Visual Effects in Only Friends MV part 2
The second song on the Only Friends OST dropped today; So What? by the amazing Ford Arun. Much like the first MV for Only Friends, this one is also has visual frameworks that made me stop and stare.
youtube
Just like my first post on this subject, where I talked about the late 90s/early 00s aesthetic of the show as well as controlled voyeurism (aka we only see what they want us to see), these themes show up again here, but a little differently. Unlike the Let's Try MV and the BTS vids which use multiple different effects and transitions as well as framing a lot of the scenes to look like (possibly) 90s camcorder footage, So What? has two visual effects (I think technically three, and I'll point out why I say it this way in a minute).
The first one is the camcorder footage effect. Except that it's even different from the Let's Try MV. While the Let's Try MV has the "play" prompt onscreen and time stamps, it now, to me, feels more like CCTV video than camcorder video. The video effect on So What? is definitely camcorder footage because it is time and date stamped.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, the time and date stamp is February 1st, 2020 at 6:06pm for every screen it appears on, which to me cannot be an accurate date/time for any of the scenes. Several of these scenes were from episodes 4, 5, 6, or potentially yet to air. Chuem drops info about Covid in episode one and in February of 2020, we were so early into the pandemic during that time that I'm not sure she would have referred to it so casually, plus with no Covid precautions being taken onscreen it does feel the show is set currently (aka 2023).
Why this date? Why 6:06pm? WHAT IS JOJO TRYING TO SAY HERE? Is this a specific reference to something upcoming on the show? Is this date famous in Thailand for something? Did he just pull a date and time out of a hat?
Onto the second effect: the yellow text on the screen is back! It was heavily used as a visual effect in episode one, and after a discussion with @ignoranaxed I did add it to my Narrative Frameworks post where I'm tracking visual effects on the show. We discussed whether or not this was an homage or reference to SKAM Norway, an extremely popular coming of age teen drama that had an amazingly done queer season (Season three. If nothing else, stop what you're doing and go watch SKAM Norway season three. You can thank me later). The show was so popular it has been remade in Spain, Italy, France, Germany (named Druck), Belgium (named WtFock), the United States and has even been announced as a Korean (BL?) drama for next year.
Tumblr media
Is this an actual homage? I came down on the side of maybe. I can't swear it is, but I can't say it isn't. That yellow text on the screen is iconic due to SKAM Norway, and it is used in every single remake of the show (if Korea doesn't use it, I will cry. Also, if Korea doesn't release/air it in the same way, I will cry). Leaving that aside, the yellow text is in Thai, and as yet, I have no idea what it says because my subs only translated the song lyrics, not the onscreen words. If anyone who knows Thai can help me with this, I would love you forever because there's one other thing that shows up in yellow on the screen, and it's this:
Tumblr media
WHY AN ELLIPSES, JOJO? WHAT DID IT SAY BEFORE THIS? I NEED TO KNOW WHY IT'S TRAILING OFF. IS IT TO BE CONTINUED? THE NOT KNOWING WILL DRIVE ME INSANE.
Onto the third , but maybe not really an effect: Is Ford photoshopped in here?
Tumblr media
I ask this because if he is (and I can't quite tell but I think maybe?) then does that mean this is future footage coming up on the show? Or, like Let's Try MV did with it's extra SandRay footage in the car, was this just shot for the MV? I'm curious to see what people think on this.
Now for the rest of the MV where I just melt down because WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS DRAMA BETWEEN YO AND PLUG, JOJO? YOU CAN'T DO THIS. Also, is this Sand hugging Yo?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can't do this to my girl. This will hurt.
Do we think this is Boston and Nick potentially going ice skating or roller skating? Because if it's roller skating, JOJO I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER.
Tumblr media
In summary, the visual frameworks are back in play once again and what they're choosing to show and how feel important.

