Valyrian Wedding Rituals & Its Parallels
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Among the people who came to inhabit Northumbria and the Lothians, as well as among other Germanic peoples, the nuptials were completed in two distinct phases. (…) The parties plighted their troth and the contract was sealed, like any other contract, by a hand-shake. This joining of hands was called handfæstung in Anglo-Saxon, and the same word is found in different forms in the German, Swedish and Danish languages. In each it means a pledge by the giving of the hand.” Handfasting' in Scotland - The Scottish Historical Review; Anton, A. E. (1958)
“In ancient Rome, a wedding was a sacred ritual involving many religious practices. (…) In a Roman wedding both sexes had to wear specific clothing. Men had to wear the toga virilis while the bride to wear a wreath, a veil, and a yellow hairnet.” Women's Costume and Feminine Civic Morality in Augustan Rome; Sebesta, Judith Lynn (1997)
“ When the terms of the ketubah were accepted a cup of wine was shared to seal the marriage covenant. (…) The bride and groom shared the same cup, symbolizing the shared life that would be theirs. (…) Wine in Judaism has always symbolized joy. (…) Wine also symbolized blood. The marriage covenant is a blood covenant in the eyes of God. Two lives become one in a lifelong commitment.” The Ancient Jewish Wedding; Lash, Jamie (2012)

I've seen a lot of troubling antisemitism in the Our Flag Means Death fandom lately regarding Taika Waititi. Please hear me out.
A lot of people want everyone to comment about the Israel/Palestine war. It's understandable. What Palestinian civilians are going through in Gaza is a nightmare that no one deserves. They are overwhelmingly paying the price for Hamas' actions- a group they have no control over and are also harmed by. Thousands have been killed.
After October 7th, Taika signed a letter asking for the Israeli hostages to be released. It did not endorse any specific actions taken by the Israeli government- it was simply in support of the hostages.
But you know what he was immediately accused of?
Supporting genocide. Even though what he signed was about Israeli civilians- including the elderly, disabled, and children- who were being held captive by Hamas.
On October 7th, Jews died in a single day in numbers that hadn't been since the Holocaust. Israel contains half the world's entire Jewish population. The majority of its population are descendants of Jews from middle eastern and north African countries who were forcibly kicked out in violent pogroms and had nowhere else to go. Many are descendants of Holocaust survivors as well.
I think most non-Jews would be astounded at how much the majority of the worldwide Jewish community is still mourning and reeling from October 7th. It triggered a lot of intergenerational trauma in many of us, yet I hear barely any non-Jews talk about it.
And yet you immediately accused Taika, a Jewish man, of supporting genocide just because he didn't support hostages being taken and random civilians being murdered. Do you really think he trusts people not to twist his words if he attempts to talk about Palestine too, when you turned a moment of legitimate pain for members of one of the persecuted groups he's apart of into accusing him of being a genocide-supporting monster?
We Jews not only have to deal with the memory of October 7th, but also with people conflating any support for the hostages with support for the Israeli government. When we say that criticism of Israel can at times get antisemitic, this is the kind of thing we're talking about.
Many of us are simultaneously mourning for Palestine and horrified that a right-wing fascist government that has little care for Palestinian lives has taken over Israel. Innocent lives taken shouldn't justify the killing of other innocent lives, and we are watching it happen, feeling powerless.
And it gets worse, because targeting Taika specifically because he's a person of multiple marginalized identities, when you don't attack white members of the crew nearly as much, is ironically racist.
Unintentional antisemitism and unintentional racism is still antisemitism and racism.
Take a deep breath and please reflect on how you have no idea what it's like to be Jewish right now, and how some of your own antisemitic criticism about his signature has likely contributed to his silence about Palestine. If no matter what he says his words and actions are twisted by so many of his "fans", he might think there's nothing he can say that will do any good.

Hello, bit of a follow up and the Magneto question. How do you think magneto feels about non mutant jews? Does he feel a kinship, or does he see them as other homo sapiens, still below the homo superior he now more more closely identifies with? Cause he really emphasizes the tragedy of the holocaust in his backstory but apart from kitty pryde, I can't actually think of any moment where he connected with a fellow jewish person? Thank you in advance for your answer and hope you are well.
That’s a great question!
So as I’ve said in the past, while Magneto thinks of himself as mutant first, he does consider himself culturally or ethnically Jewish, although he’s very firmly an atheist who does not give a shit about things like kosher.
If you’re looking for an example of Magneto interacting with non-mutant Jews, I would recommend you check out X-Men #199, the issue immediately preceding the “Trial of Magneto” recently adapted in the second episode of X-Men 97. In this issue, Magneto and Kitty visit the National Holocaust Memorial.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here, we see that Magneto keeps in touch with fellow survivors and regularly attends reunions, and is a respected member of the community. As in the show, Magneto is arrested by Val Cooper to stand trial for crimes against humanity, but rather than handing himself over to prove himself to the X-Men, he does so because Val Cooper’s quisling paramilitary force (there is a reason why the Zalagang refer to her as “the bitch Val Cooper,” and personally I think Mystique and especially Destiny have never adequately repented for their anti-mutant collaboration and this incident in particular) attacks the Holocaust Memorial, and Magneto is shaken by how his self-defense has endangered and frightened his old friends.

