More on: “I’m so surprised more people don’t evaluate and compare & contrast Kaiba and Diva in relation to each other more often”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm looking at these pics side by side and either KT just straight up has a type of fav character design that he can’t shake himself out of OR this was on purpose to draw parallels between the two making them seem like shadow figures of each other/rivals/foils--
Both have a sleeveless coat, high collar, dramatic coat tail, pendant (or at least, I still solidly believe that KT just forgot to give Kaiba’s his, or perhaps you could argue that it missing has a symbolic reason or maybe to contrast with Sera and Diva who both have a small triangle pendant, turtleneck
Kaiba: silver/gray metal arm bracers, nothing special with hair sans when he’s dueling the duel gazer/headset is on his left, kneepads, belt, and his coat has the little spikes at the waist creating the flair of the spikes at his waist
Diva: gold bracelets, decorated hair with the longer strand on his right, wrapped fabric at the waist, spikes/flair at the end of his sleeves Also, nice framing with them literally in an inverted stance toward each other. And while on the Seto’s side it’s just himself and Mokuba against the rest of the world on Diva’s side he has all the kids that have joined the Plana at his back.
Like, I’m not an artist or visual director but all of these things are almost so 1:1 I highly doubt that we WEREN’T supposed to draw these connections. This seems to be visual cues galore.
And then for the meta/story side because I am first and foremost a story and writing evaluator:
When you really stop to think about it Diva and Kaiba are remarkably good character foils of each other with a lot of the same yet different methods, actions, flaws, weaknesses, and goals/motivations.
Motivations/Goals (those outside the main conflict of the film): Diva wants to create a new perfect dimension, a Utopia collective consciousness that the Plana would create and guide others to (this is more explicitly stated in the sub). And the Shadi and revenge thing, but more on that later.
Kaiba, (again most explicitly stated in the sub with Kaiba’s pre-tournament speech about how the new Duel Disk is meant to bridge the gap between people of all race/country/creed/etc. and the Transcend Game Manga) is trying to achieve a similar thing with his games and the duel disk. He states how the body is like a prison and these barriers between people lead to bloody useless wars. His connection via games is meant to escape that. He has a bunch of kids as the beta testers for their minds are the most imaginative. Kaiba is reaching for his own collective consciousness here but in a very different way.
Methods: Diva has complete confidence in the power of the Plana. He’s been told by Shadi about this great power and has seen it in action before he even receives the Quantum Cube himself. Diva and the rest of the Plana has seen that utopia the power of the Plana can provide (and Sera even showed Yugi a glimpse of it) but there is still that level of uncertainty in the creation of this new dimension. Sera states after Diva has gotten corrupted by the ring that the Cube has the power to create a new shining world of light, but if one drop of darkness gets in there the whole thing can be corrupted.
Kaiba has complete confidence with his tech. It is a simple equation of A + B = C. It may take it a while to get there, but there is a steady and succinct step-by-step process in his mind on how to get to point A to point B. And if he runs into a roadblock one way he explores another solution--as seen by when the Dimension Ascension had its safety limits in the World of Duel Links his focus became entirely on the puzzle, and then from the puzzle to the Duel Dimension System (it’s not a time machine i s2g if I see that one more time I will sCream. Atem recognizes him. He wouldn’t if it’s a time machine. It’s the darkside of dimensions, not the darkside of time travel). Kaiba’s methods are calculated and testable. There’s a scientific process to his approach.
Actions: They have very similar goal when it comes to the wider global scope, and yet intact that goal in different ways, despite both believing they are right in their own solutions even though this point never came up between them (but did between Diva and Yugi). Diva has seen paradise and that’s all he’s interested in until Yugi challenges him about building that paradise with everyone instead of gifting it to a few.
Aside from that conflict point though, Diva and Kaiba are pretty similarly ham-fisted when it comes to their actions once the plot of DSoD kicks off. Kaiba stomps around Domino City as he sees fit, he faces his challenges head on. And he is pretty clearly 100000% done with magical things running his tournaments and creates a counter for both of Diva’s Plana powers without much of a snag.
The Duel: Then of course they duel each other. And in this direct challenge they are pretty evenly matched. Kaiba, who the audience knows is a powerful duelist at this point dishes out powerful attack after powerful attack and even has new, stronger monsters to fight with. Yet Diva finds a way to avoid or redirect those attacks, even being bold enough to have an attitude that feels like he’s toying with Kaiba. While few others can go toe to toe with Kaiba in a duel the match was heavily going in Diva’s favor until Seto managed to summon Obelisk by picking up with the trace memories/wavelengths in the tomb.
Death and grieving: Both of them are trying to deal with the fallout of the death of someone that played a big role in their lives, but how each of their plotlines resolve for this are opposite at the end. Despite Diva’s actions to try and get rid of Bakura being against everything Shadi taught him and the rest of the Plana kids and even Sera and Manny trying to talk him down from it he doesn’t listen. Diva gets so caught up in the pain he’s feeling instead of what he knows. He’s eager to be able to blame someone for Shadi’s death he’s ignoring that Ryou Bakura is likely not the same as the ring spirit. But when confronting Ryou and realizes the truth he can’t ignore it anymore and he lets Ryou go and the glow of the cube fades. (Remember, it was the appearance of the corrupted Manny that caused the banishment of Ryou, not Diva himself, I see this getting mixed up quite a bit) And then he is able to start to fully move past his fixation on revenge.
But Kaiba hasn’t been able to make that progress himself. Even after Yugi reassembles the puzzle himself and shows it’s empty Seto keeps hounding Yugi, spitting cruel words and still refusing to believe that Atem isn’t still within Yugi. Then, even after Atem temporarily returns that isn’t enough for him to complete his grieving process, he finds a way to travel across dimensions for one last duel.
Flaws: Seto and Diva share some weaknesses in their ambition, ego, and arrogance yet at the same time it’s a situation of the pot calling the kettle black. Due to their own respective power they both think they’re invincible. Diva shittalks Kaiba’s egotistical actions of taking over Domino City and creating his own version of a collective consciousness within Duel Links. But Diva is doing a similar thing himself by how he’s dictating who should have the right to exist and even erasing people just for standing in his way like Jounouchi. Yet at the same time Diva thinks the power of the Plana is unstoppable and plain incompressible to anyone who is not apart of it--something that he gets a rude awakening for when Kaiba deflects his attempt to distillate him in the tomb and then later when Diva gets captured.
And then Kaiba gets knocked down a peg when his duel with Diva is a close one and then again when he has to team up with Yugi in order to defeat Diva’s corrupted form.
The character paths Diva and Seto are on through dsod are very similar. The characters are alike, but different. They have plenty in common to draw comparison to yet also differences that foil each other many steps of the way. And I just find this neat ™ and am surprised there isn’t more talk about these two in relation to each other when there’s so much crossover and they’re honesty the main two opposing forces of the film. Like there is so much going on here  TwT