4 years of Druck S3 - week 4
Things of note in this episode:
First, obviously we all love the end of the episode and there’s really nothing more to say about it after so many people have said so many brilliant things already.  So here, have some of my favourite shots of the end scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, of course there are other things to be said, so here are some thoughts:
Tumblr media
1. ‘Why are you religious?  It’s 2019, you’re an intelligent girl’ forcefully reminds me of ‘it’s 2016, get out of the closet’ and it hit me more than usual this time just how grossly ignorant both those statements were.  So, as much as I still think Emma should have apologised to Isak, I also think Matteo definitely needed to apologise to Amira here (like he kind of does later??? But also not really???? Unless I really did forget something).  This statement about her religion is just as shitty as the one about being in the closet and she was 100% in the right to call him out on it.  I get where he’s coming from and why, but yikes.
Tumblr media
2.  The start of the in jokes they share with each other - followed up later this episode by Matteo saying he wants cheese toasts again sometime and of course David’s most best social media post ever (not quite this episode, but related!!):
Tumblr media
Speaking of these in jokes, I do love that Matteo perks up so much when he gets this stuff from David.  I tend to think of him as someone who overthinks (think of the questions he asks both Jonas and Amira around being gay and how he keeps stepping into trouble because of it when he’s just trying to sort his thoughts out) and after the events at the end of episode 3, his thoughts must have been in a right whirl.  So getting this proof that David is also still in the moment, and calling back to other moments they shared, must have been so relieving for him.
Tumblr media
3.  Nothing new here, but I do love how soft his voice goes when he says David’s name.  This guy has it bad!!!! Good thing David is about to show that he’s feeling it all as well :D
Tumblr media
4.  Having said that, this whole bit with Sara is so uncomfortable.  Don’t get me wrong, this is super realistic, but it’s still difficult to watch.  First, the way it’s filmed is very clever but also so awkward to watch.  There is a wonderful series of videos which analyses this season which can be found here and goes into detail about how the camera works in this scene so I won’t go into more detail.  But second - Sara’s clearly trying to do silly boyfriend/girlfriend stuff with Matteo but it’s so unnatural and strained/forced.  Of course he isn’t interested in going away together once school finishes!  They’ve only been together a few weeks at most.  And the pregnancy April fool?  Sooooo weird given their relationship and lack of sexual aspects to it.  No wonder his reaction is ????? It’s hard to see her so happy though - she’s trying so hard and wants it so bad that she’s kind of convinced herself that this is something different.

I just finished skam italia season 5 today and...... surprisingly i love it so much!!! I think from all of the original season that we got from the remakes, it deserve to be put on top 3 after druck's nora and skamfr's lola.
The whole thing about elia's body insecurity is makes a lotttttttt of sense. It may seems simple, but honestly penis size always become a great deal among boys and a lot of teenager experience it. It also feel refreshing because this kind of theme never got explored in another skam.
I also love how they potray how elia still can't get over his mother's death and despise his father for having a new relationship. I mean, I know it's not fair for his father, but it's always hurt most how the people that you expect would be in as much pain as yours slowly moved on.
I also really love how they handle the friendship dynamics between the whole cast. Contrabbandieri always be my favorite version from all of the boy squad, and it super clear that they learn a lot of thing from martino's problem in season 2. They notice elia is down? They immediately ask him why. They notice that luca is uncomfortable? They immediately say sorry.
And not only the dynamics within contrabbandieri, but also the dynamics between the whole group. Elia x fede bonding, elia x le matte heart-to-heart moment, elia x fillipo roommate bonding, elia x niccoló moment we've never thought about before, le matte's internal friendship, the fact that they also never forget to include rose squad everytime they having a party.
And!!!! we even get the contrabbandieri x villa boy moment that we've been waiting since season 1 (the fact that netflix once again bringing chicco rodi and mention rocco martucci because we obsessed with them is so funny lmao). I also surprisingly love viola and all of her friend. I love how similar they're to le matte in season 1, asia definitely stood out to me.
AND ONE THING THAT I'M SOOOOO GRATEFUL FOR is how sana mention that malik would convert back to Islam, and it's not for her, but because he find a great imam and finally believing in Allah again. I LOVE THIS MOMENT SO MUCH!!! We never got sana x practising muslim in any other version, so this moment got me in tears 😭
ALSO! The whole spera thing is a really massive plot twist. Butttt, I kinda like it. It show us that sometimes the person that you supposedly trust the most (he is a teacher + counselor, he is supposed to be one of the people that you should trust the most) could be a horrible person, a pedophile.
The final scene when le matte closing their radio is also an emotional thing for me, it kinda look like they saying goodbye and passing the torch to the next gen, I mean it's fine by me if they decide to have a next season with a next gen, but it just don't feel the same......
The only 'meh' thing I found in this season is the car crash. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE HECK all of the remakes seems super obsessed with car crash?! 😭 It didn't give any depth to the story itself. And also the moment in the finale when elia suddenly ready to have sex with viola? Right after he talk about it to the new school counselor. It just feel too rushed out.....
ANYWAY, I honestly love this season. The friendship is amazing, the storyline is good, the cinematography is top notch, i also love the effort of bringing almost all of the characters from season 1 - 4 (It would be perfect if we could see ele and incantava moment for the last time though), and the acting!!!! especially from francesco is super good, he definitely one of the best actor in skamverse. This season feels just like any other season of skam italia, and I honestly need to see more of them, maybe please give us another season netflix? 🤞

