Criminal Minds: The Protégé Chapter 1

Ch 1: Please, Not Another Auditor.

Blurb: After deciding to leave the BAU, Spencer is now a full time professor at the FBI Academy, teaching profiling and criminology. Spencer is struggling to live life without the BAU, but that is to be expected when it has been all he has known for almost 2 decades. The BAU meanwhile, struggled to find someone to fill the genius shaped hole in the team when he left, and they still are struggling. At least, that's how the newest profiler, Agent Grace Matthews feels. Grace is good at what she's good at, it's why the bureau accepted her earlier than most. But how could anyone live up Dr. Reid's legacy? So, when Grace answers a call intended for her desk's previous owner, she jumps at the chance to meet her predecessor and ask him for some advice. Together, they find a kinship… but unfortunately, they also uncover a disturbing pattern in the deaths of inmates and patients the BAU have helped put away.

Author's Note: You might have recognised this story from it's previous iteration on Ao3. I had a bit of a personal crisis and deleted my account. So I am re-editing what I have saved on my computer and reuploading it with some fixed continuity errors now that I finished CM Evolution. Will be cross posted here and on Ao3. This fic is dedicated to giving Spencer a happy ending, serving my desire to write crime/mystery and getting my horrific idea's for unsubs out of my head. Set in 2023, and mostly canon compliant. Five years ago: Honolulu women's state penitentiary, Hawaii, April 29th 2017

‘So, what do you think detective?’ Rossi asked as the guard buzzed them through to the observation room.

‘Chief thinks based on the evidence before this fourth victim showed up, we caught our girl.’ Detective Fahnu sighed.

‘That’s all well and good, but I asked what you think Mark, cause this is a real bad time to call in a favour. Back home, a real spaghetti stick of an FBI agent, who happens to be like family to me, is in the clink, and we’re busting our asses trying to get him out before he dies. And you calling me here means I had to ask my boss if I can fly off to Hawaii for a weekend. It looks real bad, okay? So you better have a gut churning reason to keep me here, or I’m gone.’

‘It’s more head spinning than gut churning,’ Fahnu nodded through the mirrored glass window at the inmate sitting cuffed to the desk. ‘It’s just never sat right how fast we closed this one. Kauai is a small island, Li’hue is an even smaller town, people are terrified and out for blood, it’s been bad for tourism, and the local government is calling for heads Dave. Chief wanted this case solved fast. We made a profile, and she fit the bill.

‘She’s a loner, got the whole Wednesday Addams thing goin’ for her, spends her free time in cemeteries, works at a funeral home, no friends at school, quiet, never had a boyfriend or anything like that. But had a good family, didn’t so much as sneeze out of turn in public, school, work, even here she is a model prisoner after the first month. We all knew her at the station, not from any trouble, but she was a paper waster, reporting dead animals, reporting goddamn rocks being moved, cats that went missing, insisting there was a serial killer out there… well what do you know, one turns up, and she inserts herself into the investigation, you people said they do that. So with no other leads or suspects, she starts looking promising. So we got a warrant, and we found… well you know what we found and then there was the internet history.

'And here we are eight months later. I’m not sure what to think Dave, cause I know her family and character witnesses, they’re good people, they don’t lie. But neither does evidence and until this new victim showed up, all of it pointed to her. Someones playing games and I don’t know who it is.’

‘And she plead guilty?’ Rossi asked.

‘I’m not even sure about that anymore, you have the case file there?’

‘Yeah?’

‘Does it have her records while in Kauai Jail?’

Rossi flicked through it again, he saw her 3 weeks here in solitary till she turned 18 and could be placed in a cell in E block, but strangely her transfer and county jail records were missing. ‘No.’

Detective Fahnu passed him a yellow envelope. ‘These somehow never made it across my desk until this week after number four showed up.’ Rossi opened the folder and winced. ‘As soon as I saw those… I knew I made the right call asking you to come. I can’t sleep Dave, I gotta know we caught the right one.’

‘Well, either way you’ve got someone else to catch, the new victim had traces of Semen still on them?’

‘You’re right, we’re running it now hopefully it'll give us a lead, I'm sorry I can’t stay for this, we’re conducting family interviews in an hour, I at least need to be there on conference call but, let me know how this goes. I appreciate this a lot.’

‘Don’t sweat it, I’ll call you tonight, when this is done. Take care Mark.’ Rossi waved the detective off and took one more look over the files, especially the new ones from the county jail.

He observed the girl in the interview room. Her head hung over the desk as she leant on her elbows and bounced her leg. Her buzzed cropped hair now starkly different from the long curly mane in the mugshot that had been taken in November last year. She looked up and peered at the glass, only able to see her reflection, but somehow she sensed his stare and met his eyes.

It was time.

Quantico FBI Academy, VA Thursday July 2023 11:15 am

‘And it is this repeated and obsessive element of an M.O. that can indicate a paraphilia. Paedophilia, necrophilia are well known paraphilia that are criminal in nature. Now paraphilia can be anything, it doesn’t have to be a criminal act, but it can form part of a signature. Can anyone name what type of paraphilia dendrophilia is?’ he asked.

