The Winifred Barnes-Sarah Rogers immigrant mother solidarity of just picking the last name of a random U.S. president to be the Anglicized middle name of their respective sons Ya’akov and Stiofán.
YES!!! I have long cherished the headcanon of bucky being named after the president bc his parents thought it was a good "american name" and i love the idea of sarah doing that as well. imagine Winifred and Sarah meeting for the first time at Ellis Island with their babies in their arms...

okay so a little bit of obscure speculation - my ex boyfriend is from Cork and was a BIG fan of captain america bc of the whole Irish thing. turns out in some versions of canon, Steve was born ON THE BOAT between Ireland and the US, which technically makes him an Irish citizen because being born in international waters makes you a citizen of the country your parents are from apparently???? anyway imagine how complicated that would make things if Steve was technically an Irish citizen but acting as captain america in the US army
Imagine Steve having to try and take a US citizenship test in order to get officially naturalised?? like imagine the poor examiner who has to try and make Captain America prove he's American enough?? (they'd probably have an aneurysm)
Or imagine the uproar if someone accused him of not upholding American values and he's just like 'yeah no shit sherlock I uphold Irish-American values" or if he was like 'hey can I get dual citizenship that sounds like it'd be neat' imagine the US gov shitting its pants after trying to threaten him if he acts up and he's just like 'fine if you need me I'll be drinking guinness in the other country I could be a supersoldier for.'
Seriously so much of the twinkly-eyed witty lil shit Steve in fanfic I'm just like... that's so Irish of him.

Public Service Announcement to Marvel Fans
Sarah Rogers is from Ireland, she is Irish. Her son, Steve Rogers, is Irish-American. In addition to speaking English, they'd likely natively speak Irish. They would not natively speak Gaelic.
While both Irish and Gaelic are in the Goidelic family of Celtic languages, they are two entirely different languages, spoken in two separate countries, both of which have their own separate histories and cultures.
Irish (also known as 'Gailege' in the Irish language, or less commonly and very confusingly 'Irish Gaelic' due to very poor anglicization*) is the language of Ireland and spoken by the Irish people.
Additionally, any translation resources you utilize for 'Gaelic' as a language will not give you the Irish language, because in English the word 'Gaelic', when referring to one specific language, refers only to the language of Scottland.
'Irish' is the conventional English term for the Irish language.
*Calling Irish 'Irish Gaelic' is very insulting to Irish speakers who fight to keep the language alive, as that name comes out of centuries of English ignorance and subjugation of all aspects of Irish identity and culture.

Eddie didn’t believe in New Year’s resolutions.
As far as he was concerned, new year, same him. You don’t like it? Choke.
He made no bones about telling people that, either. Every year when someone asked ‘So what’s your resolution?’ he was quick to launch into a rant about the pressures of society to improve and fit into being more ‘normal’. He’d sneer and whine until whoever was caught in the crosshairs was able to slink away.
Enter Steve Harrington.
Eddie was enamoured by Steve and all his superstitions. Steve never walked under a ladder, freaked out if he thought a mirror was broken, and even had a fake rabbit’s foot on his keys. Eddie caught himself counting a flock of magpies outside the trailer one day, trying to remember the dumb little rhyme Steve always rattled off when he waved to them.
One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy....
Eddie thought he must be really down bad for Steve if he was entertaining the idea of some random birds telling the future.
It was New Year’s Eve and Eddie was sitting in the Harrington living room with the rest of the party. He watched as Steve opened up some windows and placed lit a candle on the main windowsill. When he joined him at the window to ask about it, Eddie was surprised to learn that not only was it a superstition, but Steve was carrying on an old family tradition. Steve explained all about the origins of the candle, how it originally stood for hoping for a priest to visit to bless the house, and how it had morphed over time into being a welcoming light to bring the household into the new year.
“I open up the front and back door at midnight too, let the old year out and the new one in, you know?”
Eddie didn’t know, he had never had any superstitions, but he nodded anyway.
“Plus getting it all set up gives me time to think over my resolution,” said Steve, looking out the window.
