lyrical analysis of love you forever

or, breaking down ricky's love (confession) for gina

we're a little under three months out from the series finale of high school musical: the musical: the series. I've spent those months freaking out over rina and appreciating the beautiful arc they got in s4 that closed out their story over the course of the series. there are a million special moments that rina has in s4 (I mean, a rain kiss? can I have this dance? a duet together about their commitment to each other despite uncertainty? we really got it all) but one definitely stands out among the rest. love you forever is ricky's declaration of love for gina that he sings to her at her press conference for her new movie that, as far as he knows, is about to send her across the world. this post is gonna be a line by line analysis of the lyrics, as well as talking about everything that brought them to that moment and that made it special. enjoy <33

I've been wishing on a falling star for too long

this line opens the song and is such a beautiful callback to when there was me and you, the song ricky all but serenades gina with in 1.06 (the lines it references: I thought you were my fairy tale / A dream when I'm not sleeping / A wish upon a star / That's coming true). wtwmay is a song that gabriella sings after troy's betrayal in hsm and when ricky sings this line, to me, it represents a callback to his past relationship with nini. he was holding on to nini and that relationship too tight, wishing on a falling star. as gabriella says, wishes on stars just "don't come true" and for ricky, this relationship ultimately ended in failure. however, as much as this line signifies the crash and burn nature of that relationship, it's also a reference to the start of his relationship with gina in that bunker room as he strummed on a guitar, in a similar fashion to love you forever, to these lyrics.

I've been running, I don't know what from

this line references the conversation that ricky had with ej in 4.05 when ej forces ricky to reckon with the fact that he runs away from those he loves when faced with hard realities and that this tendency hurts both those around him, but also hurts him. it's incredibly full circle when you pair this with the fact that ricky is singing the song on the guitar ej gave him after they sang speak out, where ej tells him that "you'll probably get more use outta this than me" (4.05). i think it's really cool that this line also references gina's similar character flaw of running when things get hard, which she also sings about in second chance (Maybe I'm safer when I'm on the run / No time to open up my heart / Maybe I'll hide behind my walls again / Instead of tearing them apart) (also important to note that second chance is non-digetic and ricky has never heard gina sing these lyrics). so fascinating that ricky and gina have the same habit of running, with ricky running back to things that are familiar and gina pushing forward to leave things in the past before they can hurt her.

But you and I've become a sacred kinda home

this is one of my favorite lines of the song, especially because this theme of finding a home is such a critical cornerstone for both ricky and gina's arcs throughout the show. ricky's home life in s1 turns on its head when he discovers that his parents are separating. pairing this with his breakup with nini nearly sends him into a spiral, but he finds a new home of sorts in the theater program, telling gina "it's just nice to have somewhere to go after school every day, y'know" (1.05), which she herself resonates with, affirming his feelings.

of course, at the beginning of s2, we find out that ricky and his dad are moving to an apartment after his mom moves out. this drastic shift, the loss of his childhood home, is again disorienting, and again paired with changes with nini, what with her moving to denver. in 2.02, he tells nini that she is his home, which is really interesting, placing that kind of pressure on her. but what's even more interesting is that he knows he's moving, knows from the beginning of 2.01, and yet nini does not find out about his new home until 2.03 on valentine's day, months later. this is juxtaposed to gina showing up to his apartment that same episode. it's especially special that ricky is placed in the same situation that gina typically faces, the unpacking and getting accustomed to a new space. it is those undertones that serve as the undercurrent for their conversation. the apartment is in disarray when gina arrives, and remains that way for much of the season. gina, however, is endeared by the messy environment of the apartment and jokes along with ricky to put him at ease. by the time we return to it in s4, it's (naturally) much more lived in, with clothes strewn about, pictures of gina, and aptly placed posters lining the wall of ricky's room.

as I mentioned earlier, ricky calls nini his home in s2. this line says that he and gina together have become a home of sorts for each other. singing this to gina is important for ricky, but it also speaks to the unpredictable nature of gina's childhood, where she moved from city to city, never staying in one place for more than a few months, which she tells ricky in 1.05. by the end of s1, we think that she has to move again, something that's harder for her now that she's made connections with the wildcats, namely with ricky. as we see in the flashback scene in 2.06, she tells ricky that she wouldn't quit on them if not for her move, that they would essentially remain close if she weren't leaving salt lake. of course, she doesn't leave and instead moves in with ashlyn. it's her first taste of stability that she can really remember, but as she tells carlos in 2.04, she feels out of place living in a house she doesn't own and with a family that isn't hers. these feelings culminate in gina wanting to leave, a subplot we see primarily in 2.05 and 2.06. after revealing to ashlyn what she said to ricky opening night of hsm, ashlyn sings home from beauty and the beast to gina, telling her that she has a home with ashlyn, not just physically, but within their friendship. there is so much symbolism in that one scene that we don't have time to get into but this moment definitely shifts gina's perception of what a home can look like. in s3, we learn that her mom is moving back to salt lake city where she'll be staying long-term to allow gina to complete her time at east high. in fact, it's in this very house that we get our first scene of rina in s4, with ricky sneaking into her window. one's room is a reflection of oneself, and ricky and gina are all over each other's rooms, both literally and figuratively, throughout the season. combining this with the connection between the two that only strengthens over the course of the season, it comes as no surprise that ricky sees his and gina's relationship as a sacred home.

I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love and I know it / No net, no fear, right here in this moment

my twitter account was littered with theories and thoughts and hopes for ricky's love confession to gina, but whether it was public or private, planned or spontaneous, the one thing that I knew I wanted was for ricky to say that he is in love with gina. so on august 9th when ricky got to the chorus of love you forever, tears started pooling in my eyes because the confession, which was already literally perfect, delivered my biggest wish. one of my favorite aspects of the song is how much it reflects their journey because these are all the words that ricky would tell gina in some big speech, evidenced by him practicing all throughout 4.07. but when it comes down to it, after references to moments between them and beautiful metaphors, it builds to him telling gina not only does he love her, but that he's in love with her. there's no doubt in his mind of this fact. the sky is blue, the sun shines, and ricky bowen loves gina porter. so much of ricky's love for nini was tied to fear, especially a fear of change. that his love for gina transcends fear, that he is confident in what he tells her both shows his growth in romantic relationships but also in how much gina has redefined what it means to love someone for him.