Blank faces met him. Well, the faces that looked up from their notes frantically were blank. The two auditors of the class always disconcertingly looked like their minds were elsewhere. One day, Spencer sighed quietly to himself. One day someone would know. ‘It’s…’

‘Trees,’ a quiet, unfamiliar voice called out hesitantly from the back row. ‘It’s an attraction to trees, dendro from the Greek dendron meaning tree, philia also Greek, meaning strong fondness and love amongst equals.’

The voice was not one of his students this term; he was certain. He could pick their voices. Spencer swiveled his head, scanning his students to get a glimpse of the first person to answer that question since he started asking it. His suspicions were confirmed; she was not supposed to be in this class. The voice belonged to a young woman, probably early twenties, with dark hair in braided pigtails on either side of her head. She fidgeted with her glasses before stuffing her hands back into her cardigan pockets. Their eyes met and she gave him a small smile.

‘…Yes, that’s right, trees. Any ideas what kind of behaviour might be displayed in a signature if a criminal has dendrophilia?’

‘They might like to perform their crimes outdoors in wooded areas, or bury victims under trees so they can revisit crime scenes and get off on the fact the trees are being sustained by a victim's decomposition. Or they might hide bodies in hollow trees, it would depend on an unsub’s preferences,’ she suggested, he could see she had a lot more to say, but she sat there, nervously looking at other students, as if prompting them to say something.

It was then Spencer placed her. He was right; she wasn't a current student. She had been in a few of his classes when he was teaching part time, two years ago. He couldn’t put a name to her face or much of her cohort to be honest. It bothered him. They had switched to online correspondence in the first semester of 2020. Only the first two classes with her cohort were in person, in which she had been silent. But, she should have graduated by now. Why was she here? Oh God, please not another auditor, he thought.

He cleared his throat, turned his attention back to the class. ‘Does anyone who's actually in this class have something to add?’ His gaze might as well have been poisoned the way some of the young students avoided it. ‘No? Okay, I know I blindsided you with that one, but, our guest is right. It may seem inconceivable to some of you that people would actually become aroused by trees, but in my experience paraphilia can be developed from anything and everything.’

He glanced back at her. Now she was clutching a canvas messenger bag tightly against her chest with one hand, and texting with the other. She obviously wasn’t here for the content or to audit him. So, he deduced that she was waiting for him to finish. He tried his best to continue as normal, now hoping that she wasn’t one of his fans that his lectures seemed to attract. ‘Now the assigned reading for next week will go further into how a paraphilia can be imprinted on a person, but I thought the basics of paraphilia would be an important background for the case study this week because it interacts with the stages of development and the importance of a love map. This is a case study from 1995…’

Spencer concluded the class five minutes early and packed up his things, warily glancing at her. The canvas messenger bag she had with her had a few pins on it for personalisation, but the way she gripped it so tight made him dread what was in it. She didn’t appear armed, but she seemed dressed in a way that would convey she was non threatening. It was not unusual, but it was certainly unique for a woman her age; a plain beige cardigan over a pale-floral-patterned collared blouse, navy culottes, and smart, vintage-style, leather loafers. Paired with her youthful hair style, it made him wary. It screamed sweet and innocent, like it was a purposeful statement. If she had consciously decided to dress that way, it was bad news for him.

As she stood, he observed she was on the tall side for a woman, at least 5'9 was his estimate from measuring her against the door frame. She smiled at the students file past her as she held the door open for them. She glanced at him expectantly as the last student left the hall. Suspicion turned to dread. He needed to go. He had no more classes for the day, but she wouldn’t know that. He power walked toward the door.

She smiled at him politely. ‘Dr Reid, I'll only need a few minutes of your time-’

‘I’m sorry. I have a class across the other side of the academy, I have to go, another time perhaps-’

‘Umm… No you don’t, it's Thursday,' she said with a chuckle.

He stilled. How would she know that? Had she been stalking him? His heart hammered, and he started to walk again, quickening his pace. He had to get to a populated area. Now.

‘Dr Reid?’ she called after him. Her shoes made no sound behind him. How was she so quiet for someone that tall? He glanced behind him to see she was two steps behind. ‘Dr Reid, I'm sorry if I spoke out of turn back there. Please, I just want to talk!’

‘I really must go.’

‘Okay, maybe we can sit down and have coffee some other time? I know you like a double espresso and double-choc-chip muffins. They're my favourite too, though I prefer tea.'

That chilled him to the bone. He began jogging. How long had she been watching him?

‘Doctor, where are you-’ He glanced back, and she was right there, her long legs striding to keep pace with him.

Oh God, she was chasing him. He didn’t have a gun right now. He didn’t carry one while he taught. This hall had cameras and hundreds of FBI cadets in classes behind doors right now. Would she really be that bold? He turned to face her. Perhaps he could reason his way out of this.

