different places he’s been. The only capital he’s never personally been to is the dwarven capital. He’s been trying to establish a trade route there but hasn’t managed it yet. 

When she mentions this to the party, Az laughs at the idea of Kiva calling it a trade route, though Galowen points out smuggling does involve a trade of sorts. 

Yolov says it seems strange to him that Kiva’s people would empty out the boxes here rather than deliver them to the dwarven roads. They’re debating if the people upstairs were Kiva’s people and chased by thieves. 

Yolov sees a flicker of movement at his shadowed feet and a flitting movement as someone uses the shadows to land at Hava’s side. It’s a tiny goblin woman who says she didn’t steal anything. Hava explains that they were just looking at the boxes because they know Kiva. 

The goblin stares at her and asks if she really knows Kiva. Hava says she does, and the goblin crosses her arms and squints with all the effort she can muster in her three-foot frame. Then she introduces herself as Captain Kasuno. 

Hava introduces them as Donnie and the Hooligans and explains that Kiva wasn’t expecting them. Yolov explains about the wolves, and Kasuno tells them that she and her crew have been here for a week. They were in the middle of moving the items a few days ago when there was a cave in and their passageway to the roads was blocked off.

There are shadow monsters within the smugglers’ tunnel as well, though Cassone’s crewmate Sola is currently warding them off. The party realizes this is the fastest way to get to the dwarven roads and Cassone offers to let them use the passage if they help the group deal with the shadow monsters. 

Hava says they’d be happy too, any friend of Kiva’s is a friend of hers. Cassone eyes her and asks if he fucked her real good, making Yolov turn purple and Galowen grin and high five her as Hava grins and agrees he did. 

Cassone says she’s known Kiva for years. She explains that under him she has had gainful employment. She didn’t even have to rent her ship, The Lost Mistake, which is in the Sisters’ Reach Port at the moment. Az recognizes the name, which is on a list of ships that Captain-Admiral Zorax of the Striogian navy has made of people he suspects are smugglers. He also remembers that there is a rumor of Cassone being presumed dead, which many don’t believe, though the Lost Mistake crew will insist to people she is. 

This list that Zorax has doesn’t have Kiva’s ship or Maeve’s ship on it. Zorax does believe that at one point the Lost Mistake supplied information, people, or resources, or harbored the Stormriders. He knows there is a debt owed somewhere. 

Hava asks Cassone if she’s familiar with a group of mercenaries called the Stormriders. 

Cassone says she thought she looked familiar, but she didn’t seem to have the same salt. While the party takes it for an insult, Hava waves it aside and agrees. She mostly grew up sheltered and with her family before she left home. 

Cassone eyes them and asks what they want with Maeve, since she owes her a debt. Hava pointedly says that she’s her sister. Cassone says yes, she realized that, but still looks unconvinced that Hava is here to help Maeve. 

Yolov explains that they’re searching for the Stormriders because they’re concerned something has happened to them. They were due back in Radiscune a week ago to collect their earnings. Cassone is concerned by that, because it doesn’t seem like Maeve to fail to collect her money. 

She presses them on if they’re certain Maeve didn’t return to Radiscune and Az says that Mother told them, which makes Cassone curse.

Hava notices the tattoo of a two-headed fish on her arm as she gestures. She silently pieces together that for all the talk of debt and friendship, Cassone and Maeve are more than friends. This is Maeve’s girlfriend. 

Cassone leads them down to a spot in the hall where they can hear a ruckus and a weird howling hissing sound. They smell a wave of a sickly sweet rotting scent, familiar and disgusting. 

Above the howling and hissing and growling, the party hears an increasingly loud and obnoxious argument happening between two people. There’s a voice that is distinctly not local and haughty complaining that he’s been giving his absolute best holding the wall for 12 hours. Another voice, rougher, says that just because he’s got more magic doesn’t mean he has to let Sola be a dick all night. 

The party rounds the corner and sees a red-haired, elaborately clothed and bejeweled pirate holding an abjuration ward to keep the shadows at bay. It’s clearly the Sola Cassone mentioned earlier. Next to him, arms crossed, is a half-orc gentleman called Jeremy. 

