It's THAT letter from Lang Junxia, read by his audio drama voice actor Guo Haoran in the middle of the AD season 1 live stream. He read it in one take, abridging it as he went. I cut out the chatter, shortened the too-long pauses as he read ahead, enhanced the audio slightly, and added subtitles. Links to all the resources are under the cut.
Best enjoyed with headphones.

Finish reading Joyful reunion. One of the best political plots I've read in danmei! The last letter from Lang Junxia made me cry. There are so many memorable characters, especially the side characters. One thing I dislike is the extras. Did not expect it to be cannon AU where everyone is alive and well. Idk why but it feels off to me.

Done with Joyful Reunion.
I don’t think I’ve felt like this in a long while after finishing a story. If ever? It’s quite novel to still feel devastated after a happy ending …
But overall I think I have to rank this pretty high not just on my list of favorite Feitian novels, but even in my top 10. Though that means I’ll have to bump something off the list then. But which one?
Tumblr media
Story wise, I’m reminded a lot of Luan Shi Wei Wang because of the wars and imperial shenanigans. In terms of characters though, I think Joyful Reunion has an edge - LSWW has one of my most beloved MLs in Li Zhifeng, and I loved You Miao for his brilliance. But other than the leads, I didn’t get attached to any of the side characters. (In fact, I wasn’t a fan of Zhao Chao at all.) Now with JR … not just Duan Ling and Wu Du, but Li Jianghong, Li Yanqiu, Mu Qing, Chang Liujun, Batu, Zongzheng, Helian Bo, Xunchun, Ding Zhi, Master Fei, even Sun Ting and Shulu Rui … but most of all LANG JUNXIA. This may be the first time my favorite character from a story was not one of the leads. Without spoiling much, let’s just say that the angst I felt was because of Li Jianghong and Lang Junxia.

Welcome to the 'Best Character with [X] surname' polls!
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
If you can't find a surname, it's because I couldn't find enough candidates (at least 3 from 3 distinct medias) to compete. Feel free to submit candidates!
I will be posting several polls at a time, so do come back and check this masterpost to remember which polls are ongoing, who the winners are, and who's coming up next!
Currently ongoing polls:/Chao/Xin/Ran/Sang/Miao/Cang/Yao/Zang/Chong/Nangong/Kong/Hai/Deng/Kang

Three Families Divide Jin
This was intended to be a translation of the first part of the Tongjian jishi benmo通鑑紀事本末 ("Comprehensive Mirror Chronicling Affairs from Beginning to End") which is a rearrangement of the Zizhi Tongjian into topics rather than a strictly chronology done by Yuan Shu (1131-1205) . However I quickly realized that for this particular topic there is no rearrangement done, as the ZZTJ after starting the chronicle in 403 BC with the elevation of Wei, Zhan and Han immediately launches into an extended retrospective. So I guess it's actually just a translation of the beginning of the ZZTJ. I have reluctantly decided to skip Sima Guang's long commentary at the start, and after the death of the Elder of Zhi in the interest of actually completing anything. Note that "Han" here refer throughout to the Warring states era state of Han韓 rather than the later Han漢 empire.
Three Families Divide Jin
23rd Year of King Weilie of Zhou [403 BC], began to instruct Jin's great men Wei Si, Zhao Ji, and Han韓 Qian to be Marquises.
Earlier, Count Xuan of Zhi wanted to use Yao as heir. Zhi Guo said:
He is not as good as Xiao. That which people find worthy with Yao are five, that which he does not match up in is one. His beautiful temple-hair, his tallness and large size are admirable. That he shoots and drives with the strength of his feet is worthy. That his skill and craft are fully provided is worthy. That his artful writings are articulate and graceful is worthy. That he is strong, resolute, decisive and daring is worthy. It is like this, but he is extremely inhumane. In case he used his five worthy qualities to climb past people, but uses his inhumaneness to act against them, who would be able to treat with him? If in the end [you] install Yao, the Zhi lineage will surely be wiped out.
He did not listen. Zhi Guo separated from the family with the Grand Scribe, and became the Fu clan.
[Wei Zhao says: Count Xuan of Zhi was the Jin dignitary Xun Li's son, Shen. Yao was Count Xuan's son, [known as] the Elder of Zhi. His posthumous title was Count Xiang. Zhi Gao was a kinsman of the Zhi clan. Xiao was Count Xuan's common-born son.]
