Hi there!
Here I am again. This time I made a very simple code that can be used in, for example, clubs! I tried to give it a bit of a light academia vibe. I plan to make different versions of this code with different aesthetics! I find this sort of code really useful for clubs since you can customize it for each page but still keep the same layout. You can also easily write down a lot of information!
Just like last time, I added a lot of notes, so reading my code might be easier. Hope I didn't go overboard with them. Feel free to use the code and ask questions if you need help!
Please don't remove the credits at the bottom of the code! ♥

World of 波特 [pinyin: bōtè]
In case you missed it, WoP is expanding with a server in Chinese! That makes sense since it's a HUGE market that you'd definitely want to get into, but what doesn't make sense is the way it's being handled at the moment.
Unlike all the other WoP servers in other languages the ordinary rules don't seem to apply. Usually the site leaders must be natives/native speakers and it's up to them to hire staff and teachers that know and use the language for their content. Everything must be written in the server's language and it has to be original material. You can't just copy from other sources, that's plagiarism and we have rules against that.
The Chinese server is set to launch January 29th, and a message has been sent out to fill the teacher positions. It outright says (I'm paraphrasing slightly) "you don't need to know Chinese, just use google translate and chat GPT to cover the minimal text requirements" (i.e. PT/BS and answering owls, maybe say hi in the chat). The message also makes clear that it's only temporary until they find actual native Chinese speakers that will fill the positions, and the newly implemented job limits don't apply here.
I can understand that it's hard to find native Chinese speakers within our current WoX community, and Chinese isn't just one language: it exists in many variants, Standard Chinese being the most common in China followed by Standard Mandarin and Cantonese in Asia (source: quick wikipedia research, I'm not an expert, don't quote me on this). In a way it makes sense to create something temporary to start with and then build from, but this doesn't feel right. This feels shoddy and disrespectful, using google translate for an entire website. Chinese is one of the most ancient languages in the world still spoken today, and like all other languages it's complex and nuanced beyond google translate.
It makes you wonder if the people who decided to launch a Chinese WoP server really thought things through. Troubleshooting and consequence analysis is important, and we've got plenty of people in the WoX community who could volunteer to do just that. We have so many experienced people who know exactly what to look out for and what to expect, what they'd personally consider red flags in a website and what they'd want to see as a user.
We don't have the full insight in what goes on in the creation of this new server, but looking at it from the outside a lot of us agree that it doesn't look good and we have concerns: Are the lessons copied from existing sites and just translated, and if so: do they have permission to use the content? Are the lessons just AI-generated? Who is going to translate all the Harry Potter-specific words and terminology (google translate doesn't do fictional concepts like polyjuice potion). Is this a serious attempt to expand the WoP family or is it a desperate attempt to get new users that will generate more income for the company?
If anyone knows, please share! Asks is open, and so is post submissions.
[note: yes, I googled "Chinese for Harry Potter" for the post title and that makes me a hypocrite, but in my opinion singular words and phrases is fine to translate by manually looking it up on the internet. What's not okay is running an entire text-based RP website through google translate and expect it to maintain a good quality. Spoiler: it does not.] [additional note: I could write a lot more but I won't, at least not in this post. There is more to be said though.]

HI! I thought I would give you a little sneakpeak of the new Code that I'm currently working on! This thing is my design and oh my god - I still can't believe that I managed to put the polygons on the positions where they should be (I still think I made some mistakes-). There is also a h u g e surprise coming at your way. Stay tuned. It'll be amazing!

Bludger Free
Tumblr media
It was finally time to do a little more than just hover on brooms and Pyxis could not have been more excited. That was until he learned the game was modified. Sure, it was a lot easier but what was the point in winning something if it was an easier version of the real thing? The bludgers and the snitch were what made Quidditch the sport that it was and excluding them basically meant that Professor Rhzevsky thought they were kids. Which they were but that wasn't the point. Like babies. Babies could play without bludgers. As for the snitch, well he really didn't care one way or another about chasing it but that was what ended the game.
