When the first wave of Inscribed showed up in Lexical Earth, what effect did that have on modern organized religion in your world?

Ohhhh I like this question. All cards on table it isn't exactly something I've thought about before, but my spirit does produce an answer.

The timeframe between when the first wave started and became visible to the wider world and when the Wyrd masquerade broke is very small. It's also more fair to say that the War Against Heaven had a larger impact on this matter as it forced the religious population of Earth to either go join their deities in Heaven, abandon their faith, or for a small population develop new beliefs regarding the Wyrd. Most popular among those belief is that the Wyrd is not divine, the god of Heaven is a deceiver, and that true divinity has yet to reveal itself. Needless to say most of earth remaining religious population are either skeptic believers, or transactional worshipers.

But you asked about the First Wave, so lets expand on that. I imagine it had a very similar, but smaller, effect that the War had. Faiths either had to accept them as divine or self made saints, or denounce them as having deceitful power. First Wavers being who they are would be all too happy to feed into the perspective of "divine saviors" or "hellish deceivers" depending on the inscribed. I imagine at least one, likely more, cults were started surrounding specific First wavers.

This ask has definitely inspired me to make a few named Firs wavers, which I'll get around to posting about once I've got something good made. Thanks for the ask Fren!

have you watched sf8: joan’s galaxy? If not I would highly recommend it’s a one-off episode kinda similar to san junipero. Everything about the show from the leading ladies, the chemistry between them, the storyline and the aesthetic was so beautiful. If you have 50 minutes to spare i would love for you to check it out and hear your thoughts about it

Actually, let me go with this one first because I genuinely watched this yesterday just to be able to finally answer this.

So first, someone had sent an ask about this ep before and my response wasn't far from what I still think, specifically this: "a large part of why I loved San Junipero was because of its canon f/f nature, and the happy ending, without either of those I’d regard it quite differently."

I suppose the ending' here is open to interpretation and honestly it would be more likely than not that they'll end up meeting again, but the framing is more that these two people met and had a profound connection and impact on each other's lives and that's the most important part, whatever happens after? And I just want them to continue to stay together, that's the important part to me.

Come to think of it, maybe that's why there are such different responses to media, because there are two types of people: those who can appreciate the strong connection however it ends and that's why they love Portrait and THOI and Bly and then the other type for whom that's not enough. I'm squarely in the second category, lol.

In terms of canonicity...I suppose they went as far as they could? I'll take this shot from the start of their night out as a sign, lol:

And that night was lovely, the symbolism behind it, both being interested in aerospace but due to the environment never even being able to see actual stars, and then with their class assignment... Well. And even the excerpt from the book actually also reflecting them, I was mentally creating the gifset paralleling the guy who saw the woman from outside the store and went in with them.

I'm not gonna deny it WAS a beautiful ep, and I did like it. And to those people who like the first kind of story, definitely a great rec for them. For the second type, maybe a bit less so, but it can easily be headcanonned as happyish, there's nothing to keep them apart. In fact, there's scope for so much more, especially given where Joan ended up and the impact that could have. Ultimately, I'm not unhappy to have watched, so thank you and to the previous anon for the rec!

I’ve heard of people having awful nightmares, I’ve never experienced one myself but from people I’ve encountered, I hear they can really shake you up. I’m sorry that you’re feeling awful but I will give you a hug to help put your nerves at ease.. I understand what it’s like to be on high alert, take it from me, having your defenses up isn’t a bad thing. Especially after something like a nightmare that obviously has you on edge.. Creative Problem Solving Interviews

Interviewee 1: Thoi (Operation Director)

“I have an operations background so most of my ideas are driven by the need to improve systems and processes. The key motivator always lies in improving the way people work and it starts with observing both high and low level details and how they impact the effectiveness and efficiencies in an operation. This can be as simple as making minor adjustments to the work environment to overhauling an entire system. Ideas typically spring from direct engagement with people and tasks. This plays a key part in countering a common obstacle in introducing new ideas - people’s tendency to resist change or disruption to their work. Having actual firsthand experience leads to a more thoughtful approach which help removes anxiety toward change.

The process starts with identifying a need or inefficiency through active observations and engagement. Next is the inquiry phase, which can be either formal or informal, from water cooler conversations to conducting a structured survey. Constructive feedback lays the foundation for a smoother implementation as it engages and prepares people from the start. This is followed by research to identify the most efficient and cost-effective implementation such leveraging existing or introducing new technology, systems or processes. Changes can often bring confusion, so it is also critical to map out tasks, support, resources and a timeline in a critical path (critical steps needed to achieve an end goal). A critical path helps facilitate communication and collaboration between all stakeholders and can be scalable depending on the scope of the ideas and implementation. After implementation, further observations are needed to ensure that ideas generated intended results and whether adjustments are needed to drive further improvement.”