I've never been more sure of what I got, yeah / Cause this is so much more than puppy love, so

continuing with the theme of confidence, ricky tells gina that he's never been more sure of what he's got in their relationship. I know I'm bringing rini up a lot but that relationship is a perfect frame of reference for how much ricky has changed when it comes to love. both his singing of I think I kinda you know in 1.01 and his love confession to nini in 1.10, while genuine, are riddled with stuttering and uncertainty ("I think", "I don't know", etc.). when you compare the ricky of 1.01 and the ricky of 4.08 and how he attempts to use song to profess his love, the differences are stark, and that's the point. as he all but said in 3.08, everything he's known about love has been changed by gina and that is reflected in love you forever. I love the puppy love nod and think it's narratively important for so many reasons. for one, it's a reference to their first date, as well as to gina's childhood. in that vein, it seems to mirror what gina tells ricky in 4.02, that mack was a crush of her childhood. calling what they have "more than puppy love" also nods to their growth, not just over the course of the series, but even throughout the season. from dealing with scrutiny in the fallout of the documentary to gina's increasingly busy schedule to their temporary pause to gina nearly moving across the world, they've been faced with many problems, and while they didn't handle all of them perfectly, they handled them together and came out that much stronger.

I'll say it first, no matter what the cost / Here I am full heart, full stop / I love you

in 3.05, ricky talks to jet following the fallout of the real campers of shallow lake drama. he asks jet what he's running from and tells him that sometimes when feelings are hard to articulate, it helps to sing instead. with love you forever, we see ricky taking his own advice. I love that ricky is insistent that he tells gina "I love you" first, both because he wants to rectify mistakes from his last relationship, but also because gina says, in a talking head, that she doesn't want to be the first to say "I love you," (4.06) further cementing the connection that rina has. it also affirms that there is no doubt in either of their minds that they love each other and want to say it to each other. it's also important to note that ricky understands the risk of singing this song at this point in time. for all he knows, gina is about to board a plane that will be taking her to the other side of the world for six months. however, he sings this song, affirms his love for her, no matter the cost, because he just wants her to know. he loves her in salt lake, he loves her in new zealand, and he loves her forever. ricky sings that he is there with a full heart, full stop I love you. in an interview after s3's finale, tim federle, the showrunner, states that while nini will always have a small part of ricky's heart, gina has a way of making hearts race. this line, to me, symbolizes the notion that gina is his heart, that his love for her encompasses it. there's a beautiful analysis of ricky being gina's heart canonically that I think helps tie all of this together, establishing that gina is ricky's heart, just like he is hers.

of course, I would be remiss to not talk about the full stop of it all. as we see in a flashback in 4.06, ricky opens up to gina in their first meeting about how he struggled saying I love you to nini, his ex. after hearing this, gina presents him with a possibility you can tell he's never considered: "maybe you just don't love her, full stop." ricky stutters in response, but doesn't fully negate gina's statement, in fact telling her that he's "kinda" planning on telling nini through song later that night outside her window (ironic that this plan doesn't pan out for him twice in the show, both here and in 2.03). that he brings up this notion of full stop, where there's no room for doubt, in his confession for gina further proves how deep and real and true their love is for each other. super small thing before I move on but I love how "I love you" gets its own special moment of pause in the song to fully communicate the gravity of such a statement.

I never knew that I could feel so sure and so strong /How can three old words feel so brand new?

Again, this idea of being sure comes up again in this second verse/buildup to the chorus. ricky has done the love confession before. he's been in love before. but again, with gina, it's different. it's deeper, more strong, more secure. and so when he says these words, in a situation that mirrors his audition for hsm, of course it feels different. in that auditon, he was singing nini's words back to her. love you forever, in contrast, is all ricky. those three words do feel new because now he's singing them to gina and for gina, where previously he sang them for himself. also a really cool note about the parallels between ricky's audition and love you forever is that tim federle released the initial script for love you forever, and one of the descriptions writes that ricky "launches into the audition of a lifetime." this song, this confession, is the start of his forever with gina. of course these words feel new.

Mm, so rare, so real right here in this moment / And I'm starin' at the only thing I want, so

I tear up hearing ricky say that the love that he has for gina is both rare and real. both ricky and gina, at different points throughout the show, cast doubt on love. ricky says in a talking head in 1.01 that love is dead (fun fact: ricky is wearing the same denim jacket from that talking head during love you forever teehee). gina, in the 4.06 flashback, calls love lame. their faith in love ebbs and flows throughout the show, but once they are together, there's no question. it's why ricky encourages the seblos reconciliation in 4.06 or why gina tells jet to confess his feelings for kourtney in 4.08. if they've found this beautiful love in each other, where they got a second chance on love in every sense of the words, why wouldn't they want that for everyone else, for the people that they love?

the second half of this lyric, of ricky "staring at the only thing he wants," is my absolute favorite line of love you forever. ricky's eyes are naturally drawn to gina in nearly every episode of the show, whether she's looking at him or not, whether they're speaking or not. even before he recognized those feelings in himself, we could see it because she was always the apple of his eye. this rings especially true during love you forever, where ricky does not take his eyes off of gina the entire song, except when miss jenn turns the lights on. gina is the center of his universe and who he has been drawn to since she entered his life. there was a tweet after s4 aired that stated that ricky looks at gina as though he's falling deeper in love with her every time and this line captures that.

I wanna finish what we started in the stairwell where we met

the bridge opens with this line and it's so fitting. to suggest that committing to loving each other forever is finishing what they started when they had that first conversation in the stairwell is so insane and will always make me spiral when I think about it. this line all but confirms that ricky and gina began to fall for each other in that moment. that their conversation in the stairwell is what catalyzed their respective character arcs also all but confirms that they're soulmates, that there was an invisible string that connected them, inexplicably tying their fates together forever.