When it came to selecting a team, he didn't really care who played Keeper. The point was for the Keeper to not have to worry all that much anyway. It seemed a given that he would pick Stevens and Owens. He had known them from playing against them back when he had played Quidditch briefly so he knew they were pretty serious about the game. It was also a given that the three would go in as Chasers.  As for the Keepers, he hadn't really paid attention to who had been picked as the three but that wouldn't matter.
The Hawkshead Formation was a tried and true tactic that he had enjoyed while actually playing and it seemed only right for the three to fall into that exact tactic the moment the ball was in the air and they had it. The first goal went to Owens while Pyxis and Stevens flanked him on either side to make sure he got to the goal. The poor Keeper hadn't even attempted to block the goal but then again, having three people flying at them on their brooms probably wasn't reassuring if they hadn't played before.
The game went back and forth with plenty of quaffle stealing and dropping on both sides. It wouldn't have been fair if only the three of them had kept their hands on the ball. Still, when there were two teams, only one could win.
The three hovered near each other with their heads together. "There's something I want to try," Stevens began.
Seeing as he studied Quidditch fouls like he needed them to breathe, it was either going to be great or horrible, no in-between.
"Let's hear it," Owens said as he glanced at the score.
"It'll be the difference in winning or losing," Pyxis reminded him.
Stevens nodded his head but there was that gleam in his eyes. "Thimblerig Shuffle. We haven't done it but I think we could pull it off and they wouldn't expect it."
"We haven't done it because it has a high chance of the quaffle being dropped," Owens started.
"I'm in," Pyxis interrupted him. "Not like this is any of our first time holding on to one. Plus it'll make this a little more exciting, yeah?"
Stevens was grinning and Owens rolled his eyes in reluctant agreement. "Yeah, whatever," he grumbled but he couldn't hide his smile when he started off with the quaffle and the other two fell into place on either side of him.
Pyxis fell back as Owens pulled ahead. Stevens guided his broom over to take the far right, Pyxis came in to the center position just in time to catch the quaffle before Owens pulled back into the right. The opposite team was headed in toward them and it was adorable to see them attempting a Hawkshead Attacking Formation when they couldn't really keep the formation tight like it was meant to be but he would give them credit for trying. Pyxis tossed the quaffle up high and tipped his broom down into a nosedive to go under them. Stevens jerked up on his to soar overhead and catch the quaffle while Owens pulled in to dive straight through the center of their formation causing the other three Chasers to separate.
Owens dropped the quaffle just as Pyxis pulled up, once again grasping it before Stevens and Owens headed straight for the three Keepers, causing them all to separate from the hoops leaving them open for the final score of the game. He might have only scored once during the game but it had been just for class. Still, ended the game with 21-20 wasn't all that bad. A win was still a win.

[flying: year one, week one.] The opportunities had seemed endless when the young boy first had arrived at Hogwarts. Mostly because it simply was so different from his home; even though he was a half-blood, his mother had made it very clear that she wanted to live in a real muggle way. Therefore, he didn’t know much else; sure, he had been taught a few useful spells from his father, but both of them would never go against his mother’s wishes cause she could be scary. Therefore, the young boy had never actually flown on a broom before. The only thing he had used a broom too, was to clean the floor whenever he spilt something. It, therefore, came as a shock to him that such a class like flying actually existed on Hogwarts. A place, where you actually didn’t use brooms to clean up after you. He wasn’t mad at his mother for never allowing him to try out this part of the magical world. He understood her concerns and accepted them. But, with the opportunity to finally try out something new, he was ready to take it. “How exciting, right?” The dark-haired boy, Tommy Jones, stood and looked very passionate at the broom which their Professor had in his hands. William had met Tommy during their very first day at Hogwarts; even though the other one clearly was a Slytherin, it hadn’t scared the young Hufflepuff away. He wasn’t much for stereotypes, and even though he learnt all about it from his classmates, which had been a bigger part of the wizarding community than him, he simply refused to believe in them. He was sure that even a Slytherin could be friendly, which was why he hadn’t even thought twice before befriending the young boy. The blonde-haired boy looked shortly towards Tommy before a small smile found it’s way to his lips. Flying definitely seemed exciting, but William couldn’t help but be slightly nervous about the thought of having to fly - he had never been a fan of heights, and it honestly seemed much harder than he wanted