afterthoughts💜 - Druck
It's time to get back to cringey German dialogue & the big yellow letters - Druck Mailin aired the first episode yesterday & I am here to share my thoughts on it.
aesthetically, this episode reminded me more of the original version, Skam, than any other Druck episode before! i thought the shots were very beautiful, especially the one with Mailin & Finn at the party - it reminded me a lot of Noora & William watching penetrator Chris in season 2 of Skam. major throwback to 16-year-old me.
speaking of Skam, i'm guilty of scrolling through the comment section while watching youtube. i thought, maybe i'd find someone also being reminded of the original skam aesthetic but i was a bit disappointed since i saw now reference at all. has anyone who watches Druck seen Skam? if so, reach out to me, i'd love to chat about it :)
i'm excited to see where the plot is going with Mailin - i liked that they showed her clearly being uncomfortable when the other girls started talking about sex, whether she might be asexual or not, i think it is generally really refreshing to see characters who are not "all about" dating or hook up culture, we see enough of it on tv already!
while i see a lot of people highly praising the actors' performances, i'm really not sure about it yet - i like the "one on one" scenes, for example Fatou & Mailin before they go to the party, but something is off about the group scenes, but that also might be because i'm really bad at enjoying german dialogue; for me as a native speaker, it just always sounds unnatural & somewhat stelted
hopefully, this season won't focus on whatever is going on between Mailin & Finn - until now, Druck (& Skam, too, but they only had 4 seasons) always told the story around a potential love interest. it would be really cool to see them moving away from that, but i probably should not have that high hopes.
i loved the football scene! i mean- was that an action scene? in Druck? it was really different to how they usually shoot the show & they did a great show in making the other players being fond of Mailin in contrast to them being like oh shit a girl is better than me in football, how come? - so yeah, thanks, Druck, loved it!
however, why did Mailin just straight up run away? she could have said something to them? things like that always take me out of a show immediately & i'm like why? why did you do this?
Mailin is literally me at any social event ever.
in general, i am looking forward to next week. fingers crossed, they might not only focus on a relationship this time. 🤞
also, if you have not seen Skam but you like Druck, oh boy do i recommend it to you!

Here we are at the end of Amira's (too short) season! German expert Andy is back to help us dissect everything in episodes 6-7 of DRUCK's Season 4. It is a complete journey, but we can't help but wonder what else they could've explored had she received a full season?

