1. are you named after anyone?

i am not! my middle name was an homage to my mom's grandparents but i have since changed it and my parents are blessedly allergic to otherwise naming anything after anybody

few days before christmas

3. do you have kids?

no and i do not want to. i have one fur baby (that i co-parent with my parents lmao) though as you all well know (scout my baby boy <3)

4. what sports do you play/have you played?

played kids' baseball/softball until i was like 10/11 bc i was constantly in the outfield and nobody can pitch until you get to like. high school. so it was boring and i hated it so i quit. i was on dance team for a while until i had to drop it bc recital dates kept being on the same days as school band concerts. was in marching band throughout high school, which counts bc i was a percussionist and had to lug around those heavy drum harnesses

5. do you use sarcasm?

a ridiculous amount. if we also count like comedic lying in this i accidentally convinced a coworker that there were only three seasons of spongebob doing that whole pretending that only the good parts of a show exist. such a shame spongebob ended after season 3. there's no more of it! just too bad

8. scary movies or happy endings?

while i love gothicness and gothyness i am a Known Weenie and certain types of gore literally make me feel faint. like the finale of the terror s1 made me a little faint and gave me the sweats and i had to fully pause the episode and lay on the floor for a while. so i guess categorically happy endings based on that. if a scary movie isn't super gory though i'll go for it

9. any talents?

i’m very performing arts inclined! i play piano, sing, dance, and act (was a theatre major in college). i memorize things quickly if i set my mind to it, am great at navigating, have great pitch memory (like i can be exactly or near-exactly on pitch when singing something i’ve heard before even without backing accompaniment. this unfortunately drives me crazy when people post pitch-shifted versions of songs and i can tell they’re off. bearer of the curse), decent stage combatant, good crowd weaver, and somehow bear the ability to unintentionally come off as intimidating to basically everyone i’ve ever met

i'm something of a gamer in my spare time. basically only solo joints though i'm not like gamer nhlers that play like. league of legends or fortnite or counterstrike. i've recently joined a community band and a bar trivia team (with my old middle school choir teacher lmao. he's a homie), i write fic every once in a while, read, dance around the house, go for walks when it's not cold, snuggle my pup, and obviously watch hockey. i keep telling myself i'm going to learn how to sew but trying to find beginner projects for men types is fucking dire and i keep not going out to get fabric for the pirate blouse i keep wanting to make rip

12. do you have any pets?

ah there's a separate question for this. scout, my yellow lab baby boy whose breeder had a confederate flag up in his barn when we got him (we saved you buddy). have some pictures

i was a band/choir bitch. probably followed by english (literature). i liked basically all of it but phys ed though fuck that class i hate distance running it gives me a stitch in my side and you have to run a mile at least twice a semester (fuck you presidential fitness test). on top of all the other running they make you do. loved when they just did games though. matball my beloved

15. dream job.

actor, either stage or voice. unfortunately i do not want to live where the big voice acting studios are located and regional stage acting is kind of limited unless you go all the way out to chicago, which i tried for a couple of months before multiple breakdowns told me i should probably be closer to home. i enjoy being a librarian though :)

Max!"... anyone have any ideas? Perhaps also with "Happy Birthday, Baby"...?

Season 3, Part 2

Lorelai Out of Water The title is a twist on the familiar idiom, “fish out of water”, which refers to someone who feels awkward or uncomfortable in an unfamiliar environment. The earliest known use of the phrase comes from The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer in 1483, and was about someone riding a horse, which they weren’t used to. In this episode, Alex asks Lorelai on a fishing date, which she knows nothing about and gets Luke’s help with.

Dear Emily and Richard Through a series of flashbacks, we see how things played out for teenage Lorelai when she learns she’s pregnant and eventually leaves her parents’ house suddenly with baby Rory, telling them in a letter that presumably begins with “Dear Emily and Richard…”

Swan Song

A common metaphorical phrase for a final gesture, effort, or performance given just before death or retirement, referring to an ancient belief that swans sing a beautiful song just before their death since they have been silent (or alternatively not so musical) for most of their lifetime. The belief, whose basis has been long debated, had become proverbial in ancient Greece by the 3rd century BC and was reiterated many times in later Western poetry and art. This is of course jokingly referring to Jess getting “beaked” by a swan.