Among Count Jian of Zhao's sons, the elder was called Bolu and the younger Wuxu. He wanted to set up the heir, nu did not know who should be installed. He therefore wrote a speech with teachings and admonishing in two letters, and gave them to his two sons, saying:
Vigilantly familiarize yourself with it!
After three years, he asked about it. Bolu and not been able to study his speech. He demanded his letter, but he had already lost it. He asked Wuxu, he recited his speech with great practice. He demanded his letter, he produced it from within his sleeves and laid it before him. And so Count Jian considered Wuxu to be worthy, and installed him as heir.
Count Jian sent Yin Duo to be at Jinyang. He inquired, saying:
Use it as silk from a cocoon? Or use it as a protecting shield?
Count Jian said:
A protecting shield!
Yin Duo reduced the number of his households. Count Jian spoke to Wuxu, saying:
If the state of Jin has difficulties, regardless of Yin Duo being of little importance, and regardless of Jinyang being far away, be sure to use is as somewhere to return to.
[Hu Sansheng says: “To extract the people's vital bounty is like pulling a silk thread from a cocoon.”]
When Count Xuan of Zhi passed, Count Xiang of Zhi had the government. He feasted Count Kang of Han and Count Huan of Wei at Lantai. The Elder of Zhi made fun of Count Kang and insulted Duan Gui. Zhi Guo heard about it, and admonished, saying:
If a ruler does not prepare against difficulties, difficulties will surely arrive!
The Elder of Zhi said:
Difficulties will be due to me. I will not be in difficulties, who would dare to raise them up!
He replied, saying:
Not so. The Book of Xia has this: “One man makes three mistakes, will his enemies be made clear? The unseen must be planned for.” In all cases the Lordly Man is able to pay attention to small things, and for that reason he has no large worries. Now the ruler in a single feast then has shamed a lord of men and his minister. Again to not make preparations but say “they do not dare to raise up difficulties”, nothing then is impossible. If black flies, ants, wasps and scorpions are all able to injure a person, then how much more a lord and his minister.
He did not listen.
The Elder of Zhi requested land from Count Kang of Han. Count Kang intended not to give it. Duan Gui said:
The Elder of Zhi is fond of gains and is headstrong. If we do not give it, he will attack us. It is not as good as giving it. That one is accustomed to obtaining land, and will surely request it from other people. [If] other people will not give it, he will surely turn against them with troops. Afterwards we will obtain our escape from worries and wait for a reversal in affairs.
Count Kang said:
Good.
He sent messengers to bring a town of ten thousand families to the Elder of Zhi. The Elder of Zhi was pleased. Again he demanded land from Count Huan of Wei. Count Huan intended not to give it. Ren Zhang said:
What is the reason for not giving?
Count Huan said:
He has no reason to exhort land is the reason for not giving.
Ren Zhang said:
He has no reason to exhort land, the various great men will surely be afraid. Us giving him land, and the Elder of Zhi will surely be haughty. When that one is haughty, he will make light of his foes. When these are afraid, they will be affectionate with each other. Use troops of those affectionate with each other and wait for a person to make light of his foes, and the Zhi clan's lifespan will surely not be long. The Book of Zhou says: “If you want to defeat him, you must for the moment assist him. If you want to take from him, you must for the moment give to him. What the ruler [said] is not as good as giving it to him, and so make haughty the Elder of Zhi. Afterwards we can chose who to make contact with and make plans against the Zhi clan. What recourse is there in for us alone to be the Zhi clan's target!
Count Huan said:
Good.
Then he gave him a town of ten thousand families.
The Elder of Zhi also demanded the lands of Cai and Gaolang from Count Xiang of Zhao [i.e. Wuxu who had succeed his father, Count Jian.] Count Xiang did not give it. The Elder of Zhi was angry, and led the forces of Han and Wei to attack the Zhao clan. Count Xiang wanted to set out, and said:
Where can we flee?
His followers said:
Changzi is nearby, moreover the walls are thick and complete.
Count Xiang said:
The people exhausted their strength completing them. To also be wrecked and die defending them, who of them will be with us!
The followers said:
Handan's granaries and armouries are full
Count Xiang said:
[We] extracted the people's vital bounty to fill it. Also because of that to kill them, who of them will be with us! Those at Jinyang belonged to the Previous Ruler and were treated generously by Yin Duo. The people will surely be agreeable.
Therefore he fled to Jinyang.
