ZKMonth22 Day 30: Denial
Katara went to Zuko’s room before the coronation to make sure he was healing properly. This is what she told herself; she was actually just going because she wanted to see him before he took on the persona of the Fire Lord. She didn’t know how, but she knew it would change things between them.
Just as she rounded the corner to Zuko’s room, she saw someone else, someone with dark hair and a dark robe, slip into the room before she could. Somewhere deep in her bones, she knew she was too late. For what, she had no idea, but something in her broke when she saw the tails of the other girl’s robe disappear into Zuko’s room.
She found she couldn’t help herself; she creeped over to the door, straining to hear what the two were saying.
When the girl, obviously Mai, demanded Zuko never break up with her again, it felt like the floor had been pulled out from under her. Before she could reveal herself, she clutched one hand to her mouth and slipped away. Her feet took her to the garden Zuko had shown her, the one where he’d fed turtle-ducks with his mother and had been pleased to find they were still there.
Finally, once she was alone, her legs gave out, causing her to crash to her knees at the edge of the water. She stared at her reflection in the pool and ached.
Later, when her marriage to Aang was falling apart and Zuko’s relationship with Mai had somehow survived and thrived for over a decade, Katara couldn’t help but ache. For so long she’d shoved it away, refusing to let it affect her relationship with Aang and upset their family dynamic, but when Aang began to turn away from her the few nights he was even home, the pain in the depths of her heart reared its ugly head and forced her to pay attention to it.
When the letter from Zuko came, her heart leapt; when she broke its seal and scanned the first few lines, her heart sank. She packed up Bumi and Kya, as she refused to leave them in the negligent care of the Air Nomads on Airbender Island, and went to the Caldera as quickly as she could.
She was almost too late.
When she got there, sending Bumi and Kya with a servant to their room, she found Zuko in his, the door open, him kneeling next to the bed Mai was laying on, their baby crying a room over with its now-mandatory wet nurse. The sobs coming from Zuko were more heart-wrenching than anything Katara had ever heard before.
She rushed to Mai’s side, pulling water from her pouch, covering her hands with it and beginning her examination. Zuko ignored her, head on his arms, weeping into the immaculate bedspread. When she realized she was just in time, Katara took a deep breath and called on the one ability only she could perform, the one she’d convinced Aang not to outlaw because to outlaw it would be to publicly reveal its existence: bloodbending.
Katara felt for the blood that was still ceasing to flow in Mai’s veins and tugged, stopping the bleeding by healing her, pushing her heart, forcing it to beat, praying it would work. Hoping the slight woman had enough blood left to sustain her, that she’d eaten something during labor that would lend her body the strength it needed. She worked the blood through Mai’s body for several agonizing minutes before she felt the other woman’s heart begin to beat on its own.
Katara breathed a sigh of relief, but didn’t stop working. From a different pouch at her waist she pulled a tincture she kept for these situations. It consisted of manjistha, olive leaves, and garlic. She unstoppered the bottle and bent a few drops from the concentrated mixture, holding them in the air with one hand while with the other she opened Mai’s mouth and lifted her tongue to bend the drops there, where they’d enter the bloodstream the fastest. As Katara helped the tincture work its way into Mai’s blood, the other woman coughed and began to breathe, but remained unconscious.
At the edge of her awareness Katara saw Zuko shoot up, but she focused on moving the medicine through Mai’s blood and making sure no infections lingered in her blood.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Katara deemed Mai to be stable and gave her a different tincture to keep her asleep so she could heal.
“Katara,” Zuko’s voice snapped her attention to him, as it always had.
“Yes?” she asked, tucking her bottles back into their pouch and not looking at him.
She was aware, of course, of what she’d just done. What she could now never hope to have, even if it would have been in the distant future.
“Thank you.” The sincerity and relief in his voice ripped through her.
All Katara could do was nod and leave the room to check on her children.

Zuko: He's Just Better Than Aang🤷🏾♀️
Frankly, I think Zuko in season 1 was more altruistic than Aang was during the entire series. Yes, it was the season where he was arguably at his worst, but it's also the season where he risked his life to try to save the man who had tried to murder him. He still had the injuries he sustained in the attempt, and still, Zuko tried to save him.
Meanwhile, Aang didn't go out of his way for anyone. The times he did "try to help", was more about his reputation as Avatar than actually wanting to help in those instances, and he gave up as soon as it got too hard. Remember The Great Divide? Zuko went with Sokka on a suicide mission to try and save Hakkoda. Aang wanted to run off and go play the day after Hakkoda risked his life to save him. Let that sink in. The father of the girl he allegedly "loves" has been captured trying to save Aang's life, his friends are distraught, and Aang can't muster up the empathy to sit with them to plan the next move. Not even to get in Katara's good graces. But I'm supposed to believe that Katara would realistically choose Aang over Zuko? Like...