I wanna live like I have never even heard the word regret

both ricky and gina have instances that they look back on and wish they had done things differently. gina says so explicitly in 2.05 when speaking to kourtney. she alludes to her goodbye to ricky after hsm's opening night, stating that it was something she wishes she could take back. in 3.06, ricky tells jet that he wishes that he didn't let color war gina slip through his fingers, suggesting that he would've done things differently if he were more cognizant of his feelings for her. ricky never wants to feel like that again, that he's missed his chance with gina due to fear. he wholeheartedly embraces his love for her because he knows what it was like to live without it and doesn't want to live in a world where gina isn't his reality.

I wanna scream what's in my heart and I won't ever take it back

ricky and ej's duet in 4.05 is about speaking your truth and speaking even when it's hard. the song even has a line about "screaming out." where in speak out, screaming out solicits no sound, ricky singing this line in love you forever is him being able to vocalize the feelings in his heart. he also commits to never taking these words back. his feelings for gina are eternal and everlasting. this is important for gina to hear because words have always been unreliable to her. people that she cares about, whether her mom or jamie or even e.j., have made verbal commitments to her at one point or another, and each one of them has later reneged on that commitment, whether intentionally or not. ricky can say these words, can say "I love you" to gina, because he's been saying it through his actions the entire show. gina doesn't always trust words, but she trusts actions. ricky has more than proven his love for her, and it's this continued declaration through his works that allows these words to ring true for her.

'Cause I love you feels a lot like high school and forever after that

I made this observation a couple weeks ago but this line is so fascinating. when the season first dropped and I heard the line, I was a tad confused. what does it mean for love to feel like high school? I was listening to the hsm3 soundtrack when it all clicked for me. in high school musical, the final song they sing in hsm3, the last line is "I want the rest of my life to feel just like a / High school musical" with this line, ricky is basically saying that he will love gina for the rest of his life. throwing in a hsm reference is also incredibly fitting given that they've just completed the first night of their run as troyella, further cementing their legacy as the troyella of the show. i love that, even when the bridge is repeated, ricky and gina are the only ones to sing these lines. when the bridge is sung for the third and final time, ricky and gina are now together on stage singing the words "I"m in love, I'm in love, I'm in love" to each other in between the lines of the bridge. the song closes with ricky singing "I love you feels a lot like high school" with gina singing "and forever after that." I love this ending for two reasons: ending the song with rina singing together re-emphasizes that they're in love, and in love together (for the first time), as tim mentions in an interview. I also love it because even as the wildcats join to sing the bridge near the end of the song, ricky and gina are the only people to sing the lines "I'm in love x3" and "I love you feels a lot like high school." even though their friends step in to sing some lines, ultimately, the song is a love song for gina, about gina, and that's why it ends with her. as tim (love how much I'm referencing him) mentioned in an interview, rina is the beating heart of the romance of the show, and their friends coming in to sing along to ricky's love song for gina fully solidifies this.

EJ’s wasted potential

I feel so sad when I think about how poorly EJ has been treated by the writers. I remember after s1 ended I was so excited about his story. I really thought they were gonna dive deeper into his home life, his fear of not being enough, his insecurities and give him the anxiety storyline (there were little hints in s1, also his first character description said that he was secretly prone to anxiety attacks). Also, I wished he had a bff who was one of the wildcats (and is not his cousin).

Instead of doing what I was expecting, the writers used him again as a plot device for Ricky's romance… Portwell should've never happened if R*na was planned since Homecoming… I get that they paralleled the batb story in s2, but they could have had only Kourtney and Howie to do that (and let Gina recover in 2b after how much she was hurt by Ricky, without throwing her to another love interest). In s3 they could have easily introduced a new character for Gina's love interest who parallels Hans. It was so easy to keep EJ out of the love triangle plot (which was a redo of the s1 triangle) and let him deal with his own problems… They should have given him a love interest that is a new character, without his romance being the main focus of his story (as much as I love Portwell, I hate that he got more focus only when he started to have feelings for Gina)… His storyline with his father was extremely rushed. They treated the Duke storyline as a joke in most s2a (I liked ep 4 and that one got me really excited about his story, and then it was handled so poorly). They treat EJ as a joke in general. They revealed his name in the worst way possible. They casted him as Sven and put him in THAT costume just to humiliate him for no reason... He has no serious solo, NONE. And we saw that Matt can sing very well if he is given the right song. Also, the lack of EJ POV during most of the show is so frustrating. I've never seen writers wasting such great potential for a character…

He would’ve definitely been a fan favourite character if the writers had done what I was expecting...

I wanted to do more tasks so here goes, btw I have named the little robot crow guy from earlier Update, I'm keeping them, and they're gonna be the character I use for interacting with A1 and maybe sometimes you guys. I thought of some fun character and story details about them, they're a robotic crow brought to life who is sort of an outlet of whatever canon group chat we have to talk to each other. Update automatically downloads every message sent and repeats it.

Update is not necessarily "me," just an OC I wanted to make for this project because I don't really like writing directly about myself, but I wanted to practice some light sweet writing since I haven't done that in a bit.

(Writing and lyrics below, this song had been stuck in my head all day yesterday so this was wonderful timing)

Sing to the baby a lullaby in another language.

This wouldn't be hard for Update, if they wanted to make it quick. Two days ago, they had been sent songs all day, in many different languages. All they would have to do is simply upload one, play it again, and that task would be done.

But looking at the little egg watching them curiously, Update didn't want to make it that simple. Aine had never heard music before meeting their new family, and by now they already heard every song that Update had downloaded.

Besides, Update had a new song in mind.

"Lullaby?" Update confirmed, waiting for Afon to settle down and nod to show they were ready.

After a second, Update closed their eyes and began in their own voice - electronic, but as gentle as they could make it.

"Vem kan segla förutan vind?

Vem kan ro utan åror?

Vem kan skiljas från vännen sin

utan att fälla tårar?"

Update opened one eye for a moment to see Aimée's reaction. The little egg was leaning forward slightly. They didn't place a sign - Update often spoke for themselves more through silent actions than words so Icarus often did the same for them - but Update could tell they were listening.

Update smiled and closed their eyes again to finish.

"Jag kan segla förutan vind.

Jag kan ro utan åror.

Men ej skiljas från vännen min

utan att fälla tårar."

Update opened their eyes to wrap one wing around Aili, who was looking at the ground. "You are so strong. You can do everything you ever will dream of. But you always need love too."