Face-Off In ice hockey, a face-off occurs at the start of each period, or to restart play. An official drops the puck between the sticks of two opposing players, who are then said to “face off” from each other in order to gain control of the puck. This episode has a hockey game as its focal point as well as several characters having “face offs” with each other, or efforts to gain control of their situations - Rory running into Dean and learning he’s moved on with Lindsay, Rory confronting Jess about his disrespect of her time, and Emily outing Trix’s affair with the tracksuit man.

The Big One“The Big One” is an informal name for World War II. It’s also a commonly used name for an anticipated megathrust earthquake along Western North America or Japan. It’s an appropriate name for this episode where several big important life events happen for multiple characters - Rory and Paris compete for the honor of speaking at Chilton's Bicentennial, Sookie and Jackson learn they are pregnant, Lorelai runs into Max and reignites old feelings, Paris has sex for the first time with Jamie and melts down on national television when she fails to get into Harvard, and Rory's college acceptance letters finally arrive. Lorelai says “You got the big one,” referring to the fact that acceptance letters come in big envelopes, whereas rejections come in small ones.

A Tale of Poes and Fire A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of fantasy novels by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. The stories depict a violent world, largely without magic and dominated by political realism. The title references the Society of Edgar Allan Poe fans staying at the Independence Inn when it suffers a fire.

Happy Birthday, Baby Happy, Happy Birthday Baby is a 1957 song written by Margo Sylvia & Gilbert Lopez originally performed by The Tune Weavers, who had their only hit with this song. This episode marks the one and only time Lorelai’s birthday is celebrated on the show.

Keg! Max! Lane’s band plays their first gig at a houseparty and she somehow drinks enough cheap beer from the keg to get drunk for the first time. Lorelai continues running into Max and pushing his boundaries. It’s common for young people to yell excitedly about kegs at parties.

Say Goodnight, Gracie This line is spoken by George Burns in the TV show The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show (1950-1958). Actors George Burns and Gracie Allen met in 1922 while they were both touring on the Vaudeville circuit. After falling in love and getting married, the two developed an act together—George would play the straight man and Gracie his silly and illogical wife. By the time they brought their act to TV in 1950, the two were a huge hit. The end of every show became a catchphrase: George and Gracie would come out and do some jokes until it was time to close the show, when George would turn to his wife and tell her, "Say goodnight, Gracie," and she would simply reply, "Goodnight." Thanks to Gracie’s ditzy delivery and the hilarious chemistry she had with George, this line became iconic. Presumably this title is referencing the ending of Jess and Rory’s relationship and/or his time in Stars Hollow

Here Comes the Son This episode title is a play on the song title Here Comes the Sun by the English rock band The Beatles from their 1969 album Abbey Road. It was written by George Harrison and is one of his best-known compositions. The lyrics reflect his relief at the arrival of spring and the temporary respite he was experiencing from the band's business affairs. In this episode, Jess leaves Stars Hollow to try and form a relationship and a new home with his estranged father in Los Angeles.

Those are Strings, Pinocchio Rory strikes a new deal with her Grandparents for more Friday night dinners in exchange for her Yale tuition. Lorelai warns her of the implications or “strings attached.” “Rory, honey, do you understand, the Gilmores do nothing altruistically. Strings are attached to everything.” “There are no strings.” “No strings?” “No. I just have to pay them back starting five years after I graduate and I have to start going back for Friday night dinners.” “Um, hello, Pinocchio, those are strings.” The Adventures of Pinocchio is a famous children’s novel written by Carlo Collodi in 1883. Pinocchio is a wooden marionette puppet operated by literal strings.

Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey

Sports games are a type of game where you get as much out of them as you want, providing you enjoy the core gameplay. Seasons can be incredibly long, and lots of these games are similar (especially yearly updates), so for the most part, I will be playing a bunch of matches and checking out different rules and settings.

My main knowledge of ice hockey is an EA game I played on the Mega Drive, but it’s a simple enough game to work out: get the puck into the opposing goal. I also picked the only team I recognized: the Mighty Ducks.

Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey is very smooth, fast paced and a lot of fun. The controls are simple to use and there’s nothing to complicate things. I mainly played with Arcade settings, but more serious players can use Simulation settings which add things like fouls and injury time. You can also choose to have more realistic size ice rinks and ul to 5 players.

The characters look a bit blocky, but in a way that is quite adorable these days. The game looks nice and clean, with the puck easy to see. There are also some nice silly little touches like the goalkeeper turning into a wall to signify a great save – with the voiced commentary making a reference to it.

You can play a single match, although oddly you can’t select your opponent without using a cheat code (the computer chooses at random). There is also a season mode which has a few options like half or full. Other than that, there aren’t a lot of nodes for the game.

Still, the core matches are a lot of fun and I can imagine it being great in multiplayer.

This super-fast, super-smooth Midway package turns out to be a strapping hunk of a game that’ll produce guffaws and gasps aplenty.

Remake or Remaster?

I think a remaster or new game would be quite nice. Sports games these days are either serious or cartoony, so serious-but-a-bit silly would be a nice change.

Official Ways to get the game

There’s no official way to play Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey, and I don’t know enough about modern sports games to recommend an alternative.

Remembering Gary Wright 1943-2023

Musician Gary Wright has died at 80.

I actually learned about Wright's music through Wayne's World. In the first SNL sketch of Wayne's World, Wayne sings this song. Then in a later sketch they had this song play during the dream sequences, i.e. hockey with Wayne Gretzky and truth or dare with Madonna. Then it was featured on in the 1992 movie and on the soundtrack, during the parts when Wayne sees Cassandra or Garth sees his dream girl.

Through Wright's mutual friend Klaus Voormann, Wright became close friends with George Harrison and they collaborated quite a bit. Wright played keyboards and organ on Harrison's magnum opus All Things Must Pass (read my review of the 2021 anniversary edition here). Wright also performed on Harrison's albums Living in the Material World, Dark Horse, Extra Texture, Thirty Three & 1/3, George Harrison, and Cloud Nine. Wright also performed on some songs with Ringo Starr too. From 2008-2011, Wright was a part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band, including the show I saw in July 2010 at Radio City Music Hall, where the band performed "Dream Weaver" and "Love is Alive".

The Chicago Blackhawks cancel a Pride-themed warm-up citing Vladimir Putin

In a remarkable reaction to a foreign country’s anti-LGBTQ+ policies, the Chicago Blackhawks, an NHL team, abandoned plans for players to wear Pride-themed jerseys during warm-ups this Sunday at the team’s Pride Night celebration, citing security concerns for three players with ties to Russia. The Chicago Tribune reported sources with the team say the Blackhawks didn’t want to risk “any media” depicting the Russians in Pride Night colors, which would put the players in conflict with official Russian government policy. --- Related Stories Former Log Cabin Republican “ambassador” tweets support for Uganda “Kill the Gays” bill The gay Republican group picked her to represent them, despite her history of using anti-gay slurs. And then this happened. --- In December, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an expansion of the country’s “gay propaganda” law, banning the promotion of “non-traditional sexual relations and/or preferences.” In a statement, the team sidestepped the issue of how another country’s discriminatory laws are directly impacting American players. “The Chicago Blackhawks organization is proud to continue its annual Pride Night celebration, an evening — alongside year-round efforts — fueled by partnership and LGBTQIA+ community engagement,” the team said in a statement Wednesday. “Together, our activities will focus on fostering conversation and more equitable spaces in our pursuit to make hockey more inclusive. Catra - Has been in love with theatre since she was a kid, wants to be an actress when she grows up. She’s only ever cast as the villain/antagonist because she’s so good at playing those roles, but she’s not complaining. Shadow Weaver hates her and constantly talks down to her whenever Angella’s not around. Really good singer.

Double Trouble - Also in love with theatre. Brings the drama. Really good at whatever role they receive. Always competes with Sea Hawk for the lead role regardless of gender.

Sea Hawk - Theatre kid is his entire personality and he lives for it. Competes with Double Trouble for the lead role regardless of gender. Loves roles that get to do fight choreography. Has a habit of setting at least one prop, set, or costume on fire every show. No one knows how, and honestly, neither does he.