I saw one of your post from a couple of weeks ago where you mentioned you are a Christian. How can you support abortion?
Well, first of all, pro-choice isn't pro-abortion. I just want to make sure that's clear. I don't think anyone is pro-abortion for abortion's sake. Second, I chose to be a Christian. I had to study and pray and get advice and really weigh my decision before I got baptized, and it was months before I finally made my choice (and I have a few friends who took years to make that decision). There's a lot that I do or don't do because I'm a Christian and I hold the bible as my standard, but I had a choice in the matter. Now, I am abstinent because I believe sex is for marriage, and I only date men who agree. But not everyone in this country is a Christian. Not everyone chooses abstinence or celibacy. Not everyone wants a child. Not everyone should have children. None of that is my business.
Who am I to force the standards I chose onto someone who didn't choose them? And who am I to force a life-altering decision on someone after I was given so much agency on my own life-altering decision? I truly believe that banning abortion will do more harm than good in the long run, especially if these nuance-free pro-life radicals actually succeed in criminalizing contraceptives and birth control, and in completely getting sex ed taken out of schools. Which is looking likelier by the hour.

Here's the thing that gets me about the whole "Zutara is anti-feminist" take. Their relationship in canon is platonically supportive after they reconcile. Before that, they met as enemies in battle, yes, but there was nothing inherently sexist in how Zuko interacted with Katara, especially in comparison to how she was treated by her own friends and allies, and even her own brother.
Romantic Zutara is completely fan-created (canon chemistry notwithstanding), and a large portion (if not most) of the creators, as far as I can tell, identify as women. In those fan creations, Katara gets to be a world leader who is loved by a supportive man who adores her strength and is there for her in her weak moments. Zutara the ship is at its core very feminine. Also, except for making the romance overt instead of subtextual, that's pretty much how Zuko treated her in canon after they became friends. Compare that to what Katara is reduced to in the actual canon, and it's hard to understand why anyone would think that of the two ships Zutara is the one that is anti-feminist and bad for Katara.

You know, I often lament the fact that Katara lost out on a supportive partner who respected and trusted her when Zutara didn't happen, but Zuko lost out, too. He lost out on marrying into a family that would have given him the love, encouragement and support that they gave each other. Hakoda, Sokka and Bato would have taken such joy in introducing Zuko to the SWT customs that were handed down from father to son for generations. Hakoda would have absolutely given him as much advice as he could as a leader in his own right balancing the duties of chiefdom and family. Kanna would have grown to love this uncertain boy king who didn't think it was a humiliation to help her around the home. He missed out on having a wife who would back him up and advise him as he figured out how to be the leader his country needed. No matter how bad things got in the Fire Nation, he would have had a tight-knit family support group to make sure he got through it.
When you take a step back and look at all the ways Katara and Zuko would have filled in for what the other was missing, I get annoyed all over again that all that parallel and convergent development was set aside for pairings that were somehow the blandest and most toxic that anyone on that writing team could have come up with. It is so clear that Zutara was supposed to be endgame and they got robbed for Bryke's pet ship.

I promise I actually have been writing this whole time. And to prove it, I've finally posted the prologue to my new fic spark, set fire. I hope you enjoy; here's the teaser:
Zuko was twenty-nine years old. He’d had coworkers with children and well-meaning neighbors who stopped him during morning runs to chat, their young progeny sleeping away in jogging strollers. “You’ll fall in love at first sight,” they’d told him. He had known he wouldn’t. Love at first sight wasn’t for him. He had been right, he realized, with grim satisfaction. He had been right, but he still felt a piercing tightness in his chest when he held her for the first time in the sanitized Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She had no one, and neither did he. He couldn’t do much in his yellow paper gown and stockinged feet. But he could be someone that she might depend on. He had no idea what he was doing, no idea how he would do it. But he vowed to her, nearly weightless in his arms, that he would not give up on her without a fight.

I've talked about this on twitter, but the way canon shippers defend their ships with their whole chest is hilarious. You're that defensive because zutara is mentioned? Why? You HAVE canon, you have EVERYTHING, yet you still care about what we ship? It's giving insecurity to be honest. It's been fifteen years and you'd think they'd get it through their heads that zutara fans don't give a flying FUCK about what's canon.