The three families used the people of the state to besiege and flood him, that of the city walls which was not immersed measured three ban [3 ban = 6 chi]. They submerged stoves to produce frogs, and the people had no rebellious thoughts. The Elder of Zhi went to the water. Count Huan of Wei steered and Count Kang of Han was on his right side in the carriage. [A traditional chariot had a crew of three. The noble, the driver, and the bodyguard on the right.] The Elder of Zhi said:
I have now learned water can be used to destroy a person's state.
Count Huan elbowed Count Kang. Count Kang trod on the back of Count Huan's foot. By using the Fen River he could flood Anyi, and with the Jiang River he could flood Pingyang.
Xi Ci spoke to the Elder of Zhi, saying:
Han and Wei are certain to turn against you.
The Elder of Zhi said:
My Count, how can you know that?
Xi Ci said:
It is due to people's affairs [I] know it. In all cases troops from Han and Wei have been used to attack Zhao. When Zhao perishes, the difficulties are sure to reach Han and Wei. Now the pledge is to win against Zhao and then divide its land into three. The walls that are not immersed measures three ban. People and horses eat each other. The city will surrender within days, yet the two Counts have no joyful resolve, but have an anxious appearance. If they are not turning against you, then why?
Next day, the Elder of Zhi reported Xi Ci's words to the two Counts. The two Counts said:
This is a case of a slanderous person intending to be the Zhao clan's wandering persuader, making the ruler be suspicious of the two families and negligent in the attack on the Zhao clan. If not so, why in that case are the two families not profiting from morning to evening by dividing the fields of the Zhao clan, but intend to be in precarious difficulty in an affair with no possibility for success!
The two Counts went out. Xi Ci entered and said:
Why did my ruler report your subject's words to the two Counts?
The Elder of Zhi said:
Sir, how did you know that?
He replied, saying:
Your subject saw them looking at your subject in particular, and then scurried away, and [I] knew your subject had obtained their feelings.
The Elder of Bo did not make amends, and Xi Ci requested to be sent to Qi.
Count Xiang of Zhao sent Zhang Mengtan to furtively go out and see the two Counts. He said:
Your subject has heard that when the lips are gone, the teeth are cold. Now the Elder of Zhi leads Han and Wei to attack Zhao. When Zhao is destroyed, Han and Wei will be next.
The two Counts said:
In our hearts we know that it is so. [We] fear if the affair is not be carried out when the plan leaks, then the calamity would become extreme.
Zhang Mengtan said:
The plan goes out from the two Counts' mouths, and goes in your subject's ears. What is the harm!
The two Counts therefore furtively made a pledge with Zhang Mengtan, that on the appointed day they would dispatch [their forces]. Count Xiang sent people at night to kill the functionary who guarded the dikes, and then breach the water to flood into the Elder of Bo's army. The Elder of Bo's army put a stop to water but was in disorder. Han and Wei flanked and then struck them, Count Xiang commanded his solders to assault them in front. They greatly defeated the Elder of Bo's multitudes, and thereupon killed the Elder of Bo and entirely wiped out the members of the Zhi clan. Only Fu Guo survived.
The three families divided the fields of the Zhi clan. Count Xiang of Zhao lacquered the Elder of Zhi's head, and used it as a drinking vessel. The Elder of Bo's subject Yu Rang wished to get revenge on him. He therefore pretended to be a punished criminal, tucked a spoon-head dagger, and entered within Count Xiang's palace to plaster the lavatory. Count Xiang went to the lavatory, felt his heart race. He search it and captured Yu Rang. His left and right wished to kill him. Count Xiang said:
The Elder of Zhi died without descendants, and yet this person wishes to revenge him, truly a right-principled gentleman. I will respectfully release him, and that is all.
He therefore let him go. Yu Rang again lacquered his body to become leprous, and swallowed charcoal to become mute. He went to beg at the market, his wife did not recognize him. He went to see his friend. His friend recognized him, and he began sobbing at him, saying:
Due to Sir's talents, [if you were] to serve Zhao Meng as a subject, [you] would surely obtain affection and favour. Sir would then have what [you] wished to have, would that not be easy? Why then make yourself miserable like this? The search for vengeance, would not also be difficult!
Yu Rang said:
Then [I] would have given my pledge as a subject while also seeking to kill him, this is to have two hearts. Overall, what I am doing is extremely difficult, that is all. However, what I am doing perhaps might shame those in later generations Under Heaven who are subjects with two hearts in their breasts.