‘Look, this won’t end well for you. I don’t know what you think you can do to me, but there’s no way you can get away with anything here-’

‘What?’ She stepped back. Her eyes widened. ‘Oh no!’ She took another step back, ‘Oh no, no no… I’m not stalking you, I’m so sorry! Oh, the schedule and the muffin thing—God I must have come off so creepy, please don't freak out okay? I just… I’m so sorry,’ she fumbled out an apology. Her hand slowly went to the front pocket of her bag, but he didn't panic; the pocket was too small to hold a firearm. He kept his distance, ready to run if he needed to.

Her body language had changed completely. Before she seemed excited and nervous, but now she was utterly, and unmistakably, mortified. Spencer almost felt sorry for her.

‘I’m just grabbing my badge, sorry I-I tried calling to let you know I was coming, but Garcia said you were a technophobe, and I couldn’t wait for snail mail-’ He tilted his head, Garcia? ‘-she also told me your coffee preferences if I needed to bribe you… And I rang the criminology department secretary to see what your office hours were. Vivian, booked me an appointment in your calendar… but that… runs… on email… So you mustnt’ve seen it—you had no idea I was coming did you? God I was really early and weird… I-I- didn’t mean to scare you.’ She held out a familiar leather card holder to him. ‘I’m Special Agent Grace Matthews, I’m a profiler with your old unit, I’m new. I-I-we‘ve met before but, um… You might not remember me. Sorry I really wanted to meet you for a while now, I really admire you… and oh God this has gone so wrong… I am so sorry, I can come back later,’ she finished rambling and stood there, looking as if she wanted the earth to open up and swallow her.

It was like he was seeing himself at 22, struggling to fit in a crowd of suits and stern faces knowing full well that if it weren't for his intellect, he would not be there. He inspected her badge. He noted the birthdate of 12/25/1998. Considering it was a requirement that an applicant be 23 for admission to the bureau, and Grace was currently 24 and already a profiler, he suspected that she might have a similar skill set to him. He remembered both JJ and Garcia mentioned they had a new unit member earlier this year. He remembered JJ saying, “Oh Spence, you’d get on like a house on fire. Never met anyone else who could talk about cholera for 30 minutes, and then say they’re not an expert, they just dabble.”

Spencer offered her a smile. ‘Edward Leonski,’ he said.

‘Wha-Oh,’ she nodded sheepishly, ‘Yep, that was me. Eddie Leonski, “The Brownout Strangler”, I mean, I wasn’t the strangler… That was my final paper… you’d probably remember it cause of the spelling and grammar errors.’

‘No, I have an eidetic memory. I remember everyone’s term papers, but I remember yours particularly because I felt awful only being able to give you a distinction… because of the grammar and spelling mistakes. But the case you analysed, I’d never heard of before, which is always a welcome surprise. It gets a bit boring reading papers about the Zodiac, Bundy, Dhalmer over and over. But you chose a challenge, using original court transcripts, statements and archived letters as sources. And I agree with your theory that he was a narcissist with gynophobia, yet an erotic fascination with women's voices at the same time. The mimicry and self-soothing talk he practiced under stress was especially intriguing, and then added the element of the political tensions of the case. It was a really fascinating read. I had to look into it myself. I agree it is a shame that they declared him sane. There was a lot that was unique about his case that could have been learned if he wasn’t executed.’

‘I know right,’ she grinned. ‘But then again, Sanitariums in the 1940s are not something I would ever wish upon anyone.’

‘No, that’s true,’ he nodded.

Gone was the stuttering and fumbling. Good, he’d hoped a shared interest would make her more comfortable.

‘I'm sorry for scaring you Dr Reid, can I start again?’ she asked hopefully.

‘I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions, and not checking my calendar—through my email? I didn’t even know that they were connected. So sure, we can start again, you apparently have an appointment. So good morning Agent Matthews, did you enjoy the lecture?’

‘I did enjoy the lecture, both times actually, but it’s way better in person. I had some spare time today, and I wanted to meet you cause I have some questions for you and… um some news, not official FBI business but, we might want to go somewhere that is not going to get flooded with students in about… Now.’ Doors to the other lecture halls opened and chatty students filled the hallway.

If he was honest with himself, he had nothing better to do today, and genuinely he missed having people he could enthuse with. Students were intimidated by him, most faculty members were solely academics and they often were disturbed by his anecdotes, and well auditors made him nervous. Not to mention Matthews’ suggestion of muffins had him hungry now.

‘You know what, I actually could really use a coffee. There is a van that parks close to the Eastside of the academy. Their muffins are usually fresh around now too.’

‘Awesome,’ her shoulders relaxed, and they began walking together through the crowd of students, ‘I’ll shout then, after the scare I gave you, I think it’s only fair.’

NOTES: I haven't marked this mature yet. not sure how it works cause it has been ages since I posted a fic on tumblr, have no idea how it's going to handle a criminal minds fic. But oh well.

