So I was looking for tags on the cdrama "The Mermaid's Pearl" but could not find one. I wonder why is that?
Admittedly, this one is not on par with most dramas I watch. The rating on the internet is also low. I think I know why.
But if you're looking for cuteness and fluff with scenes that make you smile like hot chocolate and if you don't care much about actresses crying without tears (aka not so great acting) and bad directing skills and cuts, this could be just it.
On to how I found this. So I was looking for a quick cdrama to binge. When too tired afterwork, I have this guilty pleasure of reading through plots, watching the first few eps. Then when I get the gist, I'll leisurely fast forward or move eps looking for cute or fun scenes. You know, like living leisurely through the characters (for the sake of feeling things and pretending you got a life outside work and home).
Plot wise, tbh, I skipped a lot on this one. The plot itself is pretty simple. Mermaid girl (FL) left water to look for her kidnapped father. The ML is a rich young man who is known as a detective. He is also sick and they believe finding a mermaid will help cure him. She agreed because he has a lot of food (being rich and all) and he also might be able to help her find her dad.
Suspecting she's a mermaid (kinda hard not to) when she literally threw her pearls at him when they first met, he decided to keep her by his side.
So murder mysteries happen along the way and the guy has a fangirl/fiancee who wants to marry him. The emperor is also looking for a way to live abnormally long and orders people to go on expeditions to look for mermaids to aid that quest.
That is basically the whole gist of it.
Cuteness wise, can I just say I love and adore how the ML cares for the FL? Like, she's like a fluffy bunny and he's the master who takes care of her. They are so cute together and he also is sensitive to his own feelings so there's not much waiting. Their scenes make me laugh and just smile, thinking I want to be loved the way he loves her. : ) 🩷 Plus, it's comedy XD
At first he was telling her to stay away from him because she has no boundaries. But all too soon, he just came to accept how trusting and comfortable she is with him. He also gets jealous easily lol.
In this scene for instance, she literally just fell asleep using his hand as a pillow (like a cat) and he lets her. #Fluff
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Acting wise, the ML actor, Shi An, is actually pretty good. It's just that the cuts and the scenes they were acting in are really like you're watching students' made film where quality is not the focus. So tbh, I blame the director and writer and producers more than the actors. Or maybe, that is indeed their goal? Idk. If it is then they succeeded.
Watch it if you dare, but as I said, a lot of things about it are pretty crappy. So don't expect too much.
But bottomline, I still very much enjoyed the very short cute fluff scenes between the ML and FL. :) I even replay them (just the cute scenes) when I need a pick-me-up. So it isn't so bad. At least not for me.

my controversial aos hot takes after rewatching the entire show
not leo fitz & fitzsimmons friendly so you’ve been warned <3
jiaying lowkey had some points in season 2 but the writers had to turn her into a one-dimensional villain in order for daisy to completely side with shield at the end
also jiaying related, it made no sense for her to try and kill daisy. if anything, it would have made more sense for jiaying to kidnap her.
there was no point in building up so much hype for the “secret warriors” only for them to have like one actual mission
lance hunter is superior to leo fitz
people that don’t like daisy but stan bucky barnes just hate women and/or are racist (like c’mon anybody else see the similarities in their characters?)
jemma simmons didn’t have her own character after season 2. she was just used to prop fitz and all of her “Ultra Badass Moments” were the results of her looking for Fitz
there was literally no reason for everyone to hate on daisy being the director in 5b. she pretty much made all the same calls Coulson and Mack would, but no one gets onto them (in fact, coulson made a shit ton of risky, emotionally-driven decisions in season 2 and other than mack, no said anything about it)
the writers didn’t allow anyone to comfort daisy after fitz tortured her because they would have to face the fact that fitz isn’t a Good Person
Ward constantly blaming his family/brother for the way he is & Fitz throwing the blame back on Daisy for torturing her (bringing up how many times she “betrayed the team”) are parallels and no one ever talks about it
the minute daisy actually set boundaries for herself and doesn’t let herself take the blame for everything anymore is when everyone else calls her a “hard-ass”
as much as I enjoyed the show’s ending, the writers have practically been hinting since season 2 that daisy would start up her own version of Afterlife and I don’t get why that didn’t happen??
if the show wasn’t so inconsistent with daisy’s powers she would literally almost be unstoppable
fans saying fitz can’t be at fault for his actions because of his brain injury (when the show pretty much forgot about until s5) are ableist
also, saying fitz deserved just as much comfort as daisy did for what he did to her is just plain wrong and disgusting
i didn’t miss fitz’s presence at all in s7
The Fitzsimmons romance just got plain annoying after season 4
season 7 deke is the only tolerable deke
The Lash/Andrew arc made no sense
I hate ward by all means but his character in season 3 was just completely flat. he was just another one-dimensional villain
Fitz’s internal issues with “The Doctor” could’ve been an interesting story arc if it’s sole reason weren’t to torture Daisy
as much as i love philinda, i understand the season 7 ending they had and why they didn’t end up together (like, he’s a robot for fuck’s sake)
Fitz & Daisy could’ve been an amazing brotp if his character wasn’t completely butchered after s3.
i’ll probably reblog with more later but this is what i can think of for now:)

MY HERO ACADEMIA SEASON 4 EPISODE 2!
Ok, I’m super hyped for this season now. Crazyyyy shit went down and I have thoughts about it that some people might not like... or maybe they might understand why I feel that way? But anyways, let’s get into it...
- I’m liking the theme song more and more after every listen. It might eventually make my top three. Sorry, ‘The Day’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Swag. Overhaul. What a first entrance. It’s probably my favourite introduction to a villain so far besides that first full reveal of All for One. He’s just straight up pimpin’. There’s no other description. Especially with that coat.
Tumblr media
‘I DID NOT COME TO PLAY WITH YOU, HOES’
Also, the character music they gave him was dope! Up there with All for One’s theme. The shading and colour tint - and even the line art sometimes - in his scenes were all just beautiful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...Right. This is the moment I mostly wanted to talk about. I really loved getting this little snippet of a backstory from Magne. It honestly just made me want to find out more about her ideals and why she decided to join the League of Villains. We’re told that she basically found the League as somewhere she can comfortably belong... which I’m reading as she feels most comfortable being able to express herself as a transgender woman with the League rather than her being transgender in society.
Which makes me raise questions as to how the transgender community is looked at in the MHA universe. We know so far of one other transgender character, Tiger, and he didn’t choose a life of villainy (instead going in the complete opposite direction) and for the most part seems accepted by others, just feared cos of how tough he is lol. I just wanna know what other motivation Magne had for becoming a villain besides her new found family.
Anyways...
Tumblr media
...too bad we’re not gonna get that answer.
Anime is interesting. If this was a Marvel film or any other type of western media, directors and writers would be getting dragged for killing one of two transgender characters, just seconds after we get a backstory for her. And while I don’t think we should be dragging Horikoshi’s name through the mud, I do think it’s something we should at least acknowledge. Anime has never been politically correct and over the years and I find myself excusing a lot of stuff that goes on cos I don’t feel educated or experienced or even belonging enough to Japanese culture to really critique it. Plus, I’ve gotten lax about it cos overtime I’ve just shrugged it off as ‘anime be anime’.
It just felt unfortunate that we finally get this interesting backstory for this character and suddenly they’re offed. I get someone had to die to show Overhaul meant business but... it just felt... weird. Maybe that was the whole point? ...hm.
Tumblr media
The amount of blood. Brutal.