Yu-Gi-Oh! The Darkside of Dimensions (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Style)
Gosh I've had this fan trailer bouncing around in my head for so long, it feels good to finally make it a reality. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.
I'm not really a youtuber and probably won't be posting stuff often but if you enjoyed it please consider liking/commenting, and share it with other yugioh fans. Thank you!

Yugioh 13, prideship 12, Kaiba 7! If you feel like it 🏵️
Thank you for the ask! I hope you’re having a nice night tonight.
Yu-Gi-Oh! 13) …which canon or popular fanon relationship I can’t stand or feel ‘meh’ about and why.
It’s of course a taste thing, and I want to say that up front. But I have two answers to say here I suppose. There’s a trend in some shipping spheres/tropes with Seto Kaiba that will gleefully see him be shunned, humiliated, or outright physically hurt for being a lonely self-isolating character and these HCs and fanfictions trigger me and I can’t stomach them. The other one is more complicated to explain. I’m one of those touch-averse/repulsed autistic people. And it’s… there’s always this shadow that I was a bad child or a bad sibling because I didn’t and don’t like being touched. It’s a societal pressure. As such, physically cuddly Kaiba brothers aren’t my cup of tea. As I say that though, I think for people who desire physical affection and have felt deprived of physical touch – I think that physically cuddly portrayals of the Kaiba brothers can be something very soothing and healing and comforting, so I hope people can continue to enjoy those portrayals.
Prideshipping 12) …about three of the scenes that make me have feelings and (if available) find the gifs that underline my points.
The scenes involving the relationship between these two weave through canon and build up to a complicated and layered dynamic and bond that the characters struggle to label. And for three scenes that hit me emotionally for this ship:
At the ending of Battle City, Seto saluting and smiling to Atem on the blimp from his jet, and the two wishing each other well within their minds before parting here.
Seto standing with Mokuba in the desert after Atem has left the world. Seto did arrive. Seto was here. And he was part of Atem’s life too, as all the characters are shown piece by piece within those final panels.
The scene in The Darkside of Dimensions of Seto’s reaction to the completed Millennium Puzzle but there being no Atem is like a miniature masterpiece. It is so aching.
Seto Kaiba 7) …the scene that I think adds depth to their character or the relationship this character has with someone.
Seto is one of the most developed characters within Yu-Gi-Oh! and his duels tend to be more loaded with development on average than the others due to the fact his on-page duels are more limited to the immediately-story-relevant.
I suppose I want to give a shout-out specifically to the scene he shares with Isis Ishtar inside of Alcatraz’s tower. That moment of understanding and compassion, and the internal shock at this moment of understanding and compassion within Seto – that he has this within him and always has. And that Isis is able to save her brother by sharing this vulnerability about herself, and that Seto saves Isis not by being a savior but by understanding her and passing on the tools to Atem. And how this moment is a culmination of everything that has been pulling and pushing Seto. It’s about his emotions for Mokuba and Isis and Atem and himself all at once and the value of living and caring for others and the wonder of what this power is.
Thank you again for the ask!