Eddie swallowed hard. His mouth opened to spew his usual spiel about resolutions, but he practically bit his tongue to stop himself.
“I’m thinking about finding a new hobby this year,” Steve continued. “Maybe I should pick up a guitar, see if I can give you a run for your money,”
Steve’s soft smile made Eddie’s ears tingle.
“How about you, Eds?” asked Steve. “Any resolutions?”
Eddie’s eyes widened as he scrambled for a response. Fuck fuck fuck the one time he needed to think of one and he had nothing.
“Uh, actually, I uh, I was thinking about getting into teaching,” said Eddie, the gears in his head finally cranking up. “So I guess, you know, if you did want to learn to play, I uh, I could help,”
Eddie bit his lip and hoped Steve wouldn’t see right through him.
Steve put his hands in his pockets and gently bumped his shoe off Eddie’s.
“I’d like that,” he said.
And just like that, Eddie had his first ever new year’s resolution. He wasn’t even mad about it.

I’m writing a stobin platonic soulmates au so I thought I’d share some headcannons I came up with for things I believe Steve and Robin did pre season four to cement their friendship.
Steve cut Robins hair because she was going through a mental freak out about how she felt like an entirely different person now and she wanted to reflect that before school started, so she tried to do it herself cause shes broke and Steve who cuts his own did it for her.
Decided to watch all the horror movies in family video to see if their was any survival tips they could glean from watching and ended up comforting each other through triggering parts and laughing at other things together because a lot of this looks fake now in comparison.
Took the kids to the arcade and went in cause it was to cold to sit in the car and they hadn’t got their jobs at family video yet. They ended up getting into a really long and really competitive game of air hockey that gathered a crowd because they both were to competitive to give up. Robin used the angles strategy, Steve used jock reflexes. He won the first game, now they go after work some nights and have rematches. They are currently tied.
Speaking of family video, I feel like they did the applications together and Robin corrected Steve a lot on things I forgot to put down, or fixed his wording to sell himself more because he has things like: played basketball, and not “was captain and therefore have leadership skills cmon Steve.” They also broke into Steve’s dads office to write them and used a lot of his fancy paper.
Came up with a joint backstory for Ericas Dnd campaign where they are twins. Robin is really good at the roleplay and Steve gets really good roles. When Robins character died and she gave a speech both Dustin and Steve cried and since then he’s tried to convince her to run off to Hollywood to be an actress so he can be her trophy husband and Robin rolls her eyes at him.
Got one of those two ring joint floaties and sat in Steve’s pool to help him with his fear of his backyard. They started talking about their biggest fears together and it helps.
Robin gets Steve to come to hippy Christmas but he’s to scared to show up empty handed so they both try to make a bunch of Christmas cookies but they keep getting distracted and some of them are burnt. Robin hides it with icing. Her parents love Steve after that.
Steve comes out to Robin when they both go to a party together, get wasted and end up hungover and puking together in the bathroom. He said it was cause it brought back memories.
Robin doesn’t have a lot of money come Christmas so she goes thrifting and upgrades an old bomber to make Steve something like a letterman since she’s noticed he’s uncomfortable wearing his own. He cries because it’s the first time someone has ever made him a present before.
Steve accidentally overhears people talking about queer stuff and spur of the moment drives himself to Indy and finds the bookstore they were talking about and buys Robin any book the cashier recommends. She hides them in Steve’s house and reads them religiously.
They have a plan to go to a gay bar during Spring Break. They would have went before then but Robin didn’t have a fake ID and Steve had to get in contact with his old crowd to get her one.
They legit have a plan to get Married once Robin graduates, but she wants to come out to the kids first so there’s no misunderstandings, they both just want the security and the safety what a lavender marriage could do for them and have very detailed plans on how to arrange elaborate affairs while doing this. In contrast their wedding plan is either a courthouse or if Will gets to them Vegas.
