i see people thinking that the side story is the bad ending for kim dokja. and don't get me wrong, he doesn't come back after the door opens, but that is because kimcom CHOSE that.
they had the option to open a door where kim dokja woke up, but they chose to go through the door where he doesn't wake up because they know that first door is a trap (like 49/51), and they want all of kim dokja. and when they go through, kim dokja is gone, but he's left a note. he is STILL OUT THERE (and part of him is with lhh right now. it's complicated)
anyway this is just to say KIM DOKJA IS BACK IN THE SIDE STORY. he is just not with kimcom *yet*. i need to make this clear because i keep seeing people saying things that sound like people think he's gone for real in the side story.

I have sooooo many feeling about Yoo Sangah and Kim Dokja. She started work at the same time as Dokja, and she put pepper in the coffee maker when she saw he was being treated unfairly at work and did various other things instead of using her status as HR. She finds the idea of Dokja living a Dokja life as something inspiring instead of depressing like he does and tries to apply the idea to herself. She knows his contract details and asks him about what he’s reading and offers to help him learn other languages that they could study together. She was the first one to figure out the fact it’s a novel because she knows Dokja and what he’s like and into.
Like. She tried soooo hard to be his friend and support him and she’s clever, not just like smart in a straight A sense but she figures shit out, and reaches out to people, and has a strong sense of justice, and is insecure, literally being described as a woman who hid herself for others
and they could’ve been friends. Even after Dokja lost his job she would’ve wanted to. But he’s too damn busy thinking she’s too cool to talk to him and hating himself for anything to happen. They would’ve killed it at trivia night. They could have a book club together and Dokja picks out the themes and symbolism and she adds historical context for what things mean.
and that’s the danger I think of hating yourself. If you spend too much time putting everyone who isn’t you on a pedestal you don’t actually get to know anything about them or see when they’re repeatedly trying to reach out to you. If someone asks what you’re doing it might be genuine curiosity and they would be invested and not make fun of you for it. I 100% believe that she would’ve listened to him ramble about TWAS and maybe even read it herself if he just allowed himself to open up to her.
anyway. I love her and the whole cool girl who isn’t really thing makes me insane. She’s such a good person and she’s trying so hard

Everytime an anime-only makes a comment about Solo Leveling being cliche or only male power fantasy, it terrifies me more and more.
Because first off...
Tumblr media
But mostly....it scares me for the rumored ORV anime.
Because ORV starts off in disguise. It makes you think it's another run-of-the-mill male power fantasy (a good one, but in the genre nonetheless), and then it slowly peels back the curtain. ORV does have an overpowered male protagonist, but ain't no one want to be Kim Dokja. Not even Kim Dokja.
But it takes its time. Even the webtoon ain't at That Scene (Chap 188) yet. Let alone the full nature of The Fourth Wall and the existential meta exploration of reader, writer, and protagonist. It drip feeds all that.
Just read the reviews on Novel Updates. Read any review of a reader who never made it past chapter 100. (irl Renouncers if you will.) Abundant complaints about how it's cliche and Kim Dokja is too overpowered. It's uninteresting and doesn't do anything other action apocalypse fantasies don't. Blah blah blah etc etc. Compare those to any reviews marked "complete." Night and day.
Now imagine that on a much much larger scale. There are people watching SL rn that have never touched a manhwa or webnovel in their life. And you know as soon as an ORV anime comes out, people gonna be reviewing it based on those first couple episodes. They're gonna say so much stuff about how ORV is copying others in its genre and the main character is overpowered for no reason and a bunch of other things ORV does On Purpose so it can subvert them later. ORV is also a love letter to its genre, so first it has to be solidly IN the genre. So they're gonna criticize the genre instead of ORV itself.
The internet is going to be flooded with people who do not and probably will never know what ORV truly is. How plot threads that seem like they are dropped will come back when you least expect it. How you will finish the epilogue and question your entire existence as a person who reads. How Kim Dokja is both someone the reader can and doesn't want to project themselves onto. He's the Rule of Cool but also inherently tragic.
There are gonna be so many ignorant comments and it's going to be so hard not to THROW HANDS.

"Huh. Actually, ahjumma, your son's gone to some place with someone. But that place is…" "Are you perchance speaking of that?" Han Sooyoung followed Lee Sookyung's pointing finger and turned her head. The TV mounted on the wall was playing a news footage. The scene on the screen showed a man wearing a white coat floating in the jet-black sky, with Kim Dokja dangling off that man's arm. – Breaking news! < Kim Dokja's Company >'s president kidnapped! Han Sooyoung's jaw dropped to the floor as she muttered softly. "…What the heck is that?" For some unfathomable reason, the Earth's media had found out about that event. Lee Sookyung and her rather relaxed expression stared at the screen for a little while, then she nodded her head. "That boy. He's still so popular." "Ahjumma?! Don't you get that it's a pretty serious problem??" "But, he looks like Yoo Joonghyuk-gun. So, what can be a serious problem?" "Because that's not the 'Yoo Joonghyuk'. That's the problem."
Oh man, where do I even begin?
First off, it’s still completely wild to me that Earth’s news continues to broadcast. That electricity for TVs and computers and communication in general is still being produced. That power lines and internet cables are still intact.
Like this all seems like such a huge apocalyptic scenario without even talking about the actual apocalyptic scenario, just the fact that scenarios exist in general with giant monsters and groups of Incarnations and Constellations out to do no good and straight up Death as the penalty for failing even simple scenarios and and and...and yet the news still persists. I guess I’m so used to seeing canons where stuff like this happens and all of society completely breaks down all Dawn of the Dead style.
Of course, now it’s switched to reporting on things like Kim Dokja, the random nobody who’s been at the forefront of completing the Main Scenarios alongside his party, who are also random nobodies aside from Yoo Joonghyuk, the famous pro gamer lmfao.
Secondly...
His mom’s reaction!!!
“Ma’am your son has been kidnapped.”