- I will say I’m not totally sold on Overhaul’s English VA. I think his germ freakout moment needed to be a bit more vocally dramatic to contrast his almost monotone and low and weirdly calm voice. Especially in the one scene where Overhaul is literally breaking out in hives.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would laugh at this if it weren’t so incredibly dark. God, I can’t wait to see more of Overhaul this season! He definitely seems like a contender and he doesn’t need over 100 quirks to prove it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I appreciate this weird, murderous, found family! It’d be sweet if they weren’t all so twisted.
Tumblr media
Why isn’t Bakugo allowed to do a work study? Is it cos he was kidnapped or is it cos he still needs to get his provisional licence? I’m guessing the latter. (I just wanted to acknowledge best boy cos I know he’s barely getting any screen time this half of the season).
Tumblr media
I love this small moment. I love how human he seems now that he’s locked in Small Might form. Oh, All Might... (when he dies, it’s gonna be a sad few months for me)
Tumblr media
BIG THREE. AND BEST BOIIIII
Tumblr media
...Dis boi. <3
- Also, I love the English VA for Mirio! His ‘AWWWW YEAHHH’, is one of my top moments this episode
- Mirio being All Might’s secret son and asking Izuku why he wants to be a hero. What a good boy! :’)
Tumblr media
I LOVE ME SOME DOMESTIC CLASS 1A! Having them move into dorms was the best autocorrect decision, I dunno why Horikoshi didn’t just make UA a boarding school in the first place. Especially as I find the reasoning for making them move into dorms a bit nonsensical but anyways.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The start of a beautiful and reluctant friendship. :)
Tumblr media
... ‘anime be anime’
- Also, is it just me or is she basically just a blue version of Cheelai from DBZ: Broly?
Tumblr media
Lol wtf?! There’s something fucked up about this, but without it going completely 18+ and I can’t put my finger on it exactly. ...‘Anime be anime’? 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m dyingggg. I hate how much I love this show haha
Overall, this was a dope episode. The first half was definitely better than the second half but it still was awesome and I just can’t wait till we get into the nitty gritty of this Overhaul arc. Shit’s about to go down!

Utawarerumono: The False Faces ep 13-25 Liveblog
Gonna just straight up do individual episode comments, since the second half is gonna be denser in content. As with the first half, this is a rewatch and will have spoilers for the games.
Opening Comments: Man there’s not much movement in the animation but its beautiful all the same.
Ep 13:
- *spit take* why are they sending Rulu? IDK if it was because the directors weren’t informed about the whole “baby of the family” detail because I can’t imagine Shis letting this happen
- Interesting how instead being of a secret force that Oshtoru sent, Haku and gang are now the accompanying force to Rulu and Atuy.
- I’ll be pleasantly surprised if Entua makes more sense in the anime than in the games
- oh wow Dekopompo is even worse in the anime, straight-up running off on his own.
Ep 14:
- I like how instead of Atuy catching the arrow the twins have a force field. Granted, it make Atuy even more of a non-entity
- the extreme long shots of the CGI soldiers are really nice. I don’t feel like we see the loss of formations as they come into contact with each other often in war anime
- why are the twins running like that - imo that way too much movement for dainty girls (maybe I’ve watched too much anime)
- wow they totally recontextualized retrieving Shinonon and cut down a lot of potential runtime.
- did they seriously remove Atuy’s bloodlust
- you know open-eyed Ougi is growing on me, him and Nosuri have such lovely eye color
- poor Maroro
Ep 15:
- I’m relieved that the adaptation art makes Raiko look less like Lelouch. Always seemed like lazy design to me, him and Mikazuchi look nothing alike.
- did they introduce the telepaths in MoD? I can’t remember.
- that triple-take of Zeguni dying was just silly. If it were one slice x3 it would have been fine but this... Oshtoru be flexing with that mountain.
- I never really felt calling Witsu an Eva was quite right but with the Akuruturuka.... yeah I see it.
- truly we are in the war arc proper now.
- Heh wouldn’t it have been interesting to have the proxies’ subservience kick in instead of having the twins shield Haku. Oh well missed opportunities. IMO it would have worked well with the accelerated timeline the anime needed to achieve.
- what is with the triple takes this episode
- ah haku wasn’t even able to save them gg
- post episode revisiting the VN comments:
they hint at the telepaths, and as I thought the Vurai razing the city wasn’t in the VN. It was a good showpiece and works with Vurai’s characterization, but messes with Haku’s as a cost - the VN suggests that Haku inherently can be ruthless (he suggests scapegoating Moznu for Anju’s kidnapping, which the anime totally skips over), while it looks like the anime is gonna use this mass destruction as the reason for steeling his heart. I can’t say I hate that the writers chose to have the main characters in the fray, but it definitely requires more suspension of disbelief that everyone got out okay compared to the VN.
- Interestingly we don’t see Oshtoru’s mech form at all. I do like the increased bro scenes between Mikazuchi and Oshtoru
Ep 16:
- Yeah we immediately feel the ripples of that last episode changing Haku’s trajectory... its a logical trajectory but... ugh. I’m not sure how I feel about such a contrary Haku. It wasn’t really a thing in the VN? So frustrating augh. Utawarerumono was never a story big on moralizing about war... and the anime writers aren’t doing a great job adding it in.
- I’m 99% sure they pulled some of Ukon’s lines for comforting Haku here from a conversation they had in the VN waaaayyy back around the gigiri fight, making the scene all the more frustrating. The concepts of powerlessness and loss of life is something that Haku had been introduced to the moment he woke up and had already been working on dealing with. I can’t say its an invalid take that he’d be shook over mass destruction (I mean, most people would) but it’s a sharp deviation from the VN.
- Oh wow they’re totally gonna retool the banquet to deal with haku’s trauma instead of him dealing with his memories of being the LAST OF HIS KIND aren’t they.
- yeah they did
- oh god don’t say the word seduce haku, rulu’s gonna die from blood loss
- lol i don’t remember the twins being tied up
- rulu is dead
- and now haku is dead too. I think only Ougi and Yakutowaruto escaped unscathed.
- this did give me the bro bonding that I had been missing in the show thus far. Not enough drinking scenes! like literally the VN is literally just baths and booze between the action lol
Ep 17:
- ah finally the flashback episode. lol all the crunchyroll comments are like “watch the first season”.
- haku calling his new buddies family... oof mito’s knowing gaze makes it all the much sadder
- Haku:”did you need to go that far” Mito: “lemme do it again with Tuskuru”
- hah “reposition your camera” nice, easy way to not show his face
- heh stares at your sister-in-law’s butt, that’s actually a pretty subtle hint without adapting any of the monologue from the VN that he kinda had feelings for her
- damn this is probably the most complete vision of the future we get in any medium
- hey to be fair the ameterasu blast was mutsumi and not exactly a product of mankind fighting each other - but it does go to show just how little Mito knew about what was actually going down
- to continue with my frustration, we see that haku is called out by his bro that he has a habit of “conceal don’t feel” so it makes his emo bit last episode even more jarring - though in hindsight I guess his depression comes less out of the blue for his friends now - its just that the reason is misattributed
- oof “make up for lost time”
- ooh I like the final scene with Woshis as the delegate to Tuskuru. The VN did fine without it but man what a cliffie for those watching the first time.
Ep 18:
- oof we’re not going to have any shinonon/kiwru antics are we
- man I can’t wait to see Benawi - he was my favorite chara in Uta1 after Touka
- wow they really did just ignore the fact that Kiwru is the prince of Ennakamuy and cut him out of the party
- dugh never mind I don’t like ougi’s open eyes here
- speaking of ougi they totally glossed over his role as reconnaissance
- and have they even mentioned that nosuri is trying to retake their clan’s name?
