Batfam x DP Headcanons
This post was inspired by @fakakta-art these are head cannons that will one day be turned into a story but this is basically the set. If I have made a mistake tell me and I will fix it.
Every year Bruce cleans and polishes his family’s Menorah, under Alfred’s careful watch. It is then placed in the window of the family living room.
One of the few items Tim brought over from Drake Manor was his family’s Menorah and Torah. Alfred helps him polish his. It is placed in the window next to Bruce’s.
Dick unironically loves ugly sweaters and gets/gifts them to everyone. He makes sure that the entire family gathers for at least one holiday movie marathon, where the dresscode is pajamas and their festive sweater of choice.
Growing up Jason was too poor to really celebrate Christmas, but his mother did take him to mass and one year they found a small, plastic, silver tree someone threw out. It became a Christmas tradition to decorate their little silver tree with handmade ornaments and things they found.
Back when Jason lived at the Manor, he, Alfred, and Bruce went and found a giant silver tree to put up in the living room with the Menorah. Alfred would help decorate with some of his own ornaments. Bruce let Jason go wild and buy some ornaments, but every year the three of them would make ornaments for the tree and sometimes Kate, Barbara, and even Dick would join in. Alfred’s favorite is the Union Jack Jason made for him.
With every family member that was added, more traditions came to the family.
DP
Sam hates when her parents force her to go to galas and other events in a similar fashion. The only thing that makes them bearable is when she is either allowed to bring a friend, or when the Wayne kids are there. She has made allies with them in order to survive these awful events.
The only event Sam Manson likes going to with her parents is The Wayne’s Hanukkah Party. It is always held a few days before Hanukkah begins, and is the best because unlike most of the gala’s it is a smaller, casual affair, for friends and family to actually hang out. She also gets to eat as many of Alfred’s Latkes as possible, and watch her grandmother flirt with most of the Waynes.
When Sam, Danny and Tucker were younger, either 7 or 8, the two boys modified a Beyblade launcher to fit dreidels and gave it to her as one of her gifts. (they were super into Beyblade and didn’t understand that Dreidel is very different., their hearts were in the right place.)It is one of Sam’s most cherished possessions she has received, because her friends really wanted to give her a gift she would like but include her faith. She busts it out every year and gets Danny and Tucker to play with her.

Hannukah Prompt List
Hi! I wanted to create a little prompt list for Hanukkah fics to offer a religious alternative to Christmas or non-religious prompts for this season.
This can be for any fandom, but I'm mostly Oscar Isaac/Pedro Pascal and Oscar has played several Jewish characters, so I wanted to promote this aspect.
This is open for everyone, regardless of Jewishness. If you'd like to contribute to the visibility of Jewishness in characters like Moon Knight or write a Jewish reader to make your Jewish readers feel seen, I encourage it!
If you have questions about anything, feel free to come into my DM's or my asks.
Some are religious, some are nonreligious but secularly Jewish.
***************
Ugly Hanukkah Sweaters
Lighting Hanukkah Candles
Making Latkes
Trying to find Hanukkah decorations amongst a slew of Christmas decorations. (This is hard lol)
Adam Sandler's Chanukkah song
Holiday Armidillo from Friends (RIP Matthew Perry)
Lemony Snickett's "The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming"
Trying to find seasonal things that aren't Christmas items, like snowflake decorations.
Telling the story of Hanukkah to a child
Getting jelly donuts
Seeing snow for the first time
Asking questions about Hanukkah or Jewish traditions.
Refusing to do a non-Jewish religious activity that makes someone uncomfortable.
Being snowed in and unable to attend services/family event
Please do not write Jewish characters doing Christian things if you aren't Jewish. Many Jews do things like attend Christmas services with family, sing Christmas songs, have a Christmas tree ETC, but those are very personal and individual choices. I'm not going to tell anyone what's wrong and what's right for any one person or family, but they are choices for Jew's to make, not non-Jews.