These Things I've Done
"Katara, you're not a monster. You'll never be a monster."
She shook her head angrily, unable to contain herself any longer. "No, I don't think you understand, Aang. I decided to end that man's life today. I did that. Not Zuko, not Sokka, me. And if you can't handle that then you can just kindly fuck off!"
Aang sputtered, "You don't mean that—"
She let out a bitter chuckle, "Oh, I think I do," She stepped closer to the airbender so that they were face to face, toe to toe, "And I won't repeat it."
He was breathing harder now, his eyes wide, unable to believe what she was saying. She was perfect. Katara was always perfect. So innocent and kind. So why was he seeing her so differently now? Why was she acting this way?
"Katara, I think Zuko has corrupted you somehow. This isn't like you—"
She clenched her jaw, pressing her finger into his chest, "Oh, no no no—we are not doing this again. You and I? We are not the same. We've never been the same! You can't tell me how to live my life just because you don't agree with it! I ended that man's life because he killed my mother! I was owed that! And I'll be damned if I let anyone else tell me otherwise!"
"And if you think for a second that I am gonna let you slander my best friend then you've got another thing coming! Zuko was there for me, he's always been there for me! So why won't you? Why can't you support me on the one thing that would give me closure?"
"Katara, the monks always say to—"
"I don't care what the monks said, Aang! I am not a monk! I am Katara from the Southern Water Tribe. I am not you! Why don't you understand that?"
"Katara–"
"I'm sorry, Aang," She gulped, swallowing the lump in her throat, "But if you're going to shame me for killing my mother's murderer then I don't think we can be friends anymore."

"zk is mostly katara-centric" first off, so what? And secondly, we love them both equally. Katara gets more hate than any of the other characters. As a brown girl, she can't get too emotional. She can't bloodbend because then she'll be "evil", and she can't be nuanced or too complex.
Outside of zks and the occasional Katara stan, who else is gonna ride and die for her character?? Casual fans who don't even remember what happened in the show?? Antis?? Just shut up already, you sound like a broken record.

Raquel deserves better. I never really had any thoughts about her before this arc, just because she showed up in the last episodes of season 1 before immediately being delegated to basically a background character. But from what the brief moments we’ve seen of her in this arc, she seems like a genuinely interesting character.
Zatanna got the same treatment in a way, but not this bad. But at least with Zatanna, we had half a season from season 1 to get to know her. With Raquel, with have none of that. So when she’s put in the background again, it’s worse because this was our chance to finally to see who she was.
I’m happy for Green Lantern: The Animated Series fans, that they got to see Razer again. I consider myself a huge fan of Conner, I think he’s the most dynamic from the original cast and seeing him in the Phantom Zone is interesting. I think Gar’s storyline is compelling and I liked seeing him finally get help. But it was done at the expense of Raquel, a character who still has not been given her due and a chance to shine.
I’m not sure that makes sense, just how I feel.

Okay, real question, why did they send Artemis undercover in season 2? They had to jump hoop after hoop to pull it off, when they had a Team member with the ability to naturally change her appearance and could pull off playing a character for months on end? Yes, Artemis is most likely a better combatant, but they still could have had M’gann have access to telekinesis and/or telepathy by passing her off as meta human assassin?
Conner and M’gann could have had a really compelling storyline if they had them break up, and Conner believed he never got the chance to make things right before M’gann ‘died’ if they kept Conner out of the loop, at least for a couple episodes. Wally and Artemis could have spent the season realizing that they no longer were willing to pay the price of the vigilante life and plan to leave the Team post-invasion, which would have made Wally’s death hit much harder. As opposed to him being already retired, and doing literally nothing it seemed for six months.
I’m sorry, I just feel like the two storylines for the main couples should have been switched.

Tom and Sabine should know Marinette is Ladybug.
I don’t mean that in the ‘Marinette is a bad liar and they should know by this point’ but in that Marinette should have told them from day one kind of thing.
I feel like it would have emphasized the distant relationship between Gabriel and Adrien. Gabriel and Adrien are cold and distant, keeping secrets from each other, locked in an unknown battle of wills for the soul of Paris. Adrien can not tell his father because he knows his father would find a way to take it from him, Hawkmoth or not being involved.
But in contrast, Marinette has no secrets from her parents. They unequivocally support her and are open and loving. They support her being a superhero and do anything they can to help her. Her parents are concerned, but know Marinette is smart and capable of being a hero. Until Marinette steps away on her own, they would never dream of taking it from her.