Ranking the SKAM Remakes!
Hi! This is my first ever time posting on Tumblr so I felt like it would be good to introduce myself. And what better way to do that on an account dedicates to SKAM than talk about my favourite remakes! This list goes from 7th to 1st place with 1 being the best.
In dead last…: SKAM FRANCE 🇫🇷: If you would’ve asked me what my favourite remake was 2 years ago, this one definitely would’ve been up there. The original actors were so perfect and the storylines felt totally realistic and relatable to me, despite being quite similar to the original SKAM. In season 3 when Eliott talks to Lucas about his bipolar and how with a mental illness you have good days and bad days, I felt totally seen. It felt like Eliott was speaking my truth. And then the original seasons came. I really season 5, in fact it’s my favourite season of the show. Season 6 was pretty good too, but after that the show just lost its appeal to me. It just feels like they pump out some random ‘big’ social issue for dramatic effect at the start of the season and expand on it a bit and then just go back to scenes of the Mif. And season 8, that was honestly just a mess. We didn’t even get to see Bilal in his new house! I’ve not seen seasons 9 or 10 yet but I don’t even know if I should bother. The show doesn’t feel like SKAM anymore and more like a French Euphoria. Do you guys think I should watch seasons 9 or 10? Tell me in the comments.
6th Place: WTFOCK 🇧🇪: For me, this remake is always pretty good. It’s never really been my favourite but I can see the appeal for others; it’s cute and Sobbe really do have great chemistry. But my issues for this show lie in 2 of its seasons: seasons 1 and 4. Personally, season 1 is always the hardest SKAM season to watch, I don’t know why but I never seem to properly connect with the Eva characters. But with Jana, I didn’t connect at all. I found her really annoying and whiney and she just made the season really difficult and boring to follow. Seasons 2 and 3 of this show are great, in fact I’d go as far to say that this show had the best season 2. But then we had season 4. I think it’s cool that they introduced Kato as a new character but her season was pretty bad. They had so much potential to give us a season about the differences between Instagram and reality, or even expand on Kato’s self harm a little bit more than just those 2 scenes. For me, watching the season didn’t really excite me at all. I liked season 5 though, even though Yasmin’s didn’t get the completely best ending, it did really well at illustrating how POC are pretty much always dealt the short end of the stick.
5th Place: Druck 🇩🇪: I don’t know what it was about this remake but I just never felt like it was giving me too much like the others. It’s a good solid remake that dares to be creative a bit whilst still staying true to the source material, but apart from that, that’s all I can really say about it. I liked Druck’s idea of giving a trans character the spotlight in season 3 and exploring the world of trans rights in German schools but the rest of this remake just feels so ‘meh’. It all just kinda fell flat and was really underwhelming. At the new seasons in this show still have an ounce of SKAM blood in them, I can actually kind of relate to some of the characters. In season 7 when Kieu My was talking about her struggles accepting her bisexuality, I totally understood what she felt because I’ve had very similar struggles with my sexuality. The new of seasons of Druck, like the original seasons, show a character developing and growing which is something I really like. Overall this show is a good solid remake, just a bit boring and flat in parts. 4th Place: SKAMNL 🇳🇱: This remake was so cute!! I’m currently watching it just now and it’s totally adorable! The girl squad seem to get on really well and they always have each other’s backs. My main criticism of the show is it’s season 2. Honestly, the guy who replaces Eskild just annoys me so much! He doesn’t seem as cool and supportive as the original and the whole vibe of the flatshare just feels off. Despite being adorable, season 2 just has really weird vibes and I’m not really a fan.
3rd Place: SKAM España 🇪🇸: The one thing I’m commending this show for is its inventiveness. It added so many differences to the original show that it was genuinely super interesting to watch. This show had one of the only few Eva seasons that I didn’t dislike. I also like the changes they made to seasons 3 and 4 and I felt like they were excellently done, perfect! Also Alejandro was so chill and the only William that I didn’t think was a toxic asshole! But then we had season 2. I loved the fact that they gave us sapphic representation and let it be a couple of 2 girls instead of another 2 skinny white boys kissing. As someone who likes girls themself, it was really great to finally see the representation that I’d been so needing from the skamverse. Unfortunately for me, the season just fell flat. It just felt the entire time like something was missing. It just felt kinda boring and uninteresting compared to the other Evak seasons. I’m really glad they made the season not spicy though and they managed to craft a cute love story without making it oversexualised. It was a pretty good show, but season 2 was kinda boring at points.
2nd Place: SKAM Austin 🇺🇸: This remake is so adorable it just makes my heart smile so much sjdjfhfgfhdjidjdhd. I really loved how cute and adorable everything was, especially Kelsey, she literally has my heart. Kelsey was definitely the best Vilde, now of course she has her moments but she’s so lovely and so supportive of everyone and I really liked her. I really enjoyed seeing how an American version of the show turned out and it’s honestly just awesome. The only criticism I really have of SKAM Austin is that because it’s American and it’s very American, I didn’t really relate fully to the characters and stories as much as I could have would it have been another European remake.
1st Place 🥇: SKAM ITALIA!!!!!!!!!! 🇮🇹: This show is perfect! The acting, the cinematography, everything is just beautiful. I really liked all of the seasons in this show and I’m glad they did them in the ways they did. In season 1 we saw Eva develop into a really good friend. In season 2, we saw Martino and Niccolò develop a beautiful romance but we were also shown what it’s like to be gay in Italy. It’s awful, we fear for our lives because the country isn’t necessarily the most accepting, especially the older generations. Season 3 was great too, Ele was given the time and space she needed to process her sexual assault and I’m glad that the show let her come to her boyfriend to talk about what happened instead of making her have the words taken from her mouth. In season 4, they managed to humanise Sana in a way that the other remakes didn’t. I love this show and I really hope they don’t ruin it with the original season that they announced at the start of the year.

skam and all remakes that finished with 4 season or less: okay yay i hope everyone enjoyed 4 seasons :)
wtfock: hmm let’s add a character that comes out of nowhere and has some controversy to spice up the storyline but then come back with yasmina for our last season
druck: hmm okay 4 is not enough, let’s make up a whole new generation of characters and go to 6 seasons. yeah that sounds good :)
skam france: okay so we’re in season 20, about to reveal our 4th generation of characters. lucas and eliott are already grandpas and tiffany is a happy mom with max. we should go for 30 seasons. maybe 40 just to be even.
skam nl and austin: ive been dead... dead as hell

I wasn’t gonna make this post but honestly? Fuck it, I have nothing to lose. I’m tired of the way the skamverse fandom has spoken over people of color for years. From the way Muslim fans were treated back when season 4 of the og was airing, to now telling black and other poc to shut up and stop hating on druck’s choice of making Mailin main. Oh gee, I wonder why we’re angry about the fact they decided to give the presumable last season to yet another white cis character when characters like Ava Pereira, (who’s been hated by the fan base for calling out Mailin’s micro aggressions and for disliking her bullies) Josh and Kieu My exist. Yeah, because white people are in need of representation (sarcasm).
I just love seeing white people say how we have to wait and see, and talking about us and our experiences as if they were experts? New flash asshole, you 👏🏽 are 👏🏽 white!! You don’t know and will never know what we go through. You think you’re better than other white people in this fandom just because you’re not “fake woke”? Please, don’t make me laugh.
Stop speaking over us, sit the fuck back down and listen to what we have to say. Stop getting offended when you’re called out and instead take the time to learn.