Also, please if you write Jewish blorbo and non jewish reader, please say so. If I'm reading a Hanukkah themed fic and Steven Grant is answering readers questions about Hanukah, it's going to take me out of the scene unless I know ahead of time the reader is non-jewish. Don't just assume your reader isn't jewish. Likewise, if your reader is Jewish, please label it Jewish!reader.
Will be adding more as I think of it, so feel free to comment or reblog with ideas!
If you use an idea, you totally don’t have to tag me but if you I’ll reblog it, wether it’s a fandom I read for not!

I’d love to hear how Lenny and Kitty’s Hanukkah visit went if you’re up for it!
(Follow up to this one ❤️)
Midge had always loved Hanukkah growing up. It had always been one of the more low stress excuses for her family to gather together. A time full of good food and laughter. Of candlelight and snow.
She'd certainly developed a newfound fondness for the snow since a certain fateful night in November.
Her hand went absently to her still yet unchanged abdomen as she watched the soft flurry falling outside her window onto the street below, eyeing every passing cab with fluttery anticipation.
“Are they here yet?” her father asked curiously.
She hadn't told him the full story. Only that Lenny and his daughter would be stopping in for a visit.
She'd break the news to her parents as to why they'd decided to spend the holiday together once the New Year rolled around…
She shook her head, dropping her hand away before he noticed. “Not yet. Soon though, I'd imagine. I'll let you know.”
Her father chuckled. “I imagine it will be fairly obvious,” he replied, patting her shoulder before returning to his book.
He didn't end up getting much quiet time before there was a knock at the door, a snow dusted Lenny standing on the other side with a bag of presents in one hand, and the tiny mitten clad hand belonging to his daughter in the other.
“Hi,” he greeted with a hesitant smile.
“Hi,” she smiled in return, welcoming them inside.
He looked good.
Tired still, but good.
She hadn't realized until then just how much she'd been looking forward to seeing him again.
Their calls had been nice over the last month or so, but nothing quite compared to seeing him face to face.
Lenny remembered himself, glancing down at the little girl by his side. “Uh, this is Kitty. Kit, this is Daddy's friend Midge I told you about.”
“It's nice to meet you,” Kitty said, gazing up at her shyly from under a little pink hat.
Dear lord she was adorable.
“It's very nice to meet you too,” Midge replied, bending down to her level. “I love your hat.”
Kitty's face lit up. “Daddy took me shopping before we left. He said you really like hats.”
Midge fought back a smirk as Lenny squirmed a bit. “It's true. I have a closet full to prove it too. Maybe later you could try on a few, if you like.”
Kitty's smile grew even brighter. “Really?”
“Sure. Why not? I love any excuse to play dressup.”
“Okay.” Kitty nodded excitedly.
“Okay,” Midge repeated with a laugh before schooling her expression. “Now Kitty, I have a very serious question for you…”
The little girl swallowed, listening intently.
“Do you like latkes?” Midge asked, a smile breaking slyly across her face.
Kitty relaxed, bobbing her head. “Uh-huh!”
“Would you like to make some? I thought that might be a fun thing we could all do together,” the comedienne offered, glancing over her shoulder briefly. “My kids are around here somewhere too.”
“Sure! But don't put Daddy in charge of frying,” Kitty warned.
Midge arched a brow at Lenny as she stood back up.
Lenny scratched the back of his neck sheepishly. “I uh…I tried making them one year. Ma was busy. They got a little burnt.”
She put a comforting hand absently on his arm, assuring Kitty “Happens to the best of us. But don't you worry. I'm a latke expert.”
Remembering herself, she pulled away, remarking brightly “You guys are probably famished! We should get started.” She turned to call down the hallway “Kids? Come say hi to Lenny and Kitty!”
Small footsteps soon thundered down the hall, bringing her son in to greet them.
“Goodness!” she laughed at the sudden entrance. “Lenny, Kitty, this is–”
“Hi I'm Ethan!” her son interrupted with a chipper grin.