ALSO GRACE AND REID ARE NOT GOING TO BE THE ROMANTIC FOR EACH OTHER. IN THE TAGS I TRIED TO MAKE THAT CLEAR BUT I KNOW SOME PEOPLE DON'T READ THEM…. but don't worry I have someone else in mind to pair Spencer with, and Grace might go a bit "Operation parent trap" style to get them together. Also Grace will get a love interest to… Hopefully though she won't be too much like Reid and end up with her very own Graeve.

Better Than Okay

A/N: Not sure how I feel about this one. Kind of just needed to write this even though it’s kind of crappy. I tried to keep this one short, and for this one the apocalypse just hasn’t happened. Rain  pattered softly on the ground as small puddles formed in the dips and cracks of the concrete. The clouds, although a soft grey, still let light through, reflecting off the streets and sidewalks. Diego nervously ambled down the street to the place he once called home: The Academy. 

He almost couldn’t stand the fact that he’s walking towards it at the very moment. Memories of his younger years played through his mind and he couldn’t be sure whether he liked that or not. The torment his father put him through -- what he made Diego do -- will never be erased from his mind. His relationship with his siblings flipped and flopped over the years, and now he wasn’t sure where he stood with them. The only reason he made his way towards the lonely mansion, was because of his mother, the only person who he felt cared for him. Well besides you. Now standing in front of the door, he began having doubts about this.

I have to. At least Mom should know.

Sighing, Diego pushed the old, large doors open and stepped out of the rain. Small droplets of water fell from the fabric of his jacket, and splattered on the floor. Closing the doors, Diego finally took a look around and scoffed. The tiles remained the same, the scratches on the railing were still there from when he was younger, and the damn chandelier hung in the same space too.

Nothing has changed. Well almost.

The already empty space felt more lonely than usual. He knew why, but wouldn’t bring himself to admit it. Walking up the stairs and down one of the numerous halls, he glanced at his siblings’ rooms as he passed by, heart clenching. He didn’t even mean to go this way, but yet here he was. 

I came here for one reason. Just the one, then get out, and go back home to her -- the both of them. 

Diego made his way to where he knew his mother would be. However, as he approached the side of the mansion's top level slowly, Grace wasn’t to be found. Diego noticed her cross stitch was still there even though she was not. It wasn’t often that you would find her cross stitch without her. Heart rate speeding up slightly, Diego quickened his pace to the two cushiony, blue velvet chairs. As he was searching for signs of his mother and thinking the worst a voice behind him spoke.

“Diego?”

Spinning around, Diego came face with his smiling mother as his whole body relaxed, relieved she was alright. Grace moved forward touching Diego’s arm, which calmed him even more. Diego looked down.

Now that I’m here, what do I even say?

Grace, sensing Diego’s mood shift slightly, brought her hand up to Diego’s face so that he would meet her gaze. 

“Is there something you need to tell me, Diego?” she asked, not even acknowledging that she hasn’t seen him for months.

Diego paused, followed by a sigh. She needs to know first.

“I came -- well I wanted to tell you that I’m -- I-I-I’m -m-m-m,” he practically whispered, hating how his stutter always showed up at the worst time.

“Shhh. It’s okay, Diego. Just picture the words in your head,” Grace said kindly -- no . . . motherly. Taking a deep breathe, he started again, looking down.

“I wanted to tell you that I’m a -- ” he paused, “ -- that I’m a . . . dad.” He whispered the last part, almost not believing it himself. Slowly looking up, Diego took in his mother’s reaction. Slowly a large grin made its way to Grace’s face as her eyes lit up. She grabbed both of Diego’s hands in her own and hums. 

“I guess that would make me a grandmother then. I’ve never thought about being a grandmother, but I think I’d like to try it,” she said matter-of-factly in a chipper tone. Diego, happy of how supportive his mother was being, chuckled at her reaction. 

“I guess it does.”

“I can’t wait. I’m so proud of you, Diego. You’re a father and I have no doubt that you’ll be great at it,” Grace finished. Noticing her son’s silence she asked, “Are you okay, Diego?”

Diego had never been so overwhelmed with emotion. Diego was so scared of being a father if he was being honest, but his mother’s words made all of his doubts wash away. 

“Yeah, I’m okay.” He was going to be okay, you were going to be okay, and his little girl would turn out pretty okay -- well better than okay.

now im an artistic and expressive person. i love singing and acting! especially with acting, for some reason, pretending to be someone else grounds me in a way? i have no idea how to explain it but after ive finished a monologue, i always feel so calm and so in tune with myself. i also LOVE getting to know peoples little quirks and interests. no matter how "weird" they deem it (within reasoning ofc) i love getting to know what makes people happy! i also get really excited over little things. both literally and figuratively. i love tiny objects which is why the secret world of arriety is my fave studio ghibli movie hAHAHA theyre just so cute and tiny :( and the way you have to handle each item with such care because theyre so small just warms my heart. i also want a ferret. like as a pet. theyre literally the perfect animal theyre so small but theyre energetic MANNNN THATS ALL I WANT THEYD BE SO MUCH FUN TO PLAY WITH. i also adore handmade items. whatever it is, from a cake to a stuffed animal, i love handmade things cause you can see the love and care they put into making it. it doesn't have to be perfect, hell it's better if it isnt because you can see the humanity in the item, you can see that a human being actually made this and it rly does warm my heart :(( 

now for relationships, its the little things that matter the most to me. if they remembered a small detail i told them, or if they make sure to do something because they know i'll like it, it's just the small details that get me because that means they're really listening and really do care about me.more often than not you'll find me spaced out and find that ive slipped into my imagination again. i do love my little world of scenarios ive created in my head but thats cause i like it more than the present but i know i only do that cause i dont have someone who im reallllyyy close to and someone who i can talk to and be present with so i think once i get into a relationship ill want to spend most of my time with them because they make the present a little more bareable :)

