GUYSSSS ZHAO LUSI LIKED MY MATH ANALYSIS (after it got stolen and reposted a bunch of times :/ ) (translation at end)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Third and Fourth pics: the post of whoever stole my pic the last time
A Non-rigorous Trigonometric Mini-study of Love Like The Galaxy (星汉灿烂). Math nerds and cdrama fans will both fall speechless.
Watching Love Like Galaxy episode 6 (around 33 minutes in), I was super intrigued by the riddle Yuan Shanjian presents about his well’s water level, and then I proceeded to waste an hour understanding Niaoniao's solution and two hours creating this post. Without further ado, read on to find out how you too can win a jar of 千里醉 wine and catch Ling Buyi’s eye the next time you time travel to ancient China!
THE PROBLEM
Using only a 3-foot ruler, measure the distance between the well opening and water surface. (Notice how Niaoniao cheats by also using a tree branch and her brain.)
NIAONIAO’S SOLUTION
Niaoniao’s script:
井径二尺半,
立三尺木于井上,
从木末望水岸入径一尺。
My translation:
The well diameter is 2.5 feet.
Prop the 3-foot ruler on top of the well.*
Looking at the water edge from the top of the stick**, the stick enters*** the diameter by 1 foot****.
“Foot”notes:
*Refer to fig. 1.
**Refer to fig. 2; water edge refers to "where the water surface touches the well side on the opposite side of the well from where the 3-ft ruler is”. Refer to fig. 3 for where exactly she’s looking.
***This is a little confusing, but it's essentially "the ruler juts into the well by 1 foot.” Refer to fig. 4 for my interpretation of Niaoniao’s pov.
****Refer to fig. 5 for how Niaoniao measures the “1 foot”.
Figures:
Figure 1: Step 2, Niaoniao propping ruler on well
Tumblr media
Figure 2: Step 3, Niaoniao looking at water edge from stick top
Tumblr media
Figure 3: Step 3, Niaoniao's line of sight, side view
Figure 4: Step 3, Niaoniao's perspective
Tumblr media
Figure 5: Step 3, how Niaoniao measures “1 foot”
Tumblr media
THE MATH
Tumblr media
THE ANSWER
Hence, the distance between the well opening and water surface is 4.5 feet!! Go time travel with confidence now.
SOME MORE NOTES FROM ME
The 3-foot ruler has to be perpendicular to the water surface.
This solution assumes the well diameter is constant from the top to bottom.
This solution ignores water refraction, which could be accounted for by Snell’s Law as a dear discord friend pointed out.
(Refering to step 3) This solution ignores that the angle that Niaoniao uses to view the water edge has to be highly accurate because being just a few degrees off could create a big difference in her measurement of how much the ruler juts into the well.
I translated 尺to foot. It’s not technically the same thing as the American foot of 12 inches, but people call it the Chinese foot.
I've been informed that her name is Niaoniao, not Niuniu, and that Niaoniao isn't even her name, it's her nickname. Please excuse me if I forgot to change Niuniu to Niaoniao somewhere. 😅
Bonus points if you can tell what's on the other side of my scratch paper!

8.17.22 泥炉煮酒共君享,万家灯火故事长
Happy New Year to my beloved Pingxie, Iron Triangle, Heihua, Jiumen, fellow Daomi, and everyone else! Here's my annual Daomu Biji post!!!
When I took the second photo, I didn't even know what Daomu Biji was; I just thought wow these guys on my friend's bookmarks sure are pretty. It's really hard to believe Daomu Biji has been by my side for so many years now.
Third pic doll is a female-version Zhang Qiling I made; although it doesn't look like him, I say it's him so it is him. Third pic book was gifted to me by a relative ten years ago; I completely forgot about its existence until I accidentally found it a few months ago, and I was so pleasantly surprised I almost cried. I'll just call it my ten years. teehee

Today On The Web: Tumblr user shijiegongzi scared off Procreate after airbrush turns flesh & blood humans into ghosts.
Anyways, this drawing's called Er Ge (Second Brother), dedicated to the Er Ge (Zhang Shouyue, Right) of my oc (Shen Xuezhu, Left). It's unfinished because the more I tried to fix my ocs' ghostly pallor, the more undead they looked. Pretty happy though with fine hair + softbrush (airbrush) for "ponytail/bangs under moonlight" for the first time.
Writing corresponding to this piece: Er Ge catches my head right before it hits the ground. To be exact, he doesn't catch it; he lightly hits it, bouncing my head off of his palm. Immediately, I'm no longer drowsy anymore. Sure, Er Ge doesn't need me here awake or not, but it just wouldn't be very responsible of me to sleep during night watch.