ok i get the desire to push back against annoying dominant christian interpretations of the torah/old testament. i really do. however i also wish that people would stop being like “actually, the jewish perspective on this is--” before listing off one (1) jewish perspective, usually either reform or humanistic, that also happens to be the most politically convenient and moral according to the standards of tumblr. like y’all if anyone tells you that there is only one jewish interpretation of something you should know that they are probably wrong, there’s at least one jew out there who would vehemently disagree with them, and also judaism is a complex living culture that you really should not put on a pedestal

on the video that went viral in the early days of the war of *Naama Levy, a 19 year old girl being shoved into the back of a truck with blood all over her, having clearly been raped and abused, i opened the comments expecting to find sympathy, and i was very wrong.
“why is nobody talking about the fact that she’s a zionist”
“she’s in the IDF”
hundreds like those.
guess what?
it doesn’t fucking matter if the jew being abused is zionist or anti zionist, or in the IDF or not. Hamas tortured and murdered antizionist peace activists too. They were targeted for being JEWS.
no jews deserve antisemitism. not a single one. i’m sorry to say, but if your defence of jews hinges entirely on whether they are zionist or not, or when you are willing to excuse a near pogrom in russia because “they were only looking for zionists” YOU ARE AN ANTISEMITE.
you don’t have to like zionism. but zionist jews are as deserving of life as antizionist jews. and if you claim to be against antisemitism you cannot turn around and condone violence whenever you feel like it. don’t think we don’t see it, because we do.
Not all Jews are zionists, that’s true, but all Jews are Jews, and not a single one of us deserves to die because of that.
(* Naama’s identity was not published until recently. she was a peace activist herself. may she come home alive and safe to her people)

Happy Purim!
Hey, do Jews remember when our holidays would trend on Tumblr, and that stupid meme wishing a happy "x" to whoever celebrated would pop up starting like the day before? And we were wondering what that would be like after October 7 since this site has found its way to extreme leftism and antisemitism at every corner.
Well, we have our answer. For Hanukkah, it seems like they were still keeping up their facade of supporting Jewish people, but now they've just given up. Because a "Happy Purim" is nowhere to be found.
And if they start tomorrow, then it just proves even more so that it's all for show because why would you make a post towards a specific group of people on the one day a week that they don't use electronics.

Hi! I love your fics! It's really good and accurate!!
I wanted to ask if you could write about Kyle with Christian s/o and he meets her parents but they don't approve their daughter dating him, and keeply forbids her from seeing him but disobeys?
(If your uncomfortable with this, feel free to ignore)
Kyle with a Christian s/o✝️⛪🕍✡️
Warnings: mentions of religion.
Gender: Female
Tumblr media
💚 Kyle Broflovski ✡️
Tumblr media
Even though you both were from different religions, it didn't stop you from loving each other.
Cartman says that Christian dating a Jew is a bad thing, but you both just ignored him...
But 2 people are taking it seriously and getting in the way of your relationship.
Your parents are Christian as well and they wanted you to date someone who was Christian.
They don't like Kyle every since they found out that he's jewish and they forbid you from seeing him ever again. But Kyle didn't take that lightly.
He knows that his mom can be strict as well. But he finds this ridiculous, what's wrong with a Christian dating a Jewish person?
Your parents were even more angry that Kyle refused to leave you alone so they "tried" to complain to his parents about his behavior.
You loved Kyle and he loved you back. You didn't understand why your parents wouldn't allow you to be with him all because your religions are different...
You didn't know what to do so you hugged Kyle and he reassured you that everything was going to be alright..he'll figure something out.
He wanted to have a serious talk with your parents hoping it would change their perspective on your relationship with him.
You were waiting for their response while debating if you should go live with Kyle instead since you rather be with him then be separated.
In the end, Kyle managed to convince your parents that your relationship isn't a bad thing and they apologize for gatekeeping you away from him.
If they didn't accept, you would have ran away to live with Kyle instead. You both love each other way too much to be separated all because of your religions <3💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

Listen I have no problem with Erik being visibly not white in fanfics and fanworks (well, no problem with his skin colour but more so what it implies; If your reasoning for headcanoning him as Black or Romani or Mizrahi or whatever else have something to do with oppression - I.E. antisemitism doesn’t exist enough in the modern world for your bullshit plot or you think you’re taking some power back from the oppressors - I want you to think for a second about your own inability to emphasise with Jewish people if they don’t look or act how you want them to. However, if you just don’t want Wanda and Pietro whitewashed regardless of who their other parent is in your AU or want Erik to look like you or just cause you think it’s fun - go ahead, I’m cheering you on) but it truly baffles me to see a non white Erik act like an Ashkenazi Jew from then on. That’s like dividing by zero in a calculator - stupid and ultimately pointless. Plus, you basically culturally whitewashed him. I’m all for non-white Erik but if you do that and lazy around about the differences in Romani Jewish and Mizrahi Jewish customs you might as well just stay home or draw him white because what was even the point?