Glimmer - Director kid vibes, we’ve all met one. You know what I’m talking about. Usually gets a big speaking role, but not the lead. Jealous of Catra bc Glimmer thinks the villains get better songs. Catra agrees and holds it over her head constantly. Has a habit of being an “actor director” sometimes, but never in a mean or condescending way, and most of the time Angella was going to give the same note. Most of the time.

Bow - Actor/Techie. Auditions for a role, but if he doesn’t get one, he’ll do tech. He doesn’t have a preference, he just likes being a part of the process and being with his friends. One of the only basses in the department.

Mermista - Actor/stage manager. Even when she has a role in the current show, Mermista is still the stage manager bc she’s the only one who can deal with and control everyone’s shit(aka Sea Hawk level shenanigans). Actually a really good actor when she puts effort into her roles, but it has to be for a show she actually likes.

Kyle - Usually ensemble, but sometimes he has small speaking roles. Famous for breaking or losing props.

Techies:

Entrapta - Sound/lights. Works with Hordak, they’re close friends. He’s dreading her graduation bc she’s the only who actually understands how to run the systems. She insists she’ll be back tho.

Scorpia - Build crew. Stronk. Nuff said. Started bc she wanted to support Catra, and kept doing it bc she thought the head costumer was cute.

Adora - Also build crew. Again, stronk. Paints occasionally because that was her first choice, but they lack muscle strength in build. Can only get away with painting if Lonnie is there that day. Joined to watch Catra and Catra only. Has only listed to the songs that Catra sings in her role. Has never listened to a full Broadway album. Glimmer is disappointed.

Lonnie - Build crew. Not that interested but comes to support her friends when she doesn’t have lacrosse practice. Never runs a show, but watches every night.

Rogelio - Paint crew. Adora lost an arm wrestling contest to him, and he got first choice. She’s forever salty for it but too nice to argue.

Perfuma - Head of costumes. Castaspella and her get along great, they practically have the same personality. Crushing on Scorpia.

Frosta - Costumes. Cousins with Mermista. Comes bc she heard about the chaos and drama that goes down. Will run shows if she doesn’t have hockey practice.

Swift Wind - Fly.

Tragedy 1: Angella had to step down as director bc Micah was in the hospital or something idk

Tragedy 2: 2 days later, Sea Hawk breaks his leg pretty bad and he won’t be better in time for the show

So Shadow Weaver takes over as director

Some Shadow Weaver background info: She was a famous actress many years ago and thinks this high school production stuff is below her. She still has a lot of connections to the professional world that she uses from time to time. She wants Adora to follow in her footsteps as a famous actor despite Adora being an incredibly bad actor. She hates that Adora does crew and not acting, but couldn’t do anything about it. Until now.

Now that she’s director and they’re down a Fiyero, she basically forces Adora to play Fiyero, despite the other capable actors who could’ve done it and Adora’s own protests. Think something like: “why can’t bow do it? I’ll be the wizard if there really aren’t enough actors!” “Oh no, bow is the only one who can hit the wizards notes bla bla bla”

Adora doesn’t want to do it, but she also doesn’t want the department to not be able to do the show. Plus she would get to hang out with Catra a lot which would be cool

I’m guessing you can already tell where the conflict is coming from, but we had some very clear ideas of stuff that happened, like

Adora was behind bc she wasn’t going to play the role originally, she’s never acted before, and she can’t dance. So she has a lot of one on one practices with Huntara, the choreographer. Before getting the role, the only practices Adora would watch if she didn’t have crew were the dance practices. She went purely to watch Catra, but Catra thinks that she has a crush on Huntara.

Tension and miscommunication, y’know?

Bow and Glimmer are both very supportive but also nervous bc they know that Adora is extremely bad at acting

Sea Hawk has never seen Adora try to act before, so he doesn’t see what the issue is. Once he’s well enough to go to school again, he comes to every rehearsal even tho he can’t be in the show. And then he sees. And then he’s like, oh no.

But he tries to be supportive and pump Adora up.

Adora is feeling a lot of pressure bc of her new role and doesn’t want to screw things up for everyone.

