Now that that Dear Evan Hansen movie trailer is out I am gently (very much threatening) telling you guys that Colton Ryan does NOT deserve your fucking slander for not being Mike Faist and it’s not his fault. He’s an original DEH cast member and has played Connor on broadway multiple times. Get OUT of here if you’re going to slander that man. He’s a brilliant singer and actor and I WILL come for your throats

Some thoughts on West Side Story (2021):
SPOILERS ABOUND
The framing device was an interesting choice. I like the fact that they tie it to the real neighborhood it’s set in and the gentrification of that neighborhood that eventually takes place but I don’t know how I feel about the story literally coming out of the neighborhood being bulldozed.
I was definitely shocked to see the harshness of the violence. There’s a shot in the first couple of minutes that’s particularly brutal (imo the most gruesome scene in the whole film). It’s upsetting, but it makes sense and deserves to be there.
Tony Kushner’s script is great and adds a lot of background to the characters and their relationships with each other. I think specifically with the Jets you’re fighting an uphill battle for the audience to empathize with them, given that they’re a gang of white boys who hate crime a latinx community as literally the first thing that happens in the film. But the nuance that’s leant to Riff specifically is really wonderful and makes the whole thing so much more tragic.
I don’t like the way they staged “Who Knows”. It took a lot of the energy out of it for me.
I have a couple issues with Ansel Elgort (as an actor in this film). One, I don’t think he carries the puppy dog innocence of Tony particularly well. That’s not his fault but some of the scenes didn’t work for me because he felt too hard. Two, he seemed kind of removed or dead behind the eyes to me in some of the scenes. I think there was a lot he did well, I thought most of that was outside of his relationship with Maria. I will say that it’s clear he’s a dancer, and that they really need a dancer for Tony. Good on them for that one.
I really liked Rita Moreno’s character. Her song is one of the moments you’ll find boring years from now, but her character is a great little addition to the story.
I remember Officer Krupke mattering far more in the original, but I’ve seen the original once and I was under the age of 10. Brian D’Arcy James is great because he’s him, but there’s not a lot added by his presence. The character feels like he’d but cut completely if he wasn’t written into a fan favorite song.
Rachel Zegler deserves a long career. My g-d, she was incredible. The perfect marriage of fiery and naive, and giving it her all every time she’s on screen. She’s especially powerful in that final scene with the gun.
On the topic of Maria, I like a lot of the little things they did to make her feel like a well rounded character.
ARIANA DEBOSE AS ANITA. She’s amazing. Anita goes through so much and DeBose carries her joy and her sorrow and her love and her vitriol so well. She (along with Mike Faist) really stood out to me.
The CHOREO. Specifically the “Cool” choreo. It was incredibly dynamic and clearly the result of the Tony and Riff actors being capable dancers. I really love that this movie had capable dancers.
Shoutout to all the Newsies in this movie, loved seeing you. Especially the one who was the cigar newsie. He’s still cute, he’s still killing it, and I appreciated his accent because it was the same but toned down enough for film.
The dialect work was amazing. Everyone’s accent was perfect.
MIKE FAIST AS RIFF. This character is given a lot in this movie, and Mike Faist fucking nails it. The gun purchase scene is next level in terms of performance. He’s really great, I hope he gets awards noms.
I completely forgot about the sexual assault scene in the original and I think people should be warned that it exists in this film. It’s not graphic but it’s a definite trigger warning.
Chino’s character details made his decision to pick up the gun and perpetrate violence all the more tragic. The actor was great.
The cinematography was beautiful. There were a few moments where it felt almost too perfect but that’s a thing I have with a lot of movies from recent years.

Introduction 2.0
Since there’s a lot of new people following along and interacting with my posts after the Disney+ release, I thought it might be a good idea to introduce myself again and talk a little bit about what you’ll find on my blog. I’ve been a huge fan of West Side Story since I was a little girl. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen the 1961 film. I’m now in my late 20’s and my love for WSS is probably stronger now than it’s ever been. I was initially skeptical of the new West Side Story, being such a massive fan of the 1961 film, but if you’ve been around my blog at all, you’ll be able to tell that all my fears about Spielberg’s WSS were very quickly put to rest when I saw it in theaters (five times). I adore both the 1961 and the 2021 films, so don’t be surprised if you see content from both of them around here. The main reason I started this blog was to find an outlet to share my great love for Riff & Graziella. Since I was a child, they have been my OTP. I love Russ Tamblyn and Gina Trikonis’ Riff & Graz in the 1961 film, and I adore Mike Faist and Paloma Garcia-Lee’s chemistry as Riff & Grazi in the 2021 film. For the longest time, I thought I was the only person in the world who cared about them and loved them as a couple, so it’s been a very pleasant surprise to see how many people have started following along with my posts and shipping Riff & Graz as well! I post anything and everything related to Riff and Graziella on my blog. I also love to write stories about them—I’ve been writing fics about Riff and Graziella since I was about 12 years old. I took a 10-year hiatus from writing, but was inspired to get back into it again after seeing the 2021 film. I post mainly headcanons and writing prompts/requests on my blog, but I also post longer fics when I have the chance to write them! My ask box is always open if you have any prompt requests or suggestions! I also write about the other Jet couples, too, if that’s something you’re interested in. I have a Masterlist pinned on my page which I always update when I post new stories, so feel free to check that out if you’re interested! Finally, I really love interacting and chatting with people about Riff & Graziella and all things West Side Story, so please feel free to shoot me a DM or send comments/questions/requests through my ask box at any time! (P.S. - I’ve been a huge fan of Mike Faist for 10 years—since his Newsies days—and I’m obsessed with his performance as Riff, so you’ll definitely find a lot of Mike content around here as well!)