Count Xiang set out and Yu Rang hid under a bridge. Count Xiang arrived at the bridge, and his horse startled. He searched it and got Yu Rang, and consequently killed him.
Count Xiang, because Bolu had not been installed, although he had five sons, was not willing to set up an heir. He ennobled Bolu's son at Dai. He was called Lord Cheng of Dai and passed young. He installed his son Huan as the Zhao clan's heir. Count Xiang passed, and his younger brother, Count Huan, expelled Huan, and installed himself. After one year, he passed. The people of the Zhao clan said:
Count Huan's instalment was not Ruler Xiang's idea.
Therefore they together killed his son[s]. They then welcomed Huan# and installed him. This was Count Xian. Count Xian begot Ji, this was Marquis Lie. Wei Si was the grandson of Count Huan Wei, this was Marquis Wen. Count Kang of Han begot Count Wu. Count Wu begot Qian. This was Marquis Jing.
Marquis Wen of Wei used the Bu Zixia and Tian Zifang as teachers. Always when he passed by the cottage of Duangan Mu, he was certain to bow toward the front crossbar [on his chariot]. Many of the Four Regions' worthy gentlemen reverted to him. Marquis Wen was dranking wine with the crowd of subjects. They were having fun but then it was raining. He called for his carriage, wanting to go out into the wilderness. Left and right said:
Today we are drinking and having fun, and the sky is also raining. Why would my lord go?
Marquis Wen said:
I had an appointment to hunt with the gamekeeper. Though we are having fun, how could [I] not meet with someone at the appointed time.
Then he left and and put a stop to it himself.
Han [wanted] to borrow a force from Wei to attack Zhao. Marquis Wen said:
This Orphan and Zhao are brothers. [I] do not dare to hear the instruction.
Wei [wanted] to borrow a force from Wei to attack Han. Marquis Wen responded to them in the same way. The two states were both angry and left. Later they understood Marquis Wen was reconciling them, and both came to court in Wei. Wei hence was first to be great among the Three Wei. The various feudal princes were unable to contend whit them.

Book 5, Epilogue (Part 1 of 2)
Two years later.
Chen’s main forces, two hundred thousand strong, assemble for battle at the foot of Mount Jiangjun. Meanwhile, across from them is the Yuan forces, as vast and numerous as raindrops in the ocean.
Both sides counted, there are four hundred thousand men here altogether, and not a single horse lets out a neigh. Snow flutters in the air. The melody of that song once more rises in Duan Ling’s memories.
The Mongolian forces part to make way. Borjigin Batu steps out in full armour, while Duan Ling steers his warhorse to the front of his formation. They face off against each other at a distance.
A gale is rising. Chen and Yuan war banners flap loudly in the biting cold.
“It’s time to begin,” Duan Ling says gently.
Clad in black armour from head to toe, Wu Du comes to Duan Ling’s side unhurriedly.
Snow whips violently as it spirals through the storm. On the distant horizon, a million souls of departed war gods seem to fall to earth, trailing white light behind them like meteors, and as they reach the battlefield, each turns into a shadow that has long-guarded the territories of Great Chen, urging on their noble steeds, galloping through thin air.
“It’s time to begin!” Someone’s voice is shouting, “Let’s fight!”
In his black armour, Xie You heads to the vanguard position.
“Sons of Great Chen —!” Duan Ling’s voice and Xie You’s decisive shout blend together.
The voices of the Chen army are as loud as the roaring of a tsunami.
The Silver River above has become a boundless wind of light, and that man, on his White Tiger steed, spreads a war god’s wings as he soars through a vast sea of light.
White Tiger of the western sky, lord of war!
His steed pads through the air from the horizon where the sky meets the earth, the radiant silver light that surrounds him shining onto the battlefield.
“Are you willing to die for His Majesty?”
Again, that call is answered by a furious, unified howl that seems to topple the mountains and overturn seas, loud enough to put a crack in the firmament.
My son.
That gentle voice rings out next to Duan Ling, and in his armour of light, with stars as his cape and the moon as his crown, dragging the Zhenshanhe behind him, Li Jianhong flies towards the battlefield.
“Dad.” In Duan Ling’s eyes is a dazzling night sky and the eternal Silver River.
It has been there all along.
A million years may pass, and it would remain the same.
“Let the battle begin.” Duan Ling raises the Zhenshanhe and points it into the distance.