*News literally shows a completely helpless Dokja being slung across someone’s arm and carried off.*
Lee Sookyung: “Oh it’s just Joonghyuk, I’m certain he’s fine. My son’s so popular.”
adkfjsldjfksdkfadfs
Dokja’s mom is 100% fine with her son being kidnapped by Yoo Joonghyuk without any further context whatsoever.
(To be fair, she was the one to realize that Joonghyuk was the person most loved by her son back in that arc so…)
Oh man, what is the rest of the world thinking? DO THEY THINK THE SAME THING? “Oh isn’t that guy Kim Dokja’s companion? Nbd.”
Thirdly! The way Joonghyuk just keeps rewinding the TV and glaring at Secretive Plotter as he takes Dokja away. Oh man, he’s so pissed.
It may very well be the last thing he ever does in this regression but he’s so gonna throw hands the instant he sees Secretive Plotter again.
Fourthly!!! Bihyoung absolutely distributed that footage. He may be Dokja’s secret dokkaebi BFF (not so secret anymore) but he knows a good show when he sees one.

I haven't read the entirety of the side stories yet, but I am being driven crazy over the fact that the kim dokja fragments all want to live so so so badly, but the kimcom wants their 100% kim dokja back so badly that theyre killing(i think???) all the fragments they can find (or at least thats what it seems like is happening??? i dunno afikjsdfksdkflsd sorry if im wrong im guessing) if they actually succeed in doing so, will the fragments remember wanting to live so badly before failing? before having died?
anyway I think the authors are so powerful for making me despair in ORV when 51% dokja was left behind, and then later in the side stories made me feel so much softness and warmth when heewon was the first one to step towards the portal where kim dokja lived, because even if he's changed he's still the person she loves, even if his memories aren't all there, even if he isn't 100% who he once was, she still 100% loves him anyway. fuck it this is a heewon appreciation post now

for the ask game? your current favorite ship, and meeting on a train ride au
this couldn’t ever be anything but an ORV fic
Kim Dokja didn’t want to feel uncharitable, but the last thing he needed right now was his train getting delayed because someone had decided to end their life in such an inconvenient way. There were neater solutions to it, though he supposed jumping in front of a train was at least more effective than jumping out of a window.
But honestly, Kim Dokja couldn’t care less. He just wanted to go home and, well, figure out what he was supposed to do with the rest of his life. Maybe he should just read Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse again? Even if the novel had disappeared from the website, Kim Dokja had copied and saved a version on it on his laptop at home. He had left the author many comments, been its only true commenter. It was a story written just for him, he could allow himself this indulgence, especially if he would pay for the novel in the future.
And then, finally, an announcement rang out.
Telling all passengers on the train. Telling all passengers on the train. E-Everyone run away… Run…!
What?
The moment the announcement was finished, the inside of the carriage became a mess, people standing up and screaming. Kim Dokja checked his phone, wondering if there was some other news appearing, yet he saw nothing but the usual weather forecast, the random game apps he had downloaded. And then the time switched from 6:59 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
At once, the darkness grew heavier, oppressing, the weight of the world bearing down on him as slowly a figure emerged.
[The free service of planetary system 8612 has been terminated.]
[The main scenario has started.]
Familiar words rang out and Kim Dokja held his breath as a scene he’d only ever pictured in his head and drawn clumsily in school notebooks blurred into reality. A small fluffy creature floated above their heads and it proclaimed horrors Kim Dokja had seen as his salvation for over a decade. As people needlessly pestered the dokkaebi, Kim Dokja sat still. This was just like his novel. A train, a monster—
Kim Dokja raised his head, searching for the number of the train carriage. Which one had he boarded?
[3707]
Oh.
This story could only have one ending, could it? And it wasn’t one he was meant to see.
The subway became a bloodbath before the main scenario even started. Had Kim Dokja not read this story before, would he have reacted the same way? Would he be smeared against the glass windows now, dead before the story even really began?
Kim Dokja calmly put his phone in his pocket. Only he knew the future and if he was lucky enough, had proven himself faithful enough to his reason for living, then maybe he’d be allowed to live past the prologue.
A small window emerged in front of everyone’s blank eyes.
[The main scenario has arrived!]
The dokkaebi smiled bloodthirstily before it bowed. [I look forward to an interesting story.]
The next moment, the screaming started again. Kim Dokja turned to the left, the very end of the carriage, from where the people were starting to drop like flies. No question then where the protagonist was. Kim Dokja turned to his right. He hadn’t noticed it before, but the person next to him, they hadn’t moved at all either, had they?
There sat a boy, probably not even middle school aged, holding a box of grasshoppers. Wirely, Kim Dokja thought that he’d need the power boost to face the protagonist.
“Let me,” he told the boy and took the box from him. He opened it just so to get a single one out and pressed it into the boy’s hand. “Now squeeze.”
The boy did as told on reflex, his widening a moment later. With that, Kim Dokja had done his part, repaid the debt he owed the kid. Another particularly gruesome scream and a glance towards the left told him he didn’t have much time. Quickly he reached within the box, squishing all the insects and eggs inside.
[You have killed a living thing.]
[100 coins have been earned as additional compensation.]
Rapidly, the notifications rang out, and just as quickly, Kim Dokja invested them, and that not a moment too late as the last person standing between him and the protagonist was easily tossed aside.
Kim Dokja grimaced and pushed the kid behind him.
Yoo Joonghyuk stared at him with cold narrow eyes, as if searching for something. “Unusual.”
Somehow, Kim Dokja couldn’t keep from grinning. “Did that not happen in your last regression?”
It was only thanks to his added speed that Kim Dokja evaded Yoo Joonghyuk reaching for him. Yoo Joonghyuk might have killed more people than anyone else on this train, but it was Kim Dokja who’d win the trophy for mass murder, having killed the most living beings.
“What do you know?”
“More than you,” Kim Dokja replied. “I can definitely lead you to the end of scenarios. Make me your companion, Yoo Joonghyuk. You won’t regret it.”
The protagonist’s eyes widened.
Yes, Kim Dokja thought. This is what I stayed alive for.

I really, really like Kim Dokja as a woman in fics.
A cursory dive into men and women in ORV.