Its sadly like that with every fandom, especially if you’re on Twitter. Whether its a musical artist like Olivia, Britney or Justin, a sports fan or a fan of an actor - I see people go crazy and try to defend anything no matter what.
Lately, the most crazy have been: Andrew Garfield fans, Timothee fans, Tom fans, Zendaya fans, Doja fans, Florence fans, and BTS fans.
Theres even been a rise in Mike Faist fans. Awhile back, a few Zendaya or Tom fans were saying they didnt see the hype and out of no where they were getting attacked and privately qt rted by so many Mike fans. It was surprising!
😬
I mean, I guess I knew, but this is my first true fandom where I feel like I’ve committed to following people (besides the Sussexes but they’re a bit different) and I’m really seeing the crazy for the first time in any detail. I sometimes often wonder what I’m doing here, actually😂
But so many of you are great and I mostly have fun :)

West Side Story Review
Tumblr media
West Side Story is directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Tony Kushner. The film stars Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Brian d’Arcy James, Corey Stoll, and Rita Moreno. Set in 1950’s New York City, the film follows Tony (Elgort) & Maria (Zegler), a pair of teenagers on the opposite sides of two rival street gangs who fall in love with one another. Before I continue on with the review I want to state that this was the first time I had watched and experienced West Side Story in any medium. After watching it I now understand why it’s so beloved and considered a classic in musical theater. As a first time viewer I found this to be a wonderful story with amazing choreography and music.
The acting and performances from just about everyone in this film was brilliant. Rachel Zegler in her first ever acting role announces herself as a future movie star. She was amazing and I fell in love with her and all that she brought to the role of Maria. Ariana DeBose is a powerhouse in her performance and she embraces and takes pride in who she is as the character of Anita, it’s wonderful to see. Rita Moreno that’s all that really needs to be said about her, the women lead this film in my book in all the best ways. Mike Faist and David Alvarez give it their all as Riff and Bernardo the leaders of the Jets and Sharks, you really feel animosity they have for one another, but also the respect and pride they have for their respective groups that they’re a part of.
I felt like I was immersed in 1950’s New York in this film and that’s in part due to the production design and cinematography. The scale in this film is a sight to behold and for me as an audience member it made me feel like I was living in this time frame of history. The cinematography from Janusz Kaminski looked like this film was shot and filmed in the time frame the story is set in. Both of these elements are some of the many aspects of the film that made this story feel authentic. The dance number scenes are unlike any I’ve seen in a film adaptation of a musical before, they’re so full of vibrancy and at times also gritty. Spielberg did not shy away from anything in this film and told this story the way it should be told.
There are not many criticisms I have with this film other than one, but it wasn’t something that took me out of it. I think Ansel Elgort’s performance is fine and he could sing, but I just couldn’t buy the chemistry he had with Rachel Zegler as I thought she carried that chemistry throughout the film. With that being said however, this is something to be seen on the big screen. As someone who never experienced West Side Story before, I fell in love with the story and the characters. It’s a story that feels timeless and relevant today as when the story was set in. If you’re a fan of this story I think this will be for you and if you’re someone like me who’s never experienced this now’s your chance to do so on the big screen.

Alright, I watched the Dear Evan Hansen film adaption, I’ve got a lot to say it seems so here’s the review I posted on Letterboxd.
I would like to say straight up that I am a huge fan of the Broadway show so that makes my judgment bias, and I will be comparing it.
I’m not going to criticise the choice to use Platt, I understand why they did and it’s evident that he puts his heart into the character of Evan Hansen.
The film opens with the song “Waving Through A Window” as opposed to “Anybody Have a Map?” which seemed odd. “Anybody Have a Map?” has Heidi Hansen, Evan’s mother and Cynthia Murphy, Connor’s mother, sing about not understanding their children and their struggle parenting. We observe the parallel between Evan and Connor, and open with a perspective that isn’t Evan. Instead, we are introduced via Evan’s first solo, showing off the narrative entirely through his character’s view point.
The start of the film is slow, the actors seem almost bored reciting their lines in the scenes taking place throughout the first day of school, Colton, who plays Connor Murphy, has dialed down the character’s anger which I was a little disappointed with. He yells at Evan in the hallway, not shoving him (though he would do that later) and in the library he’s quiet, even when he yells at Evan. It’s hard not to compare to Mike Faist’s performance in the musical, loud and angry and hurt “you’re the fucking freak!”