Untamed AITA
SPOILERS and TRIGGER WARNING for implied suicide
howdy folks, so i met this guy (Chad, not his real name) a few months ago, and he was super nice to me (he even gave me candy!) so i wanted to convince him to stay with me FOREVER BWAHAAHA. The thing is, there's another guy (let's call him Lad) who keeps chasing after Chad, and I KNOW they're not meant to be because Chad lost his eyes because of Lad. So I had a chat with Chad, and he ended up killing Lad.
Now's where the story gets weird. I thought Chad and I would get our happily ever after, but for some reason Chad got furious at ME for killing Lad and then he had a small accident. Now, Chad's two nephews and his entire friend group is trying to hunt me down and kill me. IDK WHAT I DID WRONG??? I just wanted a bf uwu AITA

Love Like The Galaxy AITA
SPOILERS
hi, not used to talking about my feelings but it seems like a big deal, so what happened was that i (21m) asked my crush (15f) to marry me, and even the emperor supported me, but for some reason my crush and her parents said no? For context, I fell in love with her at first sight and saved her life multiple times, and she wanted to play my flute so she clearly likes me. I'm also a powerful gov't official (can't say more to stay anonymous). Now, my crush is saying I forced her into a marriage, but I don't get it??? fam AITA

烛霞 Candleglow (ft. the fakest blood you’ll ever see.)
因思镜中霞, 不负沈雪烛
After not touching my wip for a year, I was bestowed a dream by the oc gods and got inspired to draw this series depicting my two main ocs’ story. More details and Chinese translations at the bottom.
Story behind Candleglow
5 years ago, Si Jingxia wakes up within a sealed black coffin with no memories at all—not even of his own name—except for one person: “niang-niang.”
5 years ago, Denghua Pavilion fourth disciple Shen Xuezhu is ordered by the Emperor to escort a black coffin with no known origins. Scaring years off her life, an “Undead Youth” emerges from the coffin, insisting that she’s some “niang-niang.”
~~~~~
As Denghua Pavilion gains political power (including receiving permission to take Si Jingxia in as a disciple), jealous officials frame the sect for scheming to overthrow the royal family. Denghua Pavilion is brutally massacred by the Emperor; not a single person lives, except for Shen Xuezhu.
5 years after her sect’s wrongful massacre, Shen Xuezhu still works tirelessly to clear Denghua Pavilion's name. While unraveling the web of lies that destroyed her sect, Shen Xuezhu discovers a shocking conspiracy spanning millennia: she's not only the body double for the late Empress but also the keystone piece of her grand scheme. Together with Si Jingxia, Shen Xuezhu hunts for the full story explaining the unexpected connections between herself, her sect, and the forgotten Empress.
Drawing 2: Flickering
Tumblr media
When the late Empress’ enemies arrive to silence Shen Xuezhu and Si Jingxia, Shen Xuezhu follows the first thought that comes to her mind: protect him. Like a flickering candle, Shen Xuezhu knows she nears death.
Drawing 3: The Way Home
Tumblr media
Ten years ago when Shen Xuezhu’s shifu first welcomed Si Jingxia to Denghua Pavilion, she gifted him a sword-shaped hairpiece that granted him access to the pavilion gates. Shen Xuezhu eagerly said to him, “Welcome home.”
When Shen Xuezhu dies, Si Jingxia buries her with the same hairpiece. This way, she can find her way home.
Drawing 4: I Finally Avenged You
Tumblr media
"After you left, I became your shadow":
All his life, Si Jingxia has lived as a shadow. Before, it was niang-niang’s shadow: past Si Jingxia religiously wore a pair of dark blue ribbons and golden clips in his hair because they were gifted to him by the Empress to match hers.
Just as Shen Xuezhu helps him walk out of his past, she dies. Grieving and bloodthirsty for revenge, Si Jingxia begins living as her shadow. He replaces his hair ribbons for her armor and takes on her resolve to bring justice to every person who ever harmed Denghua Pavilion. For some, that means exposing their wicked corruption; for others, that means merciless killing. The last person is himself.
"Let me preserve your memory":
Devastated at Si Jingxia's self-destruction, ghost Shen Xuezhu wears his robes to preserve what is truly him. (See detail 4 for further explanation).
Drawing 5: Daybreak
Tumblr media
The words may stop, but the story continues. A new day begins, a new dawn arises.
Drawing 1: Candleglow
Tumblr media
Mutual redemption, mutual destruction (相互救赎,相互毁灭): While Shen Xuezhu helps Si Jingxia come to terms with his miserable past, Si Jingxia helps her heal from losing her sect. At the same time, each person is intricately connected with the others’ suffering and downfall.
Details
Si Jingxia lacks identity not only because he's amnesiac but also because he's always lived as someone's shadow. Hence, apart from the sword-shaped hairpiece, past Si Jingxia and current Si Jingxia do not share any accessories or clothing.
Si Jingxia crosses his robes left over right because he's technically dead (traditionally, only dead people’s robes are crossed left over right). 30 years ago, the Empress fed him a pill to make him die and wake up at a suitable time to continue her scheme.