Prefacing this by saying all things considered I’m perfectly fine, but not gonna lie I think this is the worst that a ‘celebrity death‘ (for lack of better words) has hit home to me.
Thinking back, I remember some time before the Yugioh anime came out stateside, reading a magazine and seeing an advertisement for Yugioh. It was just his side profile - an anime styled version of the first manga cover actually - and I was extremely intrigued by it. I’m not sure if the ad even made any mentions of card games or the like. I almost immediately re-drew the image on the ad myself - Likely the fastest I have ever drawn fanart for something, haha.
I ended up buying tons and tons of cards even though I only really played with a few friends - the handful of actual tournaments I tried went, uh, poorly. But it was fine because I spent countless hours playing duel monsters with friends and I never regretted it.
Somewhere around 2003 I started reading Shonen Jump and seeing how Yugioh originated was world changing, to say the least - I felt like letting my parents know that at one point Yugi lit a man on fire was a bad idea so it never quite came up. But I fell for that part of the series just as hard as the card game aspects - maybe even a little more. I loved the creative use of games that could be considered more mundane, or changed a simple game just enough to where it became dangerous and thrilling. I think one of the series peaks is where Yugi and co. face Shadi and the Egyptian mythology aspects come to the forefront for the first time. The fact that neither anime covered this arc is criminal.
Comic Con 2015 was when Kazuki Takahashi made what I believe was his first American convention debut and I had the baffling luck to get a three-day pass to con that year - for every day except the one Takahashi was there. I can’t really complain considering how stupid hard con tickets are to get, but I’ll still never quite forgive them for that, haha.
I remember seeing Darkside of Dimensions in a packed theater and how into it everyone was. While the original ending was good - iconic even - it was great to see the characters we loved again and get a peek into where their lives are going and seeing despite everything they went through, they’re all going to be okay (Except Kaiba, he’s...a debatable case). It really felt like everyone who hand their hand in the movie put a lot of love into it - the gorgeous animation, the incredibly on-point dub script, and the actors who managed to come back sounding even better despite not voicing these characters for several years.
Armed only with the knowledge that he had done a quick shot for the previous Yugioh movie, I noticed the scene that he animated for DSoD (To be fair, noticed it by how radically of a different style it was from the rest of the movie) and thought ‘Wait - did he do that too?!‘. It was a proud, if pointless moment for me!
I remember some time later hearing that the manga not only basically cancelled, but Takahashi has such horrendous health issues that put him in the hospital towards the end of the run that he ended up having to cut a lot of content. I haven’t been in nearly such a position but as an artist I was able to relate to that a bit, it must have been so frustrating. I've always wanted to see a Yu-Gi-Oh anime remake - even though it doesn't need to to the extent as some other manga might. Beginning to end, as close to Takahashi's vision as possible, maybe adding some of the cut arcs that he originally wanted like Bleach is doing now. Unfortunately, the later is no longer possible, but it makes me more glad he had such a big hand in DDoS, from the script right down to a little moment like that. I hope he was satisfied with how he sent the series off.
I don’t know what I’m hoping to accomplish with this post, maybe just trying to get things off my chest so I can continue with my day. But Yugi and friends have been a constant in my life since 2002, and that both the Yugioh anime an manga are comfort stories I always can and will go back to countless times. I do know that despite being a casual anime fan at the time - even a Yugioh anime fan at the time - cracking open open those pages of Shonen Jump and seeing things like Yugioh, One Piece, Naruto? I’d never experienced anything like those stories I read and they completely changed my perceptions on what comics could even be. And here I am drawing my own comics right now - even if they’re just silly stories about animals. That’s okay. I’m glad to be here. It might be dramatic to say that Yugioh, that Takahashi played at least a small in who I am right now, but I wonder if that’s completely wrong? Even if it's something invisible, even if just a percentage, I think something that's been so big part of my life has definitely shaped my art, my creativity, my passion in some way. In the words of Yugi, something you can show but can't see.
Regardless, thank you for everything, Takahashi-sensei.