With Crystal being an OC, I strictly try to be as close to Canon as possible as I have to carefully add her into everything without being too involved. I even revised her Bio to include extra details pertaining to the Anime. Though, I would consider seeing her as a side character more than a big part of the main story, but she does get much involved with Ichigo’s/Soul Societies Adventures~ However, feed back about her backstory if it’s close to canon is always appreciated, or any feedback in general!

Crystal has unique facial features, especially her E Y E S!! I can’t recall if any other Shinigami have Silver Hues, but I think that’s one of Crystal’s best features! You never see her Zanpakuto unless you happen to fighting along side her considering she hides it away inside her actual B O D Y! She can be charming when she wants to be, and big softy once you get close to her!

Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  

Pfffttt, okay...umm... She definitely has a biased opinions on Humans since she passed away in her Human Death. For a Shinigami, one has to be able to somewhat tolerate the Human World, but Crystal refuses to even find something good in Humans since her death. She’s quite content with being alone, and no use for Friendships hardly so it makes it hard for her comrades to trust her. Crystal will try every attempt to isolate herself from others, but wouldn’t mind going out drinking with them either. With hardly any experience on what Friendship is, it’ll take awhile for her to open up to the ideal that she does H A V E friends. 

What inspired you to rp your muse?

Wow, um... I am not 100% sure to be honest! I just got really interested in Bleach a long time ago, and it just happened to be the time I was exploring writing. My usernames in chat rooms, or even social media would be: Shadowcrystal. I think that’s how I got her name, and just then all of her details were coming to me; that’s how she was made!

What keeps your inspiration going?  

Not going to lie, it is always hard for me to get interactions with Crystal since I’ve started on Tumblr many years ago, this is my third account for Crystal tbh. OC’s are so hard to get interactions with Canon, or even other OC’s. It’s never stopped me from trying to get interactions (because I understand the people’s right to be selective & private), but since I have re-made Crystal’s account, I have gotten more kind, and loving feedback about her. I love hearing you guys comment on my OC, telling me that you guys love her back story, and even my portrayal of her. It always makes my day, and makes me want to be better for you!!

If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?

Of course!! I am not picky at all when it comes to my OC, or my Canon Muses. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if you C A L M L Y come talk to me about it; I am more than willing to adjust it, or involve your said Muse into it!

If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?

This one is tricky cause I am generally a nice person, but if I feel like it was sent out to be rude, or hateful instead of stating your opinion; I will not tolerate it. I do not mind people coming to me to give me pointers/writing references to better my writing, but telling me to straight up give up my muse, there are better portrayals, and deactivate is not appreciated!

If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  

In all honestly, I am surprised I haven’t gotten any thing like that, but it would defiantly drop my mood, and I would delete the message. With that mood drop, I would probably make a vague message, and just disappear for the rest of day until I’m ready to return.

Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  

YES!! English is my first language, and sometimes I think faster than I type. If I ever mess anything up, come to me in IM, and I’ll fix my error.

Do you think you are easy going as a mun? 

I believe that I am, but some people would say that they don’t know hoe to approach me. I can assure you guys I am a smol bean, and I give lots of loves!!