Let me be your cloak:  Si Jingxia always gave Shen Xuezhu his cloak to wear, even when she died. Now, like a cloak, ghost Shen Xuezhu envelopes Si Jingxia with her robes.
Ghost Shen Xuezhu’s red wedding robes are the same as Si Jingxia’s light blue robes, except Shen Xuezhu’s are stained red by her blood.
Ghost Shen Xuezhu and past Si Jingxia hold a red string that links the red strings on current Si Jingxia’s wrist and past Shen Xuezhu’s hair.
Si Jingxia wears Shen Xuezhu's red hair-strings on his wrist.
The spear that Si Jingxia dies by perfectly lines up with the spear that killed Shen Xuezhu. The two spears pass through both people’s hearts, and both people die in the same kneeling pose.
Ghost Shen Xuezhu protectively holds a bell around Si Jingxia’s neck; she used to wear this bell in her hair because it has calming and pain-relieving powers.
The red cloth on Shen Xuezhu's tombstone is her wedding veil.
Si Jingxia picked the matching white flowers in ghost Shen Xuezhu’s hair and pink flowers in past Shen Xuezhu’s hair. White is associated with death in Chinese culture.
Si Jingxia wears the pair of jade pendants that Shen Xuezhu was just about to gift him before she died. Ghost Shen Xuezhu wears her half.
Drawings 4 and 1 have a path in the snow because Si Jingxia has visited Shen Xuezhu's tombstone so many times.
Spent a ton of time on Shen Xuezhu's hair and armor, so gonna drop a close-up here.
Tumblr media
Glossary:
Shen Xuezhu (沈雪烛): Shen 沈 = surname. Xue 雪 = snow. Zhu 烛 = candle. Female main character.
Si Jingxia (思镜霞): Si 思 = think, Jing 镜 = mirror, Xia 霞 = daybreak/afterglow. Male main character.
niang-niang (娘娘): Refers to the Empress in my story, but is a general way to address noble or royal women. Si Jingxia’s shifu. Exact same appearance as Shen Xuezhu.
Denghua Pavilion (灯花台): Deng 灯 = lantern. Hua 花 = flower. Tai 台 = pavilion. Shen Xuezhu’s sect.
Zhu Xia (烛霞): Zhu 烛 = candle. Xia 霞 = daybreak/afterglow. Drawing title.
因思镜中霞, 不负沈雪烛: Because you think of its glow reflected in the mirror, you don't fail the candle burning in the deep snow. While the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th characters make up Si Jingxia, the last three characters spell Shen Xuezhu.
Where it all started!!! (8 days/21 hours ago):
On 8/17/2021, Zhang Qiling has now returned to Wu Xie and Pang Zi for 6 years.
Because I can’t visit Chang Bai Shan or Hang Zhou or Xi Zang or anywhere tbh 😭 for my first ever 817, I’m visiting Tumblr instead to post my rare thoughts. I wanted to dedicate my 817 post to these pictures from Episode 16 of Ultimate Note.
Let me explain why *hem hem*. The first two pictures are when Zhang Qiling exited the yun yu in Xi Wang Mu's cave palace and lost his memory. Clearly, he's in a disastrous physical state or else someone as fit and martially skilled as him would never lay in such a vulnerable position or have to be carried.
In the third picture in the desert though, he's walking by himself. We know Wu Xie and Pang Zi would have carried him without any hesitation (I mean even Hei Yanjing and Xiao Hua carried (dragged) Tuoba out of the desert), so Xiao Ge must have been determined to walk by himself.
And we also know from the last two pictures that he wasn't walking because he was fully recovered. The moment they exit the desert and reach safety, Xiao Ge is in a feverish coma state again and stays that way until after spending many days in the hospital. So he really was walking by himself in the desert not because he felt that much physically better but because he didn't want to "burden" Wu Xie or Pang Zi and have them spend their energy on carrying him.
These scenes may just be a few minutes in a 36 episode long tv series or 10+ year fandom or thousands years long story, but they embody why Dao Mu Bi Ji and Tie San Jiao enchant me so much. I’ll never encounter zombies or raid a tomb or fight a powerful secret organization, but it’s so believable to me that the characters of dmbj exist somewhere. Somewhere there’s a Wu Xie stringing together the coin bracelet of a woman who wanted to kill him or setting out to rescue an uncle who has lied to him in every imaginable way. Somewhere there’s a Pang Zi holding the lifeless body of his beloved in his lap or making a nametag so his good bro can find his way home. Somewhere there’s a Zhang Qiling who’s willingly harsh to himself if it means his friends’ lives are a little easier.
Through the eyes of the live comment generator that is Wu Xie, I’ve been immersed into the spectacular world Nanpai Sanshu has created. Reading for pure fun is not something I do often, but the dmbj series made me want to read every single word with all my heart - if not for the plot, then just to make sure Wu Xie still has a tian zhen (innocent and naive) side, that Pang Zi is still lively at times, that Zhang Qiling returns from the too cold Chang Bai Shan, and to follow everyone else to the end of their written stories.
Ending with this line that perfectly describes the magical connection between a book and its readers: 两方世界山河共,一纸内外烟火同.