Robin encourages Steve’s inner mean girl. She also is mean and they both have a very cutting commentary on half of the family video clientele. When Erica comes by she joins in. She is also holding them to the free ice cream bet so they both have a swear jar they both contribute to as an Erica ice cream fund. It was Robins idea.
Robin actually can drive and she does drive at night on backroads in Steve’s car when the kids aren’t there. Steve thinks it’s a cool little chilling out ritual, he’s literally horrified to hear she doesn’t have a license and that’s why she doesn’t drive in the day or with the kids.
Steve brings Robin to babysit the kids a lot and she complains for a bit until Mike says she’s like the cool dad and Steve’s the weird overbearing mom. Steve makes a joke about Karen that is so cutting Robin chokes on her drink but she doesn’t complain after that.
Half of the marching band, Kieth and the some of the kids (Dustin, Mike and Will) think they are legit dating, when they are asked they both make gross sounds and pretend to puke but five minutes later they will be sitting on top of each other.
They are banned from being on the same team during charades because the second Steve stood up and made a single gesture Robin got the answer. The kids thought it was a fluke at first then Robin stood up and Steve did the same damn thing. Dustin is convinced the Russians gave them mind powers.
They have a lot of sleepovers. At Steve’s, Robin sneaks in around the back and uses a key she copied and never told Steve about, he genuinely believes she’s breaking in and is impressed by it. Steve climbs in her window and hides under her bed when her parents come in.
So much more but that’s about the gist of it. They just love each other dearly and mean a lot to me!!! They are best friends forever I swear!!

Here's a thought:
kid Steve speaks better Gaelic than English. their pastor sometimes takes care of Steve when Sarah is working and he'd teach Steve English but, as one can imagine, the accent is not good. Steve is also partially deaf, he doesn't always control his volume well, so he speaks broken, heavily accented English, and that isn't a winning combo for friendships on top of his firecracker personality.
enters Bucky, the popular kid who somehow decides that Steve is his best friend in the world.
Bucky's grandparents immigrated from England, his dad is Romanian Jew. Bucky is not a very devoted Catholic, and the family still celebrates major Jewish holidays. they even hold a mini bar mitzvah for Bucky's 13 birthday.
the point is, Bucky has a fairly neutral accent that gets more Brooklyn by the day, he is also some kind of a polyglot. he speaks also Yiddish, he learns Italian from the neighbors, and French at school.
Bucky never makes fun of Steve's accent or gets frustrated when Steve can't quite get the pronunciation right. they read together, literally. Bucky would have one of his favorite novels, and he'd read the words out loud for Steve, when it's Steve's turn, he listens and helps him when Steve struggles.
Bucky is also the one to suggest they create a sign language of their own. just simple daily vocabulary like 'food', 'movies', 'home'. they add 'punk/jerk' and 'sorry' to their vocabulary after a short while.
and the thing is, losing Bucky is more than just missing a person in his life, it's that the most basic act of talking - not even about him - just talking, in his own native language, is a constant reminder of this loss. they don't have only their own sign language. in a way, English is their language too. losing Bucky is losing the languages, the tool of communication and connecting with other people and the world around him.

The Dogs, but they're actual dogs (+ Eddie and Joe)
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
🤍 Mr. White - Kangal
Tumblr media
Pretty but also scary boy. Looks like an older man. It's the face, it has a Keitel face. Maybe if the dog was smaller it could've been perfect.
🧡 Mr. Orange - Canaan
Tumblr media
I dunno?? It looks Freddy-ish. Skinny, orange and a resting worried face. Not really a cop dog but he's trying. Also thought about putting a Basenji.
🩷 Mr. Pink - German wirehaired pointer
Tumblr media
DOG WITH A GOATEE??? Struggled not to put a Chihuahua here. Looks a bit serious idfk. He looks like he's about to say that he's a professional.
💛 Mr. Blonde - Thai Ridgeback
Tumblr media
Edgy character - edgy dog. Ridiculously quiet but scary. Also same forehead. Could easily imagine this dog shooting the whole jewelry store down.