4 years of Druck s3 - week 9
Things of note this episode:
Tumblr media
1.  The relief, honestly.  Seeing them at this point, all ;yep we love each other’ was so cathartic.  We’d all been through the wringer this week (the pacing!! was so frustrating!!!! even without the emotions that came with it) and we all really really needed this!  To that end, the yelling and the huge emotions in this scene were also really needed and cathartic.  But it wasn’t until the ‘I love you’s that I was able to relax.  The follow-up social media was really good too, and definitely cemented this feeling, and I just love it all so much.
Tumblr media
2.  I love the way this relationship with his mother has developed.  Over the last three episodes, Matteo has become more understanding  of his mother and her issues.  And through this whole thing with David, he’s just wanted to reach her.  He’s talked about her or to her so much lately but it’s not until now that he really allows himself to feel his emotions around all of this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3.  Before the relief we had sad boy time again.  It still makes my heart hurt how strongly he feels everything.  I mean, it’s good in that at the start of the season his sad boy aesthetic was much more about being checked out and apathetic, but he’s still not happy, he feels that on a bone deep level, and it hurts.  Even if, as I remind myself, he gets to be happy at the end of the episode, it’s hard to watch these earlier bits.  The one really positive thing is that he has people supporting him now, and those people are fully aware of who he is and they’re still there for him.  There’s also a sort of relief in that as well - AND that allows him to be all ‘actually David, I don’t promise it won’t be shit because it probably will, but you have me and you have this whole support group so you have time to deal now’ and I kind of love that he keeps taking lessons he’s learned for himself and gifting them to others.
Tumblr media
4.  Speaking of people supporting him, I do really love the bond he has with this little group of guys.  They really are, as he says here, the best friends a guy could have.  They’re chaotic, often dumb, occasionally offensive and yet they have hearts of gold and they are totally there for Matteo particularly now they have all the details about what’s going on with him.  Plus, even now they are ready to welcome David 100%.  It’s sad to read Matteo’s messages about ‘hey David will be back by then, can he come too?’ when we know what’s going to happen.  But the fact the boys are all so chill about having him there is lovely.  They’re lovely.
Tumblr media
5.  Amira’s brand of pep talk actually works here because Matteo is in a better place.  And also because they did their little clarification the previous episode and so there’s no simmering weirdness between them around religion and homosexuality.  I really love the ways in which they changed and grew both as separate people (which obviously continues for Amira into her season) but also as friends.  They always liked each other well enough, but now I think they respect each other far more and it’s nice.
Tumblr media
6.  I couldn’t leave without some further relief.  After so much emotion, even in this clip itself, it’s so nice when they crack smiles together and recognise that whatever else happens, wherever else this goes, they’re on the same page and even though at this point David hasn’t said it yet, they’re giddy with delight together - and we as an audience know for sure that it’s all going to be okay.  There are still issues, David has made that very clear, but they can deal with them as a team and that’s what matters.

So, my wish list for Druck s8:
1. More research of the writers on whatever topic they'll choose to represent
2. Communication between the old writers and new writers, if they're not coming back, so that the next season won't feel as disconnected as s7 did
3. Less involvement of Bantry Bay/ Funk/ whoever that was responsible for the questionable choices made in s7
4. A season about either Ava, Yara or Kieu My (for obvious reasons, if its neither of them its okay as long as the storytelling is good)
5. More specific planing of the Social Media content, it seemed like they had a plan for the 1st half of the season, but afterwards fell off and were scrambling to see what to post
6. The actors shouldn't have to fight for the bare minimum, if I hear that about s8, I'll be flying to Berlin to raise hell for funk/bantry bay
7. Better treatment of Ava, regardless of who is the main, the fact that we haven't seen her since I think ep6 is ridiculous (unless it's because of scheduling conflicts), same for her IG account that has been pretty much dormant since ep6
I think that's about it, feel free to tell me yours!

