Blossoms Shanghai, the first TV series from Wong Kar-Wai, is finally premiering after Christmas, on December 27th. The series will run for 30 episodes of around 50 minutes each, with the first four episodes out on December 27th – followed by two episodes per day with probably a two-day break each week until all of the are available to stream.
The series is adapted from Jin Yucheng's novel "Blossoms" and follows a businessman's journey in Shanghai in two time periods: the 1960s and 1990s and looks like it contains Wong Kar-Wai's themes of the passive of time and secret desires.
"Blossoms would be the third part of In the Mood for Love and 2046," Wong said. "Jin Yucheng's landmark novel Blossoms has been the perfect backdrop to visualize and share my love for my birth city. With the series, I would like to invite the audience to immerse in the intrigues of Shanghai and its inhabitants in the early 1990s, an exciting time that paved the way for the prosperity of modern Shanghai."

alright, so there's one outfit of li xiangyi's that i have questions about and which stands out to me, and it's his robes in the flashback with zhan yunfei.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(bear with my screenshots, sorry. things in this scene move very fast and it was more difficult to get decent captures)
in the vast majority of his flashbacks, li xiangyi is in his red or white robes, which we generally associate with his status as leader of sigumen. they're the robes he's immortalized in in his portrait as baichuanyuan, the ones he wears at donghai, in his memories with qiao wanmian, etc. those outfits have a common silhouette, with the long, draping sleeves that fall open from the shoulders (apologies, i don't know the technical term). i don't have to post them here; we all know what they look like.
these robes are an exception to that. they're less elaborate, in different colours/accents plus in a different style, and it makes me wonder if his time with zhan yunfei took place before. before sigumen, before becoming 天下第一, when he was more of a wandering xia still building up a reputation for himself. not li xiangyi the legend but just a disciple, come down from his master's mountain to do his best for the jianghu. it would make sense, i think; no one else is in that clearing aside from zhan yunfei, himself, and the man they were trying to capture. there's no power of a sect involved here, and li lianhua doesn't mention working with one (just that "zhan yunfei teamed up with others") as he retells the story to fang duobing. this outfit certainly gives him more of a boyish feeling, less so a sense of being a leader or a representative hero of the jianghu. which brings me to my other point.
you know whose image li xiangyi is very closely evoking in this memory?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that styling in the zhan yunfei flashback specifically is the closest that li xiangyi and fang duobing have ever visually mirrored one another (beyond fang duobing generally wearing his hair like li xiangyi, which other people have brought up before). i chose these outfits of fang duobing's from the yucheng and yipin tomb arcs for comparison, as li xiangyi's outfit has the most direct resemblance to them down to smaller details like the belt ties, but fang duobing wears robes cut like this (with varying embellishments) a lot. this show is very deliberate about characters' distinct silhouettes, something i've mentioned before. i very sincerely doubt this similarity wasn't intentional.
why dress li xiangyi like this in this memory specifically? i don't know. perhaps it's because li xiangyi and zhan yunfei, too, are linked by an upheld promise over ten years the way fang duobing is to li xiangyi. perhaps it's to situate li xiangyi's age, remembering that he, too, was once at the same point of his life as fang xiaobao is now, earnest and still working his way to the top in the jianghu, however short and/or since forgotten that time was. perhaps it's simply that li lianhua, given that this flashback is told from his point of view, truly has come to see fang duobing in his younger self gone by. regardless of the reason, i think it's a fascinating parallel, and i once again wish we had more context for the past and period of time spent with li xiangyi and zhan yunfei together.

Who Led My Villain Astray? - By 暴青漫画 (7/10)
Tumblr media
Seduction and madness usually go hand in hand, but this situation is a little awkward. This madman was seduced by a fake, and now the real woman has to deal with the consequences.
Master Ning is a special lady with power and influence. She took in a student named Yucheng a long time ago. They had a good relationship, but now he's powerful...and he's been carrying a torch for her since the beginning.
Tumblr media
Yucheng was originally quite respectful. He was in love with his master, but he accepted that his love would never come to be. After all...she did raise him. He also knows she feels zero attraction towards him, even after he grows up handsome.
Tumblr media
He takes one stolen cheek kiss, and that marks the end of his first love.
Tumblr media
Wait he kidnaps her? His master and idol and love? He betrays her and locks her away???
Tumblr media
It's a real kidnapping her allies are trying to save her and everything.
Yucheng is also babbling about Ning seducing him, even though she did no such thing.
Tumblr media
Ning is trapped...but not totally powerless...
Tumblr media
She's not a very trusting woman. She put something inside Yucheng when he was young, because she knew he would grow up powerful.
She uses it to keep his hands off her, but he will not stop.
Tumblr media
He claims that she followed him. He claims that she came to him in a red dress, and he had to use all of his willpower to reject her...many times...
Ning uses her great power to delve into his thoughts...and she sees it. Her. In a red dress? Was the woman planted to usurp her? Was she possessed? She doesn't know, but the red version of her has been messing with Yuchengs brain for years...and now he will not listen to reason.
Tumblr media
He is forceful and weird with her. I'm sure she will forgive him, but he behaves like an average yandere.
The Red Dress mystery isn't bad, but the characters are too flat. They're attractive dolls, not people, so I can't give this a high rating.