Update rested their beak on Anahí's head as the egg leaned into their plated wing. "So many people love you. You will always be loved."

Yes I used at least 6 different names, I choose no single name I choose all of them :) Update hears from all of you who offered names from so many different cultures, how could they just choose one for our child?

Just when I thought they couldn't do EJ more dirty, I was proven wrong… They really made him look like an "I peaked in high school" character… Was it that hard to show him happy and hopeful? He looked so depressed and stuck in the past. He'll probably be in the last few eps but until then, offscreen, they couldn't have had him figure out his future, so onscreen, we could see him being excited about it? The only good thing I see coming out of this is if he sings Scream bc he seems to still relate to the song. If I were to bet, maybe it would be a duet with Ricky bc in that scene where he talks, he is with Ricky and they both relate to not having a plan for the future. Idk, I won't get my hopes up for that tho… The writers made it pretty clear that they didn't care about EJ…

You're so right about that. He's probably not going to be in most of the season and when he does show up it'll be to give somw advice to ricky or something, about high school being the greatest thing that happened to him. I'm so sad/mad because if EJ is anything, he's a "my life got 100 times better after high school" character, not a "i peaked in high school" kind of character.

I think at this point his purpose was served. He was made to be Nini's bf, and after that Gina' bf, so when he's no longer that, the writers don't know what to do with him. Which is sad because obviously he's much more than that, but from what I've seen it doesn't look like they can appreciate that.

I'm not gonna get my hope up with Scream, they'll most likely give it to ricky.

Gina is just trying to get out of there but coach Bolton is distracting her - and then he says “technically Disney won’t let me spoil the movie but …” and then proceeds to spoil the whole movie! What!

They influenced each other so strongly without even realizing it. This is why they work. Ricky has a vibe, and Gina has an instinct.

summary: the one where ej and andy reunite after years when they're cast as love interests, finally rekindling their friendship and maybe getting something else out of it as well

Ashlyn and Andy sat in the back of the theatre, getting ready for their auditions.

"People! Make sure your audition numbers are clearly visible on your clothes," Carlos yelled out

Most years, the two girls would be cast for low roles, roles that didn't require much work but this year, they were both going to get a role and they were sure of it.

Outside of school, Ashlyn and Andy were really good friends, having bonded over their mutual love for musical theater. But inside of school, they didn't talk often as Andy hang out with Ricky and Big Red who were more of the skater type.

"They aren't that bad, you can actually move," Ashlyn said as she saw Andy sitting at an uncomfortable angle.

"No Ashlyn, I need to look in this direction or I'll throw up over the grossest couple in the world," she said as she sat down, trying to ignore EJ and Nini.

Ashlyn knew about Andys small crush on her cousin. Ashlyn also knew about how during most of Junior High, EJ had the biggest crush on Andy.

"I'm so nervous," she muttered, holding her head in her hands.

Ashlyn looked at her friend. She knew how badly she wanted a role and so did she, "We're both good actors, singers,"

She chuckled, looking up, "You're trying to feed my ego," she said, standing up from her seat on the table.

"We are going to get the roles, probably, hopefully," Ashlyn said.

They did their makeup, staring into the mirrors before they turned to look at Miss Jenn as she walked through the door.

"Okay theater people, lets do this," she said and everyone cheered.

After the dance, they stood in a line, Andy unfortunately next to EJ and she was too close. Too close because she could smell his cologne and it was putting her off.

Miss Jenn started to hand out audition sheets and she passed one for Miss Darbus to Ashlyn before approaching Andy.

"You are giving me major Kelsi vibes, can you play the piano?" Miss Jenn asked as she looked at Andy.

"Yeah. Yeah, I can," she said and Miss Jenn smiled before Carlos handed her the audition sheet.

Miss Jenn claimed EJ as a total Troy before handing him the sheet and Nini a Gabriella sheet.

After Andy's audition, she sat in the crowd, watching as EJ performed his Troy song, Miss Jenn clapping. He was amazing. He always had been and it made her nervous. It always had.

He went and sat down next to Andy, smiling at her, "You did really well, you could do better than Kelsi, maybe a Taylor or even a Gabriella," he said.

She looked at him, a little confused at his current conversation with her. She could feel the blush starting to rise up her cheeks at the interaction.

"Really, but I thought your girlfriend was gonna play Gabriella," she said and he chuckled, obviously not hearing the bitterness in her voice.

"She's gonna be great," EJ stated. Andy ignored him, watching Gina's performance before Nini stepped up, ready to sing.

At least, that was until Ricky ran in screaming, "Am I too late?" Everyone turned to look at him.

"We're all set on Troys. We're low on Chad's," Miss Jenn said, "You can read after the Gabriellas,"

"I only studied the Troy scenes in the movie," Ricky explained, EJ rolling his eyes at the response.

She had not expected him to actually turn up. He had told her that he was going to audition for the musical but she didn't believe he would really do it.

"Troy would have arrived on time," Carlos said and Andy looked back at her best friend, wondering why he suddenly wanted to do this.

Andy furrowed her brows in confusion, wasn't Troy Bolton always late? The comment from Carlos didn't make sense.

"Okay Nini, lets try again," Miss Jenn said before she accidentally poured coffee over the sound system, the lights going out.

Nini was frozen on stage before she started singing, looking down at the floor. Andy watched as Ricky pulled his phone out, lighting her up so they could see her.

EJ huffed, standing up and doing the same thing. Nini finished her song just as the lights came on, everyone applauding her.

She could see that EJ felt like he was being overshadowed by Ricky and could see his insecurities written on his face.

That was something that she had always been able to see in him, those emotions on his face that nobody else seemed to notice.

"You, late boy, let's do the Chad side," Miss Jenn said after she thanked Nini, Ricky getting up on stage with his guitar.

"Don't say anything," Ashlyn whispered to Andy as she saw Nini cuddled up to EJ.

Andy closed her mouth after she was about to make a sarcastic comment, "You know me too well,"

Andy and Ashlyn had been friends for a while but they mainly met through Theater, even if she wasn't fiends with EJ anymore.

"I'm Ricky Bowen, I'm a junior and uh...here it goes," he said before doing a really bad acting job.