Gender identity in s7 of DRUCK
I tried to compile all moments that could belong either to the gender identity or the body dysphoria storyline of Isi’s season. Hearing that the s7 main is non-binary (or could be) brought me back to watching live. Which I stopped doing after s4 of Druck. And yeah… it was frustrating this time around.
I started this list shortly after the final episode and it took a while (yeah, i know). I hope I got everything. I’m sorry if something is missing. This got very long…
Episode 1:
1. Isi meets Lou in the toilets. Two gnc people seeing each other for the first time. Is it a mixed toilet? Maybe, but I kinda doubt it. So, one of them is challenging the binary toilet system in the school. Maybe…
2. “Hi Lou, I’m Isi.” - an introduction with gender neutral names. Both of them never use the other’s birth name and therefore respect their choices.
3. “Is this your brother or your sister?” - a teammate of Umut thinks it’s alright to comment on Isi’s appearance and make assumptions, representing society in a nutshell with this. At first it seems like Isi doesn’t really care but then Umut makes it clear that he is effected, which gets to Isi.
Tumblr media
Episode 3:
4. The threesome scare. I’m not sure if this belongs here but Isi’s reaction could be caused by body dysphoria. It also could very well be, because Isi doesn’t want to get sexual with Lou, or Constantin or with both of them together. We don’t know and this is a problem, as it was NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN!!! What was the reason for it? Getting some outrage?
Tumblr media
Episode 4:
5. Isi removes the nail polish after Constantin wore it in an insta post to “fuck with stereotypes” - it’s probably performativ on Consti’s part (and he gets applauded by Lou), but for Isi it goes much deeper than that.
6. “Let’s try to introduce a part for men.” “Not so much hip movement.” “Like dudes in the club.” “Put your hands on my hips like I’m your date.” - the girls say all of this without realizing that Isi is uncomfortable the whole time bc they seemingly don’t identify with any of these stereotypes.
7. Isi is watching the YouTube video about gender identity. It is nice. It’s a nod to how the mains always google stuff. But again it’s a shallow treatment of this topic. It’s only one short scene that is later overshadowed by family trouble. It could‘ve been the start of something but -like a lot of other things- was never really picked up again.
8. Sascha calls their get together ‘girl‘s night’ and Isi is okay with it. Isi feels comfortable with the girls and with Sascha calling it girl’s night. They know Sascha isn’t mocking them.
9. Consti assumes that Isi only likes guys because of the way she dresses/presents. Consti has no idea that there is so much more to it and I think he doesn’t care enough to learn more about it. Again presenting society in a nutshell.

Episode 5:
10. “You know exactly who you are?” - “Don‘t you?” - “I‘m always different.” - “I like that about you.” - “You can be everything you want.” - important convo for Isi to hear, after Isi didn’t know how to dress and and style himself and was so overwhelmed that he covered up the mirror. Isi kinda relates to Lou and her saying this and making them feel better is so important.
11. “I nearly didn‘t recognize you.“ - Isi tries to fit in by dressing like ‘one of the boys’. She does this for her brother, even tho you can see how uncomfortable she is. This is really sad. Even sadder that Umut is still mad (even if it is understandable, he is a very impressionable young teenager). In the end no one is happy with this.
12. “You don’t have to adept for anyone.” - “How would you know? I have to adept every day. Whatever I do. I don’t fit in. They want one or the other.” - honestly one of the best scenes. Sascha is like the audience that finally gets to hear how Isi feels and listens intently. Sascha/the audience cannot make it easier for Isi but it’s important that Isi knows someone is in their corner to catch them if they need it. Finally some insight! Finally some feelings! (They still do not really continue this throughoutly)
13. “Boys right. Girls left.“ - with Isi being unsure where to go but eventually deciding to ‘fit in’ with the boys and society norms before Lou ‘saves’ them and gives them an excuse to get out of the situation.

Episode 6:
14. Mailin and Isi talk about Umut ignoring Isi. And Mailin asks about Isi playing and quitting football. Isi says that it was too “football-ish” and Mailin agrees and says she, too, had a hard time when she started training the boys. I think it is heavily implied that gender roles/expectations played a big part in both their stories.
15. Isi goes to the queer youth center with Sascha. They meet David, by chance. Isi talks to him and David mentions body dysphoria. I still don’t know why they didn’t dig deeper after this. They had a good set up. Wasn’t the show supposed to educate about important topics? They really dropped the ball with this one. This could’ve been a catalyst.
Tumblr media
Episode 7:
16. “Hey Umut. Your sister is here.” - the teammate at it again. And he chuckles. He thinks he’s funny. Isi makes Umut listen to him. They talk about it beautifully, touching topics of what being ‘normal’ even means, pretending to be someone you’re not and losing yourself over it. It was way too short but heartfelt and very important.
17. “Just because you think I kiss men anyway. Or whatever you made up in your head.” - “no worries. I know now how you are. You made out with Lou.” - The talk from the garage never really got solved and it is kinda picked up here. Isi still is mad at Consti’s assumptions, rightfully tho. And Consti doesn’t even listen and continues to assume stuff about Isi without ever asking. Consti still mistakes gnc clothing, gender identity and sexual orientation. He doesn’t care. He is hurt and doesn’t try to understand, not even for his friend’s sake.