“Hi,” Kitty greeted shyly, giving the boy a little wave.
“Do you like comic books? I've got the latest Wonder Woman issue if you want to read it,” he offered.
“Oh. Um, okay sure,” Kitty smiled.
Ethan led her back into the living room to show off his collection.
“And they're off,” Midge chuckled.
“Seems like a nice kid,” Lenny replied.
“He is. He's got a good heart.”
Midge looked down, finally taking full notice of the bag of gifts in his hand.
“Can I help you with that?” she offered.
“Oh, right!” Lenny handed it to her awkwardly, taking the opportunity to remove his coat. “Didn't want to show up empty handed. Just a few little things for the kids mostly.”
“I'm sure they'll love whatever you brought,” she assured him, smiling softly. “I'm…I'm glad you could make it.”
“Me too.” He hesitated for a moment before leaning in to kiss her cheek, hovering a little closer when she didn't pull away. “It's good to see you. You look good.”
“For a woman in my condition,” she quipped quietly. “You look good too.”
“Sure,” he laughed. “For a woman in my condition.”
She shook her head fondly, feeling a flush creep across her skin as they settled into their familiar banter.
Things had been good between them over the phone, keeping each other updated, enjoying each other's company from opposite coasts, but she couldn't help but wonder if it would feel different once they were in the same room again.
If the spark would still be there or if the reality that she was pregnant with his child would shatter the magic between them.
But standing here with him now…
Well in a way it was different, and yet exactly the same.
She still felt that same gravity pulling her closer to him.
She just didn't feel the need to fight it anymore.
And maybe it was just that they'd been talking more or that part of her was still an optimist but Lenny, for his part, seemed more open. Less guarded and more…well she couldn't quite say what. But it looked good on him.
It almost looked like hope.
Esther wandered in, carrying a book that was as large as her torso, hugging it to herself as she peered up at the adults. “Hi.”
“Hello,” Lenny greeted, pulling back to a more respectable distance at getting caught staring for probably a bit too long. “You must be Esther.”
“Yeah... I guess when I'm older I could change it if I want,” the little girl reasoned dryly.
Lenny fought back a laugh, blown back by the unexpected remark. “I'm Lenny. It's nice to meet you.”
Esther looked him over with eyes more astute than her years, before finally juggling her grasp on her book to shake his hand. “Nice to meet you too.”
Looking up at her mother, she commented “He sounds dif’went than I thought.”
“Oh?” Midge wondered, fighting a laugh.
Instead of offering an explanation the little girl just shrugged. “Are we gonna eat soon?”
“Soon. Go get your brother and Kitty and meet us in the kitchen.”
Turning back to Lenny when Esther had gone she ventured, “So. You ready to meet my parents again?”
Lenny chuckled, still getting over Esther’s unintended wit. “Third time's a charm?”
“Sure,” Midge nodded, leading him into the apartment before fully processing his statement. “Wait, what?”
Somehow they managed not to burn a single latke.
Even more impressive, they managed to eat all of them. Midge had prepped enough potatoes to feed an army.
And he should know. He'd had his fair share of mess hall duty back in the Navy.
Lenny smiled softly to himself as he watched the snow out the window later that evening, enjoying the quiet.
The kids had declared themselves best friends before the first latkes even hit the oil and practically demanded to have a sleepover as part of the night.
Abe and Rose had gone out to the theater shortly after dinner.
Leaving just him and Midge to hold down the fort for the evening.
Her parents had made excuses about having bought their tickets before they knew Lenny would be coming but he had his suspicions to the contrary.
Either way he was grateful for the chance at some alone time.
Looking out at the river now, the city lights sparkling across the icy surface, he couldn't help but think he hadn't given this view a proper appreciation last time he'd been here.
But then a lot of things had changed since he'd been here last.
He hadn't been sure how he would feel about being back in New York after having been ready to leave it all behind only a month before.
