There’s so much I liked about the HSMTMTS finale, but ending the show with the cast just going to Denny’s after opening night was such a perfect ending.

my hsmtmts hot takes:

(im going to be stoned for this i know it)

i did not care about rina in the slightest until season 4

seblos (as a ship/couple) is just sort of...there for me. i have no big feelings towards or against them. they're definitely cute, they just don't stay on my mind

though i loved the fashion upgrade that came with it, i hated the way kourtney was written in season 4

i don't care about madlyn that much. (i also don't like call it what you want all that much)

season 4's hsm3 songs were not done well (save for can i have this dance, high school musical (the finale) and dani's high school musical, and now or never (auditions) the mixing was bad, they had dara sing too high for i want it all and the singing itself just wasn't that good

^i loved most of the original songs tho

they should've never brought in any of the original hsm actors (save for kaycee and lucas in s1) they made a corbin a twisted version of himself in s3 and the rest of the actors in s4 were so overhyped just for them to barely be there

i actually liked portwell together. they both seemed so happy and i will never forgive the writers for building them up just to ruin them in s3

^speaking of s3 portwell, i will also never forgive this fandom for treating ej like he was some old man preying on a child and treating him like the villain (this is a rant by itself so we'll tackle that some other time)

i've never liked nini (or rini)

the rina hat only works because they got together in the end. imagine if a friend put a secret love confession in a gift for you and you find it after both of you get with someone else. i just find it weird to do that sort of thing when you don't even know if there's mutual feelings

i was on ricky's side during most of the rini discourse (save for him going behind nini's back and getting her a part when she didn't want one)

while i love both jennzzara and jetney, both of them were quickly thrown together at the end with hints that there were crushes in the air for both of them

i will forever hate that they chose frozen as s3's musical. the only songs i liked were what do you know about love and love is an open door

for a show about students putting on a musical, they really just did not show a lot of the musicals

^for s2, i've been giving them a pass because it was during the first year of covid so they were probably limiting how long people could be dancing around without masks (but i was still robbed of belle's yellow dress on ashlyn and ej and biggie playing gaston and lefou)

and finally, this show pairs people up so fast with no real development for either the people or the couple itself. the show really could've benefited from growing their characters without a relationship being the driving force and then worked on building romantic relationships once they figured out what to do with each character

After a couple months of therapy, Maddox seems to catch a terrible case of overshare. Just lets all her thoughts stumble out of her.....and she fucking hates it. She is so beyond frustrated with her own stupid self and her stupid emotions.

do you think hsmtmts has the possibility of a college spin off? they left a lot of things inconclusive and said a lot of things that might sound like a promise for a college chapter such as referring to emmy was a “new generation” and a line about something high school and new adventures… maybe i am delusional because i miss them.

This is also an old ask that I am just answering to.

A part of me feels like the show needed one last season. Some plots needed a proper close off. I wanted to see Kourtney and Ricky’s graduation. I wanted to see them at senior prom. I would’ve liked a lot more of Ricky contemplating what he wants to do and find a passion or career to pursue and work towards (music producer). I wanted Gina’s relationship with her mom to heal and understand her family better. I wanted to see Kourtney and Jet together. I wanted to see Ashlyn and Maddox together. And while I enjoyed a lovely season of Ricky and Gina in a relationship I do wanted to see Ricky openly being Gina’s boyfriend and see how his relationship with Terri turns out to be. I wanted to see Gina in Ricky’s house bonding with Mike.

But I am also glad that the show ended in his own terms because with the way studios are right now we don’t know what shows they’ll be cancelling to cut on costs. I like that we had an ending instead of a super inconclusive season.

There’s a part of me that thinks there’s room for a spin off because a lot of potential ideas were laid on the table such as Kourtney at Lewis and Emmy/Dani as a “new generation.” I do think Tim felt a little limited by the show, there’s only so much he can do under the IP of High School Music and I think he wanted to explore other musicals outside of the franchise. I think if he ever decides to do a spin off it will be under Hulu, but instead of a spin off, I see a movie as a better option because it might resolve some of the unfinished plots and it doesn’t take that much time commitment from the cast because I assume they’d want to expand their career.