Episode 9:
18. Mr. Önder is harassing Isi and Umut by stopping them and telling Isi that he disapproves of who Isi is and how Isi presents. Again, nobody asked but this is sadly pretty accurate, nosy neighbours and all. I love (!) how Isi is very angry, at first, but then looks at Umut and sees that he is afraid. Isi changes her behaviour on the spot and exposes Mr. Önder’s double standards in a really mature way.
19. Umut and Isi talk about Zeki Müren and this may be the sweetest talk they have. Isi tells Umut about the singer and Umut compares Isi to him. It’s a beautiful end to their storyline where Umut just excepts Isi and encourages them.
20. HOLY RAINBOW NIGHT: the culmination of Isi’s journey (if you can call it that). We have Billie who is very good at creating a calming environment. Billie also shows Isi that it is okay to have no pronouns by simply showing the name tag.
21. Then we have David who introduces the idea behind the name tag: no awkwardness just enjoy the night without feeling wrong. And he, too, creates an atmosphere that feels save. At first Isi goes along like always and just bends herself for society norms. But then they look around and recognise a safe space. Unlike ep 5, where Lou came to the ‘rescue’, Isi now stands up for himself and chooses a name and pronouns that feel right. But this is all new and Isi is still unsure about it. Then David steps in: “just try it out.” Reassuring Isi again, that she is save here (that’s when I cried).

Episode 10:
22. At the Christmas dinner we have the family discuss Mr. Önder because he came around to complain. When Isi’s parents hear the whole story, they immediately start reassuring Isi about herself and telling her, that they are proud. Then Baba Inci plays best of Zeki Müren. And all of them dance and celebrate the music (and Isi).
23. Since body dysphoria is also part of Isi story, at least in some scenes, I wanna mention Isi and Sascha’s Christmas night clip. I think it’s refreshing that the one being a bit insecure seems to be Sascha, not Isi. Isi feels save and therefore is confident in the physical part which is heartwarming. They found someone who takes them as they are. Isi CAN just be who they are. Kinda leaving body dysphoria and struggling with their gender identity as problems for the outside world, while they create this permanent safe haven, which is really beautiful.
24. As they’re preparing for the their dance performance Isi tells his friends that they only want to use Isi as a name from now on. Isi still seems precarious and tries to give their friends (and themself) an out, if they don’t take it well. But both, Kieu My and Nora, make sure that Isi knows that it isn’t an effort for them and that they will adapt for Isi, no questions asked. With this, another safe space is created. This also spilled over to Insta where Isi and their close friends now have their pronouns in their bios. This should’ve been a Clip, tho.
25. The last clip is Isi just embracing herself and enjoying it. First Isi sits in front of her mirror again. While they struggle to use the right lipstick, in the end Isi is satisfied with how they look. Later at the dance performance she is confident and you don’t see any of the struggles she had at the beginning. The new year begins for Isi surrounded by friends, finally having the strength to embrace herself.

In conclusion:
The build-up in Isi’s journey isn’t always super clear and should’ve been a center piece of their story but it did linger there throughout the whole season. They could’ve (or should’ve!!!) done better. Still, some scenes/clips are amazing and have a special place in my heart. I’m proud of and happy for Isi, this fictional character, who struggled with their identity and got to a good place in the end. It’s what Isi deserves and what everyone else deserves, who’s struggling because society is harsh, if you don’t fit in.