🤎 Mr. Brown - Bull terrier
Tumblr media
Silly fucking dog. Met one of these, it's like the most worry-free, braindead thing I saw. Will die if you don't pay enough attention to him. Also a Madonna fan.
💙 Mr. Blue - Scottish deerhound
Tumblr media
Grandpa dog, also very quiet. Hesitated before putting this. This dog is too pretty to be compared to Blue but like... which dog isn't?
👤 Nice Guy Eddie - Irish setter
Tumblr media
Fancy-ass fucking dog. Curly ginger. I can hear this dog yelling at the rest to calm down until "daddy" comes back. I don't know, it just looks lost.
👤 Joe Cabot - American pit bull terrier
Tumblr media
Edgy sonuvabitch. Didn't know what to put here, it just looks short and grumpy so why not (it's the non-existent neck). Kinda feel bad for the dog now.
Joseph Rogers & America:
Follow up to this ask about Steve and Bucky’s extended family from pre-war.
~
In CATFA, Steve said his dad was injured by mustard gas in WWI, but was in the 107th infantry, an American regiment, not an Irish one.
On the face of it, that makes it look like Joseph Rogers must have been in NYC from at least March 1917, possibly as late as Oct 1917 (since America only joined WWI in April 1917, but didn't deploy until 20 November).
However...
If Joseph was living in Ireland between 1914-1918 then he would’ve been drafted into a UK Regiment before he could emigrate to America (since Ireland was then still part of the UK). Even as a resident alien in America, if he hadn’t already declared intent to become a US citizen he would’ve been subject to the UK’s draft instead.
So even though America didn’t join the war until 1917, to have avoided the UK draft altogether Joseph probably has to have been in New York since at least 1914... unless, as said, he emigrated later but had already declared intent to become a US citizen.
(My first thought was that Sarah must have been with him, but not necessarily... She and Joseph could’ve married in Ireland, then he could have emigrated first, before her, to earn enough money to bring her along. Her alienation from an extended family network could’ve been because of this, or some other reason.)
Joseph and Sarah would’ve known from April 1917 that Joseph was going to be deployed with the US Army.
So if you believe the DOB for Steve being July 4 1918, then we know Joseph and Sarah must've been in the same place on Oct 7, 1917.
(Or a little later, if Steve was born premature, which is another possibility. Unless Steve’s real DOB is something else in 1918. But which months it could’ve been are severely limited by the dates of Joseph’s potential deployments.)
Which puts the date of Steve's ‘official’ conception right before Joseph could conceivably have first been deployed (Nov 1917).
That to me suggests a certain urgency.
If Sarah wasn’t already with Joseph in NYC by then, she definitely emigrated at the very latest in October 1917.
It’s a potentially quite bittersweet scenario of Sarah going by boat all the way to America to be with her husband, only for her husband to be almost immediately shipped off to Europe to fight in the war. 😕
My great-grandfather was born in Brooklyn in the 20s and I feel like this fandom needs to read an excerpt from his memoir:
"On Sunday, after doing half a day’s work, I’d go home, wash, and change my clothes and with a couple of my friends, we’d go to Coney Island. The West End or Seabeach line took us from Canal St., Manhattan, to Surf Ave., Coney Island. I’d try not to spend the entire dollar there. I always saved at least one nickel for the train and one nickel for my mother. I never failed to bring Mom a bag of colored popcorn. She loved it and I never disappointed her."
IS THIS NOT SO STEVE CODED 😭😭😭😭😭😭
There is something about Steve railing Bucky so good that he forgets how to use English and starts rambling and moaning in broken off Yiddish + Steve knowing enough Yiddish to understand what Bucky is saying and respond to it physically or verbally that is the hottest thing ever.
Bucky shouldn'tve been in there. Steve's room.
But the idiot had been avoiding him for three months now. And so he thought he'd pay a visit. Unfortunately, Steve was off doing God knows what so, he thought he'd laze around by the time, wait for his pal. It had been about an hour, when he'd heard something clatter from inside Steve's bedroom.