But now that he was back–now that he was with her, he realized, it felt like he was exactly where he was supposed to be.
He could admit it to himself now that seeing Midge at the airport that day had saved him from a very dark road.
And while he still had a number of obstacles yet to overcome, they felt less daunting than they had before.
Because she'd been there to help him start to turn things around.
Because she thought he was someone worth helping. Believed he wasn't a lost cause.
And if she could believe that even after everything that had happened between them… Well maybe he could believe it a little bit too.
Midge walked in to join him, rubbing the last bits of her hand cream in.
“I swear I feel like always wreak of potatoes for days after squeezing them out like that,” she chuckled, inspecting her hands self-consciously.
Lenny smirked. “Who knows, there might be a market for that. You could have your own perfume line someday.”
“Everyone's gotta have a retirement plan,” she quipped, taking a seat on the couch. “The kids certainly enjoyed their presents.”
Lenny nodded. “I don't think Kitty is going to let that Barbie you got her out of her sight.”
“She's a sweet girl,” Midge smiled. “I'm glad you could bring her.”
“Yeah. Yeah, me too.”
He gazed at her a moment in the lamplight.
Taking her in.
Gathering his courage.
“I um…I got you a little something too, you know,” he ventured, coming slowly to join her.
“Oh?”
She raised a curious brow, those expressive eyes of hers sparkling.
He'd missed those smiling eyes.
“Well, two somethings,” he clarified. “You get to pick which one you want.”
She blinked, confusion coloring her smile. “I don't get both?”
“That depends…”
“On what?” she wondered.
“On your answer.”
He pulled the ring box he'd been carrying from inside his jacket pocket, setting it down still closed on the coffee table in front of her.
“Oh…” she breathed.
“I've thought about it a lot, Miriam,” he informed her, sitting down but still keeping a respectable distance. “About you. Us… I'm a better man when you're in my life. You make me want to be better. You certainly deserve a hell of a lot better than me but…if you'll have me? Because I'd like to try to be worthy of you, pregnant or not. I've loved you for a very long time now and I would happily worship at your alter for the rest of my days. If you'll let me.”
Midge stared dumbstruck at the unexpected little box, her heart racing.
She'd hoped someday they might– but she told herself not to expect anything. He had so much on his plate already. She didn't want him to feel like she was another obligation. But she had hoped all the same...
At her silence, he added gently “You don't have to answer right away. Just know that I'll still be there for you–both of you–no matter what you decide.”
“Yes,” she breathed, her voice catching in her throat as tears pricked her eyes. “God, Lenny yes, Yes!”
A watery laugh escaped her as she dabbed her eyes, trying to save her makeup.
“Gah! You know you're not supposed to make the pregnant lady cry. Kind of rule number one.”
Lenny chuckled, his own eyes looking a little misty as he reached for her, wiping a tear with his thumb as he caressed her cheek. “Sorry sweetheart. I'll try to avoid it in the future.”
Midge smiled, kissing him tenderly. “That future sounds pretty nice.”
His arms encircled her as she recaptured his lips, pulling her closer until she was comfortably settled in his lap, the two of them getting lost in the embrace.
Being in his arms like this again, finding a love like his was something she never thought she'd get.
She'd convinced herself that no man could possibly love every part of her, could be willing and ready to accept her, to love her as both a comic and as a woman.
But Lenny did. She could always be her whole self with him, right from the start.
That night in that very blue room had been one of the best nights of her life.
She'd thought she'd lost her chance at ever having that again after Carnegie Hall.
So to have him here now, holding her like this, telling her he loved her, promising her a future for both them and their child… Well it felt nothing short of miraculous.
But then again it was a time for celebrating miracles.
And finding Lenny after she thought her life had fallen apart was nothing short of a miracle.
She smiled against his lips, pulling away to catch her breath and rest her forehead against his.
“So are you gonna open the box or do I have to do it myself?” she teased breathlessly.