Jared’s character is barely there after “Sincerely Me” (which, I will admit, I quite loved as a musical number; the transition into the song, Colton’s movements, the ridiculously inappropriate upbeat vibe.) - which I was severely disappointed with. I love Nik Dodani as an actor and I was so excited to see him play Jared. And the bits of dialogue we get are fun, he plays the role a lot more sassy than Will Roland did on Broadway, but after “Sincerely Me” he’s shoved to the back, a couple reaction shots in “You Will Be Found”, a quick scene at the first Connor Project meeting and him and Alana waiting for Evan to show up at a subsequent meeting later on, but he never gets angry at Evan like he does in the show (“Fuck you, Evan. Asshole.”) - and whilst I was always a little sad they never got resolution in the show, it hurt here more. Him and Evan have a graduation photo together but Jared seems more annoyed while Evan is enthusiastic. The “family friend” bit never comes back around either. Dodani’s Jared never gets fleshed out and it makes me sad at what could’ve been.
Also he 100% would’ve killed the “Sincerely Me” reprise.
Jumping character from Jared to Alana Beck - I really loved Stenberg’s portrayal of Alana and it’s one of the best things to come from the film. She’s authentic, and her character actually gets fleshed out more, including a new solo “The Anonymous Ones”, which takes the place of “Disappear”. Now, I really loved “The Anonymous Ones”, I think it’s pretty, I think it perfectly fits with the theme and I adore how they made it visually parallel “Waving Through A Window” as she sings it. I also enjoy the lyrical parallels to the cut song from the musical “Hiding In Your Hands” which Zoe sings, but was replaced by “Requiem”.
However, “Disappear” was important in the musical, being sung by Evan and his imaginary Connor - the physical manifestation of his guilt throughout the musical (something the film lacks and I will speak more on in a moment). “Disappear” is the point in which Evan is asked the question “Did you fall? Or did you let go?” by Connor and we realise Evan had attempted suicide when he broke his arm, he’s in denial. In the film, it’s hinted at in Evan’s flashbacks around Ellison but not fully confirmed until “Words Fail” at the end of the film, a full hour after we learn the fact in the Broadway show. It takes away from Evan’s character.
“Requiem”, my favourite song in the whole musical, was well done. Not the best it could be, Dever, playing Zoe, seemed to struggle a little with the vocal range of the song, but to be fair Zoe has one of the harder vocal demands in the show. I love the climax having Zoe almost total her car, I thought it was a brilliant idea - however, Dever didn’t play it nearly angry enough in my opinion. Dreyfuss’ performance of “Requiem” is fuelled by anger in the bridge “when the villains fall the kingdoms never weep, no one lights a candle to remember, no one mourns at all…” the idea is there, the execution just could’ve been better.
Amy Adams as Cynthia is one of the best performances in the film. Her acting is brilliant and she nails her parts in “Requiem”, storywise though, it seems very clear that they were going for the angle where she pushes Evan into lying, she’s desperate to know more about her son. In the stage play this is evident, but I felt like they were pushing that idea more in the film - which leans back into Evan being played as more sympathetic.
There are several other instances and changes where it’s been made for Evan to look more sympathetic in the film adaption; cutting the songs “Anybody Have a Map?” (outside perspective), “Disappear” (Evan’s biggest mistake in the film outside of the original lie), and especially “Good For You” (Heidi, Alana and Jared holding Evan accountable), the change in “If I Could Tell Her” having Evan and Zoe talking in the kitchen and almost kissing as opposed to him actually kissing her in Connor’s bedroom in the show (a moment wherein I was asking “how far is he willing to take this?”).
In the end, there is the change made wherein Evan exposes himself online as a liar, whereas in the show the Murphy’s decide to keep it secret because of the good that has come from the Connor Project. And I guess this works in the sense of the film, offers a bit of closure to Evan’s character arc as he tries to actually go and find out what Connor was really like after doing so (something taken from the novel of all things, and I’m slightly pissed off that if the novel was being taken into account they didn’t bother to even hint at Miguel, Connor’s canonical boyfriend in the book.)
I know this was the writer’s way of trying to hold Evan more accountable for his actions, but honestly? “Good For You” still does a better job - having Heidi, Alana and Jared, characters we know and understand their hurt and frustration, ripping into Evan is a much more satisfying way to have him held accountable for his actions then just Evan opening up instagram and posting a video unprompted.
Speaking of there being a lack of “Good For You” - Heidi Hansen barely makes it into the film. After “Anybody Have A Map?” and “Good For You” being cut she has one song, “So Big/So Small” which takes place after Evan is honest about everything and tells her what he tried to do when he broke his arm, and the song is beautiful, it’s sang well and it’s a clearly devastating song - but I felt such a lack of connection to this portrayal of Heidi due to how little she was in the film. However, what she was in there for, Moore acted her well - and would’ve absolutely killed “Good For You” if they had left it in. Which they had the time to do oh my god-
I couldn’t find a place to talk about this earlier but “You Will Be Found” is the emotional climax to end the first act of the show on Broadway. The song is fine in the film, but the editing of one part in particular really annoyed me - the part of the song where it’s the chorus of voices echoing “you are not alone” and there is just post after post merging together to create a photo of Connor. It’s a clear parallel to the set on the Broadway show, and I see what they were attempting to do but the editing just didn’t look right? At all? I hated it.