Interviewee 2: Sasha (Chief Design Officer)

“I get inspired from reading, listening to podcasts, watching videos like TED talks, having discussions or conversations with people, and learning something new… And I generate ideas from being inspired or challenged. I don’t have a strong technical background, so when I face an obstacle of coming up with solutions for a very technical problem, I would just ask for help. In my company, we encourage people to ask for help because teamwork is the key in any business models. And building that trust and transparency helps build a harmonious work culture.

My process varies because I have different types of problems at work. Sometimes it’s more complicated and time consuming, sometimes it needs to be on a schedule, and we have to see immediate results after the process. But identifying the problem is always the first step for me. What’s working, what’s not working, why it’s not working… Asking the right questions is helpful to identify and define a problem. You can have very generic questions and very specific questions. It’s good to have both. After that, I would assess the problem from all applicable aspects. To just name a few… What type of resources/talents/team do I need? What’s my budget? How long should it take? What’s the expected outcome? What are some of the risks? You can’t always be sure about the “accuracy” of those estimations. But it’s crucial to create a preliminary plan. “I usually would create a mind map and start by asking questions such as: What is the problem? Who’s the client/customer/user? What are some of the difficulties? What are some of the unmet desires? In the beginning of the process, I feel like I’m an investigator who tries to gather information, put pieces together and find out the potential ‘suspects’ or ‘motives.’ I often look at the problem in a bigger scope, from a market standpoint to understand the needs and demands, customers, vendors, competitions…

My process for problem solving usually has the following steps: 1. Identifying the problems; 2. Creating a strategy; 3. Finding the right resources; 4. Working out the problems; 5. Evaluating the results and making adjustments; 6. Implementation.”

"Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! Today I want to talk about religion. How is religion viewed in your world? Is it a prominent feature in people's lives, or are there people who don't really practice it? Does religion influence anything? Can people worship other god(s)? Is atheism a thing?"

Even though my current/active wip is Equ, THoI will have a better answer.

Religion in Altmera is split. For humans, religion is very similar to our world (writer's cop out). For elves, religion is very major. There are different groups (almost factions) that celebrate/worship the 5 different gods. The average elf knows, believes, and respects the existence of the gods (all 5), but the more devout usually pick one and devote their entire lives to their deity. Religion goes hand-in-hand with magic, as they believe the gods gave it to them, am esteemed gift showing them they are more favored than the humans.

ROBERT KIRKMAN AND THE END OF AN ERA

Walking Dead was the first comic book I read.

Before that, I mostly knew comics from 90s cartoons I watched when I was a kid.

I would read about comics on wikipedia and get excited, the fact that Spider-Man and the X-Men shared the same universe was REAL NEAT in a way that I couldn’t quite explain, the idea of Big Events like House of M and Secret Wars was REALLY COOL to me, but I didn’t actually know how to go about reading those. I bought a couple issues off ebay, I wanted to like comic books, but I didn’t have enough context to really get into it. I had no idea that comics came out every Wednesday, or that there were options outside of MArvel and DC.

I was in college, working a shitty retail job, with a manager who saw through the veil. Life is meaningless, we’re all gonna die, humans are caterpillars with wasp eggs in our brain.

(this was before zombies or superheroes were cool, yes I know how hipster that sounds, whatever it was the early oughties)

So when this coworker pitches WALKIND DEAD to me I am ALL EARS. He tells me to check out the first trade paperback. I didn’t know what that meant, but I went to BARNES AND NOBLE because that was still a thin. This was the description on the back:

and yes I know how edgelordy it seems now, but back then THIS GOT ME, this tapped into a frustration or frascination or SOMETHING that nothing else ever had in the same way

SO YEAH I GO AHEAD AND BUY THOIS FOR NINE DOILLARS AND NINETY NINE SENCSE

I read that first trade, which in hindsidght collects the first 6 issues, and then I’m at a loss. How to read more?? I wait for the next trade, and the next trade. I would go into barnes and noble every couple months and check if the next book was there (again, this was before I knew what I was doing, before everything was shoved down your throats, back when Walking Dead was something that nobody else heard about, yes I know I sound like a grouchy old man)

At this point I’m living in the cornfields of Lancaster county. I’m like 19, not sure if I should drop out of college or not.

I decided to Google the author Robert Kirkman, and I found out he wrote a bunch of other books. He wrote Wolfman and Brit and Battle Pope, the list goes on. WAIT A SECOND YOU CAN JUST BUY COMIC BOOKS OFF THE INTERNET?

