I'm more of a sci-fi lover than a fantasy lover (in case you couldn't tell) but Damsel (2024) was cool, I kept pointing at the screen and saying 'this is structured like a horror movie!'

It's got an innocent 'maiden' (read: teenage girl) as the primary victim, an unseen monster (they take care not to reveal the whole dragon until a while into the movie!), gore, chase sequences, false hope, building tension/dread into the reveal of the monster, and even jumpscares! And that whole sequence taking place in a CAVE with TIGHT SPACES??? UGH! Cave exploration/diving is freakin' terrifying to me, it was so fun to see it utilized this way. Maybe I haven't seen enough fantasy, but this made me realize I want more horror fantasy. So cool.

Funny that the moment the dragon's appearance is revealed in full (in the cavern scene against Elodie's dad), it moooostly goes back to feeling like a typical fantasy movie. Like I def saw that resolution coming from a mile away, but still overall really good stuff.

I love Tumblr because nothing matters here truly. There are no influencers. Having followers doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a site where people post their sporadic thoughts and rb pretty pictures. Anyone who thinks any of this matters is woefully missing the point

Amazed to see this review of Good Omens from four years ago that calls it exactly what it is: A gay cosmic rom-com. Such a refreshing and remarkable change of pace from "buddy movie" and "unlikely friendship" and other such euphemisms, which unfortunately seem to be just as (if not more) prevalent in the reviews today than in 2019. Hopefully Michael and David will get to do a full-on sex scene won't have to keep screaming about how in love Aziraphale and Crowley are by the time season 3 comes out...

Fleabag, a Feminist Icon

I love the show fleabag with all my heart, it is an amazing piece of television which makes me feel so many emotions. I spent a lot of time pondering how this piece of art is involved/impacts/advocates for feminism and want to share my thoughts.

⁍ The use of breaking the fourth wall was a very poignant technique. It served as a commentary on the agency and autonomy of the female voice. Fleabag's direct engagement with the audience, while offering a deeper insight on the characters feelings thought and emotions, challenges the typical passive role female characters are given within story telling as she is an obviously active participant in HER narrative. ⁍ The show tackles often taboo subjects such as sex, a topic women have been shamed for talking about or indulging in for decades. Fleabag's unapologetic approach of her own desires and refusal to succumb to societal norms go against the stereotypical representation of women in television. Her sexual autonomy is a crucial aspect of her character and is never demoralised or shamed for her choices and instead encouraged to navigate her journey through validation and empowerment. ⁍ Fleabag also delves into the intricacies of female relationships. It views them of less of "gossipy" and more of a strong powerful sisterhood which is unlike what is usually presented in television. The shows central focus is on Fleabags relationship with her sister, not a man. It beautifully acknowledges the ups and downs of woman and sisterhood and shows that women are deeper than what is at face value. ⁍ It offers a critical examination of societal expectations placed upon women by showing the brutality of the guilt, grief, and self-worth issues Fleabag has to deal with which many other women can relate to. The show dismantles the typical perfect, put-together woman ,whom we are far to familiar with through all sorts of media, and instead presents a protagonist who is flawed, messy and REAL. It is a refreshing departure of the one dimensional female characters we are typically forced to indulge in. ⁍ The character of Fleabag challenges traditional gender roles and expectations by rejecting the idea that her worth is defined by her relationships with men or how well she adheres to social norms. The show is about HER journey of SELF-discovery and SELF-empowerment. This enforces the fact that a woman's narrative does need to revolve around conforming to societal expectations.

The show is a ground-breaking representation of feminism in contemporary media. Through its innovative narrative, unapologetic exploration of female sexuality, and nuanced portrayal of female relationships, the show defies stereotypes and provides a platform for authentic, multifaceted female characters. I highly recommend anyone to watch the show as it was a breath of fresh air.

A few years ago I bought Tater Rounds Beauty’s Vampire Hunter D-inspired perfume and enjoyed it, so I have been keeping my eye on their Hellsing-inspired one for a long while now. I finally bought it, and it isn’t quite what I expected.