The film is ended in the same manner as the Broadway show, at the end of the year at the orchard, Zoe takes Evan and they talk, get closure, and that’s that. All this ending with Connor’s song, which I was thrilled that Connor got a song let me tell you, “A Little Closer” which surfaces as Evan’s attempting to find out more about the real Connor - it stems from a video of him singing at rehab. Connor in the film, like Zoe, plays guitar and writes songs. This was actually a detail about Connor I really liked that they added, links him to Zoe a little more. In the novel, Zoe actually writes and sings “Requiem” while Connor’s ghost watches her, and I just like the symmetry it provides the two characters, who otherwise are “a million worlds apart”. That was another reason I was upset about Zoe’s lack of anger during “Requiem”, it links back to Connor’s own anger.
My biggest gripe with the film is the lack of Connor. In the Broadway show he remains as the physical manifestation of Evan’s guilt for lying about being the dead kid’s friend, he talks to Evan and seemingly coaxes him to lie more, he’s the one who begs the question “did you fall? or did you let go?”, in the novel he remains as a ghost, every three or so chapters having one of his own which gives insight into his life while being alive (showing how wrong Evan has him) and commenting on Evan’s trainwreck of a lie (which offers a perspective that’s not Evan’s). There’s a scene in the novel where his ghost interacts with Evan once, after the truth comes out Evan is lying on the road unwilling to get up despite an oncoming car and Connor’s ghost just screams at him to get up. It’s a bittersweet moment. In the film however, aside from the first day of school and the “Sincerely Me” montage, we are given nothing until Evan unearths the video of him singing in rehab. It’s odd. Connor’s suicide acts as the catalyst for the plot, and Levenson himself has referred to Evan and Connor as mirror images of one another, which is one of the reasons his presence is important throughout the story. The film lacks it.
Overall, I didn’t absolutely hate the film, I liked a few of the new character details, loved the two additional songs, and it would’ve been alright had the film been a stand-alone film, but being a fan of the Broadway show since 2017, I was left disappointed at what could have been. Jared not having any development, Heidi not being in the film much at all, the lack of Connor - ghost or the physical manifestation of Evan’s guilt aside.
But in a sentence? It could’ve been worse.

⌠ mike faist. 30, queer, non-binary, they/them. ⌡ wait a minute, is spencer kelly name still in town? i thought i saw a flash of (chewed up hoodie sleeves, late night horror movie marathons, tinny pokemon music)! last i heard they were working as a library assistant nearby. when it’s the (capricorn)’s birthday on 01/05 i forget that they’re unnerving and celebrate that they’re knowledgeable. i hear the boredom is the reason i started swimming. it’s also the reason i started sinking by the front bottoms every time i think of them. ⌿ @liminalintro
* Army brat with an emphasis on brat.
* Their dad is a high ranking officer in the army, and they moved around a lot as a kid, finding solace and friends in books, Pokemon games, and horror movies.  Maybe it’s a coping mechanism for how much army propaganda they had to deal with, maybe they just like the effects.
* Has had a very complicated relationship with gender for as long as they can remember - their dad wanted them to follow in his footsteps, which never felt right.  Being misgendered doesn’t inherently bother Spencer, but they just don’t feel comfortable constantly thinking about themselves as a man.
* While unapproachable on the surface, is very willing to help you beat that video game level you’re stuck on or talk about their favorite horror movies - they just suffer from resting bitch face.
* It’s not always easy for them to pick up on subtlety, unintentionally overstaying their welcome or staring at something for a little too long - it’s just easier to tell them up front what you want.
* Has dated a handful of people, ranging all over the gender spectrum, though tends to fall for male presenting people more often.
* Lotta daddy issues in this one.  Also not a fan of authorities.
* While they wanted to move out at 18, it wasn’t really feasible, but by 22 they moved to Centralia and have been here ever since.

Dear evan hansen for the fandom ask thingy? 😌😌
Yessss, I was hoping someone would ask me for DEH for this :D Here ya go!
the first character i ever fell in love with: Connor (Pretty sure everyone knows this already, heh).
a character that i used to love/like, but now do not: TBH, it’s the reverse for me with DEH. I had characters I didn’t like as much in the beginning and now love (thanks to reading and writing fanfic), like Jared, as one example.
a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not: Umm... That’s tough because I multi-ship this fandom. I guess I liked BandTrees more the first time I watched the show, and then I went Trash for TreeBros so :D
my ultimate favorite character™: Connor, obvs
prettiest character: Oof. That depends on who’s playing them. Gonna go with Mike Faist Connor because I adore Mike Faist. But I’m bisexual and I suck at choosing one of anything, so I’m also gonna say Olivia Puckett as either Zoe or Alana because Olivia is gorgeous.
my most hated character: Does Mark Hansen count? I know he’s not technically in the show, but he’s mentioned and I really don’t hate anyone else, so.