So down the rabbit hole I go. Of course I stumble upon INVINCIBLE which is THE BEST SUPERHERO COMIC IN THE UNIVERSE so I start picking up those trades. This leads me to other trades, I read through WATCHMEN and DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and ULTIMATES and NIGHTLY NEWS. It’s all fuckin really exciting because these are some of the first comics I’ve read, and I’m going in completely fucking blind. HERE HAVE A NEW ART FORM WHY NOT READ JUST THE BEST THINGS FROM HISTORY HERE THEY ALL ARE AT ONCE

At this point it’s like 2009 and I’ve graduated college, I live in Maryland now, and maybe I’m going through some shit and one day when I’m getting a California Tortilla burrito I decide to step into a comic shop

“uhhh I’ve been getting the Walking Dead trades and the Invincible collections, I’ve read up to this point, how do I start reading the single issues or whatever you call them?”

Fucking honestly great job @bigplanetcomics in Silver Spring MD. Super welcoming to a newbie, and honestly helped me through some shit

They point me to the single issues of Walking Dead and Invincible. For a while I go there monthly, pick up the single issues, get my hair cut at Floyds, and eat a burrito for lunch. I start picking up other issues, the habit is certainly forming

This doesn’t mean anything to you but that is a TIME IN MY LIFE that I guess I’m being nostalgic about now. This was how I discourved comic books, mixed in with learning how to be an adult in a city that didn’t feel like home

Eventually I move to Virginia, it’s 2012 now and at this point I’m going to Big Planet Comics Vienna every Wednesday (that’s when new comis books come out, WHO KNEW, honestly they don’t tell you that and THEY REALLY SHOULD). I’m still picking up WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE, but I’m also picking up pretty much any new #1 that comes out, for better and often for worse

if you hand me an old issue of WALKING DEAD or INVINCIBLE right now, I can tel you what was going on in my life when that issue came out. What girl was I dating, what was I doing at my job, where was I eating lunch on Saturdays. Again, not super interesting to other people, but for me each issue is a window into my life that month, it’s 22 pages of who I used to be

The point I want to make but haven’t yet is that these books lead me to OTHER BOOKS. Robert Kirkman was always very open about WAlking Dead being a GATEWAY DRUg: “The Walking Dead, although I love it, is far from the best comic being published today.” so without Walking Dead, I would not have read PRETTY DEADLY or ALEX + ADA or RESIDENT ALIEN or EAST OF WEST or SQUIRREL GIRL or MS MARVEL or LUMBERJANES

Fast forward a few years, through some fuckin chapters in my biography, it’s 2016 now and I’m about to move to California. This is going to sound dumb but I only cried twice when I was moving. Once when I said goodbye to the girl I thought I would marry, and once when I asked for my pull list from Big Planet Comics for the last time.

Before I move to California, one of the first things I do is look up the local comic shop. I find one that’s between my apartment and my job. I go there the first Wednesday after I move, and I’ve gone there every Wednesday since then.

Whatever else is going on in my life, picking up my books on Wednesday has been a part of the routine for the last 10 years or so. And for that entire time, WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE have been with me through it all.

SO FUCK ME RIGHT when Robert Kirkman stabs me through the heart and tells me that INVINCBLE is ending. THAT LAST ISSUE IS like jumping ahead 50 years and looking through a photo album of the best friends you made in college, living life, finding meaning, and moving on without you. RYAN OTTLEY’s art has been a part of my ACTUAL FUCKING LIFE for so long that MY EYES AREN’T SURE WHAT TO DO WITHOUT HIM (other than to buy Spider-Man).

But Walking Dead is still going strong, right? WRONG. Extremely recently, Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn PULLED A FAST ONE ON US and ENDED WALKING DEAD without announcing it ahead of time.

I bought issue 193, thinking it was a regular issue. It was not. It was the end.

I had no idea this was coming.

And as part of that issue, one of the characters made this speech:

PLEASE UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH OF A MOMENT THIS WAS FOR ME

this was the excerpt I read in barnes and noble when I was 19 living in Lancaster not sure if I should drop out of college, passing through the years of monthly comic shop trips by myself in Maryland, through Virginia and lending out books to anyone who would listen, to California where my comic shop now has palm trees and I now have gray hairs and eye crinkles

Since I started reading Walking Dead and Invincible, zombies became overdone, superheroes went from “Jessica AlbaFantatsic Four movie” to Avengers Endgame. I went from terrified 19 year old to crinkly-eyed 33 year old. It’s hard not to look back on that transition and not feel.... sad

Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard and Ryan Ottley you sons of a bitches. I know it’s basic to like zombies and superheroes now, but YOU GOT ME THROUGH SOME THINGS and I honestly feel... thankful for the time we spent together. I know you’re working on other stuff now, and I’m excited for it. I’m also excited about other books like GIDEON FALLS and EAST OF WEST and PAPER GIRLS and SAGA. But I’m going to mourn this end of an era.

tl;dr: Invincible and Walking Dead are over. So are my twenties.