- cocopo still best bird
Ep 19:
- of course you’ll be sweaty haku, boro boro only wears that brown undershirt in tuskur smh
- i love how all of the dads we see dote on their daughters so much
- of course only now do they mention the fact that atuy and haku are drinking buddies and we just have to take it at face value
- actually seeing those sailor uniforms in action make atuy’s regret that much funnier, the stills don’t quite do it justice (though really, it’s the sound effects carrying the team)
- lol the background soyankekur antics are great
- cocopooooo noooo damn this romance with mukkur is great
Ep 20:
- huhu woshis was allowed down to the underground garden huh
- benawiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
- dang they didn’t use the hot air balloon ;-; so disappointing like if they do it this way they won’t even get to retake the supplies ;-;
- i guess its a good way to hint at kuon’s identity
- something is wrong with kurou’s face
- also where the fuck is nosuri - i know kiwru is a lost cause for this show but nosuri too? they really are trying to wipe out the tactics seen in the VN
- i do think the line about kurou’s line to kuon about “ripping the country in half” is nice - can’t remember if it was in the VN but at this point most of the good lines seem to be coming out of the VN
- ugh the twins are such a cop out, still think they should have went with the hot air balloon strategy
- we hardly knew ye mito
Ep 21:
- dang I’m pleasantly surprised by these CG soldiers
- bye bye munechika, still salty you can’t turn into a mech
- oof “I’m sure my mom was someone like you” this show lives and breathes on dramatic irony
- bye bye anju, what was the point of actually having oshtoru there when the tea was delivered? makes him seem more incompetent than he is, though entua was nowhere to be seen - imo for the best
- oshtoru, an honorable man through and through, giving up your mask, lowkey too honorable for your own good
- okay one of my favorite things is how regularly dekopompo is ignored during the generals’ council meetings; overlapping voices isn’t really a thing in the VNs due to its nature as a written medium first and foremost
- oh interesting Oshtoru’s men are coming to defend him that’s new
- oh no torture time ;-;
- post episode VN notes: ugh they also dropped the Woshis power grab of locking Dekopompo and Raiko outside of the gates
Ep 22:
- Yes go be a dad Yakuto and stop Nekone from doing stupid shit please oh please oh please
- Man they are seriously retooling oshtoru’s downfall aren’t they - wish it didn’t come off so crudely planned. Like, y’all know Oshtoru is loved by the people, did the generals not think some sort of rioting would happen if you let that info go public? Granted the original plot of having Entua sneak the info out is pretty contrived... but at least it better preserves the perceived competency of the generals by forcing a smaller timeframe in which everything goes down.
- man people watching this will be so confused next season when they realize Kiwru is a prince
- wut Kuon you should know you probably won’t be able to get info to the princesses once y’all leave. Good that Shinonon is going on ahead to Ennakamuy though.
- eh are they’re gonna try leaving by sea this time? even though Ennakamuy is in the mountains?
- secret tunnel ~ ♫
- aw no Evenkuruga reveal for Nosuri and Ougi. Though, I guess the anime never established that their base was in the Hakuorokaku basement...
- you know, since they just generalized the jamming barrier it’s kinda nice to see that the gang had to sneak in the hard way. IMO that’s one of the “game design justifies the plot” moments - the VN tries to keep everyone together so you can have all your unit options when fighting, but let’s be honest smaller strike teams work at times.
- oh hi Honoka, you’re not arrested here? guess not.
- oh god have they been translating Atuy’s “onii-san”s as “mister” this whole time? I can’t say that “love” was a better translation but that’s just tragic
- I wish we got more hints that haku actually has been doing some training (aka the SRPG parts of the game) rather than these random moments of competency and knocking out the guards.
- good god oshtoru your honorableness is gonna be the death of you. how can you trust Vurai. Seriously idk how it’s gonna turn out here, but Vurai literally wants to see Anju dead in the VN.
- ok i lie splitting the party was a terrible idea. they are taking way too long to convince oshtoru to take a stand. these men are way too stubborn. jk its fine
- whelp there goes the boat
- aw yeh Yakutowaruto lets go
Ep 23:
- Yakutowaruto continues to be a badass
- ugh and of course Oshtoru gets hurt, and he’s not gonna tell anyone
- ok I’m enjoying how acrobatic these twins are
- the plot change ripples continue to be seen; there’s no distractions at the gates since dekopompo is inside the gates. Raiko’s strategy stuff does make for good tension tho.
- ugh the fact that Soyankekuru is in the capital is gonna complicate things. The moment Atuy is seen to defect he’s screwed. That’s gonna change the timeframe of things second half.
- lol Kuon god powers time, hope there weren’t too many casualties. Poor Nosuri now has two sacks of people to deal with...
- ok I feel like I’m seeing more poor art quality this episode
- wow it seems that everyone’s on board for some arson today
- bruh don’t take him through the sewers Oshtoru’s wound’s gonna get infected
- oh god who thought it was a good idea to give Rulu a blade.
- Cocopo best bird. Period. MVP.
- Soyankekuru, what a guy.
Ep 24:
- ooh mech fight in the city? oh nvm its just a sword fight. a sword fight between two beasts. thank god vurai ain’t that dumb
- wait they said there was a barrier in the palace, but i don’t think there was a barrier for the outer walls? why the frick didn’t the twins just teleport out for the last bit? they were pretty close to the gates... unless they needed the gates open anyways?
- vurai? not dumb? scratch that, good god do y’all not care about the safety of the people? guess not cuz it’s MECH FIGHT TIME (ok, if we’re honest oshtoru’s the one who initiated so yes he’s equally dumb)
- water vs fire, groudon vs kyogre, this is what animation is all about YASSS
- the twins’ shield is too OP
- haku please stop indulging Nekone
- will the twins actually be able to seal Vurai? they were kind of trash at doing their job in the VN (though they did have the good excuse of being exhausted for this particular instance)
- ok that nekone running sequence is jank
- damn haku blocked that punch? oh no he’s on fire
- looking like nekone’s “it was my fault” is gonna be part of a cascade of setbacks rather than the final blow. I’m kinda glad - the VN’s take was probably the most exasperating part of the whole story - gutwrenching but also made me want to punch her. I’m up for arguing whether or not taking that away was a good thing
- oh no the salt. no. how could you put it at the post-credits scene.
- vurai’s confirmed dead? that could be a problem next season.
Ep 25:
- dang what an opener giving us no info just kuon looking sad. we had emo haku now get ready for emo kuon i guess
- nuedori is probably my favorite song after kimi ga tame, such a good song to overlay the time skip over
- man anime viewers must be so confused. like they saw Haku and Oshtoru get out of town but only Oshtoru show up. man this is so effed up.
- no not the fan noooo augh  brokoro in the kokoro
- sad nekone really sells it doesn’t it
- dang I knew Ennakamuy was surrounded by mountains but I guess the anime went and interpreted that as a CRATER
- at least kuon didn’t leave until later in the night?
-i know the twins did a spell in the VN as well but seeing the visual change between haku and oshtoru is a bit silly
- what’s with the flower field that’s so cheesy
- i can see why someone said laughed rather than cried during this particular use of kimi ga tame - the alternating shots to his saltification is just silly, there’s so many prettier shots for showing people dissolving - like the VN gave you a very serviceable “standing on a cliff as the sun rises and you fade into dust” why didn’t you take it
- side note in the VN i was imagining it something like this scene from CCS but different lighting (sorry I could only find the english dub on short notice, timestamp at 1:13:24):
youtube
- also how could you get everyone off model during such an important part
- you know what I’m just gonna pretend that there was some really bad production crunch so they had to do a rush job smh
- i do like this orchestration tho
- oh god the cheese never ends, now it’s raining
- that said it’s not terrible, but definitely missing something compared to the VN
- haha with some of your decisions next season you might just end up in Denebokshir Haku. jk we all know how it ends
- boro boro ;-; yes go hug your kid she needs all the comfort she can get

Winter Weebwatch #1
So, because it is Good when I get to have opinions about things, I figured I’d try out doing a bunch of mini-reviews for the current season of anime, doing a new batch of reviews with each episode and seeing how they evolve and change over time, whether some do better, or some fall behind, or if I end up dropping any of them (and by any of them, I mean Plunderer).