I have one theory (if you can call it that?) About Maddox and Ashlyn ..

. .

So you remember the time ashlyn gave the carved tree trunk to maddox..?

I was confused and probably thinking.. "Why did she give that to her?? I mean, it's a sweet gesture but still..why..?? "

And then I was rewatching the show and realised something..

In season 4, the scene where Big Red and Ashlyn break up, Big Red says something like, "Bringing you flower on opening night last summer was one of the best decisions" And then proceeds to convince her to talk to maddox...

So basically...

Ashlyn was trying to give a present to Maddox on Opening Night that would be something special to both of them and trying to show her that Maddox was really important for her...

Through her actions..

It was like a deja vu... !

Am I being too delusional??

Probably..

Am I gonna stop??

Gonna drop this quick and run. But hear me out. I will start by saying that Ricky may very well have genuine feelings for Gina. I'm not dismissing that. I just couldn't help but notice somethings about Ricky's reactions here:

As soon as EJ and Gina start fighting in 3.05, Ricky immediately covers his ears (kinda like a child does when their parents are fighting at home). I get the feeling he was used to his parents fighting a lot when he was younger, and his instinct was to cover his ears. He also looks at both EJ and Gina in 3.06 during the canoe scene. I think it's at that moment that he realizes just how much EJ and Gina truly care about one another, and how much they're fighting for their relationship. Thinking back to S2, he was also fighting really hard for his rela with Nini. But he learned to let her go because that was for the best. He actually gets that advice from his mom, who he understandably holds a lot of resentment towards. I could be wrong, but I read his expression in the 2nd gif as someone who has seen his own parents fail to save their relationship, but sees two people, despite all their recent tensions, still fighting for their relationship.

Earlier that day, Ricky comes face to face with his dad's new girlfriend and is presented with a gift from Mike via Miss Jenn:

I definitely think Ricky still feels uncomfortable at the idea of his teacher and father dating, even if he's trying to act like he's okay with it. When he receives the gift, he's not exactly happy about it. It's sort of surprises him, but not in a good way. Perhaps it's a not so subtle reminder that things have really changed for him back home. Later that day, he sees EJ and Gina trying their best to save their relationship, then hears this from Jet that night:

Jet, being "little Ricky" and all (3.02), admits that he feels like it's his fault Madison and Maddox broke up. Does that not sound like how Ricky feels about himself in terms of his parents marriage? Perhaps he also blames himself for the downfall of his parents relationship. He couldn't save it or fix it. Instead of dealing with his own problems, Ricky is throwing himself into Jet and Maddox's issues to try to save their relationship. I think the majority of Ricky's issues in terms of romantic relationships always goes back to his parents, which they still haven't fully addressed. Three seasons in a row, and Ricky's main storyline revolves around his love life. If there's any chance for Ricky to truly move forward and find the path to true happiness, this season has to end with Ricky single and not ready to mingle and being okay with that. He hasn't taken any significant amount of time for himself to himself. I also think it's difficult for him to see EJ and Gina have the kind of summer he was expecting to have with Lily. While I don't think Lily broke his heart, I do believe she broke his trust. He even blames himself for why things fell apart because he said "How could I be so stupid?" in 3.01 during his breakup w/ Lily. He shows up to camp and the first image he sees are a genuinely happy and loving couple (Portwell). It seems like Ricky wants what they have because he was expecting to have a fun summer in a new relationship. Jet's line above definitely hit a nerve for Ricky because I think it reminds him of how things fell apart for his parents. In order to escape the pain he's feeling, Ricky tries to "fix" the relationship problems around him. One last thing, I don't think it's a coincidence that 3.06 is the first time this season that Ricky's acknowledged his past with Nini (also in conversation with Jet). In Ricky's eyes, he's had two failed relationships in a short amount of time, and to overcompensate for that, he tries to fix everyone else's relationship problems instead. I'm wondering what the last two episodes have in store for his character arc, because so much of it so far has been romance-based. For this character to actually progress in a positive way, he has to learn that it's okay to not be okay and that true happiness doesn't come from being in a relationship.