my OTP: TreeBros, obvs
my NOTP: Um.. I’m not a huge fan of Zoe x Jared. I love the potential dynamic between Connor and Jared if Jared’s dating Zoe. I think that would be hilarious. And I don’t mind writing Zoe x Jared, if I get a request for them (which I did and am working on), but I don’t really ship them. Also Evan x Alana. Would totally write it, if requested, but don’t ship it. I’m not out here to ship shame anyone - y’all should know I don’t condone that at all - so please note this is just my opinion and I’m not trying to make anyone feel bad if they ship Zoe x Jared or Evan x Alana, at all. Ship away and enjoy your ship! <3
favorite episode: I’m gonna alter this since it’s a musical and doesn’t really change, and make the question be “favorite bootleg” and say the bootleg where Will Roland messes up during Sincerely Me and Ben Platt makes fun of him for it. I cackle every time I watch it. Although I’d pay good money to get my hands on video of Alex Boniello tripping and falling while exiting the stage during Michael Park’s birthday show, hahahaha
saddest death: Connor. Duh. Even if there were multiple deaths, it would still be Connor.
favorite season: Again, for the sake of this being a musical, I’ll change this to favorite song? Yeah, favorite song works. So my favorite song is Disappear, to absolutely no ones surprise
least favorite season: So we’ll call this “least favorite song” then. So.. Hmmm... Okay. If I HAD to pick a least favorite song, I’d say To Break in a Glove. BUT... I fully, 100% appreciate the message of the song and the insight into Larry, etc. I’m not knocking it’s importance. Just not my favorite song to jam out to.
character that everyone else in the fandom loves, but i hate: I don’t really think I hate any of the characters, so... Like I said, Mark Hansen. But no one loves him. So. Yeah. Can’t really answer this one, sorry!
my ‘you’re piece of trash, but you’re still a fave’ fave: I don’t think any of the characters are trash so I can’t answer this either, sorry!
my ‘beautiful cinnamon roll who deserves better than this’ fave: Connor. Obvs. He deserves the world. I won’t be convinced otherwise.
my ‘this ship is wrong, nasty, and makes me want to cleanse my soul, but i still love it’ ship: Errr... Again, I don’t like to ship shame. And I multi-ship DEH. So I really don’t want to name one. And I don’t really think any of them are nasty or wrong, so.
my ‘they’re kind of cute, and I lowkey ship them, but i’m not too invested’ ship: Conlana. I love the potential dynamic. And, not trying to sound conceited or whatever, but I love the way I write them, and their banter and tenderness when I write them. It’s not a top ship for me, but I adore them.
Thanks again for requesting this! This www so fun!

Dude I honestly love your blog and you profile pic- Anyways, I think it's fair to say you're a Mike Faist enthusiast? What are your thoughts on people stalking him? It is a serious issue and I just wanna hear what people have to say, thanks!
Awww thank you <3
Well my thoughts on stalking are it’s not ok in any situation. I get that when you’re a fan you kinda get obsessed with who ever you’re in to, but that still doesn’t make it ok.
I can see that the fandom has made Mike uncomfortable and because of that he’s deleted social media and doesn’t like to make public appearances anymore, and that kinda sucks for us because we see less of him.
There are a lot of ways you can channel your love for a celebrity. You can write fanfics on there character, make fan art, or find different ways to support. Just be careful that you don’t over step boundaries and make sure that you’re not making people feel uncomfortable/unsafe.

UNDER THE CUT YOU’LL FIND THE LIST OF ALL THE ROOMMATES.
The roommates were done by a RANDOM generator. Except for the people who were on the ship list and who messaged us requesting a specific roommate.
If you do not see your characters name on this list, or if you happen to get paired with one of the other characters you play - please message us POLITELY and let us know - the generator was a little weird, but hopefully, everyone is accounted for - if not, we’ll fix it, don’t worry :)
Remember, we are NOT mandating threads to be completed during this trip, however, we do expect everyone to reach out to their roommates, people you don’t normally talk to, etc, and simply branch out. If this goes well, we may  do future trips without a  mandated thread. However, if this doesn’t go well we will go back to mandating threads. We are trusting you all with this.
Please be mindful that we have an activity check before the trip, so do expect some changes! If your partner goes inactive or  leaves the roleplay during the trip - the list will not be updated. Your FC just will no longer have a roommate for the  duration of the trip to avoid confusion since this is only a weekend trip and not a week. However, if we get new members come in during the trip, they will be added to the roommates list accordingly.
Those on hiatus during the trip and reduced activity were not included in this list - but they must just state that their characters are on the trip. However, if those on reduced activity or on hiatus can get online during the trip to rp - you’re more than welcome to!

i’d just like to say i’m really glad to know you’re not a fan of the novel. i think a lot of people like it like, Solely for connor insights? which is all fine and good, but when the rest of the story is thrown totally off balance by that and other things... it’s not well planned, or well written. connor’s voice was probably my favorite, but i’d far prefer if it was integrated differently :( i understand wanting more connor but this ain’t it chief, fanfic writers do WAY better with his character
u: Connor’s voice
me: remembers I bought the audiobook just to hear Mike Faist read to me 😍😍😍😍
thank you!!! glad u can relate!

My only problems with that bmc theory you mentioned is that 1) bmc was already really popular and 2) that’s kinda body shaming Roland :/ but yeah I agree that he can’t really sing for shit lol. And I hate how his go-to thing when he’s singing (it’s super evident in loser geek or whatever) is to just throw his arms out in a t pose
you should have problems with every part of that theory because everything in that post is about how the arguments are terrible and absurd, and i’m gonna use this opportunity to straightforwardly lay out why all that is, but first let me talk about the problems you did find with it
1) yes
the off-bway run of bmc is unusual because it did (and existed because) already have popular support/demand. they absolutely had no motivation to try to increase its popularity. they already had that fully covered.