PREFACE: I love this IP as it is, I'm not a gender studies expert, and I'm a cis woman. So this is just me musing on this, and hopefully encouraging other writers and fanfic aficionados to fuck with gender roles and have fun with it.
I'm also not 100% sold that any of this was intended by the author or that other readers will like or agree with this take — a lot of it is how I, personally, have chosen to frame the text for myself.
I’ll also say that genderbending KDJ to make the Joongdok ship into a cishet one can be viewed as problematic, but I’m not really talking about the ship. More about the characterization.
I’m basically about to give you 2,000 words of this. That’s a lot. But here’s my Tl;dr
[Spoilers ahead. Also CW for some talk about SA in the webnovel.]
Just in case you don't feel like reading a 2,000 word character analysis and musing on men, women, and the treatment of gender in ORV.
Because ORV is largely told from Kim Dokja’s perspective, his view of gender and their roles is incredibly impactful on the narrative and the story we’re told.
That trickles down into how we’re shown characters and, in turn, how he values certain traits attributed to his concept of gender roles.
In the real world, pre-scenarios, he’s only seen the worst of men. From his father to his bullies to assholes at work — men just suck.
Enter Yoo Joonghyuk, the fictional hero of Ways of Survival.
YJH’s masculinity is, to Kim Dokja, what every man should really strive to be. Yes, he’s very strong and very handsome — but he's also deeply emotionally complex. He also cooks, cleans, and raised a baby all by himself, SO.
Add women to the mix: KDJ is absolutely surrounded by strong and resilient women right from the jump. We saw what Han Sooyoung and Kim Sookyoung did with the little fuzzy knowledge they had in the early scenarios. I can’t even imagine what they could have done with KDJ’s reference material.
All that combined makes female Kim Dokja just... honestly a powerhouse of a character to explore in my opinion.
Men in the "real world."
Growing up, Kim Dokja's male role models were... lackluster. At best. And Kim Dokja didn't fit any of the forms of masculinity presented to him.
His father, the first male role model in most children’s lives, was an abusive piece of shit.
At school, he was bullied by other boys.
Moreover, he wasn't able to thrive in the army, nor could he thrive in a white collar environment (see: Han Myungoh).
And why the fuck would he want to be like that guy?
So Kim Dokja's male role model was found in a web novel. Yoo Joonghyuk, a fictional character, captured his attention.
Yoo Joonghyuk is what Kim Dokja believes an ideal man should be from his beginning all the way to his end — round zero to 1863 and beyond. He wants to be like that guy.
Yoo Joonghyuk = complex, strong, deeply emotional but resilient
Men in the real world = churlish, brutish, villainous, or otherwise just meatheads.
That leads me to men in the early scenarios.
From the earliest scenarios, Kim Dokja is surrounded by strong women. Right from the jump.
Yoo Sangah adjusts to the new world almost immediately. Jung Heewon's sense of justice makes her the strongest member of the group. Han Sooyoung is a BAMF. Lee Seolhwa is the smartest person in the room and the only woman who's ever caught and held Yoo Joonghyuk's attention. Hell, Shin Yoosoung is Kim Dokja's powerhouse ward and loyal follower — to the point that she reincarnates herself without her memories to serve his purpose.
Aside from Lee Hyunsung, whom Kim Dokja often describes as a being a real stand up guy, the only man he spends real significant amount of time with is Yoo Joonghyuk.
We have to remember that this story is from Kim Dokja's perspective, so it's entirely possible that there were other men around, but that he just didn't see it that way.
At any rate, the worst, least complex characters are often the men of the story. This is especially true of the men in the early scenarios, which show Kim Dokja’s POV a little more straightforwardly, so I’m going to use them as primary examples.
Take, for example, Chapter 17: Ep. 4 - Line of Hypocrisy, II. Here, Kim Dokja has come upon a disheveled Jung Heewon who's dying in the street with her "jacket...half removed and a bit of her skirt...torn," left for dead lying in the streets, slowly dying from poison gas. He assumes she's been sexually assaulted.
He quickly figures out who the attackers are, because they try to attack him too. When Uriel starts a bounty scenario to take the villains down, Kim Dokja says this:
Tumblr media
And again:
Men in the real world = churlish, brutish, villainous, or otherwise just meatheads.
Let's get even more literal here.
Take, for example, Song Minwoo, a bully from the pre-scenario world who shows up during the scenarios as a literal monster.
This is a villanous male in Kim Dokja's life who, coincidentally, has some of the same knowledge as him, having read some of the chapters of Ways of Survival. And he learned nothing, except how to bully better.
Yo FUCK that guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's go for another example.
Quality Assurance Dept. Deputy Yoon Sangho and the Mino Soft coin farm.
Coincidentally (completely on purpose) in the same chapter we meet Song Minwoo, we're introduced to another male character who was actually not antagonistic IRL.
Guess what? He's antagonistic now.
As a quick recap, when Kim Dokja gets there, he finds that the coin farm has captured Han Sooyoung. They plan to "make content" with her, and Yoon Sangho offers Kim Dokja a first go at her if he gives them more resources.
Read panels left to right, top to bottom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ew.
So much ew.
ANYWAY. Will reiterate the pattern here:
Men in the real world = churlish, brutish, villainous, or otherwise just meatheads.
I don't think it's a stretch for sexual violence to be considered a man's weapon. I also don't think it's a stretch to imagine that Kim Dokja, in spite of knowing this, won't attribute it to gender verbally — he'll just show us how he sees it. That's... kind of his thing.
Let's touch on Yoo Joonghyuk as Kim Dokja's Masthead for just a second before getting into the women of ORV.
I won't get into the later scenarios too much, because a majority of the new male characters are transient aside from Yoo Joonghyuk and his various regressions. And then we get POVs from (ahem) other characters.
So I'll get into YJH's regressions.
I've really hammered in how much men suck in ORV, but not really much about why Yoo Joonghyuk isn't like that. He's Kim Dokja's companion. His foil. (The love of his life.)
This is where things get complicated, because this guy is literally Kim Dokja's role model and, in a lot of ways, the center of his universe.
But that's why it's also most interesting part.