He smirked, shifting to grab it without dumping her off his lap, opening it as he offered it to her. “I guessed at the size. We can get something else if–”
“It's perfect,” she insisted, taking it in.
The diamond was modest in size, more suited to her hand than a larger stone would have been, accented with two small sapphires on either side that caught the light just so.
She carefully pulled the ring from the box to slip it on her finger.
It was a perfect fit.
She swallowed, grinning as she held her hand up, admiring it in the light for him to see.
“Here's hoping my fingers don't swell too much,” she quipped.
He hugged her tighter, kissing her temple. “If they do, you can borrow mine,” he promised.
She hiccuped an undignified laugh, snuggling in closer, kissing his jaw. “How considerate.”
“Figured it's the least I can do.”
She turned to face him more fully. “I love you Lenny. I know it's a bit of an odd time to say that for the first time, but I do. I hope you know that.”
A smirk tugged at his lips. “I wasn't entirely certain but when you said you intended to have my love child I felt I had a little room to hope.”
She shook her head, pulling him in for another kiss.
“Still, it's nice to hear,” he murmured.
“Yes it is,” she agreed.
His hand cupped her cheek tenderly as he looked into her eyes, reminding himself this was real.
“I love you, Miriam Weissman.”
“I love you, Lenny Bruce.”
A grin he couldn't quite contain broke across his face as he hugged her close, tucking her head under his chin. “Yup. Very nice to hear.”
“Indeed,” Midge murmured, enjoying the cuddle.
After a moment, she added jokingly “Can I have my other present now?”
Lenny barked the laugh that had quickly become her favorite as he fumbled in his jacket for another present. “Here.”
She unwrapped the little rectangle he placed in her hands, revealing a pink notebook monogrammed with the letter M in the corner.
She was glad to see there was still room for another initial if she wanted to add another.
She pressed her lips together, trying to hold back a giggle.
“What?” he wondered.
She shook her head, turning to pull a very similarly shaped parcel from the drawer of the end table beside the couch, handing it to him.
He unwrapped it carefully, unveiling a notebook bound in blue.
Raising a brow he peeked inside the cover, finding her carefully practiced scrawl.
“For all your funny things to say. Dad jokes included. Love, Midge,” he read aloud.
“Depraved minds think alike?” she shrugged.
“Something like that,” he murmured affectionately. “Happy Hanukkah.”
“Happy Hanukkah.”
She cuddled into his side, watching the candlelight dance against the window pane, enjoying the quiet closeness they'd carved out for themselves.
“You know what?” she murmured.
“Hm?”
“I think we're starting to figure it out.”
He smiled, kissing the top of her hair, threading his fingers with hers over her stomach.
And for once, he actually felt good thinking about the future.
“Maybe we are.”

candles
Tumblr media
“Got these for you,” Joel said, holding out the battered box of candles. Tess hadn’t seen that uncertain look in his eyes before. No one else in Boston ever would.
“What for?”
“Y’know Jackie, she keeps track,” Joel replied. “Said it was next week, these’re enough candles for the whole thing—”
“You mean Hanukkah? You got me Hanukkah candles?”
Joel nodded. He’d do shit like this, something soft but in a hard way.
“The holder whatchamacallit—”
“Menorah,” Tess offered.
“Couldn’t get one. Tommy’s only good carvin’ wood. Seemed dangerous. Figured we could rig something up, for the window.”

Holiday Writeblr Tag Game!
Rules: write a blurb, big or small, about how your characters spend the winter holidays :) if your wip is a fantasy world, also feel free to include what the holidays are like in that realm! Also works with artist’s ocs
Detectives: holidays would be a tough time for Cal since she doesn’t really speak to her family anymore, and so she would go to Mary-Ella’s hometown with her to celebrate Christmas with her family! Which is a very big family. Her aunts would ask Cal if her and Mary-Ella are dating/dating yet (which they aren’t, they’re life-partners but platonically) but they would both overall love the holidays despite the “hassle” and such.