2) yes
nothing wrong with having a preference or an attachment to the first portrayal you saw but there is no real reason to legitimately dislike or resent will roland’s performance to the degree that anyone wants to act like they have objective justifications for this. i will freely blame a ton of this on the fact that will r is not a super lanky guy who sort of looks like elijah wood’s fey woodland cousin or something, and he has a nasal voice, and the fact people find this less attractive leads to this extra resentment that gets rationalized as some kind of problem they have with his performance. surely i will come back to this but for now i’m going to argue against my own fake arguments
they didn’t approach will only because he was in deh and thus ~famous~ or famous by association or whatever. like i said in an earlier post, they were considering will for the part of jeremy even before will was considering himself for the part, as he said he didn’t consider auditioning for that role until it was suggested to him. and then he made it to callbacks, which means he was seriously considered and they already saw merit in the idea of casting him for the part. the fact that he didn’t get it doesn’t mean he wasn’t good enough: people Don’t Get The Part all the time and it isn’t for any certain reasons. for example, earlier will got cast in the black suits, while george salazar also auditioned and didn’t get cast, and yet we wouldn’t use this as evidence that george wasn’t necessarily good enough. not to mention that will would’ve been getting involved in deh at around that time of the bmc auditions, so evidently he was already good enough to be involved in like, any production.
also, the part of jeremy wasn’t the only change in cast between the productions. and they didn’t seem to leap on the opportunity to get Big Names involved, and in fact, they’ve said they didn’t want to do that. and, again, they did not need a popularity boost, they were in the unusual position of already knowing they had an audience. thus there’s no reason to believe that will’s casting, and will’s casting alone, was some sort of grab for increased attention on the production.
joe iconis had worked with will for years prior to 2018 and it’s just kind of ridiculous to suggest that will auditioned for his play and got turned down because he was terrible, and it’s only due to the fact that he was then cast in deh that made joe go “hm that roland guy can’t sing for shit and i’ve just been too polite to Not cast him in a previous musical of mine and work with him dozens of other times but he’s in a Popular Broadway Musical now so hmmm, maybe we’ll make a sacrifice to the quality of this show to get a popularity boost we don’t need” like
obviously it does not make sense. will was not Only offered the role because of being in deh. and, by extension, he was not offered the role in spite of any kind of inadequacy on his part. or in spite of anything at all.
also there is no indication that will connolly was just like, ditched or something. initial castings and casting changes are done for any number of reasons. and it’s not like joe iconis exactly has a reputation for ruthlessly screwing over people he works with, nor does will roland…and casting changes are basically inevitable if a show goes beyond one run or has a particularly long one. and it’s not unlikely people will have a preference or consider the first performance they see to be kind of the standard in their eyes, and there’s nothing wrong with the end of someone’s run / a casting change being bittersweet, cuz all of that is just how it’s gonna go. but like there’s no reason for animosity towards the replacement cuz then you’re gonna always hate everyone but the o(b)c
again like. maybe people really aren’t aware that will roland was cast in a musical of joe iconis’s back in 2012? the black suits? ben platt was there? george salazar wasn’t? will was 1/6th of the cast and did plenty of singing. and that was 3-4 years prior to him auditioning for bmc and getting the part for the off-bway performance, and as people tend to backhandedly point out, he only gets better with time and experience, and he was already doing great vocally in the black suits. he did that 2012 run, and then the run tbs had in 2013 as well. like, joe had plenty of experience working with him there. why would he think will is bad at singing.
also will was involved with joe’s work even prior to his graduation
will was also involved with bmc producer jen tepper’s work prior to his graduation. had a solo in the “if it only even runs a minute” show
they’d know how good will is. they had already been willingly involving him in various works for years, over and over, prior to will auditioning for bmc. the fact he didn’t get the part the initial time wasn’t due to them thinking he can’t sing, okay. and already right there you have the issue that apparently a bunch of randos figure they just have better judgment than the industry professionals.
also, you can prefer will connolly’s voice, but it’s not even A Valid Argument to say that will roland is a bad singer. like, this isn’t even about opinion. he is a good singer and this is an objective statement. He Is Very Skilled. his vocals Are Good. this is not opinion it is essentially fact. you may not like them but to say he’s bad is just to say either you don’t have the first clue what you’re talking about or are willing to skew your own perspective or just say whatever to pretend to justify this preference as “one of these is the performance i like better and the other is a performance that is inarguably Bad and Incompetent”
one thing is that will is so good that he makes it seem easy. he pulls off shit that you don’t even have to recognize as taking a crapton of skill. there’s all sorts of performances of his available and the way he’s able to emote during his singing isn’t just his also-strong acting, but it also requires the vocal ability to deliver quick shifts and jumps between differences in volume and pitch and soft/fragile vs forceful/angry and that requires a ton of skill and control. speaking of control and the stuff i’ve just said, there’s also a lot of smoothness to his vocals and consistency which reflects not only the quality of his vocals but also the control and endurance and knowledge of how to handle a performance within individual songs but also an entire show and also a string of shows.