Catra is a little pissed off that she’s been paired up with someone who can’t act for her senior show, so she’s a little snippy at first, and Adora is tense, and it’s a mess

But Shadow Weaver doesn’t care, and ends up blaming every problem they have during an acting scene with Adora and Catra on Catra, even though she’s the best actor in the department. Because ✨favoritism✨

And you know, they do the whole hot-cold, she hates me, she’s cute, I love her but she doesn’t like me, bla bla bla throughout the course of the show

A week before opening night, Shadow Weaver makes things worse by mentioning that she invited her friend who’s a talent scout to watch the show. Shadow Weaver wants the scout to help get Adora into the acting business.

Catra wants to use this opportunity to get her name out there, so she needs her performance to be perfect

Which is hard to do when her love interest couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag

It’s two days before the show and they still haven’t practiced the kiss scene. Every time they brought it up before, like “should we practice the kiss? I mean, only if you want we don’t have to”, they both got the impression that the other didn’t want to kiss them

(Useless lesbians)

So it’s 2 days before the show, and Shadow Weaver is like, you gotta practice the kiss

So they kiss, and Catra is like, whoa she’s a really good kisser, so she’s quiet after the kiss

And of course, Adora takes that silence as “she hated the kiss and she hates me” as you do

So their practices the next two days are even worse than they were before

Finally, it’s opening night. The scout is coming and they’re out of time. Shadow Weaver ends up shoving Catra and Adora into a closet. She does her whole “you don’t want to let me, your friends, or the audience down do you? Whatever’s distracting you needs to go” to Adora, and then she turns to Catra and is like “fix what you’ve done, I know you sabotaged her you useless child. You’re going to be the reason this show goes horribly” and then she leaves

AND CATRA AND ADORA ACTUALLY TALK I KNOW IM SHOCKED TOO

Adora’s like, sorry I’ve been so weird the past two days, I just realized I really like you after we kissed, but I know you don’t feel that way about me, sorry if that makes it weird

And Catra’s like, Adora you idiot I love you

And they kiss

And Bow finds them still kissing in the closet 20 minutes before the show opens and rushes them to Castaspella to get their make up fixed

It ends up being Adora’s best performance because every time they’re about to go on for a scene together, Catra tells her to forget about the audience and just focus on her

The scout ended up liking Catra and Double Trouble a lot to Shadow Weaver’s disappointment

Facts that aren’t important to the main plot, but definitely happened

One time, before Sea Hawk broke his leg, Catra was trying out her harness for the defying gravity and other flying scenes, and Swift Wind, who does fly, accidentally dropped her and she landed on Adora

No Good Deed was the best moment in the show, and the amount of emotion Catra was able to put into her performance during that song was a little frightening but also made a lot of people tear up

The second best scene in the show was surprisingly As Long as you’re Mine, because Adora was actually able to forget about the audience and just focus on her love for Catra

The show last year was Mean Girls. Catra was Regina. Glimmer was Gretchen(you can’t argue that she doesn’t give off, “I don’t think my father, the inventor of toaster stroodle, would be very pleased to hear about this” vibes). Mermista was surprisingly amazing as Karen, and played her deadpan perfectly. No one knows how she did it. Sea Hawk was Cady, Double Trouble was Janice, and Bow was Damien. They reference their experiences during this show during Wicked, but the only thing Adora remembers about that production is how hot Catra was during World Burn.

Ironically (or unironically, idk), Glimmer once said “I don’t think my mother, the director of the show, will be very pleased to hear about this” to an actor who was found sabotaging Catra’s mic for the show before Mean Girls. Catra thought Shadow Weaver put her up to it but there was no proof.

Biography: Ashley, pen name A.L. Heard, fandom name jhoom, is a 35 year old teacher, writer, and mother of two little boys. Joe Batista, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ former coordinator of amateur hockey development: So many Pittsburgh area kids now are getting opportunities to play Division I college hockey, to go play in the OHL, and even make it to the NHL. Look at Sam Lafferty. I had Sam Lafferty in hockey camp when he was young. He was 45 minutes away from State College and here he is playing for the Penguins. How cool is that?

As a kid growing up in Hollidaysburg, Pa. - which is about two hours away from Pittsburgh, just outside of Altoona - Sam Lafferty fell in love with hockey after watching the Penguins' playoff run in 2001 when he was 6 years old.