The winter anime season is kind of a dead zone: Since it starts in January when everybody’s starting to get busy again and Christmas has screwed over their sense of work-life balance, it’s the season with the lowest amount of viewers, and so it’s the season where the shows tend to be noticeably low effort and low budget. It’s telling that, despite having huge franchises with a lot of brand recognition, Sunrise and A-1 Pictures put Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise and Sword Art Online on hiatus for the entirety of the winter season, choosing to take the hit that comes from a three month hiatus instead of wasting twelve or thirteen episodes on the Death Season, The Season Where Shows Go To Die.
So by and large, what we’re reviewing here are either the shows distribution companies didn’t care about, or the shows distribution companies did care about but couldn’t get a channel to pick up in any other season. We’re also not reviewing all of them, because there’s like ninety and my store of time and opinions is finite, so we’re reviewing seven.
While the intention is to follow these seven shows through to the end, what will probably happen is I might drop a couple that aren’t keeping my interest, and pick up a couple that catch my eye. If I pick up new ones, then whatever I pick up will get some kind of bumper review covering several episodes.
Also, I really dragged my heels getting this done, so most of these shows have already aired their second episodes. I’ll be trying to put out the second episode reviews a lot quicker, so that I can be relatively current by the time the third episodes roll around.
Anyway! Week 1, first episodes.
Infinite Dendrogram.
Tumblr media
★★★☆☆
Infinite Dendrogram has a terrible and ridiculous premise that crumbles into dust if you examine it for more than 0.2 seconds, and I kind of don’t mind that at all.
The show follows Ray Starling, a player in the titular Virtual Reality MMO, which promises infinite possibilities owing to its two unique selling points: The first, that all the NPCs are fully-fledged AIs, meaning the world ‘exists’ distinct from its players or any manned oversight, with quests emerging naturally from the NPCs’ wants and needs, and with NPCs able to permanently die; and the second, that each player character has an Embryo, a superpower generated using their personality as a model, with infinite possibilities.
This is an inconceivably dumb premise. Leaving aside the obvious game balance issues with the Embryos, it’s clarified early on that this AI technology is unique to the game, which means that some game company discovered the technology to create fully conscious, sapient life, and decided to use that technology to create a video game (and in doing so, directly led to the deaths of thousands of those sapient lives).
But I … kinda don’t care? Infinite Dendrogram’s episode was fun, lively, not terribly original but consistently engaging, and managed to introduce five characters who I actually kind of like while telling a self-contained episodic story with good stakes and nice pacing. It feels like Sword Art Online if Sword Art Online was written by a competent writer and also not just a delivery system for creepy, irritating fanservice, and that’s pretty nice.
Also, bonus points for actually making the in-universe game look fun? We’ll call that one another advantage it has over SAO.
ID: Invaded.
Tumblr media
★★★★☆
ID: Invaded has indisputably the strongest first episode of this season of anime (really first two, as it aired both episodes one and two back to back), by a gigantic margin. A video called ‘Defending ID: Invaded’ floated by my youtube dash a few days back, so clearly some people don’t agree with me on that, but that’s fine. It’s okay for them to be wrong.
When ID: Invaded picks up, a young man awakens in an empty white void full of floating chunks of a city, with his own body in pieces and no memories. Pulling himself back together, he realises, upon seeing a dead body of a young woman, that his name is Sakaido, and he’s a detective here to solve the woman’s murder.
Sakaido, it quickly turns out, is exploring a cognitive world formed out of a telepathic link with the killer, with a team of investigators in the real world watching through his eyes and picking out evidence to find the murderer with. When the murderer, a serial killer called the Perforator, kidnaps a member of the investigation team, the race is on to find him before he can kill again.
So, ID: Invaded has kind of mastered the art of dripfeeding information in a way that gets a viewer hooked very quickly while steadily delivering a series of twists and turns, and recontextualising the story and the mystery (which, it rapidly emerges, is not the mystery of the Perforator, but rather the mystery of Sakaido himself). It’s gripping and inventive, with a strong if slightly convoluted premise and a lot of interesting material to set up going forward in the series.
In a nice touch, director Ei Aoki turns the mental worlds Sakaido visits (two in the first two episodes) into homages to other surrealist anime directors, mimicking both their compositions and their cinematography. The world of the Perforator draws marked influence from the works of Mamoru Hosoda, an apprentice of Hayao Miyazaki and one of the original creators of Digimon Adventure; while the second world visited pays homage to the works of Akiyuki Shinbo, best known for the unsettling surrealist landscapes and equally unsettling cinematography of Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Fate/Extra Last Encore.
Pet.
Tumblr media
★☆☆☆☆
Pet looks like a cheap OVA from 2004. Let’s just get that out of the way, it looks bad, but in a really inoffensive way where it just kind of looks cheap and outdated.
It’s … fine. It’s okay. If you’ve ever had a Burger King bacon and cheese burger, you basically know what Pet is like. If you haven’t ever had a Burger King bacon and cheese burger, go and have a Burger King bacon and cheese burger, and then you’ll know what Pet is like.
The first episode doesn’t really give away anything about the premise of the series, save that it involves psychic criminals, but it tells a decent self-contained little story about a guy who learns something he shouldn’t and is then psychic-ly tormented before his memory is eventually wiped.
There’s also just not a lot to say about Pet, though. It fulfills its function as a work of storytelling, and it doesn’t really ever do much more than that, at least in its first episode. It finds its comfortable niche in just being very average and unremarkable, and sticks there, being average and unremarkable.
Of all the first episodes I’m reviewing, Pet seems the most passionless. It’s such a middle of the road piece of art that I struggle to imagine why it was even made. It doesn’t seem like it’s trying to sell merchandise, it doesn’t seem like a passion project, it doesn’t really seem like much of anything. It feels like someone asked a creative writing class to write a short story about psychic criminals, and then one of those stories was turned into an anime episode.
Plunderer.
Tumblr media
☆☆☆☆☆
Plunderer offers a moderately interesting premise that literally nobody watching the first episode will even remember because oh good god, from the second scene onwards the entire episode is just non-stop sexual harassment and assault, first from the protagonist to the deuteragonist and then from the antagonist to the deuteragonist, and I hated it. I hated it so much.
In a bizarre turn, when the protagonist sexually harasses and attempts to sexually assault the deuteragonist, it’s played as wacky comedy, but when the antagonist does basically the exact same thing, it’s played with all the sense of horror that those actions warrant.
I just … don’t really get how I’m meant to ever sympathise with the protagonist after this. I don’t know how you rehabilitate a character in the audience’s minds when our very first introduction to him tells us that he’s a sex pest.
Also something something numbers something something die if your number reaches zero something something magical items who even cares what the premise is, my patience for this show ran dry thirty seconds into the second scene.
If I had a way of representing it, I would give this first episode a negative number of stars.
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen.
Tumblr media
★★★☆☆
Let it just be noted that ‘Sorcerous Stabber Orphen’ is the most unintentionally hilarious anime title of the season, so there’s that.
A remake of a 1999 series of the same name, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen follows Orphen, a disgraced former sorcerer turned small-time crook and moneylender whose ill-advised attempt to commit marriage fraud is abruptly interrupted by the appearance of a dragon crashing through the roof of his potential bride/mark’s house. This isn’t just any dragon, however, but Orphen’s sister, Azalie, magically transformed after a spell gone wrong, leading Orphen on a quest to turn her back into a human before the sorcerers of the Tower of Fang can kill her.