Andy felt bad for him as she watched him crumple the script up in his hand, going off script, talking directly to Nini. She stared at Big Red as he stood in the wings, both of them confused.

"Okay kiddo, time to sing," Miss Jenn said, confused at what was going on.

"Um, actually, can I sing something I prepared for myself?" He asked, hand brushing the back of his neck, nervous.

Miss Jenn hummed in response, "I guess so," she shook her head, "Go ahead,"

He grabbed his guitar from Big Red in the wings before starting to play, singing the song that Nini wrote to him to say that she loved him.

Andy cringed when she heard it. She remembered seeing it on her Instagram account when it first came out.

EJ looked up at him confused, watching Ninis look of disbelief. Miss Jenn smiled to herself at Rickys antics, knowing that he was the perfect Troy.

They all applauded before everyone left for Miss Jenn and Carlos to decide who was going to be on the cast list.

She was nervous as she walked out of the theatre hall with Ricky and Big Red, still confused at why he decided to try out for the musical.

"That happened," Ricky said, sighing to himself as the three walked into the hallway.

"I thought it was good," Andy said, Big Red nodding his head in agreement.

"Hey," Nini yelled out, chasing after them, "What are you doing here?"

"I'm auditioning," he said, gesturing to his guitar before looking at Nini.

Andy turned to Big Red, grabbing him and pulling the two into the hallway so the ex-couple could have their moment.

She didn't want to hear then arguing right now, not when she was so stressed out anyway about it all.

"Carlos is posting the cast list!" Kourtney yelled out and Andy rushed over, trying to peer over people to look at it.

She gasped, staring at it with disbelief before rushing to Ashlyn, "You're Taylor!" She said and Andy smiled at her still in shock.

"And you're Miss Darbus!" She exclaimed, the two girls pulling each other into a hug.

"Congrats," Gina said to Nini, the latter had gotten Gabriella whilst Gina was stuck being Kelsi.

"Chad! She thinks I'm a Chad?" EJ asked, his voice breaking slightly as he realised who had been cast as Troy. Ricky.

Casting Frozen for EJ & Val

i was just on youtube and i saw a sneak peak for the next hsmtmts episode and i thought i would take it upon myself to do val & ej a favor and cast the show for them. you’re welcome. it is currently 12:34 AM. i will come back after watching the auditions episode to reevaluate my guesses and then again after the cast list is posted to see what i got right.

Elsa: Kourtney

There’s literally no need for me to explain this it’s so fucking obvious I will die on this hill. Kourtney is a powerhouse and Elsa is a powerhouse role so come on!

Anna: Gina

Once again dying on this hill too. Come on! Use your brain! It’s literally her season!!!

Hans: Jet or Ricky

I say Jet purely because of his broody bad boy attitude and Hans being one of the villians of Frozen. I also said Ricky because of the clip in the trailer where he dips Gina cause why else would they be dancing together if not to practice for “Love Is An Open Door”?? But if Jet doesn’t audition I legitimately don’t know who would get this role cause I said Ricky is gonna be Kristoff and he can’t play both roles.

Olaf: Carlos

I think this cause of when he played Lumiere for Beauty and the Beast in my brain the roles are kind of interchangeable. Idk why but it feels right in my gut tho.

Kristoff: Ricky

I mean what other option do we have??

Duke of Weselton: Jet?

This could be Jet if Jet doesn’t sing and somehow gets roped into doing the show. But I feel like this is a stretch.

Oaken: Maddox

So in episode 1 Maddox sings Shallow Lake which kind of has the same vibe as “Hygge”, the song Oaken sings in the musical so that’s where I get this from.

Bulda: Ashlyn

I would die on this hill cause this just makes sense. I mean think about it Ashlyn singing Fixer Upper to Gina makes sense cause Ashlyn is the one who is always giving Gina boy advice and the person Gina goes to for boy advice. It would be so cute!!

Young Elsa: Alex

This comes from the new cast member Aria Brooks literally looking like a mini Kourtney in the trailer. So... and it works with having Kourtney be Elsa so.

Young Anna: Emmy

Also coming from the new cast member Liamani Segura looking like a literal mini Gina in the trailer. I really want Gina to play Anna please!!!!!!!!!

i actually just realized something today: ngl i was starting to lose hope with all the rina foreshadowing but then i thought if rina was gonna be endgame and portwell were to break up wouldn’t gina and e.j. have their duet earlier in the season? i mean ig it’s possible that it could be a breakup song but given the possible covers and the way hsm 2&3 and camp rock 2 turned out for the main couples i’m not totally hopeless yet when it comes to portwell🤞

ok but what if the portwell duet is “go my own way” from hsm2. im scared (from an anon)

These two asks are addressing the same thing, so I'm putting them together. I'm a little confused about what the placement of Portwell's duet in S3 would have to do with the Gina/Ricky foreshadowing, but I'm glad you still have hope! Lol. In all honesty, I really don't care what song EJ and Gina sing, as long as Matt and Sofia finally get their long awaited duet. All the other ships got their musical moment:

Rini- they BEEN having songs in b/ seasons

Rina- when there was me and you

Redlyn- red means love

Seblos- the climb / in a heartbeat

Kowie- if i can't love her

Ejini- what I've been looking for

I believe Matt and Jason described Portwell's duet this season as 'adorable' and 'fun' in previous interviews, so it's definitely not "gotta go my own way" Lol. Given a line in 3.03, I'm fairly certain PW will sing "love is an open door," which, when taken out of context, is an objectively adorable/fun song. Of course, as you watch the musical progress, we learn that Hans is being deceptive when he sings that song to Anna. But EJ is not playing Hans in the musical, nor is he the Hans-like figure in Gina's life. When you take the lyrics out of the context of Frozen, I would make the argument that it fits PW quite well. I've seen some people upset about Gina and EJ possibly singing this song as their duet, but again, I feel like Corbin will probably throw EJ into it because Jet is missing rehearsals, and they need to film something. I can totally picture EJ and Gina having a realization as they're singing the lyrics because it does fit their story quite well (and I mean the story that the show has been telling with them. Not in the context of the musical). It honestly just sounds like more foreshadowing of Portwell falling in love someday (which the show already did via song, twice- "if I can't love her" and "something there"). Besides, regardless of what they sing, I cannot wait to hear Matt and Sofia finally get their own duet. "Second Chances" gave us a taste of that, so I can't wait to have a song that's just them.