I MEAN HE LITERALLY GAVE AN ARM FOR HIS BROTHER'S SOUL AND WOULD HAVE GIVEN HIS OWN HEART IF IT MEANT HIS BROTHER LIVED, IDEAL OLDEST SIBLING TROPE THERE NO BUT THE WAY HE LOVES AL IS MY FAVORITE THING AND I WILL FIGHT YOU IF YOU EVER SUGGEST THE ELRIC BOYS COULD HATE EACH OTHER No but like seriously I cannot get enough of Ed and Al and their pure bond , I cry a lot about these brothers - SIDE NOTE HE WAS SO YOUNG WHEN HE AND AL PERFORMED HUMAN TRANSMUTATION TO TRY AND BRING BACK THEIR MOM, HE WAS ONLY LIKE 11 OR 12????!!!! I fully understand how hard the pain of losing a parent is , and how it's worsened by the surviving parent being distant ( even though it wasn't Hohenheim's fault ) Bruh I lost my mom when I was 9 and if alchemy existed in our reality ??? I high-key would have tried to bring her back . Going through grief like that in childhood really changes you , but then adding in the extra trauma the boys go through???? LOSING TWO LIMBS, THE PHYSICAL BODY OF YOUR BROTHER, AND FAILING HORRIFICALLY TO RESURRECT YOUR MOTHER ALL AT ONCE????? Ed my poor baby He's so strong despite all of the trauma and I love him so much ???? He's a HUGE influence on me actually - Smol ( not at the end of the series but for most of it !) bean - Literally wears his signature snazzy red coat because he thinks red is a badass color ( it is !) - Worries 24/7 about other people more than himself - NO BUT LIKE WHEN HE AND LING GOT LITERALLY EATEN ALIVE ED WAS 100% MORE WORRIED ABOUT AL THAN HIMSELF - When he finds out Scar killed Winry's parents, he's shocked and furious but doesn't kill him, and later on stops Winry from killing him herself because he knows that it's not the right path and that revenge isn't necessarily good - LING. LINGGGGG. HE NEVER STOPS BEING FRIENDS WITH LING EVEN WHEN LING GETS RECKLESS AND BECOMES A HOMUNCULUS, ED STILL STAYS BEST BROS WITH LING AND I JUST??? I JUST LOVE THIS FRIENDSHIP - Adopts half the people who've tried to murder him and becomes their friend ( Edward Elric was Steven Universe-ing before Steven Universe ) Most notably he adopted two chimera guys ( human animal hybrids) that had tried to kill him and then later saved his life ( it was a complicated situation , they helped Ed get un-impaled ) and they become fairly crucial in the last boss battle later on - His relationship with Roy Mustang , adoptive father figure extraordinaire Like Roy is THE reason none of the top brass military guys found out Ed and Al performed illegal alchemy and he comes up with all the cover stories and excuses in the book ( you have a future as a con artist Roy , but you have to be the leader of Amestris so save that for retirement ) . Like Ed bickers endlessly with Roy but they both respect each other so much and worry about each other a lot and they are family ???? - WINRY ROCKBELL. WINRY. ROCKBELL. W I N R Y. R O C K B E L L. HIS ENTIRE RELATIONSHIP WITH HER IS JUST SO ORGANIC AND RAW AND REALISTIC AND YES, THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE A LOVE STORY. Ed has so much obvious respect for her from the very beginning - literally making special trips to visit her whenever his automail is damaged because he KNOWS that nobody can fix it like she can ? Even though there's probably lots of other automail mechanics , it's always Winry for Ed. He trusts her and only her! And the way he looks at her , the way he worries about her and tries his damnedest to keep her out of harm's way , the gentle way he speaks to her when she's most vulnerable .... I love how much he loves her. It's beautiful and sweet and so so pure. - He tries really hard not to kill anyone even if they're trying to kill him??? He's got such high value for life and I love him for it - His sheer determination???? LIKE THE STRENGTH IT MUST HAVE TAKEN AFTER ALL HE SUFFERED TO KEEP GOING IS JUST.IT'S STAGGERING. - He's a genius but he's also very down to earth ??? Like he's actually very very VERY smart but plays it off like it's NOTHING! But he could read high level alchemy texts as a child well enough to actually try and succeed in performing alchemy !( and so did Al!) Pretty sure your average six year old couldn't do that. And he comes up with battle strategies on the fly , alters his alchemy within seconds of learning new information , uses experimental techniques often , and is THE YOUNGEST STATE ALCHEMIST EVER IN AMESTRIS. He's skilled enough that when he's stuck on a train hijacked by terrorists and Roy hears about it , Roy laughs . ' Fullmetal's on that train . We can go home early , boys. They don't stand a chance. ' And Roy was RIGHT! Ed and Al take down a group of armed terrorists with barely a scratch . And other military officials see Ed the same way! Like no one's ever worried that Ed might lose a fight, they're just worried he'll get hurt winning . ( okay Winry is worried he might lose but don't tell him that ) He's a prodigy and so many people respect him ??? - SUCCESSFULLY BOUND HIS BROTHER'S SOUL TO ARMOR This is a very rare technique and incrediblely hard to do. It takes most alchemists years of study and training to even attempt alchemizing souls. And Ed did it on his first try while in a HUGE amount of pain and suffering severe blood loss. - He always tries to learn from other people Ed always tries to keep growing and changing his view of the world and never belittles other cultures or beliefs ( except in the case of Leto , but that religion was a fraud and Ed knew it ) - Tries hard to better lives with his alchemy and devotes his life to helping people who've suffered due to alchemy - Makes the best faces - OKAY BUT HEAR ME OUT THE ONLY TIMES HE CRIED IN CANON WERE RIGHT AFTER THE TRANSMUTATION THING HAPPENS AND HE'S SO AFRAID THAT AL MIGHT HATE HIM BECAUSE AL LOST HIS BODY AND ED BLAMED HIMSELF, AND WAS SO UPSET OVER IT THAT HE CRIED HIMSELF TO SLEEP FOR DAYS OVER IT. AND THE SECOND TIME HE CRIES IN CANON IS IN THE LAST BOSS BATTLE SCENE, AFTER THE ENEMY IS DEFEATED AND AL HAS BEEN BOLD AND RECKLESS AND SACRIFICED HIMSELF TO GET ED'S ARM BACK FROM THE TRUTH GUY, AND ED IS DESPERATE TO GET AL BACK AND HOHENHEIM OFFERS HIMSELF AS THE TOLL TO OPEN THE GATE. HERE HE IS, DISTRAUGHT AND WOUNDED AND E WEARY AND AFRAID HE MIGHT NEVER SEE HIS BROTHER AGAIN, AND THE FATHER THAT'S BEEN ABSENT SO LONG IS SUDDENLY SAYING TO HIM' YOU AND YOUR BROTHER ARE THE MOST PRECIOUS THINGS IN MY LIFE, LET ME GIVE MY LIFE TO BRING HIM BACK. Adventurer by Name, Adventurer by Nature - Chapter 1

