"Hayden-san."

The frown on her forehead is so deeply engrained Vera has to massage it just to sort out her thoughts. Well, her thoughts about this... one mess of a guy in front of her, if you're asking specifically.

She shakes her head with a sigh, "I've gotta hand it to you. You're one annoying guy." But as straightforward as her words, they don't seem to hold any kind of malice behind them. What is it exactly? Disappointment? Frustration? Empathy?

"Do you think it's worth it?" The librarian murmurs, with a gentler and softer tone this time. "...Sacrificing your inner values at the expense of others, I mean."

Her mauve eyes, despite being covered by her round glasses, are laced with a layer of concern. "Or maybe, is it just a cycle you can't bring yourself out of?"

Noticing how far she is digging, Vera quickly retracts her statement, "Of course, you aren't obligated to tell me anything." As frustrated as she is with this enigma of a man, she knows she mustn't peer beyond what Hayden allows her.

"But at least, you're strong in a way. I'll give you that—" Vera shrugs her shoulders with a resigned expression, "Strong and annoying for not relenting with that chameleon facade of yours."

He's so irritating, she keeps repeating that in her head. Not in a literal way, of course — she is just astonished by how persistent he is with his want to keep on pretending.

But he must be tired too, Vera thinks. She knows her place, she isn't here to be a savior nor a guide for him. She just wants to know why and how, even if she knew it's none of her business.

She should move on with her own life, it's as easy as that. But at the same time, Vera looks at Hayden and wonders... Can he really call his life truly his if he's always living to be someone else?

why did she decide to bring up this topic again? hayden just came here to study for the upcoming test and he hoped that he will find some peace and quiet in this library..

but he forgot about vera and he forgot just how nosy she can be sometimes. well, most of the time actually.

"i don't know what you're talking about, vera-san." hayden replied, trying to stay calm. "now, i'm sorry for saying this, but can you please leave me alone? i prefer studying when it's quiet and i thought that this library will be a perfect place for it."

he looked up from his book.

"don't tell me that i was wrong."

but vera refused to leave him alone and she just kept talking. talking about him pretending to be someone else, talking about his facade, even calling him annoying.. just why does she care about him so much?

well, she was right, hayden had to sacrifice his inner values for others quite often.

he was obedient and polite with azul, always ready to do everything he says. he was cheerful and talkative with cater, pretending to know everything about social media and latest trends. he was pretending to be into video games and anime when he had to deal with idia, he was pretending to understand beauty and hard work around vil, he could become literally anything people want him to be!

and it was.. exhausting.

when it was late and he had to go to his room, hayden often spent his nights crying himself to sleep. he was just so tired from everything.

he actually hated socializing, he hated pretending to be nice, but he still had to do it. there's no other way to make people trust him. and he needs their trust.

it's the only way he can make people truly worship him. he wants everyone to admire him, he wants them to see just how great he is.

because.. he really is great, right? that's what a childhood friend of his used to say.

"if i'm annoying, you're even more annoying than me for not minding your own business." hayden quietly said to himself, the moment vera walked away.

did she hear him? did she not? he couldn't care less at this point. even if she tries to tell others about his real self, they will find it hard to believe her.

also, didn't she want to hear his real opinion for once?