I know I haven't talked about HSMTMTS lately, but since the season ended today, I decided to share my thoughts as i watched it. Enjoy my sporadic thoughts.

Season 3 Episode 3 Thoughts

First of all… do I have any???? Its giving no thoughts, head empty

Before we get to Rina🥹, I’ll give some of my other thoughts

Ok I was sus about Ashlyn’s rose in the last episode and I made some thoughts about it in a post. I had a feeling this had something to do with her recognizing her “beauty from within” as the rose song said and I was right! I’m like really proud of this for some reason 😂

Kourtney and Carlos had me CACKLING. The whole scene about the thing in the woods being homophobic and Kourtney being like “I’m too hot for this”. Just comedy GOLD

I still feel like my “outside casting” is right where Jet and Ricky give off Kristoff and Sven energy and this episode proved it more. But it’s interesting because we also had the layers of Kristoff and Anna as Ricky and Gina with Ashlyn being Elsa going off to “find herself”. But Maddox and Jet were also showing a very Anna and Elsa dynamic. Just layers and layers and layers. I love looking for all the frozen hints/references in the character development SO MUCH

Also I know Ashlyn can care a lot but I really did not expect one comment about her rising sign to throw her into this whole self discovery/major upset storyline. It felt a ~little~ out of place, but I do like how they concluded it (that she was misplacing her anger)

I know Maddox got hurt but I did like seeing Jet come out of his shell and joke around. That was nice :)

EJ’s song… while different… was sang really well by him. But also like we got this and a million sorrys??? I would love ONE serious song by him because he’s got such a nice voice. This show does him and Carlos (Lumiere/Olaf comment) SO DIRTY 😂😂

Carlos and Kourtney’s tent is EVERYTHING to me. It was literally for one night and they put up decorations, hung lights, made it real cozy. Obsessed

And now… my faves 🥹🥹🥹 (there might be a lot of yelling over the next few bullet points you’ve been warned)

THIS WAS THE CUTEST DAMN EPISODE ARE YOU KIDDING ME

WE FEASTED. WE WERE FED. RINAS ATE WELL TONIGHT AFTER CRUMBS BEYOND CRUMBS

Not me STILL looking for crumbs around all of the amazing scenes tonight though 😂

The scene where they are talking to Ashlyn?? They share a “look”. And part of it is sus because of what she said about learning something new and they’re new. The other part is sweet because it was a very, VERY understanding look. They saw their friend sad and shared a look that she needed to talk some more. No words were needed. They just UNDERSTOOD?? That’s soul mateism. I’m just gonna say it: It literally felt like two parents comforting their child and that was REALLY tender to me

Also gina said “love is an open door” and who TF said that SAME LINE?? Oh I don’t know?? Ricky?? Episode one in the intro?? Are you kidding me with the parallels??

And like the stark difference between Gina trying to get through and talk to EJ and he barely listened. He just got in his head and pushed her away (Hans) to Ricky and Gina talking and just GETTING each other. Their sweet conversations, Ricky saying how proud he was of her, them taking their time to hear Ashlyn out… the way they ALWAYS communicate? (Kristoff and Anna) I’m just saying the differences are palpable.

Also, sorry not sorry, no other ship got this much screen time together. Any of them. Literally. Adding up all of the seasons and screen time. Ricky and Nini MIGHT be up there but I think Rina is getting them beat. It is so obvious who our endgame is!!

And like I DEFINITELY want Rina dating scenes and storylines AND I LOVE the build up of them. It reminds me so much of the office (which Tim definitely got inspo from in this show) and how we saw the entire build up of Jim and Pam AND their life after they got together. We got everything. I would love to see that with Rina.

And like the way they flirted?? The stolen glances???? The AMOUNT OF TIMES THEY TOUCHED LIKE THE HELL THEY WERE ALL OVER EACH OTHER

There is a scene right before they go into the barn with Ashlyn where Gina asks if they should see who is singing and Ricky says, “I mean we’ve come this far right?” And then he looks at her and she returns the look and they just stare at each other and you CANNOT TELL ME that line wasn’t symbolic of their relationship. They’ve come this far?? They’re scared but they should keep going?? It’s not as scary when they reach the end??? YEAH. YUP. YEAH.

Also I need to dissect the song Ashlyn is singing and how it parallels rina. There was a LOT of conversation and scene cuts back to them in between the song. To me that is purposeful. That is the writers saying, “hey look! This song symbolizes Ashlyn AND this other couples journey we keep flashing back to”. I’m just a wee bit tired to dissect it now but I think there is a lot of connection between rina and the song

Also jealous EJ when Carlos says they went missing?? EJ would not literally leave this thing that has been stressing him out all night, that he kept blowing off literally EVERYTHING including his girlfriend for, if he didn’t feel threatened by them being gone. You see it in his face! He KNOWS they’re friends. The tough part is that Ricky has been trying to create a closer relationship with EJ after all of the Nini stuff and I worry that this is gonna send EJ. I’m a little scared there might be a fight or revenge of some sort 😳😬 it makes for excellent show writing though lol I’m HOOKED

lastly, every time I thought we wouldn’t get a rina scene, we got another. And another. And another. They just KEPT COMING. This was by far one of my favorite episodes. I will absolutely be screaming about this over the next week so don’t mind me

Ok rinas I love you all and I hope you enjoy another one of my episode rambles! I’m off to bed now ❤️

Who do you think should sing “Scream” from HSM3 EJ or Ricky and why? I know EJ already graduate high school and he won’t be in the musical but it is still possible he could be the one that sings the song.

I gotta think about this one a minute. This is probably gonna be a bit....

From the standpoint of the series thus far, Ricky makes the most sense. He has played Troy already, he's done Troy's songs, he's been the lead, he's had how many big numbers...we know that Joshua Bassett can handle singing it. I can totally picture it.