A few years later, his beloved Penguins drafted Sidney Crosby with the first overall pick in 2005, and he immediately became Lafferty's favorite player.

Needless to say, it was incredibly surreal for Lafferty to make his NHL debut with the Penguins - who drafted him in 2014 - on Tuesday at PPG Paints Arena in their 4-1 loss to Winnipeg, with his first shift being centered by Crosby himself.

“You can't draw it up any better,” said Lafferty's stepdad, Dave Weaver. “We were watching warmups and he's standing next to Sid, and then we're standing there looking around at the crowd going, ‘Holy cow, this is pretty real.’”

Crosby being drafted certainly had a huge impact on growing hockey in the area and inspiring more kids to play.

“Sid getting drafted by the Penguins saved hockey in Pennsylvania, in my mind,” said Dave. “It galvanised youth hockey. They started the Little Penguins program and it just got so many more kids playing. At that time, there was talk about them moving the team. So it was a big deal when he got drafted. For Sam and Charlie to be able to watch Crosby is pretty awesome.”

Though Sam wouldn't just watch him play. After taking in a game, he would go to the rink the next day and try to replicate whatever he had seen Crosby do on the ice the night before.

“You would see Crosby make a move and the very next day, you'd see Sam in practice trying to mimic the same exact move,” said his childhood friend, Adam Badorrek. “And he would do it. I would do that and fall over right away (laughs). Sam was just so determined to be a great player, even from early on.”

catradora hockey au where both are goalies:

-they grew up together because it’s incredibly hard for me to write an AU where they haven’t known each other for their whole lives

-Catra was the one who always wanted to play goalie first but Adora wanted to be cool like Catra and as they got older, Adora was the one who got preferential treatment from the coaches

-the AU starts out with them playing for the same team, probably juniors??? idk the intricacies of actually being on a hockey team, I really only know the game as a spectator (being trans didn’t afford me a lot of opportunity to actually play growing up, not to mention the cost)

-anyway, Adora is the starting goalie for the Horde, and Catra’s the backup, but Adora is constantly overworked so her performance flags by the end of the season, causing the team to miss the playoffs or get knocked out the first round

-Catra only plays a handful of games each season, and it’s not enough for her to get into a groove, so her performances are often poor because she’s playing cold and the team in front of her doesn’t trust her to be as good as Adora, so they overcompensate and give up bad shots that Adora never has to worry about (which, in turn, means Catra gets less playing time)

-there’s some scandal during the off-season, maybe the Horde used illegal recruiting tactics or something, and with the team losing a deluge of draft picks as punishment, they can’t replace all the players aging out of the system, sothey’re forced to trade Adora for more players

-Adora becomes the starting goalie for Bright Moon while Catra takes over her spot in the Horde and it turns out that with regular play time, Catra is actually??? just as good as Adora??? but obvs Shadow Weaver/the coaching staff is unwilling to acknowledge that

-the season is a hot mess and halfway through, there’s a line brawl during a Bright Moon v Horde match with the main fight card belonging to Adora and Catra at centre ice, resulting in a lot of suspensions

-Catra gets cut from the team because of the suspension, Adora ends up getting injured while she’s suspended and Bright Moon just sees that Catra’s available and is like “it’s free real estate” basically. she still has to serve the rest of her suspension, but Catra plays the tail end of the season for Bright Moon and secures a playoff berth

-first round is prob against the Horde and Catra gets injured just as Adora is ready to play again. Adora comes in and plays well because it turns out resting your goalie is good, actually

-Bright Moon gets knocked out in the second round anyway and it kinda sucks but Adora and Catra are gonna play for Bright Moon next season together and they’re gonna be a tandem, splitting games equally and then they’ll win the cup

-or maybe that was their last season in juniors but it doesn’t matter that they didn’t win because they’re committing to the same college??? idk idk but what matters is that they’re together again and their relationship is balanced in a way that it wasn’t before

-also they’ll start kissing each other at some point and I just that’s very important of them

-She-ra’s tiara and Catra’s mask being incorporated into their goalie masks is very important to me, especially since it gives me the opportunity for Adora to incorporate Catra’s design into a new mask the same way She-ra’s S5 form has the Catra inspired mask

-I just really love goalies and I feel like they don’t get enough love in hockey AUs