Look, I love all the Skams, and the couples are all epic, and I love them with all my heart, but no one is out here doing it like the New gen Druck writers, and Kieutou!
The new gen writers really said we’re going to have the main of S6 say this first and last words in S5, that add up to a beautiful sentence of hope.
Introduce the future LI and have them be a fleshed out character, while still having loads to reveal. Thread through the show that the two are already destined, and into each other. As well as have them communicating via IG, and having their IG give hints to the audience about their genuine self and desires.
Having them dress as the same character for halloween and comment on the other’s costume months before it’s revealed in their season, their love of horror films. Have the future LI start following gay accounts relatively recently before the following season, indicating Kieu My may have just discovered her bisexuality. Then confirming this with her showing insecurity with how to flirt with girls, and being worried she’s gotten terms wrong.
Having the IG of the character termed ‘the ice queen’, who projects a superficial veneer, show their intelligence, and that they’re just as dorky as Fatou by having the accounts they follow show a deep interest in astronomy, which compliments Fatou’s love of space, as shown in Fatou’s room decor and referring to her alias as a space creature when they first flirt. The theme of space penetrating and weaving through both their stories in S5 through to S6 (Fatou wanting to go to the moon for her 50th, and Kieu My wanting to study and live on Mars) culminating in them holding hands when they light up a firework on New year’s eve, and watch as it travels into space, a sign of hope and possibility, and Kieu My revealing she wants to be a scientist, and study Mars. Then thereafter Fatou reveals she knows Kieu My’s star sign (Scorpio), and we already know Fatou’s sign because she revealed it in S5 (I see you Druck writers!). NOW LISTEN, if we have Fatou as the axolotl, the water and earth is her home, whereas Kieu My is up in the stars. Astrologist’s describe the scorpio/gemini relationship ‘like a connection of the deepest and the highest points on planet Earth’. The meeting of the deep water with the sky!!
A relationship between a Scorpio and a Gemini is not an easy one, as they are also opposites (’Ice queen’ and the ‘Warmest person’, anyone, hello, I’m flying!). Yet, ‘if they accept each other’s differences they will be a nearly unbreakable couple’. If the pair fall deeply in love ‘they will give each other the exact things they lack. Gemini would get deep, emotional satisfaction they have never felt before and Scorpio would finally get the chance to rest their troubled soul’.
A Scorpio can teach a Gemini to be more cautious, less naïve, and find deeper emotional satisfaction in life.
A Gemini can teach a Scorpio that not everything needs to be taken so seriously, cheer them up, and get them mingling with the outside world
I literally said this in my Kieutou analysis 4 post *Captain Holt voice* VINDICATION!
The chemistry between Sira and Nhung. Which allows them to bounce off each other, and go from flirting, to serious and deep, to funny banter, and right back again!
The way it’s written by queer writers and every sentence they say just screams of experience, and you’re just sitting, watching it realising it’s one of the most relatable portrayals of teen wlw.
Having them kiss exactly on the verge of 2021, taking us out of this awful year, with hope and happiness!

It’s not Ismail being an unlikeable tool that is my problem with this season. It’s the lack of development of anything.
The pacing is weird af and the clips so short and sporadic that they are rarely coherent.
The core of whatever plot there is, to me, is super interesting but there’s just not enough of it.
I love a bit of an anti-hero. But they’ve just not committed to anything. Things get brought up that seem like they’re going to be relevant only to go no where.
It’s like they’ve thrown every idea they had in the writers room at it, but not bothered to expand on any one point nor make any of it flow. Content of the first 3-4 eps could’ve easily happened in half the time.
I will say this ep and the last have been much better but i still don’t really feel like I know much about anything they’re trying to achieve.
I wanna be in Isi’s head way more.
I mean I 💯 agree the pacing has been so off. For example these last few clips we finally get movement but because druck follows the Friday plot movement clip it usually means that Monday-Wednesday we go back to meandering around the season. This is probably my biggest issue with druck. Like we don’t need to stall the plot is moving let’s keep going with it. DONT STOP! I feel like we are finally getting somewhere and we don’t have that many episodes left to the season. I agree the gender issues really should have taken center stage instead of whatever the consti and Lou plot was. I just think we could have easily communicated how toxic Ismail and consti are as friends without lou and 3 episodes following them around just hanging out. I have said from day one that Ismail ends up alone in their season and am sticking to it. Ismail may end up in a situation where sascha says maybe in the future when they grow up but they aren’t there and they aren’t gonna get there in 4 episodes. This season really feels like Arthur’s season to me. Seasons dealing with incredibly delicate topics effecting teens but making the main highly unlikeable and making their LI super like-able. Like I said issue with those set ups is it basically puts the writers in a corner concerning the outcome. It’s clear in druck the outcome is isi being alone and maturing as a person. Not only taking more time to explore what gender means to them but what loyalty and empathy mean when investing in people that care about you. Communicating properly with your family and love ones. Like I said I don’t see how the outcome of this season isn’t Ismail working on himself as a person. It was the same with Arthur and it was the same with Lola (her outcome had to be rehab there was no other option because of the writing). Like you said I don’t mind antihero seasons they just corner the writers into an outcome and so the lead up has to be kinda of perfect. Also concerning the writing the writing room is new and they wrote 1/2 episodes each and handed off and it shows. Some of these episode like you said could have been cut in half. At this point I just want to see Ismail work on themselves at the end. That’s for me the only real valuable outcome.