Red Ring Of Fate: this one is easy because the story starts in January and Chinese New Year is a big part of the story! They both celebrate that with freinds and family, and also spend Christmas with their families. December/January is probably the only time that Jingyi sees her family (specifically her parents) and it’s probably stressful but also somewhat great for her because despite it all she still loves them.
Horror: hadn’t thought about them since I don’t focus on home-life for most of the characters, but I know that Chandni and Oliver would celebrate Diwali with their families and possibly each other earlier on, and most of the characters celebrate Christmas! They would also do a friends-Christmas with secret Santa and definitely spend new years together :)

Merry Christmas/Hanukkah!! <3
prompt of brainy and nia spending the holidays at Nias parents house???
Happy Holidays! I whipped this one up in record time so forgive any mistakes. Hope you enjoy! x
Mornings had once been quite the monotonous feat to Brainy. A simple routine of waking, preparing for the day ahead and executing those plans exactly as intended. Some time before then, the morning hadn’t even been a time of day at all. It had existed outside of his perception, neither here nor there, as he had worked through the rise and fall of sunlight locked within his lab, or the artificial rays that had run in conjunction with the Legion ship’s automated Earth-clock.
That had changed in recent years. Now, Brainy had learned to indulge in all the gifts the morning had to offer. The most important of which he could find just by rolling onto his side, glimpsing one Nia Nal curled into her pillow just inches away from him. Sunlight held a far more pleasant aspect when it glowed atop her head as she slept soundly half buried beneath their comforter, not quite ready to face the world just yet.
When Brainy had awoken that morning, they weren’t in the familiarity of the bedroom they shared in National City. Instead, they were some miles away, spending the holiday period at Nia’s family home in Parthas. This was not the first time that Brainy had slept in Nia’s old bedroom, but sharing a space with his partner that was filled with so many memories, so much love, was a comfort he found he was never quite prepared for.
When Nia stirred at his side, a soft groan parting her lips, Brainy shuffled in close, burying his nose into her hair. “Good morning,” he murmured, his mouth lingering at her throat.
Nia smiled, lifting her head to meet him. “Morning to you, too,” she said, her voice still a little croaky. She rolled over so that she was facing him, snuggling into her favoured spot tucked away against his shoulder. Brainy grinned, relishing in the feel of her warm breath tickling his collar bone.
“How’d you sleep?” Nia asked into his pyjama shirt. She poked his chest, lifting her chin to fix him with a half serious look. “Did you sleep?”
Brainy had expected the question. Since his brush with death at the hands of Leviathan, Nia had taken to checking in with him every now and then on his sleeping patterns. He knew she felt regret at how soundly she could sleep on nights that a vision didn’t intrude on her dreams, but he had assured her time and time again that he was only glad she could find that peace so often now. Since she’d begun to master her ability, the chances of nightmares had tapered off to a handful every few months.
Brainy’s sleeping pattern, however, remained unruly at the best of times - old anxieties that he still struggled with from the removal of his inhibitors. It was true that he required less sleep than most species, but even he knew that he had made something of a habit of pushing at those limits to an unhealthy degree.
Today, though, he could be honest with her. “I did,” he admitted. “In fact, I slept for far longer than anticipated.”
Nia’s smile was infectious. She nuzzled into his throat, her lashes brushing against his skin. “The perks of sleeping in a Dreamer’s bed.”
“This room is indeed very cosy,” Brainy agreed. The natural light that bled in through the windows gave everything it touched a warm orange glow, reflecting against old nick knacks and stuffed animals, cherished items of Nia’s childhood that had been cared for with utmost love in her absence.
Brainy wound an arm around Nia’s back, drawing her in close. “I would have slept for longer I suspect, but I wanted to wake before your father.” He frowned thoughtfully. “He is quite the early bird normally, but factoring in the eggnog that was consumed last night—”
Nia chuckled. “Oh yeah, you’ve got an extra two hours, easy.”