From the emotional standpoint of the song, it better suits EJ. We know how much conflict EJ has. We know how much he's been struggling. We know how much pressure there is on him. On a surface level, it's not too different from Troy. And, likewise, we know Matt Cornett could sing the song just as well.

Scream is all about inner conflict. It was a massive number in HSM3. We couldn't just hear the confusion and struggle in Troy's voice. We could see it. His movements, his angst, even the scenery and the camera angles. Troy was stuck once again between the person he was expected to be and the person he wanted to be. Even though everyone accepted him as a 'musical singer person', they still figured he was going to pursue basketball. Because before he was even a musical singer person, he was the basketball guy. Music was so obviously just a side thing, right? But Troy was starting to learn something about himself. He enjoyed music. He enjoyed performing. With Gabriella, a whole new world was opened up to him. He was starting to think that maybe music could be part of his future. Maybe that's what he was meant to do. But the thing was, he still enjoyed basketball. He still wanted it in his life. But surely he couldn't have both. (Never mind that he was also struggling with Gabriella being so far away at Stanford, that's a whole other layer. But for the purposes of the song specifically, i'm focusing on the inner turmoil between the I Want and the I Should.)

Now at this specific point in time, with the end of the third season, i don't think Ricky or EJ have the exact same connection to the song that warrants one of them singing it over the other. But we know how much can change over the course of a season so anything can lead any of them to Scream (both singing Scream and literally screaming).

While we did see Ricky struggling with whether or not he should tell Gina how he felt about her during Season 3, as of the end of the season that already reached its conclusion. Does Ricky have anything else in him that could lead to Scream? To him needing that moment? While he does have conflict (as every character does), i don't think there's one specific thing sticking out that climaxes to a Scream moment. His dad's continuing relationship with Miss Jenn (i love her) and how he really feels about that; pressure to do this relationship with Gina right because he knows he not only screwed up with her before but he also made mistakes with Nini so he wants to get this right (no Frozen pun intended, it just magically happened); if he does play Troy again, can he do that right, as in can he do better than the first musical; what does his future look like, or, one step further, does he know what he's doing with his future. While those are all legitimate concerns and thoughts, again, i think how everything is handled, how the story goes, and how the season plays out determines if any of those or something yet to be seen/that i haven't mentioned determines wanting or expecting Scream from him.

Contradictory, EJ has had some of the biggest struggles of any character. And all throughout the course of one season. There is a lot that can bring him to Scream. To needing to Scream. There's the aftermath of the documentary getting released; how's that going to affect him; how does, if at all, it affect his relationship further with his dad; what does this mean for his future; how does EJ as a person deal with everything, both mentally and emotionally. There's the relationship between him and his dad that already exists; we know how much Cash expects of EJ; we saw how strained their relationship was in Season 3; we know that, even though his dad says one thing he goes back on it (yes you can take a gap year no wait actually i don't approve of that after all, you're going to a fancy pants school so you can be a real man (an exaggeration but you get what i mean)). EJ did graduate, but he's not going to college right away...so what happens now? And, if his primary support system was Val, who does he have to lean on now? What does he specifically have to look forward to?

From specifically the emotional standpoint, that ferocity and angst and drama behind the song itself? At this moment, i lean slightly more towards EJ singing Scream. It feels like there's more of a buildup to that from him compared to Ricky. As we've seen with the past few seasons, a person doesn't need to be in the musical or play a certain character to get their song. There are other ways of doing that and, for the most part, they've all been done well. So with that in mind, i agree that there's a chance it could end up being EJ. And, especially with the range of emotions he's had throughout Season 3, i'm excited to see how EJ would handle it.

From specifically the wanting aspect? Who i'd want to sing Scream? I lean more towards expecting Ricky to sing it. Whether i want that or not? I think it seems like i know who i want, but that doesn't mean that's who i do want or that i'm going to stick with that. For me, it's mostly gonna come down to the story. But at the end of the day, i'm just going to get excited when someone starts singing the song.... Or any song from the movie, to be honest 😆

Am i looking too much into this? Probably. For all i know, i'm trying to read so much in between the lines and over think it that i'm missing the obvious answer right in front of my face. What i do know is, from a musical and acting standpoint, while Joshua and Matt are no Zac Efron, both of them have enough ability to do the song justice. The trick is going to make us believe them the way that we believed Troy without trying to be Troy.

Or, you know, if they really wanted to throw us for a loop they could just have both Ricky and EJ singing the song and turning it into a duet where we see both of them struggling before they ultimately come together. But there's no way in hell that's gonna happen 🤣

HSMTMTS Season 3 Trailer Thoughts

The beginning's actually kinda funny (something wildcats!).

Why is the right part of the scene blurred at 16 seconds..? It's pretty obvious if you pause there.

Is it just me or is Kourtney taking a selfie at a random moment kind of like Season 1 Carlos?

It annoys me that they spent 14 seconds in the trailer on the announcing Corbin and the putting on Frozen part (mainly because it was already in the sneak peek) but I know, some FaNs didn't know about it sooo

So Gina's wearing all gold while dancing on stage. I think that she's gonna have her Season 1 Nini moment where she's auditioning and then is suddenly transported to some dream stage and wearing something different (they did this in 1-2-3 in season 2 as well).

I can't see Olivia Rodrigo or Nini with a gigantic sunhat and holding a white lace umbrella but here we are

And Ricky is now standing on a log looking out to the city. I was thinking it's probably some Troy song, like Scream perhaps...? Although to be realistic, maybe EJ should sing Scream because of his whole college decision (which strangely wasn't even brought up in the trailer).

So now Gina's talking about how this is her first time doing a bunch of stuff. I think that maybe she's about to sing For the First Time in Forever because.... I mean it would make sense.

Carlos looks ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED talking about how Portwell will be a thing all summer...

Gina girl it is not your first time going all out for the lead in the show. You did that with HSM, you just didn't actually get the lead... unless Gina's talking about going all out AS the lead of the show?

They show a color wars song for a bit. Meg/Val has a mic so I'm sure she'll be singing quite a bit in that song. I'm lowkey not interested at all in a color wars thing, but oh well. Maybe it'll be interesting. Oh and later in the trailer it shows Jet (on the yellow team) being held up by his teammates so I guess we already know that the yellow team wins

Val announcing EJ as the director is making me ship Casval even harder (yes I am calling them Casval lol)

I swear I will make a slideshow of all the times the girls in Season 3 are wearing shirts with puffy sleeves.