Yoo Joonghyuk remains the masthead. And it's not for his physical strength.
In spite of all of his changes in personality, he's still the same person underneath, who's fundamentally lonely and depressed as all hell. He's seen lifetimes of loss and goes on to transcend humanity, time, and space to become a fucking god. Even so, he perseveres through it to find the very end.
That emotional resilience and strength is what Kim Dokja admires in his only male role model.
Now let’s turn our eyes to the women in ORV.
Oh, this is so juicy.
The characters that show the most development in both the short and long time, with the exception of Lee Hyunsung, are women. I'm just gonna name some of the women in the early scenarios. There are so, so, so many other examples, from constellations to YJH's mentor, etc.
In order of appearance (I think):
Yoo Sangah
The most adaptable character of the earlier chapters
She starts chapter 1 as a high-achieving, kind of prim lady. She very quickly makes a deal with her constellation to become a badass who wears a catsuit, becoming stronger and stronger, kicking asses and taking names. She's also still good with kids.
Once it's established she's not a love interest, though, her prominence largely fades from the story. Side-eye.
Jung Heewon
Literally the best person KDJ knows. The moral high-ground and trauma-buster.
As previously mentioned, her first appearance in ORV is as an SA victim. Within about 10 minutes of reading time, she shows that she's able to put aside her trauma and discomfort to get shit done (a very traditionally masculine trait, by the way). She serves as the absolute good of KimCom and is often portrayed at the angel on his shoulder. She's also one of the strongest characters in the series by the end.
Shin Yoosoung
The little girl who believed she was evil, and eventually became it until she defied her fate.
A little girl who will one day become a villain. It can't be understated how complex this girl's trauma is from the moment we meet her, especially knowing that her fate is to be betrayed and trapped in slavery for all of eternity.
Kim Sookyung
The Wanderer King, Kim Dokjas mother, a false villain.
Fate did Kim Sookie dirty.
First of all, she introduced Kim Dokja to reading and the joy of reading things again and again, which eventually led him to Ways of Survival.
When Kim Dokja killed his abusive father as a young child, she framed herself so that she'd take the fall for the incident.
She wrote a book to collect royalties and help him live an independent life while she was in prison. To protect him from the truth, she let herself be the villain to her own son.
He held onto that — he was bullied in school because of her, and he didn't know the truth. So he resented her.
And when the truth came out, and Kim Dokja realized she wasn't the villain, she was eaten by the Fourth Wall. Holy shit. Of course, she was spit right back out when Dokja begged for it, but holy shit.
Long story short: not only was she not a villain, she maintained an unconditional familial and selfless love for Kim Dokja and protected him from the worst trauma imaginable by taking on the role of a villain.
Kim Dokja as a woman.
In my opinion. Just mine. Based on all the above.
Kim Dokja as a woman in explorative fics is fascinating to me.
As someone who's never resonated with traditionally masculinity, admired the story for what it was, defied it in the way he did, and admired the protagonist in a deeply emotional way, I just... just...
AH.
Ruthless, cunning, manipulative, largely (largely) asexual (we don't have to get into that here), and probably (maybe?) aromantic (definitely aromantic) — these are all traits that subvert traditional femininity too.
And I have to say — the family of cishet wiil-they-won't-they tropes could also be greatly subverted here, because this isn't a romance. It's a story about companionship.
I want emotional intimacy without the physical intimacy. I want the physical intimacy without the emotional intimacy. I want platonic love explored without emotional or physical intimacy at all.
But most importantly, I want it from a female character. Because I think that would be fucking cool. I’m tired of “woman with bow and arrow hates dresses and isn’t like other girls,” and I’m also tired of, “woman likes dresses but goes so super traditionally feminine that she eschews any masculine traits at all.” There’s a flavor of empowerment in both. But I want to see a next evolution, pleeeease.

Kim Dokja & You, The Reader: A 51% Kim Dokja Character Analysis
Disclaimer: this is mainly an analysis of my own personal feelings while reading the epilogue, although I’m sure this is also applicable for other ORV fans too.
51% KDJ is our narrator. It’s the part of KDJ that loves Ways of Survival, and KDJ first and foremost is a reader to us; that’s how he introduces himself, after all, in the very beginning of ORV. That’s the whole premise, even. One man manages to successfully navigate the apocalypse all because he’s read a book about it. 51 feels genuine and authentic to us in a way that the third-person narrator 49% KDJ, who has lost all interest in TWSA, doesn’t. 49, in comparison, feels like a pale facsimile. 49 can’t be the actual Kim Dokja, because the Kim Dokja we know is on the subway narrating the book to us.
And so as the reader, when 51 is stuck on the subway, it feels like the real KDJ has been left behind. 49 is just an avatar, after all. The actual KDJ isn’t there to experience life after the scenarios with his companions, and that’s why it’s so heartbreaking. Surely, after everything he’s gone through, doesn’t KDJ deserve to be happy?
Here’s the thing: even before falling into the coma, 49 being able to spend time with KimCom still doesn’t feel like a happy ending. There’s a falseness to it; it doesn’t sit right. During the picnic, Yoo Sangah has a conversation with Han Sooyoung; she asks HSY if she really thinks that the other companions haven’t noticed that something is off about Dokja. But then she continues:
“That person is also Dokja-ssi. Doesn’t matter how much percentage he is made out of, there’s no doubt that he is Dokja-ssi. Dokja-ssi who journeyed together with us.”
Yoo Sangah asked her. “Is there any meaning in deciphering which one is really him?”
(Chapter 521)
This raises the following question: who really is Kim Dokja? YSA makes a good point here; 49 has all the important memories that KDJ shared with them, and it’s impossible to truly know 100% of a person, so isn’t it enough that they still have the 49% that matters?
But as a reader, you’re left feeling unsatisfied like HSY because you know that the 49% avatar isn’t really him. Of course it isn’t enough. The 49% of him that’s there isn’t the same KDJ that we know; that one is stuck on the subway.