There are two more individuals. One is a woman called Kyla who looks dwarvish and another is a halfling called Jackie. 

Sola holds his arms out at an awkward ankle and turns to study the party. He sighs at more newcomers. 

Az introduces them as Donnie and the Hooligans, which surprises Diana since she didn’t realize he was their leader. Galowen explains that he’s not, they just named the group that to keep Az humble.  

Jeremy extends his arm, which is missing a pinky, and shakes Az’s hand. 

Yolov looks at the arcane shield, impressed at Sola’s control and power. However, he realizes that Sola is over-exerting himself and looks close to collapse from straining his magic. He likely already has collapsed earlier from what Cassone said, leading the shadows to gain a foothold past the blocked tunnel.  

Az spies at least four, maybe five shadows that are moving in front of the shield. They fuse together and split apart. At one point three of them combine into something almost as big as the corridor itself and throw themselves at the shield, making Sola wince and the walls shake. 

Yolov says that they should deal with the shadows as quickly as possible before Sola strains himself any further. Sola protests that he is fine, but Jeremy says that he’ll grab him if he collapses. Galowen offers Glyn, which makes Sola protest over spoiling his nice clothes before the party explains Glyn is a summoned steed. He sniffs and tells them that they should have said that at once. 

Az assures him that his clothes will be fine, and offers him a helpful hand up onto Glyn with a lingering touch, earning a slow once over from Sola as Sola settles himself onto Glyn. Sola holds his concentration on the shield despite being obviously distracted by Az. 

Galowen pats Yolov on the shoulder and tells him he doesn’t have to look at the flirting, giving him Bardic Inspiration while Yolov flushes and casts Mage Armor on himself and prepares to cast Mirror Image on himself the second before the arcane ward drops. 

Galowen casts Bless on a few people as Cassone orders her group away from the ward, warning the party that she’ll kill them if they get Sola or anyone on her crew killed. 

Then Sola drops the ward.

Immediately the five shadows rush forward at the party.

Headcanon that childhood friends Billy and Argyle exchanged friendship necklaces.

Billy never takes his medallion off and Argyle rarely forgets to pull his owl pendant on every morning.

And when they see each other again, for the first time after Billy moving away, they both are still wearing them as they hug with tears in their eyes outside Max's hospital room.

Because Argyle has been mourning his best friend for eight months and Billy's been trapped in hell and believing he'd ever see another soul again.

Only it turns out Billy wasn't dead, not completely, and he wasn't in hell, just some hellscape dimension called the Upside Down. And when he heard the sound of heavy metal like a siren's call, he ventured out of his barricaded basement in Loch Nora and found some idiots trying to save the world without the proper equipment like his homemade flamethrower.

Their first words to each other after their long tight embrace are:

"Righteous beard and flowing hair my dude. You're like, pulling a white Jesus, with the whole resurrection and saving everyone."

"It's ten in the morning, you should not be this high without supervision."

Argyle grins and hugs Billy again, so tight the blond tries not to flinch from is ever aching and still recovering body.

"I missed you so much, Billiam."

Billy huffs and hugs back, eyes welling up again.

"Missed you too, Argie."

Want to know what really grosses me out in general and also about Stranger Things because I was born and raised in Indiana?

The age of consent is 16.

Yes you read that correctly.

Thats why in season one it 'wasn't made a big deal' that Jonathan took pictures of Nancy and Steve having sex.

And in season two it 'wasn't made a big deal' for Karen, a grown ass married woman, to flirt back with Billy, a kid thats the same age as her eldest child.

And in season three it 'wasn't made a big deal' when the Karen and Billy shit happened again no matter if he was freshly 18 or not, it still would have been legal as long as he was 16 or older. And I'm so glad they didn't put that shit on screen. Hate that Billy got flayed, hate that so much you have no idea. But I would have hated it even more if things had gone as they'd planned and Karen really did show up to have sex with a kid her daughter's age.

What I'm saying is, it was cool that a nostalgic show took place in my home state not too unlike a town I grew up in. But with choices the duffers made over the seasons, also including the subtle not so subtle implied rasicm and obvious homophobia and ignorant satanic paranoia and blatant child abuse (that all very much still happens today), it makes me think that the only reason they chose a conservative Midwestern state was so they could get away with writing all that bullshit.