like, dunno what to tell you. like i said before, these industry professionals think he’s good enough. the people he work with think he’s talented. i put myself through reading bmc reviews and i don’t remember anyone saying anything suggesting will’s vocals weren’t up to par, but i do remember a lot of acknowledgments about the opposite and how his performance is stellar and showcases great vocal talent and ability, whether or not the reviewers took to the rest of the show as a whole. and yet people who are mad about him not being will connolly have the take that he can’t sing. pretty wild how the people who would probably know better than you or me all consider will roland to be a very strong singer!! must be because they don’t know as well as various random people who resent will r.
it’s just a bonus when people argue he can’t sing the high notes. i’m guessing i need to say it’s called a falsetto? he has a gorgeous one and the way he’s able to snap right into it is kind of breathtaking? and the fact that joe iconis wrote lgw Specifically For Will Roland’s Voice, specifically designed to showcase and play to his strengths? and that this song, written by a professional composer to be ideally paired with will roland’s voice, features that falsetto so generously? hmmmmmmmmmmm
like, there’s so many amazing and beautiful performances of his online and like every available performance kicks ass and is certainly Vocally Competent but like, if you listen to this and think “he can’t really sing for shit” then you’re just telling on your own flawed judgment n Shit Taste lol…..like, again, to say he can’t sing is objectively incorrect.
also, there’s this.
i’m also very suspicious of people just interpreting his singing as “bad” because of the fact that his voice is just nasal. or suggesting that he can’t have as ~serious or dramatic~ impact. for unspecified reasons. but what i am going to specify as “because he has a nasal voice and i have an automatic association with this meaning that the character is unsympathetic and a joke”
i now slowly turn around and pull down a slide reading “jared kleinman”
again, not like the “will roland was only cast for clout” idea holds any water in the first place, but it’s just extra good how his character in deh seems to be written off by like, everyone, from reviewers to casual audiences to most more-involved fans of the show alike, and largely overlooked or maligned, despite all characters getting an equally sympathetic treatment, and all of the teenagers being very similar in what their flaws and weaknesses are and what their desires are.
like i and other people and mike faist will tell you, yeah jared’s character provides a break from Heavier scenes into lighter tone, which is necessary for good pacing, but that doesn’t mean that the character and the things he says aren’t serious or genuine. watch me avoid going off into a longer tangent about jared and bringing it back around to will roland: it just Sure Is Interesting that the character is one that tends to be seen as unimportant or even dispensable despite being absolutely crucial to multiple elements of the play. hmm
and anyways it’s kind of funny that you’d really have to already be a fan of will’s to like, make his casting in bmc make you care about bmc if you hadn’t already (#me, lol) and like. otherwise it’d be like “hey this guy who’s in bmc was in deh” “oh really that’s neat” and maybe it’d make some new people pay attention, but not to the degree that it would like, be expected to carry the show’s sales or anything lol. plus uhhhhh haven’t noticed the marketing saying anything about WILL ROLAND of DEAR EVAN HANSEN and you’d think that if they’d deliberately cast someone who sucks just cuz he had a part in a well-known show, they’d uhhhh take advantage of that? and yet.
that theory’s total shit is what i’m saying
and it’s interesting that will has a nasal voice and isn’t Serious Enough and his Singing is Bad
by interesting i mean total shit
i’m also totally gonna say that people are mad at will for not being super tall and super skinny and seeming attractive to them.
absolutely gonna say that. there is a real, documented bias towards considering someone seen as Attractive as being more sympathetic than someone who isn’t. for example i am tilting my head 270 degrees when anybody decides jeremy is an unsympathetic character. i am tilting my head 583 degrees when anybody decides that will roland’s performance as jared is the Unsympathetic one. my eyebrows are so raised they’ve just graduated college.
just yknow people are mad at will roland b/c they don’t find him as hot as will c and resent him for not seeming attractive enough and like, there’s the people who will at least own this and insult him for being too ugly for their tastes and their inability to keep their shit to themselves, and then there’s people who also have this inability to keep their shit to themselves but don’t wanna say they think he’s too ugly for their tastes and will instead be like mmmm dunno the way he follows the written changes to the script is bad………mmmmm idk he just can’t sing ://…………mmmmmmm his performance isn’t the same so uhh fuck him for not being will connolly………………://///……….
i don’t know if anybody sees him as fat rn, there’s this window of being Average where i truly cannot see it even though its supposed to just be Objective Judgment territory. but that sure never helps. also he just doesnt have the willowy fragile body type of will connolly’s at all, no matter what. and that also cannot ever help. couldn’t’ve helped when he played jared either.
maybe it’s an utter coincidence that the majority of his film roles, where your body and face are always gonna get hq closeups, and in which we also have audio of one’s nasal voice, have him as Nerd Types who aren’t meant to be particularly sympathetic. not saying this is all him being typecast based on being written off from certain types of roles as characters meant to appeal to the audience / win sympathy, except, my eyebrows have now finished grad school.