But that’s not quite right either. Because the KDJ on the subway, as genuine as he feels, is still only 51% of him. We as the readers are like YSA in that respect; we can’t truly know all of KDJ either. KDJ the first-person narrator is different from KDJ the companion, and as the reader, there’s this fundamental distance between our world and his that we’ll never be able to comprehend.
So you’re left looking at 51 thinking, “This is the one that matters! Come get him off the subway!” If you’re me, you might even be looking at YSA thinking, “How can you be happy like this?! This isn’t a happy ending!”
But in reality, you’ve fallen into the same trap. The only part of KDJ’s story you can really know is the parts that he tells you, and as an unreliable narrator, you know he’s leaving things out. Sure, you also know his backstory and his internal monologue. You might even think you can comprehend him the best as his reader, but really, there’s this line between character and companion that we can never fully understand. This line mirrors his own initial experiences with Yoo Joonghyuk; at the start, YJH is only ever a character to him until he learns to see him as a person.
Basically, what I’m trying to say is that we don’t know 100% of Kim Dokja either. In the epilogue, Kim Dokja is split into two parts: 49, the part that his companions know, and 51, the part that we know. The part that’s been telling the story. ORV is so brilliant because it engages with us, the reader, as part of the story too. We further its thematic arcs through engaging with it; KDJ is to us as YJH is to KDJ, and that line between character and personhood is further exemplified through this. There’s a sort of hypocrisy there, in criticizing YSA, if, like me, you really only wanted 51 to be happy again.
HSY and YJH’s character arcs make me go wild because they recognize that nobody can ever truly know 100% of a person. They don’t care; they want all of him back anyway. This is all just to say ORV truly is the greatest found family love story ever written.

Okay against the Kim Dokja is small and slender agreement so he bottoms (and just about Kim Dokja)
I was talking to a friend and remembered Kim Dokja enhanced his body twice physically, so I decided to make a post.
Alright, don't look at my url lol but objectively speaking, Kim Dokja in the novel enhanced his body physically twice.
I moved forward and the pressure of the 'status' bursting from the centre of the battlefield became stronger. It was a fearsome storm of magic that I had never experienced before. The centre definitely contained Yoo Joonghyuk. 「 Kim Dokja thought: Is there a way? 」 The pages of Ways of Survival flashed in my head. 「It isn't possible. 」 「That method is too unreasonable. 」 I bit my lips. I predicted that this situation might happen. However, the time passed too quickly and I had been asleep for too long. I was late. Yoo Joonghyuk was still far away and the wind wasn't on my side. I could buy a new skill from the Dokkaebi Bag but I can't guarantee its utilization. In the end, I made a decision. "I will invest three million coins into my strength, physique, agility and magic power." [Your total stats have grown abnormally!] [The coins you invested have allowed you to cross the stats limit of the scenario.] [A fuller probability will release some of the stat constraints for this scenario.] [The growth of the stats value compared to the invested coins will be randomly adjusted.] A tremendous amount of sparks jumped from my body. It felt like my muscles were tearing and growing bigger. There was the feeling of my bone density changing and a terrible pain came over me. "Cough…" I had put it off until now due to the poor cost to value ratio but there was no other way. [Your mind can't cope with your evolving incarnation body.] [The exclusive skill 'Fourth Wall' is activated!] [Your incarnation body is evolving to a new level!] Since the early scenarios, the 'overall stats' didn't have a big influence on combat. It was because stories, stigmas and skills had much more influence. In addition, since the number of coins per level after level 100 was exponentially larger, it was more advantageous to buy a skill using the same amount of coins. Now the situation was different. [All your stats have exceeded 200!] [Your incarnation body can handle a bigger 'status'.] I needed a strong body, not a powerful skill. [Your agility has reduced the air resistance.] [Magic power is opening up the blocked bloodstream.] A huge amount of coins was transforming my incarnation body. [Your strength is causing an explosive change!] The frequency of my footsteps and the speed at which the landscape passed in my vision changed drastically. "Yoo Joonghyuk!" Of course, it was impossible to surpass the constellations or transcendents. Still, it was enough to confront them for a while. [Many constellations are envying your incarnation body.] I crossed the wilderness at a tremendous speed and the centre of the battlefield finally entered my eyes. At the centre, I could see a dying person. "You idiot! What are you doing?" In front of Surya's radiant light, Yoo Joonghyuk was dying. I didn't know where his left arm had gone and steam was rising from his charred body. Even so, Yoo Joonghyuk was gripping the Black Heavenly Demon Sword without moving an inch. Yoo Joonghyuk's head moved slowly towards me. His voice wasn't heard, as if he had no strength to open his lips. [The 'Fourth Wall' is greatly shaken.] The words of the Mass Production Maker came to mind. The constellations were also just part of this great story. They were also lonely and had to do these things. …Bullshit.
And he did it to save Yoo Joonghyuk, which is quite protective Top behavior. This is canon! Kim Dokja at least after this scene, does not have his small and slender body anymore because he chose to enhance his body physically to save Yoo Joonghyuk.
And he did it with the coins won by the miracle bet on Yoo Joonghyuk which Yoo Joonghyuk helped him win, that's so romantic!
(He's such a protective Top.)
(And he was so angry at the constellations, saying that they were lonely was Bullshit)
It's physically. Affecting his body.
A tremendous amount of sparks jumped from my body. It felt like my muscles were tearing and growing bigger. There was the feeling of my bone density changing and a terrible pain came over me.
Kim Dokja himself said his muscles grew bigger, Yoo Joonghyuk is muscular, but Kim Dokja also became muscular (for Yoo Joonghyuk).
His bone density changed, maybe he even grew taller.
I needed a strong body, not a powerful skill. A huge amount of coins was transforming my incarnation body.
Kim Dokja says himself he got a strong body.
[Many constellations are envying your incarnation body.]
Constellations even envied his bigger physical body.
[Your strength is causing an explosive change!]
His strength is explosive.
[All your stats have exceeded 200!]
His stats all exceeded 200, and Kim Dokja looked at Yoo Joonghyuk's status before, they were just over 100+, so Kim Dokja could be stronger than Yoo Joonghyuk.