A/N: So this is basically an interpretation of the True Pacifist Route of Undertale, based on @therealjacksepticeye ’s playthrough of the game. The protagonist is my own character, not Frisk (no offence to them, I love the smol bean) but it follows the events of Jack’s playthrough and the dialogue is a word for word transcript from Jack’s videos. I started writing this about a year ago, if not longer, and I think it’s finally time to share it. If people like it, I’ll continue to upload it as I write it. This is just chapter 1, ending just before you enter the ruins, after your encounter with Flowey. In my word document, the characters’ dialogue is actually in the Undertale font but it doesn’t translate over to Tumblr so you’ll just have to imagine it’s in that awesome font.

They zipped up their jacket, laced their shoes and donned their backpack before grabbing the rope and harness.

Approaching the cliff edge, Kit Ross stared down into the deep, dark depths of Mount Ebott.

Legend has it that, hundreds of years ago, the village had been inhabited by a coven of witches and warlocks who had taken a drastic step in the monster vs human war, banishing the monsters underneath the mountain with a magic spell.

It was rarely taught in history classes, though, so it’s more like a myth. Either way, Kit was going to find out soon enough: they’d gotten bored and decided to go camping in the caves for a few nights.

They secured the rope around a boulder and clipped their harness to it. After a double check, they turned on their headlamp and climbed down into the abyss.

Wait, wasn’t it supposed to be getting darker the further they descended…? Yet, the cavern was strangely light at the bottom. Kit turned their head round to try and get a better look at whatever was emitting the mysterious glow: big mistake. In taking their eyes off the rock face before them, they failed to notice a particularly sharp, jagged rock that jutted out from the wall. It snagged on their rope and, before they knew it, snapped the rope and sent them plummeting to the rocky floor below.

Heart in their mouth, Kit squeezed their eyes shut and braced themselves for the painful impact of their body on the ground. Luckily for them, the rope had snapped just short of a dozen or so feet from the floor, meaning they landed with a heavy thud and a bump to the head, but otherwise relatively unscathed.

Sitting up and brushing off the dust from their clothes, Kit noticed that they had landed in a luminous bed of golden flowers. Odd; there was no one down here to tend for them.

Gingerly rubbing their head, they removed their abseiling gear and packed it into their bag. Walking for a bit, they inspected the nearby area (just rocks and darkness, nothing of interest) before stopping to pull out a water bottle from their bag. Just as they unzipped the rucksack, they heard a voice:

“Howdy!”

Instincts fuelled Kit and they turned, quickly withdrawing their pocket knife. Then it registered- they were stood in front of a yellow-petaled flower…with a face. That apparently just talked.

“…what the fu-”

“I’m Flowey! Flowey the Flower!” exclaimed the plant in a disgustingly sweet voice.

“I… I can see you’re a flower…”

‘How hard did I bang my head?’ they thought, holding the knife tightly.

“Hmm, you’re new to the underground, aren’t ya? Golly, you must be so confused!” cried the shrill voice with a shit-eating grin.

“Yeah, no kidding…” Kit mumbled. They kept the knife raised as they inched closer.

“Someone ought to tell you how things work around here!” Kit rolled their eyes, already sensing the craziness of the situation.

“I guess little old me will have to do! Ready?” Kit nodded hesitantly. “Here we go!”

Suddenly, the room went dark and two spotlights fell upon Kit and ‘Flowey’.

“See that heart?” asked the flower. Kit felt a heavy weight on their chest and looked down to see a red, heart-shaped pendant hanging from their neck on a gold chain. “That’s your soul; the very culmination of your being!”

Yeah, Kit was calling bullshit on this so hard. Nevertheless, they politely signalled for the yellow flower to continue.

“Your soul starts off weak, but can grow strong if you gain a lot of LV!”

Kit glanced down and noticed the pendant was surrounded by a mere layer of glass. They frowned.

“LV?”

“What’s LV stand for? Why, LOVE, of course!” the flower cried.

Kit resisted the urge to cringe.

“You want some love, don’t you?”

“Uhh…” Kit didn’t think so, anyway.

“Don’t worry, I’ll share some with you!” the flower winked and five…blobs appeared around it. Kit’s eyes widened in shock as they started to question life and their sanity.