in fact, although the realm of live theatre may be more “”forgiving”” of these superficial traits, it’s not as though will’s roles haven’t been largely uncool losers in various ways lol…but all of them have been sympathetic. he’s even mentioned how being cast as a romantic lead way back in school changed how people saw him. and here he is in a role where he feels like he isn’t allowed to be the main character even in his own life, and where he feels that he can be treated Like a well-liked, attractive person, but not necessarily be one. will roland is out here just outright saying how lgw is about himself and about you and about me (and for trans and non-hetero fans) and people are really out here going “he’s ugly he shouldn’t have this role” like, i’ll freaking slap you, lord
again. loser geek whatever alone is evidence that the take that He Can’t Sing is objectively false. and it is. move on. love yourself
also just thanks for mentioning the thing about throwing his arms out. that’s just like, one of the peak examples of “i resent will roland for not being will connolly but i need to invent justifications for this” and deciding that totally arbitrary things about him are reasons to be annoyed by him, and thus to think that there’s anything actually wrong with it. like, so he has a tendency to gesture with both arms out whereas other people don’t always do this? you’re mentioning loser geek whatever and it’s pretty crazy how when you watch him perform the song he actually employs a variety of gestures and you’re just picking out the one thing he does and going “ugh god you’re killing me will roland” like god….of all the arbitrary inconsequential things to focus your dislike on and pretend it’s a Legitimate Critique, this one’s a classic. if anything it’s a quirk that puts an individual stamp on things in the midst of all the other ways he moves and gesticulates during songs, but yeah, i suppose you could just decide you hate it. truly, between will roland putting his arms out and the people who see this as some kind of real flaw, whose reach is greater……..
anyways the point is none of you have any real reason to be bothered by will roland, and every “oh my god he’s so incompetent” take is ridiculous, and at least the people who outright insult him based on appearance are being honest about their bullshit since it’s all insults anyways. the oc album is right there. the performance with will connolly also continues to be right there. everybody just might consider why they’re so resentful of will roland for having the part, and also consider getting over it.

The name Ivy was like poison ivy and a sign that a plant is poison ivy is if it has three leaves…tada leaves-of-three. But then I stopped rping and this blog went dead for a while. Eventually I got into deh and wanted to write fan fics for Connor. Instead of starting a new blog I just decided to clear this one out and use it for my own trash fics. I never thought anyone would actually read my stuff or else I might have put a bit more effort into things and not just recycled an old username but ah well.

Days of Rage Exceeded My Expectations!
or, a play that makes you go “hm”
Tumblr media
Let it be known that I am not a Dear Evan Hansen person in the slightest. I never really got into the craze of it (#teamgreatcomet) and I found a lot of the story very troubling. I never obsessed over the cast, unlike the group of teens tonight who brought flowers for (presumably) Mike Faist.
However, what I did like about Dear Evan Hansen was the book of the musical so I was very intrigued to see an actual play by Steven Levonson, especially since I heard If I Forget was fantastic.
I really really liked Days of Rage. The more I think about it, the more I really like it.
This was a really interesting play about how far you’re willing to go for a cause and whether the means justify the ends. It’s also a play about how fear and anger can quickly turn into paranoia and how contagious that paranoia is. There was also this strong theme of the individual vs. the group/collective, which I thought was super interesting. This play was about a lot of things and all the characters talked a lot about different ideas and different political mentalities, all of which worked really well.
Honestly, this was a really well-written play.
It was funny and heartbreaking and intense and there were moments where I could physically feel my heart pounding in my chest because I was so worried about these characters and what would happen to them. I was with the characters the entire play, even when they weren’t with each other.
Just about everyone gave a really fantastic performance. Lauren Patten and Mike Faist in particular were the standouts, and had terrific chemistry to boot. Patten’s character Jenny goes through such a visceral change that could’ve fallen flat but never did. Jenny’s an interesting character because she’s both completely steadfast but completely malleable but Patten filled her with such vulnerability that was really beautiful to watch. Faist was surprisingly funny but also very heartbreaking, which I didn’t expect. There was this softness about his character Spence despite his intensity, which was really cool to see. There seemed to be a slight costume malfunction during the performance I was at but he handled it really well, which is an odd thing to praise but he could’ve easily let it throw him off but he didn’t at all.
J. Alphonse Nicholson and Odessa Young were also fantastic. I wish Young’s character was a bit more developed but she was still great.
The only person I wasn’t a fan of was Tavi Gevinson as Peggy. I felt that she played more of a caricature than a character, and in a piece grounded in stark realism (for the most part) her performance was a little jarring. The way she delivered all her lines was super odd and I don’t know if that was a directorial choice or just her.
Speaking of choices, the only thing I didn’t like about this play was the last scene. It wasn’t needed and it completely took me out of the world of the play. There’s a moment like three minutes before the final scene starts that would’ve been the perfect end to the play. But alas.
All in all, this was a really interesting play that I know I’ll be thinking about for a while.

damn I wish I saw mike faist ass twice irl djjxjdjd
i actually don’t talk about this a lot on my blog because i’m not really in theater fandoms, but i’ve been lucky enough to see a lot of theater and i’ve actually seen full frontal male nudity twice (both times in London) and it’s always jarring as fuck, even when done “well”
but this was a whole other ballgame - having it be an actor you know and you’re a fan of......
the first time I saw DoR, I was front row and all by myself and i was UNPREPARED