All at once, two hundred thousand soldiers of Southern Chen, under the blessing and protection of generations of heroic spirits who’d sacrificed themselves for their homeland, charge at the Yuan army.
In Jiangzhou, a thousand miles away, light snow swirls like dust through the sky. Li Yanqiu stands on an upper storey in a rear palace hall and looks up at the drifting snowflakes.
“They ought to have arrived in Mount Jiangjun by today. Jianhong, please watch over Ruo’er.”
On the snow fields beneath Mount Jiangjun, the front line on both sides launch their attacks under the call of a signal horn. The new Northern Command kicks up powder and runs into the battlefield.
Countless moments in time have been frozen during this one battle, and the historians set down many episodes in ink: how Zheng Yan leads his troops to outflank the enemy, charging into their formation before having to retreat for his wounds; how Wu Du is forced off his horse after prolonged fighting, and Duan Ling rushing in to rescue him; how the Mongolian Army Supervisor Timur is killed by Wu Du with a single strike of his sword.
Qinchatai’s subordinate Chaghan Temur is shot dead with an arrow, and his men choose to fight to the death rather than surrender.
Xie You takes his men to attack the Mongolian army from the flank, but due to Borjigin Batu’s deft direction, is unable to gain full victory …
The first battle between four hundred thousand men drenches ten thousand miles of snowfields in blood, turning the entrance to the canyon into a meat grinder. The Chen army had gained the overwhelming upper hand almost as soon as the two armies meet, yet the Mongolians insist on fighting to the death rather than retreating; as they are driven off a precipice by Zheng Yan’s troops, their landing sets off a chain-reaction avalanche.
Hundreds of Mongolian soldiers had fallen off the precipice, and the avalanche buries tens of thousands of Mongolian soldiers, but the Chen army is also split into two forces.
Duan Ling sets up an ambush for Batu with his troops, and as soon as they meet face to face, Duan Ling shoots Batu off his horse. Amga rushes in, putting his life on the line to save Batu, bringing him back to their side.
“Catch him!” Someone is howling in Mongolian. “All we have to do is catch him and we win!”
By now the Mongolian army is at the end of its tether; counting those buried by the avalanche they number less than one hundred and twenty thousand. Yet with their backs up against the wall, they would rather die than surrender — even in this chaos, they’re thinking about catching the Chen crown prince in order to dissolve the other side’s offensive.
Chen runs into even fiercer resistance then, and their main forces are split apart by the assault. The vanguard troops, led by Wu Du, and the main force, led by Duan Ling, are separated by the avalanche.
“Your Highness! They’re catching up to us!” Someone howls.
“How many of them are there?!” Duan Ling only has a mere two thousand men or so left at his side. The rest are with Xie You.
Someone yells, “Twenty-thousand!”
“Go around the canyon!” Duan Ling shouts decisively, “Rendezvous with the vanguard as soon as possible! We’ve already won! This is all they have left!”
Twenty thousand Mongolian soldiers launch their assault downhill, and snow rolls towards the Chen forces like a tsunami. Under his bodyguards’ escort, Duan Ling charges at the end of the canyon.
“I’ll hold them off!” Shulü Rui shouts, “Go ahead, Your Highness!”
Duan Ling looks back behind him. Shulü Rui had already reorganised his men into a force to hold off the pursuing twenty-thousand Mongolian soldiers, and a melee ensues as soon as the two sides meet. Many of the soldiers also get past the defences to rush towards Duan Ling.
The guards escort Duan Ling to the end of the canyon, but another thousand soldiers are charging at them from the valley in front of them.
“Benxiao! I leave it all to you!” Duan Ling shouts.
A stray arrow hits Duan Ling, the arrowhead glancing off his White Tiger armour. Duan Ling charges into the fray, ignoring any danger that may befall his person, and he sees a man with his left arm covered in layers of cloth rushing at him holding a heavy two-handed greatsword. The sword is also coming down on Duan Ling’s head with all the weight of a greatsword!
The sword throws up an arc of light, and Duan Ling recognises Amga’s blood-stained face behind the weapon. However, he has no way to retreat, so all he can do is turn his shoulder to the blade to take Amga’s strike!
But as the force behind that blow is about to shatter his shoulder, a black silhouette flits by, steps hard on the saddle with one foot, and wraps an arm around Duan Ling. His left fist punches the sword, causing a dull metallic thud that rings painfully through Duan Ling’s eardrums.
The man wraps his arms around Duan Ling and leaps away from Benxiao, while Benxiao charges into the enemy’s ranks and draws a thousand of their pursuers away with it.