Not yet, no! Now that it’s finally here, I feel oddly reluctant to sit down and start. Sometimes hype makes me really want to watch something, sometimes I’m scared to start and be disappointed or worse, love it and have no more of it. Also, you know. It’s a movie. I still haven’t watched A Secret Love either. (Or The Favourite or Carol or The Handmaiden. :x) But I hope you enjoyed it!

I just watched the half of it and it wasn’t bad? I mean towards representation is not the best movie ever but it was nice and like the way it was shot was great?

The half of it vaguely spoilerish if you haven’t seen it yet... I am so glad I found out ahead of time that this wasn’t a lesbian rom com Bc whew I woulda been pissed watching it had I not known that. As it was, I was honestly kinda bored a lot of the movie. I love Alice Wu and she made very lovable characters in Ellie & Aster, but this movie had so much focus on Paul. I’m sick of white boys dominating narratives honestly. He wasn’t a fresh character at all but he was still so much the focus.

These two came in so close together this morning, they made me laugh. You’re like two sides of the same coin, all, yeah, I guess it was okay??

To the first anon, heh, you seem unsure? You can like it or even love it without any issue! It DOES hit a lot of rep points, unless it’s willfully apathetic or offensive, I feel like you’re free to enjoy what it is more than add disclaimers for what it isn’t. If you enjoyed it, that’s awesome.

To the second anon, well, I get it. Maybe that’s why I’m not in a rush to watch. I’m not currently in the mood for a story that is basically, in Wu’s own words, an attempt to reach out to people who made Trump happen. And okay, that’s not fair, it’s so many more things, a coming of age story for an Asian American lesbian teen, the story of a second gen immigrant and her dad in a small American town, among other things, friendship between seemingly fundamentally different people, how to grow and learn past learned biases, even the effects of religion on Aster. And heck, even if it were just the first thing, that’d be an admirable goal, let alone the many other things it manages to be to so many people. I’m not saying it has to be something different.

But if this movie has two main roles, to teach empathy to an external group and to be relatable to an inner group, it is...neither of those things to me. I’m a Southeast Asian American who grew up abroad, my experiences are very different from Ellie’s and while I have a bunch of guy friends, I don’t care about Paul. Which will probably change when I actually watch, the way I love Dutch and Johnny in Killjoys. Or currently, Isaac on Vagrant Queen. I end up liking a lot of male characters, tbh. I dunno. I guess it’s what the focus is Presented as. Ellie may be the lead of THOI, but a movie’s inherent lack of time forces Paul and their dynamic to be so central, and a part of me does resent that a bit. It’s sold as a different kind of love story, their dynamic itself is the main character.

It could be a combination of many things, a difference between what I want and what it is, the fact that it’s a movie and just didn’t have the time I like to develop. I really liked In My Skin, a TV show, and that wasn’t particularly relatable, I guess I’m more open to stories when the female lead is front and center in every way. The story is about her. It’s like in Stumptown, I FAR preferred the episodes that treated Dex as the main than those where Grey or Hoffman had some adventure and Dex was just, like, there.

But annnyway. It’s fine, right, we don’t have to like everything. I get the FOMO, something like this is so big and the f/f community’s still so small, it’s hard to ignore it and everyone around us engaging with it in some way. But aren’t we reaching a point where we don’t have to like something because it’s f/f but can go on to something else? Well. I say that as someone who prefers TV to movies, because damn, pickings are slim if you want happy central f/f in movies. Honestly, that’s really what it comes down to, the issue isn’t this movie but that there aren’t enough f/f movies out there. Every one of these discussions boils down to that basic point, that this one movie shouldn’t be responsible for everything this industry’s failed to do. You don’t have to like this movie, but you should have the opportunity to watch more than one happy ending every few years.

I saw a bunch of people saying that thoi is not gonna be happy ending or they're not gonna be together in the end and like, every since THE GODDAMN RUMORS of this movie started I'm invested so like I just needed to say that bc it will fuckin crush me p.s: I'm in love with your fics

i trust alice wu with my little gay-ass heart, and i too have been invested since the very beginning. they even say in the trailer that not every love story is a romance and i'm here to say that IF WE GET A SLICE OF LIFE/COMING OF AGE STORY ABOUT A WLW AND THE HIMBO THAT WIGGLES HIS WAY INTO HER HEART TO BECOME HER BEST FRIEND, I AM HERE FOR IT.

do i wish that ellie and aster would get together in the end, yeah! that would fulfill so many hopes and dreams and fantasies that i'd had as a high schooler. but do i also wish that i'd had one person who'd seen me and made me feel less alone as the sole gaysian in a white-ass high school, also yeah.

also, this movie is gonna have top-tier gay yearning and i feel fucking seen with ellie chu, so i count that as a win. just because she might not get the girl in the end doesn't mean it's not a happy ending. i don't think the people who are unhappy about it remember that.