ZKMonth22 Day 29: Avatar Katara
“Excellent work, Prince Zuko,” Fire Lord Ozai said, looking down on the kneeling form of the son he’d banished not that long ago. “You made quick work of what seemed an insurmountable task. Maybe there’s hope for you yet.”
Zuko nodded and was dismissed from the throne room, head reeling.
Somehow he’d managed to capture the Avatar, a young woman from the Southern Water Tribe. Despite reports that all the waterbenders from the South had been captured or killed, Zuko had had a sneaking suspicion that that was where the Avatar was, powers dormant until needed.
When he’d raided her village, she’d needed them, using a waterbending move to shoot fire at him, shocking everyone in the vicinity including herself. Except him. She’d done just what he’d hoped one of them would.
Before any of them could react any more than stare in stunned silence, Zuko had tackled the girl, putting the cuffs on her before she could deflect or retaliate, and pulling her to her feet by the chain.
“Thank you for your contribution to the war effort,” he’d said to the gathered tribespeople. One of them, a boy not much older than the girl in chains, surged forward, but was shoved to the ground by one of Zuko’s guards.
“Katara!” he’d cried as Zuko pulled the girl away.
The next morning, Zuko woke up to a servant with a scroll on a platter, sealed with his father’s seal. He sat up, took the scroll, and dismissed the servant before splitting it open.
When he read his father’s order, his eyes widened.
It was his job to break the girl’s spirit? How on earth was he supposed to do that?
He tossed the scroll aside and then thought better of it, tucking it in a hiding place he knew Azula wouldn’t be able to find before pulling on his every day robes and stepping out into the hallway.
Getting to the specially made dungeon wasn’t difficult, of course. Zuko had been present when it was dedicated, almost four years ago now. Back when the previous Avatar had accidentally died in the altercation meant to capture him, Ozai realized they needed to find the new one and keep them alive.
The difficult part was going to be doing whatever needed to be done to break this girl, make it so she didn’t want to leave or fight. Maybe even work for them, he guessed, if he could accomplish such a thing.
With a sigh, Zuko signaled for the guard to unlock the door and let him in.
Unfortunately for Zuko but definitely fortunately for Katara, he decided in the moment between him being in the hallway and him being in her cell that the best course of action would be to get to know her. Act like he was on her side. Like he was trustworthy.
Unfortunately for Zuko, this led to him learning a lot about her and beginning to actually like her. Maybe even see the errors of the Fire Nation’s ways.
Fortunately for Katara, this led to him eventually deciding to let her out, telling his father that she was harmless when in actuality he wanted to get both of them out of the capital.
It didn’t hurt that he’d turned to his uncle for advice on how to handle the Avatar, either.
Their escape from the capital was so spontaneous they hadn’t even known when it was going to happen. Iroh bundled them out of the palace in the middle of the night and onto the ship Zuko had used to find her, the one Iroh owned and crewed. They immediately set sail for the Southern Water Tribe to retrieve Katara’s brother, make apologies to her people, and come up with a plan for them to retreat deeper into the South Pole because once they were discovered missing that would be the first place the Fire Nation would go. Thankfully Katara was able to waterbend them through the ocean so that they traveled twice as quickly as they would have otherwise.
Once Sokka was on board, figuratively and literally, and the rest of their tribe safe, they set a course for the Earth Kingdom and a new ship.
To Zuko’s surprise, when they were on the open water again, Katara kissed him on the cheek. She walked away, leaving him stunned with his hand on his cheek, wondering why she’d done it. He’d been the one who’d kidnapped her in the first place, after all.
“It looks like apologetic action works wonders with Water Tribe members,” his uncle mused.

Firelord Zuko always enjoys Ambassador Katara’s presence when she visits the Fire Nation. They always share the best time together, laughing, connecting, working on close-to-heart projects. However this time, he can’t pinpoint why, but it feels… different… 😏
A first for me… COLOURS!! Still work to do of course, but I was really proud of myself for trying something new. And I love Katara so much in this!

Zutara Month 2022 Day 10: Tui and La
Hello everybody! So, I have finally finished my latest @zutaramonth entry. It is a salute to @gemgirl28 fic “The one where they got engaged.” Now I will admit this is still very much a WIP since I still need to add color and some background music but for the sake of me being able to do the other prompts I am presenting what I have so far. I hope you all enjoy it and I swear Gem, this will look some much better once I’m able to add the final touches. 🙂