The momentum takes Duan Ling into the snow, but as he’s about to roll off, a strong hand grabs him, locking their fingers together and dragging him out of the snowfield. Duan Ling’s ring finger slips and feels emptiness where the man’s pinky finger ought to be.
“Kill them!” Amga howls.
“Lang Junxia?!” Duan Ling says, his voice trembling.
Lang Junxia is dressed in a faded warrior’s robe, tattered and worn in places.
“How long have you been following me? What are you doing here?!”
“Shh, don’t ask,” Lang Junxia says, his eyes smiling as he put two fingers of his right hand between his lips to whistle. Benxiao gallops back to them.
“Get on the horse!” Lang Junxia shouts, pushing Duan Ling once again onto his horse. He then gets on the saddle behind him.
“Be ready to shoot!” Lang Junxia asks, “Are you cold?”
Duan Ling is dressed in armour, and his eyebrows and hair are covered in snow. Benxiao comes to an abrupt stop as it faces a thousand soldiers led by Amga.
“I’m not … not cold. I’m very warm.”
“Even your voice is shivering. Where’s your bow?”
Duan Ling takes the bow from its sling and wraps his fingers around the grip. Amga toses his greatsword into the snow and draws the sabre at his side. The Mongolian soldiers step back. They get ready to charge.
“You’re dead, crown prince,” Amga says. “No one can protect you anymore.”
“He still has me,” Lang Junxia murmurs.
Lang Junxia rides with Duan Ling behind him, his clear eyes reflecting the one thousand Mongolian soldiers before him as well as those archers who’d just appeared on the cliff above. They have their bows nocked and drawn, aiming towards the centre.
Duan Ling aims his arrow at a point in the distance, so nervous he doesn’t dare breathe.
“Did you see the letter?” Lang Junxia says.
“What?” Duan Ling asks with a frown.
Lang Junxia is quiet for a beat before continuing, “It’s in the Qingfengjian’s scabbard. This isn’t a very good sword, but I’ll try to block them for a while. It’s your turn to cover me this time, Duan Ling. Keep your eyes on the cliff across the way. I leave it in your hands.”
Duan Ling’s heart seems to stop. He fires off the first arrow. Then Lang Junxia is shouting, “Gup!”
With two people on its back, Benxiao gallops towards the canyon’s exit. At the same time, a thousand Mongolian soldiers launch their attack, and charge at them under Amga’s lead!
As quickly as possible, Duan Ling fires off one arrow after another into the enemy ranks.
In the very instant the two sides meet, Lang Junxia crash sidelong into Amga, his long sword flicking up to meet his sabre!
Naturally there’ll be people there to protect you all through your life. There’s no need for you to stand before me …
If I failed to protect you, then I’d have failed in my duty. If that day ever comes, even if I’m not dead someone will come finish me off. But that’s no matter. Once I die, there’ll naturally be plenty of others who’d line up to stand in front of you to block blades and swallow swords for your sake …
The voice is coming from a long way away, but it also seems like it’s right by his ear.
In the split-second they brush past each other, Lang Junxia and Amga exchange blows.
Amga thrusts his sabre into Lang Junxia’s chest. Lang Junxia quickly grabs the blade with his right hand, then clapping his palms together, he turns the blade and locks it into place between his ribs so that it can’t penetrate his shoulder to harm the Duan Ling seated behind him.
Then with a beautiful flick of his wrist, he pierces Amga’s throat soundlessly with his sword.
And just like that, Benxiao rushes past the enemy formation, kicking up powder as it leaves their pursuers far, far behind them in the snow.
Duan Ling turns back to look. He shouts, “We’re through!”
“Very … good.”
“You’re hurt! Lang Junxia!” Duan Ling touches the back in front of him and draws back a hand covered in blood. The tiniest bit of metal blade is protruding from Lang Junxia’s back.
Benxiao gallops farther and farther; it gallops into a forest, then out of it, leaping off a cliff, landing then charging down a snow-covered hill, kicking up frantic waves of snow in its wake, only stopping once it’s carried the two of them into a ravine.
On a snowy clearing in the deep ravine, Lang Junxia collapses sideways into the snow.
Duan Ling dismounts, and a stumble takes him back a step. Lang Junxia struggles to his feet in the snow, but no matter how hard he tries he can’t seem to stand up straight.