And if it wasn't for some of the actors pushing for better dialog and situations and basically twisting their arms for different scenes and refusing to do others, this show wouldn't have lasted this long. Because we'd have been watching the same overused and small-minded stereotypes and tropes from decades ago and have stopped watching.

So, does learning the age of consent in Indiana make you even more aware of how many scenes in Stranger Things gives me the heebie jeebies?

Thought so.

Inspired by my other Dad Murray post... This is what I got so far. But I’m sure some of y’all can do better... and I take forever to write shit anyway so here is a taste...

What if... Post S3 Fix-It wherein Billy survived and everyone visits him in the hospital a lot and it is a lot. A few because they want to, some of them out of guilt or obligation at first but then they look forward to it. And while others go because they wish they could have helped Billy more while he was flayed, some not having known he was even possessed and others told about it too late.

Anyway, Murray is a common visitor, mostly crossing paths with Steve and Max and Robin, and that pot dealer and cheerleader that are Billy's friends but not 'in the know'. Billy has no fucking idea who he is at first until Murray starts talking and then never stops, his first words are:

"Hey kid, I'm Murray Bauman, investigative journalist and in the know about this whole shitshow. Really admire how you fought that gross as shit monster with your bare fucking hands. Anyway, I hear you have the highest GPA in Hawkins High history, tell me what you think about Ronald Reagan."

Billy blinks and then his face purses meanly, "Wish that fucker had aimed higher and got him in the face in '81. But then the bitch would have been revered a martyr and the fucking Republicans would be even worse. And since I survived, I still got a chance to piss on his grave one day."

Murray beams at him and pulls out contraband chocolate bars from his coat.

"Kid, you and I are gonna get along just fine." He breaks the Hershey bar into pieces and sits close so he can pop one in Billy's mouth after he nods. "Just let these melt, gotta get that hospital mush taste out of your mouth. Now, you wanna hear about what stupid shit Reagan has said recently? Or do you like crosswords?"

Billy sucks on the chocolate, the taste a marvelous change from everything previously. "I'm a sudoku guy, but I make crosswords my bitch."

"Excellent."

*Murray finds out about the abuse, beats the shit out of Neil and 'runs him out of town'. Then he takes all of Billy's stuff to his new place that is closer to Hawkins and tells Billy he's his kid now, so sign this and he'll take over Billy's insurance and help him with his school work until he can get back to classes. Billy cries and Murray hugs him and Billy cries some more.

My #1 post of 2022

I've seen a lot of fics fixing Billy's home life and I've loved them all... Susan bettering herself and Neil getting arrested, Joyce taking Billy in as one of her own and being the mama bear he has always needed, Hopper adopting another child of abuse and protecting them both so fiercely that they help him grow from his own trauma too, I've even read rarer fics where Mrs Henderson or the Harringtons take him under their wing and help him be independent.

But where are the fics with Murray, crazy eccentric incredible karate fighting Murray, seeing the aftermath of this young boy fighting a monster with his bare fucking hands and surviving only to despair about the thought of finally being able to leave the hospital and go home? Where are the fics with Neil getting his ass handed to him and screamed at and frightened by a guy with crazy eyes and spit flying from his mouth with righteous fury? Where are the fics with Billy being seen and heard and protected and loved by a wonderful freak of a man that doesn't think twice about showing compassion and understanding and forgiveness and acceptance?

What I'm saying is, Murray Bauman may not be the first person you think of as parent material, but he'd certainly be a great one.

And he'd have no compunction about getting rid of the bastard before him. No one would ever find the fucking body.

dont know how yet. but toying w the idea of something along the lines of— the apocalypse goes wrong, but instead of falling into the cage, michael and adam are shot back in time. something about michaels wings being injured his grace being leeched away so they cant just pop back to their time. michael says he will heal in time hoping it will be quick but. it is not.

