#work shortage

Can we dismiss this idea of a worker/labor shortage to it's core? The accuser?
Because every fast food place around me has exactly one (1) worker most days of the week. You can't tell me you're still unwilling to pay more than state/federal minimum wage when you're already paying minimum wage for someone to do the work of 14 until it became standard to be short staffed so unrealistically 8.
You're shortstaffed? Honey, you're not looking for workers in the first place, this is a dream come true as far as they're concerned. Who's gonna complain about uncooked burgers and missing items when there's one (1) dude handling a line?
I'm fucking serious. My roommate and me have asked. It's one person. Not a manager either. Everything. Everything.
These places aren't hiring, and if they are, they're hiring at the lowest legal wages they can to purposefully drive off any real applicants. Not one soul young or old, experienced or not, is going to do that shit for 7.25-13.50/hr
Sincerely ask yourself after going to a Mcdonalds with one (1) worker inside handling a line of 12, if you'd ever consider putting an application in, when the stated wage outside is the bare minimum still?
Then realize there's no way they don't/didn't have applications coming in, they just don't need to. They're surviving on literally 1/X of their staff. For minimum wage, an entire store.
It's actually true, people don't want to work, there, they don't want to work, there, your shithole you purposefully made a shithole.
We need to hit this at the heart, because it will backfire when we make it known:
There is a hiring shortage, not a worker shortage.

I'm fascinated by the insistence of even fairly progressive people over a certain age (around 20 years my senior) insistently believe the myth that "no one wants to work."
Meanwhile, again, myself and everyone I know are blasting applications as aggressively as possible for a less than 1% chance of an interview for glamourous positions such as "grocery store janitor" and "gas station cashier"
Meanwhile, study after study shows definitively that the labour "shortage" is caused by companies claiming they are hiring when they are not.
Meanwhile, the basic reality of looking around yourself at how many young people as dying in poverty while scrabbling for nonexistent jobs continues to occur.
Meanwhile, more people are striking than have in decades because working conditions are continuing to deteriorate.
"No one wants to work" is a LIE, and an insulting one at that.
(Links to studies will be provided in the reblogs)

Speaking of a previous fandom post I just shared: I have Not stepped away from fandom this fall, I’m just dealing with some health stuff and I’ve been pretty short on the energy I usually have. I’m doing okay and should be all the way better soon! But energy has been going to real job and pottery (which is also real gig job with taxable $ involved but pottery is the art form I have consistently fallen back on for comfort the past decade). I still have so much interest in unfinished fics and art I hope to return to in the new year. And I’m still hoping to noodle out some drawpiles with @sango-blep as my body and energy level allow. But yeah, still here just working to keep my nose above the water.

So. I wasn't able to sleep AT ALL last night, to the point that I gave up and went out to the living room so I wouldn't wake up my partner with all my tossing and turning.
And, this has happened before. I figured it was the fun one two combo of insomnia and chronic pain, since my nerves were way worse than usual last night. But no.
NO.
I literally just now realized as i was looking at my pill caddy to take my ADHD meds this exhausting morning that, uh oh. They're not there! You know what is there??
MY CHRONIC PAIN MEDS
I SPENT THE WHOLE NIGHT IN PAIN AND UNABLE TO SLEEP BECAUSE I WAS A DOOFUS AND TOOK THE WRONG MEDS LAST NIGHT

Do you think things would've been different had Louis and Marie Antoinette accepted constitutional monarchy.
Oh, definitely. I am bad at alternate history (which I dislike about myself, because it is super interesting), so I can't guess how, but it would sure be a very different situation if they honestly accepted constitutional monarchy.
There is this misconception of the French revolution as the "mob"/revolutionaries jumping at the first opportunity to crush royals, but in reality, Louis and MA were given so many chances and things dragged for several years until it became clear that they were uninterested at being constitutional monarchs. Then and only then the republic was founded and monarchy abolished. (And all of this before any of them lost their head).
We know is that the people of France - revolutionaries at least - wanted constitutional monarchy more than Louis and MA did. National Constituent Assembly prepared everything for it to be put into place, all while the royal couple pretended they wanted to play along. In the writings and speeches of many prominent revolutionaries, there is a clear will and hope for constitutional monarchy. Only a minority (mostly among Girondins) called for a republic. Still, the project of the constitutional monarchy was well underway and constitution prepared when Louis and MA decided to flee the country.
It became clear in the summer 1791 that Louis never really supported the idea of a constitutional monarchy. And yet, they did not proclaim the republic then and there - Louis got another chance. So things dragged for another whole year, but this is where the idea of a republic was truly born: through Louis' actions and treason.
So given that the king's treason and unwillingness to accept the constitutional monarchy led to the proclamation of the republic (and (in)directly, other things, such as the war with foreign powers and a surge of counter-revolutionary efforts to name a few), I can definitely say that things would've been different if he and MA honestly accepted constitutional monarchy.

I'm not going to write another long commentary on "quiet quitting" or "nobody wants to work anymore" or the "great resignation" or whatever. There's been enough of those.
What I AM going to write is a little bit of advice for those of you who are contemplating a career change, because workers have more power than ever and it's a great time to look for a new situation. You can take it or leave it--this is just what worked for me.
Family, school, and culture tried to keep me on a "white-collar professional" track, but I didn't like it and wasn't cut out for it. I have a BA in English and worked a customer service/tech support job for several years until the pandemic hit and we all got laid off (which was, truly, the best thing that ever happened to my professional life). I'm now a pastry chef and I love it.
It's not too late to start something new. Many jobs are willing to train you, as long as you have basic aptitude and willingness to learn. Search for apprenticeships and entry-level positions in fields that interest you, whether or not you have any previous experience.
Keep an open mind. See what jobs are urgently hiring and/or offering good wages, and do some research on what those jobs entail. Does it sound like fun? Send out a resume. You don't have anything to lose by trying or interviewing, even if it doesn't work out.
Write a brief cover letter explaining that you are changing careers, and although you don't have formal experience in [field], you are interested in the work and are willing to learn. Mention the skills that you learned in your previous job(s): customer interaction, critical thinking, time management, bookkeeping, confidence under pressure, whatever.
Don't get discouraged. You're awesome and brave, and if people don't want to hire you, that's their loss. Take your skills and experience to someone who will appreciate them, even if you have to be ghosted and rejected several times in the process.
If you can afford it, don't be afraid to take a little bit of a pay cut. (I got severance from my office job, and my wife makes a good salary, so we could afford to be choosy.) If you have to take a job you don't love in order to pay the bills, keep looking for something better! Again, don't get discouraged!
All experience is good experience. You learned things at your previous jobs, even if it doesn't seem "relevant." If nothing else, previous jobs can tell you what you're NOT cut out for, so you know what to avoid.
You have power in interviews. They're not just deciding whether or not they want to hire you--they're also showing you who they are as a business/industry, and you can (and should!) ask questions and set boundaries. Be firm, confident, interested, and polite.
If you're interested in a specific field, lurk in professional forums online to get a sense of the industry culture and what employers are looking for. Search for things like "electrician forum" or "women in trades" or "forest service lgbt friendly" and so forth.
Get all your paperwork in order. Make sure you have your resume updated and that you have access to transcripts, vital documents, and the names/phone numbers of past employers. Put all of this in one place.
Be bold! Think about what you wanted to be when you were 10, and look up what that job requires! Maybe you won't get to be a paleontologist-astronaut-ballerina, but you'll learn that you have a real talent for making artisanal ballet shoes (or whatever)!