The website description of the scent is “deep red wine, dark oak wood, sweet plums, warm vanilla and a touch of spicy ginger.” I was not expecting it to be so sweet! The plummy fruit scent is definitely at the forefront when first applied, although it settled down after a little while. If I’m getting wine, it’s definitely fruity rather than tannin-heavy, and the vanilla is stronger than anticipated. I don’t see myself wearing this as much, although I actually think teenage me would have liked it better.

i just finished rewatching the film copycat, a film i used to adore and rewatch a lot in my early to mid teens, but irks me as an adult now that i finally have the ability to spot concealed allegory.

on its surface it’s a decent, well-made thriller, but beneath that surface its message is an insidious indictment of those supporting, and that supports consequences, of eschewing capital punishment.

helen, our ‘misguided’ would-be victim and longtime sufferer of paranoia, is the consequence of supporting the abolition of capital punishment. her agoraphobia is a direct result of her fear of a repeat attack, a fear reinforced by the ineffectual imprisonment of her would-be murderer, who has escaped confinement once before. helen is first introduced advocating the use of studying serial killers to prevent the fostering of others in their wake, but will all too soon be victim of that same belief. she survives the first attempt at her life, but instead of daryll’s imprisonment bringing the foresight and wherewithal to prevent future serial killers, and that safety promised with it, he becomes a leader/teacher for his disciples, one of whom is our copycat killer.

we then have monahan and goetz, monahan represents helen’s point of view, as demonstrated by her belief in incapacitating criminals rather than goetz’ strategy, which is barraging a criminal with bullets until they’re no longer a threat. we’re offered a counterpoint to the effectiveness of goetz’ strategy by monahan, who warns him against the dangers of accidentally murdering an innocent, but the film never challenges this potential. the only deaths caused by cops are those that are indisputably guilty.

these opposing points of view first come to the test in the form of goetz’ murder, where monahan’s technique of incapacitating criminals instead of killing them directly leads to goetz’ preventable death. it acts as an event to shake her belief, which will be tested again when she comes head to head with the copycat killer. this time, she uses the lesson learned from the death of her partner to ensure the death of the copycat, lest helen be killed like monahan’s partner before her.

the repetition of events serving as a correction to misguided beliefs isn't only portrayed through monahan's 'heroic journey', but through the films climax, and the cyclical nature of it. the copycat's death itself is the correction of the prior mistake made from sparing daryll of capital punishment. if the copycat represents all serial killers and their propensity of learning from those before them, then his belief that he is serving as a revision of where daryll failed, is the inverse of the film's message. which is that the copycat's death is the rectification of where the law had failed daryll.

this message is demonstrated most clearly by the open ending, where daryll continues leading more disciples down the same path that the copycat had taken, and failed, before them. if daryll had received the capital punishment that the copycat had ‘rightfully deserved’, then the law would have prevented his further nurturing of aspiring serial killers.

copycat never openly rebukes the abolition of capital punishment, it only ever disguises its beliefs in the consequences of abolishing it through choices made facing immediate threats. but it’s hard to ignore the parallels drawn between the two, and the implications it has on cops as infallible moral enforcers of the law.

Time for another one of my media review posts!

Murder Drones…. This is, with no exaggeration, one of the best shows I’ve seen, period. The writing is very self aware a fair portion of the time, and it doesn’t fall into the trap I see too many stories fall into of trying to avoid that fact, making it feel forced. Not here, this show is self aware and it leans into it hard (which in my opinion heightens the comedy aspect of the show.

The characters are so unbelievably loveable, even some of the background characters that feel like you should want to hate them. Uzi is so extremely edgy, and again, instead of pretending otherwise she leans into like there’s no tomorrow. N is like Silver the Hedgehog in my eyes: an absolute cinnamon roll. This dude has done horrible things, and has seen even worse, and yet he’s a seemingly unbreakable beacon of positivity, giving the people he cares about an anchor in a raging sea of bullshit. V went from murderous psychopath to the vibes of a protective older sister in only 6 episodes, and her character arc has been one of my favorite parts of the show. Plus she’s an absolute badass! If there’s one character I didn’t love the direction with was Doll, but hey, there’s still the season finale coming up.