The highly anticipated drama series "Blossoms Shanghai" from director Wong Kar Wai has obtained a distribution license!
Cast: Hu Ge, Ma Yili, Tiffany Tang, Xin Zhilei
Episodes: 30
Expected release date: January 2024
youtube
For those who aren't familiar with this project, it's an adaptation of the novel Blossoms by Jin Yucheng, which is a character driven story that takes place in Shanghai.
Wong Kar Wai has been working on this project for nearly a decade, starting with the script development (which reportedly took 4 years) and then the filming, which began in 2020. This is to be the third in a trilogy with In the Mood for Love and 2046. He has said that a film version will follow the TV series.
From a Variety article about the project:
In a tale of journey and reinvention, Hu portrays a young opportunist with a troubled past, as he ventures within the gilded city of Shanghai. “Set against the backdrop of massive economic growth in 1990s Shanghai, the series unveils the glamour that follows his dazzling wealth and his entanglement with four fabulous women that represent the pursuits of his life: adventure, honor, love and innocence,” said Jet Tone.
“Jin Yucheng’s landmark novel ‘Blossoms’ has been the perfect backdrop to visualize and share my love for my birth city,” said Wong in a prepared statement. “With the series, I would like to invite the audience to immerse in the intrigues of Shanghai and its inhabitants in the early 1990s, an exciting time that paved the way for the prosperity of modern Shanghai.”

I'd hate to be such a broken record about this but man... you don't know good acting until you've seen wang anyu as duan yucheng in falling into you. I somehow always find myself coming back to this SPORTS DRAMA??? HELLO??? WHO AM I??? everything about his character here and all his actions based on who he's written to be is always so justified. I don't think the last immortal left a very lasting impression on me, no puns intended, but his character in this little drama about him being a high jumper falling in love with his coach DID! he did sooooo well here and there are scenes where he cries for seemingly menial things that are more emotionally driven than when he cried after killing ahyin in the last immortals... there's a really good scene where he walks away crying because his coach tells him that he's no longer as bright in her eyes compared to the first time she saw him. he's so sad, and rightfully so, but he tries to keep it all in as he's walking away but he can't and he's covering his mouth and tears are running down his face. broseph? that's an actor. I wish I could induct this scene into the hall of fame because I thought it was that impactful and telling of how good of a grasp anyu had at being duan yucheng. I talk about this scene very 6 months but I swear to god it's phenomenal. not just the acting wise, but the way it's placed in the script and how the scene is written and why it's written. the entire sequence basically ends with him apologizing to his coach and begging for her not to let him go. he goes on this long winded spiel about if she feels like he can no longer excel in high jump he can switch to sprinting, or running long distance or doing ANYTHING just so both her, and being an athlete can still be apart of his life. maybe I'm just a fucking insane person but I'm telling you... he ate here.

Yu Ziyuan Analysis- Her Name (Part 1)
YZY and JFM are controversial characters in the MDZS fandom that are often misunderstood. Like most CN novels, key to understand each characters often lies in their names. So let’s start with Mdm Yu.
Meaning The surname 虞 has an interesting history. This is an ancient surname that was claimed to have originated from the legendary king Yu Shun. His son, Shang Jun, was subsequently granted the Yu Kingdom (currently located in modern day Yucheng). The descendants of Shang Jun subsequently took the name Yu. So this, is an old noble surname.
Ziyuan 紫鸢 translates to purple ‘鸢 yuan’. A Yuan鸢 usually refers to an owl, harrier or eagle. It also sounds very very similar to kite (纸鸢 Zhiyuan). (granted that their pinyin differ slightly lmao) I’m guessing this is why MXTX included the parts when she was screaming at JC and wwx when they were playing with kites.
Tumblr media
Chinese meta 鸢 is also a homonym for the more commonly used 鸳, which usually refers to mandarin ducks. Which in turn usually symbolises married couples in Chinese culture.
C fans speculate that the origin of her name likely comes from Li Bai’s 李白 Poem “Goodbye to your Lover”. 代别情人
Background history about the poem: This is a poem that Li Bai wrote on someone’s behalf. (This was a common practice during ancient times; ie. hire a poet to write your homework love letters) As the name implies, it’s about someone missing their lover when their lover has gone.
清水本不动,桃花发岸傍。 I’m as reserved as still water, you’re like the peach blossoms growing on the shore.
桃花弄水色,波荡摇春光。 The peach blossoms play with the colours in the water; and the water ripple with the colours of spring
我悦子容艳,子倾我文章。 I love the way you look, you love my poems.
风吹绿琴去,曲度紫鸳鸯。 With the Guzheng, I play the “Purple Mandarin Ducks”. The melody drifts along in the breeze. (Her name comes from the term “Purple Mandarin Ducks)
昔作一水鱼,今成两枝鸟。 We used to be happy as a fish in the water, but now we’re like two birds on a tree branch. (T/N: the imagery of a “fish in the water” is often to describe a couple in love. For example, “鱼水之欢” (fish rejoicing in the water) refers to the intimate sex life of a couple. Thanks Meatbun for teaching me this lifechanging R18+ idiom lol)
哀哀长鸡鸣,夜夜达五晓。 We mourn for each other through the night till day break.
起折相思树,归赠知寸心。 I give you a branch of the lovesick tree, as a symbol of my feelings. (T/N: This refers to the Acacia tree.)
覆水不可收,行云难重寻。 The water has been splashed out and cannot return. It’s hard to find the ever floating clouds.
天涯有度鸟,莫绝瑶华音。 Even if we are like birds separated by the horizon, please don’t ever forget the precious message these letters.
TLDR; the poem starts with the love the couple once shared when they were young, which was followed by the time they separated. The poem then describes that they can’t be together anymore. And finally, it ends with the hope that they’ll be able to talk about this lost love again.
(I’ll stop here for now. In our next meta, I’ll be analysing her background)