When Duan Ling notices the sabre buried in Lang Junxia’s chest, he lets out a despairing scream — but Lang Junxia firmly pushes him away.
“Don’t … look.” Blood seeps out of Lang Junxia’s mouth. With a stumble, he forces himself to stand up straight. He pulls the sabre out of his own chest and coughs up a mouthful of blood. He falls backwards.
Duan Ling runs towards him, and as Lang Junxia topples over, he falls into Duan Ling’s arms.
A gale begins to blow, and snow curls through the wind, obscuring everything for miles around.
In the midst of a blizzard, Duan Ling kneels on a boundless snowfield. Snowflakes flutter through the air. Lang Junxia lies in Duan Ling’s arms. He reaches up, shivering, struggling to run his fingers over Duan Ling’s cheek.
“Lang Junxia …” Duan Ling says, choking back tears, “Why did you have to come back.”
The corner of Lang Junxia’s mouth curls up almost imperceptibly.
It’s almost like they’ve gone back to that gentle evening many years ago in Shangjing; just like this, he’d lain in the snow, and a little Duan Ling had wrapped his arms around him, using all of his strength to drag him back into the house.
"Because … I …
"Wanted to … see if … you’d grow up … to become … a … very good …
"Little …
“… Emperor.”

One of the fun in reading this is guessing which side each of the 3 renowned assassins is really on and in the end if they'll be against Duan Ling's ascension to the throne or not.

5th Month, renchen [4 June], Qi Hong and others fought with Diao Mo. Mo was greatly defeated. Yong and Ying ran for the Southern Mountains, and fled to Wan. The Xianbei in Hong and others' section greatly plundered Chang'an, killing more than 20 000 people.
6th Month, bingchen [28 June], New Moon, [the Emperor] arrived from Chang'an and ascended the old hall, with mournful emotion and flowing tears
Winter, 10th Month [22 November – 21 December], the Minister of Works, the King of Fanyang, Xiao, passed a away. Xiao's Senior Clerk, Liu Yu, murdered the King of Chengdu, Ying.
11th Month, gengwu [8 January], the Emperor collapsed in the Xianyang Hall. At the time he was 48 years old.
(Liu Yuan)
3rd Year of Yuanxi [306 AD], Winter, 12th Month [1 January 306 – 30 January], used his General of the Van, Liu Jing as Envoy Holding Tally, Great Chief Controller of Conquering and Chastising. He intercepted and struck the Inspector of Bing province, Liu Kun, at Banqiao [“Ban Bridge”], and was defeated by Kun. Kun thereupon occupied Jinyang. His Palace Attendant Liu Yin and Brilliantly Blessed Grandee of the Right Wang Yu advanced to admonished Yuan, saying:
Your Highness, since [you] raised troops and onwards, bit by bit there has already been a single cycle, yet [we have] solely defended merely a region, the kingly power is not yet shaking. If indeed [you] were able to instruct the generals to set out in four directions and determine the moment with a single throw, to put on display Liu Kun's head, settle East of the He, establish the title of Emperor, strike the drums to march and go south, overcome Chang'an then make the capital there, and use the multitudes of Guanzhong to roll up Luoyang, is like pointing to your palm, that is all. These were means by which August Emperor Gao created and began the vast foundation, overcoming and exterminating strong Chu.
Yuan was pleased and said:
This is in an Orphan's heart.
Yuan advanced to occupy Hedong. He attacked and robbed Puban and Pingyang, both were lost to him. Yuan thereupon entered to have his capital at Puzi. The counties, ramparts and fortifactions belonging to Hedong and Pingyang fully surrendered.
(WS001 & WS095: 11th Year [305 AD], Liu Yuan attacked Sima Teng. Teng again begged for troops. Emperor Huan [Tuoba Yitou] personally led 10 000 light cavalry to save Teng, he beheaded Yuan's general Qiwu Tun. Yuan fled south to Puzi.)
(JS062: Liu Yuan at the time was at Lishi, the distance between them was more or less 300 li Kun secretly dispatched to go among the assorted miscreants of his section. The surrendered were more than 10 000 groups. Yuan was very much afraid. He thereupon walled Puzi and settled there.)

(Li Xiong)
1st Year of Yanping [“Cloudless Peace”], 3rd Month [31 March – 29 April], Fan Changsheng drove in a plain cart to go to Chengdu from Xishan [lit. “Western Mountain”]. Xiong welcomed him at the great gate, held an official's tablet and led him in to sit. Changsheng requested Xiong sit face to face. Then he was designated Imperial Chancellor and was venerated as Fan the Worthy. Changsheng urged Xiong to declare the venerated title.