Brainy smiled triumphantly, kissing Nia once on the cheek before sitting up. “In that case, I would like to propose that I make breakfast this morning!”
Nia sat up hastily at Brainy’s declaration. She took his arm, trailing down until her hand was wound firmly to his wrist. “Alright, so I’d like to propose we do that together.” She smiled at him honestly. “Dad’s – uh – had a taste of your cooking before, so he knows what to expect, but Maeve’s coming over this morning.”
“Ah,” Brainy said seriously, leaning in towards her. “Is her palate not as well-refined as your father’s?”
Nia snorted suddenly, covering her mouth in a blatant attempt to hide it. “You could say that.” She rolled her eyes, pecking him quickly on the lips. “It’s alright, we’ll figure it out together. Just, let me brush my teeth first.”
She whipped off the blanket in one swoop, bounding off the bed with revitalised energy. Just as she was about to skip out of the door, she paused, turning towards Brainy with a grin. “Oh, and Merry Christmas!”
Brainy grinned even brighter. “Merry Christmas,” he returned.
---
This wasn’t the first Christmas Nia had spent without her mom, but it was the first time she’d been back to Parthas for the holidays. It had been something Nia had both been looking forward to and totally melting down over in equal measure.
Brainy had kept her strong throughout the worst of her backpedalling, holding her firm when she’d tried to talk herself out of going this year, reminding her of all the stuff she’d expressed over and over again about how much she’d been looking forward to.
For starters, Parthas never did anything half-assed. Their holiday celebrations were some of the biggest and brightest, a community event that brought everyone together to celebrate with music, food and good company at the town square. Nia had never believed that holiday spirit could be superficial, not when she saw it so animatedly in the eyes of a town that shared so many unique cultures and holidays, both from Earth and off-world.
That part, Nia wasn’t dreading so much. She was even looking forward to visiting her mom’s grave again, laying out some flowers for her in all the colours she knew she loved. Ever since she’d paid the ultimate price to see her again, the connection with her mother didn’t feel so far out of reach. When she talked out loud to herself, she could almost imagine her mother listening in; there were even times when she’d catch the impression of someone familiar standing with her in the dreamscape, encouraging every step of her progress.
So, no, those things weren’t what was freaking her out so much. As she helped Brainy cook up a breakfast spread for her family, though, she knew exactly what it really was.
This was the first Christmas she’d be spending with Maeve since their mother had passed. Since the fight that had separated them. Since… everything that had come to light in between.
It was also the first time Maeve would be meeting Brainy in person, which felt so weird. Brainy was such a large part of her life and, up until recently, so was Maeve. Nia knew that her sister was trying in earnest to build her trust again, but it wasn’t going to be easy and whether Nia admitted to it or not, she could feel that strain whenever they were together.
She wanted things to go well when Maeve turned up, but at the same time she was painfully aware of how different it would feel for her to be here with them for the holidays. It wasn’t just Nia that Maeve had disappointed, and although she’d finally gone to visit their dad shortly after their team-up in the dream realm, things were still a little rocky on all fronts.
Again, Nia couldn’t have been more relieved for Brainy’s endless patience throughout her meltdowns. She was honestly surprised this hadn’t triggered any unwarranted anxieties of his own, but it seemed his adamance to support her had overridden any signs of that.
When the doorbell rang at the Nal household, Nia nearly dropped her spatula. She was just plating up the last of the pancakes, and Brainy had been digging in a drawer for cutlery, but they both paused to look up, catching each other’s eye.
Nia held her breath, holding her chin high. It was now or never, she supposed.
“Coming!” she called out.
---
“Nia, hi! How have you been?”
Maeve’s high-energy smile was dazzlingly hard to figure out, especially when she swept Nia into a hug that lingered a little awkwardly for everyone involved.
Nia was the first to draw away, trying to relax her jaw as she offered a smile of her own. “Hey, Maeve. I’ve been good—really good, actually.”