Side note: While he names himself ‘Orphen’ because he is an orphan, I’m not misspelling the name, that’s how it’s spelled in-show. This is everybody’s fault except mine.
So, this first episode rather shows the age of its source material. It looks very much like a spruced up late 90s anime made with current day animation techniques, and that’s actually not a bad look for it. It’s also not really a good look -- Megalo Box this ain’t -- it’s just kind of a … look. Which is there. It exists in a state of Neutral Retro.
As first episodes go, though, this is probably one of the emptier and slower ones, somehow managing to cover less of its plot than even Plunderer (although it wins out on a massive margin the basis of that plot not being 90% sex crimes), because seemingly not only is its animation style cribbed from late 90s action anime, but so is its pacing.
What’s there, though, is pretty fun. None of it is dazzlingly original, it probably wasn’t that original even in the 90s, but we get introduced to a likeable cast of characters, we get a decent central conflict set up, and the worldbuilding is, while bare bones at present, at least interesting enough to hook a viewer who likes fantasy.
Also, it’s called ‘Sorcerous Stabber Orphen,’ so, you know. Extra star just for that, man.
In/Spectre.
Tumblr media
★★☆☆☆
I’m not sure what In/Spectre is trying to be, and it doesn’t seem to be sure either.
The marketing set it up as an atmospheric, brooding supernatural mystery. The first third of the episode frames it as a romantic comedy with emphasis on the comedy. The second third of the episode switches back to atmospheric, brooding supernatural mystery, only for the third third of the episode to switch tracks yet again, this time to an action comedy with an emphasis on the action.
I don’t know whether I’m coming or going with this show. I get mood whiplash constantly, as it veers from genre to genre like a drunk driver on the freeway. By the time the last third of the episode hit, I felt completely unmoored not just from the plot, but from how I was even meant to interpret the characters.
It’s not bad at any of those genres, either. The romantic comedy section was actually pretty funny, the supernatural mystery section was suitably ominous, the action comedy section established stakes and followed through on them pretty well. None of it was blow-me-away-amazing, but it was all competent, it’s just that there’s no coherent sense of tone to any of it.
Darwin’s Game.
Tumblr media
★☆☆☆☆
Full disclosure, I completely forgot I was watching Darwin’s Game. I finished these reviews, thought ‘haha, well done, I’ve reviewed all six shows I wanted to review’ and didn’t remember that there was a seventh on my list until I saw its name come up on a streaming website.
That’s a large part of why I’m scoring it so low. It’s better than In/Spectre, Pet, or Plunderer, it’s probably at least as good as Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, but at least those shows actually made some kind of impression on me. Darwin’s Game is good, but I can’t exactly justify giving two or three stars to a show that had such little impact that it vanished from my memory as soon as I stopped actively watching it with my eyes, like some kind of middling Doctor Who monster.
So, Darwin’s Game follows, um. It follows … a guy … with a name that I can’t recall … who is unwittingly dragged into a death game played in the streets of Tokyo. With each player given Sigils, seemingly magical abilities that they can use to gain advantages in the game, and with points exchangeable for vast sums of real money, the players of Darwin’s Game are set to the task of hunting down and murdering other players. Unable to back out of the game, Some Guy finds help with, er … with … a person … whose name I also don’t recall … and …
God, trying to recall the details of this show is like trying to recall what you had for dinner last week just after a severe head injury. You know, but the details just aren’t there.
I’m kind of at a loss as far as opinions go, because I don’t … know? If I think hard, I can remember the order of events that happened in the first episode, but I can’t remember what, if any, emotional response I had to them. All of my memories of this show are a blank, emotionless void, this is like asking me to review Solitaire. Like, I guess it was fine? I guess?
I can’t remember the main character’s face or voice.
Note to self, write all Darwin’s Game reviews from now on immediately after watching the episode, otherwise all recollection of it will melt like ice cream in a heat wave.
I’m still giving it one star, though, because I refuse to put it on the same level as Plunderer. For a start, the main character doesn’t belong on some kind of registry.

As an abuse survivor who ships Reylo I don't really agree with your points. Look, I believe anyone is open to interpret fiction as they do choose. But until I came onto this site, I'd actually never even thought to interpret the interrogation as abuse. I think the issue here is that people confuse subtext and literal text. Literally, the scene is an interrogation. Subtextually it can be interpreted several ways. Personally, I don't romanticize their scenes, but I do analyze them. (#1)
Analysis is different than the possibilities of subtext though, because subjective readings are personal, whereas analysis is using knowledge of tropes, allusions, themes, etc. It's important to acknowledge that interrogation, etc. is not pleasant for Rey. But that doesn't make it literally rape. That doesn't make it literally abusive. They're enemies, and if they become lovers their relationship will CHANGE entirely. Kylo Ren will be no more. Ben Solo will have returned. (#2...)
So, my point is this: as of now, the scenes between them are subjective, so we can't force our subjective reasons onto the literal reading and onto others. When I interpret the subtext using analysis, I'm not "romanticizing" a scene. I'm using the information put there *by the writer and director* to interpret what I think will happen later. These scenes are not romantic, but may have romantic subtext. I see the potential for a change in the relationship based on my knowledge. (#3...)
However romantic subtext does not equal literal romance. My point is literal text and subtext are greatly different and forcing them into the same box is not useful. Talks of rape and abuse deserve more nuance than many antis give it. This bothers me as a survivor. To say an interrogation has to be read as rape is reductive imo. The future of Reylo is based on a change of relationship, character building, and building of trust. Not as it is now in the movie. It's interpretation vs subjectivity.
Hey, thanks a lot for your message and for taking the time to explain your point of view to me.
I’m glad you explained that you see this as a potential relationship founded in change, and that you draw a clear line between text and subtext. I do base a lot of my arguments on subtext, and a lot of it is colored by what happened to me as an abuse survivor, so I acknowledge that I do make a few stretches here and there. Thanks for reminding me to look more at things exactly how they are in canon and to not get carried away.
I appreciate what you said about  the comparison of interrogation to rape being reductive, and I apologize if anything I said has come off this way. I’ll be more considerate in the future. I agree that a lot of antis try to place rape on the same plane as the bare bones of what happened on screen. Trivializing rape is definitely not something I’m trying to do here.
Just to be clear, when I say romanticize, what I mean is seeing his bad behavior as something swoonworthy, like, uh, when he “bridal carries” her after rendering her unconscious to kidnap her  I’m talking about people naming their babies Kylo. When I say normalize (which I admittedly probably say too much lmao), what I mean is treating bad behavior as excusable or normal. You seem to not be romanticizing or normalizing Kylo Ren’s behavior, but a lot of people on this website do, which worries me.
My issues with Reylo are less about the mind probe scene and more about the future of the relationship. Kylo Ren would have to do some serious evolution into Ben Solo for me to be remotely comfortable with them having a relationship. It bothers me that their initial interactions were based on violence, coercion, invasion, and threatening.
My subjective interpretation of this relationship stems from the things that happened to me. The line where he says, “You know I can take whatever I want” sounds like something that was said to me, and is a big red flag and trigger. The whole scene was to me. I was influenced super greatly by the Han/Leia dynamic in which Han pushes past Leias denials and expressions of “no.” I grew up with the Empire Strikes Back, and their relationship mirrored the one I had. What I’m the most worried about is people who grow up with The Force Awakens seeing “You know I can take whatever I want” and similar behavior exhibited by Kylo Ren as a precursor to a romantic relationship. It’s a bit of a stretch, I know, but this is why the relationship makes me so uncomfortable.