to believe it to be. “Yeah, sure is.” He answered in a low voice, as he crossed his arms in front of his chest. He tried to listen carefully to what the Professor had to say, but quickly lost every kind of idea when he heard that they had to write a letter. He furrowed his brows slightly, as he tilted his head a bit. “A letter?” The young boy repeated as he heard Tommy snort. “I can’t believe it. Here, I thought that we were going to do something exciting, but we just have to write a letter?” The dark-haired boy placed a hand on his hip, as he licked his lips slightly. Then he shook his head, clearly impatient. “I’m sure that he knows what he is doing,” William reassured him, as he caught one of the parchments which had flown directly towards him. His eyes quickly scanned the questions for anything exciting, but nothing really stood out for him. Yet, he decided to look optimistically on it. Tommy, on the other hand, looked like he just had been told that he should stand on one hand and drink a glass of milk. The young, blonde boy giggled slightly as he noticed the facial expression that the other one had across his face. It was first when Tommy heard his giggle, that he looked up. “What ya laughing at?” He asked, his Scottish accent being able to be heard clearly. “Nothing,” William answered him, still keeping his eyes on the other one. “What about just doing this quickly, and then getting out of here? I heard that there were some beautiful flowers down by the greenhouses. We should check them out!” He said cheerfully, which made Tommy shake his head slightly, but he didn’t dare to go against the other one’s wishes. The two sat down in the grass, under a large tree. Luckily, it wasn’t that cold in August, but they could still feel the chilly breeze against them. William leaned his back against the tree, as he placed the parchment on his knee, beginning to think about what he should write. “About me…” He mumbled as he bit himself slightly in the lip, trying to think about what to write. “You could write about how you talk way too much.” Tommy joked. The young boy had laid down on his stomach, placing the parchment on a book from his bag. William shook his head shortly, a small smile placed on his lips by the other one’s dumb idea. “Hm, I mean… I guess writing my name would make sense.” He mumbled, mostly for himself to hear. On top of his page, he wrote the name William Orchild and his age, 11. Besides that, he drew a small badger to represent his house - Hufflepuff. The boy smiled slightly over the stupid drawing before he decided to move on. “Hobbies,” William repeated, as he looked over the questions again. He tilted his head slightly before he finally decided to begin writing something down. He definitely liked reading, and animals were also a big passion of his. Honestly, he really wanted to work with animals when he got bigger. Maybe he could own his own zoo? Oh, or maybe he could become a healer? There were so many things that the young one was interested in. In the end, he decided to write down how his hobbies mostly included looking at different animals, reading and hanging out with his friends; three completely normal hobbies. His eyes quickly scanned over the next couple of questions. They were clearly quite easy to answer; he had never flown a broom before, because of his mothers which for no magic at home. And how he felt? Excited, yet nervous. Especially since he knew that so many people had knowledge within flying a broom, and he was one of those who simply didn’t know. He was most nervous about falling from the broom, considering that it seemed like it could hurt badly; but he had also heard lots of good things about flying from the older students, which gave him quite mixed feelings about everything. He quickly scribbled everything down in his very poor handwriting; he was just happy that it wasn’t him who was supposed to read it. A small smile fell on his face before he looked over the last question. Anything else he wanted to add? That was quite a wide question. He furrowed his brows slightly before he took a deep breath and began scribbling down; usually, he wouldn’t share much about himself with others, but he still felt like it was important that the Professor knew that he was terrified of heights, considering that he would soon have to cross that fear many times in the future. “Are you done?” Tommy asked as he looked back towards William. The blonde boy looked shortly over his paper, before looking up at Tommy, with a nod. The young Slytherin student had that glimpse in his eyes, that showed how he had come up with some kind of idea, which he thought was brilliant. “What?” William asked, wanting to hear whatever idea he had come up with. “Let’s race! Whoever gets to the Professor first, has to do the other one’s Potions homework for the next three days!” Tommy exclaimed, as he quickly stood up and began running. William couldn’t help but do the exact same. Somehow, Tommy had developed some kind of competition gene inside of him - and he was not going to lose. Even though Tommy had the lead, he was not going to let the other one win that easy. It didn’t take long for him to get up on the other one’s side, and as they neared the Professor, it was clear that they managed to get there at the same time.