~200 years sharing a body on earth. adam grappling with the past and history. michael actually living among humans within a vessel with no big Purpose other than just waiting to heal. building a life over and over again before having to move on before people notice how adam doesn’t age. living through horrible events not being able to change anything. michael thinks god will find them, adam tries increasingly ridiculous ways of contacting the future that never work out. looking for angels who would hopefully help them. something with lily sunder. meeting monsters esp immortal ones. maybe they even meet rowena who knows. reaching the year kate milligan was born.

eventually realizing like. what would they even do when they got back to their present? both of them are entirely changed, different, faithless. neither of them even have something to get back to. over a hundred years waiting only to realize they weren’t waiting for anything, really.

and i think it ends oh somewhere still a while before their present but it’s chuck decides he wants to use michael so he heals his wings and his grace and they only want to use it to travel within the past but chuck pulls them to 2019. still missing a decade. this time michael doesn’t go back to chuck in the end because he spent all that time with humanity and doesn’t see how destroying them could be in any way good. and from there? no idea. happily ever after or whatever.

thinking of all the different types of soulmate aus i loved in my youth and their midam potential.

everything u draw shows up on them? adam doodling on his arm and in heaven everyones like um michael there is. i think thats a flower? allll up in u.

seeing in black and white until you meet your soulmate? the first time adam sees color is when he looks at michaels true form and then immediately hes in the cage for a thousand years. something something dreamscape in his memories all black and white even though he Should be able to see color vs michaels angel memories being his only exposure to a colorful world.

timer on the wrist? adam dies before it runs out but it keeps going in heaven he thinks he’ll meet them there and then he’s too wrapped up in yk. being tortured and abandoned and possessed to realize it ran out. stop aging until you meet your soulmate? adam has a nifty excuse for why he looks like hes 19 (but not for why he vanished for 10 years) and michael worries that he’ll prevent adam from knowing he’s met his soulmate so he makes himself a new body and adam immediately starts aging.

body swap for a day? oh baby. adam wakes up and he’s suddenly an incomprehensible being who is expected to Literally Run Heaven but he’s honestly a little more stressed out about the fact that apparently GOD (or his stand-in) is gonna be taking his finals that day. can only hope god knows how to do calculus.

Know what I love about the “Go research what happens in an abortion, and you’ll change your mind” folks?

It didn’t work with me.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with pregnancy, so I read anything I could get my hands on. Obviously I not only learned about the “wonders” of pregnancy, I learned about the dangers as well. 

Combine this with learning about how an abortion procedure is done, and you get someone who is extremely pro-choice because no one should be forced to go through pregnancy if they don’t want to.

I think about the concept of self-diagnosis a lot tbh. And here’s why.

As a kid, growing up in the 90′s (I was born in 1992), none of my behavior was seen as not normal at home. My parents didn’t see any reason to get my behavior checked out, so I didn’t get diagnosed with anything. 

When I got into college, I struggled, but was so independent that I saw asking for help as a weakness, and again, no one said anything, so beyond getting assessed at the on-campus clinic with depression and anxiety, nothing else was looked at.

I’m 30 now. I’m still struggling with the things I struggled with as a kid, I’m still struggling with the things I struggled with in college, and realistically, I’m probably going to be struggling with a lot of this many, many years down the road. 

Because I definitely think that I have ADHD.

If I’m watching ADHD TikToks, and find them relatable, it’s not because I see them as quirky and fun. It’s because I’ve dealt with those things before TikTok even became popular. 

I want to get diagnosed, but I don’t know for sure the steps involved. And at this point, it doesn’t feel worth the effort because I’m probably just going to hear that I got diagnosed because it’s trendy, not because I genuinely struggle.

Somehow I have lucked out with not one but two doctors who are listening to me regarding the symptoms that I deal with on a daily basis. And so far I also have managed to avoid the "Maybe someday you'll change your mind" talking point about having kids.

Kinda hoping this trend for myself continues honestly.

Started watching Gravitation again, and all I can think is that Yuki is a lot more patient with Shuichi than I originally thought. There’s this bouncy 18 year old with pink hair and a desire to be validated, and the 22 year old is just like, “Yeah, sure, I can give you this validation because I know what it’s like to want someone else to care about me.” 

And of course, while Shuichi can be pretty self-focused, he really does care about Yuki, wanting Yuki to know that he’s loved, regardless of whatever he’s gone through.