The OST is honestly stunning! Like, there’s that gif of the dude playing a piano that catches fire? The whole symphony caught fire with this OST.

One thing that especially blew my mind was how fucking good the animation is. Like, I don’t think I’ve seen anything that can match Murder Drones in the animation department. The combo of the animation and soundtrack during the big battle in episode 7 was awe inspiring, nothing short of it! And there’s always layers upon layers going on visually, both artistically and lore wise, that makes rewatches even more fun, because you get to pick up on more and more little details here and there that you didn’t notice before.

I’m gonna be honest, I usually don’t do well with anything in the horror genre. But this show somehow took my discomfort around horror and turned it into thorough enjoyment! I think something I appreciate about it is it doesn’t lean too heavily into jump scares (there are a few, but that’s far from its main source of spooky), and almost all of the characters are robots, so there’s not even close to as much blood as there definitely could be. Overly bloody things and jump scare spam are the types of horror shows/movies/games that I handle the worst… I don’t handle them well at all.

I went in with some expectations (due to seeing A LOT of fanart over the past months) but didn’t really know what to expect. Those expectations were blown to smithereens. And for all the reasons I listed above, I have to rate Murder Drones a 10.7/10

Ranting about animation and gushing about trolls under the cut. Dont mind me I love sharing opinions nobody asked for on the internet

We all talk about the 'spiderverse artstyle/clones' blah blah I won't get into how much I hate that term. But while we're on the unique animation bandwagon. I think what Disney got so so wrong with Wish (haven't seen it yet, just speaking of the artstyle) is like, yeah, they were clearly going for 'storybook' in some aspects, but rather than make it more textured-- like, I would expect pastels and watercolours for something along those lines-- maybe even something reminiscent of the hella-lined-and-textured ink illustrations that appear in classic fairytale collections like Andrew Lang's Fairy Books-- they make everything feel flat, with a blend of 2d and 3d that... doesn't really work. They were so close to GETTING it, to making an artstyle that fit their story, but this is the only movie in the recent age where I feel 'spider-verse clone' COULD (not would, could) fit; they didn't quite get it. The only thing I really love from what I've seen is that some of the plants have like? A pop-up storybook effect?? That's enough about that. I do love the masterful compositions of Spider-verse, but in terms of actual art, TMNT takes the cake for me in the 'animation revolution' sphere. The grime and grit of New York sewerboys! The comic-book and hand-drawn feel! Beautiful, and a perfect artstyle for the turtles. Puss in Boots didn't capture my attention quite as much artstyle-wise (though the art was gorgeous, still), but it still does have that painted feel they were going for and that fits storybook characters (cough cough, Wish). I bring this all up because of my most recent 'unique animation' obsession, Trolls. Surprise! Another excellent example of an artstyle that upholds the overall feel of its story. I noticed this in the first movie, but I only really started to look closely after now seeing the sequels, so excuse me while I gush a bit. Immediate love for letting Poppy, a very girly character, have small eyes and a big nose rather than the typical babyface look of female disney protags. Though, Dreamworks was always better about this. I love the fuzz and crochet textures on everything. Even the little earrings on the pop trolls, something you might expect to have a metal or plastic texture, has fuzz on it! The water that floods Rhonda in the third movie is made up of those little plastic orb things (the name escapes me)! They all look like they're made out of felt, which is absolutely perfect for the scrapbooking/toy theme they've got going on. They're little creatures! And we get to see a whole bunch of different textures when we see the other species in the sequels. I want to stare at the textures all day. UGH SO GOOD

Would you ever do an analysis of Wildbow's prose, esp. in Worm? I'd say it's very workmanlike, not meant to wow you but to convey the scene as smoothly into your brain as possible. There are parts of Worm I've no recollection of reading because my conscious experience ignored the act of the reading in favour of seeing the scene, like Behemoth's arc. (Which is why I sometimes totally got lost on if they were on top of a building or in the street.)

I've written about my take on Wildbow's prose before: I think it's good. If it isn't good, I enjoy it, which from my point of view is similar. And I think it does a good job (Worm in particular here) of painting a cohesive blow-by-blow visual picture of the fight scenes.