So I guess I should be saying more, “why reylo hurts me” and not “why reylo hurts abuse survivors” in general. I didn’t mean to speak for you, I’m sorry. I’m just really worried that someone will get hurt the way I did.

Forsaken: UK Shadowhunters Con Recap
Hi all! So I went to Forsaken this weekend, if you don’t know what that is, it was a Shadowhunters con in London with Maxim Roy (Jocelyn), Jon Cor (Hodge), Kaitlyn Leeb (Camille) and Joel Labelle (Alaric).
It was so much fun, and since it was their first con/they’re not the main cast it was so small, nice and chill. They were all so down to earth, humbled and overwhelmed that we came to see/speak to them. They each had two panels (one on each day) and a full guest panel, I’ve managed to write up most of what I can remember below. Obviously there’s a lot I haven’t captured, but highlights/best moments are under the cut!
A lot of things we discussed were personal/non-Shadowhunter related, if you just want to read the bits to do with the show, just read the bits that have been bolded.
Kaitlyn
Camille will not be appearing in 2b
We were meant to get a scene set in the 1800s when we saw the flashback photo of Camille/Magnus/Ragnor. The scene was meant to be at a ball, and Camille tells Magnus about her dalliance with that short lived Russian. However unfortunately due to budget constraints the scene got cut.
Another scene that got cut: initially at the beginning we were meant to see a scene between Camille/Raphael that was all in French. As she doesn't speak French she spent a while learning the lines and the accent. She nailed it by the time they did the table read, but after that the scene got cut.
When discussing ships that would never work, she said Camille/Alec. We agreed that would only happen if she did an encanto on him. After discussing for a while Kaitlyn said that to get back at/hurt Magnus for sending her to Idris, when Camille breaks free she'll encanto Alec.
If Camille wasn't such a lying cheating bitch she believes Camille and Magnus could've had a future, because deep down they do and will always love eachother.
Kaitlyn has a few projects coming up: she's continuing with Heartland, a Netflix show coming up (Slasher 2 I think she said?), and another show that also stars Paulino Nunes.
Her favourite scene to shoot was the first scene with Simon and Raphael.
She loves her scenes with Magnus because she loves working with Harry. After Harry, her favourite person to work with is Alberto.
Hardest thing to shoot/skill she had to learn whilst being on Shadowhunters was learning to speak with fangs in her mouth. She was pretty bad at speaking, but at least she was better than David. David was awful at first. Trying to do anything (e.g. pouring the bloody marys) whilst she had the long nails was very difficult too.
Another hard thing to shoot was the graveyard scene. Avery was born 5 weeks prior and shooting went till about 7am. She was also wearing heels which isn't easy on grass/mud.
She initially auditioned for the role of Izzy. They then brought her back to audition for Camille, which she got after one audition.
If she could play anyone else in the show it would be Magnus because his character is amazing, but if she's talking about a character she could physically play (e.g. a female) it would be Izzy.
On who is the biggest mother hen on set? Kat. Not in a particularly maternal way, but she always makes everyone - especially new cast members - feel welcome and part of the Shadowhunter family.
Kaitlyn loves British TV. Fave shows include Downton Abbey and Keeping Up Appearances. She also loves the Royal Family and Kate in particular.
Her comfort movie/movie she's seen the most is Monster In Law. She loves Jane Fonda.
One place she'd love to visit? Somewhere in Africa to see safari. However she'd have to wait till Avery is a little older as the flight is so long.
Her favourite animal is an ostrich. She'd love a pet ostrich, she'd name it Betty.
If she could dress Avery up as a Disney princess it would be Pocahontas. For Halloween last year she dressed her up as a gypsy bride, and her friend's son was the gypsy groom.
She loves being a mother cause it makes her feel like a wonder woman. Being able to juggle so much and look after another being is so fulfilling.
Her mother was her role model growing up, so she wants to be the same for Avery.
She doesn't really get starstruck, but when she was on Total Recall she had a moment of being starstruck when she saw Colin Farrell. Her husband joined her at the premiere and when he saw Jessica Biel he totally freaked and asked for a photo.
Joel
Firstly Joel is like the funniest dorkiest man ever. He reiterated many times that if he does 'make it' and become a super famous actor in the future and becomes a douchebag, he wants us to call him out on it. He wants to always stay down to earth like he is now.
Joel is an actor and a stuntman. Trying to break into acting was difficult: casting directors would see his stunting resume and not really give him a chance. Luckily he's now seen as both and has a few different projects coming up. He's currently doing some work on Fargo.
He initially auditioned for the role of Meliorn, but that then went to Jade. They brought him back a few times and he then landed the role of Alaric.
He loves working across Isaiah, they were both such fun on set. Joel really wanted to pull a prank on Isaiah (saran wrap the toilet bowl in his trailer) but was scared Isaiah would kill him.
He was super freaked when he first heard that Isaiah was cast as Luke. 'That's the Old Spice guy??!!' but got over it pretty quickly. Secret: Isaiah literally is the Old Spice guy in real life.
Joel doesn't really get starstruck, but he once was at the craft table making a sandwich and Gary Oldman was next to him making a sandwich and he didn't know what to do with himself.
His favourite scene on Shadowhunters was when he kidnapped Clary/Simon and put them in the car, because he actually drove the car afterwards. He was told to 'drive safe but make it look dangerous'. He told Kat/Alberto to buckle up and just sped round the corner, as they hadn't buckled up they flew across the seats.
As a stuntman and professional skydiver he's broken like every bone in his body. (Don't quote me on this, but it was like his arms 3 times, every finger, both his wrists and all his ribs on one side?) He was actually in a coma once too. One of his arms has like metal and screws, it always beeps when he goes to the airport in China.
Though he's got a few projects he still professionally skydives and is going back to Toronto to do so very soon. He promised Dom that he'll bring him skydiving soon.
He didn't steal any clothes from the set because Alaric's clothes were 'so lame'. He hated on his dip dye plaid shirt.
He wishes he could've had more fight scenes. As a stuntman he would've loved to have more fight scenes and done all the stunts himself. If he could've redone his death scene it would've been a dramatic battle death.
He didn’t really prepare for the role/read any werewolf lore when he got the part. He feels if he prepares he tends to over prepare and just mess up. Acting is meant to be like real life - in real life we don’t prepare everything we say and have set lines, acting should be as natural as possible. You just have to learn your lines, hit your mark and listen to what others are saying to you.
He'd love to play Aladdin in the live action version. (Someone then started the hashtag #JoelLabelleForAladdin)
Actors he looks up to? Denzel Washington and Shia LaBeouf. (The first because he's an incredible actor, the latter as he's so famous yet his personal life is not in the limelight. Shia is a very 'normal person'.)
Worst/most embarrassing thing that has happened on a set? He was on Reign and was part of a battle scene outside where they all had to run/charge forward. He tripped over a log and fell pretty much into a really expensive camera and completely broke it. He's super clumsy on set and has knocked over/broken many props too.
He was so flattered and humbled about this weekend. It was his first con and 'one of the best things he's ever done.' Speaking to his family about it, his mother and sister were like 'why? why would people want to come and see and take photos with you?' his sister sent him a whatsapp like 'why, you're ugly'.
Jon
Firstly Jon is super poetic and everything he said was just so wonderful, quotable and long winded, so I probably won't be able to capture everything that was said. Like not from the panel, but his autographs took so long. Maxim and Joel were totally making fun of him and were saying he was writing poems for everyone. Every autograph had a little message, he was such a sweetheart (mine said 'you have a wonderful smile').
Jon's read all of the main TMI books and seen the film, he wanted to have his own take on Hodge. He wanted him to be seen as like an older brother/uncle, someone who was close to the Lightwoods. He wasn't a Lightwood though, and he's not part of the Circle, he's just somewhere in between, on his own.
