Pasternak's Russia via David Lean

Watching Dr. Zhivago (1965)—I most likely have not seen this film for thirty-five years or more.

The distinctive music gets me of course—it played on AM radio when I was a kid (mid- to late-1960s), so that's burned into the brain deeply. But look at just one of the shots David Lean (or perhaps Freddie Young, his Director of Photography) cooked up—really outstanding. The aspect ratio of Panavision matches Lean's penchant for the awe-inspiring, expansive landscape.

Omar Sharif and Julie Christie carry the film. Of course seeing, and listening to, Alec Guinness is always a treat. And, much to my surprise, this film had a small part for Klaus Kinski. [He and Werner Herzog nearly killed each other (literally) during the making of Fitzcarraldo.] In the end, Dr. Zhivago won four Oscars (including Freddie Young for his fine cinematography) and a truck load of Golden Globes.

I used to watch films like this on television while I was in art school back in the early 1980s. My friends and I would stay up, drinking beer, taking in staples such as Casablanca, 12 Angry Men, works by Hitchcock, etc. Prior to the diffusion of content via cable TV (akin to what happened with music with the rise of FM and streaming much later), these works were shown more regularly on network television: a comforting and recurring presence.

En effet, le directeur du centre de redressement a décidé de mettre à l'écart Pepe, le leader d'un groupe de nains de moins en moins tenable. Ces derniers décident alors de se révolter contre tout, et menacent le directeur. Celui-ci est coincé dans sa maison car il est privé, par la faute des nains, de téléphone ainsi que de voiture. Malgré ses menaces et ses tentatives de retrouver le calme, les nains n'en font qu'à leur tête et vont même jusqu'au vouloir incendier sa maison. Le début du film nous montre un des nains enfermé et en plein interrogatoire. L'histoire est racontée par celui-ci et on comprend au fur et à mesure pourquoi les nains se lancent dans de la violence gratuite. Le directeur, d'un côté, perdrait toute crédibilité à libérer son otage, Pepe. Mais, de l'autre, les nains sont bien décidés à sauver leur chef. Aucun ne peut céder et c'est ce qui pousse les nains à se révolter de plus en plus férocement. Today is the birthday of Werner Herzog. Known for directing films which attempt to find a strange paradoxical ecstasy amidst the ruins of the post-World War II existential imagination, I admit that for myself many of Herzog’s narrative features are sadly tarnished by the presence of Klaus Kinski, a man whose charms have lately soured my stomach. Fortunately Herzog’s many documentary features have always been more intellectually and spiritually stimulating anyway, though their pleasures sometimes have more to do with the audacious circumstances of their creation than the surface meaning gleaned by actually watching them in real time. A good example is LA SOUFRIERE (1977) in which Herzog and his film crew find out about a volcano predicted to erupt and immediately head straight for said volcano with a nearly suicidal abandon, hoping to interview those who did not evacuate the area but are simply waiting for nature to kill them. (The volcano, alas, did not erupt). I am of the small minority who think—or rather, know—that Herzog’s career peaked when he acted in Harmony Korine’s JULIEN-DONKEY BOY (1999), in which the famed German plays an abusive father who tries to get high by drinking cough syrup out of a sandal while muttering blissfully demented poetry such as: “Where are you Mount Everest? Give me some Everest.” A titan whose storied career and steely-eyed gaze has made his audience wonder whether he is in the end more truly mad or more truly sober than the rest of us.