I can picture Ballistic hammering Crawler into the side of a building while Genesis lobs rubble at him. I can picture Weld brawling with Mannequin in the middle of a sea of flames. My difficulty (and this is one that other people I've made read this in real life share) is that the sheer volume of prose means that I on occasion will start reflexively speed-reading, and this is the point at which I start to miss details. I had no mental model for Victoria's Airborne Flesh Coffin for quite a while. But it's very difficult for me to decide whether that's truly a flaw with the text, or just a way in which I personally am ill-suited for engaging with this specific text unless I manually correct. Because once I started manually correcting for this and forcing myself to actually carefully read line by line, I found that I enjoyed all of it and got a lot more out of it. The line between "ill-suited for me" and "bad" is nebulous.

But there is a level, too, on which he just got better, or settled into a voice, or got a better flow going; there are some comic-book-isms in the early chapters, some patterns of speech and description which later faded out. Stuff that probably wouldn't survive a co-ordinated tightening up. I put up with a lot the dialogue in early Worm. I actively enjoy the back-and-forth in conversations in the back-half; Weaver vs. Phir Se, or Taylor's quiet discussion with Legend in the field hospital in arc 29.

As always, I'm extending a mulligan for the circumstances under which the work was written. Whatever deficiencies crop up as a result of the batshit seat-of-your-pants method of writing, it still produced a finished product for there to be deficiencies in. Also, I got to read it for free; the ratio of resources-spent-to-enjoyment-derived makes me charitable.

#yeah! #derry girls #actually thought about this when i was studying today #the punk scene in ni is soo interesting to me #and how derry girls fits into art created about the troubles #because the vast majority of media about them has focused on the violence and political 'struggles'. and understandably so #but both derry girls and the undertones focused on teenager's lives . with the troubles on the periphery #teenage kicks is about the life of one teenager who fancies a girl basically #and derry girls is about a group of teenagers who struggle with ordinary things about being a teenager like school parents and crushes #and both the undertones in the 70s and derry girls today showed the rest of the uk/ireland (and further afield) that ni is more than just #violence and sectarianism. and that the people (esp teenagers) here are just like people and teenagers everywhere #which was a BIG deal in the 70s and honestly kind of a big deal now too when you think about english ignorance about ni lol #(one commentator on a guardian review of derry girls said that it hadnt occurred to him when he was growing up that catholics in ni were #just ordinary people just like him and his friends and family. which kinda shows the extent to which propaganda regarding ni functioned in #britain during the troubles - and still today in some ways) #it also feels significant that both derry girls and the undertones were created by working class catholics from derry but maintaining #a non sectarian aspect is also important - the point is that they both portrayed the realities of being a teenager which crossed religious #and political barriers. i could write a whole essay on this honestly #kinda moved on from the punk scene aspect hmmm in ep 3x05 of derry girls stiff little finger's 'alternative ulster' was played #which calls on the listener to 'grab it and change it - it's yours' to show that ordinary people - esp teenagers - have the power to create #a better society and a better life and a better ulster. and in 3x07 that's exactly what they did.

wow. alright. just got through loki season two last night. here are my thoughts

alright so first and foremost. the ending was bullshit.

something something pretty imagery pain and suffering godlike potential and he wants to be a good god. i just. gods there are so many other ways you could've done that in a way that didn't reaffirm that loki would suffer alone forever. that he would be burdened with a glorious purpose til the end of time. he doesn't deserve that. loki has been through enough and finally deserves something akin to peace and happiness.

don't get me wrong as a norse mythology nerd the imagery in this episode was nice. some concepts were lovely. the time travel tie together of a lot of stuff at the end i appreciated it. but loki didn't and doesn't deserve pain and suffering. one of the points of the show is that you are not tethered to fate and that you can try and make your own choices and destiny and is fighting back against the predetermined.