[Steamers are also part of the story.] The desperate Bihyung stared at the screen. Yoo Joonghyuk was gradually melting in the dazzling sunlight. Now the story was leaving the streamer's hand. Thus, there was only one thing to believe in. [Many constellations are looking at one constellation.] The man on Lee Hyunsung's back was shaking. On the screen, the man was slowly opening his eyes.
Also everyone expected Kim Dokja to save Yoo Joonghyuk, 'many constellations' expected Kim Dokja to save Yoo Joonghyuk!
"I will invest three million coins into my strength, physique, agility and magic power."
Well I guess Kim Dokja said it himself. He enhanced his physique so his muscles and bones grew bigger. And his strength.
So regardless of Kim Dokja's position in bed, objectively speaking, he has bigger muscles after enhancing his body and his body could be as big as Yoo Joonghyuk's. Basically he's just not 'small and slender' anymore (although I don't think 178cm is small...).
Second enhancement
Thankfully, I couldn't see Cheok Jungyeong next to me. The moment my transfer was complete, the acrid odour of blood stung my nose. I was greeted by the grisly sight of dead corpses belonging to Constellations and Incarnations strewn about on a vast plain. This sight was more than enough to dampen one's spirit, but I was relieved to see it, actually. It was far more advantageous to start this scenario later than the others, as that would lower the odds of running into powerful Constellations that had entered here beforehand. ['Probability of the 2nd generation' is active within the relevant area.] [A portion of your skills have been unlocked.] [A portion of your overall Stats have been restored.] Along with the crackling noise, I felt my shoulders grow just a bit wider, while my height grew, too. I had been feeling really constricted for some time, but now, it felt like I could breathe a bit easier. [A new Hidden Scenario has arrived!]
Actually, I'm not sure if he enhanced his body again or returned to his normal body (after physical enhancement to save Yoo Joonghyuk) but yeah, his shoulders did grow wider and his height grew, so Kim Dokja did get wider shoulders, a more muscular body, and taller.
(Wiki says he's 184cm, so maybe he grew to the same height as Yoo Joonghyuk)
Anndddd Kim Dokja bed position aside, if because of saving Yoo Joonghyuk he grew to the same height as Yoo Joonghyuk, or even to just advance, it is...sweet. Since Kim Dokja always imitated Yoo Joonghyuk and would pretend to be Yoo Joonghyuk so he could face and overcome anything and even marvelled at the muscles when he took over Yoo Joonghyuk's body.
He wasn't thinking, he just wanted to save Yoo Joonghyuk when he enhanced his physical stats but, it's sweet and nice for Kim Dokja, he gained a similar physique to Yoo Joonghyuk whom he so admired and pretended to be.

Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint Thoughts, Chapters 1-100
I actually had a really hard time getting through the beginning of ORV since it’s building to emotional pay-offs VERY slowly. The first 100 chapters are a bit of a blur for me, but I already wrote my thoughts for Chapters 101-150 so. Uh. Here’s my even more biased than usual thoughts
Likes
Jung Heewon. She was my guiding light of having a clear and distinct personality right from the start.
I want Lee Gilyoung’s ability so fucking bad. Do you understand how badly I blacked out with jealousy once I learned about it?
I think Yoo Joonghyuk was the first person to voluntarily tell Kim Dokja his attribute, or, at the very least, the vibe was that most were keeping their attributes, skills, sponsor, etc. a secret for tactical advantages. That scene made more of an impact due to this, and I enjoyed Yoo Joonghyuk genuinely being a good teacher.
Speaking of, I'm genuinely fond of how Kim Dokja’s kind of a loser at times. He’s got tons of flaws that I am unfortunately tuned into as well as my own. I also think it’s meaningful in how Han Sooyoung is the one who constantly calls him out on his attempts to be an omniscient reader/schemer.
Yoo Sangah choosing to save and believe in others because she was saved and believed in (Chapter 46, Chapter 95). Han Donghoon’s belief in people with wall as a way of understanding (Chapter 60). Yoo Joonghyuk’s refusal to give up (Chapter 82). Kim Dokja’s casual admittance that WOS was “ruined” by surviving alone (Chapter 31). Kim Dokja wanting to see the epilogue (Chapter 42).
“I believe in you more than the future that hasn’t come yet.” - Kim Dokja to Shin Yoosung, Chapter 97
Destroying the Absolute Throne & that one anti-grind set line:
"Working up to build up history to become a constellation and then building up narratives to become narrative-grade constellations… then what? The higher the sky, the brighter the star? How long will you continue using the descendants of this land for your own sake?”  Kim Dokja, Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, Chapter 72
Scamming 👍
Dislikes
I know why Kim Dokja did it, and me disliking it adds credit to the story itself since I believe it’s supposed to be part of Kim Dokja’s moral complexity, but I did not like killing off Kim Namwoon, even if I agree with adding into the story itself. It’s not the fault of ORV but of Kim Dokja, in my opinion, for killing a 17-year-old AFTER you’d already found a work-around. I just don’t think it’s justifiable, and I did kind of hate him for a bit ngl (unfortunately, some of the reasons I disliked him were because I saw my own flaws in him, so it’s just a never ending cycle 😞)
The tentacle mpregging of Han Myungoh was funny and shocking at first, but, uh. Just personally not a fan of forced pregnancy on anyone, regardless of gender or what kind of person they are.
A lot of plot lines and characters just felt like they dropped off or didn’t really start. I think it will be much better as I read more, but the first 100 chapters are very plot-heavy & I just. could not connect or get into a lot of it due to the lack of insight into other characters, but that may also just be me

16 for the ask game
what part in orv made you realise it was gonna be a favourite?
definitely the disaster of floods arc. it was when it was from enjoyable and kinda fun to 'OH! oh this is actually genuinely interesting!' and i started reading it non-stop.
up until then pretty much everything had been going kim dokja's way, even when something went wrong he had a back-up plan - it felt a bit boring. there was no sense of danger or anything because he would make it out fine (<- clueless). but he wanted to save disaster shin yoosung, and i wanted him to save her, and he was so so close, and he failed! at least in the moment <(:3)
then the bit after w paul is so cathartic after that loss too. then he gives the coins back when the whole time hes been so 'haha im not a good person i'm just doing this for coins teehee' and it feels like one of the first times u get a glimpse behind the facade... OUGH.
i always feel crazy saying it gets good 100 chapters in but like. it was already good it just gets GOOD.