They were dreaming, right? This couldn’t be real…they pinched themselves just to make sure, but nothing happened.

“Down here, love is shared through little white ‘friendliness pellets’.”

Okay, that definitely sounded fake; “friendliness pellets”? For a split second, Kit could have sworn that the flower’s face switched into a malicious grin, if only for a mere moment, but it could’ve just been a trick of the light. When they blinked, it was smiling, just as before.

“Are you ready? Move around! Get as many as you can!” Suddenly, the white ‘friendliness pellets’ were moving towards Kit.

Now, Kit didn’t make a deliberate move to grab them, but curiosity got the better of them and they didn’t move away from one headed for their arm.

They didn’t know what they expected to happen, but searing hot pain and an open, bleeding wound certainly wasn’t it.

They cried out and grabbed their arm before noticing the flower’s face: a terrifying evil grin.

“You idiot,” came the distorted voice. “In this world, it’s kill or BE killed.”

Kit sneered at the two-faced dick of a plant before them.

“Why would ANYONE pass up an opportunity like this?!” The face turned into a smug smile as the five orbs multiplied into hundreds and encircled Kit, leaving no gap for escape, except…

“DIE,” screeched the monster-plant, and the trap started to close in on Kit slowly. Unfortunately for ‘Flowey’, it wasn’t a very well thought out trap; the orbs hovered at Kit’s waist level, which just happened to be about 3 feet above the ground.

They brandished their knife and, in a very Indiana Jones style move, rolled forward under the bullets. They stabbed the blade through an exposed leaf, pinning it to the floor. The plant released a high-pitched shriek as the trap faded into nothingness.

“I don’t know what the fuck just happened or what the hell you are, but you leave me alone y’hear?!” Kit demanded angrily. ‘Flowey’ nodded (if plants can nod…) and tried to retreat underground again but was hindered by Kit’s knife.

They removed it mercifully, letting the flower go: they never were the one for killing. It quickly disappeared back into the soft earth with a squawk of fear, leaving the cave silent.

Kit sat back, staring at the bleeding wound on their arm. They put the pen-knife back in their bag and went to stand up when they came face to face with a purple fabric and a white insignia, surrounded by white fur. Shocked, they fell back and landed on their arm, inhaling sharply in shock and pain.

“What a terrible creature, torturing such a poor, innocent youth…” came a soft, warm voice from above them.

Kit scrambled back, getting to their feet and pulling their knife out again. They were certainly more scared now; there was no adrenaline, no fear or pain fuelling them now. This was a…a creature at least 3 times larger than Kit, not just some stupid plant. God knew the damage that could be done to them in this moment.

“D-Don’t come too close, I’m not afraid to use this!” they stammered unconvincingly, pen-knife trembling in their hand. This…being…was at least 6 foot tall, if not taller, and resembled some sort of bull or goat. It had small horns on its head and wore a purple…dress? Soft white fur encompassed its whole body, and although it didn’t appear threatening, Kit was extremely on edge.

“Ah, do not be afraid, my child,” said the being, kneeling down to match Kit’s height more, smiling a sincere smile. “I am Toriel, caretaker of the Ruins.” It gestured to the surrounding cave that was a lot less scary in the presence of this…woman? It appeared female, but who was Kit to judge someone’s gender…do animal-monsters even have genders? Either way, this being was no more threatening than a bumble bee bumping into a window on a hot, summer’s day.

“I pass through this place every day to see if anyone has fallen down,” she continued, standing up again. She had to be nearly 7 foot in height, towering over Kit’s tiny 5’6” frame.

“I came here to camp,” they explained, realising how dumb that sounded compared to the fact that the monsters from the legends actually exist. “I was abseiling down when my rope snapped and then I ran into that…thing,” they said, pointing at where the plant had appeared. “I didn’t…expect anyone to be down here,” they admitted, looking back up at the goat-woman-being.

“You are the first human to come here in a long time.”

“Makes sense,” nodded Kit. “No one believes in the myths and legends: they just think this is a normal mountain. When that kid fell down here and was never seen again, people started to avoid it like the plague. Now it…sort of makes sense.” Kit put the knife away in their pocket for easy access and hissed as their burnt arm flexed. As they looked down, they saw something odd – the heart pendant had a small crack in it and was glowing a little less brightly than it had been before. “Huh…guess that weed was right,” they mumbled, fingering it curiously. But…how could a simple necklace actually represent their soul? Kit hadn’t even been aware that souls existed until now.

Toriel gasped when she saw the wound, putting a gentle hand-thing on Kit’s uninjured shoulder. “Come! I will guide you through the catacombs,” she said, leading Kit to a purple archway that they hadn’t spotted before. It appeared to be made of marble, consisting of two huge pillars and a curved segment joining them at the top. Within the curved arch was a strange symbol that sort of looked like wings, in Kit’s eyes.

“This way.”

Kit grabbed their bag and shouldered it, Toriel leading the way further and further into the mountain…