He quickly put down the coffee he'd helped himself to and gingerly approached the location of the sound. Steve's room smelt of sweet vanilla and peppermint. It looked cosy, soft white walls, a king sized bed with baby blue quilts and even softer looking pillows. The walk-in closet door was slightly ajar, with the sleeve of a plaid shirt poking out and a pair of running shoes just on the threshold.
Must've been in a rush this morning, Bucky thinks with a fond huff.
He walks over to the side of the bed closest to the window where the curtains are billowing like sails in the wind. Steve must've really been in a rush to leave his window open. He reaches out to shut the window when something shimmering on the floor catches his eye.
It's a small book. Leather-bound and tan with gold script embossed on the front. Bucky's mind provides a memory of Sarah Rogers walking with it everywhere she went. Of tiny Steve reading from it while he waited at the hospital for his mother after her evening shifts. If memory served him correctly- and these days it occasionally did- they'd buried the prayer book with Sarah when she died. Steve had told him to.
He must've really searched for this one then, Bucky realizes wistfully. His chest twinges at the thought of Steve waking up from the ice, lost and confused and trying his best to find anything and anyone to reconnect with his past again. Then he frowns. If Steve was so desperate to reconnect with his past, he wouldn't be avoiding Bucky right now. It's a bitter thought that seems too harsh in the soft and peaceful aura of Steve's room, so he quickly picks up the book. He eyes the open Bible on Steve's nightstand, a blue-beaded rosary with a celtic cross resting atop crisp pages.
Steve had never been as religious as his mother, but perhaps the future had changed his mind. Bucky knows it had changed him. Maybe Steve thought that going back to his Irish catholic roots again would somehow bring some closure. The thought doesn't comfort Bucky nearly as much as it should, because he knows Steve's been avoiding him, the one person who could probably share in his despair and loneliness and grant him some closure.
He sighs, moving to rest the prayer book back on the nightstand when he notices a word just barely concealed beneath the raised cover of the small prayer book.
Bucky. It says Bucky.
He frowns, reaching for the book again, every voice in his head screaming at him to leave it alone. That this was Steve's private stuff and he shouldn't be prying like some crazy obsessed person. But a part of him- the part that sort of resented Steve for avoiding him like the plague- won out. He opened the book.
Bucky's Prayer, it said, written in Steve's semi-neat scrawl.
The next line is a subheading that reads, "Prayer for Forgiveness."
It goes, "Jesus, forgive my sins. Forgive the sins that I can remember, and also the sins I have forgotten. Forgive the wrong actions I have committed, and the right actions I have omitted. Forgive the times I have been weak in the face of temptation, and those when I have been stubborn in the face of correction. Forgive the times I have been proud of my own achievements, and those when I have failed to boast of your works. Forgive the harsh judgements I have made of others, and the leniency I have shown to myself. Forgive the lies I have told to others, and the truths I have avoided. Forgive me the pain I have caused others, and the indulgence I have shown to myself. Jesus have pity on me, and make me whole."
Bucky knows it from the many times he'd go to church with Steve. Prayers for forgiveness were particularly popular during war-times as many women, children and men who weren't able to join in the war effort were encouraged to pray for their soldiers on the front lines. Steve used to tell him how he knew his mother would go to confessional, to pray for her husband and her ailing son. She often asked for forgiveness. As if it was her fault the way things had turned out.
He reads a line from the prayer again, one that Steve had underlined in blue ink, an anger building within his chest.
"Forgive me for the pain I have caused others, and the indulgence I have shown to myself."
Did Steve feel that way? And why the hell was it called Bucky's Prayer?
He turns the page and sees another subheading, "Intercession." He knew that as the part where the preacher would ask the congregation to say specific prayers for certain things and people they'd wished to pray for, or intercede. The next few lines make him sick.
"For Bucky,
I pray that his mind is healed in totality,
I pray he feels whole again,
I pray he feels loved again,
I pray he never feels alone again,
I pray he never has nightmares again,
And I pray he forgives me for my transgressions, for the pain I've caused him, though I don't deserve it. Amen."