syswitz industrial complex... run that by me one more time
damn human life is just like hell, ive been saying this
195 demon trains? i know all about those
complete ur scheme. say somthing cool. pass out. kdj ur self parody at this point
rotation: recency bias is a hell of a thing. i want to partially tie up the parenting stuff with noting how often the constellation incarnation relationship was considered parental, how kdj views them (and indeed how weve seen quite a few be) really cruel, or exploitative, and well thats fitting for him to see that as parental isnt it. but then also. he has kids in his own care, and one is literally his incarnation. frankly im interested in both how attacking and dethroning gods is gonna impact his own godhood deal, his own parenting, and his view of his mothers job of parenting him
im not sure if i have any particular takes here but let it be know kdj is a bastard and a scoundrel and i shall not miss him. not from this distance. no but god that was a classic really jerk move level manipulation. need to re-calibrate the dials. whats worse is at this point i think he can fully understand how much emotional damage hes putting his loved ones through.
Also did you know we live in a society. this one is pretty nascent so far but the breaking of the Seoul dome is reminding us of normal human society, and its flaws, and with the demonic realm, blatantly stated, we live in hell on earth.

tweeted this already but i’m feeling extremely unhinged and vulnerable atm, as illustrated in vivid detail below the cut
began reading orv like two weeks ago bc my brother was like ‘can you please read the novel faster so i can find out what happens next [after the latest webtoon update]’ and what am if not an older sibling so I Was Like Okay. biggest mistake of my life. (also the juxtaposition of me reading orv out of love and indulgence, technically, and the inherent thematic grounds of it are not lost to me and i think the hindsight is what makes everything more potent here)
so yes, i’m not too far ahead actually. i’m @ ch 100 something. i actively seek spoilers bc that’s how i keep myself interested in things. i didn’t actually think i’d like it as much as i do atm. and well.
i can’t extrapolate on how i’m feeling about what’s going to happen but i do want to talk about how i’m feeling on what has already happened and like. GOD. HAVE THINGS HAPPENED.
kim dokja. he’s soooooooooo i think it’s impossible to talk about him isolated from all the people who make him who he is bc he is just That person, see? dokja with sangah on the subway, w gilyoung and hyunsung. dokja who is like ‘i’m only keeping them alive to earn coins and keep my reputation blessed in front of all the constellations’ but also, regardless, still does his level best to get them all through the multiple qualms they find themselves in -- dokja who’d rather it be him than them, if it does come down to choosing not just bc he understands where joonghyuk went wrong as the protagonist but also bc he values companionship (??) he is such a tightly wounded character that it’s kind of like..... tbh.... like a thread unravelling the more time we spend in his presence. orv is written in undeniable detail and the character development happens in such little spoons of progress that it’s kind of.... u don’t even know when this character went from being person A to person B (case in point: jung minseob and lee sungkook who went from begrudging acceptance of dokja to bold admiration before the signs became obvious)
and he just has that kind of effect on people. most people who agree to be with him end up actually, honestly, liking him. i can’t put into words or unpack his character properly enough to unspool why i think that is but just know that i see it, i see the diplomacy and the kindness and i see why he, as a figurehead, is well-liked (i think the attribute king of no killing actually suits him sooooo much).
also the way he is just. resourceful, smart enough to be reliable, understanding what he can do and what he can’t do. i have neverrrrr been good at describing characters as i see them in my mind and i am not going to be good at it now but i really like dokja a lot? as a reader and as the protagonist of the novel that i’m reading, he’s just as easy to identify with as he is to admire.
i also think a lot about him with gilyoung and yoosung. i think a lot about how he does actively care for them, how much they trust him. it’s just. neat. the effect he has on these children and all.
(i keep thinking about that one scene in the chungmuro station scenario where they had to survive the night -> how joonghyuk took the last hidden green room after dokja promised to keep gilyoung safe, how they said at the same time: give me the child / take the child at least. i think about that a lot.)
and then with yoosung too, more as the catastrophe than as the child. even as the child though, when she asks him to kill her and he says no. when her future self climbs out of the meteorite as a catastrophe, even then. he refuses to kill her and it means so much to him bc all she ever wanted to do was live. i can’t even begin to think about dokja and yoosung bc it makes me want to DIE.......
(i also think about the younger yoosung watching her older self wreak havoc and understanding that this is why people wanted her dead, understand what it meant when she asked dokja if she was going to grow up into a bad person and how he’d replied to it. I KEEP THINKING.)
(also the anger.... me @ me ‘yoosung’s anger at joonghyuk is so interesting bc that means whether it all goes right or whether it all goes wrong, dokja could also just as easily be at the other end of it’ and hmm... it’s interesting! something about how fathers and daughters, maybe.)
i also cannot think about han sooyoung for too long or i go into self destructive blank extremities like wdym (AND THIS IS A MAJOR SPOILER) like wdym. she loved dokja more than the world. fuck off. i actually won’t talk about han sooyoung at all until i reach that point in the novel just bc i will explode if i don’t have all the facts (which i do, which are: she loves him)
same goes to yoo joonghyuk. isolation is a disease luv [i actually have a lot to say about him but once again, i’d rather wait for all the facts] [i love how he and dokja are going until now though. it’s very. fascinating] [“you killed my companion” = bro glaring daggers at him every second dokja was alive. yeah. potent]
anyway.

⸢And everyone lived happily ever after.⸥ I always hated that phrase. However, the current me dearly wished for that phrase to become true. [Constellation, 'Demon King of Salvation' has reached his ■■.] [You have become the 'Oldest Dream'.] The disappearing lights in the distance resembled the Constellations that still remembered me. And with that, my endless voyage got underway. [Your ■■ is 'Eternity'.]
Tumblr media
I was this close to making a reaction post about the supposed "miracle" that happened and why the worldline wasn't collapsing despite Oldest Dream no longer dreaming.