“I can see that.” Maeve winked at her conspiratorially, squeezing her hands. Nia wasn’t sure what she was talking about at first, that was until she felt Brainy join her at her side.
Maeve’s eyes darted to Brainy eagerly. “So, you’re the brainiac that Nia won’t shut up about.”
Nia felt a blush warm her cheeks.
Brainy smirked, bumping Nia’s shoulder. “I suppose I am exactly that.”
“Don’t let it go to your head,” Nia said easily, kissing his cheek.
“Aww, you guys are so cute,” Maeve gushed, but Nia could already see the game she was playing. She still hadn’t let go of her hands, after all.
Just as she expected, the second Maeve spotted the ring, she gasped. “Is that—?”
Nia bit the inside of her cheek to hide her smile. She and Brainy had been engaged for a couple of months now. They’d already announced it to their friends and family, in fact, the last time she and Brainy had been back to Parthas had been in the summer when they’d surprised her dad with their engagement. She still remembered the tears of joy in her dad’s eyes when he’d hugged her tight, shaking Brainy’s hand before pulling him into a hug of his own, formally welcoming him to the family he’d long-since been a part of.
Maeve had been a no-show at the engagement party Kara and Alex had put together for them, work obligations had predictably tied her down. Nia honestly hadn’t minded all that much. As much as she wanted to build a relationship with her sister again, she knew it was never going to feel the same as before.
Maeve squealed in delight as she turned over Nia’s hand, inspecting the ring from every angle. “Oh my god,” she said, scrutinising each detail. She paused suddenly, her eyes snapping to Brainy. “What, no rock?”
Brainy quirked a brow. “That ring is far superior to any Earth diamond, I can assure you.”
Nia grinned proudly, splaying out her fingers for Maeve to see. “It’s made of Nth metal,” she explained. “It gives you the ability to fly.”
Maeve visibly recoiled, although she collected herself quickly. She looked at Nia accusingly. “You just made that up!”
Nia’s grin broadened. “Nuh-uh,” she said. “And hey, maybe if you’re on your best behaviour, I’ll even show you how it works later.”
Maeve’s eyes narrowed. “Oh, you cannot dangle that over me!” But her tone was made in good jest, enough that even Brainy smiled along.
The rest of the morning went better than Nia had ever expected. Maeve relaxed to Brainy’s unaltered appearance almost immediately and seemed genuinely curious about his culture and species as a whole. She brightened tenfold when she realised that he was fluent in Naltorian and the three of them spent a good thirty minutes dipping in between languages as they grew to understand each other a little better.
Late to rise, when their dad finally came down the stairs, he was greeted with the sound of shared laughter and the smell of palatable pancakes drenched an inch to their life in maple syrup.
They ate together in the living room, sharing stories old and new, catching each other up with their lives and for the first time in forever, feeling like a family that wasn’t hollow at its core. Nia caught herself glancing up at the photo of her mom that their dad had displayed on the mantel, her smiling face watching down on them in the same way she’d imagined in her dreams.
She would’ve been happy to see them all like this, Nia knew. And maybe, someday soon, she might even catch a glimpse of her in the dream realm again, and maybe she’d be able to hear that from her lips for real.
They spent the majority of the morning lounging lazily in each other’s company, Nia curled into Brainy’s side as they shared their engagement story once more for Maeve’s benefit. It was the first time in a long time that Nia saw real elation in Maeve’s eyes. No resentment, no jealousy, she seemed to be truly happy for them. She didn’t even tense up when their superhero lives were mentioned. If anything, there was a sense of pride that had begun to radiate from her now, for the sister who had spared her a second chance, who she was determined to prove herself to with every waking breath.
A few drinks were shared before they headed off for the town’s festivities. Nia found herself walking hand-in-hand with Brainy, her free arm hooked through her sister’s, their dad walking amiably at their side, and she suddenly wondered why she’d ever been so scared of this day at all.
For today and – she hoped - for every day after, they were a family again.
That was the best gift she could have ever asked for.