His junior cousin Zhi was Liu's son. Since he did not accompany the ranked order, he executed him.
Summer, 6th Month [28 June – 26 July], Xiong hence presumptuously acceded to the Emperor's throne. A great amnesty, and changed the year [to Yanping]. The state was titled Great Cheng. He retroactively venerated his father Te as the Luminous [jing] Emperor, with the temple title First Founder [shizu]. His mother, Ms. Luo, became August Empress Dowager.
(JS004: 2ndYear [of Yongxing], … 6th Month [8 July – 6 August 305], … Li Xiong presumptuously acceded to the Emperor's throne, the state was titled Shu. … 8th Month [5 September – 4 October 305], Li Xiong dispatched his general Li Xiang# to rob Han'an.)
(Since other sources agree that Li Xiong declared himself emperor in 306, JS004 appear to be mistaken in placing it in the year before, in 305. Li Xiang#'s attack on Han'an is not recorded in other sources, so it is unclear if this event should then also be moved to 306, 8thMonth [26 August – 23 September 306].)
10thMonth[22 November – 21 December], added to Fan Changsheng to be Grand Teacher of Heaven and Earth (HYGZ: Grand Teacher of the Four Seasons, the Eight Nodes, Heaven and Earth), ennobled Marquis of Xishan (WS: King of Xishan). Also his private retinue was not to prepare for army campaigns, and their taxes and levies were all to enter his household.
(HYGZ: [Fan] the Worthy's name was Changsheng [“Long Life”], one name him Yanjia [“Lengthy-lasting”], and also name him Jiuzhong [“Nine-Doubled”]. One calls him Zhi, courtesy name Yuan. He was a native of Danxing in Fuling.)
(The “Eight Nodes” of the year were the equinoxes, the solstices, and the beginning of each season.)
Xiong at the time had roughly began to establish a state, and habitually had no laws or systems. The various generals put their confidence in his graciousness, and each contended for the distributed ranks. His Prefect of the Masters of Writing, Yan Shi, sent up a missive, saying:
In all cases when making a state's regulations and laws, it is always best to continue the old. In the former affairs of Han and Jin, only the Grand Commandant and the Great Marshal managed troops. The Grand Tutor and Grand Guardian were offices for a father or older brother, posts for discussing the Way. The Minister over the Masses and the Minister of Works were in charge of the five teachings and the proportions of the nine soils. Qin set up the Imperial Chancellor with overall leadership of the ten thousand moments. At the end of Wu of Han, he went beyond to use the Great General to control government affairs.
Now state and patrimony are just now founded, and all the hundred are not yet ready. When the various excellencies and great generals are distributed rank proportionally, they yield and then warily request to arrange and set up. This and the standards of the past odes do not correspond, [we] should establish rules and norms to use as models and systems.
Xiong followed him.
(Record of Past and Present Blades and Swords: Li Xiong of Later Shu in the 1st Year of Yanping made 500 blades, the text said “Mount the Horse” in the clerical script.)

(Zhang Gui)
1st Year of Guanxi [306 AD], Emperor Hui collapsed. He dispatched Senior Clerk Beigong Chun, Marshal Zhang Zuan, Separate Carriage Yin Jian to offer a petition at the Imperial Capital.
That Year, he greatly walled Guzang. Its walls had originally been built by the Xiongnu, south to north they were 7 li and east to west 3 li long. The ground had a dragon-like shape, and for that reason it was named Wolong [“Sleeping Dragon”] City.
Earlier, at the end of Han, the Broad Scholar Hou Jin of Dunhuang spoke to the people of his group, saying:
Later, the spring water west of the city will dry up, and there will be a pair of watch towers erected on its bank, they and the eastern gate will gaze on each other. From their middle there will be a hegemon setting out.
Arriving at the middle of Wei's Jiaping era [249 – 253], the commandery officials indeed erected a school building, and built a pair of watch towers beside the spring. They and the eastern gates actually gazed on each other.
Also there was a guest who appraised [his?] seal and said:
Fortune will transmit to the sons and grandsons, and the oldest will have the Western Xia. When the Passes and Luo are overturned and lost, the lands of Liang alone will be kept whole.
Reaching this point, the Zhang clan thereupon were hegemons in Hexi [“West of the He”].