I mean, I was certain it was because Dokja was maintaining the dream and maybe he himself hadn't realized it yet, what with him literally being Oldest Dream. Guess he had one final trick up his sleeve.
I will say that I'm super amused that my theory of him being an avatar and not knowing it was apparently 100% correct but in a manner I completely did not expect. If I have to pick, I wanna say that the moment he chose to break himself apart was right here:
That left only three people behind. "Kim Dokja." It was unknown who among Han Sooyoung and Yoo Joonghyuk called that name out first. The former asked with a questioning pair of eyes. "We are getting off together, right?" [Someone has activated 'Lie Detection Lv… '] That prompted Kim Dokja to smirk softly. "Of course. We should." ['Lie Detection' has confirmed 'Kim Dokja's' words as truth.] "Let's go."
Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky. Dokja scheming until the very last second. Sacrificing himself for his companions One. Last. Time.
Though not as much of a sacrifice as before; he'll still get to "read" about them just like he loves and technically he will also get to live with everybody in a big house just like he wanted. So while part of me is clenching my heart, it's overall a happy ending.
And I looooove that we've circled back to Dokja's ■■ and why it has both the meaning of Eternity and Final Chapter.
I'll admit that I'm still a little fuzzy on what exactly happened with Secretive Plotter, the 999ths and Oldest Dream. I guess they reached the epilogue of their stories and this is the epilogue of Dokja's story? So now they're off in an entirely different worldline once again?
And it seems we have 34 chapters of epilogues to go through now! As well as ongoing side stories! The latter of which I still need to figure out if anyone is currently translating into English.
I'll admit when I heard that ORV had ongoing side stories I wasn't certain what exactly they'd be about but it appears we've still got a lot to wrap up even after the happy ending and you can't tell me that at least in one future side story (or maybe one of these epilogues) Dokja doesn't meet himself again or at least realize that he's missing half his memories.
...Or perhaps his companions will realize something fishy is going on, what with living right beside him and Dokja not remembering a whole 50% of his life. Hmmm.
A tale of this new world continued to flow on. But then, just as the subway's doors closed, Han Sooyoung looked behind her with a slightly unsure, hard-to-read face of someone that left something behind. Even Yoo Joonghyuk looked back, too. The only person who didn't was Kim Dokja. Han Sooyoung and Yoo Joonghyuk's gazes ran into each other, and they began growling at the same time. "What you looking at?!" "I should ask you that, you basta…"
Well, if nothing else, I do dearly wish to see more of these three idiots together. I love that both of them refused to get off the train until they were certain Dokja was coming with them and they both seemed to sense that they'd just lost something.
And I do wonder how exactly the world is going to go on after all of this mess and if they really will try to take Joonghyuk's sword from him. (Not a good idea.)
I mean, they seem to still have all of their abilities and stats? I think? So they're just supposed to live in normal, modern day Korea as if nothing happened while having superpowers??? And I assume most of the world's population is gone unless that was miraculously rewritten.
Or...???
Guess I'll find out.

Things I can’t wait to see in the webtoon (SPOILER WARNING FOR THE WHOLE SERIES)
In no particular order:
“Eat dirt, Yoo Joonghyuk”
Dokja scamming 50+ Constellations at the same time, gets marked for death, then continues to scam them for more money
“Come, Steel Sword.” Literally picks up Lee Hyunsung and swings him.
Secretive Plotter’s arc
Local Squid dies so much he gets adopted by the Gods of Death. They also tried to matchmake him with other characters, including Bihyung 😅
The mutual identity thefts between KDJ and YJH. One notable mention is the two of them conquering industrial complexes in each other’s name.
KDJ, YJH and HSY being the snarkiest trio
Journey to the West Remake, where there’s cannibal Murim dumplings, secret identites, and KDJ spending a whole paragraph describing how handsom YHJ is and if you’re not attracted to him then there’s something wrong with you
URIEL!!! HUIWON!! EVERYONE IN KIM DOKJA’S COMPANY. BADASS WOMEN AND CHILDREN! FULLY FLESHED OUT CHARACTERS WITH THEIR OWN MOTIVES AND GOALS!!!
Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung being 100% down for murder
Chinese dress and garter belt
No matter which regression, every version of Yoo Joonghyuk will get sooooo attached to Kim Dokja
Our badass Queen Yoo Sangah grabbing Yoo Joonghyuk’s head and slamming it against a wall. She also briefly became God and trolls important Constellations.
The 0th round, the 999th round, and the 1863th round 😭😭
Finding out the truth behind tls123 (by the way, I heard that tls spells ‘god’ on the Korean keyboard. So it means god123. Take it as you will). Seeing why tls123 wrote the ‘Ways of Survival’ made me cry 😥
Kim Namwoon builds a Gundam
Have we discussed how messed up it was that KDJ’s own mother killed him (knowing he’ll survive) because she wanted to be the person he loves most? And she dislikes YJH because she’s the only one who figures out who KDJ truly loves the most?
Biyoo! The fluffiest, most adorable daughter/Twitch streamer
When KDJ dies for YJH, and nobody told YJH that Dokja can resurrect so he went crazy for a bit. He also called KDJ his companion for the first time. Honestly Dokja HOW COULD YOU MISINTERPRET EVEN THIS??!
The many times Kim Dokja’s Company went full yandere and locks him up to prevent him going off on another suicidal scheme
When it turns out that KDJ’s reckless and suicidal nature isn’t just for jokes, but stems from his low self-worth and inability to accept and recognize other people viewing him as someone worth protecting. When we get to see more of his backstory and realize that the freaking Apocalypse ends up being the happiest time of his life compared to what came before. In this essay I will-
The unpredictability of each scenario. The plot twists are amazing, and the story goes in very creative direction. And the meta and time shenanigans makes my brains hurt.
999th Uriel meets our Uriel and bluescreens after viewing all the shipping in this timeline
HSY constantly dissing on the Way of Survival’s writing
Secretive Plotter losing against KDJ and YJH because YJH’s wearing KDJ’s coat and he’s not 😂