Every little new feature or change is being met by constant negativity, and no, that is not constructive criticism nor “suggestions” as you write. It is negative feedback. It gives the feeling that nothing is ever good enough for you or your sites. And it drains. It is at a point where both Lessa and I, feel so burdened by it, that we don’t want to continue WoP work. Excerpt from Dan's response to the open letter from the WoP leaders (May 2023)
Honestly, I feel this and one of my concerns with this blog is that I don't want to make this worse if I can avoid it. But I also can't just stay quiet and say nothing, because then nothing will change. Even if I speak out it still might not change anything but at least I've given it a try.
It's sad to see that Dan and Lessa are losing their enthusiasm for WoP. It's a community that despite shrinking still has a lot to give, if you just give it a chance. I don't blame the site leaders for their open letter: the overall tone was negative, but that's what you get when your site leaders are passionate about their work. There will be feelings, good and bad, and people can feel strongly about things, especially things they care about. Their feelings are valid and didn't appear out of thin air, it was a direct result of years' worth of frustrations.
I'm not saying that all the blame here is on Dan, because it's not. Communication goes two ways and both sides have some responsibility in making sure it works. The fault often seems to lie with Dan but that doesn't necessarily mean the site leaders were faultless. That said though, most of their communication with Dan is to report issues that he should be made aware of. It's all negative stuff, and random praise over the choice of a font is unproductive and doesn't belong in a work conversation. Associating Dan with site problems probably has a negative effect in how site leaders think of him, since they mainly associate conversations with him with problems.
So here's a suggestion to pass on to Dan for me, in case anyone has a chance to sit down with him for a drink sometime: unproductive socialising with your site leaders is important. Provide them with positive experiences and memories to associate with you, not just problems. It might seem like unproductive socialising but it could be very productive, and maybe replace some of the automatic negativity with some new associations. I was a site leader once, I can remember a few chats that were just social and it was pretty to nice to chat with Dan in a different setting, putting work and positions aside and just talk about pets or favourite foods. To see him as a person and not the scary top boss whose decisions could make or break our beloved site.
Call me crazy, but I believe that Dan is a human being.
If you're only here for my criticism and find my interest in humans and communication off-putting, here's a more critical response to the excerpt:
I can't say if all constructive criticism and feedback from the site leaders through the years was actually just "negative feedback" as Dan says, but knowing some of these people I think it's most likely valid criticism and helpful suggestions that Dan may have taken the wrong way. Associating site leaders with problems could definitely be part of the problem here, creating negativity where there isn't any. A suggestion for an improvement doesn't equal "this sucks, you're pathetic" (even if some brains interpret it that way), it's just a suggestion for how to make something good even better. Constructive criticism can hurt and be upsetting, but it's also something very valuable if you handle it correctly.
Feedback is feedback, regardless of whether it's positive or negative. As a creator and leader it's important to be able to handle it productively, even when you want to throw the laptop out the window in frustration. Negative and positive are equally important and both must be taken into consideration, even if you find it irrelevant and dismiss it in the end. Both must be recognised as feedback, and acknowledged as such. Unless it's literally just whining about things that have no impact on anyone, in which case it's whining and you can politely tell the person to stop complaining unless they're gonna offer some constructive criticism to go with it.

Journal Entry #1
So, I got my Hogwarts letter 3 weeks ago. I was very excited, not too surprised, but excited for sure. After shopping for supplies and studying the best I could before arriving, while on the train, I saw Hogwarts for the first time. Such whimsical beauty in it’s architecture. After being sorted and settling in, I signed up for a total of seven classes, including Flying. I’m hoping to join the Ravenclaw Quidditch team in a few months, once try outs re-open. So far my homework grades have been above average and that’s nice, I still have so much to accomplish though. I made a few friends. Lilith and Lavender so far, two Gryffindor girls. I’m having a good time here. I bought a pygmy owl, he’s cute, and so far I’ve applied for the Quibbler writing position, should be fun if i get approved. :)