He thinks Hodge felt so guilty after what he did, he was just so surprised and like 'oh no what's happening' when Valentine just took the cup from him.
His favourite Lightwood to work with was Alec, because he gets along really well with Matt.
If Hodge hadn't died yet, Jon would have loved to have done the scene from the books with Sebastian.
He can't say anything because of NDAs, so we don't know if Hodge might be able to come back. Perhaps in a flashback with Jace and Alec?
If Jon could play a superhero it would be Batman. Jon has a few different projects coming up, most recently he filmed a pilot for the CW. It's an adaption from a YA novel, I think he said something about mermaids? They don't know if they'll get picked up or not but from what they've heard, the pilot is being very warmly received.
If Jon wasn't an actor he would just be a writer. He talked a lot about his book and short stories and gave advice to writers. He started writing his book when he was 19 and every now and then he goes back to it and rewrites bits. It's been finished for years, he just always changes bits and doesn't want to publish it yet. When he does publish it, it will be free and proceeds will go to charity. He said he thought about going to an editor or publisher but he doesn't want restrictions. With acting, he is just an actor who is told what to do - by the script, directors, producers.. etc. Writing on the other hand is something personal and truly where he can be free to do whatever he wants.
Jon talked about his mother a lot. She was a 16 year old single mother and daughter to a priest (I think he said, or granddaughter?). He was originally meant to be put up for adoption but once she had him she couldn't let him go. She went to the prospective parents and apologised that she couldn't give him up. She's basically his biggest constant and role model in life, and why he cares and admires women so much. He got really emotional and choked up and I thought I was about to cry. The whole room was just silent.
Jon and his mother moved around a lot when he was younger so he was always the 'new kid' at school. That's how he ended up acting - he once joined a drama class and realised acting was a way he could almost deflect any of the mean things people said about him/how he could make others laugh. He felt like as the new kid he always had to prove himself to others.
So obviously his name is Jon Cor - when he was bullied his nickname was Jon Apple Core, his nickname from friends was Jonny Hardcore.
He talked a while about gaming (unfortunately I can't really remember the games he talked about) but he was saying how he appreciates games as an art form. Some games have beautiful storylines and are way more than just *sings Super Mario theme song*.
He laughed and talked about some of his past projects, including Saw. He said it was such a fun and crazy experience, there was one scene where he was just handcuffed to a chair for a while, whilst his co-star was hung above him. They took her down every few takes and made sure she wasn't hanging for too long, but she still became numb from the waist down and had to go to hospital.
Jon’s all time favourite band are The White Stripes. He also absolutely loves The Doors.
Maxim
Obviously the first thing everyone talked about was Jocelyn's death. Similarly Maxim talked about NDAs so can't confirm or deny if she'll be able to come back at all.
She found out about Jocelyn's death after shooting 2x02.
If Jocelyn were still alive she would've loved to have had more scenes with Isaiah. Following the books, Jocelyn and Luke would've eventually gotten married.
Isaiah is also a great kisser. As on screen kisses are so mechanical they’re often pretty awkward, so it’s always a pleasant surprise when you find an actor who kisses great on screen.
Her favourite episode is the pilot. There was just something so magical about the first episode, everyone was so excited to film and to be part of such a huge project.
Her favourite scene with Kat is the one from the pilot where Jocelyn gives Clary her stele.
She loved the World Inverted episode, she'd love to explore that again. She said when her and Alan were dancing, he kept saying that they should kiss. 'Alan is so in love with me!'
She thought everyone was so great in the AU episode, she though Isaiah was hilarious and Emeraude did such a great job with nerd!Izzy.
Her best friends on set were Alan and Jon.
Maxim only did one audition and got the role. She filmed her audition on her iPhone in a hotel room and got it straight away. (Joel was so amazed, ‘one audition? ONE audition?! one audition on an iphone???’) She submitted her video on a Thursday, got told she got the role on Sunday, flew out on Tuesday and started filming on Thursday.
Though Jocelyn and Maryse had a rough relationship, Maxim thinks Jocelyn would totally approve of Clary's friendship with Isabelle. She wouldn't judge Izzy on her parents' mistakes, and be happy that Clary has someone so strong to show her the ropes.
On Climon/Clace: Jocelyn would approve of Climon because she knows Simon is like the nicest and sweetest boy who would treat Clary right. (As Maxim she totally does not ship them though). With Clace she at first wouldn't approve as she never wanted Clary to get involved with a Shadowhunter cause she'd be scared he'd turn out like Valentine, but in the end would approve. She'd realise that Jace is a good person who will treat her right and protect her.
She said that Alberto is so much like Simon and is the nicest, sweetest boy. She once asked him if she could adopt him. She wants a small Alberto that she can carry around in her pocket.
When the younger actors were filming the flashback episodes, Maxim spoke to the actress portaying young!Jocelyn. She gave her more physical pointers such as how she moves and how she fights - she held the blade in one hand which was unfortunate for the younger actress as it was super heavy. (Maxim said after the day they shot the flashback in the park where Jocelyn kills the demon from the lake in the park she could barely move her arm.)
She feels like she was the mother hen on set, though she's not particularly serious herself. She played pranks and scared people too. She wanted to hide in Dom's bathroom and jump out at him but she was scared of what he'd do afterwards.
Speaking of pranks, she said her best one ever was on a film that was shot in Mexico. One of the actors was kinda drunk and like asking them to all go out at like 3am when they had a call the next morning, so the next day they told the director/producer. They hired two guys to act as cops and pretend that he did something wrong and would get arrested, they staged a whole argument between the cops and director in Spanish (the actor doesn't speak it so was just standing there scared). They convinced him he was going to get arrested and wouldn't be allowed back to Canada. This lasted two hours.
She also pulled a pretty harsh prank on her mother. Her mother always used to buy the lottery, and one day when she was out she asked Maxim/her husband to write down the numbers for her. Maxim and her dad decided it would be fun to pretend she won a lot of money, found her ticket and wrote down 5 of the 6 numbers. Her mother thought she had won like $250,000 dollars and was totally freaking out, then they told her they lied.
Maxim is a scuba diver. She’d totally recommend scuba divers to go to Belize.
She loves British music. Currently she’s loving Adele, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay.
And finally just a few notable thoughts that came up in the group discussion with Maxim/Jon/Joel (Kaitlyn had to leave early to fly back to Canada):
Which character would win a THG battle? Everyone agreed Alaric would die pretty soon, it was a toss up between Jocelyn and Hodge though (brains vs. brawl)
What weapon would they use in a THG fight? Joel said a machine gun. Jon said a pen, because the ‘pen is mightier than the sword’. He then went on a ramble about how he’d just do small things like steal Maxim’s toothbrush and slowly make her think that she’s going insane. Joel and Maxim pretended to fall asleep as he discussed his plans.
Favourite colour? Maxim and Joel both said blue. They think perhaps because it reminds them of the sea/sky respectively (scuba diver/skydiver). Joel’s is red.
What crazy colour would they dye their hair (in real life or for a role)? Joel - blue (because it’s his fave colour), Maxim - platinum, Hodge - purple (perhaps for a punky dude who steals things? Again, he went on a roll and Maxim/Joel just started laughing)
Spirit animal? Joel - pig (I’m so lazy), Maxim - dolphin, Jon - lion
And that’s about it for my write up. It’s 11:30 and I’m super tired, hopefully this all makes sense! I wrote half of this whilst on the tube home from the con, so if there any grammatical mistakes I apologise. If I think of any more I’ll update this, feel free to ask me any qs! And check out my forsaken tag, I’ll upload more photos later.