Random ask, have you seen any other YGO series besides Zexal?
Wait, is this a real question? Clearly you never looked at my blog's yugioh tag 😉
Read (in English): - DM
Read (in Japanese): - Zexal - Arc-V
Watched (in Japanese): - GX (still unfinished, but I rewatched Saiou's arc 4 times because I be like that) - 5D's (rewatched multiple times) - Zexal (rewatched multiple times) - Arc-V - Vrains (never watched the last few eps tho) - Darkside of Dimensions (rewatched multiple times) - Bonds Beyond Time (rewatched multiple times)
My epic distraction tactic to make people think I do not love nearly all of yugioh: hyperfocus on my favorite underrated villain Don Thousand 😎

The Puzzle is Unity
Hi, I know I’m 4 years late to the dsod discussion because I’m always so scared someone’s gonna bite my head off, but idc anymore-. Of course, you are entitled to your own opinion, as am I, so please be respectful. Without further ado--
Did you hate dsod because you felt it pushed Yugi to the side for Atem fanservice? If so, that is valid, but I propose a new way for you to examine the film that may help you hate it a bit less or look at it through a new perspective! One of the most prevalent themes in Yugioh is bonds. The power of friendship, unity, connection. The millennium puzzle is and always has been a symbol of these things. For one, it’s literally just pieces of metal until joined together, it brings Yugi together with his friends, and has even deus ex machina the squad out of many predicaments-1st Yugi v. Kaiba in the anime, Yugi v. Pegasus by preventing the mind scan, and most notably, from even the earliest days of the yugioh manga with the Yugi v. Shadi chapters it is explicitly stated:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(pardon my old gross phone pictures, I’ve been meaning to do this post forever) So how does this tie into dsod? There are a couple of frames that are hard to catch when Atem returns that can be easy to miss. But I think it’s also important to note that the real Atem (not the A.I.) doesn’t speak a SINGLE time in this entire movie. But onto the visuals, notice anything different here?
Tumblr media
Notice the eyes are all one color, they not drawn like Yugi’s at all [maybe later I’ll make a post going into how everyone's eyes in this movie no longer has KT’s white pupil style except Yugi, but that’s a different can of worms] but they aren’t drawn like Yugi’s at all.
Tumblr media
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY this quick scene flashes to Yugi in TWO frames:
Tumblr media
(couldn’t catch the second sorry, but notice the traditional KT white pupil style that they ditched with everyone else? Everyone else got redesigns)
Why throw this in? Why put the extra time and money into making this one tiny scene different from all the rest?
I think this goes back to the whole “the puzzle is unity” Atem didn’t just bluster in force Yugi outta the way, and plunk down (Palladium Oracle) Mahad. And bounce. I think this hybrid of visual is representing how they are BOTH working together. Atem this time, however, is providing the assist instead of being the one at the helm, thus the flash to Yugi twice. Yugi had already endured both his Dimension duel with Aigami (which I assume does real damage at least a bit) and his duel against Kaiba, where he got flung around by those new fancy holograms quite a bit. Ouch. So he was definitely tired. Atem came back to support his friend. Part of bonds is sharing burdens and boosting each other up. So here, Atem was simply aiding in giving Yugi the little extra oomph, a tiny bit of a surge of energy to continue onwards, because that’s what friends do. Perfectly timed, of course with the completion of the puzzle. So no, I don’t think Atem overshadowed Yugi in dsod. I think it was reinforcing the theme of friendship once more because the Puzzle is unity.

Thought
Kaiba actually does have some albeit small amount of underlying magic in him- Hence why he could fight off Aigami's power and then later straight up summons Obelisk which isn't even a card in his deck / data base.
Obviously given the kind of person he is this limited/ small amount of magic and anything that happens as a result of it he doesn't take notice/ writes it off as well if course I could do x thing cause I'm me and I'm brilliant and ect.

So I finally watched Yu-Gi-Oh: The Dark side of Dimensions
I honestly didn't think i would like this movie but it brought back so many memories. It was full of the charm the original show and of course a big dose of obsessed rich boy
Tumblr media
I mean look at him he made a whole new duel disk just so he could duel the Pharoah. He dug up the puzzle and rebuilt it IN SPACE
Tumblr media
Admittedly if he hadn't dug up the puzzle Yugi wouldn't have been able to save the world later but thats not point here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The point is that Kaiba is so obsessed he went to another dimension and left his younger brother in charge while he went off to duel his ancient boyfriend.

YuGiOh! meets Art~Part 1🖼 (Feat. “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt)
Have you ever noticed there are a lot of Sennen Puzzles in Klimt’s works? Take a close look to the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, for example! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