So I've heard that EJ saying he's freaking out could be because of him directing a musical for the first time.... or it could be about Rina developing again?

I know some people are shocked that he doesn't even know the main characters of Frozen but then I remembered I've had a friend who NEVER watched Disney so perhaps some people are just not as connected with the Disney movies world O_O

Ashlyn's hair color going from orange streaks to blue streaks lol. I always think her hair looks so good though so I'm not going to question how she changed it halfway through a summer camp.

For anyone who thinks that's not Maddox and Madison, the next shot shows Madison with the same exact hairstyle and Maddox wearing the sunglasses on top of her head. Just sayin'

NINI NOTHING FROM THE PAST FEW YEARS HAS- okay she has only really thought about becoming a singer/songwriter for one semester. Literally. Before that, she was content with just being in musicals.

Also Miss Jenn looks very different (her hair is just getting shorter each season lol)

EJ if you say nothing's gonna ruin your summer with your girlfriend you're basically ASKING for it to be ruined.

So Ricky was clearly writing a song, and then did that HSM 3 thing (if anyone remembers) where he purposely was showing her the paper but not letting her have it.

It lowkey makes sense for Rina to develop anyways. EJ is too busy being a camp director. Gina's the lead. Ricky MIGHT get Kristoff.

I swear if I have to hear Corbin say "Wha-what?" again I'm going to scream.

EJ is probably giving the thumbs up to Gina's audition. Adding onto that, WHATEVER happens with what Gina gets, it's gonna cause chaos. If she gets the lead, people will say "Oh that's unfair because you're dating our director." On the other hand, maybe EJ won't give her the lead BECAUSE people would think that way.

The stakes have never been higher...? I'm confused last time I checked it's a Frozen musical that is put on by a two-week summer camp. It's really not that big...

But yes I will also be obsessing over every episode so maybe it is a big thing.

thoughts on the hsmtmts s3 finale

I wish I was in that writer's room babe.

I'm going to go in order throughout the episode, but this post is just a stream of stuff I was critical of. I'm sure I could make a whole separate post about the stuff I enjoyed. Also because my biases might show lmao, I am a portwell girly and an EJ defender. But for the record, I did ship Rina in s1.

Why did Val mention Maddox giving out nicknames, but then we just didn't see it?? I would've liked a scene where everyone gets their names OR if time didn't allow for that, having them sign the wall at the end with their name & nickname.

Gina should've wished Ricky happy birthday. This is a dumb detail, but her saying it after he walked away felt awkward to me lmao.

Emmy is adorable and very talented. But why did she sing This is Me??? Like this is a new character with barely any screen time, so I really don't care about her enough to enjoy this performance. In my version This is Me would've gone to Ashlyn and EJ. Ashlyn's part would be for her to work through coming out to Big Red. EJ's part would be showing more of his struggle with his dad and not knowing where he stands after this summer. Everyone singing on it would still be great, but that would be the plot thread for the song.

Honorable mention for Miss Jen telling Nini "Stay or go, you're always a wildcat." Because it was very sweet. <3

Another honorable mention for Kourtney's Let it Go performance. Dara is SO SO talented!!! And seeing how they did the visual effects for a stage production was cool.

I'm so happy we saw Nini and Kourtney interact, but I would've loved to see Nini with everyone. I know Olivia was probably in and out of that set so quick lol, but even just her waving at them during the final bow and everyone waving back would've been nice.

At the very least, when Miss Jen goes to the fire to look for Nina. I would've loved if it cut to Nina backstage dropping Ricky's envelope on his vanity and then he looks back just as she does. They make eye contact. She waves. He smiles and waves back. She turns her back and walks to her car. Just to give a more concrete Rini send off.

EJ looking at Gina during Ricky's song, yeah, that killed me. I hate love triangles lemme just put that out there. I could write a whole post about how differently s3 Portwell plot should've gone. But I will just say I would've LOVED for the framing of this scene to be Gina standing next to EJ, EJ noticing Gina enthralled by Ricky, and him almost accepting it? Maybe he says "he's great" she's just looking at Ricky so she softly says "yeah" but then snaps back and sees EJ's face. He just smiles and says "it's okay." Because at the end of it all, after everything EJ went through, he just wants the people he loves to be happy, especially Gina. Gina looks back at Ricky and that's when he looks at her and finishes the song.

Then of course cut to EJ calling his dad, aka my heart breaking all over again. BUT if I wrote this, EJ's dad wouldn't have hung up. Or maybe he would, but only because Cash Caswell would be knocking on that cabin door to tell EJ he was proud of him. "I thought I should say this in person. I'm proud of you, EJ, of course I am." And EJ cries and hugs his dad. EJ deserved that. He deserved to have all the shit he went through actually be worth something.

Third honorable mention for Everyday, I love that song so much and am so glad we got to hear it. Especially with the icon Corbin Bleu himself singing on it.

When Big Red said he was bi, Ricky should've said "same" Caswen anyone? yes pls

NO BUT THE REAL KICKER, WHY WAS RICKY SAYING HE LIKED GINA NOT IN THE TRAILER??? Like why show that being filmed to not even use that footage. Especially considering Ricky snapped at Channing, you think that man wasn't gonna expose him?? And let's say the footage comes up in s4, will it even matter if Rina are already together? Ricky's confession should've been in the trailer and that's what triggers their conversation. It could still be Gina being the vocal one, but at least that clip would've pushed her to confess. I understand wanting to be honest and tell people where you stand, but after last time, wouldn't Gina need more reassurance to tell Ricky how she felt? The clip of Ricky talking to Carlos could've been that trigger.

Don't get me wrong, the Rina scene was VERY cute. Great first kiss. Great chemistry. Beautifully shot. But...it could've been better imo. But ship stans scare me, so I won't say much more on that.

Okay, so that's everything and this is incredibly (and embarrassingly) long. I will be surprised if anyone reads the whole thing, but if you do, thank you so much and let's discuss if anyone is down. I have many thoughts (clearly lmao).