If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading! xx

Interview with Nadia Alexander - Actress, "Blame"
Jaclyn Bethany: Where are you from and where you based now? Nadia Alexander: I was born in South Carolina, but lived in Pittsburgh from age 1 to 13. I then relocated with my family to New York City, where I have remained ever since! JB: How did you get involved with BLAME - did you audition, or were you referred, etc? NA: The director, Quinn Shephard, actually reached out to me via Facebook! We didn't know each other personally, but I knew of her because she had booked several projects I had auditioned for (I always get sucked down the IMDb rabbit hole of "who booked that job?") Her mother, Laurie (who was also the casting director), had known about me for a little while, and I had also booked a Salem Witch Trials HBO pilot earlier that year, which I think cemented me further in their minds as someone who could be an asset to a similarly-minded project. Initially, when Quinn reached out with information about BLAME, she actually asked me to read for Ellie, a character who is much closer to who I am in reality. I read the script and really enjoyed it, but I never even thought twice about Melissa as a possible alternative. I had written her off as the bitchy, blonde cheerleader-- a Regina George type, which definitely isn't my style. So you can imagine my surprise, after I sent my first tape in as Ellie, when Quinn asked if I would be willing to take a stab at the villain. I almost said no, but Quinn persisted and I decided there was no harm in trying for multiple roles. I walked into the callback still sure Ellie was the role for me, but something changed when Quinn had us do a four person improv (myself, Sarah Mezzanotte, Luke Slattery and Owen Campbell--all of whom would book the parts they were reading for!) We improvised a party scene similar to the one you see in the film. We were dancing and goofing around and it helped that Owen and I have actually known each other since we were 14 (we went to high school together), so I felt very comfortable sitting on his lap and playing around with him and what have you. Simultaneously, I was trying really hard to be the "sexy, bitchy" girl, which, when you boil down Melissa's character, is really exactly what she does-- she puts on this character that isn't really who she truly is. It took two more rounds of callbacks (and some rewrites from Quinn), but together we discovered a new version of Melissa who wasn't so effortlessly the role she plays. We added a lot more anger and fire and crassness to her, which felt far more up my alley than a girl who was complimenting her friend's bracelet and wearing pink on Wednesdays. JB: What was it like working with Quinn, someone who performed as writer/director/ and actor on the project? NS: It was, in all honestly, an utterly life-changing experience. Quinn is such a singularly unique talent, and it was truly an honor to get to work on what is her first of many incredible films in her career. By getting to work with her on her debut, I feel almost as though I got let in on a secret before everyone else was clued into her incredible abilities. People are definitely realizing it now with the finished product in their hands, but I've known it for almost two years--pretty much since the moment I met her! She has the kind of vision and perseverance that I find rare in any artist, let alone someone as young as she is. Right from that very first Facebook message, I sensed that BLAME was going to be something really special. I even told her I'd work crew if she didn't want to cast me as an actor (thankfully--for the sake of the crew's sanity-- she did!) She has a willingness to think outside the box (as evidenced by her casting me as Melissa instead of your stereotypical blonde, sexy cheerleader type) and she gives her actors an incredible amount of freedom while never letting them stray too far from the path of what is needed to tell the story of these characters. There also was never a moment where I thought of her as someone too young or inexperienced to be doing what she was doing. She ran the ship like she's captained for decades, even on the stormiest of seas. Weird sea metaphors aside, she brings such sensitivity to her work (both on screen and off) and there was not a moment in this entire process where it wasn't very clear that this was her blood, sweat and tears passion project. She poured so much of her soul into this film, so it really makes me so happy to see the positive reactions to it! Beyond just the film, Quinn is also a huge part of my life offscreen, so I'm very very grateful to BLAME for bringing us together. She is a huge inspiration to me as an artist, but more importantly, an invaluable asset to my growth as a human being. JB: Tell me a little bit about your character, Melissa. NA: Pretty much from the moment you see her, it's clear Melissa is the villain. With her leather jackets, miniskirts and bright red hair, she stomps into school full of anger, crassness, and viciousness for no obvious reason. She frequently bullies Abigail (played by Quinn), who is set up to be the story's protagonist. When Abigail is cast over her as the lead in The Crucible by their new drama teacher Jeremy (Chris Messina), she grows increasingly jealous of their budding relationship, having gotten used to always getting her way, particularly with men. This, in turn, spirals into an almost manic obsession to reveal the truth about their potential romance and destroy as many lives as she can in the meantime. However, as the film goes on, we see more and more of Melissa's messy home life and the insecurities that lie under her nasty facade. Without revealing too much, Melissa is far more than your 1-dimensional villain. She is an immensely complex young girl struggling with a lot of internal demons. She may start out as a "bad girl" stereotype, but believe me, you won't leave the theater thinking you can put her in a box. JB: Why do you think it's important that more females feel comfortable taking on leadership roles, especially with directing, or even as multi-hyphenates to get their voices heard? What do you think might be some of the challenges as a female filmmaker and how do you think the industry's attitude towards women is changing? NA: Well, to start with, white, heterosexual, male-centric narratives have become almost a parody of themselves, and I think people are yearning for new, unique voices and stories. I think there are tons of women in this industry who already feel comfortable taking on leadership roles, but they are working in a system that is already set against them. Even in an industry that prides itself on being liberal and inclusive, misogyny still runs rampant. The whole movie and advertising mantra of "sex sells" primarily involves women being reduced to purely what their bodies bring to the table. This makes it hard enough to be taken seriously as an actress, but makes the battle of being taken seriously as a leader in a writer/director/showrunner position even more intricately difficult. Thankfully, I do think the industry is starting to move away from the "old white dudes in suits" power dynamic, but we still have a long way to go. What I think it ultimately takes is a combination of women pioneers and male allies in positions of power to knock down the walls holding these storytellers back. The world does not grow from being told the same story from the same perspective over and over again. True change comes in the form of that which is different. And I honestly believe we need women-- women of all colors and sizes and backgrounds-- to help shape the world into a better and more tolerant place. After all, women are the key to humanity even existing. It's about damn time they had a serious voice in our storytelling! JB: You won the Best Actress Award at Tribeca Film Festival! What did that feel like? After this incredible journey, what's next for you? NA: It was really surreal. Literally, the first words out of my mouth were, "What?!?" And I just kept repeating that all the way to the podium. I didn't think I was going to win--after all, this is pretty much my first lead role that is actually getting seen by people- sadly my biggest roles in the past have been in pilots that weren't picked up. So I had just assumed it would go to someone with a little more tenure in the field, and there were a lot of great performances to choose from. So when I won, some part of my brain realized I hadn't prepared a speech and I was going to have to make it up on the fly. My brain basically went "thank your mom, thank Quinn, and talk about the need for more women in this industry, for god's sake!" So I managed to hit on those three points in under a minute. Afterwards, a lot of people came up and told me they were moved by my speech, which was very sweet and really all you can hope for when you stand up there. I have two more films coming out this year, both of which are unique takes on the horror genre. The first is called Boarding School, directed by Boaz Yakin, which is about a group of undesirable kids who get sent to a boarding school where very mysterious things start occurring, increasingly raising the danger level as the film progresses. The second is called The Dark, which is Justin P. Lange's feature directorial debut. It follows a monstrous, flesh-eating undead girl (that's me!) who discovers a blind kidnapped boy in the woods she has haunted since she was murdered decades earlier. Hilarity ensues (I kid, I kid). I also am in a new Netflix series which will be out later this yead, called Seven Seconds, showrun by Veena Sud (the brain behind The Killing). It is a very timely piece in the Black Lives Matter vein about a white cop who injures a black teenager, and the repercussions that emerge as a result. My role in the story is really interesting, but if I told you about it, I'm pretty sure the Netflix cops would lock me up forever and not in a cool, Orange is the New Black kind of way...