i will also be bitter that we as a fandom got queerbaited. again. don't come over to me crying but serena a romance subplot would've been rushed it wouldn't logically have worked, oh serena not everything has to have romance. well sure. i know. but i also call bullshit. if the writers can cram in a drawn out uncomfortable ai x romance scene then i'm pretty certain that they can make two characters who already have chemistry kiss. it could be like. a five second scene. a quick kiss on the cheek. anything to confirm that they. were actually together. it wouldn't have taken much considering the characters already have chemistry unlike some which they somehow managed to squeeze in there [coughing sylki cough coughing]

queerbaiting in the fact that we as a fandom were robbed of our potential loki genderfluid representation, along with barely given the Concept of him being bisexual before instantly forced into a seemingly straight relationship that resembled a selfcest fic. [the scene where loki said if he won't come back and was going to say something to mobius before time slipping was queerbaiting and you can fight me on that] loki using he/him in the mcu is why i am primarily using those pronouns for him. pronouns don't equal gender, he can still be genderfluid and use only he/him pronouns. or if his character were to come out and prefer different terms those pronouns would be used. either way i'd be thrilled because finally genderfluid rep

okay um flashes mythology nerd badge lets get into some imagery that i enjoyed despite not. like. enjoying the end of the finale.

yggdrasil. in the norse mythology is a giant tree that all of the nine realms exist upon. this giant tree is ruled over and protected. okay yeah most people who know anything can see that imagery in the end of the show. this matters even more but i'll get to that soon.

the imagery of the throne reminds me of odin's throne in norse mythology. it was a grand all seeing throne that no one else but the king of gods was allowed to touch [that didn't stop of lot of people though]. and while my memory of this is a bit fuzzy it does remind me a lot of the throne used.

it even more reminds me of the punishment that was used against loki in norse mythology where the god was chained to a rock with a snake dripping burning venom of their face

alright back to yggdrasil imagery. the branches of multiverse and the like are pretty obvious meanings. but what really stuck out to me was rather the fact that in the first captain america movie with the red skull, the tesseract was found in a carving of yggdrasil.

loki then proceeds to fight over and chase after this tesseract desperately as one of his motives. only to end up in the tva. and for fate to have destine for him to destroy the loom and basically restore yggdrasil.

do i like this ending ? no not one bit loki deserves so much better. do i think the imagery is pretty ? sure i do i appreciate the touches but i do think it could've just as been as meaningful without loki being sent to eternal suffering.

don't get me wrong the show to me was enjoyable. i was excited for it each week, but it was hard to watch due to a lot of wasted potential, unneeded moments, scenes that made no sense, and so forth. and also the fact that it feels like they don't seem to care about a lot of the characters ? maybe that's just me but yk

Tips on how to approach an author:

Know their material! DO NOT approach an author unless you've read at least one piece.

Know the Genre of their work! Figure out how you would best place their work before you message them.

Do not approach an author whose work you don't like or don't respect. You're putting bad fiction on the market and putting yourself out of work! How? Because you need a portfolio to show your potential clients, and if your promoting work that sucks nobody will want your services!

When you're ready to approach an author, give them respect! Have your credentials ready! What are credentials? A website with YOUR fuckin' picture on it. Oh no! I'm not an attractive person! Yeah, you're a book marketer not a model. No one cares what you look like! In fact, its better if your ass-ugly because then people might think your real and not a BOT! Where were we, oh yeah, Testimonials! I don't care if it's your mom and your pet cockatiel! Get somebody to vouch for you! Next, take the best quotes out of the books you promote and slap them on your website.

Always open with a piece you've read, what you liked about it (and when I say liked I mean know the theme if it's literary, how it made you feel if its romance, how you almost shit yourself if its horror or how wet it made you if its erotica. Kidding on that last one. Unless you're the type who can talk about sex in a sterile manner, if you can, you're probably a sociopath and that's ok. Sociopaths are usually really good at their jobs. Just don't scare your clients away.) and recite your favorite quote. I don't care if its cheesy. It just on messenger anyway!

And Lastly, and most Importantly, know your Trade! You need to be able to craft beautiful, poetic emails about what it is you provide that is so so very valuable. Remember, you're dealing with authors which means you're dealing with writers, which means that you're dealing with lovers, which means that you're dealing with dreamers. The good ones are a hard sell because they know what dreams look like! They write them every day!