ooh what's "on one side of the water" about? 👀
oh this one is really fun! "在水一方 | On One Side of the Water" is an original work that's also genre speaking, a classic high xianxia, wherein:
There are 9 realms, with the Heavenly Realm ruling over the other 8.
Le Xing, the youngest royal of Bi'an Realm, a Foling tree comes to the Heavenly Realm to be recorded as the world's newest high god, (and also receive her apprenticeship job assignment) and ends up in an odd relationship with the austere and bad tempered Lord of Water, Yucheng.
(We later learn about how these two are connected and why Yucheng is such a giant asshole who's internally emotionally tortured at all times)
I adore this work for the unadulterated TROPES TROPES TROPES TROPES but also because I can lean into the part of Xianxia that I always adore -- the nonhuman extremeness that loops back around to being extremely human anyway.
Have two complementary scene snippets about it!
"Everyone knows it," Xiao Yan tells her when she asks about the scar on the Lord of Water's forearm -- which, of course he had not wanted to let her see and had in fact, been quite upset by (which means she shouldn't ask after it, but she couldn't help it. She'd always been too curious for her own good.) "Everyone knows that the Lord of Water is covered with scars. It's from his ten years of lightning punishment."  "Lightning punishment?" The Lord of Water she knows is severe and rules bound. "What would he have done to be punished by lightning strikes?" Much less ten years of lightning punishment carried out by the Bureau of Careful Punishment?  Xiao Yan shrugs. "Oh this was so long ago." After a moment when Le Xing still sits there, waiting for an explanation of an old sordid story, Xiao Yan leans forward and whispers in her ear. "I was small then when this happened, so of course I was not supposed to know, but my father told me that the Lord of Water was just a deputy of the Old Lord of Water back then when he committed the crime of stealing from the water allotment that year. He selfishly held up the ten year flood His Majesty wanted to set on the Cangyan Kingdom in the mortal realm and then never explained what he did with the water. You'd never seen His Majesty so angry. Word is that the Old Lord of Water had to beg His Majesty for leniency and that was how the punishment was knocked down from execution to ten years of lightning and a demerit."  A ten year flood.  Didn't her father always tell her that had it not been for the Lord of Water, Bi'an was supposed to have a ten year drought in her sickest span of years?  Didn't her father always tell her that if it hadn't been for the Lord of Water's kindness, she would've died?
And:
When he still says nothing, she takes a long breath, wipes her eyes with her sleeves and says, "Yucheng-shang'shen, you were the one to send water to Bi'an eight thousand years ago, weren't you?"  With a long sigh, he shuts the book he'd been reading and rises from his seat in front of the incense burner. "Xiao-dianxia, are you implying something?"  Someone must've told her when she asked about his scars. When he finds out who it was, he'll conspire to have them skinned. Then again, it is not as if how he'd gotten these scars is any secret. Le Lin must've told her about his foolish bleeding heart from eight thousand years ago. He fails to see why, but the King of Bi'an had always been inexplicable to him on the best of days. Le Lin is further incomprehensible to him these days in the worst of decisions.  (And no matter what, it is true that the Realm of Bi'an owed him a life debt, no matter how much he didn't intend to consider it important in any way.)  No matter what, he still-- Well. He had regretted that choice many times over the thousands of years that followed, but then Le Xing had stepped through the doors of the Water Lord's Pavilion for the first time, holding a plate of Foling pastries and a pot of new spring tea.  He hadn't been able to regret that decision ever since.
Something something, you regret making a good decision because of the punishment you received for it until you come face to face with the very concrete results of that choice.
Also the fact that no one else in his realm even knows why he stole from the water allotment, etc etc, drives me insane.

If something happened to you, your athletic career would be ruined. I don't care. You're telling me I'd have to stand still and watch as you get hit? If that's how my athletic career is going to be, then it might as well finish here. Yucheng, do you understand- It's you who don't understand. You don't get me at all. If you did, you would hug me right now... instead of scolding me.
